Louis Roederer

One of the most esteemed Grand Marques of Champagne, Louis Roederer has become synonymous with quality and sustainability. Converting their estate vineyards to organic and biodynamic farming practices and high-density plantings, which all help lower yields and improve quality, these are meticulously farmed plots that are each vinified separately for precision blending. Favoring Chardonnay, the resulting wines are among the most age-worthy and elegant on the market.

Roederer’s Cristal is one most sought-after bottlings in Champagne—a tête du cuvée that always lives up to the (enthusiastic) hype. Cristal Vinothèque—a late released bottling—represents the absolute pinnacle of what Roederer is capable of.

Louis Roederer Collection 244 Brut NV 750ml $59 special, 33 bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 93+ points
“Based on the 2019 vintage, Roederer’s NV Brut Collection 244 is the finest release of the house’s reimagined non-vintage Brut to date. Offering up aromas of pear, peach and nectarine mingled with notions of white flowers, beeswax, freshly baked bread and buttery pastry, it’s medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with a pretty pinpoint mousse, racy acids and a long, chalky finish. The quality of the base vintage really shines through.”
James Suckling 94 points “The first impression is as invigorating as a sea breeze. I love the interplay of mirabelle, grapefruit and lychee fruit with minty freshness and waxiness from lees contact. And all this is welded to a beautifully proportioned palate with plenty of structure, the acidity bright and the mousse animating. Very salty finish that pulls you back for more. A cuvee of 41% chardonnay, 33% pinot noir and 26% pinot meunier. Of these, 15% fermented in oak and 85% in stainless steel. The final blend contained 36% reserve perpetual and 10% reserve wines of the 2012 – 2018 vintage from oak. The dosage is 7 g/l. Drink or hold.”

Louis Roederer Brut Premier NV 6L $599 special, 1 six-liter bottle available
*****In-store pick up only. Shipping not available.*****
James Suckling 93 points
“This has a core of fresh, extremely fleshy and attractive peaches and lemons from a ripe year. The delicacy and purity of this Champagne is stunning, as is its gently powerful nature. Such great purity here. In great form! Drink now.”
Wine Spectator 92 points “Racy acidity drives this sleek Champagne, swathed in a lovely, creamy mousse as it carries a finely meshed range of poached pear and star fruit, pickled ginger and Meyer lemon zest. Lithe and graceful, with a lasting, mineral-laced finish. Drink now through 2025.”

Louis Roederer Cristal Brut 2002 750ml $599 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 100 points
“Roederer’s 2002 Cristal, from magnum, is just off the charts…….The texture, breadth, and overall pedigree here is just remarkable, with layers of apricot, spice, dried flowers, and citrus conft that continue to build over time. The 2002 is neither old nor young; it is quite simply eternal…..”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98 points “Roederer’s 2002 Cristal is a fabulous wine! Originally released in 2009, it was re-released in March this year—and was sold out in a very short time… the nose of the 2002 Cristal shows a deep, ripe and elegant fruit with aromas of white chocolate, wet chalk, wild vanilla and pepper (typical for 2002) as well as terroir-driven truffle notes. Intense and very elegant in the mouth, this is a ripe, rich and concentrated yet also pure and vital Cristal with great finesse, elegance and mineral complexity. It’s a sublime Champagne right now, although it’s more wine than Champagne.”

Louis Roederer Cristal Brut 2006 750ml $459 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points
“The 2006 Cristal is a rich, explosive wine that captures all of the natural radiance of this warm year. Ample and full-bodied, the 2006 is one of the more extroverted recent Cristals. As such, it will drink well now, even though it has more than enough body to drink well for another 20 years or more. This shows real density and tons of character. It’s a big wine. “In retrospect, we might have preferred a lower dosage, but the wine was quite difficult to balance in blending, so we had to go for a higher dosage,” Lécaillon adds.”

Louis Roederer Cristal Brut 2008 750ml $619 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 99 points
“The 2008 Cristal is just starting to open and into its first plateau of what is likely to be a very long drinking window. Bright and intensely saline, with terrific depth, Cristal shows everything that makes this vintage so appealing, namely a captivating mix of fruit intensity and bright, piercing acids. As alluring as the 2008 is today, it also needs time to be at its very best. Roederer launched the more open 2009 ahead of the 2008, which means the 2008 saw ten years on the lees, quite a bit longer than most vintages, all of which it needed. The 2008 seems to presage a new era at Roederer in which the wines have been consistently brilliant…”

Louis Roederer Cristal Brut 2012 750ml $519 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98 points
“The 2012 Cristal is the first made entirely from biodynamically farmed vineyards. Passionfruit, mango, spice and ginger open first, but it is the wine’s textural richness and volume that stand out most. The 2012 is one of the most opulent, flamboyant recent Cristals. Those qualities feel especially amplified in this tasting, perhaps because of the presence of wines from the surrounding vintages. It was a complicated season, as mildew reduced yields significantly, resulting in an especially rich Cristal that seems to be gaining intensity with time in bottle…”

Louis Roederer Cristal Brut 2014 750ml $349 special, 3 bottles in stock now
#1 Top 100 Cellar Selections 2022 – Wine Enthusiast
Wine Spectator 98 points
“This vivid Champagne shows up-front and linear definition, thanks to rapierlike acidity, with finely meshed flavors of ripe black cherry and mandarin orange fruit, raw almond, anise and cardamom spice as well as a touch of honeycomb, which all unfurl and expand on the fine, creamy palate. Sleek acidity continues through to the finish, with additional racy character provided by a streak of minerally saline and chalk, which gains momentum through the midpalate and rings out on the well-cut, lasting finish…”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98 points “The 2014 Cristal is another in a long line of gorgeous wines from Roederer and long-time Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon. A dazzling, vibrant Champagne, the 2014 impresses with a stunning combination of fruit density and linear energy that brings to mind a hypothetical blend of 2012 and 2008. At times, the bubbles feel totally wrapped up in waves of creamy, resonant fruit to the point the mousse is barely perceptible, especially with aeration. The flavors are bright and finely sculpted, leaning very much into the citrus, floral and mineral end of the spectrum… The 2014 Cristal is a riveting Champagne. Don’t miss it.”
Wine Enthusiast 97 points “Cellar Selection. Still young, with toast aromas and shining white-fruit flavors, the latest release of Cristal is just setting out. A dry, tight core of intense flavors are shot through with minerality from the pure chalk soil of the 45 individual parcels in the blend. Drink this wine from 2025. Organic. -Roger Voss”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 96 points “The 2014 Cristal is a terrific effort that transcends the vintage. Bursting from the glass with expressive aromas of ripe citrus fruit, nectarine, white flowers, freshly baked bread and subtle hints of honeycomb, it’s medium to full-bodied, vinous and fleshy, with an exuberant core of fruit that’s girdled by racy acids, resulting in a wine that’s simultaneously chiseled and demonstrative, meaning that early appeal doesn’t come at the expense of the requisite tension for long-term cellaring. Concluding with a long, aromatic and intensely chalky finish, it is a brilliant Champagne that will offer a broad drinking window…”
Simon Field MW-Decanter 95 points “The rollercoaster growing season of 2014 is reflected to perfection by the innate tension here; ripe citric fruit and even a touch of exoticism (mango and fig) tempered by a fine shard of acidity and a lifted ethereal character, described paradoxically by chef de caves Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon as ‘weightless density’. Purity, energy and power make for very happy bedfellows, courtesy the chalky terroir and its organic husbandry. The texture is silky, the bubbles joyfully integrated and the finish resourceful and precise, its salinity deferential to the deep-digging roots…”

Louis Roederer Cristal Brut 2015 750ml $379 special, 6 bottles in stock now
The Wine Independent 98 points
“The 2015 Cristal is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. No malo-lactic was employed and 25% wine was aged in oak. The dosage is 7 grams per liter. An exquisitely delicate yet complex perfume of clover honey freshly shaved ginger marzipan and jasmine slowly emerges from the nose giving way to a core of pear tart persimmons and apple butter. The palate is an exercise in finesse featuring very fine bubbles and fantastic intensity with a myriad of spice and floral nuances finishing with impressive persistence and jaw-dropping poise. This is a style for those that embrace purity soft-spoken expression and impeccable crafting. It won’t disappoint those who love Champagne in its initial youthful perfume flushes yet will undoubtedly reward the patient with a richer toastier more obvious and opulent style with 5-10 years+ of cellaring.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “I have tasted the 2015 Cristal three times so far – once as part of an extensive vertical I will be reporting on shortly and then later in my office. Those tastings paint a portrait of a complex Champagne that is still finding its center. Tasted at the maison the 2015 is rich dense and explosive with tremendous textural intensity and also a good bit of energy to back it up. Citrus confit spice ginger chalk and dried flowers abound in a Champagne endowed with tremendous aromatic presence in a style that offers notable richness but lighter than vintages such as 2012. There is a bit of the savoriness that is such a signature of the year but it is nicely integrated in the wine’s fabric. Two later tastings in my office strongly suggest the 2015 has already started to shut down a bit which is a shame as it may be hard to read for some time to come…”

Louis Roederer Cristal Brut Rosé 2013 750ml $619 special, 3 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 99 points
“A candidate for wine-of-the-vintage honors in Champagne, Roederer’s 2013 Cristal Rosé is showing brilliantly, unfurling in the glass with notes of crisp orchard fruit, white flowers, red berries, stone fruit, freshly baked bread and tangerine oil. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, the vintage’s bright girdling acids are amply cloaked in exuberant, expressive and notably concentrated fruit; so while this Cristal is as tensile and age-worthy as one would expect, it’s also impressively fleshy and generous given the year. Concluding with an intensely sapid finish, the 2013 isn’t as overtly structured as the muscular, tightly wound 2012: rather, it’s the 2013’s alliance of cut and flesh, precision and charm that’s so compelling this year. This is another banner vintage for what I consider the reigning champion of the region’s tête de cuvée bottlings, and it will be worth an effort to acquire.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98 points “The 2013 Cristal Rosé is searingly intense right out of the glass, just like the Blanc, except it has a bit more fleshiness because of the skin contact on the Pinot. Cristal Rosé has one of the best track records for aging in Champagne. I suspect the 2013 will join the ranks of the epic vintages, but it is painfully tight today…”
Jeb Dunnuck 98 points “If you’re a Champagne lover and this doesn’t do it for you, I don’t know what will. A magical Champagne that’s just about as good as it gets, the 2013 Cristal Rosé reveal a lighter salmon hue to go with a rich yet also subtle nose of orange blossom, white flowers, toasted brioche, and chalky minerality. It takes some coaxing but is incredibly complex aromatically and offers more spice, dried strawberry, and library book-like nuances as it sets in the glass. Richly textured on the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied and has surprising opulence as well as a great mid-palate, all of which are balanced by a vibrant spine of acidity. It starts out seemingly soft and easygoing yet changes with air, and it possesses an incredible mix of suppleness, texture, and precision that is something to behold. It can be drunk today or cellared for 20 or 30 years, possibly even longer.”
Wine & Spirits 98 points “Cristal Rosé appears to be an effortless wine, a pleasure point somewhere between masculine strength and feminine beauty. The delicate rose color and lasting red fruit describe ripe peach, the scent of bee pollen, savory herbs and smoke, but what astonishes about this wine is the kind of power that pheromones have, well past the edges of perception. A blend of Aÿ pinot noir and Avize chardonnay, all mid-slope parcels, all on chalk soils, this is glorious wine to enjoy now, while it holds the inner tension and bold compression of flavors to develop for decades.”

Louis Roederer Cristal Vinothèque Edition Brut 1999 750ml $1,245 special, 3 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 98 points
“The nose has such beautiful, autolysis character with brown-mushroom and toasted-almond aromas. The nose has still-fresh lemons and oyster shell. Very smooth, pastry-like texture on the palate with even layers and a core of fresh lemons and peaches. The striking thing here is the balance and melted-together complexity. In a very great place. This spent seven years sur latte, seven sur pointe and was disgorged in 2014. Drink now.” [Reviewed 2019]
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points “Roederer’s 1999 Cristal Vinothèque is endowed with tremendous power and concentration, especially for a Champagne of its age. Palate staining minerals, chalk, white pepper, mint, citrus and orchard fruit soar out of the glass. Tasted next to the Rosé the Blanc has a slightly more toasty character along with more body and a stronger presence of the mousse, which in this wine wraps around the fruit. At the time, Cristal was made from 37 parcels. The Pinots were a blend from Aÿ (where the wines are naturally riper) and Verzenay, Verzy and Beaumont-sur-Vesle, (where Pinots are nervy and taut), while the Chardonnay was sourced from Avize, Mesnil and Cramant. Dosage is 7-8 grams per liter.” [Reviewed 2020]

De Venoge

De Venoge is an old-school Champagne House that’s relatively unknown in the United States due to their immense popularity in Europe. This means that even their finest and rarest wines continue to be undervalued relative to their peers on our shores.

De Venoge was established in Champagne in the first part of the 19th century by Swiss born Henri-Marc de Venoge and his son Joseph. Today the House has a strong following in Europe for good reason—they source from some of the best vineyards in Champagne and produce prestige cuvées of immense quality, built on long lees aging.

This is no better exemplified than their prestige cuvee, the Louis XV. Named after Louis the 15th, who first authorized the bottling of Champagne, the fruit for this bottling is sourced exclusively from Grand Cru villages such as Verzenay, Bouzy, Avize, and Le Mesnil. The wine sees extensive aging on its lees and is a true monument of vintage Champagne.

The resulting wines capture the essence of classical Champagne and are in high demand in Europe’s top restaurants. They are outstanding wine sfor lovers of truly mature Champagne in all its glory, offering a rich, creamy texture from the extended lees aging married to surprisingly fresh, mineral personalities.

De Venoge ‘Cordon Bleu’ Brut 2002 750ml $79 special, 7 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 93 points
“A core of mineral-accented smoke, spice and honey notes is wrapped with flavors of glazed apricot, lemon preserves and candied ginger in this vibrant and well-balanced version. Creamy, with a lasting finish. Drink now through 2025. 3,000 cases made. — AN”

De Venoge Louis XV Brut 2006 750ml $189 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 96 points
“…the 2006 has a golden color and opens with a deep, ripe, elegant and vinous bouquet with toasty and chalky lemon and fresh white fruit flavors. On the palate, this is an intense, round, fresh and complex Louis XV with great purity and finesse. The wine opens on the palate like a soufflé, coating the whole palate without any pressure or weight—gorgeous! This is a delicate and fresh yet well-structured and persistent Louis XV whose intense and long but weightless finish reveals lovely, almost juicy fruit concentration with perfectly integrated freshness and lasting minerality that seems to give additional structure. The 2006 shows a lot of Chardonnay features right now and drinks perfectly today; however, it can be kept under perfect conditions for decades…”

De Venoge Louis XV Brut 2008 750ml $249 special, 33 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 95 points
“This is really punchy and broad-shouldered with muscular structure and citrusy undertones. Full body. Lightly tannic and a fresh and vivid finish. This is the first vintage without malolactic fermentation ever. One for the cellar. Better in 2022.”
Wine Advocate 93+ points “…the 2008 displays a clear, pure, fresh, chalky-tinged and vinous nose with lemon, white fruits, brioche, hazelnuts, white blossoms and some caramel notes. Pure, lean, fresh and elegant on the palate, with a lingering hazelnut flavor, this is a straight yet complex cuvée with grip and a long, well-structured and textured finish. This 2008 is still terribly fresh and should benefit from further bottle aging. For the moment, I am missing the mouth-filling generosity of the 2006 and 1995. Mind that this is the first vintage of de Venoge’s prestigious Louis XV where the base wines didn’t undergo malolactic fermentation!”

De Venoge Louis XV Extra Brut Rosé 2002 750ml $189 special, 21 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 93 points
“Harmonious, with fine intensity, offering rich notes of spice cake, toasted almond, dried cherry, grilled plum and smoky mineral. Almost velvety in texture, with juicy acidity that brings you back for another sip. Delicious. Drink now through 2022. 54 cases made.”

Pommery

You’ve heard of the Champagne widow and pioneer Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin (also known as Madame Clicquot), but have you heard of Louise Pommery? While you can be forgiven for not knowing her, Champagne as we know it would not exist without her contributions. In the 1870’s Champagne was one of the sweetest wines of the world for a number of reasons. The first and foremost was to balance out the otherwise searing acidity that was seen in Champagnes of the period. The second was to cater to commercial preferences of the era, particularly from the Russian royal family and their contemporaries who loved exceptionally sweet wines.

This all changed when Madame Louise Pommery commissioned her cellar master to make a Champagne with as little added sugar as possible, creating the category we now know to be “Brut”. The debut vintage was an overnight success in England, which had developed a preference for drier styles of wine. The Brut style redefined Champagne and is now the typical style by far.

The top Champagne from Pommery is named after Madame Louise. In honor of her legacy, it has the barest amount of sugar added. Comprised of three Grand Cru vineyard sources in Avize, Cramant, and Aÿ, it is aged for eleven years on its lees before disgorgement. The blend itself is predominantly Chardonnay with Pinot Noir. The Grand Cru sources for the fruit are clearly evident in the concentrated flavors, strong mineral character and high acidity. This is Champagne built for the long haul.

We also carry a number of magnums, back vintages and the elusive Rosé bottling from the mineral and joyful 2004 vintage, in its prime drinking window now!

Andre Clouet Un jour de 1911… Brut NV 750ml $85 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“[Reviewed 2021] The NV Un jour de 1911… is another 100% Bouzy Pinot Noir with an ancient label design. The shining golden-colored cuvée combines ripeness, complexity and finesse with intensity and elegance on both the nose and palate. It’s a powerful and rich yet very fine and balanced Champagne with great freshness and complex length. It is juicy and intense but also highly delicate, and its mineral tension and persistent finish make it a first-class wine for elaborate dishes. A great Champagne, with a label that doesn’t give any more detailed information regarding vintages or disgorgement date, but we know it’s always a 50/50 blend of three vintages (including one great millésime at least 10 years old) and reserve wines from a solera system. I tasted the wine as a Brut with Clouet’s German importer in Bremen. You shouldn’t drink it too early, as it would be a waste of its talents.”

The “Dream Vintage” Champagnes from Andre Clouet celebrate exceptional vintages. The Champagnes are 100% Chardonnay, a true Blanc de Blancs, with grapes sourced from Grand Cru sites. The wines themselves are captivating and extraordinarily delicious, each individually expressing the nuances of their great terroir. These are held on the lees until release and disgorged to order, so the older the vintage, the more lees-influenced the wines.

Newly Arrived!
Krug Grande Cuvée 171eme Edition Brut NV 750ml $279 special, 6 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 99 points
“The tightness and tension of this is impressive considering the youngest wine from this is 2015 (hot and dry year), with some wines going back to 2000. Ginger and orange zest. Some creme brulee. It’s medium-bodied with apple, pie crust and floral character. It’s salty and zesty yet, at the same time, complex and gorgeous. Chamomile and other floral teas highlight everything. Turns rich and flavorful at the finish. Terrific release. Really takes off at the end. Drink or hold.’
Wine Spectator 96 points “A vivid Champagne, with chiseled acidity and a fine, vivacious mousse creating a buoyant frame for layered flavors of crushed black raspberry, grilled nuts, pink grapefruit sorbet and coffee liqueur, plus fragrant accents of ground ginger and anise, graphite and lime blossoms. Long and expressive on the finish, crackling with a lingering fleur de sel note.”

Newly Arrived!
Dom Perignon Brut 2013 750ml $289 special, 3 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 98 points
“A driven and serious DP with aromas of chalk, biscuits, apricot stones and lemons. Some spice and dried flowers, too. So sleek and sophisticated. Elegant. Yet, it’s long and powerful, with a sharp minerality. Tight and precise. Reminds me of bottles from the 1980s, such as 1988. It really takes off…”
Wine Spectator 96 points “Vivid acidity and a chalky underpinning make a crystalline frame for finely detailed notes of ripe melon, mandarin orange, toasted brioche and candied ginger in this harmonious Champagne, which is expressive and expansive on the palate, but with a sense of finesse and restraint. Long and creamy on the mineral-laced finish. Drink now through 2037.”
Jasper Morris-Inside Burgundy 96 points “Yet another scintillating wine from Dom Perignon. A youthful but complex bouquet: flowery notes of acacia honey emerge from a base of yellow plum. On the palate, the attack is dry and intense; succulent yellow fruit drenched in walnut oil builds on the mid palate. Superb balance! Long, zesty acidity returns to the finish refreshing the palate. Already very approachable with its generous fruit and sapid mouthfeel. This champagne will most certainly improve over the next decade! Superb! Drink from 2025-2036. Tasted: January 2023.”
Decanter 96 points “Silky, narrowly sculpted and serene, Dom Pérignon 2013 is a less hedonistic release than the 2012 (and less intensely energetic than the 2008), but showcases a beautiful mid-place between tension and expressiveness already. Orange-coloured fruit – apricots, mango and orange – play along with snappy lemon syrup and delicate red fruits, the palate teased into considerable detail and length with some trademark Dom Pérignon smokiness. There is immediate pleasure here, although cellaring will let some of the inner complexity unfurl, revealing this to the among the finest Dom Pérignon releases of recent times…”

Pol Roger Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2015 750ml $349 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points
“The 2015 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill shows off the savory side of the vintage to great effect. Hints of dried pear, sage, mint, dried flowers, lemon oil and chamomile open gradually in this mid-weight, lithe edition of Pol Roger’s tête de cuvée. The 2015 unfolds nicely with time in the glass, but I wouldn’t think of opening a bottle anytime soon. Readers will find a nervy Winston Churchill marked by notable freshness and vigor more than size. This is a fine effort in a vintage that has proven to be far trickier than most observers originally envisioned… “
Wine Advocate 94+ points “A strong effort in a less-acclaimed vintage, Pol Roger’s newly released 2015 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill opens in the glass with aromas of confit citrus, ripe orchard fruits and dried white flowers mingled with hints of honeycomb, freshly baked bread and anise. Medium to full-bodied, vinous and concentrated, with bright acids, chalky structuring extract and a pinpoint mousse, this inherently rather rich, gastronomic Champagne is quite tightly wound out of the gates and will reward a bit of bottle age. Stylistically, it is somewhat reminiscent of a modern-day version of the 1985.”

Laurent-Perrier Grand Siecle Alexandra Rosé Brut 1990 750ml $599 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points
“Beautifully done. Vigorous and almost chewy, this intense, full-bodied rosé exudes mint, berry and wood aromas and flavors. Muscular and dense, with a character that engages the palate and needs contemplation or food.”
Wine Enthusiast 94 points “It’s a pale wine, on the rose side of gold, a beautiful visual introduction to a stunning wine. The strawberry flavors are wrapped in a silvery texture, crisply dry, and despite the intensity of fruit, the wine seems weightless on the palate. It’s gorgeous now, but, amazingly, just a baby. Its long-term future is assured. Twenty years from now, this will be heavenly.”

Drappier Carte d’Or Brut NV 750ml $39 special, 25 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 91 points
“Drappier’s new NV Brut Carte d’Or delivers attractive aromas of golden orchard fruit, stone fruit, honeycomb and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, it’s charming and elegantly vinous, with a flavorful core of fruit, lively acids and a chalky finish.”
Wine Spectator 90 points “Racy acidity enlivens this crisp and lacy Champagne. Well-knit, with the delicate mix of ripe white cherry, blanched almond, yellow plum and grated ginger flavors. Drink now. 3,000 cases imported.”

Wine Spectator 93 points “[Reviewed 2023] Finely balanced and fresh, with the delicate bead carrying appealing ripe black cherry and green apple fruit, plus a fragrant mix of lime blossom, saffron, toasted almond and ground coffee details. Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Drink now.”

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin La Grande Dame Brut Yayoi Kusama Edition 2012 750ml $189 special, 8 bottles in stock now
Wine Enthusiast 96 points
“#3 WOTY 2020. With a slight preponderance of Pinot Noir in the blend, this wine is rich and impressive. It is still young, with a crisp edge that makes the fruit shine. Apple and citrus flavors are integrated into a mineral vein. Drink from 2022. -Roger Voss”
Decanter 96 points “A generous golden colour betrays the dominance of Pinot Noir in the blend; this theme thereafter maintained by aromatics of fig, wild strawberries and Mirabelle plums; behind that, jasmine, red apples and a distant whiff of woodsmoke. Engaging already, in other words… I have every confidence that this characteristic will come into its own over the longer term and mark the 2012 as one of the more successful outings for this outstanding cuvée. Drinking Window 2020 – 2036.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “Fine and graceful, this dances across the palate with its bright, well-defined freshness and detailed flavors of Mandarin orange, toast point, crème de cassis and minerally oyster shell. Subtle in its intensity, with all the pieces seamlessly knit into an elegant whole. Disgorged September 2019. Drink now through 2030. — AN”

Taittinger Brut Millesime 2015 750ml $99 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 93 points
“The 2015 Champagne Millésime Brut is equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The nose is fragrant with ripe peach and rose petal, and it has a rich texture, with a more viscous feel, and note of yellow flowers and Anjou pear. It speaks to the ripeness of the vintage, but it is long on the palate and has a light phenolic finish. I think this is ready to drink now.”
Wine Spectator 93 points “Vibrant and harmonious, with a pleasing range of ripe pear and nectarine, toast point and salted almond, candied lemon peel and spun honey riding the finely detailed bead. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Drink now through 2030. 500 cases imported.”

“The Opus One 2017 offers a harmonious aromatic balance of rich dark fruit, stems of roses, and earthy forest floor. The juicy entry offers a round, silky mouthfeel with just enough acidity to complement the satin texture. This seductive wine shows flavors of black cassis, black cherry and a hint of cocoa powder. The fine-grained, plush tannins evolve into a long, supple finish.  A supremely age-worthy wine, it will delight now and for many years to come.” -Opus One Winery Notes

Unlike 1976’s famous Judgement of Paris, this wine is a celebration of transatlantic winemaking collaboration rather than competition. When two of the world’s most famous winemakers, Bordeaux’s Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Napa’s Robert Mondavi, joined forces to create a unique masterpiece in 1979.

This is one of the wines that put Napa (American wines as a whole) on the map.

Opus One Proprietary Red, Napa Valley 2017 750ml $359 special, 3 bottles available
Decanter 96 Points ” A fist of late summer cherries, raspberry and bilberry fruits set out their stall, all with the juicy character that confirms, even in a hot vintage like 2017, Opus can deliver balance and sculpted elegance. Beautiful grip, creamy texture with a strikingly powerful tannic frame. As the wine stays in the glass the floral aromatics begin to bloom up. A brilliant Opus. 20 days maceration – around half what it would have been a decade ago. 54% native yeast, as part of their native yeast project. 5% Merlot and 1% Malbec complete the blend. Harvest spread out over September 5 to October 8, just before the fires, by which time they had less than 10% of the fruit still out on the vines.”
Wine Advocate 95 Points “Opus One had picked 91% of their fruit before the fires started in 2017, and only two lots were eliminated from consideration. The 2017 Opus One, bottled in July 2019, is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4.5% Merlot and 1% Malbec. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it slowly grows on the nose, revealing compelling notes of baked black cherries, mulberries, black raspberries, warm cassis and blackberry pie with nuances of spice cake, yeast extract, tapenade, licorice and dusty soil with a waft of wild sage. Medium-bodied, the palate has a lively skip in its step, featuring bags of juicy raspberry and cassis-laced fruit and a refreshing line, supported by ripe, plush tannins, finishing long and graceful.”

CHAMPAGNE

Andre Clouet

Founded in 1741, the Champagne House of Andre Clouet has been making some of the most recognizable Champagnes in the village of Bouzy for centuries. Felsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2019 750ml $34.50 special, 22 bottles available
James Suckling 94 Points “This has a perfumed nose of wild cherries, strawberries, sandalwood, peppercorns, cloves, rosemary and truffles. Elegant and refined, with firm, fine tannins. Long and deliciously wild, with savory spice notes.”
Jeb Dunnuck 93 Points “Aromatically more intense, the 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardenga is concentrated with candied raspberry, licorice, and menthol. This is true to the palate as well, with a core of cherry fruit, blood orange, and a lasting floral finish. It has a ripe and sunny feel, fine tannin structure, and a cleansing freshness of acidity. Although it is open and generous in its showing now, this will be worth holding onto for the next 8-10 years.”

Kellerei Kurtatsch Pinot Grigio, Trentino-Alto Adige 2022 750ml $16 special, 36+ bottles available
Winery Notes “The large temperature differences between day and night in these vineyards is the magic that lends the wine its distinctive aroma of white peaches, fresh flowers and citrus fruits. In the mouth, the wine is juicy and round. The creamy texture is complemented by fresh, animating acidity. This is mainly thanks to the higher-elevation Pinot grigio vines. An expressive wine with a mineral, salty finish.”

GD Vajra Barbera d’Alba Superiore 2021 750ml
$29 special, 36+ bottles available
Vinous 93+ Points “Just bottled, the 2021 Barbera d’Alba Superiore is fabulous. Rich and inky, with tremendous depth, the 2021 is so vibrant in the glass. Red/purplish fruit, lavender, sweet spice and mocha are all dialed up, with a kiss of French oak that adds raciness.”
Wine Advocate 93 Points “I’m told that this is probably the last vintage in which the 2021 Barbera d’Alba Superiore Viola delle Viole will carry the name Viola delle Viole. In yet another unfortunate nod to climate change, Barbera vines suffer from the floral disease Flavescence dorée that causes the plants to shut down and the fruit to remain unripened. Barbera, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are the most hard-hit by the sickness. Freisa and Nebbiolo are resistant, and those varieties are planted around the rims of vineyards today as a protective barrier. As a result, Barbera vines in Bricco delle Viole (one of two sites present in this blend, the other being Bricco Bertone outside the Barolo area) were taken out. Barbera tends to produce wines with high alcohol, but the Vajra team prefers to reach optimal fruit maturity and is less concerned about alcohol. The grape always has high acidity, but that is “a problem that is going away on its own,” says Isidoro Vaira. Bricco delle Viole gives the wine its floral aromas and Bricco Bertone adds a sweet almond-like flavor. There is a seven- to eight-day harvest difference between the two sites. This wine ages in large oak casks for 16 months.”

“The Garden of France”

Wines of The Loire Valley

The Loire just never gets enough love.

Known as the “garden of France” for the enormous volume of agriculture produced in this region, the Loire was an early adopter of organic and biodynamic viticulture, not because it was trendy, but because it was reflective of the natural farming techniques practiced in the region for centuries.

The Loire’s wines are known for their elegance and versatility, making them a dream come true for food pairing and dinner parties. This week, we’re taking a trip through the wine producing regions of the Loire, starting at the mouth of the Loire river and floating our way east.

MUSCADET

Bottled “sur-lee,” (on the lees) great oyster and seafood wines!

Domaine de la Pepiere

Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine Clisson Cru, Loire 2020 750ml $28 special, 24 bottles available
Importer’s Note “The Clisson bottling comes from a 50-100-year-old section vines in Pepière’s core vineyard near the winery in the cru of Clisson. Besides vine age, the distinguishing factor is the granite de Clisson, a very hard, compact form of granite. The very poor top soils are decomposed granite de Clisson with very little clay and a lot of quartz and mica over hard mother rock of granite de Clisson. The farming is certified-biodynamic. The hand-harvested bunches are direct-pressed and the juice settled naturally overnight. It is then fermented spontaneously with natural yeasts and aged on its lees for a minimum of 2 years in underground vats. The wine is bottled without fining or filtering.”

Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine Clisson Cru, Loire 2017 1.5L $61.90 special, 5 bottles available
Rebecca Gibb MW-Vinous 93 Points “The 2017 Clisson from this organic estate has been wild fermented and has spent two years in cuve on lees (the minimum for this cru). While ripe and rounded, which is a character of the Clisson cru, and redolent of lees-derived character, this retains a lovely precision and vivacity. Appealing clarity of apple and citrus fruit and light in body. This is a fresher, more defined style of Clisson from a cooler season. It’s pure, clean and provides definition.”

Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine Monnieres-St-Fiacre, Loire 2017 1.5L $59 special, 3 bottles available
Rebecca Gibb MW-Vinous 93 Points “The 2017 Monnières Saint-Fiacre offers ripe nectarine, apple and citrus alongside lees-derived nutty characters, having spent three years on lees. The clarity of the wine is excellent, perhaps something to do with the hand harvesting and whole bunch pressing, which puts them in the minority. It’s light in body and elegant with fine sinew on the finish. Drawing this out on the long finish, it bursts with freshness and reflects the cool vintage.”

SAVENNIERES

A hub of organic and biodynamic viticulture. These Chenin Blanc wines are dry, high-toned and extremely long lived.

Thibaud Boudignon

“Thibaud Boudignon is unquestionably one of the most exciting figures in wine today. Originally from Bordeaux, he honed his winemaking craft while working at Philipe Charlopin in Gevrey-Chambertin during the early 2000s…It is wines like these that make us remember why we love this business. Just when you think you’ve had the best a region has to offer, a new discovery comes along to rock your world. Boudignon is such a discovery, with wines that speak so clearly of their place of origin. It is in this writer’s humble opinion, that there is no greater dry Chenin Blanc being made in the world today. Period.” -Skurnik Wines

Thibaud Boudignon Savennieres Clos de la Hutte, Loire 2020 750ml $99 special, 10 bottles available
Thibaud Boudignon Savennieres Clos de la Hutte, Loire 2020 1.5L $219 special, 1 magnum available
Vinous 96 points “Outer quote mark Move over Luther Vandross, Thibaud Boudignon is in town and the Clos de la Hutte makes you want to slow dance with it. The 2020 is a wine that makes your shoulders drop such is its tranquility and sense of comfort in your mouth. It blooms in the mouth and does so without any sense of heaviness. The finish, scented with flowers and nectarines, is long, fragrant and textural. I hate using the word minerality as it means so many different things to people, but in my opinion, this has it in spades. It is incredible that the vines were only planted in 2011 on the schistous site on the grounds of a former monastery. Aged in larger format barrels, there’s no sense of oakiness, allowing the purity of this wine to shine bright.”

Thibaud Boudignon Savennieres Clos de Fremine, Loire 2021 1.5L $179 special, 3 bottles available
Vinous 92 Points “The 2021 Clos de Frémine has a fragrant, lightly tropical nose of almost banana and just-ripe pineapple notes. While delicate on the mid-palate, it packs a punch on the finish with the combination of racy acidity and mineral streak. The long, aromatic finish is pastry-like with a firm line. 11.5% alcohol.”

Joly Vignobles de la Coulee de Serrant

Joly Vignobles de la Coulee de Serrant ‘Clos de la Coulee de Serrant’, Loire 2019 750ml $135 special, 18 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98 Points “Produced from seven hectares of vineyards aged from 40 to 50 years old, Joly’s 2019 Clos de la Coulée de Serrant opens with a clear, bright yet enormously dense and complex bouquet of crushed stones, herbs and fine but dense and multilayered fruit that needs air to open up, yet it shows its class immediately. On the palate, this is a rich and intense, full-bodied, tight and concentrated yet elegant and stimulating salty Chenin with firm tannins intertwined with a crystalline acidity that carries this highly complex icon wine to a long and compact yet elegant finish. There is a remarkable purity, freshness and energy in the aftertaste that you sometimes might have missed in former vintages.”

Joly Vignobles de la Coulee de Serrant Savennieres Les Vieux Clos, Loire 2019 750ml $69 special, 9 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 95+ Points “Joly’s 2019 Les Vieux Clos displays a straw-yellow color and opens with a deep, clear, elegant, concentrated and very complex bouquet of ripe yellow-fleshed fruits (mirabelles, persimmons, passion fruit), quinces and pears intertwined with schist and iodine notes of crushed stones and quartz as well as floral aromas. The exciting impression of the nose is proceeded on the palate, where this full-bodied and fiery Savennières has a seamless texture and a crystalline as well as elegant structure with ripe and concentrated fruit and lingering crystalline and salty acidity. The wine has fine and textural tannins and develops a very intense and complex finish. This is a giant in the making, and using a big glass (like Zalto’s Bordeaux) is imperative.”

SAUMUR AND CHINON

The Chaulky soils of Saumur produce lithe, delicate cabernet franc, versus the fuller style of Chinon. The reds of this region are excellent for dishes like roasted chickens or grilled red meats.

Domaine des Closiers

“This kind of winemaking isn’t taught in school … Cabernet Franc with this expression – so dynamic, bursting with aromatics, and in the mouth, it’s explosive … I haven’t had a Saumur-Champigny like this in 10 years.”– Michel Bettane & Thierry Desseauve, as reported by Rare Wine Co.

Domaine des Closiers Saumur-Champigny ‘Les Closiers’, Loire 2021 750ml $36 special, 20 bottles available
John Gilman 93 Points “The 2021 Saumur-Champigny “les Closiers” from Domaine des Closiers is the winery’s basic level bottling, seeing no oak aging and being raised for six to eight months in stainless steel tank. Nevertheless, the bouquet of the 2021 is stunning, soaring from the glass in a black fruity blaze of dark berries, cassis, tree bark, cigar ash, dark soil tones and a distinctly smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is pure, fullbodied, focused and complex, with a beautiful core of black fruit, fine soil signature and grip, ripe, suave tannins and a long, vibrant and impeccably balanced finish. This is a stunning value! 2023-2050+.”

Domaine des Closiers Saumur-Champigny ‘Les Coudraies’, Loire 2020 750ml $44.50 special, 11 bottles available
John Gilman 95 Points “The Saumur-Champigny “les Coudraies” is one of the estate’s single vineyard wines, made from a selection of the best parcels in this hillside vineyard. The wine is aged in mostly older casks for one year prior to bottling. The 2020 les Coudraies comes in at fourteen percent octane and offers up a simply gorgeous bouquet of red and black cherries, cigar wrapper, a touch of tree bark, a complex base of soil tones, juniper berry, a touch of cedar and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very elegant in profile, with a rock solid core of fruit, firm, buried tannins, excellent focus and grip and a long, complex and very, very promising finish. This is a great bottle of Saumur-Champigny in the making!”

Domaine des Closiers Saumur-Champigny Trezellieres, Loire 2019 750ml $108.50 special, 3 bottles available
John Gilman 96 Points “This is my first taste of Domaine des Closiers top bottling, les Trezellières, which is made from a parcel of old vines and given fully two years aging in barrel, with somewhere between ten and twenty percent of the casks new. The 2019 les Trezellières is beautifully deep and refined aromatically, delivering scents ofblack cherries, cassis, Cuban cigar wrapper, a very complex base of soil, a touch of Cheval Blanc-like menthol, a gentle dollop of tree bark, cedar and a top note of cigar smoke. On the palate the wine is pure,full-bodied, elegant and rock solid at the core, with great focus and complex, superb soil undertow, fine-grained tannins and a very long, pure and classy finish. The small percentage of new oak gives this wine more refinement than the les Coudraies bottling, but because it is no more than twenty percent new oak. The wood influence is far more subtle out of the blocks than in Clos Rougeard’s Le Bourg bottling, which is the closest comparison I can think of for this brilliant young Saumur-Champigny. Give this beautiful wine plenty of time in the cellar to properly resolve its tannins and completely blossom! 2031-2085”

VOUVRAY

Wines of elegance, ranging dry to very sweet great with dessert or cheese.

Domaine Huet

Burrowed in the deep chalky hillsides of the Loire rests a wine of impressive immortality and beguiling flavor. In caves hollowed out of the tuffeau rock for the development of the valley’s grandest Chateaux, chenin blanc slumbers, develops, and evolves into one of the most compelling and unique white wines in the world. We’re speaking of course about the wines of Vouvray, one of France’s very first designated appellations following the founding of the INAO in 1936, and a region whose wine history traces back to the middle ages. This region’s most iconic and classic producer is undoubtedly Domaine Huet.

Domaine Huet Vouvray ‘Clos du Bourg’ Demi-Sec, Loire 2016 750 $39 special, 17 bottles in stock
Wine Spectator 95 points “Gorgeous, with creamy-edged nectarine, yellow and green apple, pear and quince flavors that are brightly defined from start to finish, flecked with verbena and honeysuckle hints and backed by a off-dry edge on the finish. Stays fresh and pure throughout. Tempting now but there’s no rush. Drink now through 2032.”

Domaine Huet Vouvray ‘Clos du Bourg’ Demi-Sec, Loire 2020 750ml $44 special, 36+ bottles in stock
Rebecca Gibbs MW-Vinous 97 Points “Drinking the 2020 Clos du Bourg Demi-Sec is like taking your shoes off at the end of a long day of walking and soaking them in warm water: there’s just satisfaction and relaxation. The 2020 has a sense of volume but not weight, filling the mouth with depths of pure fruit before the acid pours forth like a canal lock being opened. You can expect a hint of spice and crème caramel alongside apple and florals. I am utterly seduced.”

Domaine Huet Vouvray ‘Clos du Bourg’ Premiere Trie Moelleux, Loire 2016 750ml $59 special, 36+ bottles in stock
Wine Spectator 96 points “This is ripe and broad, taking a slightly more power-driven approach, with a mix of tropical mango and papaya fruit, backed by orchard fruit accents of yellow apple and peach. The long, heather honey–accented finish has light piecrust and crystalized ginger hints. Best from 2020 through 2035.”

Domaine Huet Vouvray ‘Le Mont’ Moelleux, Loire 2016 750ml $49 special, 36+ bottles in stock
Wine Spectator 96 points “Bright, even exuberant in feel, with a parade of Jonagold apple, green melon, Bosc pear and quince flavors streaming through, gilded with heather, honeysuckle and verbena notes on the long, lithe finish. Remarkably elegant despite the off-dry style. Drink now through 2035.”

SANCERRE

Vivacious wines great with cheese and seafood. Chaulky soils produce excellent minerality in these exquisite wines.

Gerard Boulay

“Given the crystalline purity of his Sauvignon Blancs, he has become one of my favorite producers of the central Loire. If you want to know what true Sancerre tastes like, try one of his single-vineyard bottlings. It does not come any better!” –Joel Payne, Vinous

The Boulay family has farmed their famous and unique parcels of land in Chavignol since 1380 and it is their deep understanding of this land that lends their production such gravity and legitimacy. Chavignol, located in the Village of Sancerre, is famous for their “Terre Blanche” the same Kimmeridgian soils that run through Champagne and Chablis. It is these soils that give  boulay’s famed crus: Monts Damnés, La Grande Côte, and Clos de Beaujeutheir character. As a result, these wines are electric and high-minded like Chablis, with the earthiness and vivacity of the Loire. Everything in the vineyards is done in the family’s traditional style, including organic farming, hand harvesting, and partial aging in neutral oak barrels, which prolongs the longevity of the wines for decades.

Gerard Boulay Sancerre Clos de Beaujeu, Loire 2021 1.5L $119 special, 6 bottles available
Wine Notes “The Clos de Beaujeu is among the most historic sites in the village of Chavignol. In the 14th century the Clos de Beaujeu supplied the Cathedral of Bourges with white wine. At that time, Sancerre was famous for its red wines. Boulay’s Clos de Beaujeu is a richer, denser step up from the Chavignol village wine.”

Gerard Boulay Sancerre Comtesse 2020 750ml $69 special, 5 bottles available
Wine Notes “The most powerful and complex wine from Boulay’s lineup, with an incredible intensity of fruit and a strong mineral core. Definitely one to put away and follow for years to come…”

Gerard Boulay Sancerre Rouge Oriane 2020 750ml $49 special, 17 bottles available
Wine Notes “Although pinot noir based roses from the Loire have built up a lot of cache in the past few years, the Sancerre region used to be renowned for red wines. The cherry and raspberry perfumed nose of this wine is lifted by ample acidity and minerality for a truly elegant expression of Sancerre rouge.”

Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Asili, Piedmont 2019 750ml WAS $289 NOW $219 special, only 6 bottles left!
James Suckling 98 Points “Sweet and succulent aromas of tangerines, freshly cut ripe strawberries, cherries and flowers follow through to a full-bodied palate with sleek and dense tannins that run the length of the wine and then fan out into a dense, vivid finish of fruit. It’s chewy and seriously structured with finesse and energy. Silky texture. This needs at least four or five years to come together and open. Try after 2027.”

Dal Forno Romano Amarone 2011 750ml WAS $369 NOW $299, 3 bottles available
Decanter 99 Points “The strongest wine in my selection, yet this magnificent Amarone’s alcohol is barely visible thanks to its astonishing depth, texture and sumptuousness. Pressed black fruits seep with fruit essences; smoke and cinders; herbal complexities; teasing floral notes, all engraved into a palate that expresses creamy finesse but without a trace of superfluous fat, heat or obviousness. Beautifully crafted, as dignified as any grand Barolo.”

Guy Charlemagne Brut Millesime Grand Cru 2014 750ml WAS $119  NOW $99 special, 28 bottles available
Winery Note “A Grand Champagne with character from the Côte des Blancs terroir, specifically from Le Mesnil sur Oger (limestone parcels averaging 60 years of age). This champagne produced from first press of Le Mesnil sur Oger Grand Cru juices, highlights the exact characteristic of our village. Jewel of the Charlemagne house, this vintage wine combines both authenticity and the search for perfect quality.”

Ulysses Vineyard Cabernet Oakville Napa 2018 750ml WAS $169 NOW $145 special, 13 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 99 Points “Just about pure perfection and the finest wine I’ve tasted from this address, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon yet includes smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all from a site just north of Dominus. This deep, inky hued beauty offers up a beautiful, full-bodied, richly textured, and incredibly concentrated style that carries ample black and blue fruit as well as notes of crushed stone, scorched earth, graphite, and lead pencil. It has the focused, structured style of the 2018 vintage and is going to benefit from 4-6 years (if not a decade) of bottle age and will be a 30+ year wine.”
James Suckling 98 Points “Aromas of terra cotta, chocolate and hazelnut with iron and ink. Dusty. Full-bodied and round. Layered. Flamboyant and juicy. Rather soft and gorgeous. Some walnut and chocolate at the end. Persistent. Always there. Drinkable now, but will age wonderfully.”

Wine Spectator 94 Points “A very inviting, open style, with butterscotch and caramel notes framing the core of glazed pear, caramelized peach, golden raisin and warm fig flavors. Kopke 40 Years Old Tawny Port, Portugal 750ml $199 special, 6 bottles available
Wine Spectator 95 Points “This offers a dreamy mix of caramelized pear, fig and peach flavors at the core, while caramel, sesame oil and date notes fill in through the expansive finish. At first glance this is quite lush, but the finish lingers with cut and drive. Drink now. 200 cases imported.”

Kopke Colheita Port, Portugal 1966 750ml $249 special, 6 bottles available
Wine Advocate 96 Points “The 1966 Colheita Tawny Port was bottled in 2015 with 126.3 grams per liter of residual sugar, and comes with a bar top cork (as is typical here). As we start getting seriously old in the lineup from Sogevinus this issue, this shows what you get with increasing age: the superb concentration of flavor, the long, intense finishes and the complex medley of flavors that old Tawnies deliver effortlessly. That, to me, is what makes them worth the extra bucks. If some of the youngsters lean more to caramel, this adds more molasses with a touch of Brandy in the background. The concentrated flavors linger more or less endlessly, driven into the palate by the wine’s power and acidity. You can smell and taste this for a long time. The graceful mid-palate is deceptively friendly at first. It sure does grip the palate at the end, though, finishing with juicy bursts of fruit and sugar. Over several days, it acquired a bit more harmony and shed a touch of aggression. The alcohol, speaking relatively, is not as well integrated here as with the 1965, also reviewed, but that is relative. I tended to like this just slightly better anyway for its complexity and concentration on several fronts. The freshness on the 1965 is quite enticing, though. It tastes younger. It depends on what you want: that old-wine complexity and depth or a livelier feel. They both have plenty of power on the finish. You can’t go wrong, really.”

KOPKE AT THE BEST PRICE IN THE UNITED STATES!

Kopke Colheita Port, Portugal 1967 750ml $249 special, 6 bottles available
Wine Advocate 95 Points “The 1967 Colheita Tawny Port comes in with 142 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is a nice step up compared to the younger parts of the lineup, elegant and focused, with a precise finish, a fresh feel, little discernible brandy and a long, long finish. The classic old tawny flavors of molasses and caramel wash over the palate. This isn’t big and thick, but some may very well prefer its elegant and brighter feel. In many ways, it is fresher than the 1981 or 1999 reviewed this issue, and it is better balanced than the 1937. It is very pretty.”

Andre Clouet:

The Best Value in Bouzy

“Clouet farms some incredible Grand Cru plots around his home village of Bouzy as well as in the famous and very coveted middle slopes of Ambonnay with many vines in the best lieux-dits in the Champagne region. While great for celebrating events and special occasions, this Andre Clouet Silver Blanc de Noirs Brut Nature, with its beautiful and vivid mouse, goes sublimely well with food and makes for a noble companion with any meal. I am always impressed by Clouet’s lineup of Champagne(s), but especially so this stylish zero dosage Blanc de Noirs, which I highly recommend!” –Kerry Winslow, Grapelive

Founded in 1741, the Champagne House of Andre Clouet has been making some of the most recognizable Champagnes in their entire village for centuries. Jean-Francois Clouet, the current owner and winemaker, is committed to making wines that reflect the rich history of the region. His wines do just that, while representing some of the best values available.

Clouet sources his cuvees from the assorted plots in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy. The village specializes in powerfully structured Pinot Noir.  His latest releases offer ethereal fruit, dense minerality, and effusive aromatics. Don’t sleep on the Silver Label, a Grand Cru, bone-dry Brut Nature Champagne that offers generous aromatics to balance the crystalline-acidity and layers of minerals.

Andre Clouet has been the unofficial house Champagne of Vinopolis for years, and is always worth having on hand as a budget-friendly way to elevate your next meal or party.

100% Grand Cru Pinot Noir from Bouzy
Decanter 92 points
“[Reviewed 2021] Incredible value for a blanc de noirs (100% Pinot Noir) grower Champagne from the grand cru vineyards of Bouzy. It shows gorgeous aromas of stone fruit, citrus and strawberry, with complex brioche nuances, remarkable balance, ongoing elegance and a rich, refined, persistent finish. Drinking Window 2021 – 2026.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 92+ points
“[Reviewed Apr 2021] Clouet’s NV Silver Brut Nature Grand Cru is a pure Bouzy Pinot Noir that was disgorged without any dosage. This disgorgement displays a medium intense golden color and a complex and refined bouquet of ripe and pureed apples and discreet chalky as well as brioche aromas. The palate is elegant, straight and fresh, very pure and salty on the finish. This is a challenging Brut Nature that needs to be aged for two or three years to gain complexity and finesse and to smooth its current edges. The finish is mineral, limestone and salty but also a bit drying at this moment.”

Andre Clouet Grand Cru Brut Rosé NV 750ml $49 special, 25 bottles in stock now
Andre Clouet Grand Cru Brut Rosé NV 3L $319 special, 3 three-liters in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 90 points
“The latest release of Clouet’s deeply colored NV Brut Rosé No 3 Grand Cru is showing well, opening in the glass with notes of blood orange, red berries, ripe apples and oatmeal. On the palate, it’s full-bodied, broad and vinous, with ripe acids, a frothy mousse and a moderately intense finish. This is an attractive, gastronomic rosé that hails exclusively from Bouzy.” [Reviewed April 2019]

Benoît Déhu

Mastery of Meunier

As the eighth generation Champagne winemaker in his family, Benoît Déhu first cut his teeth at Bollinger before striking out on his own in 2010. Working off of his family holdings in the Marne, with barrels made from the forest bordering the property, these are meticulously crafted grower Champagnes at their finest.

Déhu has been blessed with the characteristic terroir of the Marne that contributes to his wine’s incredible aromatics and structure, namely the green clay overlaying pure limestone chalk. Eschewing new oak for aging, dosage for sweetness and flavoring, and intervention in general, these are some of the purest expressions of terroir you’ll ever find.

The majority of his grapes are sourced from his two-hectare vineyard, Rue De Noyers, which is planted to Pinot Meunier. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically and plowed mostly by horse. The results are less than 4,000 cases annually. It’s a small miracle that we acquire the amounts that we do, most of which we sell directly to another cult winemaker who shall remain nameless.

Our offerings include his rarely produced Rosé de Saignée, his flagship Rue des Noyers, and his Pinot Noir-included cuvée: Initiation. Given the majority of Pinot Meunier at play with these wines, you can expect mineral- and spice-driven Champagnes that have decades of aging potential ahead.

“This is a fine set of new releases from Benoît Déhu. As always, the emphasis is on Meunier and Pinot Noir. The top wines are done in barrel, but with the malolactic fermentation blocked, which always preserves tension to balance the natural richness of the red varieties. All of these wines were bottled with no dosage, another choice that emphasizes tension. Readers who have not tasted these incredibly distinctive Champagnes owe it to themselves to do so.” -Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Highlights In Stock Now from Benoît Déhu:

Benoît Déhu ‘Initiation’ Brut Nature NV (2020) 750ml $79 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points
“[Review for 2019-base] The NV Initiation, a blend of 77% Pinot Meunier and 23% Pinot Noir from two parcels in Fossoy, is a fine entry-level offering. Dried flowers, mint, spice and ginger all grace this attractive, mid-weight Champagne. There is a bit of reduction, but it works well in this style. I especially admire the finish here. Bottled with no dosage.”
Importer note “Cuvée Initiation is the newest addition to the Déhu lineup. Made from Pinot Noir and his signature variety Pinot Meunier, which Benoît planted using massale selection of Pommard clone from Burgundy. Oak vinification and ageing, unfined and unfiltered, low dosage. The wine is zippy and round with a persistent finish.”

Benoît Déhu Cuvée de L’Orme Brut Nature NV (2017) 750ml $149 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The NV (2017) Cuvée L’Orme is another impressive Champagne from Benoît Déhu. Aromatic and light on its feet, L’Orme shows the more delicate, nuanced side of Pinot Noir off to great effect. Kirsch, wild flowers, mint, spice and dried flowers are all nicely lifted. L’Orme is classy, understated and impossible to resist. Bright acids and veins of salinity extend the finish effortlessly. No dosage.”
Importer note “100% Pinot Noir from a tiny parcel previously planted with elm trees (Orme). This barrel-aged, zero dosage cuvee captures the attributes of complexity, personality and pedigree that make Déhu Champagnes so alluring.”

Benoît Déhu Cuvée La Rue des Noyers Brut Nature NV (2018) 750ml $99 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The NV (2018) Cuvée La Rue des Noyers is classy, elegant and polished, all in the understated style of the year. Pear, dried flowers, chamomile and spice are all nicely layered. Soft contours wrap it all together in style. Consisting of 100% Meunier from a biodynamically farmed site in Fossoy, this was aged in barrels mostly made from trees in the surrounding forest. The 2018 is a bit lighter than some recent years, but there is plenty of subtle intensity here and a good bit of vibrancy as well. Zero dosage.”

Benoît Déhu Rosé de Saignée Cuvée La Rue des Noyers Brut Nature NV (2020) 750ml $132 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points
“The NV (2020) Rosé Saignée Cuvée La Rue des Noyers (100% Pinot Meunier) is terrific, especially for the year. Bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, spice, mint and dried herbs all develop in the glass. Vinified from completely de-stemmed fruit that sees no pressing, this a pretty light saignée Rosé – that is neither good nor bad, just a comment on style. The finish is redolent of savory, earthy Meunier character. Zero dosage.”

Diebolt-Vallois

Budget-Friendly, Top-Quality Côte des Blancs

The Côte des Blancs region in Champagne is home to some of the most sought after and exquisite sparkling wine in the world. In the Cote des Blancs village of Cramant, Diebolt-Vallois is a star player, in part due to the quality of their vineyard holdings in the region and nearby Epernay. The estate has focused on Blanc de Blancs since their founding in 1959. These are very classic representations of Champagne. With a house style characterized by crisp minerality, food friendly acidity and refreshing fruit profile expressing notes of orchard fruits and citrus.

A staff favorite and an incredible value across the board!

“[Most recent review for a previous disgorgement] The austere power of this wine buzzes in the mouth, a tingle of limestone, apple flesh and the pale toast of lees. It’s a delicate, pure chardonnay that becomes dramatic in its intensity and breadth. The precision of the flavors will serve this well as it ages.”

Diebolt-Vallois ‘Fleur de Passion’ Blanc de Blancs Brut 2008 1.5L $799 special, 3 magnums in stock now
Winery note
“Pure Chardonnay made from our oldest plots located in Cramant Grand Cru terroir. This Blanc de Blancs, 100% 2008 harvest, is vinified in oak barrels without malolactic fermentation nor filtration. This bottling [was] prolonged by an ageing on lees during 13 years in our cellars… The Champagne Fleur de Passion is the jewel in the range from the house of Diebolt-Vallois. It is only made in the very best years. This wine is created entirely in barrel, following the major principles of the first wine Jacques Diebolt made together with his grandfather in 1953. Fleur de Passion is a precious and delicate champagne, it is complex, intense and long on the palate. 100% chardonnay.”

Gatinois

Opulence in Äy

Äy is an easy village to love in Champagne—and also a place that’s easy to have never heard about. It’s Pinot country but its biggest and most famous landowner, Bollinger, doesn’t have anything on their labels to let you know where they’re based. Nevertheless, that richer, more powerful style that everyone associated with Bollinger (and the other big producer in the town, Gosset) is very much the flavor of Äy. The Champagnes from the village show tons of rich fruit and opulent, impressive textures to match their cepage—there’s no doubt they’re Pinot-based bubbles.

Of the producers in Äy, Gatinois might be the most undervalued. The family farms some of the best land in the town and works with a very high proportion of a massale selection of Pinot Noir called “Petite Pinot d’Äy” that has extremely small berries. These small berries ensure an exceptionally flavorful base wine that translate into the finished product—Gatinois’ wines are rich, textured and powerful. We’re excited to carry them again, just in time for New Year’s and other holiday celebrations.

Pascal Doquet

THE Farmer of Champagne

“It’s the viticulture that makes the difference, not the vinification.” -Pascal Doquet

With an eye towards thoughtful, organic farming, Pascal Doquet epitomizes grower Champagne. Not only does his estate encompass some of the finest terroir in all of Champagne in the illustrious Côte des Blancs, his organic-certified parcels boast significant amounts of old vines. His resulting Champagnes are a magnificent tribute to his masterful and conscientious farming.

Though the wines are rarely reviewed, most recent notes can be found from Stephan Reinhardt of the Wine Advocate in 2018. Reinhardt wrote up the 2006 releases and their accompanying NVs. Much of his prose is dedicated to descriptions of the mineral character of the wine, with repeated use of terms such as saline, chalky, iodine, flinty, or crystalline. While rich in mineral notes, these wines are not austere. Instead, they deliver generous layers of fruit and leesy character balanced by refreshing elegance.

These are grower Champagnes in the truest sense of the term, strikingly beautiful, and extremely limited in quantity.

“The wines of Pascal Doquet burst with energy and verve and deliver mineral-laden, multi-layered expressions of his terroirs.  These are wines for people looking to experience the scintillating flavors of the Côte-des-Blancs ‘sans maquillage’ (without makeup).” -Schatzi Wines

Pascal Doquet ‘Arpege’ Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Extra Brut (2017-base) NV 750ml $69 special, 27 bottles in stock now
Importer note
“The chardonnay for “Arpège” comes from Vertus, Villeneuve and Mont Aimé—the grapes that are not in the Coeur de Terroir series. There is substantial reserve wine in the blend, preserved in enamel tanks to maintain freshness. Aromas of spice, black tea and pear dominate the flinty-silex soils from the Mont Aimé and lend smokiness and depth to the structure.”

Pascal Doquet ‘Champs Libres’ Blanc de Blancs Brut (2018-base) NV 750ml $49 special, 28 bottles in stock now

Importer note
“Pascal’s grandfather consolidated to 1 hectare in which Pascal still owns 60 acres of, including “Les Migraines” where he has very old vines, planted in 1929. Approximately half is fermented in enamel and the rest in neutral barrel. It’s as impressive a non-vintage Champagne as is available anywhere. There are aromas of ginger, anise, zest and sandalwood, and the Champagne emphasizes the spicy characteristics of Le Mesnil. The wine finishes with some cut which helps focus the finish.”

Pascal Doquet Le Mont Aime Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Extra Brut 2009 750ml $95 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Importer note
“The Mont Aimé lieu-dit is east of Vertus and faces due south. Even so, it is a cooler microclimate than Pascal’s parcels in Le Mesnil and Vertus and ripening here can happen a week later. Previous vintages were fermented in tank to support the racy, linear style of the wine, but as things evolve, Pascal now ferments roughly half in neutral barrel and half in enamel lined stainless steel tanks, which brings out a cool blueberry and smoky characteristic common to flinty, silex soils.”

R. Dumont

Chablis-eque Soils, Champagne Spirit

The Dumont family grows their wines in the Aube. This is a small sub-region of Champagne is known for its Kimmeridgian soils and for being the home of dozens of up-and-coming to rock-star producers (such as Vouette e Sorbee and Marie Courtin). Producers in the regions of Champagne that surround Epernay often snubbed the Aube for not being “true” Champagne while buying grapes from the region to fill their winemaking vats. Champagne insiders know better, and look here for innovation and value.

A note from Wine Traditions, importer of R. Dumont Champagnes for the USA: “The Champagne house of the Dumont family is situated in Champignol-lez-Mondeville, a village in the southern Champagne region of the Aube, some 90 miles southeast of Reims and Epernay. Characterized by forested hills, streams and vineyards, it is a natural and reflective environment that has attracted people such as Saint Bernard (Clairvaux) and Renoir (Essoyes). The Dumonts have owned vineyards in this area for over two hundred years and today three Dumont brothers work together to produce champagne exclusively from their own 22 hectares. The soils are a geological extension of those in Chablis, namely kimmeridgian chalky clay. The vineyard is planted with 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay. Bernard Dumont’s comments are insightful. ‘We grow grapes on the same soils as the vine growers in the Chablis region. There, they produce white wine from white grapes and here we produce white wine from red grapes.'”

R. Dumont & Fils Solera Reserve Blanc de Blancs, Champagne NV 750ml $49 special, 11 bottles in stock now
Importer note
“Dumont is one of the very few Champagne producers who produces a champagne using the solera method. Bernard Dumont has dedicated one stainless steel tank to the project which was first filled in 1991. He works exclusively with chardonnay for this cuvée and has been adding to the tank every year, making it at present, a blend of approximately 20 vintages. This solera system produced its first release in 2010. One of the most striking features of this champagne is the different effect created by producing a champagne from aged wine (the aging occurs after the first fermentation) followed by the typical duration of two years “sur lattes” as contrasted with a champagne produced from relatively young wines which are aged for a long time after the secondary fermentation and thus remain in contact with the lees “sur lattes” for an extended period. The dosage is 6 grams. Production is about 400 cases annually.”

R. Dumont & Fils Extra Brut Millesime, Champagne 2012 750ml $59 special, 13 bottles in stock now
Importer note
“The vintage wines, which are a blend of 65% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay, are assembled and then matured “sur lattes” for five to six years before being disgorged. According to the characteristics of the vintage the dosage varies.”

R. Dumont & Fils Tradition Brut, Champagne, France NV 375ml $21.90 special, 14 half-bottles in stock now
Importer note
“The Dumont Brut NV is a blend of 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay. The grapes from their vineyard have qualities that seem less aggressive and more sumptuous than those from the northern districts. In addition, vinification of whole berries at low temperatures enhances this quality of soft elegance. The NV is a blend of vintages typically between two and five years old. It is aged for two years on the lees before disgorgement. Dosage is 7 grams.”

R. Dumont & Fils Cuvée Rosé Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $39 special, 21 bottles in stock now
Importer note
“The Dumont Brut Rosé is made exclusively from Pinot Noir. A selection is made in the vineyard from parcels that are particularly ripe and from bunches with deeply colored skins. Fermentation proceeds as with red wines but the wine is drawn off the skins after a day or so with the Dumonts looking carefully at the balance of extraction, color and tannin. This method, known as “saignée”, is a tricky art but one that can produce the most natural and delicately complex style of Rosé champagne. The Brut Rosé NV is aged for two years on the lees before disgorgement and dosage is 10 grams.”

The wines of R.H. Coutier are perpetually some of the most beloved Champagnes in the shop.  Based in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay, the Coutier Champagnes display the power and richness of the village—and at a price that’s unmatched for their town.  We sell dozens of cases of their “Tradition” bottling but the gem in the lineup is their Blanc de Blancs.

R.H. Coutier Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut NV 750ml $41.90 special, 32 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points
“[Review for 2022 release] The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru is fabulous. Rich and quite dense, the Blanc de Blancs is decidedly powerful, maybe a bit more than usual. This release is based on 2018, and the richness of the year really comes through in the wine’s layered, expansive feel. Tangerine oil, lemon confit, white flowers, spice and chamomile build effortlessly. This is an especially heady, vinous Champagne with all the elements very much in balance.”
Importer note “Disgorged December 2022, base vintage 2019 60% + 40% reserves.”

Wine & Spirits 91 points
“[Review for 2022 disgorgement] The Coutier family blends 20 percent chardonnay into the pinot noir for this cuvée, all of it estate grown in the grand cru village of Ambonnay. The wine balances tart lemon and lime scents with notes of sourdough starter and rhubarb. Almost cakey in its richness, this has the limestone acidity to cut through rich foods, whether seared foie gras or braised short ribs.”
Importer note “Disgorged February 2022, base 2017 60% + 40% reserves.”

“In 1948, Henri Coutier was one of if not THE first to plant chardonnay in Ambonnay, a Grand Cru villages normally devoted to Pinot Noir. He planted this varietal in a single-vineyard plot called Pierre aux Larrons, and this plot has become the source of all massale selection chardonnay cuttings that the winery uses. In 2015, his grandson Antoine returned to the estate to vinify his first vintage and the decision was made to make the first single-vineyard chardonnay bottling for the estate.”

“The NV Brut Réserve is bright and finely sculpted right out of the glass. There’s terrific purity and energy running through the Brut Réserve. Crushed red berry fruit, white pepper, crushed rocks and mint all race out of the glass. This release is based on 2020, with a good bit of reserve wine (35%) that serves to create terrific balance. The 5.5 grams of dosage is not at all felt.”

“This Prestige cuvee blended with 50% Meunier and 50% Chardonnay, some of which is produced from vines of over 70 years old, is patiently aged across many years in the darkness of our cellars and reveals the superb alchemy between two contrasting and yet complementary grape varieties. “The non-vintage Brut is a blend in which the 70% Pinot Meunier forms the base and 30% Chardonnay adds complexity and finesse. In addition to the base vintage (typically 2 years old), the NV Brut benefits from being blended with reserve wines that are often 4 or 5 years old. The champagne is typically 2+ years “sur lattes” and carries a dosage of 9 grams.”

Joseph Perrier Cuvée Royale Blanc de Blancs Brut NV 750ml $59 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 90 points
“This stylish wine balances crisp fruit with a mineral texture and well-structured acidity. The wine is still young, with a tight, zesty texture and crispness. It should be better from 2019. Roger Voss”

Pierre Peters Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut L’Esprit de 2018 750ml $119 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 91 points
“The L’Esprit de 2018 is a very pretty wine that shows the natural complexity of a Champagne that has spent a few years in bottle. Floral and light on its feet, the 2018 also reflects a vintage with higher yields in its mid-weight structure. Lemon peel, white flowers, mint, sage and almond are all nicely layered. The 2018 is not terribly complex or deep, but it is immensely charming. Disgorged: November 2022.”

Pierre Peters L’Etonnant Monsieur Victor Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru 2016 750ml $499 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points
“The 2016 L’Etonnant Monsieur Victor Edition TB.16 is one of the best wines I have tasted from Rodolphe Péters. Bright and soaring, the 2016 is a real head-turner. The purity of the citrus, floral and mineral notes is just remarkable. Hazelnut, dried citrus peel and tangerine oil open with aeration. The 2016 is a wine of exquisite subtlety and nuance. As always, Monsieur Victor is a blend of one tank of his Chétillons and a tank of Réserve Oubliée. I loved it. Disgorged: December 2022. Dosage is 4 grams per liter.”

Pierre Peters Réserve Oubliée Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut NV 750ml $128 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The NV Brut Réserve Oubliée (base 2017) currently shows a bit more freshness and verve than the 2016 base tasted alongside it, which could be a reflection of the base vintages and/or disgorgement dates. In any event, I would prefer to cellar this for at least a year. Bright citrus, white flowers, crushed rocks and bright saline notes confer energy. The 2017 is a wine for readers who enjoy tense Champagnes. I especially admire how the wine opens with time in the glass. It’s a beguiling Champagne to be sure. As a reminder, the Réserve Oubliée is a selection of Cuvée de Réserve that spends an extra year on its lees and is aged on cork. Disgorged: October 2022. Dosage is 4 grams per liter.”

Frederic Savart “Bulle de Rosé” Premier Cru Brut Rosé NV 750ml $84.50 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Importer note (Grand Cru Selections)
“Fred’s rosé is a rosé d’assemblage composed of 70% Pinot Noir, 22% Chardonnay, and 8% still red wine. It comes entirely from the village of Ecueil. It is fermented mostly in stainless steel, with around 20% of the blend made in neutral barrels. The dosage is 6g/L”
“Disgorged July 2023. Base vintage 80% 2020, 20% 2021.”

Frederic Savart ‘Les Noues’ Ecueil Premier Cru Extra Brut 2019 750ml $155 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points
“The 2019 Extra-Brut Les Noues is 100% Pinot Noir from a parcel planted on sand over chalk. It is endowed with tremendous textural richness and breadth that captures the natural intensity of this radiant year. Crushed flowers, red berry fruit, mint, cinnamon and light nutty overtones all grace this exquisite, open-knit Champagne. Even with its very recent disgorgement, the 2019 is very easy to enjoy right now. Disgorged: February 2023.”

Frederic Savart ‘L’Ouverture’ Ecueil Blanc de Noirs Premier Cru Brut NV 750ml $64.50 special, 16 bottles in stock now
Importer note (Grand Cru Selections)
“L’Ouverture is Fred Savart’s entry level Champagne but it is far from one-dimensional. It is 100% Pinot Noir all from the village of Ecueil, half of which was fermented in mostly neutral barrel with the other half is fermented in stainless steel. The wine only sees partial malolactic fermentation. Fred doesn’t guide the malolactic fermentation, instead it is the inclusion of reserve wine that goes through malolactic fermentation because it has gone more temperature swings.”
Importer note “Disgorged July 2023. Base vintage 80% 2021 plus 10% 2019 & 2020.”

Frederic Savart ‘Le Mont Benoit’ Premier Cru Extra Brut 2019 750ml $188 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The 2019 Brut Nature Le Mont Benoit is superb. Ample and substantial in feel, the 2019 Mont Benoit impresses with its sheer stature. Readers will find an intense Champagne that is all texture. Dried citrus peel, chamomile, spice and a kiss of French oak all run this wonderfully expressive, resonant Champagne from Savart. The Mont Benoit is another new release in this range that straddles the line between Champagne and still wine. Disgorged: February2023.”
Importer note (Grand Cru Selections) “Le Mont Benoit (made a household name by Emmanuel Brochet) is a single parcel in Villers-aux-Noeuds. Fred’s plot is 95% Pinot Noir, and 5% Chardonnay. The dosage is 3g/L.”

Suenen ‘C+C’ Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut NV (2019) 750ml $119 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Importer’s Notes
“Grapes sourced from Chouilly and Cramant grand cru vineyards. Alongside the Oiry bottling the C+C represents one of the two NV bottlings that Aurélien produces. In general the C+C is a bit richer with more breadth than the Oiry bottling.”

Suenen ‘Le Mont-Aigu’ Chouilly Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut 2016 750ml $249 special, 6 bottles in stock now
No reviews for the 2016 vintage. 2015 review provided for reference.
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2015 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Chouilly Le Mont-Aigu has turned out brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with scents of citrus oil, white flowers, bread dough and almond paste. Medium to full-bodied, racy and incisive, with a pillowy pinpoint mousse and chalky structuring extract, it’s the result of yields that would be considered low even in the Côte d’Or (a mere 25 hectoliters per hectare), as the vines are infected with leaf roll virus.”

Suenen ‘La Cocluette’ Oiry Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut 2016 750ml $219 special, 4 bottles in stock now
No reviews for the 2016 vintage. 2015 review provided for reference.
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93 points
“From a parcel planted in 1925, Suenen’s 2015 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Oiry La Cocluette unwinds in the glass with aromas of citrus zest, freshly baked bread, dried white flowers and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, ample and pillowy, with racy acids and a long, precise finish, it has turned out very well.”

Bonus Champagne Arriving Tomorrow:

Louis Roederer Collection 243 Brut NV 750ml $59 pre-arrival special, 36+ bottles available
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 93 points
“The NV Champagne Collection 243 Brut is the third release and is based on the 2018 vintage, with the addition of 30% of the perpetual reserve started in 2012 and 10% reserve wine that has been aged in oak. It is ripe and balanced, with yellow flowers, honeycomb, and plum, and it has elegant concentration and underlying tension, precise mousse, and rich salinity, with lingering notes of croissant and delicate smoke. This will be an exciting wine in the range to follow. Drink 2022-2037.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92 points “Based on the 2018 vintage and complemented by reserve wines from a solera established in 2012, as well as younger foudre-aged reserve wines, Roederer’s newly released NV Brut Collection 243 is a pillowy, enveloping Champagne evocative of crisp stone fruits, honeycomb, white flowers and buttery pastry. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and generous, with an ample core of fruit, bright acids and a saline finish, it will offer demonstrative drinking on release.”
Wine Spectator 92 points “A vibrant Champagne that’s fine and creamy on the palate, almost plush, but bright and well-balanced throughout. Reveals a chalky base note that underscores layers of ripe pear and nectarine fruit, mandarin orange peel, oyster shell and chamomile. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. Drink now. 40,000 cases imported.”

Andre Clouet: Life is a dream…

“André Clouet is one of my favorite small domaines in Champagne. At their best, proprietor Jean-François Clouet’s wines are distinctive and full of character.”
-Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The Dream champagnes are a celebration of Clouet’s most accomplished vintages. They are 100% Chardonnay, bottled one year after harvest, and disgorged on order.

Andre Clouet Brut Dream Vintage 2006 750ml $75 special, 13 bottles available
James Suckling 95 Points “A rich and almost opulent champagne for lovers of mature chardonnay. As much melted butter as candied-lemon and orange character. Glides over the palate into the very silky finish, the touch of salinity creating a wonderful tension with the creaminess. 100% chardonnay. Drink or hold.”

Andre Clouet Dream Vintage 2008 750ml $85 special, 20 bottles available
James Suckling 96 Points “Such a classic Blanc de Blancs champagne with the special elegance, brilliance and minerality of the 2008 vintage. Very well structured, but without the austere acidity structure that some 2008s have. Long and very clean finish that sends you back to the glass. 100% chardonnay. Drink or hold.”

Andre Clouet Brut Dream Vintage 2013 750ml $53.50 special, 7 bottles available

Diebolt-Vallois

Diebolt-Vallois is a grower Champagne house located in the Grand Cru village of Cramant in the Côte des Blancs. The winemaking is meticulous at this tiny estate, with parcel-by-parcel vinification and the use of neutral oak in the fermentation of the top wines.

The pricing, like the house’s style, is a throwback to classical Champagne. The entry-level Tradition, which is easily the finest under $40 Champagne, is a blend of Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs villages of Cuis and Chouilly and Pinot Noir and Meunier from the villages of Épernay and Marfaux. It elegantly marries the structure of Chardonnay with the red fruit and forward-drinking appeal of the Pinots.
Diebolt-Vallois Tradition Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $38 special, 23 bottles available
Wine & Spirits 93 points “[Most recent review for a previous disgorgement] Deep in color, with rich scents of peach and toasty notes of fresh almond, this is clean and compact, finishing with the creaminess of hazelnut flan. What’s hard to describe is the beauty of its simple line—one taster compared it to the sleek design of a vintage Ferrari.”
Winery note “The Champagne Tradition is assembled from the three major champagne grape varieties and is the only white wine of the whole range which is not pure chardonnay.”

Diebolt-Vallois Blanc de Blancs Brut, Champagne NV 375ml $26 special, 13 half-bottles available
Diebolt-Vallois Blanc de Blancs Brut, Champagne NV 1.5L $112 special, 6 magnums available
Wine Spectator 91 points “[Most recent review for a previous disgorgement] Rich aromas and flavors of poached apricot, melon, tangerine and hazelnut are enlivened by vibrant acidity in this well-knit Champagne, with a creamy finish of graphite and spice.”
Winery Note “The Champagne Blanc de Blancs is a non-vintage brut champagne, 100% chardonnay from the Cote des Blancs and the Coteaux d’Epernay.”

The Prestige bottling, the most shockingly underpriced wine of the entire lineup, is made from Chardonnay from Cuis, Épernay and Cramant. This is richly textured with generous orchard fruit and creamy leesy notes and a palate-refreshing dash of minerality.

Diebolt-Vallois ‘Fleur de Passion RD’ Blanc de Blancs Brut, Champagne 2008 750ml $399 special, only 5 bottles available

Diebolt-Vallois ‘Fleur de Passion RD’ Blanc de Blancs Brut, Champagne 2008 1.5L $799 special, only 3 magnums available
Winery note “Pure Chardonnay made from our oldest plots located in Cramant Grand Cru terroir. This Blanc de Blancs, 100% 2008 harvest, is vinified in oak barrels without malolactic fermentation nor filtration. This bottling in 2009 is prolonged by an ageing on lees during 13 years in our cellars… The Champagne Fleur de Passion is the jewel in the range from the house of Diebolt-Vallois. It is only made in the very best years. This wine is created entirely in barrel, following the major principles of the first wine Jacques Diebolt made together with his grandfather in 1953. Fleur de Passion is a precious and delicate champagne, it is complex, intense and long on the palate. 100% chardonnay.”

Diebolt-Vallois Brut Rose, Champagne NV 750ml $44.50 special, 22 bottles available
Wine Spectator 91 points “[Most recent review for a previous disgorgement] An elegant rosé Champagne, fresh with crunchy acidity and lacy texture, this shows a delicate mesh of star fruit, pink grapefruit pith, star anise and pickled ginger. Chalk-tinged finish.”
Winery note “The lively Pink Champagne Rosé – mainly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay – offers up sweet aromas of small red fruits.”

Fresne Ducret

“In 2014, Pierre Fresne undertook a new adventure by creating exceptional wines and champagnes in limited series for connoisseurs. Since then, he has produced one or two of these unique wines each year, according to his desires and the profile of the vintage. This collection is called Arquémie, that’s what alchemy was called in the Middle Ages. Described as “a truly royal science and an undoubtedly divine study…it makes a thousand different waters, a thousand oils, numerous liqueurs without which one could not live comfortably or even live at all,” Arquémie embodies the spirit of this range micro-cuvées.” –Fresne Ducret

Fresne Ducret Le Chemin Du Chemin Premier Cru NV, Champagne 750ml $44.50 special, 18 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast Roger Voss 94 Points “This Champagne shows some fine maturity. A blend based on the 2014 vintage, it now has toastiness while keeping intense freshness. Acidity and touches of minerality come through the spiciness. Drink now.”
Fresne Ducret Arquemie No 2 Premier Cru Blanc De Blancs NV, Champagne 750ml $59 special, 12 bottles available

Jose Michel

Jose Michel Special Club 2014 750ml $69 special, 12 bottles available
Winery Notes “This Prestige cuvee blended with 50% Meunier and 50% Chardonnay, some of which is produced from vines of over 70 years old, is patiently aged across many years in the darkness of our cellars and reveals the superb alchemy between two contrasting and yet complementary grape varieties. This Cuvée is made according to the very sought-after “Club Trésor de Champagne” charter that can only be claimed by 25 Champagne Wine Growers.”

OREGON

Cameron Winery Abbey Ridge Cuvee Julia Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 750ml $112 special, 20 bottles available
Winemaker Note “Our Julia Pinot noir is vinified from 40 year old vines located in a small block of Martin Ray Massale in the Abbey Ridge vineyard. It is aged for two years in barrique with one additional year in bottle. The nose shows top-level cru fruit saturation. It has a huge range of fruit profiles from blackberry to blueberry to strawberry, with a bit of licorice thrown in for good measure. Hints of charcuterie for you meat lovers. It’s reminiscent of wines made from vineyards above the village of Gevrey.

The label represents a native Madrone tree which grows next to the vineyard. Named in honor of Julia Wayne of Abbey Ridge, who also drew the illustration for the label, this extremely limited wine is elegant and charming, just like its namesake. This is a wine you can age for years.”

Saint Damien

The Louisiane & Souteyrades Vineyards Were Not Bottled In The 2021 Vintage. Louisiane and Souteyrades is going into this wine. Get it, lots of it, if you can. Raised in neutral, 50 hectoliter oak foudres.
Domaine Saint Damien Gigondas Vieilles Vignes, Rhône 2021 750ml $34.50 special, 36+ bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck  96 Points “Moving to the 2019s, this is a great vintage for this estate, and all of the wines showed brilliantly. The 2019 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is its usual 80/20 split of Grenache and Mourvèdre and has awesome dark fruits, ground pepper, licorice, truffle, and earthy mineral-like aromas and flavors. I love its mid-palate, it has elegance as well as power, ripe tannins, and a great finish. I finished my note with “Wow.””
Vinous  93-95 Points “Vivid ruby. A highly fragrant bouquet evokes candied red fruits, smoky minerals and lavender; a spicy nuance builds as the wine opens up. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, juicy raspberry, cherry and floral pastille flavors show good heft, seamless texture and real energy. It finishes spicy and impressively long, with sneaky tannins adding a final grip. This is shaping up to be a highly impressive entry-level bottling, which is not surprising given that this is the only Gigondas that will be bottled this year, so all the juice from the Louisiane and Souteyrades is going into this wine. Get it, lots of it, if you can. Raised in neutral, 50 hectoliter oak foudres.”

Domaine Saint Damien Cotes du Rhone Le Blanc, Rhône 2022 750ml $16 special, 36+ bottles available
Importer’s Note “White wine. Southern Rhône, France. Organic. Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Viognier. Notes of white peach and citrus on the nose and palate. After some time in the glass, fines herbs and hints of almond complement the citrus and fruit flavors. Full-bodied, but shows good and balanced acidity and minerality.”

Domaine Saint Damien Cotes du Rhone La Bouveau, Rhône 2020 750ml $18 special, 36+ bottles available
Importer’s Note “Red wine. Southern Rhône, France. Organic. 80% Syrah, 15% Cinsault, 5% Viognier. A terrific value in just about every vintage, the Côtes du Rhône le Bouveau from this terrific estate offers lots of jammy raspberry and black cherry nuances intermixed with hints of olives, truffle and farmyard. Fruity, rounded and mouth-filling, with tons of charm, it’s ideal for drinking over the coming 3-4 years. With food this is a versatile wine, it can stand against a rib-eye or work well with a pork roast. Where it will do best is with meats like lamb, or duck, particularly seared chops or breast.”

Louis Jadot

Louis Jadot Domaine des Heritiers Corton Pougets Grand Cru, Cote de Beaune 2021 750ml $169 special, 12 bottles available
Neal Martin-Vinous 94-96 Points “The 2021 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru has a wonderful bouquet with transparent red cherry, raspberry and floral notes. This wine is classy and seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins. It’s lithe and agile in the mouth with a mineral undertow towards the finish. Often one of Jadot’s classiest offerings, this Pougets is no different and one of their stars in 2021.”

M Plouzeau

M Plouzeau Clos de Maulevrier Touraine ‘Ante Phylloxera’ Franc de Pied, Loire 2017 750ml $119 special, 2 bottles available
Importer Note “This rare cuvée comes from a small vineyard of only 40 acres, populated by vines planted in 1860 and having survived phylloxera. Free of vines, without rootstock, these Cabernet Francs allow a real journey through time. They have been cultivated without chemicals for many years, with great care, all the work in the vineyard being done manually. In the cellar, the berries harvested by hand are transported to vats by gravity, then ferment using only indigenous yeasts. Marc Plouzeau practices delicate extractions, then after pressing, the wine is aged for several months in barrels. These very old vines offer a complex and harmonious cuvée, scented with red fruits enhanced by fine spices and a touch of undergrowth. The palate, greedy and fresh, displays a delicate and slightly suave substance. A great Loire wine, produced at only 1000 bottles per vintage.”

Cascina delle Rose

We dare you to name a better woman run, organic practicing, Barbaresco house. You can’t? Neither can we, but we know you will love these elegant, rose and earth-scented wines as much as you do!

Cascina delle Rose Barbaresco Rio Sordo, Barbaresco DOCG 2020 750ml $74.50 special, 30 bottles available
Wine Advocate 95 Points “This is Cascina delle Rose’s other single-vineyard wine from a second nearby site in the village of Barbaresco. The 2020 Barbaresco Rio Sordo is slightly more linear and streamlined compared to the Tre Stelle in this vintage. That wine felt more immediate to me, but the Rio Sordo feels more long-term thanks to elegant fruit, crushed stone and sweet licorice aromas it offers. Production is 3,500 bottles.”

Cascina delle Rose Tre Stelle, Barbaresco DOCG 2020 750ml $74.50 special, 24 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 Points “The 2020 Barbaresco Tre Stelle is a delight to drink. The character of this vintage is more accessible for sure, and the fruit is very bright and supple. But there’s no harm in drinking this warm-vintage release of 7,500 bottles on the early side while all its primary aromas are so intact and enticing. The tannins are soft, and the wine shows medium richness to close.”

Cascina Delle Rose Langhe Nebbiolo 2022 750ml $33 special, 24 bottles available
Winery Notes “The vineyard is located in the village of Barbaresco, in lean soils, rich in mineral salts and densely stratified. Bright garnet red, elegant classic fruity and floral notes of the Three Stars, deep, clean, the clear expression of the grape. Dense texture of tannin, fine, silky. Very persistent finish. It matches perfectly with cured meats and raw hams, white or red meats and medium-aged cheeses.”

GD Vajra

G.D. Vajra Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml $89 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 97 Points “The organic G.D. Vajra 2019 Barolo Ravera (with fruit from the most sought-after cru in the village of Novello) reveals gorgeous tonality and color. The wine shines bright with dark ruby and garnet gemstone. Healthy Nebbiolo colors like this can be admired across the 2019 vintage. Ravera represents a union of different geologies from Barolo and Castiglione Falletto. The site has shown extraordinary versatility, especially in the face of climate change, to make wines of both strength and elegance. It is softly textured but also strong in fiber, with silky sensations followed by dark fruit and concentration. Ravera has a character all its own, and the operative word here is power.”

GERMANY

Weingut Hermann Ludes

Importer of German Riesling Vom Boden states it plainly: “This is the first Mosel estate we’ve taken on in almost nine years; let that tell you something about how important we think it is.” When Vom Boden, who brings us such essential German wineries as Keller and Emrich-Schonleber talks, the wine world must listen!

The Ludes estate is located off the beaten path in Mosel, specifically they derive from the village of Thornich, an area that has been divisive to some Riesling lovers in the past but for uncompromising winemakers like Julian Ludes they are a manifesto. Quoting Vom Boden again, “rustic, transparent, bracing – even a touch brutal – [like] Mosel wines that were probably common decades ago. Yet this style has been nearly forgotten, pushed aside by the riper, fruitier, easier style of plush-and-giving Mosel wine.

If you love structured, acid-driven wines with dense minerality, you can’t afford to miss these!

Hermann Ludes ‘Hermann’ Riesling, Mosel 2022 750ml $21.90 special, 12 bottles available
Vom Boden Importer Notes “This is a curvier, also lighter and more  ephemeral-feeling wine – as if you don’t really even have to drink it, as if it will just saturate and then evaporate, leaving a pleasing sorta wine-tingle […] The wine smells of the perfume of fermentation, pears, quince, spice, flowers and rocks with a rustic spritzy energy. Just essential deliciousness”

Hermann Ludes Thornicher Ritsch Riesling Kabinett Feinherb, Mosel 2022 750ml $33 special, 36 bottles available
Mosel Fine Wines “The finish is chiseled, focused, and superbly long. The aftertaste is marked by smoke, lime, and ginger-driven spices, and above all shows huge energy. This is a splendid dry-tasting and racy wine, made for lovers of straightforward and sharp Riesling. It only needs a few years to round off its edges.”

Hermann Ludes Thornicher Kabinet Feinherb Gack Unten Riesling, Mosel 2022 750ml $33 special, 36 bottles available
Mosel Fine Wines “It takes a few minutes in the glass for it to show its complexity, with notes of cassis, wild strawberry, candied grapefruit, fine spices, aniseed herbs, and fresh herbs. The wine has superb balance on the palate, with finesse but also intensity and grip. The finish is very long, chiseled, and refreshing. What a gloriously light yet deep expression of dry-tasting Kabinett!”

Hermann Ludes Riesling, Mosel 2022 750ml $18 special, 24 bottles available
Mosel Fine Wines “The first nose is very smoky (bacon), with, after a few minutes’ aeration, notes of earthy herbs, potpourri, yellow peach, greengage, and spearmint. The palate brings plenty of fresh yellow fruits, with a touch of creaminess and juiciness. The finish is clean and light. This light off-dry Riesling is simply delicious.”

Hermann Ludes Thornicher Kabinett ‘im Schneidersberg’ T Riesling, Mosel 2022 750ml $33 special, 24 bottles available
Mosel Fine Wines “The wine comes over as straightforward and lean on the palate, with dynamism provided by some salivating acidity. The finish is taut, long, and tart, and clearly still austere. It will need a few years to soften. This lively, airy, and racy dry wine is remarkable, and will appeal to fans of this style.”

Hermann Ludes Thornicher Ritsch Riesling Kabinett Terrassen, Mosel 2022 750ml $29 special, 36 bottles available
Mosel Fine Wines “The wine is airy and finely fruity on the palate, with sappy yellow peach adding creaminess and juiciness. The finish is remarkably light, yet intense and very long. This is a remarkable Kabinett from the 2022 vintage.”

Hermann Ludes Thornicher Riesling, Mosel 2022 750ml $24 special, 12 bottles available
Mosel Fine Wines “The wine is deliciously fresh and slightly juicy on the palate, with plenty of spices and a saline edge which gives tension to the very delicate and precise finish. The aftertaste is dry-tasting and superbly airy. This dry-tasting Riesling is remarkably elegant and fresh.”

Weingut Emrich-Schonleber

Emrich-Schonleber Monzinger Fruhlingsplatzchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2022 $79 special, 9 bottles available
Emrich-Schonleber Monzinger Fruhlingsplatzchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2022 1.5L $189 special, 2 bottles available
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 98 Points “One of the stars of the vintage in the Nahe! Cool and uplifting with a wealth of fresh and dried herbs and the whole spectrum of citrus. Powerful and compact on the palate which has breathtaking herbal and mineral intensity. Expands and expands at the super-long finish. Excellent aging potential, but you can drink it from release.”

Weingut Emrich-Schonleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2022 750ml $89 special, 9 bottles available
Weingut Emrich-Schonleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2022 1.5L $199 special, 2 bottles available
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 95 Points “Very attractive nose of peach and spice with just a touch of exotic fruits. Rich and ripe with a touch of mid-palate creaminess as it rolls gently over you, the power very understated. Delicate slatey minerality at the long silky finish. Drink from release.”

PORTUGAL

Kopke Colheita Tawny 1957 750ml $489 special, 3 bottles available $489 special, 3 bottles available
Harriet Kininmonth-IWSC 98 Points “Still showing elegance and incredible complexity when considering the age. Soft and mellow, loaded with ripe soft stone fruit. Harmonious yet still has austere delights to savour. Still has development to come.”
Mark Squires-Wine Advocate 95 Points “The 1957 Colheita Tawny Port was seen before, but it’s worth revisiting in the USA, since it’s a great wine. This is also the new 2015 bottling. It has 127 grams per liter of residual sugar. It is stunning how youthful this is. Lush and rich on opening, it has mature flavors that emerge, easily demonstrating the complexity and concentrated aromatics one expects. Gripping on the finish, this delivers fruit flavor and seems to linger indefinitely. When I first saw this, it was tasted next to even more brilliant Colheitas and a bit overshadowed. On its own, it is even more stunning. It was pretty fine next to some other greats here as well.”

You’ll Be Over The Moon For These High Altitude Nebbiolos!

The super-traditional style will leave lovers of translucent Nebbiolo weak at the knees… Perhaps most importantly, ARPEPE shows just how pedigreed the wines of Valtellina can be.”—Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Everyone wonders the same thing at first, so to begin with let’s answer the question. It stands for Arturo Pelizzatti Perego. For some it’s the enigmatic name that draws them to this winery. For others it’s the striking label art. But most people who come to Arpepe are attracted by the word of mouth.

Located in the “Valtellina Superiore” region of Italy, a gorgeous valley that that nestled between two sets of Alps (the Orobic and Retic ones for all of you Alp lovers) near the Swiss border, with dramatic, sweeping hills straight out of a gothic romance and sub regions with evocative names like Inferno and Paradiso.

The wines are similarly memorable. These are vivid wines that tell the story of their wholly unique terroir.

Ar.Pe.Pe. Buon Consiglio Riserva, Valtellina Superiore Grumello DOCG 2013 750ml $99 special, 13 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95+ Points “One of two late-release wines from Ar. Pe. Pe., the 2013 Valtellina Superiore Grumello Riserva Buon Consiglio is a beautifully light and delicate expression of Nebbiolo with a lean, ruby-tinged appearance. The wine ages to silkiness and extreme suppleness, and I cannot help but notice the unique aromas of toasted hazelnut, mountain flower and balsam herb that rise so delicately from the bouquet. These results are exquisite and ultra delicate, giving the wine a lithe or ethereal personality. What a beauty. Only 6,000 bottles were released.”
Wine Spectator 94 Points “A perfumed red, exuding aromas and flavors of crushed raspberry and pureed strawberry, exotic spice and graphite, dried marjoram and thyme. It’s finely knit, with silky tannins and mouthwatering, citrus peel acidity. A graceful version with a lasting, mineral-laced finish. Drink now through 2028. 500 cases made, 175 cases imported.  –AN”

Ar.Pe.Pe Fiamme Antiche Valtelina Superiore 2017 750ml $59 special, 18 bottles available
Wine Spectator 94 Points “A graceful, mineral-driven red, with seamless integration of the firm, fine-grained tannins and concentrated flavors of ripe raspberry, star anise, Earl Grey and red licorice. Light on its feet, this red boasts complexity and depth. Drink now through 2030. 500 cases made, 150 cases imported.”

Ar.Pe.Pe Inferno Sesto Canto Riserva 2013 750ml $99 special, 9 bottles available
Wine Spectator 93 Points “There’s a lovely juiciness to the crushed black raspberry and strawberry fruit on display in this elegant, medium- to full-bodied red, yet sleek tannins are well-integrated and provide fine definition. Fragrant notes of tea leaf, pomegranate and hot stone chime on the silky finish. Drink now through 2033. 500 cases made, 175 cases imported.  –AN”

Ar.Pe.Pe Sassella Nuova Regina Riserva 2013 750ml $99 special, 4 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 96 Points “Loaded with finesse and energy and still youthfully austere, this linear, structured red offers tart cranberry, blood orange and star anise sensations. A vein of salty mineral provides the backdrop while fine-grained tannins provide elegant structure and support. Racy acidity keeps it balanced. Give it time to fully develop and blossom into even more of a beauty. Drink 2025–2035. -Kerin O’Keefe”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 Points “A release of about 6,000 bottles, the Ar. Pe. Pe. 2013 Valtellina Superiore Riserva Sassella Nuova Regina draws its fruit from terraced vineyards delineated by rocky drywalls. The vines are at least 50 years old and planted in friable metamorphic rock or gneiss shaped by glaciers. This wine is made in a highly traditional manner with extended skin maceration in oak casks, and all the harvest work is done by hand. This is a true beauty with enormous finesse and a deep well of aromatic nuances that center around wild berries, blue flowers and iron ore. The wine is carefully aged with fine and silky tannins. It tastes great, so if you have a bottle you can drink it now or wait longer if that is your pleasure.”

Ar.Pe.Pe Grumello Rocca De Piro Superiore 2017 750ml $59 special, 23 bottles available
Wine Spectator 95 Points “Wine Spectator 95 Points A fresh, focused red, with a subtle yet persistently fragrant thread of tobacco and spices winding through dried cherry and strawberry, tea rose, stone and smoke notes. Reveals supple tannins that firm the creamy, lasting finish. Tightly meshed yet still expressive, this should show well with short-term cellaring. Best from 2024 through 2034. 1,900 cases made, 170 cases imported.”

Ar.Pe.Pe Rosso Di Valtellina 2020 750ml $38 special, 17 bottles available
Winery Notes “100% Nebbiolo from 50-100 year old vines on the lower slopes of the Sassella and Grumello vineyards.”

Ar.Pe.Pe Grumello Sant’antonio Riserva 2013 $99 special, 4 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 95 Points “The 2013 Valtellina Superiore Grumello Riserva Sant’Antonio is a bold, pungent wine. Dark red and purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice race across the palate. A deep, vertical Riserva, the 2013 is very young today, but it is so impressive. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s striking inner perfume, sweetness and sheer pedigree.”

#1 WINE ON JAMES SUCKLING 2023 TOP 100
Laurent Perrier Grand Siecle No. 26, Chanmpagne NV 750ml $249 special, 2 bottles available

James Suckling 100 Points “This is really something. Electric on the palate. The aromas are so complex with sliced fresh and dried ginger, subtle pie crust, tarte tatin and hints of nutmeg with some salted caramel. Toasted bread, too. Always subtle. The palate is full- to medium-bodied yet hemmed-in with a freshness and balance that draws you back. Savory and vibrant. It’s full of energy. Spectacular. Fascinating. Symphonic blend of 2012, 2008 and 2007. 65% of the 2012, 25% of the 2008 and 10% of the 2007. Eight grand cru. Chardonnay 58% and 42% pinot noir. Disgorged February 2023. 10 years on the lees. 7g/L dosage. Drink or hold.”
Janis Robinson 19.5/20 Points “Powerful aroma of orange peel and something in the putty/chalk spectrum. It somehow manages to be both tight yet approachable, dense in terms of flavour concentration yet filigree in terms of texture. As usual, it’s so Chardonnay! Overriding citrus character and quite amazingly long, a mouthful tingling on the palate for minutes not seconds. Enormous finesse. Massive pleasure. This would make the most luxurious aperitif. Michel Fauconnet, having welcomed the new chef de cave in January 2023, must be especially proud of this wine.”

Cult Producer alert! This Côte des Bar producer releases only single-vineyard, single-varietal, single-vintage, zero-dosage Champagnes. Cedric Bouchard features some of the lowest restricted yields in Champagne, and places extra emphasis on picking at the optimum moment. The Côte des Bar itself is partially composed of the same Kimmeridgian soils as Chablis, which gives these a surge an almost electric intenstiy. Think of them as lightning in a bottle!
Cedric Bouchard Roses de Jeanne ‘VV-Cote de Val Vilaine’ Blanc de Noirs, Champagne NV 750ml (2021) $199 special, 6 bottles available
Winery Note 100% “Pinot Noir from the 1.5 hectare lieu-dit of Val Vilaine. 300-500 cases produced annually.”

Chartogne-Taillet Cuvee Orizeaux Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut, Champagne 2012 750ml $219 special, 2 bottles available
Vinous 94 Points “The NV (2012) Extra-Brut Cuvée Orizeaux is Chartogne’s Pinot Noir Champagne from a parcel originally planted in 1961. The Orizeaux manages to somehow be both translucent and deep. Surprisingly bright and focused, the 2012 offers quite a bit of aromatic lift and intensity throughout. White orchard fruit, white flowers and lemon peel are nicely delineated. The flavor profile is more like Chardonnay, while the structure and phenolic impression are, indeed, those of Pinot. What a gorgeous wine this. Disgorged: February 2016. Dosage is 5 grams per Liter.”

Chartogne-Taillet Cuvee Orizeaux Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut, Champagne 2010 750ml $249 special, 3 bottles available

Christophe Baron ‘Les Alouettes’ Brut Nature, Champagne 2016 1.5L $259 special, only 1 bottle available
Antonio Galloni 94 Points “The 2016 Brut Nature Les Alouettes (Magnum) is ample and broad, with a real sense of volume that grows over time. Layered and beautifully resonant, the Alouttes is also the most sensual and immediate of these wines. Even with all of its intensity, the Alouttes is translucent and so expressive, even in the early going. Spice, dried pear, flowers and nutty accents linger. Disgorged: March, 2020.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93+ Points “The most reserved wine in the range is the 2016 Brut Nature Les Alouettes, from a southeast-facing site in Charly-sur-Marne. Unwinding in the glass with scents of citrus zest, apricot, orange oil and pear, framed by hints of wet stones and struck match, it’s medium to full-bodied, tightly wound and chalky, with racy acids and an elegant pinpoint mousse. Interestingly, a magnum tasted in November 2020 was rather more open and expressive than this one, tasted in early 2021.”

Christophe Baron ‘Les Alouettes’ Brut Nature, Champagne 2017 1.5L $259 special, 6 bottles available
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 95 Points “The 2017 Brut Nature Les Alouettes is excellent, bursting with aromas of golden orchard fruit, warm spices, honeycomb, plums and toasted bread. Full-bodied, fleshy and vinous, it’s rich and sapid, with a layered core of fruit, a pretty pinpoint mousse and a long, saline finish. Seamless and complete, this bottling is particularly strong this year.”
Antonio Galloni 95 Points “The 2017 Brut Nature Les Alouettes (Magnum) is the most potent and tightly wound of these three Champagnes from Christophe Baron. It offers up a beguiling mix of graphite, orange confit, dried flowers, earthiness, chamomile and spice, all in a dense, inward style that demands cellaring. The Alouttes shows the more earthy, savory side of Meunier. Disgorged: May, 2021.”
Jeb Dunnuck 93 Points “The 2017 Champagne Les Alouettes is beautiful, and richer, mouth-filling style that should age gracefully. Giving up lots of toasty, nuttiness aromatics, it has a core of green apple fruit, plenty of mid-palate density, bright, almost racy acidity, and a great finish.”

Christophe Baron ‘Les Hautes Blanches Vignes’ Brut Nature, Champagne 2017 1.5L $269 special, 4 bottles available
Antonio Galloni Vinous 95 Points “The 2017 Brut Nature Les Hautes Blanches Vignes (Magnum) is a rich, burnished wine. Deep in color and intensity from tiny yields, the Hautes Blanches is a rich Champagne endowed with notable textural breadth and energy. Orange peel, hazelnut, dried flowers, chamomile, tangerine oil and light oxidative notes build in this powerhouse Meunier. The red fruit character of Meunier is so expressive. This is an especially vinous style, even for Christophe Baron. The Hautes Blanches Vignes is just as much wine as it is Champagne. Disgorged: May 2021.”

Larmandier-Bernier Les Chemins d’Avize Grand Cru Extra Brut, Champagne 2013 750ml $149 special, 9 bottles available
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 96 Points “Revisited from the October 2019 disgorgement, Larmandier-Bernier’s 2013 Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Les Chemins d’Avize continues to show brilliantly, offering up complex aromas of argan oil, fresh apricot and crisp yellow orchard fruit, complemented by hints of fresh walnuts and almond paste. Full-bodied, deep and vinous, it’s layered and elegantly fleshy, with a concentrated core of ripe fruit, racy acids and a long, mineral finish. As I wrote last year, Pierre Larmandier invariably excels in cool, late-growing seasons, so the 2013 vintage was perfectly adapted to his talents.”

Pascal Doquet:

A Treasure in the Côte des Blancs

“It’s the viticulture that makes the difference, not the vinification.” -Pascal Doquet

With an eye towards thoughtful, organic farming, Pascal Doquet epitomizes grower Champagne. Not only does his estate encompass some of the finest terroir in all of Champagne in the illustrious Côte des Blancs, his organic-certified parcels boast significant amounts of old vines. His resulting Champagnes are a magnificent tribute to his masterful and conscientious farming.

Since 1982, Doquet has worked his family’s estate alongside his father. He took over completely in 1995 and began rolling out more environmentally-friendly practices under the French concept of lutte raisonnée. His passion for the vineyards and for his farming methods came to a head in 2004, when his sister forced the break-up of the family estate, Doquet-Jeanmaire, to farm more conventionally. (It was a different time, especially in Champagne, which only recently saw organic and biodynamic farming take off. Even today, only one Grande Marque, Roederer, boasts significant biodynamic holdings.) No longer retrained by other voices, Doquet named his estate after himself and began converting his holdings to certified organic. Today, he has nine hectares of vines in the villages of Vertus, Le Mont Aimé and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger.

Doquet’s vines are farmed with cover crops and managed by hand or by ultra-light tractor so as to not compact the chalk and silex (flint) soils. In the fields, he limits use of copper, allowed in organic farming but controversial since it accumulates in the soil. Grapes are hand-harvested and rigorously sorted before undergoing a gentle pressing in the winery. Fermentation occurs in enamel-lined tanks or neutral oak using indigenous yeast with extended aging on the gross lees. Doquet limits the use of sulfur, and the wines naturally undergo malolactic fermentation.

Pascal Doquet ‘Arpege’ Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Extra Brut (2017-base) NV 750ml $69 special, 28 bottles in stock now
Importer note
“The chardonnay for “Arpège” comes from Vertus, Villeneuve and Mont Aimé—the grapes that are not in the Coeur de Terroir series. There is substantial reserve wine in the blend, preserved in enamel tanks to maintain freshness. Aromas of spice, black tea and pear dominate the flinty-silex soils from the Mont Aimé and lend smokiness and depth to the structure.”

Pascal Doquet ‘Arpege’ Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Extra Brut (2015-base) NV 750ml $59 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Importer note
“Arpège is now the basic, non-vintage wine at the estate, with the “Horizon” bottling now being firmly established in other markets… “Arpège” is in a different league; it’s finer in tone and more complex. The chardonnay comes from Vertus, Villeneuve and Mont Aimé—the grapes that are not in the Coeur de Terroir series… There is substantial reserve wine in the blend, preserved in enamel tanks to maintain freshness. Aromas of spice, black tea and pear dominate the flinty-silex soils from the Mont Aimé and lend smokiness and depth to the structure.”

Pascal Doquet Grand Cru Le Mesnil-Sur-Oger Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut 2009 750ml $149 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Pascal is fortunate to have some very old parcels in the mid-slope of this renowned Grand Cru village. His grandfather consolidated nearly a hectare of vines in Champ d’Alouettes, of which Pascal owns 60% of the original holdings. He also has very old vines in Les Migraines planted in 1929, as well as Chétillons, Coullemets and Finciarts. From these sites, Doquet selects the best lots and vinifies them for the Coeur de Terroir range. Aged for 12 years sur latte, this wine was disgorged with a mere 2 grams MCR. It’s Pascal’s most complex wine, showing ginger, anise and blueberry.”
