Two Value Stars of the Northern Rhone

Eric and Joel Durand

The Durand brothers are making it look easy.  It’s hard to find Northern Rhone wines that combine soul and polish—it seems as if most of the new wines we taste are either hyper glossy or very rustic.  To hit that sweet spot, where your wines speak very loudly of place but are elegant, drinkable and age-worthy—that’s special indeed.

Domaine Drouhin Oregon

Domaine Drouhin Oregon is one of the landmark names in Willamette Pinot.  They were the original “French import,” long before Meo-Camuzet, Jadot or Liger-Belair thought the region was worth investing in and they’ve been an important player ever since.  While they’re best known for their bottlings off of their original vineyard in the Dundee Hills, their “RoseRock” estate in the Eola-Hills has quietly been making some of the best wines in the DDO portfolio over the last few years.

Daniel Bouland

New Offer / New Sale

Daniel Bouland makes gutsy wines from old vines in the heart of Beaujolais premier appellations. You often hear that they’re traditionally made and, although that’s true, it doesn’t begin to describe what makes the wines unique. These are wines that recall what Beaujolais would have been like before industrial farming and certainly before industrial winemaking. They’re special, powerful and age-worthy.

From a winemaking perspective, the closest comparison to what Daniel Bouland is doing is probably Domaine Dujac. The cross-regional comparison probably violates some sort of law of wine-writing, but when you look at what Bouland does with his grapes, it makes sense.

Nanclares Deep Cuts

Certainly, Nanclares’ Albarinos are considered the stars of the show. The Soverribas is among the best Spanish white wines being made. But you can’t just play the singles and call it a day. The deep cuts are the reds from the Ribeira Sacra area of the Rias Miño. The little pockets of south facing slopes that run along the twisty north-south running river are ancient and planted predominantly with 100 year old Mencia vines along with other local varietals that flourish in the granitic and alluvial soils.

The southern exposure is a necessity as even in a warm vintage like 2015 the wines at full ripeness are only putting out a 13.5% abv.
