Maison Pol Roger is one of the last Great Houses of Champagne to remain family-owned.  Pol Roger founded the house after selling his first wine in 1849.  His father’s sudden illness thrust him into business at the age of 18.  He produced his wine in the Brut style, which was much preferred by consumers in Great Britain, where it quickly established a strong base.  His sons, Maurice and Georges, took over the business after his death in 1899.  They oversaw the expansion of the brand despite a massive cellar collapse that destroyed several buildings, Prohibition in the US, and the two World Wars.

Harper Voit

Drew Voit is the winemaker and owner of Harper Voit.  He draws from over 16 years of experience in the winemaking industry in Oregon’s Willamette Valley.  He has worked at Domaine Serene as an associate and a consulting winemaker and is the winemaker at Shea Wine Cellars.  He also does custom winemaking for small, super premium Willamette Valley wineries.  He began his formal winemaking studies at UC Davis in Berkeley, though his interest in wine began much earlier.  Andrew Bandy-Smith is the assistant winemaker, having met Drew at a Shea Wine Cellars event.

Through the Harper Voit label, Voit creates several single-vineyard blends and a Willamette Valley cuvee of specific sites.

Il Bruciato is a Bolgheri Blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Syrah; junior brother to the $100ish Guado al Tasso Estate bottling. Il Bruciato hails from the same Guado al Tasso estate, located approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) to the southwest of Florence near the medieval village of Bolgheri. The property, some 2500 acres (1000 hectares) stretches from the Tyrrhenian seacoast to the interior hills and includes, in addition to more than 750 acres of vineyards, terrain utilized for the cultivation of wheat, barley, oats, and olives and woods where a herd of Cinta Senese pigs, a prized local breed, graze in the wild.  … Read the rest
