Importer Note “Made exclusively of Pinot Noir harvested from several parcels, a mix of Oxfordian “caillottes” and Kimmeridgian “marne”. This Rosé is made using the direct press method with the whole berries entering the pressoir. The musts ferment in temperature-controlled cuves (85%) as well as a small percentage in older barrels (15%). The fermentation occurs over three weeks. The wines is bottled in the spring of the following year.”

It is made from 100% certified organic Cabernet Franc grapes planted on alluvial sand and gravel soils of the former Loire river bed. Raffault picks the fruit dedicated to the Rosé at the start of his harvest period, when it typically has attained one degree less in sugar than that of the Chinon Les Galuches, which is picked next…The color is light and bright cherry-red (…the color of the 2023 was more intense…), the exact shade Rodolphe aimed for. Aromas and flavors of red currants, raspberry and pomegranate, citrus and cherry fruit emanate from the glass. The finish is long, fresh and succulent.”

Rebecca Gibb MW-Vinous 93 points “Returning in 2018 after 2017 was wiped out by frosts, this is an intense, wild 2018 Buisson Renard, like an untamed head of curls. In clear evidence at this early stage, it has floral and boxwood characters and a nutty oak-derived influence. There’s even an intriguing note of peppermint on the sinewy, lengthy finish. In a mid-weight, linear style with a firm, phenolic finish that almost requires knife and fork. This needs more time in bottle to shed its austere frame, but if you’re not in a hurry…”

Becky Wasserman Importer Note “Size: Between 3.0-5.0 ha (7.41-12.35 ac) depending on the vintage. Variety: Chenin Blanc. Vine Age: Planted in 2017, 2019, and before depending on the vineyard. Terroir: From parcels in Brézé, Montsoreau and Saint-Cyr-En-Bourg, multiple soil types over chalky limestone bedrocks. Viticulture: Organic. Vinification: Pressed with whole clusters, fermented with a cultured yeast from the vineyards, 2-3-week fermentation and aging for 6-7 months in steel tanks, spontaneous and partial malolactic conversion (0-30%), SO2 added after malolactic conversion and before bottling (50-70 ppm total), filtered, stored in bottles for 3 months before release. They have maintained this designation to allow for flexibility in case future frost or climatic events affect their own grape production.”

VinopolNote: As one of the top wines from this estate, this 100% Sauvignon Blanc hails from one of Pabiot’s best parcels in Les Marnes. The vineyard soils are Kimmeridgian (calcareous clay and limestone), imparting a dense minerality to this generous, long-aging white. This wine was aged in large, oak barrels (demi-muids) with no added sulfites.

Importer Note “100% Melon de Bourgogne. The Clisson bottling comes from a 50-100-year-old section of vines in Pepière’s core vineyard near the winery in the cru of Clisson. Besides vine age, the distinguishing factor is the granite de Clisson, a very hard, compact form of granite. The very poor top soils are decomposed granite de Clisson with very little clay and a lot of quartz and mica over hard mother rock of granite de Clisson. The farming is certified-biodynamic. The hand-harvested bunches are direct-pressed and the juice settled naturally overnight. It is then fermented spontaneously with natural yeasts and aged on its lees for a minimum of 2 years in underground vats. The wine is bottled without fining or filtering.”

Rebecca Gibb MW-Vinous 97 points “Although it’s ungenerous on the nose, the 2022 Savennières Clos de la Hutte is tender and generous in the mouth, welcoming you in. There’s a cloud of gently handled fruit that embraces the palate, but it does so in an elegant and light-on-its-feet way. Texturally, it’s seamless and coats the mouth with fine texture. In terms of flavor, expect salty, briny notes and citrus tones alongside a touch of spice and nutty oak on the finish. This is a wine that seems to be able to take a deep, calming breath and become more complete.”

John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 95 points “The Saumur-Champigny “les Coudraies” is one of the estate’s single vineyard wines, made from a selection of the best parcels in this hillside vineyard. The wine is aged in mostly older casks for one year prior to bottling. The 2020 les Coudraies comes in at fourteen percent octane and offers up a simply gorgeous bouquet of red and black cherries, cigar wrapper, a touch of tree bark, a complex base of soil tones, juniper berry, a touch of cedar and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very elegant in profile, with a rock solid core of fruit, firm, buried tannins, excellent focus and grip and a long, complex and very, very promising finish. This is a great bottle of Saumur-Champigny in the making!”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 91 points “From three parcels with vines planted between 1955 and 1957 on silt and sand topsoil covering softer limestone bedrock. the 2019 Saumur Rouge is pure Cabernet Franc naturally fermented in tank for six months. The 2019 opens with a pure and refreshing as well as spicy/floral nose with dark fruit and fresh lemon aromas as well as stony notes and a nice reduction. Wonderfully untamed. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, fresh and silky-textured Saumur with a stimulating salty, round and fruity finish. At this young age, charm is not its greatest talent, but with bottle age, this will be a terrific Saumur rouge for many dishes and opportunities. I like this tight and traditional, straightforward style that might be a bit unpleasant at this early stage but will reward those with patience. 13.5% alcohol”

VOS Selections Importer Note “The Les Galuches vineyard is an ancient river bed of the Loire; the name being derived from the large presence of gravel. According to the records from the era, vines were already well established in this sector by the 1830s. The Cabernet Franc ripens very well in the domaine’s 10 hectare holding of this sand and gravel vineyard. Les Galuches is always among the first sites to be picked because the soil warms up quickly and drains very well. The wine rests for 6 months in 500 litre double-barriques. Always very aromatic, the Les Galuches bottling is noted for its bouquet of violets, followed by lush and supple dark berry/cherry fruit. Les Galuches vineyard has been organically farmed since 2016.”

Sweet (really sweet!) yet refined and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and generous yet piquant and firmly structured, greatly tensioned and salty 1ère Trie with pineapple flavors on the finely tannic and energetic, very sustainable finish. The 2020 has great aging potential, and I would never serve it too young. When will it really start to show its best? I don’t know, but you can’t go wrong to check the wine again after 10 years. Tasted as a final sample shortly before bottling in May 2021.”

In a few wine regions throughout the world, there exists one individual or family that defines the style of the region. When it comes to Valpolicella, the Dal Forno family does just that, crafting deeply concentrated expressions for over thirty years.
 
Established in 1983 by Romano Dal Forno, the estate vaulted to the heights of perfection in the Venato. The family employs traditional winemaking techniques, such as extended drying of the grapes before pressing, to craft their serious and seriously concentrated wines.
 
Vines hail from the foothills at around 1,000 feet above sea level. Here, the family’s 65 acres are planted to indigenous varieties such as Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella, grown and pruned according to ancient traditions.

After working with the original owner and founder, Russ (Raney), for several years, Erin Nuccio took over Evesham Wood in 2010. Under Erin’s stewardship, the already topnotch winery has continued to improve, showcasing the profound terroir of the land as the vines mature.
 
The estate vineyard, Le Puits Sec, is planted on an east facing slope with iron-rich soils overlooking the Willamette River. It is certified organic and, as a founding member of the Deep Roots Coalition, is dry farmed. The winery is certified organic, too.
 
The Evesham Wood wines tend toward elegance and expressive examples abound from the (all dry-farmed) vineyards. Erin’s aim is to continue in the style of minimal intervention at optimal (not over-) ripeness and reduced yields to allow vineyards to express themselves. Erin Nuccio is doing something harder than founding a revered wine label: keeping and improving the standards that made Evesham Wood famous.

The adjacent property is an abandoned limestone quarry which historically employed over 300 people, mining material to make portland cement used to rebuild San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. Exposed and unprotected from the elements, this wind-whipped site was planted in 1993 by the talented Napa Valley veteran grower Salvador Ramos. Soils at Watson Ranch are composed of calcareous clay over limestone. This soil type is extremely rare on the North Coast but shows itself in a narrow fin at the tail end of the Vaca Mountains in Southern Napa County. This fractured, well-drained calcareous soil, coupled with organic farming and cool windy conditions, imbue this parcel with great potential to produce world-class Chardonnay. The fruit we harvest each year from Watson is consistently textural and vibrant with underpinnings of ample natural acidity and salinity.”

Winery Note “The gnarled old Sauvignon Blanc vines at the Randle Hill Vineyard were planted in 1982 in the Yorkville Highlands of Mendocino County. This rugged and remote site is farmed organically on a steep hillside of eroding shale, situated at 1,100’ elevation, where it enjoys warm days and cool nights. We love the mineral driven Sauvignon Blancs of France’s Loire Valley and have long hoped we would find a site here in California that could grow Sauvignon Blanc that leaned in that direction. We knew that vine age, clone, elevation, soil, and farming all had to be right for us to achieve that expression and this vineyard met all the criteria.  The resulting wine exhibits mineral and saline flavors balanced with a hint of herbaceous and floral aromatics.”

Winery Note “We began making Trousseau in 2009, when we discovered the variety growing at the Luchsinger Vineyard, situated at 1,400’ elevation in the Big Valley AVA of Lake County. The vines here are planted in rocky volcanic alluvium on the remains of an ancient riverbed, and Trousseau thrives in the warm days and cool nights characteristic of this area.  The remainder of the blend came from a new addition to our vineyard sources, Las Cimas Vineyard. Situated at 800’ elevation in the western hills overlooking the Russian River Valley, the soils here are made up of fractured sandstone dotted with quartz and schist. The vines are thriving in the combination of ample sun and daily cooling breezes from the Russian River Valley below. We appreciate this unique variety for its ability to make a wine that is light in color but packed with flavor, and we feel it is an extremely versatile wine that will pair well with a wide variety of foods and occasions.”

Winery Note “We first began working with Gamay in 2011 as a collaborative effort with our friend Rajat Parr under the RPM label, until the final vintage for the RPM project in 2015. The original sources were Barsotti and Witters vineyards grown in the granitic soils of the Sierra Foothills, situated at around 3000’ elevation. In 2022 we were fortunate to begin working with Gamay from the Ascona Vineyard high up in the Santa Cruz Mountains at 2,500′ elevation. We employ the carbonic maceration technique where the uncrushed grapes are sealed up for several days, allowing the berries to begin fermentation from the inside out. This method is used by many of our favorite Beaujolais producers and adds a spicy fruitiness that infuses freshness and energy in the resulting wines.”

Winery Note “In the spring of 2012, our friends Tegan and Olivia Passalacqua purchased an incredible old vineyard east of Lodi in the tiny town of Victor, California named Kirschenmann. The site is located on an oxbow of the Mokelumne River, which over centuries has deposited loads of fine, sandy, granitic loam from erosion of the Sierra Nevada mountains to the East. The vineyard was planted in 1915 on its own roots and is primarily Zinfandel, with a little Carignane, Cinsault and Mondeuse Noir spread throughout the block. The old, twisted, dry-farmed vines are thriving under the watchful eye of Tegan, one of the foremost experts on old vines in California. Tegan also produces his own wine under the Sandlands label and is the current winemaker for Turley Vineyards in Napa. We are lucky to be offered one ton of this fruit per year allowing us to vinify just 2-3 barrels annually.”

The ranch was named after early Napa attorney, Augustus Watson, who owned the property in the early 1900s. The wines we have made from this planting are vibrantly aromatic and loaded with spicy, briary fruit, offering a unique expression of the variety in the Napa Valley.”

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “Bollinger’s 2015 Brut Grand Année is an intriguing wine in that is clearly reflects the decision to pick on the later side in order to avoid vegetal notes derived from the mismatch of alcoholic and phenolic ripeness. “Balance was hard to achieve in 2015,” Chef de Cave Denis Bunner notes. “At 10% in sugar, the fruit was simply not ripe. We had to wait to reach the optimal window of ripeness.” Bunner also opted to increase the Chardonnay, so the blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, as opposed to the more typical 70/30 blend, with more Verzenay than Aÿ in the Pinots. Dried citrus peel, sage, menthol, sage, tangerine peel and spice build with some coaxing. Light tropical overtones develop with aeration. There’s real density and textural richness here. This will be a fascinating vintage to follow. Stylistically, it is the complete opposite from the much more linear 2014 that precedes it. Dosage is 8 grams per liter. Disgorged: May 2023. Right now, it’s super primary (the blend will have some 40% to 45% wine from concrete), and they are slowly introducing larger oak foudres (3,000 liters) and lowering the impact of the oak in the wine. This has very good freshness, purity and elegance, reminiscent of past vintages like 2021 or 2016. It has terrific balance. There will be around 32,000 bottles that should be filled in November 2024.”

With inspiration from Burgundy and Alsace, the late Russ Raney founded the Evesham Wood winery in 1986. He planted Pinot Noir and aromatic white varieties. He was an inspiring figure in the Valley who influenced many folks in the industry, and is dearly missed.
 
After working with Russ for several years, Erin Nuccio took over as winemaker and owner in 2010 while simultaneously developing his own original label, Haden Fig. Under Erin’s stewardship, the already topnotch winery has continued to improve, showcasing the profound terroir of the land as the vines mature.
 
The estate vineyard, Le Puits Sec, is planted on an east facing slope with iron-rich soils overlooking the Willamette River. It is certified organic and, as a founding member of the Deep Roots Coalition, is dry farmed. The winery is certified organic, too.
 
While the Evesham Wood wines tend toward elegance and the Haden Fig wines towards more fruit-forward notes, both are expressive examples of their (all dry-farmed) vineyards. Erin’s aim is to continue in the style of minimal intervention at optimal (not over-) ripeness and reduced yields to allow vineyards to express themselves.
 
Erin Nuccio is doing something harder than founding a revered wine label: keeping and improving the standards that made Evesham Wood famous.

The Southern Rhone region of Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the king when it comes to power and impact. These wines are loaded to the hilt with aromatics, tannins, bombast, and terroir.
 
This is the home of GSM blends, the trio of grapes (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre) that comprise the majority of CDP wines. Grenache is the base with proportions of the other two varying widely between producers. Rustic herbal and rich spice notes frame the red and black fruit aromas typical to the wines.
 
You’ll find plenty of terroir here, especially among the top estates, where vines are grown in poor, stony soils that impart deep and dark mineral notes.
 
Don’t look for shy beauties here: the wines typically clock in at over 14% alcohol with lush tannins and fruit. Though Chateauneufs have an excellent track record for cellaring, they show magnificently throughout their long life.

Roberto Cavalli, international fashion icon, owns a top-end winery in Tuscany.  Named Tenuta degli Dei (Estate of the Gods), he and his son, the winemaker, aim to make the best possible Super Tuscan style wines out of their beautiful vineyard in the Tuscan hills. As you might expect from someone known for attention to detail and a strong sense of perfectionism, these are immaculately made wines. No expense is spared in their production. The resulting wines are bold, dense and textured.

This is a bold, flashy wine that’s an absolute treat—in other words, exactly what you’d expect from Cavalli.

Cavalli’s blend of (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Petit Verdot and 15% Cabernet Franc) stands out for its precision. The heaviness of some previous years thankfully belongs to the past. Bright acid lift a core of blue/purplish fruit, lavender, menthol, licorice and espresso. The 2020 might be the best vintage yet for this wine.”
