Chateauneuf-du-Pape
The Southern Rhone region of Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the king when it comes to power and impact. These wines are loaded to the hilt with aromatics, tannins, bombast, and terroir.
This is the home of GSM blends, the trio of grapes (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre) that comprise the majority of CDP wines. Grenache is the base with proportions of the other two varying widely between producers. Rustic herbal and rich spice notes frame the red and black fruit aromas typical to the wines.
You’ll find plenty of terroir here, especially among the top estates, where vines are grown in poor, stony soils that impart deep and dark mineral notes.
Don’t look for shy beauties here: the wines typically clock in at over 14% alcohol with lush tannins and fruit. Though Chateauneufs have an excellent track record for cellaring, they show magnificently throughout their long life.

Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $95, that’s $90.25 at 5% off and $85.50 at 10% off, 30 bottles in stock now
Decanter 96 points “A deep, quite herbal expression, with liquorice and crushed blueberries to the cassis fruit. Full-bodied, powerfully fruited, dense and deep. Really mouthcoating, intense fruit. The tannins are ripe, fine and plentiful, all saturated in blackberry juice on a long finish. Certainly one of the more successful Châteauneufs this year. Will age well. A Mourvèdre-led expression of Beaucastel – it contains more than usual, at least 35% and probably more. Grenache and Cinsault fermented in cement, Syrah and Mourvèdre fermented in foudre”

Domaine Bosquet des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape ‘Les 7 de Pignan’ 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 23 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 96 points “A new cuvée, there is a single foudre of the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Les 7 de Pignan, a pure Grenache named for the seven small vineyard parcels it emerges from, all on sandy soils in and around Pignan. It showcases the filigreed, floral side of Grenache on sand, with delicate notes of rose petals and resinous herbs, plus raspberries and strawberries. Full-bodied, it’s silky in texture and almost airy in feel, with a lingering, elegant finish.”
Domaine de la Solitude Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 8 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 94 points “Very attractive nose of raspberries, licorice and oranges with a touch of summer flowers. Round and silky on the full-bodied palate, the ample tannins are beautifully integrated, making the long, refined finish velvety. A cuvee of 65% greanche, 20% syrah, and 5% each of mourvedre, counoise and cinsault from biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”

Nicolas Greinacher-Vinous 90 points “Downright refined, the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape displays bright aromas of predominantly red fruits, black cherry, earth and cedar. Medium to full-bodied and spicy, the well-structured palate offers juicy fruit and concludes with a persistent finish. It checks in at 14.7% alcohol, one percent less than the 2020. (Drink between 2025-2036).”

Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Imperiale 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $59.50, that’s $56.53 at 5% off and $53.55 at 10% off, 16 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 97 points “The stunning 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale comes from old vines in two sandy parcels—one in Pied Long and one in la Crau. Exotic aromas of orange zest, Campari-like spice and exquisitely ripe cherries appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is silky and creamy in texture yet airy and vibrant, with a long, zesty finish. It’s a definite candidate for wine of the vintage, alongside its Mourvèdre-based stablemate, La Part des Anges.”

James Suckling 96-97 points “Such a deep and meaty nose with a slew of wild-herb, savory and subtle balsamic notes. Then comes the expansive and very concentrated palate, which reveals so many spicy nuances as it rolls over the palate, the stunning fine tannins pushing the finish out even further. A grenache-based blend from 60-year-old vines.”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 93-95 points “Tasted as a tank sample of the final blend, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape La Crau is a blend of approximately 60% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah and 5% other permitted varieties, with about 30% whole bunches used in the ferments. Marked by ripe cherries and hints of complex garrigue notes on the nose, it’s full-bodied but also really elegant, with fine-grained, silky tannins, ample concentration and a long, surprisingly crisp finish. Drink: 2022-2040.”

Wine Spectator 95 points “A nice throwback style, with a range of dried lavender and rosemary notes peeking out from a cedar-framed core of mulled cherry, blood orange and plum fruit. Features warm stone, licorice root and tobacco leaf accents that fill in through the energetic finish. A wine that’s very confident in its terroir. Best from 2024 through 2038. 2,495 cases imported. — JM”

Cavalli Tenuta Degli Dei Toscana IGT 2020 750ml $59 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “The 2020 Tenuta degli Dei is wonderfully poised and vibrant. Cavalli’s blend of (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Petit Verdot and 15% Cabernet Franc) stands out for its precision. The heaviness of some previous years thankfully belongs to the past. Bright acid lift a core of blue/purplish fruit, lavender, menthol, licorice and espresso. The 2020 might be the best vintage yet for this wine.”
