By many counts, the Loire Valley is France’s most diverse region for wine, home to a plethora of winemaking styles, a wide range of grape varieties, and a multitude of terroirs. Within the Valley is the appellation of Saumur, which encapsulates Saumur-Champigny and the famous communes of Brézé and Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg. Here Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc rule, offering up aromatic wines of great finesse. Some of the greatest estates in the area are pioneers of biodynamics and sustainable farming, and their wines express the same thoughtfulness and care seen in the vineyards.

Domaine des Closiers is a historic estate near the center of the Saumur-Champigny appellation in Parnay. Purchased in 2018 by enologist Anatole de la Brosse, who, along with Nady Foucault of Clos Rougeard, crafts some of the finest wines in the region.
 
Chateau Yvonne is a small estate revitalized in 1997. Today, it is farmed organically and biodynamically by Matthieu Vallée. Everything is done manually in the vineyard and with as little intervention as possible in the winery, with native yeast fermentation, minimal SO2, and bottling unfunded and unfiltered. 
 
Domaine Guiberteau’s wines are pure, pungently wonderful expressions of Chenin and Cab Franc, somehow managing to be wild and alive while remaining crystal clear in their delivery. From the entry level Saumur Rouge (quite likely the best introductory wine you’ll find) to the pinnacle of his Saumur Blanc Brézé, the purity of the wines is remarkable. We can only hope Domaine Guiberteau doesn’t shoot out of reach.
 
When a winemaker starts generating the amount of charge that Romain Guiberteau has built in such a short amount of time, our ears perk up, and we take notice. Consider that Dani Foucault of Clos Rougeard took so much interest in Romain that he regularly insisted that visitors also go to Guiberteau to taste. Young Romain came back from an uninspired law career to take over the farming of his family’s 14.5 hectares. The prize of this acreage was 7 hectares on a hill by the name of Brézé, considered by some as the best terroir in the entire Loire. The wines are pure, pungently wonderful expressions of the two grapes, somehow managing to be wild and alive while remaining crystal clear in their delivery. From the entry level Saumur Rouge (quite likely the best introductory wine you’ll find) to the pinnacle of his Saumur Blanc Brézé, the purity of the wines is remarkable.
 
Thierry Germain is a heralded producer first introduced to the US by importer Kermit Lynch. Championing biodynamic farming practices, eschewing new oak and long élevage in large barrels, these are transparent and classically-styled wines.
 
Arnaud Lambert is a fan favorite of the shop, offering delicious wines at highly affordable price points. Based in Brézé, one of Saumur’s most coveted neighborhoods, Lambert crafts wines from here, where the wines are full of minerals, and Saint-Cyr-En-Bourg, which offers up more powerful and opulent wines. Lambert is a master at letting the terroir shine through. The whites have elegance, texture and poise that puts them at home with any dry Chenin from the region, at significant discounts to big names like Clos Rougeard, while the reds offer that classic combination of Saumur weight and polish.

Monsieur de la Brosse’s first vintage at Domaine des Closiers was the following year of 2019. Monsieur de la Brosse’s les Closiers bottling is his entry level wine, aged in tank for six to eight months prior to bottling and crafted to be more immediately accessible than his other two red wine cuvées, les Coudraies and les Trezelliêres. The combination of the extremely high quality of the wines here and Nady Foucault’s participation on a consulting basis have quickly given the estate the moniker of the “next Clos Rougeard”. The 2020 les Closiers bottling comes in at an even thirteen percent octane in this warm summer and offers up a beautifully refined nose of red and black cherries, tobacco leaf, chalky soil tones, cigar ash and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and seamlessly balanced, with a good core, fine transparency and grip and a long, moderately tannic and complex finish. This is a lovely bottle that is approachable out of the blocks, but really deserves at least a few years’ worth of bottle age to allow its secondary layers of complexity to emerge. 92+”

John Gilman 96 points “This is my first taste of Domaine des Closiers top bottling, les Trezellières, which is made from a parcel of old vines and given fully two years aging in barrel, with somewhere between ten and twenty percent of the casks new. The 2019 les Trezellières is beautifully deep and refined aromatically, delivering scents of black cherries, cassis, Cuban cigar wrapper, a very complex base of soil, a touch of Cheval Blanc-like menthol, a gentle dollop of tree bark, cedar and a topnote of cigar smoke. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, elegant and rock solid at the core, with great focus and complex, superb soil undertow, fine grained tannins and a very long, pure and classy finish. The small percentage of new oak gives this wine more refinement than the les Coudraies bottling, but because it is no more than twenty percent new oak. The wood influence is far more subtle out of the blocks than in Clos Rougeard’s Le Bourg bottling, which is the closest comparison I can think of for this brilliant young Saumur-Champigny. Give this beautiful wine plenty of time in the cellar to properly resolve its tannins and completely blossom! 2031-2085”

The 2019 opens with a pure and refreshing as well as spicy/floral nose with dark fruit and fresh lemon aromas as well as stony notes and a nice reduction. Wonderfully untamed. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, fresh and silky-textured Saumur with a stimulating salty, round and fruity finish. At this young age, charm is not its greatest talent, but with bottle age, this will be a terrific Saumur rouge for many dishes and opportunities. I like this tight and traditional, straightforward style that might be a bit unpleasant at this early stage but will reward those with patience. 13.5% alcohol”

Sourced from a clos with a 50-centimeter layer of sandy loam on calcareous rocks, this is a pure, fresh and elegant, tightly structured and grippy Cabernet from vines almost 35 years old. Wine Advocate 93 points “From an east-facing 1.7-hectare plot (Les Perriéres) on top of the SCB hill, the 2018 Saumur Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg Coulée de St-Cyr opens with a deep, pure, yet intense and complex bouquet of ripe fruits intertwined with notes of crushed limestone and popcorn. Pure, refined and salty on the palate, this is a full-bodied, quite rich yet tight, fresh and persistently salty Chenin with fine yet sustainable tannins and a lot of nervy lime juice, salt and tension. This is a fantastic Chenin from limestone terroir (topped with a 50-centimeter layer of clay and salt) that is normally used for Cabernet Franc. Vouvray: one of the world’s most complex, age-worthy, terroir-driven, aromatically intense, and praised white wines. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more wildly expressive and flexible grape than the Chenin Blanc that composes practically all white wines from Vouvray. Chenin from Vouvray is esteemed for its profundity at all sweetness levels, from bone-dry (Sec), lightly- to medium-sweet (Demi-Sec), and dessert style (Moelleux).
 
Granted AOC status in 1936, this commune in the Loire Valley is home to two landmark estates that have endured since those early days, producing wonderful and empirically age-worthy wines not to be overlooked: Domaine Huet and Philippe Foreau, two of the finest producers within this glorious region in France.
 
Domaine Huet and Philippe Foreau offer the pinnacle of quality for the appellation (and therefore some of the best values in truly world-class wine) though their styles and approaches differ. So, how to choose between these two fabulous estates? Well, no real need as on our subscriber-sale, you’re welcome to mix and match between the two. But let’s explore the two.
 
Domaine Huet is the most sought-after Vouvray producer, at least according to Wine-Searcher data. This is one of France’s pioneers in biodynamic viticulture, modernizing only in the most conscientious way. Today, horses still plough between the rows of their three vineyards, considered some of the greatest in all of the Loire. These vineyards have very distinct personalities worth exploring. Essentially, Le Haut-Lieu is their most approachable, offering softer and younger-drinking wines. Le Mont is dense, chock-full of minerals (or should we say chalk-full?), and the most age-worthy, per insiders. Clos du Bourg lies somewhere in between the others in terms of youthful approachability and minerality. Gaston Huet, the estate’s famous winemaker for 55 years, considered this to be the greatest vineyard in Vouvray.
 
In the winery, the recipe remains relatively simple. Fermentation takes place half in stainless steel, half in old oak, without malolactic fermentation. After only six months, the wines are bottled and then laid to age in a cellar dug from tuffeau rock, no air conditioning required. From here the Huet work is done: the rest is up to nature, and what eventually tastes like divine intervention. Few producers anywhere in the world make better off-dry to sweet white wines than Domaine Huet, except perhaps Philippe Foreau.
 
Just down the narrow, winding street from Domaine Huet is Domaine du Clos Naudin, known better by the name of its third-generation winemaker, Philippe Foreau. Foreau’s grandfather founded the estate in 1923. It is a small domaine with about 11 acres of Chenin Blanc in the northeast corner of Vouvray (and entirely in the Le Mont terroir). The vineyards, the main two being Les Perruches and Les Ruettes, hold vines that average over 45 years in age in argile-silex (clay and flint) soil. The estate’s traditionally-made wines offer astonishingly aromatics with a remarkable ability to age. 
 
Stylistically, the estates differ most noticeably in the glass. Foreau crafts wines with a razor-sharp edge and more intense minerality at any given sweetness level compared to the rounder, richer wines of Huet. As a result, we often find that they require more time to come around in the cellar. Huet offers more opulent and flamboyant wines that are packed with fruit—they’re easy to love and the complexity is obvious, right in front of you to see. Both estates offer wines that will age for decades, especially in their demi-sec and moelleux styles.

The residual sugar of seven grams per liter gives a beautiful exotic fruitiness and balance, the fine tannins a good structure. The 2016 is truly a pleasant Vouvray that already drinks perfectly.”
John Gilman 90 points “The 2016 Le Haut Lieu Sec from Domaine Huet is a pretty wine and much less powerful than the 2015 version. The wine offers up lovely youthful aromatics of quince, tart pineapple, chalky minerality, orange peel, lanolin, a whisper of the honeycomb to come with bottle age and a gently floral top note. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied and nicely detailed, with good, but not great depth at the core, sound acids and very nice length and grip on the nascently complex finish. I like the shape of this wine very much, which does not have quite as much in reserve as many recent vintages of this bottling, but which has plenty of complexity and really impeccable balance. It may well age like the 1988 vintage here. 2017-2045.”

With more aeration, the Le Mont gets more and more intense and complex but also, tannic-wise, more wild. The 2020 has great tension, energy and grip and is highly promising.”

John Gilman 98 points “I have been looking forward to the release of Domaine Huët’s 2015 Cuvée Constance ever since I tasted a year ago the rest of the stunning range of wines produced here in the vintage. It is a great vintage for Domaine Huët and the Cuvée Constance is everything one could hope for from the confluence of this great estate and a legendary vintage. The wine is still very youthful, but its ultimate brilliance is very easy to see, as the wine wafts from the glass in a celestial constellation of orange, fresh apricot, incipient tea leaves, a nice touch of soil, hints of lanolin, orange peel, barley sugar and a hint of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is pure, full and nascently complex, with laser-like focus, a bottomless core, great acids and marvelous balance on the very, very long, zesty and energetic finish. This is still a very young wine and will need years to start to show its secondary and tertiary layers of complexity, but they are lurking here and in the fullness of time, this will be breathtaking in its beauty. Brown-spiced pear liqueur and quince preserves dominate the proceedings – wreathed in perfume of freesia and lily – and there are buoyancy and elegance, despite viscosity, enormous richness of texture and residual sweetness, that indeed point to the magic nobility rot can convey. Its sense of lift – when combined with luscious, still juicy suggestions of grapefruit and blood orange familiar from the corresponding demi-sec – wards off any risk of palate fatigue. Mysterious botrytis manifestations of stale bread, truffle, and white raisin emerge from the empty glass. This extraordinary achievement will stand with such past great Foreau moelleux reserves as 2005, 2003, and 1989-90 and is likely to merit 30 or more years of consideration. In direct comparison, what strikes one about the 2005 today is its more obvious sense of botrytis and its slightly diminished sense of acidity and lift. Wines so declared frequently have levels of residual sugar that are in excess of 150 grams of residual sugar.
