Amazing with grilled tuna, and a clear candidate for the Summer Red Wine Hall of Fame. I drink it slightly chilled, but then any good red wine should be drunk at the temperature of a cool cellar, not room temperature.”
 

 

The vineyards have essentially been organic since Roman Times, tended by German monks for millennia before they were purchased by the Saah family in the 19^th century. The family took Nikolaihof to the next level and converted to Bio-dynamic farming in 1971, making them one of the longest practicing Bio-dynamic wineries in history.

In the village of Vertus at the southern base of the Cote des Blancs, the Larmandier family has crafted their champagnes since 1982. Since Guy Larmandier’s death, his wife Colette and their two children, Francois and Marie-Helene, have continued business with no alteration in production or quality. Harvests are still conducted manually, the wines are still aged a minimum of 36 months on the lees and all Champagnes for US export are disgorged on order. These memorable and pure Cru champagnes are a love letter to Guy’s vision and dreams.

The total absence of any sense of sweetness in this Brut Zéro allows the limestone to take center stage, and it presents in a more piercing and saline manner than in Larmandier’s Brut wines. Despite its relative rigorousness and austerity, however, this is by no means a difficult wine. Rather, it will appeal to those who relish the sort of palpable, intense mineral character Champagne is capable of when made in such a straightforward fashion. Aged 3 years sur lattes.”

Better Know A Wine Region

 

Millions of years ago, Oregon was on the Ocean’s floor. The same marine sediments that rose as tectonic shift created the Pacfic Rim and Cascade mountains now make up the majority of Yamhill-Carlton’s arable soil. These silty-loamy soils promote the excellent drainage that provides the strong concentration and moderated acidity that the grapes from this region are famous for.
 
Located in between Dundee Hills and Chehalem Mountain, the secret to this AVA’s terroir is not just the earth itself, but also the its proximity to the “Spencer Formation,” a U-shaped ridge that comes together with Chehalem’s mass to form a rain shadow over Yamhill and Carlton and promote excellent ripening potential.
 
The wines from this area are well-regarded for their structure and ageability and myriad spice and herbal notes.

Overall – despite the June ‘heat dome’ – the 2021 growing season in Oregon’s Willamette Valley was warm, and not hot, which may just be the template for a new classic vintage from the region. Slightly lower yields produced concentrated Pinot Noirs with fine tannins and Chardonnays of great freshness sure to become ageworthy collectables […] A five-star vintage for the Willamette Valley.

Fourth generation proprietor Pascal Agrapart runs this historic domaine in the village of Avize in the Côte des Blancs. The Minéral is one of the finer 2015s I have come across so far.”
 

Pascal established his Domaine in 2004, taking over operation from his father and mother and concentrating on a more natural and terroir driven approach to make the family business his own. Today he farms just under 9 hectares of vines including prime parcels in Vertus, Le Mont Aimé and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Natural farming and dedication to vineyard health is the driving force for Pascal; in fact, he rarely discusses fermentation—his passion is in the vineyards. The Domaine has been certified Organic since 2010.

And while we are not fully into the darker, colder weather that lends itself so well to the roasts and stews that beg for a rich Pinot Noir or Syrah, I’m dipping my toes into red wine season with wines like this Schiava. This wine is produced in the Italian Alps and typical for an Alpine red it’s lighter than Beaujolais, but heavier than a rosé. Room temp or slightly-chilled, this is the perfect accompaniment to these late summer days verging on the autumnal.”

Is it all about the dirt? Though the Dundee Hills became an official AVA in 2005, it has been a hotbed of activity for a long time– more specifically ever since molten Basalt flowed through the area 15 million years ago  slowly becoming huge chunks of a rusty hued, iron-rich soil known as “Jory.” This Jory makes up the iconic red hills of Dundee, but deep underneath it there lays a large bed of sedimentary soils—remnants of the great Missoula flood that carved the Columbia valley— that were pushed under the volcanic soil via tectonic shift. It is this layer cake of soils both volcanic and sedimentary that makes Dundee’s terroir unique.
 
These Hills are a foundational part of Oregon Wine’s history—this is after all where pioneers like David Lett and Dick Erath planted some of the Willamette Valley’s first vineyards. When you think of Dundee think of an invigorating mélange of savory spice notes on top of bright, pure cherry fruit flavors with high acidity and very balanced tannins.
 
These wines are among the most “classic” of Oregon Pinot Noirs.

Founded by Alberto Nanclares, a former economist, after falling in love with the Albarino vines planted on his property. He was later joined by his friend Silvia Prieto, a technician and enology consultant who became an equal partner in the operation. The essence of their approach is reverence for the vineyard, from organic farming to fermentation by native yeasts: “In the winery, we respect the grapes as much as possible, we don’t use any winemaking additions besides moderate amounts of SO2.” The duo have become a phenomenon in the Spanish wine world, producing Albarinos of a quality hitherto unseen in the region, capable of aging beautifully for years.

Sublime, racy with such depth of character, picks out all the best bits of the preceding wines. Nothing super ripe, nothing over tense, just the correct balance at a majestic scale.”
Vinous 96-98 points “The 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru, like the Bâtard-Montrachet, sees no new oak for the first time this vintage. It is strict and correct on the nose, and quite marine-driven, with oyster shells and sea spray infusing the malic fruit. The palate is beautifully composed and disarmingly harmonious, displaying a perfect line of acidity. There is real power and density on the finish, allied with wonderful freshness and tension. We recently had the pleasure of trying some of Jim Maresh’s wines again and let me tell you, he is doing things right in the Willamette.
 
First, the Pinot: hailing from the fifth oldest vineyard in Oregon, the 2018 Maresh Vineyard is taking on lovely savory notes of mushroom and tomato leaf underneath the luscious Cherry fruit overtones. The tannins are softening. This is already an amazing Pinot, but it will only get better from here.
 
As good as the reds are shaping up, Jimmy’s Tan Fruit Chardonnays are blowing them out of the water right now. Starting with fruit picked slightly under-ripe (or “al dente” as he calls it) the Oak Grove Chardonnay is showing more like Cru Chablis than a new world wine. Effortless, sumptuous, and lithe, this Chardonnay features a perfect harmony of fruit, acid, and oak. The finish goes on for ages.
 
These wines are a celebration of everything the Willamette Valley does well and are a new benchmark for the region.

Auslese… Beerenauslese… Trockenbeerenauslese. If your first impulse upon hearing these words is to offer a “Gesundheit,” then you may be missing out on some of the finest and yet overlooked wines ever made.
 
Generally speaking Auslese, Beerenauslese, and Trockenauslese which are legally required to be picked at high sugar concentrations, are sweet wines AND YET these classifications only guarantee the sugar content at picking.
 
Some producers, such as Vinopolis favorite Markus Molitor, use different colored wine capsules to denote the dryness levels in the finished product. So even if it’s an Auslese, a White Kapsule (WK) is going to be a dry riesling with no perceptible sweetness. Green Kapsules are reserved for slightly off-dry wines and his Gold Kapsules (GK) are for truly off-dry wines with additional residual sugar and the powerful fruit flavors that accompany.

Winemaking is in the Felix family’s blood. Though officially founded in 1690, current proprietor Hubert Felix muses that if his genealogy could traced back much further they would discover that the family has made wine there “since the Romans introduced the vine in Gaul.” Located in St Bris, a village that is located near Chablis and shares its Kimmeridgian soils but is best known as the only place in where Sauvignon Blanc is grown. Think of a Sauv Blanc with the electric minerality of a Chablis and you get the picture. This is a region and winery with a legacy all its own, separate from its famous neighbors.

Winery Note  This wine combines the fruit driven intensity of the California clones that make up around 60% of its volume with the more densely structured and earthenly-nuanced clones that are common to Oregon. This is richly colored, highly aromatic and abounding with darker/bluer sort of fruit notes and finishing with an excellent structural composition.

Exceptionally dry at first blush with meyer lemon peel, bergamot oil, and a hint of something tropical on the nose and palette followed by what can be called a lingering “salty sweetness” on the finish. I just love what volcanic sites like Burgberg do to Riesling over time. An assertive, but never austere Grand Cru from the Nahe region, the complexity here is just astounding. I wish I had the patience to age a few of these for a few more years.
