Dönnhoff
Despite being one of the smallest growing regions in Germany, the Nahe is one of the most compelling. Combining the heft of the Rheingau with the elegance and minerality inherent in the Mosel, the region offers something no other can boast: winemakers Helmut and Cornelius Dönnhoff. That’s a lot of faith we hoist on the shoulders of this family, but anyone who knows the wines knows that it is well deserved.
Dönnhoff is one of our favorite German producers, and one we stock by the pallet-load. They excel with both dry and off-dry wines, producing some of the highest rated and most enthusiastically praised Rieslings in nearly every vintage. Their privileged location in the Nahe, includes some of the finest and most geologically diverse vineyards in all of Germany. All this is backed by a father and son duo who will stop at nothing to produce the best wines in Germany.
Long-time favorites of our staff, even the entry-level wines are nothing to shrug at, offering unrivalled complexity in the under $25 range. From there, they produce dozens of options from their vineyards, from bone dry to nobly sweet, ethereal to luscious, and austere to hedonistic. The dry options top out at the GG, short for Grosses Gewächs, which is a powerful wine from one of Germany’s Grand Cru vineyards.
We’ve selected some of our favorites (cough cough try the Spätlese, cough cough) to highlight below for our three-day sale. But we have 56 different options in stock now, so there’s plenty to peruse on our webstore.

Medium to full-bodied, this is a round and elegant, finely fresh, persistently saline and structured Pinot Gris with a long and stimulating finish. 12% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 98 points “What an exquisite stone fruit nose this super-fine and filigree dry riesling has! Yes, it is also very concentrated, but this and the power are completely underplayed. The result is an almost weightless palate that hangs like a white cloud in the still air. Extraordinary purity and precision at the almost endless finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
Weingut Dönnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2023 6L Displayed Price: $1,099, that’s $1044.05 at 5% off and $989.10 at 10% off, 1 six-liter bottle in stock now – shipping not available / in-store pick up only
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 100 points “Incredibly refined and precise, yet with Grand Canyon-like depths and layers, this incredible dry riesling has a horizon-to-horizon spectrum of stone fruit, citrus and wild berry aromas, plus a touch of dusty hot soil as rain starts to fall on it. On the compact, medium-bodied palate, this side of the wine builds and builds to a giant crescendo in the almost endless finish. Drink or hold.”

Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 96-98 points “The 2023 Riesling Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Felsentürmchen Grosses Gewächs is picked in the fully south-facing site of porphyry and melaphyr. Cornelius Dönnhoff says this is the most challenging site to work, simply because the stones are so hard and unforgiving, retaining almost no water. Thus, a year like 2023 was brilliant for this site. It is always the first GG site to be harvested because the rock retains heat from the day. Tender reduction still casts a flinty spell on the nose. Lovely savor implies crushed citrus foliage merged into iron oxide on the nose. The palate is taut, citric, bright with immense linearity, moving with absolute ease and direction, with energy and punch, towards a zesty, cool finish, long, sustained, all with savor and saltiness. The 2023 is a total joy of clarity, direction and stony poise. This is so elegant, so slender, so powerful, and no, this is not a contradiction. (Bone-dry).”
Weingut Dönnhoff Hermannshohle Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $104.50, that’s $99.28 at 5% off and $94.05 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 100 points “Incredibly refined and precise, yet with Grand Canyon-like depths and layers, this incredible dry riesling has a horizon-to-horizon spectrum of stone fruit, citrus and wild berry aromas, plus a touch of dusty hot soil as rain starts to fall on it. On the compact, medium-bodied palate, this side of the wine builds and builds to a giant crescendo in the almost endless finish. Drink or hold.”
Weingut Dönnhoff Hollenpfad Im Muhlenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 14 bottles in stock now

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 97 points “What a dramatic wine this is, at once ripe and austere, super-stony and super-herbal with a touch of peppermint. Compact core in spite of the sleek and very focused body. Electric freshness at the vibrant finish although the acidity is anything but dominant. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
Dry Single-Vineyard Rieslings
Weingut Dönnhoff Tonschiefer Riesling Trocken 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 94 points “The vibrant aromas of white peaches and white blossoms are married to an intense slatey minerality in this sleek and precise dry Nahe riesling. Quite some structure, although it is barely medium-bodied. Wonderful stony intensity at the very long, bright finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”
This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!
Weingut Dönnhoff Kreuznacher Kahlenberg Riesling Trocken 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $41.90, that’s $39.81 at 5% off and $37.71 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 94 points “For a bone-dry riesling this has a stunning juiciness that is hard to resist. The spot-on balance of fruit, moderate alcohol and lively acidity makes you want to dance for joy! Wide spectrum of stone and citrus fruits. Then comes the very long and elegant finish that pulls you back for more. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
Weingut Dönnhoff Roxheimer Hollenpfad Riesling Trocken 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 20 bottles in stock now
Grapelive 94 points “The pristine and steely medium bodied palate shows of lime blossom, green apple, tart apricot, quince and tangerine, along with quinine, chamomile, almond, herb, flinty mineral spice, wet rock, lemon oil and saline. Zingy and youthfully energetic this Riesling also has the signature purity and elegance you’d expect of a Dönnhoff and it is complex enough to thrill the most jaded of Riesling lovers. There’s more to come with patience I believe and while I might be hard pressed not to enjoy this one right away, there should be extra rewards for those who wait, it should get another few years in bottle to fully express itself.”
Single-Vineyard Not Dry Wines
Weingut Dönnhoff Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Spätlese “R” 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $57.50, that’s $54.63 at 5% off and $51.75 at 10% off, 32 bottles in stock now

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 97 points “Here’s a breathtakingly vivid riesling Spatlese for the hot and sunny 2018 vintage, that’s just beginning to pick up some toasty complexity from bottle age, but also notes of dried flowers and herbs plus hints of licorice and candied citrus. It expands and expands with aeration. Staggering grapefruit and lime zest freshness at the very long smoky finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
Weingut Dönnhoff Kreuznacher Krotenpfuhl Riesling Kabinett 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $31.90, that’s $30.31 at 5% off and $28.71 at 10% off, 30 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 93 points “Brimming with tart-peach, ripe-gooseberry and lemon aromas, this is such a fresh and delightful Kabinett. Who could resist? Sleek and light in body with stunning freshness and purity that pulls you back for more. From the cool plateau of this site, which is within the town of Bad Kreuznach. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”

Wine Enthusiast 92 points “There is a whiff of pine that is followed by juicy nectarine and macerated apricot notes in this lush spätlese. It’s balanced and very expressive, with prominent acidity that flows authoritatively, but it is well merged with the rest of the elements. — Aleks Zecevic”
Weingut Dönnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spätlese 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 27 bottles in stock now

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 98 points “When worlds collide. The tension between the cool, dark side (think Darth Vader) and the enormous brightness of the stone fruit (think Luke Skywalker) makes this astonishing riesling Spatlese extremely compelling. The most beautiful pineapple and grapefruit aromas. Fabulous freshness at the stunningly straight and pure finish. Drink or hold.”
Weingut Dönnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spätlese 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 26 bottles in stock now

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 99 points “Welcome to the Bladerunner of Nahe riesling Spatlese. This is also extremely fine and complex, with a cornucopia of stone fruit, exotic fruit and spices. Radical stony minerality and racy acidity, yet with a feather-light mouthfeel on the barely medium-bodied palate. Then you wonder if the wine will ever leave you, so long is the almost endless farewell. Drink or hold”

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 98 points “Such an exotic nose with a slew of passion fruit, mangosteen and King Alfonso mango. Compact and concentrated, but the more important things are the coolness and gracefulness of this moderately sweet Auslese that turns in a dark, “earthy” direction at the powerful finish. Very limited production. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast for the half-bottle!
Weingut Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 8 bottles in stock now
Weingut Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese 2023 375ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 6 half-bottles in stock now
Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 96 points “The 2023 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Auslese was selected at the same time as the Spätlese. Dönnhoff says that for him, Auslese is merely a more concentrated Spätlese. He notes that passerillage also plays a part here. Slight smoke and Reine Claude plum compote on the nose continue straight to the palate, edged with beautiful lemon brightness. The 2023 shows gorgeous depth, deep lemon and gentle sweetness. A touch of herbal tisane adds a minty edge, exquisitely light, precise and sweet. This wine is a paradigm of lightness and elegance. (Sweet).”
This is the lowest listed price in the USA today for the 750ml!
Weingut Dönnhoff Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Auslese 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points “Pressed with whole bunches in a basket press for about five hours and vinified in a single halbstück (650 liter), the 2021 Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Auslese is one of the rare botrytis wines of the vintage, and it opens with a clear, precise and aromatic bouquet with candied pink grapefruit aromas. Lush and round on the palate, this is an intense, generous and salty, piquant and delicate yet also rich and sweet but light and lifted Auslese with great balance and elegance. A fabulous, delicate and fine, juicy and filigreed Auslese. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.”
