Bordeaux
The most esteemed of French wine regions, Bordeaux is home to age-worthy reds, luscious and unexpected whites, and some of the most famous desserts wines in the world.
Dry white wines are either single-varietal expressions of Sauvignon Blanc or Semillon, or are blends of the two, often with small additions of other aromatic grapes. Top releases age well, while entry-level picks are a refreshing and more neutral alternative to Sancerre or New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs.
For reds, a major consideration is the appellation: those on the Right Bank tend to be Merlot-based with softer tannins and more approachable profile in their youth, but outstanding potential in the cellar. Appellations to know include Saint-Émilion (best known for its prestige and ageability) and Pomerol (the renege without a classification system that is nonetheless one of the most sought-after for its quality and exclusivity).
