Turley
 
Few wineries have the name recognition and body of work of Turley. Founded by Larry Turley (co-founder of such classic wineries as Frog’s Leap and Helen’s Brother) with a devotion to single vineyard, old-vine Zinfandel, Turley became one of California’s defining wineries in the 90’s.

Today, their fans are no less rabid. Turley is one of those producers who could make as much wine as they’d like and still have people thirsty for it. The gorgeous wines are hugely expressive and can be aged with ease. Though we never feel like there’s enough, the following just arrived and we are excited to share.

Burgundy is the most complicated wine region in the entire world and attempting to understand it is a task that knows no end. The main reason for this complexity is the overwhelming number of vineyard sites with entirely unique expressions. The formation of these plots can trace their history back to the early ecclesiastical land holdings of the Catholic Church, and subsequent discovery and parcelization by monks. As these vineyard sites gained renown and increased in value, wealthy French nobles purchased vast swathes of land on which to form prestigious domaines. The Northern Rhone appellation of Côte Rôtie (“roasted slope”) is home to some of the most elegant Syrahs produced in all of France. The area is aptly named for the steep, terraced hillsides overlooking the Rhone River that are bathed by the sun. It is the northern-most appellation in the Rhone, buttressed by the tiny Chateau-Grillet to its south-west and punctuated by the village of Vienne to the east.
 
Here, Syrah vines translate those long, sunny days into richly flavored and powerful reds tempered by a unique and elegant perfume. Look here for some of the most aromatic expressions of Syrah that the Old World offers.

Cavallotto is a top tier, old school producer of Barolo.  Their wines are impressively age-worthy yet somehow manage to stay at the edges of the mainstream Barolo drinker. That is something we’d like to change.  These are incredibly expressive wines and are very true to their vineyard terroirs.
 
Antoni Galloni describes them as “made in a style that offers the fruit density of contemporary Barolos with the structural underpinnings that are found in more traditionally made wines.”
