What does a life-long French Vigneron do in their retirement? Start a new winery of course! That’s exactly what Jacques Lardiere, the long-time winemaker for Louis Jadot did with his former employers, finding a new home in Carlton, Oregon. Without even needing to lean on Jadot’s clout, these wines are conquering American palettes and wowing major publications, including their 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir’s spot in Wine Spectator’s Top Ten Wines of 2023!
 
We snapped up as much of these wines as we could in 2023 and it still wasn’t enough to satisfy demand.

What region stops somms in their tracks? Austria. It’s an oddly shocking statement to point out that Austrian winemakers produce some of the greatest wines made anywhere in the world. They count among their ranks such luminaries as FX Pichler, Gobelsburg, and Nikolaihof, and such illustrious vineyards as Heiligenstein and im Weingebirge, the oldest named vineyard in the world.
 
Despite the love of diehard fans, the wines don’t always get the attention they deserve. If these wines came from France, those biodynamic, single-vineyard, Grand Cru, food-friendly, and ridiculously underpriced gems from thousand-year-old wineries, they would be three times as expensive. These are the source of the best value high end whites in the world.

Cavallotto: A Cru Among Crus 3-30-25

As we move west across the broader appellation of Barolo, there are 3 communes that become critical to experience and understand., and all of them are impacted by the transition from Helvetian soils to Tortonian.  In contrast to Helvetian soils, the Tortonian soil influence brings forward wines that are more perfumed, elegant, and approachable; the color leaning towards a ruby hue. The wines of this soil also arguably mature more quickly, but still have the same great staying power of the entire Barolo appellation.The Tortonian soil on this side of the overall appellation is characterized by the following properties:

  • Blue tinted (darker in color)
  • Compact calcerous marl soil mixed with sand
  • Fresher, more fertile
  • Rich in magnesium, manganese

Most strikingly impacted by these soils changes is Castiglione Falletto, a cru that is special in the sense that it balances Helvetian soil with influences of the more Western Tortonian soil that extends across the Central Valley of Barolo.
