Decugnano dei Barbi: October 2023

Vinopolis Pick Estate:

Decugnano dei Barbi

Decugnano dei Barbi white wine bottlesThis historic Umbrian estate works with ancient marine soils dating back over three million years. As the first-in-the-US to carry a wide range of these sustainably produced wines in stock and by-the-bottle, we are offering five wines: two Super Tuscan-style blends and three mineral-driven whites.

Of course with a standalone email offer like this, you’d expect the wines to run in the triple digits (and given the quality in the glass, you’d certainly be justified!) Fortunately for you, these are far, far below that, with prices ranging in the teens and low twenties.

Were these Tuscan or even French, we’d expect them to go for double easily. Tasting them, you know that these might just be the best value in Italian wine you’ll find in our shop. (Pro tip: the wines are all bottled under Diam corks, which means there’s no risk of cork taint.)

Start with their refreshing “Casa Pica” bottling sourced from younger Vermentino vines (made famous in Sardinia yet tragically overlooked elsewhere in Italy), named for the century-old family farmhouse. Then look to their Orvieto Classico “Frammento,” which blends of fragrant indigenous and internationally famous grapes with more heft and complexity (recognized as a “Top Wine” by Slow Wine multiple years in a row). Finally for whites, we reach the apex: “Mare Antico” (ancient sea, a nod to the terroir). This Orvieto Classico Superiore includes Chardonnay in the blend for a truly thrilling taste-driven tour of the essence of the place. Decugnano dei Barbi red wines

Moving to the reds, we have two blends. The first, the “Battito,” is a Sangiovese-Cabernet-Merlot little number with character and class to spare. The bottle features an ancient Latin palindrome “In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni,” which they translate as “we wander in the night and are consumed by fire.” With such evocative inspiration, it’s no wonder this wine exudes hedonism and class. It’s a wine to spark passion and pleasure, or, as the winery puts it, the wine calls you to “indulge in an exciting journey through your deepest desires and allow yourself to be consumed by its fiery passion.”

The top red bottling, “A.D. 1212,” is named for the year in which clergy first made wine at what is now the estate. The hand on the label is in homage to their imprint on the estate. This is the only red vinified in French oak. It’s Syrah-based, with a splash of Montepulciano to add verve. It’s a sensuous wine that will satisfy now and for years to come.

Case-12 Decugnano dei Barbi ‘Casa Pica’ Bianco, Umbria IGT 2021 750ml $149 special (that’s only $12.42/bottle!)

Suzanne: Unlike the big and bold reds, the whites are restrained and mineral-driven. The Casa Pica is the most forward of the three with a deep lemon yellow color. It has notes of shucked oyster shells, lemon zest, vitamin box, and tarragon, notes which repeat on the palate. It’s moderately full in body with a refreshing crispness to the acidity. The savoriness and saline quality remind me of oysters with mignonette sauce. The moderate finish leaves an impression of lemon juice and green pears. It’s rich enough for chicken sauté or fried tofu dishes.
Winery note “The name “Pica” is the local name for the magpie in Orvieto. Just as the magpie is known for its curiosity, Casa Pica Vermentino is a fresh, savory, and mineral wine that captivates you with its sunny, maritime, and enveloping flavor.”

Decugnano dei Barbi ‘Frammento’ Orvieto Classico, Umbria 2021 750ml $16 special
Suzanne:
What a fascinating nose! It is decidedly mineral with layers of chalk, talc, and calcium. It’s as minerally as an antacid! Joking aside, there are lovely notes of pear juice, fresh bay, and mint. In the mouth, this is more reserved than the Casa Pica, but with noticeably more depth. The body is moderate, perhaps a touch lighter than the Casa Pica, but with more acidity. It’s exceedingly well balanced. The finish shows touches of lees, like a high quality Muscadet or a Côte des Blancs Champagne.
Winery note “Immerse yourself in the experience of tasting our Orvieto Classico, Frammento – an elegant and pleasantly versatile wine, perfect for accompanying your everyday moments. Its name evokes the fragments of seashells that fill our soils, witnesses of the sea that once covered them millions of years ago. But it also evokes the philosophical concept of terroir, and the fact that even in a sip of wine (a “fragment”), the totality of the soul of the place is still preserved.”

Decugnano dei Barbi ‘Mare Antico’ Orvieto Classico Superiore, Umbria 2021 750ml $21.90 special
Suzanne:
This pours a delicate straw color. The nose has floral aromas of peonies, geraniums, jasmine and mint. There’s a touch of vanilla fragrance like vanilla bean ice cream. On the palate, this is densely flavored with notes of pear tart, Chantilly cream, oyster shells, and white tea. There’s a briskness note here like freshly ground coffee. Overall, this gives an impression of a dry GG Riesling or Chablis. The finish has notes of cultured butter and Maldon sea salt. It’s long and lingering. An incredible value.
Winery Note “Mare Antico is the wine that best represents Decugnano dei Barbi. The name itself refers to that ancient sea on which our vineyards grow today. The grapes come from our oldest vineyards, whose roots lie in sandy and shell-rich soils to capture the soul of the place and transform it into a delicious drop of wine.”

Decugnano dei Barbi ‘Battito’, Umbria IGT 2020 750ml $17 special
Suzanne:
The wine is an inky ruby in the glass. Notes of black cherries and flamed orange peel emerge with air. There is an intriguing tar and engine grease note, underneath the fruit. Overall, its aromatics are moderate in intensity. On the palate, there are vibrant red and black raspberry notes alongside a touch of orange zest, stewed plum, and mulling spices. The body is moderately full with fine, sandy tannins. The Sangiovese really comes through. The finish shows amaro-like spice notes with a hint of green olives. The wine is juicy enough to pair with a heavily spiced Thai chicken curry, but serious enough for a braise or roasted mushroom dish, especially with tomatoes.
Winery note “Battito is a wine with an intense and broad aroma that explodes in the mouth with a full and generous taste, structured and full-bodied. It is the perfect companion for red meats and aged cheeses, enhancing its complexity and depth.”

Decugnano dei Barbi ‘A.D. 1212’, Umbria IGT 2019 750ml $24 special
Suzanne:
The wine is dark and inky in color with aromas of graphite, black tea, and purple lilacs. It’s fragrant and lush on the nose, just like the palate, which has juicy flavors of blackberries and black olives. There’s a little hint of toasted rye bread from the oak. The tannins are grippy and drying. The finish is full of black raspberries, olives and toast. Yum.

When one of the preeminent names in Burgundy, Étienne de Montille of Domaine de Montille, sought out land on the West Coast of America to craft Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a Burgundian sensibility, it was only natural that he focused on the Santa Rita Hills in Santa Barbara County. (It’s a region that seems to pull at French hearts, as it did with the late Philippe Cambie and his joint project with Adam Lee of Siduri, named Beau Marchais.)

And draw more Frenchmen, it did. Étienne shared the news with his friend Rodolphe Péters of Champagne’s top-class grower estate Pierre Peters, who quickly signed on and became the sparkling wine consultant for the project. Étienne partnered with Santa Barbara-area native and winegrower Justin Willett of Tyler Vineyards to manage the project on site.

The results? Exquisite and poised, these are wines that wowed even stodgy British palates with their complexity. To quote Beaune Imports, “the cool coastal climate and mineral based soils give [the project’s co-founders] confidence in light of global warming and it’s clear that Justin’s winemaking style would be at home in either Burgundy or Champagne.”

Newly Arrived from Racines:

What happens when a top grower Champagne house goes to California? Magic!
Racines Grand Reserve Sparkling Chardonnay, Sta Rita Hills NV 750ml $66 special, 36 bottles available
Decanter 96 points
“This is the best American sparkling wine I’ve ever tasted. The 2019 vintage base also includes 25% reserve wines from the 2017 and 2018 harvests. This Grand Reserve Chardonnay made from the cool Sta Rita Hills is crafted with a Champagne pedigree, and it shows. This Blanc de Blancs from across renowned Sta Rita Hills vineyards has undeniable Old World charm and sophistication. The aromatics boast ample toasted biscuit notes and great yeasty complexity from the 30 months on lees. The palate has a fantastic depth of fruit, spiced pear, cardamom, nutmeg and bruised apples. There is a subtlety of savoury biscuits and hints of almond cream. Elegant, yet bold and wildly delicious.”

Racines ‘Sta. Rita Hills Cuvée’ Chardonnay 2020 750ml $55 special, 36 bottles available
Decanter 93 points
“A wonderfully complex wine with ample texture. The Santa Rita Hills Cuvée is sourced from some of Santa Barbara’s top Chardonnay sites. The wine sees very little new oak and, as a result, shines forth with delicate brilliance—classically cool climate Chardonnay aromatics of soft white florals, crushed chalk and a touch of mint. The palate has verve and energy with savoury petrichor-driven minerality coming to the fore, followed on by bruised apples, a touch of cardamom and honey to finish adding depth and complexity along the way.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!
Racines Wenzlau Family Vineyard Chardonnay, Sta. Rita Hills 2020 750ml $89 special, 24 bottles available
Decanter 95 points
“Beguiling complexity, depth and beauty mark this outstanding Chardonnay from the Wenzlau Family Vineyard in the Sta Rita Hills. In a year when so many of California’s wine regions were devastated by smoke, this wine shows a fresh, airy poise—delicate and precise aromas of crushed chalk, petrichor, sweet white flower pollen and hints of seaspray. The palate is exquisite; a sophistication of flavors and textures collide. A savoury, briny minerality outlines apricot skin, early-season nectarine and subtle hints of bee pollen. The finish is fine, filigreed and fresh.”
This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!
Racines Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Chardonnay, Sta. Rita Hills 2020 750ml $99 special, 6 bottles available
Decanter 95 points
“The historic Chardonnay parcel of original and own-rooted plantings dates back to 1971. These Chardonnay vines are the oldest vines in the Santa Rita Hills Racy, yet richly textured and effusively aromatic, this wine shows a serious old vine complexity and the coastal influence of Santa Barbara county terroir. Aromatics of bruised apples and petrichor are punctuated by notes of sea foam and smoke. The palate is energized by savoury briny citrus and crushed chalk. Electric acidity amplifies the wines mineral character with hints of smoke and crushed limestone with hints of grilled lime and green mango. A revelatory California Chardonnay.”

Racines ‘Sta. Rita Hills Cuvée’ Pinot Noir 2020 750ml $54.50 special, 24 bottles available
Vinous 93 points
“The 2020 Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills Cuvée is a terrific introduction to the range. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, spice, rose petal and a touch of whole cluster savoriness are all beautifully delineated. This is such a gorgeous and expressive Pinot.”

Racines Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills 2020 750ml $115 special, 12 bottles available
Decanter 94 points
“Sanford & Benedict vineyard is the Santa Rita Hills’ highest calling for Pinot Noir grapes. Made from three parcels within the site, including some own-rooted vines from 1971. This Pinot Noir is indelibly marked by pungent and stirring floral aromatics accented by frankincense, leather and smoke. The palate shows a generosity of fruit, but a significant amount of the whole cluster gives this wine savoury edges. Notes of crushed basalt, thyme and wild sumac envelop a core of blue and red fruits. Clove, five-star anise and a hint of cassia bark accompany this wine through its finish, measured in 5-minute intervals.”
This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!
Racines La Rinconada Vineyard Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills 2018 750ml $99 special, 6 bottles available
Decanter 96 points
“This Santa Rita Hills-focused label between Justin Willett and Étienne de Montille takes a ‘low and slow’ approach to the winemaking process, contrasting the relatively delicate, high-toned style of the Tyler wines. Pinot Noir at La Rinconada Vineyard tends to exude a burly and structured style, as is the case with the 2018 Racines bottling. Sourced from a plot just feet away from that which supplies Tyler, a savoury and soft nose introduces a weighty, wide and tannic showing that is built to last. Drinking Window 2022 – 2045.”
This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
Racines ‘Sainte Rose’ Pinot Noir, Sta Rita Hills 2020 750ml $79 special, 12 bottles available
Decanter 94 points
“From organic vineyards along the Santa Rosa Road corridor, this Pinot Noir from Racines is a straightforward cooler site Pinot Noir from Santa Rita Hills. Aromas of strawberry fruit leather give way to notes of turned earth and crushed black basalt. The palate is savoury, with underlying dried fruit flavors. Montmorency cherries, garden soil and clove, evolve into notes of savoury herbs and streaks of graphite minerality.”

Champagne

Larmandier-Bernier Les Chemins d’Avize Grand Cru Extra Brut, Champagne 2013 750ml $149 special, only 12 bottles available
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 96 points
“Revisited from the October 2019 disgorgement, Larmandier-Bernier’s 2013 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Les Chemins d’Avize continues to show brilliantly, offering up complex aromas of argan oil, fresh apricot and crisp yellow orchard fruit, complemented by hints of fresh walnuts and almond paste. Full-bodied, deep and vinous, it’s layered and elegantly fleshy, with a concentrated core of ripe fruit, racy acids and a long, mineral finish. As I wrote last year, Pierre Larmandier invariably excels in cool, late-growing seasons, so the 2013 vintage was perfectly adapted to his talents.”
This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!
Pommery Grand Cru Brut Millesime, Champagne 2008 750ml $79 special, 18 bottles available
Decanter World Wine Awards 94 points
“Melon, peach and toast bouquet. Superbly fresh palate with an elegant texture, mouthwatering acidity and confit lemon, dark chocolate and bitter orange flavours.”

Taittinger Brut Millesime, Champagne 2015 750ml $99 special, 20 bottles available
Wine Spectator 93 points
“Vibrant and harmonious, with a pleasing range of ripe pear and nectarine, toast point and salted almond, candied lemon peel and spun honey riding the finely detailed bead. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Drink now through 2030. 500 cases imported.”
Jeb Dunnuck 93 points “The 2015 Champagne Millésime Brut is equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The nose is fragrant with ripe peach and rose petal, and it has a rich texture, with a more viscous feel, and note of yellow flowers and Anjou pear. It speaks to the ripeness of the vintage, but it is long on the palate and has a light phenolic finish. I think this is ready to drink now.”

Bordeaux
Chateau Soubian, Pessac-Leognan 2019 750ml $28 special, 36 bottles available
Importer Notes
“This hidden gem of a property lies just to the west of the village of Léognan on a beautiful hillock of gravel, and noted historically for its unique setting and propensity for exceptional wines. The 2019 Soubian offers a quintessential expression of the velvety, ripe and fresh 2019 vintage, with its own individual expression of forward red and black fruits, with spicy, slightly-peppery aromas.”
This is the only listing in the USA today!
Chateau Beychevelle, Saint-Julien 2015 750ml $149 special, 11 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The 2015 Beychevelle comes across as much more powerful and plush in bottle than it did as a barrel sample. The black cherry, smoke, leather, tobacco, spice and incense notes are all endowed with notable textural depth. Voluptuous but also quite tannic, the 2015 is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. Readers should expect a powerful, brooding Saint-Julien.”

Chateau Cos d’Estournel, Saint-Estèphe 2019 750ml $199 special, 7 bottles available
James Suckling 99 points
“This is so aromatic with blackcurrants, black berries and raspberries. Pure fruit, together with coffee and nutmeg. Really fresh and clean with bright spices. Full-bodied, yet reserved and tight with fantastic structure. So long. This is a great Cos for the cellar. A real benchmark for the true character. Needs at least five or six years to open and come around.”

Chateau Clos de Sarpe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2003 1.5L $119 special, 6 magnums available
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 92 points
“Medium garnet-brick colored, the 2003 Clos de Sarpe has quite an opulent nose with notes of powdered cinnamon, cloves and fenugreek over a core of baked cherries and dried mulberries with a waft of dusty soil. Medium-bodied, finely crafted and surprisingly elegant, it has a chewy frame and loads of perfumed fruit, finishing long and refreshing.”

This is the only listing in the USA today for the magnum!
Chateau Clos de Sarpe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2016 750ml $89 special, 35 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points
“An off-the-hook Saint-Emilion, the inky colored 2016 Château Clos de Sarpe is mostly Merlot but includes 15% Cabernet Franc. A beautiful, floral character gives way to more blueberry, raspberry, spice, and cedar notes, and it’s medium to full-bodied, fresh, and elegant on the palate, with thrilling purity of fruit. It’s still tight and reserved at the moment, with a focused feel on the palate, but has tons of potential. Give bottles 5-7 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following 15+.”

Chateau La Gaffeliere, Saint-Emilion 2018 750ml $99 special, 20 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 99 points
“The 2018 La Gaffelière is hands down one of the wines of the vintage. Towering in its stature and vertical lift, the 2018 dazzles right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, mocha, spice, licorice and leather all run through this deep, wonderfully pliant Saint-Émilion. The 2018 is rich, deep and beautifully resonant, with tremendous depth and tons of stature that builds, all framed by beams of supporting minerality that confer vibrancy. La Gaffelière is distinctive, alluring and arresting right out of the gate. It is another magnificent showing from this reborn estate. The blend is 63% Merlot and 37% Cabernet Franc. Magnifique!”

Chateau Labegorce, Margaux 2019 750ml $41.90 special, 24 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points
“Gorgeous notes of red, blue, and black fruits as well as sandalwood, tobacco leaf, chocolate, and spicy notes emerge from the 2019 Château Labégorce, one of the richer, more opulent, and straight-up sexy wines in the vintage. A blend of 46% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, all raised in 40% new oak, it’s medium to full-bodied, has beautifully integrated oak, a stacked mid-palate, and one heck of a great finish. Drink this rich, sensationally textured Margaux any time over the coming two decades. It’s unquestionably in the same league as the 2015, 2016, and 2018.”

Chateau Gloria, Saint-Julien 2019 750ml $49 special, 36+ bottles available
Neal Martin-Vinous 96 points
“The 2019 Gloria has a compelling nose: black fruit, crushed rocks, tobacco and very subtle marine scents that are all beautifully combined. Perhaps the most precise and delineated nose among an impressive array of Saint-Julien’s this year. The palate is medium-bodied with a lively opening. A touch of soy infuses the black fruit; fine-boned with wonderful sapidity on the finish. Extraordinary length. Serious.”
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points “Showing beautifully, with the polished, pure, elegant style of the vintage, the 2019 Château Gloria sports a deeper ruby/purple color as well as great aromatics of cassis and assorted blue fruits to go with smoked tobacco, cedar pencil, damp earth, and floral notes. I love its purity, and it’s just a quintessential, medium to full-bodied, layered Saint-Julien that can be drunk today or cellared for a solid two decades. It should be a no-brainer purchase for the wine lovers out there.”
Jane Anson 95 points “So good, this is a vibrant mix of young and exuberant, luxurious, seriously creamy in texture, crushed stone, baked earth, smoked caramel, damson, sweet blackberry and damson fruits. This is pure pleasure, hard to resist.”

Chateau Leoville Poyferre, Saint-Julien 2018 750ml $169 special, 7 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 100 points
“Every bit as good as the 2009, and I think better than the 2010 and 2016, the 2018 Château Léoville Poyferré is a total thrill that tops out my scale. Based on 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, its dense purple hue is followed by an incredible, full-bodied monster of a wine that, despite massive amounts of fruit, tannins, and extract, still stays weightless and ethereal, with incredible purity. Loaded with notions of crème de cassis, spring flowers, tobacco, violets, charcoal, and cedar pencil, it’s extraordinarily concentrated, flawlessly balanced, and has a finish that won’t quit. This is a legendary wine in the making. Give bottles 7-8 years, a decade would be even better, and it will keep for 40-50 years. Hats off to the Cuvelier family for another extraordinary wine!”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 97 points “A blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, aged in 80% new oak barriques, the 2018 Léoville Poyferré comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant scents of Morello cherries, plum preserves and blackberry pie, giving way to nuances of cedar chest, unsmoked cigars, vanilla pod and sassafras, plus a waft of crushed rocks. The palate is full-bodied, rich and decadent, delivering hedonic black fruits and lots of spicy accents with a velvety texture and seamless freshness, finishing long and satisfyingly savory. This is a very impressive showing that is delicious out of the gate but has the backbone to give a good 30 years or more of pleasure.”

Chateau Montrose, Saint-Estèphe 2019 750ml $219 special, 12 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 100 points
“The 2019 Montrose is very clearly one of the wines of the vintage. Rich, inky and towering in concentration, the 2019 possesses off the charts intensity and tons of structure to back it up. Succulent black cherry, plum, tobacco, gravel and licorice infuse the 2019 with striking depth. The 2019 is not quite as opulent as some recent vintages, and that’s a good thing. Readers will find a regal wine that marries elegance with power. Unforgettable. Tasted two times.”
Decanter 99 points “A generous and abundant nose full of fruit and aromatic intensity followed by a gorgeous mouthfeel showcasing fruit density and concentration wrapped up in soft, velvety-smooth tannins. Just so much depth but also refinement here, it feels well made with just the right amount of fruit, toasty spice, tannins, freshness and acidity. The overall structure is gently framing all the elements – big and bold but quietly confident. The tannin impact is also enjoyable giving a feeling of approachability despite the long life ahead. Just superb – one of the best in 2019. A blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. 12% press wine. 60% new oak. Drinking Window 2029-2046.”

Chateau Troplong Mondot, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2017 750ml $149 special, 12 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98+ points
“The 2017 Troplong Mondot is stunning, just as it was en primeur. Rich and ample, yet endowed with striking energy as well, the 2017 is the first vintage made by new CEO Aymeric de Gironde and consulting winemaker Thomas Duclos. The 2017 takes hold of all the senses and never lets up. All of the power that is typical of this site is evident, it seems to come so naturally, and yet picking earlier and then using a lighter hand in the cellar yielded a Troplong of uncommon energy and vibrancy. The 2017 has been nothing short of thrilling on the four occasions I have tasted it from bottle so far. What a wine!”

Sauternes
Ex-Chateau release
Chateau Suduiraut, Sauternes 2010 750ml $79 special, 18 bottles available
Decanter 95 points
“[Reviewed 2021] Tropical fruit flavours on the nose, caremelised pineapple with bright candied lemon alongside wonderfully sweet floral notes and a hint of burnt edges running through the wine from start to finish. This has a really characterful flavour with orange marmalade and a touch of enjoyable bitterness on the finish giving depth and roundness. Strong and robust, definitely a wine to enjoy with food be it sweet or savoury. A blend of 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, aged 50% in new barrels, 50% from barrels of one vintage for 20 months. Drinking Window 2021 – 2048.”

Chateau d’Yquem Sauternes 2019 375ml $219 special, 6 half-bottles available
Decanter 97 points
“The 2019 vintage of Château d’Yquem has the highest proportion (45%) of Sauvignon Blanc in any modern Yquem. The Sauvignon Blanc adds to the freshness, acting as a great balance to the succulent, sweet and voluptuous palate. Intense peach and apricot, combined with lemon and orange zest, make this highly appealing to drink right away – an ideal vintage with which to start Yquem’s ‘lighthouse’ project. However, it would be a shame not to give this 10+ years maturation to see how it develops. Very well, I suspect. The growing season was both warm and wet, with mildew a big threat. After a mostly dry September, 40mm rain came at the end of the month, leading to a very short harvest window. All of the Yquem grapes were picked in two tries within a one-week period. Residual Sugar: 138g/L.”
Wine Spectator 97 points “A special wine right from the start, this glistens with pure papaya, mango, white peach and mirabelle plum, joined by elderflower honey, toasted macadamia nut and orange blossom notes. Ends with a remarkably long finish. Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Drink now through 2050. 4,583 cases made.”

Chinon
Bernard Baudry Chinon La Croix Boissée Rouge, Loire 2017 750ml $54.50 special, 12 bottles available
Rebecca Gibb MW-Vinous 95 points
“La Croix Boissée is a vineyard that slopes up from the valley floor to the Chinon plateau close to Baudry’s domaine. The result in the 2017 Chinon is a mid-weight, elegant style offering dried herbs and smoked bacon – it’s a hint reduction that needs air. The finish is much more powerful than anticipated; there’s no shortage of tannins here, but they have the finest of powdery textures, making you lick the inside of your mouth (that’s the limestone of Croix Boissée that you see year after year). The lengthy finish is infused with spices – expect a hint of herbs, tea leaf and smoke.”

Bernard Baudry Chinon La Croix Boissée Rouge, Loire 2018 750ml $54.50 special, 12 bottles available
Rebecca Gibb MW-Vinous 96 points
“The ripeness of the 2018 vintage gives an almost Syrah/Viognier character to the Chinon La Croix Boissée, which offers sweet black fruit and a creamy apricot note. Sumptuous yet never ever opulent, it’s almost as if the wine’s just done a yoga class. Plentiful tannins give the inside of your cheeks a chalky rub, while there’s surprising freshness considering the ripeness, leading to a lengthy finish. This is a baby that will turn out to be a great adult.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2018 Chinon La Croix Boissée displays a deep, intense and elegant bouquet of dark fruits intertwined with black tea aromas. Silky, crystalline and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, fresh and refined Chinon that is slightly leathery toward the finish, which is long, intense and vivacious and has lingering salinity. The tannins are fine, elegant and well integrated yet still palatable. The 2018 might have some volatile acidity, but this makes it a true classic of the appellation and an authentic Baudry. Great aging capacity. Tasted in June 2021.”

Stephan Reinhardt- Wine Advocate 99 points
“The intensely lemon colored 2019 Kinheimer Rosenberg Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is pure and salty on the nose that reveals pretty unique flint stone aromas intertwined with perfectly ripe and precise Riesling berry aromas. Dense yet lush and highly refined on the palate, this is an enormously salty Auslese that is irresistible in its finesse and stimulating crystallinity. Absolutely gorgeous and salivating! “With aeration, this medium-bodied dry Pfalz riesling develops so many delicate spicy and floral notes. Compact structure and a long, tight finish suggest this has quite some aging potential. Drink or hold.”

Schafer-Frohlich Stromberg Grosses Gewachs Riesling, Nahe 2021 1.5L $259 special, 5 magnums available
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98-99 points
“The 2021 Stromberg GG offers a bright and pure, enormously radiant and earthy/herbal bouquet of crushed porphyry rocks and concentrated Riesling berry aromas intermingled with iodine notes. Great purity mixed with intensity and complexity. Full-bodied, refined and enormously salty on the palate, this is a compact, fresh and challenging dry Riesling with elegant and rich fruit, great density and no makeup at all. This is a bone dry but juicy wine that represents a long-distance runner with salty grip and tension. Tasted as a sample at the domaine in July 2022. Drink: 2027-2070.”

Wagner-Stempel Heerkretz Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Rheinhessen 2022 750ml $99 special, 12 bottles available
Stuart Pigott 99 points
“Still very young, but with a combination of great concentration, great tension and great minerality, this incredible dry riesling marries all of this with an astonishing gracefulness. With aeration in the glass aromas of a wide spectrum of exotic fruits, curry leaves and Thai basil develop. In spite of this extravagance on the mid-palate it is a prima ballerina standing en pointe. So pure and precise at the super-salty mineral finish you can’t resist. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”

Piedmont for your Pleasure: Barbaresco, Dolcetto, and Barbera

Top value pick for your table!
Francesco Rinaldi Dolcetto d’Alba Roussot 2019 750ml WAS $21.90 NOW $18 special, 24 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 90 points
“The 2019 Dolcetto d’Alba Roussot is a beautifully, classically austere wine that will appeal most to readers who appreciate traditionally made wines. Savory, earthy and spice nuances dominate, while primary fruit is pushed into the background. The 2019 is super attractive, but it also needs food to shine.”

Cantina del Pino Albesani, Barbaresco DOCG 2017 750ml WAS $59 NOW $49 special, 15 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Fruit from Albesani shows nice sharpness and a compact or complete profile that is typical of Nebbiolo. This site has fared well in this hot and dry vintage with intact aromas of wild berry, mineral and blue violets. The Cantina del Pino 2017 Barbaresco Albesani turns in a strong showing in terms of aromas but tapers out a bit in the palate. In this release of 3,000 bottles, the wine is driven largely by the textural and structural power of the vintage, and the fruit is a bit leaner on the finish right now. It will likely flesh out with time.”

Cantina del Pino Ovello, Barbaresco DOCG 2017 750ml WAS $59 NOW $49 special, 12 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94+ points
“Considering the untimely passing of Renato Vacca in March of 2020, there is a lot of emotion coming back to this wine: It has always been an expression of Barbaresco nostalgia and romanticism, even when its creator was alive and well, working in these vines located directly under his family house. The Cantina del Pino 2017 Barbaresco Ovello bears his winemaking imprint with balance and elegance that never misses a beat. This vintage offers more density and concentration for sure, and the positioning of the Ovello cru overlooking the Tanaro River Valley sets the wine up for open-knit characteristics and suave softness. Those impressions are amplified in this vintage but are not overblown.”

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Serraboella’, Barbaresco DOCG 2018 750ml WAS $41.90 NOW $38 special, 35 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“This wine draws its fruit from across the Serraboella vineyard in Neive with vines of various ages. The 2018 Barbaresco Serraboella has a broad reach, thanks to its balanced aromas of wild berry, dried cherry, crushed roses and violets. The wine spreads cleanly over the palate, thanks to the extra volume offered by its earthy and delicately mineral flavors. Like other releases from Paitin, the standout feature here is the silky nature of the mouthfeel.”

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Sorì Paitin’, Barbaresco DOCG 2018 750ml WAS $59 NOW $49 special, 36+ bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The family that owns the Paitin estate lost its patriarch, Secondo Pasquero Elia, as this wine was being readied for release, and he would have been proud of the way this turned out. The 2018 Barbaresco Serraboella Sorì Paitin is glossy and polished with a super fine and delicate quality of fruit. It just glides over the palate as if it were on skates. That beautiful forward momentum is driven by light cassis, dried cherry, iron skillet, candied orange peel and crushed flowers. The finish is exceptionally smooth and elegant. Complimenti.”

Rizzi Barbaresco Nervo, Barbaresco DOCG 2017 750ml WAS $59 NOW $49 special, 6 bottles available
Kerin O’Keefe-Wine Enthusiast 95 points
“Rose, violet and perfumed berry aromas lead the nose followed by whiffs of camphor and culinary spice. Full bodied, supremely elegant and surprisingly fresh for the hot vintage, the savory palate delivers ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and crushed mint alongside taut, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it impeccably balanced. Drink 2022–2032.”

Kerin O’Keefe-Wine Enthusiast 96 points
“Cellar Selection. Camphor, pipe tobacco, iris and mature black-skinned fruit aromas shape the nose on this full-bodied red. Delicious and structured, the firm palate delivers succulent black cherry, raspberry and licorice framed in firm, tightly knit but noble tannins. Drink 2023–2030.”

Francesco Rinaldi Barbera d’Alba 2017 750ml WAS $24 NOW $21.90 special, 13 bottles available
Winery Note
“The vineyards located in Barolo, in the flatter areas of the Cannubi hill, have a sandier soil; in La Morra, in the areas of Zonchetta and Boiolo, the soil is more clayey with calcareous components. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled cement or stainless steel tanks with the skins contact for at least 15 days. After racking, the various lots from the different vineyards are blended and then aged in medium-capacity Slavonian oak barrels for at least a year. Refinement in bottles for several months gives the wine a vibrant red ruby color with violet reflections and an ethereal and intense bouquet. The taste is dry, robust and suitable for medium-term aging.”

Neal Martin-Vinous 95-97 points
“The 2020 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is the first vintage where neither of the two barrels are new (both are a year old), as Damien Colin felt the 50% new oak was excessive. This results in a more austere nose, quite reserved, with enticing scents of greengage, wet pavement and freshly sliced grapefruit emerging. The palate is very well balanced with fine intensity on the entry, a very slight touch of white chocolate infusing the citrus fruit, and a harmonious and persistent finish. Excellent.”

William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93-95 points
“The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with aromas of pear, confit orange, lemon zest, white flowers, crisp green apple and buttery pastry. Full-bodied, satiny and multidimensional, it’s rich but chiseled, with chalky structuring extract and a long, expansive finish.”

Domaine Marc Colin et Fils Montrachet Grand Cru 2019 750ml $1,699 special, 1 bottle available
Jasper Morris 96-99 points
“The 2019 production consists of one normal 228l barrel and one of 285 litres neither, brand new. There are some toasty notes from the wood while the detailed elements of fruit remain covered by the intensity. This wine is sitting back on its haunches, really promising. There is a huge sweetness of fruit through the middle, a very proper toastiness, a fine acidity. This massive Montrachet still retains enough lightness on its feet despite the majesty of the vineyard. Long too. Of course!”

Domaine Marc Colin et Fils Montrachet Grand Cru 2020 750ml $1,999 special, 1 bottle available
Jasper Morris-Inside Burgundy 97-99 points
“Two barrels of one year old wood, racked yesterday but not sulphured. Clear noble lemon and lime. I think the racking has brought the bouquet forward: this certainly is more immediately readable than the Bâtard. Sublime, racy with such depth of character, picks out all the best bits of the preceding wines. Nothing super ripe, nothing over tense, just the correct balance at a majestic scale. Tasted: October 2021.”

Special Feature: La La Land of Brunello: October 2023

Do you drink Brunello?

You should.

If you haven’t noticed, Italy is consistently producing some of the best vintages and wines the market has ever witnessed in recent years. The trend extends across the entire country, from the racy and mineral driven reds and whites of volcanic Sicily to the perfumed and haunting wines of Piedmont. The entire nation has fully emerged from the slumber of rustic winemaking methods and now the pursuit of excellence is all-encompassing.

Perhaps no single region has felt this rebirth as much as Brunello di Montalcino. Back in the late 20th century there were only a handful of producers that were catching global attention and occupying spots on some of the finest wine lists in the world. Today, the gorgeous hilltown of Montalcino and its surrounding vineyards are bursting at the seams with top-class wineries and beautiful sangiovese grosso based wines.

Let us introduce you to La Fortuna and La Gerla. Both of these producers got their start in the 70’s and they’ve had a meteoric rise to the top of Brunello fan lists since the turn of the century. The wineries have similar vineyard positionings on both the North East and North West slopes of Montalcino itself and also significant holdings in Castelnuovo dell’Abate in the Southeast. The former produces wines of greater elegance and delicacy, while the Castelnuovo bottlings are more structured and rich in fruit.

What is Brunello like?

It’s as ageworthy as a Bordeaux and as delicately perfumed as a fine Barolo. Dark black cherry, licorice, tobacco and sun-kissed Italian herbs.

What distinguishes these estates? Small details but they matter! La Fortuna has a winemaking regimen that includes longer aging in wood of a smaller size (Slovenian oak) and longer maceration time for the grape skins. The result is that Fortuna wines are often richer than their La Gerla comparison and suit a palate more accustomed to bolder, textured reds of Bordeaux and Spain. La Gerla Brunello is more akin to Barolo in style with that distinctly Italian acidity and intense fragrance of cherries and licorice.

Both of these producers make wines that can age for 20 years no problem, and with time their aromas, texture, and overall structure become increasingly impossible to resist. If Brunello isn’t a substantial part of your wine cellar, you are missing out on some of the greatest wine experiences you never knew were possible.

Check out our top La Fortuna and La Gerla recommendations below with praise from the critics.

La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino 2013 750ml $59 special, 12 bottles available
Wine Spectator 92 Points “Starts out with cherry, iron and tobacco flavors, before firming up, with a solid structure. A kernel of fruit holds steady as this red unfolds on the lingering finish. Best from 2022 through 2036. 2,200 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.”

La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2016 750ml $99 special, 31 bottles available
Wine Advocate 95 points “The La Fortuna 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a wine of pretty Sangiovese purity. This Riserva (with 9,000 bottles produced) shows a darkly saturated color with plump and intense aromas of wild cherry, crushed flowers, fresh plums, spice and ferrous earth. Balsam herb and rosemary-like aromas round off the finish. There is great freshness, some oak tannins, a drying finish and lots of rich fruit fiber. This is a terrific wine from La Fortuna (although I need to point out the high 15.5% alcohol).”

La Gerla Brunello di Montalcino 2018 750ml $54.50  special, 36 bottles available
Wine Spectator 93 Points “A juicy style for the vintage, boasting cherry, raspberry, floral, graphite and spice flavors. Balanced and lively, with bright acidity and refined tannins for support. Shows fine length. Best from 2025 through 2042. 2,916 cases made, 1,250 cases imported.”

La Gerla Gli Angeli, Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2012 750ml $99 special, 7 bottles available
Vinous 95 points “Bright medium ruby. Very clean and fresh aromas and flavors of red currant, cherry pit, flowers and blood orange jelly. Bright, juicy and very light on its feet, offering superb vinosity and clarity of flavor, this conveys an impression of real underlying density and a multilayered mouthfeel. A knockout wine of outstanding energy and class, finishing with polished tannins, uncanny sweetness and lovely subtle persistence, not to mention outstanding balance (it hides its 14.5% alcohol very well).”
Wine Advocate 95 points “Here is a dense and meaty Tusan red that flaunts its immediate power, structure and intensity. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli is robust and deep thanks to a generous offering of dark fruit, spice and tar-like aromas. Fruit is carefully selected for this wine, and the grapes are fermented in stainless steel. Post fermentation, the wine goes into large Slavonian oak casks for four years. The finish is soft and supple with sweet berry flavors. This wine has made an impressive jump forward in this vintage.”

La Gerla Gli Angeli, Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2015 750ml $89 special, 18 bottles available
CLOSE-OUT SALE WAS $99 NOW $89
Wine Spectator 96 points “Rich and round, here is a red full of macerated plum and cherry flavors, with almond, leather, spice and earth accents. Firms up on the finish, where the vibrant fruit echoes. Best from 2025 through 2050. 500 cases made, 280 cases imported. — BS”
Wine Advocate 95 points “The La Gerla 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli is a softly textured and fleshed out wine that shows darker and deeper fruit (compared to the 2016 Brunello that I tasted at the same time). This wine makes a great first impression, mostly thanks to that sense of quiet balance. As it opens in the glass, I notice the pretty ripeness of the vintage with dark cherry and summer plum. In all, this Riserva gives us an accessible and rich expression that will perform nicely upon release. Production is 8,560 bottles, and this wine will hit the market in April 2021.”

La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2012 3L $399  special, 2 bottles available Available Nov. 3rd.
Wine Spectator 97 points “Perfumed, with wild herb aromas and a subtle mix of strawberry and cherry fruit. Vibrant and dense, with fine acidity driving the long finish. Though elegant, there is intensity and fine energy on the aftertaste. Best from 2022 through 2028.”

La Gerla Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2015 1.5L $119  special, 1 bottles available Available Nov. 3rd.
Wine Spectator 94 points “Black cherry and black currant fruit is accented by tobacco, earth and mineral flavors in this sleek yet dense red. Balsamic elements of juniper, thyme and olive add depth as this cruises to a long finish. The potential lies in the excellent length. Best from 2023 through 2042.”

La Gerla Gli Angeli Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2016 1.5L $219  special, 9 bottles available Available Nov. 3rd.
La Gerla Gli Angeli Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2016 3L $449  special, 2 bottles available Available Nov. 3rd.

Vinous 96 points Smoldering with remarkable depth, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gli Angeli makes itself known with a blend of spicy citrus peels and minty herbs giving way to masses of black cherry, strawberries, hints of iodine and smoke. This is a textural thrill ride, velvety and almost weighty in feel, while finding wonderful balance in its vibrant acidity and the tart wild berry fruits and savory spices that are unleashed upon the palate. Hints of mocha combine with sour cherry and almond paste through the impressively long and classically structured finale. In the end, the 2016 Gli Angeli is the total package. This Riserva is a single-vineyard bottling from La Gerla’s northern Montalcino vineyard, which was planted by Biondi-Santi in 1968.”

Chillable! Viña Maitia Aupa Pipeno Maule Valley 2022 750ml $14 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 92+ Points “I tasted a bottle of the 2022 Aupa Pipeño that had been in bottle for only one week. In 2022, David Marcel achieved a little less ripeness and alcohol (again 13%) and achieved a primary wine with very tender aromas with hints of tangerine peel, herbs and a serious mouthfeel with fine-grained tannins. It has 80% País and 20% Carignan that is expressive and easy to drink. 2022 was a small crop, but he produced around 70,000 bottles of this wine. Great value.”

Andre Clouet Chalky Brut NV 750ml $54.50 special, 9 bottles available
James Suckling 93 Points “[Reviewed 2021] Brimming with fresh apple, lemon and wild-berry aromas underlined by a note of freshly baked baguette, this begins so charming, then it turns in a fascinating mineral direction with a pronounced saline quality. The excitement comes from the tension between these two sides of this very distinctive champagne. Very long, chalky finish. 100% chardonnay from the 2013 vintage. Drink now.”

Larmandier-Bernier Les Chemins d’Avize Grand Cru Extra Brut, Champagne 2013 750ml $149 special, only 12 bottles available
Wine Advocate 96 points “Revisited from the October 2019 disgorgement, Larmandier-Bernier’s 2013 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Les Chemins d’Avize continues to show brilliantly, offering up complex aromas of argan oil, fresh apricot and crisp yellow orchard fruit, complemented by hints of fresh walnuts and almond paste. Full-bodied, deep and vinous, it’s layered and elegantly fleshy, with a concentrated core of ripe fruit, racy acids and a long, mineral finish. As I wrote last year, Pierre Larmandier invariably excels in cool, late-growing seasons, so the 2013 vintage was perfectly adapted to his talents.” -William Kelley

Larmandier-Bernier Vieilles Vignes du Levant Grand Cru Extra Brut, Champagne 2011 750ml $119 special, only 1 bottle available
Wine Advocate 97 points “Revisited from the June 2019 disgorgment, Larmandier-Bernier’s 2011 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Vieille Vigne du Levant continues to drink superbly, bursting from the glass with aromas of pear, peach, toasted almonds, white flowers, fresh bread and oyster shell. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it’s deep and fleshy, with superb concentration, racy acids and a long, saline finish. I have previously contended that Pierre Larmandier produced Champagne’s wines-of-the-vintage in 2011, and every bottle I open seems to confirm that. Indeed, if one were to taste only his wines, along with those produced by a small handful of other growers, one could easily think very differently about this unheralded year.” -William Kelley

“Laurent Perrier”
To make this exceptional champagne three top vintages must be blended and aged an unbelievable 10 years sur-lee. A majority of Chardonnay complemented by Pinot Noir from a maximum of 11 Grands Crus out of the 319 Crus in the Champagne region. Aged for 10 years on the lees for the bottle format and a few more years for the magnum format.

A white gold in color with delicate and persistent bubbles, Grand Siecle No. 26 offers a very complex nose which mixes honeysuckle, lemon, clementine and fresh butter aromas, followed by notes of hazelnut and a touch of honey. The feel in the mouth is very delicate and fresh with candied lemon and fresh hazelnut aromas. The palate is silky and mineral with notes of honeysuckle, flaked almonds and clementine.

Laurent Perrier Grand Siecle no 26 NV 750ml $219 special, 2 bottles available
James Suckling 100 Points “This is really something. Electric on the palate. The aromas are so complex with sliced fresh and dried ginger, subtle pie crust, tarte tatin and hints of nutmeg with some salted caramel. Toasted bread, too. Always subtle. The palate is full- to medium-bodied yet hemmed-in with a freshness and balance that draws you back. Savory and vibrant. It’s full of energy. Spectacular. Fascinating. Symphonic blend of 2012, 2008 and 2007. 65% of the 2012, 25% of the 2008 and 10% of the 2007. Eight grand cru. Chardonnay 58% and 42% pinot noir. Disgorged February 2023. 10 years on the lees. 7g/L dosage. Drink or hold.”
Janis Robinson 19.5/20 “Powerful aroma of orange peel and something in the putty/chalk spectrum. It somehow manages to be both tight yet approachable, dense in terms of flavour concentration yet filigree in terms of texture. As usual, it’s so Chardonnay! Overriding citrus character and quite amazingly long, a mouthful tingling on the palate for minutes not seconds. Enormous finesse. Massive pleasure. This would make the most luxurious aperitif. Michel Fauconnet, having welcomed the new chef de cave in January 2023, must be especially proud of this wine.”

Located in the epicenter of Washington State’s premiere Wine Country, DVV calls the Walla Walla Valley home. This rolling valley, back dropped by the Blue Mountains, has historically been landscaped by golden wheat fields, green vegetable fields (the Walla Walla Sweet Onion our favorite) and fruit orchards. However, this oasis has quickly become home to world class vineyards and wines.

Dusted Valley Stained Tooth Syrah, Columbia Valley 2020 750ml $29 special, 36 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 92 Points “A co-fermented blend of 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier, the 2020 Syrah Stained Tooth sports a medium ruby/plum color as well as great nose of ripe black raspberry and blueberry fruit, iron, peppery herbs, and bacon fat. It’s medium to full-bodied, has lots of fruit, ripe tannins, and an outstanding finish.”
James Suckling 91 Points “Ripe and mellow plums and mulberries with chocolate and sweet spices. Citrus peel, too. Rich and juicy with medium to full body, firm tannins and bright acidity. Flavorful and satisfying. Drink now.”

Vinous 95 Points “The 2016 Bianco Arboreus has gained volume and depth since I lasted tasted it, wafting up unexpectedly rich and tropical in the glass, with a burst of exotic florals, ginger and spices giving way to freshly sliced nectarine. It’s round and supple on the palate, with a flourish of saline minerality, lime-tinged pit fruits and hints of sour kiwi that cascade throughout. This tapers off with a honeyed inner sweetness contrasted by a salty twang, lasting incredibly long yet still remarkably fresh. The 2016 is flat-out gorgeous.”

Cerbaia Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2016 750ml $49 special, 36 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93+ points “The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is a dark and rich expression with a generous delivery of dark fruit—prune, plum and black cherry. The vines are planted in galestro soils with clay and shale in a 3.5-hectare plot, resulting in a 14,000-bottle production. Winemaking is simple, with fermentation in steel and aging in botte grande for three years. There is some extra density or heaviness to the fruit that feels reinforced by the oak notes and ultimately by the wine’s tannins. This wine will be released in April 2021, and that sounds about right because it needs more time.”

Winery note “To understand Rhinestones we have to talk about the Cheverny region of France’s Loire Valley where, by law, the red wines must be a blend of Gamay and Pinot Noir.  We follow this stricture with all the Pinot and Gamay fruit we source from Johan Vineyard.  The blend is determined by nature and vintage.  Aged in a mixture of concrete and old barriques, this wine is the flagship of the Bow & Arrow operation and communicates what we’re about as much as anything we make.  Effortlessly drinkable but rewards detective work if you’re in the mood.”

Coe Cellars Mission Hill Sangiovese 2020 750ml $24 special, 21 bottles available
STAFF PICK!!!
Vinopolnote “Coe Cellars produces just one wine: a 100% Sangiovese Grosso (the specific clone used in Brunello Di Montalcino production) grown exclusively in the Mission Hill Vineyard in Walla Walla. Dedicated to making “as old world of a wine in the New World as possible,” Coe Cellars’ Sangiovese has a ripe cherry profile, with hints of savory dried herbs around the edges, lithe tannins, and a pleasantly tart finish. Blind fold us and we’d swear this is from Tuscany.”

NEW!  Durant Vineyards Dundee Estate Pinot Noir 2021 750ml $24 special, 16 bottles available
Winery Note “The entrance to the 2021 Pinot Noir is fresh and complex. The mid palate fills with layers of texture and weight. This wine has gorgeous fruit, spice, and herbs all framed with integrated barrel, skin and stem tannins. The stays vibrant while lingering long after the last sip.”

Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2022 750ml $24 special, 33 bottles available
Winery Notes “This vintage of the WV blend shows a bright nose with cherry, red apple, fresh flowers, and a touch of loam along with a textural creamy/silkiness component that’s balanced by juicy acid. Showing well now, watch this wine evolve over the next 8-10 years.”

JK Carriere Provocateur Pinot Noir 2021 750ml $24 special, 11 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 90 Points “Spicy, ripe cologne lifts from the 2021 Pinot Noir Provocateur. A deep and opaque ruby red, it reveals aromas of pine, woodsy herbs, and black cherry, and on the palate it’s full-bodied but light on its feet, with a bright spine of acidity, a lovely match of density and fresh acidity, ripe, woodsy tannins, and a long finish. Dark fruited, with great acidity, it will need a quick decant if opening in its early life. Drink 2024-2030. It offers a great value and is a nice way to sample the style of the house.”

Peter William Grenache 2019 750ml $24 special, 8 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 92 Points “This is an exquisite example of the variety. The aromas pop, with pure notes of raspberry, orange twist and white pepper. Plump, pillowy fruit flavors follow. The purity is captivating. It’s an outrageous value.” -Sean P. Sullivan

Chermette Vissoux Brouilly Pierreux 2018 750ml WAS $29 NOW $24 special, 30 bottles available
Wine Advocate 91 Points “Aromas of raspberries, plums and orange rind preface the 2018 Brouilly Pierreux, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy wine with a satiny attack that segues into a fine-boned, elegantly structured mid-palate, with lively acids and a fragrant, expansive finish. This cuvée, which sees six months’ élevage in old foudres, has turned out very well.” -William Kelley

Chermette Vissoux Saint Amour 2018 750ml WAS $29 NOW $24, 23 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92+ Points “The 2018 Saint-Amour Les Champs-Grillés is a serious wine, “not just for Valentine’s Day,” as Jean-Étienne Chermette observes. Revealing attractive notes of raspberries, rose petals and cherries, it’s medium to full-bodied, layered and spicy, with a muscular chassis of fine, powdery tannins. As usual, it’s a cuvée that stands to gain from a couple of years in the cellar.” -William Kelley

Guy Charlemagne Brut Mesnillesime Grand Cru 2014 750ml WAS $119 NOW $99 special, 34 bottles available
Winery Note “A Grand Champagne with character from the Côte des Blancs terroir, specifically from Le Mesnil sur Oger (limestone parcels averaging 60 years of age). This champagne produced from first press of Le Mesnil sur Oger Grand Cru juices, highlights the exact characteristic of our village. Jewel of the Charlemagne house, this vintage wine combines both authenticity and the search for perfect quality. Elegantly presented with exceptional labelling, this Mesnillesime cuvee is produced with rigorous vinification, partially in oak barrels without malolactic fermentation, and a very light dosage of 4 grams per liter. Matured for 6 years in our chalk underground cellars, this cuvee highlights the excellence of our production.

Denis Chaput Noir De Jade Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut NV 750ml WAS $45 NOW $39 special, 15 bottles available
Winemaker Notes “Pale golden yellow colour with silvery grey highlights, this cuvée presents fine, very persistent bubbles. The nose is dominated by aromas of smoked limestone, iodine sea spray, blackcurrant, grapefruit, liquorice, blackberry, pomegranate and elderberries. On the palate, the attack is clean and fresh, with a soft, creamy effervescence. Fruity, full-bodied and crisp, the mid-palate is enhanced by a grapefruity acidity and a marly minerality that gives this champagne breadth and salinity. The finish is fresh, stony and juicy.”

Lanson Brut Pere et Fils NV 750ml WAS $49 NOW $39 special, 7 bottles available
Winemaker Note “Lanson ‘Père & Fils’ Brut is a brand new, enriched evolution of the classic Lanson Black Label Brut, and is named after the first bottle of Champagne Lanson ever produced. Created as a tribute to the Lanson family , Champagne Lanson ‘Père & Fils’ is aged in the cellars for a minimum of 4 years to allow the wine to flourish and its aromas to develop perfectly. Blended using a selection of the best Champagne Crus from 10 different vintages, the result is a rich, elegant Champagne with a fresh finish.

Duclaux Cote Rotie Maison Rouge 2018 750ml WAS $79 NOW $69 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 96 Points “From arguably the most famous lieu-dit in the southern portion of the appellation, the Duclaux brothers’ 2018 Cote Rotie Maison Rouge is a showstopper. Scents of violets, stone fruit, anise-like spice and mixed berries combine to create a complex nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is concentrated yet supremely silky, smooth and charming, ending long and elegant. It’s a superb example of the generally softer, more elegant style found around Tupin et Semons.” -Joe Czerwinski

Domaine du Tunnel Cornas 2018 750ml WAS $79 NOW $69 special, 31 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 95-97 Points “Readers looking for the essence of Cornas would do well to pick up a case of the 2018 Cornas. Deep purple, with a heavenly bouquet of blueberries, raspberries, crushed violets, olives, ground pepper, and gamey meats, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a balanced, classy texture, building yet polished tannins, and a great finish. It’s a winner.”

Monteillet Condrieu Chanson 2018 750ml WAS $69 NOW $59 special, 13 bottles available
Decanter 96 Points “Fresh, keen and tense, with lime marmalade and touches of bubblegum. There’s delicious richness and real depth to the fruit, delivering great concentration and lovely acidity. From lieu-dit Chanson and aged for 22 months in oak on the lees, Stéphane Montez explains that a long élevage like this helps to decrease alcohol levels, is better for ageing, stimulates complex tertiary flavours and means you can decrease sulfite levels as the wine is protected from oxidation by the lees.”

Dal Forno– The Superior Valpolicella

In many wine areas throughout the world, there are a handful of individuals or families who make “the” wine for their particular region – winemakers who define the style of the region. When it comes to Valpolicella, the Dal Forno family does just that. For more than 30 years, Dal Forno has been producing deeply concentrated Valpolicella and Amarone.

Romano Dal Forno, the current winemaker/owner, took over the farm in 1983. Risking everything, he invested a large amount in 1990 to update the winery and refine Dal Forno’s process. The extremely bold flavor of the Valpolicella Superiore is a great example of Dal Forno’s commitment to perfection and their respect for traditional winemaking. Just short of an Amarone, it’s made entirely with fruit that has been dried, though for less time than that legally required for Amarone. A key to the Dal Forno style seems to be an incredibly low yield from their vineyard: each bottle of Valpolicella takes six vines worth of grapes to produce!

Dal Forno Romano Valpolicella Superiore 2017 750ml $138 special, 12 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 95 Points “Taking in the 2017 Valpolicella Superiore Monte Lodoletta reminds me of all of the desserts, spices and confections experienced on Christmas day. An array of medicinal cherries, plum sauce, ginger cookies, cloves, cinnamon and dried roses captivate. There’s tremendous depth here, but it maintains fantastic freshness. This is wildly spicy and intense, yet deep, with brilliant acidity adding energy seldom found in Valpolicella, which enlivens the crunchy red fruits and pretty inner florals within. The 2017 finishes dramatically long and perfumed, resonating on sour blackberries, currants and a bitter hint of cocoa. This goes far beyond the expectation of Valpolicella, with the power and aromatics of an Amarone but with a liveliness that will allow it to excel at the dinner table.”

Dal Forno Romano Amarone 2011 750ml $299 special, 6 bottles available
Decanter 99 Points “The strongest wine in my selection, yet this magnificent Amarone’s alcohol is barely visible thanks to its astonishing depth, texture and sumptuousness. Pressed black fruits seep with fruit essences; smoke and cinders; herbal complexities; teasing floral notes, all engraved into a palate that expresses creamy finesse but without a trace of superfluous fat, heat or obviousness. Beautifully crafted, as dignified as any grand Barolo.”

Dal Forno Romano Amarone 2012 750ml $379 special, 14 bottles available
James Suckling 97 Points “A decadent nose of treacle tart, chocolate, tar, tons of black fruit such as blackberries and mulberries and even ash and licorice. A dense, layered mouthfeel makes for a full-bodied palate that’s explosive yet somehow so refined and pretty all at the same time. The finish goes on and on. Incredible now, but better to wait for this giant to settle well into 2020.”

Dal Forno Romano Amarone 2015 750ml $399 special, 12 bottles available
100 Points James Suckling “This is black as pitch in the glass and, yes, there’s a light, tarry edge to the super-concentrated prune, date and currant fruit. But even more interesting are the complex notes of bitter-orange liqueur, aged balsamic, fresh roasting herbs, cinnamon, roasted chestnuts, black tea and licorice. The more you decant in advance, the more nuances will emerge. It’s full-boded with huge concentration and lots of chewy tannin that is managing to hold the fruit back for now. This needs plenty of time to develop in the bottle. Just superb. One of the greatest Dal Forno’s ever.”

Dal Forno Romano Amarone Valpolicella 2017 750ml $449 special, 6 bottles available
Vinous 97 Points “This is dark, sultry and almost animalistic in nature, as crushed fall leaves and earth tones open the experience, giving way to masses of macerated black cherries, cedar shavings, spiced cookies, and a lifting hint of camphor. It floods the palate with velvety textures while maintaining fantastic energy, as stimulating acidity adds unexpected vibrancy, and tart wild berries slowly saturate. While structured, the tannins are sweet, and the wine remains remarkably fresh, almost crunchy, as an air of inner rose and balsam herbs slowly fades.”

Dal Forno Romano Valpolicella Superiore 2007 750ml $179 special, 2 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2007 Valpolicella Superiore from the celebrated Monte Lodoletta vineyard is rock-tight with a midnight black appearance and aromas that emerge with fierce determination. The fascinating aromatic medley includes dark spice, prune, Spanish cedar, tar, black licorice, balsam herb and blackberry tart. The mouthfeel is plush and rich with super-tight tannins that grip nervously to the finish. It has only started its bottle evolution and requires more time to soften and develop. Drink 2017-2035.” -Monica Larner

Dal Forno Romano Valpolicella Superiore 2008 750ml $169 special, 4 bottles available
Vinous 94 points “A dark, super-ripe wine, the 2008 Valpolicella Superiore is fabulous in this vintage. Smoke, tar, incense, licorice and blackberry jam hit the palate in a massive, intense Valpolicella loaded with class and personality. Even with all of the concentration, the 2008 is quite a bit less tannic than some recent vintages have been, which makes it accessible even today, especially if given a little air. There is a lot to admire in this drop-dead gorgeous Valpolicella from Romano Dal Forno.” -Antonio Galloni

Dal Forno Romano Valpolicella Superiore 2009 $159 special, 4 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94+ Points “Built like a tank, the 2009 Valpolicella Superiore Monte Lodoletta is a masterful achievement. This wine shows so beautifully, especially in a warm but balanced vintage like 2009. The fruit is expressive and articulate with deep layers of blackberry preserves, dried cherry, dark chocolate, espresso bean, mesquite smoke and soy sauce. The mouthfeel is super rich and concentrated as the Dal Forno signature style would dictate. The tannic bite is still strong and this wine needs a few more years to stretch out its muscular build. I’d suggest drinking it after 2018.” -Monica Larner

Dal Forno Romano Valpolicella Superiore 2015 750ml $119 special, 3 bottles available
James Suckling 96 Points “Such a profound nose of fresh and dried fruit with blackcurrants, dates and prunes, together with lighter notes of mild spice and pomegranate seeds. The fresher elements provide the drive on the full palate and, together with very fine, bright, fine-grained tannins, give a long, chewy yet fresh and pruney finish. Hugely concentrated, but the balance and poise is impeccable. There’s no denying the classic quality of this. Delicious to taste now, but this needs a few years to integrate. Try from 2025.”

Dal Forno Romano Valpolicella Superiore 2016 750ml $119 special, 10 bottles available
Wilson Daniels Importer Note “The Dal Forno family has been making wine since 1983. Located in Val D’Illasi, the estate consists of 65 acres of vines planted to traditional indigenous varieties of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Oseleta and Croatina. The estate vineyards and farm are located where the slopes begin to rise toward the mountains and sit 1,000 feet above sea level. The loose, alluvial soils, meticulous pruning and scrupulous viticultural techniques ensure remarkable-quality grapes. The Dal Fornos use traditional methods to grow the finest fruit, and then employ modern techniques to produce the best wines — classic in expression and modern in purity.”

Laurent Perrier Grand Siecle no. 26 NV 750ml $219 special, 6 bottles available

Pierre and Sophie Larmandier, of Larmandier-Bernier, having holdings in the Côte des Blancs region of Champagne, including in the grand crus villages of Cramant, Chouilly, Oger, and Avize. The estate is meticulously run (by hand) at this small, independent estate. The moderate yields are harvested by hand, and the grapes undergo gentle pressing and a long settling process on the lees, with native yeast fermentation. The wines rest in in family’s chalk caves, awaiting hand disgorgement before going to market after a period of settling.

The results are the Champagnes of depth, transparency, and precision, with notes of “striking salinity,” “deep and vinous” layers, and a plethora of “wines-of-the-vintage.” We’re excited to restock on two exquisite vintage Champagnes that sold out here previously, arriving tomorrow.

Larmandier-Bernier Les Chemins d’Avize Grand Cru Extra Brut, Champagne 2013 750ml $149 pre-arrival special, only 12 bottles available
Vinous 94 points “The 2013 Extra Brut Les Chemins d’Avize Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru is floral and gracious, much more so than is common in Avize Champagnes, which tend to have more body. The 2013 is beautifully perfumed and ethereal from start to finish, with striking beams of salinity that confer tension. Candied lemon peel, white flowers, spice, hazelnut, dried flowers and chamomile are some of the many notes that are laced together. This subtle, wonderfully nuanced Champagne has so much to offer. It is the most restrained wine in this range. The Chemins d’Avize is a blend of fruit from Chemin de Plivot and Chemin de Flavigny, done in neutral oak. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. Disgorged: October, 2019.” –Antonio Galloni

Larmandier-Bernier Vieilles Vignes du Levant Grand Cru Extra Brut, Champagne 2011 750ml $119 pre-arrival special, only 6 bottles available
Decanter 95 points “This masterful Champagne comes from the superb Bourron du Levant vineyard, whose oldest vines were planted more than 80 years ago. Brown butter, hazelnut and brioche lead the initial attack, but this never loses sight of freshness and purity, with a crystalline depth and harmonious balance. Fermented in cask with eight years on the lees, this should last for decades. Drinking Window 2020 – 2050.”

Guy Larmandier Cramant Grand Cru BDB Brut NV, Champagne $59 special, 26 bottles available
Importer’s Note “From Chardonnay vines in the Grand Cru village of Cramant. The total absence of any sense of sweetness in this Brut Zéro allows the limestone to take center stage, and it presents in a more piercing and saline manner than in Larmandier’s Brut wines. Despite its relative rigorousness and austerity, however, this is by no means a difficult wine. Rather, it will appeal to those who relish the sort of palpable, intense mineral character Champagne is capable of when made in such a straightforward fashion. Aged 3 years sur lattes.”

Chateau Clos de Sarpe is a tiny estate tucked in the northeastern park of St. Emilion. Here, the soil is layered with limestone and chalk beneath a dusting of clay. Aged on the lees for six months in new oak, these Merlot-dominated blends are powerful and impactful, with rich tannic structure and a vibrant mineral core. In style, these wines are, to quote the Wine Cellar Insider, a “throwback to the ancient days of Bordeaux winemaking.” They promise to reward after a long sleep in the cellar, or, to those impatient folks, there are rewards to be found in late-release magnums!

Chateau Clos de Sarpe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2003 1.5L $119 pre-arrival special, only 6 magnums available
Wine Advocate 92 points “Medium garnet-brick colored, the 2003 Clos de Sarpe has quite an opulent nose with notes of powdered cinnamon, cloves and fenugreek over a core of baked cherries and dried mulberries with a waft of dusty soil. Medium-bodied, finely crafted and surprisingly elegant, it has a chewy frame and loads of perfumed fruit, finishing long and refreshing.” -Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Chateau Clos de Sarpe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2016 750ml $89 pre-arrival special, 35 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points “An off-the-hook Saint-Emilion, the inky colored 2016 Château Clos de Sarpe is mostly Merlot but includes 15% Cabernet Franc.
Wine Advocate 95 points “Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Clos de Sarpe (composed of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc) is a little closed to begin, opening out to reveal provocative Black Forest cake, Chinese five spice and cigar box notes with nuances of sandalwood, kirsch, rose hip tea and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, rich and opulent in the mouth, the palate is oh-so-seductive with a beautiful velvety texture and tons of freshness lifting the decadent fruit to a long spicy finish.
Vinous 94 points “The 2016 Clos de Sarpe is an exotic, full-throttle wine. Expressive floral, white pepper and espresso notes add a super-appealing upper register of aromatic intensity to a core of ripe, red cherry/plum fruit. Sumptuous and racy, Clos de Sarpe remains one of the most distinctive wines being made in Bordeaux today. The 2016 is a bit less over the top than some of the vintages that precede it, but Clos de Sarpe still pushes the outer edges of ripeness and overall intensity. I find it absolutely compelling, but there is no question Clos de Sarpe is not a wine for all palates.” -Antonio Galloni

What Saint-Julien lacks for in first growth estates, it more than makes up for it in the three Léovilles of Barton, Las Cases, and Poyferré. Beloved for centuries, these estates and this terroir offer an experience that, especially when price is considered, rivals the Moutons and Latours. Perhaps not a household name, Poyferré is known among Bordeaux insiders as producing a “voluptuous” wine, to quote Jane Anson of Decanter. She attributes this in part to its high proportion of Merlot. These are hedonistic and deeply rewarding, wines to convince the most stubborn of American-only Cab drinkers that there’s life and joy to be found in Bordeaux.

Chateau Leoville Poyferre, Saint-Julien 2018 750ml $169 pre-arrival special, only 12 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 100 points “Every bit as good as the 2009, and I think better than the 2010 and 2016, the 2018 Château Léoville Poyferré is a total thrill that tops out my scale.
Wine Advocate 97 points “A blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, aged in 80% new oak barriques, the 2018 Léoville Poyferré comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant scents of Morello cherries, plum preserves and blackberry pie, giving way to nuances of cedar chest, unsmoked cigars, vanilla pod and sassafras, plus a waft of crushed rocks. The palate is full-bodied, rich and decadent, delivering hedonic black fruits and lots of spicy accents with a velvety texture and seamless freshness, finishing long and satisfyingly savory. This is a very impressive showing that is delicious out of the gate but has the backbone to give a good 30 years or more of pleasure.” -Lisa Perrotti-Brown
Decanter 97 points “Deep, silky, and satiny in texture, you can practically stroke this in the glass! The round mouthfeel tells of ripe fruit and generous alcohol but there’s not a trace of heat, and the balance is gorgeous. Tannins match you step for step, stopping for breath in all the right places. They keep the luscious black cherry, liquorice and dark chocolate all in place. The 2016 vintage was almost one degree less in alcohol, and certainly this is a little less architectural in its construction, but that extra percent has clearly gone a long way to covering the tannins in silk. 3.7pH. IPT90. Tasted several times.”
Wine Spectator 97 points “Waves of warmed cassis, mocha and warm tar aromas lead the way, while the core of macerated plum, blackberry and blueberry fruit waits its turn, showing admirable breadth and depth when it arrives, with roasted apple wood, bramble and cast iron buried deeply through the finish. This is a powerfully rendered wine with a cashmere scarf as accent. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2024 through 2040. 15,000 cases made.”

“This is a very fine 2010 Sauternes” –Neal Martin

Chateau Suduiraut, Sauternes 2010 750ml $79 pre-arrival special, only 18 bottles available
Ex-Chateau release
Decanter 95 points “[Reviewed 2021] Tropical fruit flavors on the nose, caramelized pineapple with bright candied lemon alongside wonderfully sweet floral notes and a hint of burnt edges running through the wine from start to finish. This has a really characterful flavour with orange marmalade and a touch of enjoyable bitterness on the finish giving depth and roundness. Strong and robust, definitely a wine to enjoy with food be it sweet or savory. A blend of 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, aged 50% in new barrels, 50% from barrels of one vintage for 20 months. Drinking Window 2021 – 2048.”
Vinous 95 points “[Reviewed 2020] The 2010 Suduiraut has an attractive bouquet with notes of Mirabelle, jasmine and saffron infusing the upfront honeyed fruit. This is no shy retiring wallflower. The palate is well balanced with a viscous opening, lightly spiced with a pleasant bitter note that lends tension on the finish. Good length, this is a very fine 2010 Sauternes. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal.” -Neal Martin
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “Cellar Selection. This is a gorgeously ripe, opulent wine that shows a rich fruit-salad ripeness, as well as darker notes of botrytis. The wine is full and very ripe with flavors of honey, fennel and lemon, with sweetness balanced by acidity. This is a wine that could be drunk soon but will age magnificently. Drink from 2016. -Roger Voss”

2016 was an excellent year across much of Europe, and the vintage produced Brunello di Montalcino of exceptional quality. Even for a region known for world-class wines, these are all-timers. Lucky for you, we were able to source more of this incredible 2016 from this tiny boutique winery: Cerbaia. It’s just about to enter its prime drinking window, so buy a few for the cellar and decant what you can’t keep your hands off of.

Cerbaia Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2016 750ml $49 pre-arrival special, 36 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 93 points “The 2016 Cerbaia is lifted with notes of raspberry, sour cherry, thyme, and dusty earth. The palate is brisk with fresh red fruits and tea leaf, while structured with lingering tannin and driving acidity. It needs time to loosen its grip and will be welcome over several years to come. It was aged for three years in large Slavonian oak and is sourced from Cerbaia’s largest vineyard, planted in 1989. Drink 2025-2036.” -Monica Larner

“Racines, Sta Rita Hills: The closest things to Burgundy and Champagne you’ll find in The USA”

Inspired by their mutual love of travel, Étienne Montille of Burgundy’s Domaine de Montille and Rodolphe Péters of Champagne Pierre Peters travelled all around Oregon and California searching for their first business venture outside of their own, but it was not until they walked the land and felt the cool air in the Santa Rita Hills, that they were inspired to put down roots.

The name they chose, Racines, literally means “Roots” in French and is the perfect distillation of what makes this winery so special: a pure and joyous celebration of Santa Rita Hill’s old vines, the cultural traditions of French wine, and the storied heritage of the producer’s families and Chateaus.

Racines Grand Reserve Sparkling Chardonnay NV $66 pre-arrival special, 36 bottles available
Decanter 96 Points “This is the best American sparkling wine I’ve ever tasted.
Vinous 94 Points “The NV Sparkling Wine Grand Reserve is the first release in Racines’ sparkling wine project, done in collaboration with Rodolphe Peters. The first thing about the Grand Reserve readers Central Coast need to know is that it is a serious wine that greatly benefits from aeration. In fact, it only improved over the several days I followed it in bottle. My initial impression, however, was far less positive. So patience is key. Rich, ample and creamy with air, the Grand Reserve shows the rich, phenolic, mineral side of Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay to great effect. Moreover, it has all the elements that are so often missing in the new wave of California sparkling wines, namely a fine mousse, good mid-palate depth and a long finish. The Racines sparkling wine is a work in progress, but the debut release is hugely promising.”

Racines Rinconada Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018 750ml $99 pre-arrival special, 6 bottles available
Decanter 96 Points “This Santa Rita Hills-focused label between Justin Willett and Étienne de Montille takes a ‘low and slow’ approach to the winemaking process, contrasting the relatively delicate, high-toned style of the Tyler wines.

Racines Sanford & Benedict Chardonnay 2020 750ml $99 pre-arrival special, 6 bottles available
Decanter 95 Points “The historic Chardonnay parcel of original and own-rooted plantings dates back to 1971.

Racines Sanford & Benedict Pinot Noir 2020 750ml $115 pre-arrival special, 12 bottles available
Decanter 94 Points “Sanford & Benedict vineyard is the Santa Rita Hills’ highest calling for Pinot Noir grapes.

Racines Sainte-Rose Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2020 750ml $79 pre-arrival special, 12 bottles available
Decanter 94 Points “From organic vineyards along the Santa Rosa Road corridor, this Pinot Noir from Racines is a straightforward cooler site Pinot Noir from Santa Rita Hills. Aromas of strawberry fruit leather give way to notes of turned earth and crushed black basalt. The palate is savoury, with underlying dried fruit flavors. Montmorency cherries, garden soil and clove, evolve into notes of savoury herbs and streaks of graphite minerality.”

Racines Santa Rita Hills Chardonnay 2020 750ml $55 pre-arrival special, 36 bottles available
Decanter 93 Points “A wonderfully complex wine with ample texture.

Racines Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2020 750ml $54.50 pre-arrival special, 24 bottles available
Vinous 93 Points “The 2020 Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills Cuvée is a terrific introduction to the range. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, spice, rose petal and a touch of whole cluster savoriness are all beautifully delineated. This is such a gorgeous and expressive Pinot.”

Racines Wenzlau Chardonnay 2020 750ml $89 pre-arrival special, 24 bottles available
Decanter 95 Points “Beguiling complexity, depth and beauty mark this outstanding Chardonnay from the Wenzlau Family Vineyard in the Sta Rita Hills.
Vinous 94 Points “The 2020 Chardonnay Wenzlau Family Vineyard is one of the highlights in this range from Racines. Bright and dynamic, the 2020 is fresh, complex and also quite structured, making for a wonderfully complete wine that captures the essence of this rugged Sta. Rita Hills site. Readers should expect an intensely mineral, savory Chardonnay. I loved it.”

Schafer-Frohlich Stromberg GG Riesling, Nahe 2021 $115 pre-arrival special, 6 bottles arriving
Wine Advocate 98-99 points “The 2021 Stromberg GG offers a bright and pure, enormously radiant and earthy/herbal bouquet of crushed porphyry rocks and concentrated Riesling berry aromas intermingled with iodine notes. Drink: 2027-2070. (Aug 2022)”
-Stephan Reinhardt
JamesSuckling.com 97 points “Take a trip under the volcano! Still a touch of youthful, leesy funk, but that doesn’t distract from the fascinating hibiscus, flint and wild-herb aromas. How this concentration of minerality can be crammed into a silhouette this sleek is also a mystery to me, but clearly it’s possible! Diamond-bright finish that must be tasted to be believed. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2023. (8/8/22)” -Stuart Pigott

Schafer-Frohlich Felsenberg GG Riesling, Nahe 2021 1.5L $259 pre-arrival special, 3 bottles arriving
JamesSuckling.com 97 points “Welcome to the smoke-hole of radically mineral dry riesling! Here is the dark side of the force, in spite of the yellow-grapefruit zest. Very slowly but steadily opens with aeration. So ripe, yet so savagely original, so precise and subtle. The finish is like licking a samurai sword from the hilt to the tip. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2023. (8/8/22)” -Stuart Pigott
Wine Advocate 96-97 points “From porphyry soils, the 2021 Felsenberg GG offers a pure yet intense and elegant, darker toned and flinty bouquet of crushed stones with plummy notes, delicate spices and herbal notes. Full-bodied, pure and fresh on the palate, with fine tannins and ripe and refined acidity, this is a lush and round but finely tannic and aromatic Felsenberg with enormously salinity on the intense and aromatic, crisp and crunchy finish. Tasted as a sample at the domaine in July 2022. Drink: 2022-2050. (Aug 2022)” -Stephan Reinhardt

Wagner-Stempel Heerkretz GG Riesling, Rheinhessen 2022 $99 pre-arrival special, 6 bottles available
James Suckling 99 points “Still very young, but with a combination of great concentration, great tension and great minerality, this incredible dry riesling marries all of this with an astonishing gracefulness.

Wagner-Stempel Hollberg GG Riesling 2022 $79 pre-arrival special, 6 bottles available
James Suckling 98 Points “The first thing that strikes you is the huge stone fruit ripeness in the nose, but then comes the striking exotic fruit and herb freshness, and when you take the first sip the wet stone intensity and vibrancy are truly staggering. Breathtakingly brilliant mineral finish that’s austere in the best possible way. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”

“Casa Castillo’s Las Gravas”

“2020 is an exceptional vintage here, the finest they have ever produced” -Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

In Jumilla, ancient Monastrell vines grow among stony, sparsely-populated hills as though they’ve been neglected since before the Phylloxera outbreak. It seems a land that time and modernity, with all its fickle insistencies, forgot. The results are what might be one of the best sources for unadulterated, rustic flavors in any of the major wine producing countries in Europe. These head trained vines offer up nothing but pure fruit that seems drawn from the core of the plateau and mountains that lift the vineyards above the baking heat of the interior. While there are both low- and high-end representations from this DO, finding quality producers that are making affordable, yet well-crafted and delicious, bottles is difficult. This is where Casa Castillo is hitting the mark.

Originally purchased in 1941, the current owner José Maria Vicente and his father started to revitalize the property and some of their ancient vineyards. The first expansions to the property saw the family experiment with Cabernet Sauvignon (gone now, grafted over to Garnacha) and Syrah (with plant material obtained from JL Chave). But the most important decision was to obtain more high-quality Monastrell. This enabled Casa Castillo to fine tune their style with special blends based upon the different sites and the way the fruit reflected the terroir. These included vineyards with beautiful chalk soils, sites with lovely limestone, and some sites the entirety of which look like a ball pit of sunbaked stones.

The Las Gravas, one of the winery’s old-vine Monastrell bottlings, is both the weightiest bottling yet still comes across as floral and full of life. This is a fun cellar addition as the initial intensity will temper while the softness comes to the fore. Per Luis Gutiérrez of the Wine Advocate, this 2020 may be the best vintage ever produced, showing an unachieved-before ethereal quality that accentuates the inherent minerality and verve from a “classic Mediterranean vintage.” Not only is that reflected in the final score of 98, the highest ever for this wine, but also in his glowing praise:

“Their 2020s represent the finest wines they have produced since they started in 1991. Even the musts showed balance and elegance, and that continued throughout the fermentation and upbringing of the wines that are elegant and fine, with less color and extraction than normal but with great character and depth…”
-Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Casa Castillo Las Gravas, Jumilla 2020 750ml $69 pre-arrival special, only 29 bottles available
Wine Advocate 98 points “The phenomenal 2020 Las Gravas was produced with 92% Monastrell from 30- to 40-year-old vines on north-facing gravel soils (hence its name) complemented with 8% Garnacha. It fermented with 30% full clusters and indigenous yeasts in underground stone lagares and matured in a combination of 500-liter barrel and 5,000-liter foudres for 16 months. It has classical parameters, 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.47 and 4.87 grams of acidity per liter. The wine is super perfumed and floral, really showy, elegant, nuanced and refined, with the notes of pine needles and wet soil much subtler than in the 2019. There is an ethereal character to the 2020s that I haven’t found in any previous vintage here, but at the same time, the wines are very mineral and have lots of energy and light. There is precision, cleanliness, definition and elegance like I hadn’t seen before and refined tannins with a pungent mineral sensation in the textured finish. This is an incredible wine for the price asked. 35,500 bottles produced. There was a single bottling in February 2022.” -Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

“Domaine Bott-Geyl, Alsace”

While Alsace itself has been transferred between France and Germany numerous times over hundreds of years thanks to multiple wars, Domaine Bott-Geyl has been tended by the same family since 1795. With 15 hectares of biodynamically and sustainably farmed vines, current vigneron Jean-Christophe Bott is taking the winery back to its traditions in order to preserve its future.

Bott-Geyl Cremant d’Alsace Paul-Edouard X Brut NV $29 pre-arrival special, 24 bottles available

Bott-Geyl Metiss Alsace Blanc 2021 750ml $19.50 pre-arrival  special, 24 bottles available
Vinous “The 2021 Alsace Métiss is a blend of Muscat, Riesling, Sylvaner, Chasselas and Pinot Blanc, a contemporary take on the Edelzwicker blends of old. It is the only wine in the range that is certified Ecocert rather then Biodyvin, since a small amount of Muscat is bought from a grower for this blend. The nose is scented and fresh, full of spring blossom and lemon. The rounded palate follows suit, presenting fragrant peachiness and lovely, lemony richness – despite the slender body. A light, fragrant, and bone-dry aperitif, ideal for a summer table.”

Bott-Geyl Pinot Gris Sonnenglanz Grand Cru 2013 750ml $45 pre-arrival special, 24 bottles available
Vinous 92+ Points “Vivid straw. Knockout nose is redolent of lemon verbena, ripe pear, grilled peach, nectarine and sweet spices complicated by spicy, lemony noble rot. Tactile, rich and utterly seamless in the mouth, with flavors similar to the aromas. I love this wine’s long, textured finish, which shows a spicy honeyed nuance (thanks to the presence of noble rot) that makes it absolutely irresistible. Since 2011, Bott harvests these grapes early to help preserve acidity.”

Bott-Geyl Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru 2018 750ml $51.90 pre-arrival special, 12 bottles available
Vinous 93 Points “The 2018 Riesling comes from a terraced, steep parcel at the top of Schlossberg Grand Cru, at its center, just below the forest, lending coolness. The granitic soils are weathered and poor, yields are small. The nose announces the ripeness and dryness of 2018 with a lifted scent of orange peel, golden apple and candied orange. The palate, likewise, is ripe and rounded, brimming with juicy, ripe Mirabelle that is edged with dried lemon peel freshness. A phenolic edge lends some welcome bitterness and more texture. The finish is dry and lasting, delving deeper into that stone. (Bone-dry)”

Bott-Geyl Riesling Schoenenbourg Grand Cru 2018 750ml $51.90 pre-arrival special, 12 bottles available
Vinous 94 Points “The 2018 Riesling Schoenenbourg Grand Cru is from various parcels within the grand cru, between 20, 30 and 60 years old. The nose is totally open and lifted with dried yarrow and dried lemon peel. More air brings hints of dried and fresh yellow pear. The palate is focused, intense, linear and edged with utterly mouth-watering freshness. There is a lovely chalky texture while notions of candied orange peel pop up, yet a completely dry focus drives this to a refreshing finish. Again a contrast between nose and palate delivers intense, chalky length. (Bone-dry)”

Castello dei Rampolla’s Sammarco

Arriving Tomorrow

Castello dei Rampolla is one of our go-to estates for big, bold wines from Chianti.  Whether their flagship Chianti Classico or their top-tier “Sammarco,” the wines deliver impressive complexity, depth and power at prices that make them must-have for lovers of Bordeaux, Brunello and everything in between.

Castello dei Rampolla is blessed with some of the best holdings in Panzano’s Conca d’Oro—a warm sub-region of Chianti that allows for naturally powerful wines.  They combine that privileged site with some of the more meticulous biodynamic farming in the region, all in the service of wines with depth, texture and complexity.

The Sammarco is their crown jewel—a Bordeaux-inspired blend that uses a dollop of Sangiovese to bring Cabernet and Merlot to a new level.  The 2017 rivals our recent stock of the 2015 for power and complexity. No need to just take our word for it, just read the reviews:

Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2017 750ml $69 pre-arrival special, only 24 bottles available
James Suckling 98 points “Such beautiful balance and refinement to this legendary red with cherries, chocolate, walnuts, hazelnuts and autumn leaves. It’s medium to full-bodied with wonderful, creamy tannins and a persistent and complete finish. Better than the exquisite 2015? A blend of cabernet sauvignon, sangiovese and merlot. Needs three to four years to show all it has. Definitely one for the cellar.”
Wine Enthusiast 96 points “A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Merlot, this delicious, juicy red offers inviting aromas of new leather, blue flower, ripe black-skinned fruit and grilled herb. On the smooth, savory palate, tightly knit, fine-grained tannins seamlessly support fleshy black cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and tobacco before closing on a mocha note. Drink through 2029.” -Kerin O’Keefe
Vinous 95 points “The 2017 Sammarco is heady, exotic and totally beautiful. It is also not anywhere near ready to show all it’s got. Iron, smoke, red cherry fruit, leather, blood orange and spice are some of the many notes that infuse the 2017 with layers of complexity. Firm, muscular tannins are going to need time to soften. Even so, the 2017 is a rare Sammarco that will require only minimal cellaring, which is why the estate decided to release it ahead of the 2016.” -Antonio Galloni
Wine Advocate 95 points “Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a tiny part Sangiovese, the 2017 Sammarco is lush, generous and soft. This wine captures the spirit of generosity and richness that characterizes this sunny vintage. It reveals softer lines and more pliant contours compared to some of the cooler vintages of the past, and you get a generous down pouring of dark fruit, dried blackberry, cinnamon spice and cured leather or tobacco. The tannins are quite robust, but the wine also shows an immediate and accessible approach that distinguishes this growing season. You might notice that my review for the 2016 vintage is missing. That’s because the 2016 vintage will be released after 2017 when that older wine has benefitted from more cellaring.” -Monica Larner

It shows the fresher style of the vintage yet has good richness in its cassis and black raspberry fruit profile as well as notes of tobacco leaf, violets, and spicy oak. Straight-up gorgeous on the palate, it shines for its purity, has ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. I’m a fan.”

La Jota

Rising dramatically from the surrounding fog, Howell Mountain keeps cooler than the Napa Valley below during the day thanks to its altitude, but also keeps warmer at night because of less exposure to moisture. This provides an ideal climate to develop elegant red varietals and the Mountain’s soil is made up of volcano ash that naturally limits yield in the vineyard and focuses flavor.

Founded on Howell Mountain by a European immigrant in 1898, La Jota was later shuttered by the effects of Prohibition, and revived in 1974 as a forward thinking, yet traditional California winery, exchanging zinfandel vines for mostly Bordeaux varietals and exchanging its rusticated Redwood barriques for French Oak.

Winemaker’s Note “The 2020 W.S. Keyes Chardonnay opens with a complimentary nose of white peach and other orchard fruit, jasmine, and almond. Wine Advocate 93 Points “Still based on Bill Smith’s original block from the 1970s, plus some additional plantings, the 2019 Cabernet Franc Howell Mountain is 100% Cabernet Franc. Medium to full-bodied, silky, fine and elegant, this is a perennial favorite, drinkable on release and for a decade or more afterward.”

Deep garnet-purple colored, it explodes from the glass with bombastic black currants, black cherries and boysenberries notes plus underlying hints of violets, dark chocolate and tobacco leaf. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and fragrant.”
James Suckling 96 points “Aromas of pine needles, asphalt, graphite and black fruit follow through to a full-bodied and chewy palate with so much tannin, giving this real Howell Mountain character. It goes on and one. Muscular and in need of time in the bottle to soften. Better after 2024.”
