Russ Raney (which he later changed to Rainey), was a giant in the Oregon wine community.
 
After studying wine in Germany, he founded the Evesham Wood winery in 1986. He took his inspiration from Burgundy and Alsace, planting Pinot Noir and aromatic white varieties. He was an inspiring figure in the Valley who influenced many folks in the industry.
 
After working with Russ for several years, Erin Nuccio took over as winemaker and owner in 2010 while developing his own original label, Haden Fig. Under Erin’s stewardship, the already topnotch winery has continued to improve, showcasing the profound terroir of the land.
 
The estate vineyard, Le Puits Sec, is planted on an east facing slope with iron-rich soils overlooking the Willamette River. It is certified organic and, as a founding member of the Deep Roots Coalition, is dry farmed. The winery is certified organic, too.
 
While the Evesham Wood wines tend toward elegance and the Haden Fig wines towards more fruit-forward notes, both are expressive examples of their (all dry-farmed) vineyards. Erin’s aim is to continue in the style of minimal intervention at optimal (not over-) ripeness and reduced yields to allow vineyards to express themselves.

It tapers off with tense tannins, a firm acid spine and hints of tangerine, leaving the taster completely enamored. Readers should wait another year or two to indulge in this bottle. Winery Note “2023 was a curious vintage whose budbreak was 6 weeks late, flowering was within historic averages, and — amazingly! — harvest was right on time. We try to use this wine as our looking glass to figure out what is yet to come from the other HF and EW wines that are still in barrel. We sorted and direct pressed their Chardonnay and let the gross lees settle out overnight before moving the juice to neutral French barrels and third-use tonneau. This bottle strikes out with custard, mirabelle, candied quince, and lemon curd before settling on to the palate with yellow apple, peach and nectarine flesh, and sweet corn ice cream.”

The 2016 growing season was one of the best in recent memory in Montalcino, and if we look back in time, this vintage marks the year Biondi-Santi was sold to a French group. The prestigious 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva proves a mighty collector’s bottle that will undoubtedly gain in complexity and depth with careful bottle age. The wine offers wild nuances of forest berry and tart cherry, and there are herbal side notes as well as floral tones of dried violet and lilac. The tannins are soft, powdery and feel like they melt away on the palate.”
Jeb Dunnuck 98 points “The 2016 Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva is layered and unfolds in the glass with incense baking spice ripe red cherry and cedar. It has more concentration and length through the mid-palate and offers an impeccable balance of structure ripeness and tension. It is expressive on the nose but it is even more impactful at this stage with its intensity through the palate with nearly electric energy of wild raspberry rose petal tea leaf and orange zest. Today, at the top of the Chianti range, there is a new category: the Gran Selezione. Not only does it undergo longer aging that Chianti Classico Riserva, thirty months, and require a higher minimum percentage of Sangiovese, at 90%, but it also has more stringent quality control requirements. Gran Selezione must be crafted from estate-grown grapes from within the Chianti Classico zone, either a single-vineyard or a reserve selection. Additionally, it must pass a tasting panel performed by the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico against its peers. This example from Casa Emma is in its prime, showing an intensity and energy that will pair nicely with rich stews and hearty grilled offerings.

Roberto Cavalli, international fashion icon, owns a top-end winery in Tuscany.  Named Tenuta degli Dei (Estate of the Gods), he and his son, the winemaker, aim to make the best possible Super Tuscan style wines out of their beautiful vineyard in the Tuscan hills. As you might expect from someone known for attention to detail and a strong sense of perfectionism, these are immaculately made wines. No expense is spared in their production. The resulting wines are bold, dense and textured. This is a bold, flashy wine that’s an absolute treat—in other words, exactly what you’d expect from Cavalli.

Cavalli’s blend of (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Petit Verdot and 15% Cabernet Franc) stands out for its precision. The heaviness of some previous years thankfully belongs to the past. Bright acid lift a core of blue/purplish fruit, lavender, menthol, licorice and espresso. The 2020 might be the best vintage yet for this wine.”

Cordero di Montezemolo, in Barolo, was founded in 1340. We’ll let that sink in for a second. That’s a long time, by any measure, and when you have one family, in the same place, farming the same land, generation after generation, they are bound to become really good at it. That’s very true here. The Montezemolo wines have always been really wonderful, classic examples of Piedmontese wines in their respective categories.

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points “The 2018 Fontalloro is bright, floral and full of energy. In most vintages, Fontalloro is quite open, but the 2018 is especially nervy and taut. That won’t be an issue in time, of course, but readers should plan on being patient. Sangiovese is so expressive here. A whole range of floral and savory accents lingers on the close.”

What makes Nebbiolo such an incredible grape also seems to be the reason it is not more famous: its success is tied intimately to the land from which it comes. This captivating grape has been responsible for hundreds of thousands of highly praised wines for centuries.

Its robust structure and alcohol potential, coupled with a high acidity, seems at odds with its almost ethereal feel on the palate and its classic floral aroma. But only exploring it through the lens of Barolo and Barbaresco does a disservice to any true Italian wine aficionado. Explore outside the box with this exotic example from Bramaterra. It is, in the words of Italian wine expert Antonio Galloni, “drop-dead gorgeous.”

I tasted the 2016 from two core lots, separarely, and then in a hypothetical blend. It is a hugely promising wine.”

Produttori del Barbaresco is revered for producing classically-styled Barbaresco and Riservas of uncompromising quality and transparency. The vineyard holdings of Produttori have never been more impressive. Total incorporated growers now number 51, and the plots that the cooperative has to work with are the finest in the entire appellation.
 
Since 1967 the winery has often offered single-vineyard Riserva bottlings from the finest plots in excellent years and these continue to be the gems of the portfolio. Here at Vinopolis we have an incredibly deep inventory of Produttori’s Riservas, many of them aged to perfection and expressing a fineness of character that cannot be yet replicated by younger bottlings. The 2019s should feature heavily in your cellar. It’s a vintage deemed legendary for Piedmont and a benchmark for this old school producer. Check in on its development early with the bottling from Pora (after a healthy decant, of course). Pora is known as the most approachable, with supple tannins and delicious aromatics. Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points “The 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is a pretty tightly wound wine, certainly moreso than is typically the case for this Barbaresco, which is often much more engaging in the early going. Dried herbs, tobacco, cedar and earthiness lend notable savory nuance in this decidedly nervy, somber Pora. There’s good fruit intensity and plenty of character that makes me want to revisit this in a few months’ time.”
