Pascal Doquet 4-2-24

Grower Champagne On Sale Now!

“It’s the viticulture that makes the difference, not the vinification.” -Pascal Doquet

With an eye towards thoughtful, organic farming, Pascal Doquet epitomizes grower Champagne. Not only does his estate encompass some of the finest terroir in all of Champagne in the illustrious Côte des Blancs, his organic-certified parcels boast significant amounts of old vines. His resulting Champagnes are a magnificent tribute to his masterful and conscientious farming.

Since 1982, Doquet has worked his family’s estate alongside his parents. He took over completely in 1995 and began rolling out more environmentally-friendly practices under the French concept of lutte raisonnée. His passion for the vineyards and for his sustainable farming methods came to a head in 2004, when his sister forced the break-up of the family estate, Doquet-Jeanmaire, to farm more conventionally. (It was a different time, especially in Champagne, which only recently saw organic and biodynamic farming take off. Even today, only one Grande Marque, Roederer, boasts significant biodynamic holdings.) No longer restrained by other voices, Doquet named his estate after himself and began converting his holdings to certified organic. Today, he has nine hectares of vines in the villages of Vertus, Le Mont Aimé and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger.

Doquet’s vines are farmed with cover crops and managed by hand or by ultra-light tractor so as to not compact the chalk and silex (flint) soils. In the fields, he limits the use of copper, which is allowed in organic farming but considered controversial since it accumulates in the soil. Grapes are hand-harvested and rigorously sorted before undergoing a gentle pressing in the winery. Fermentation occurs in enamel-lined tanks or neutral oak using indigenous yeast with extended aging on the gross lees. Doquet limits the use of sulfur, and the wines naturally undergo malolactic fermentation.

Though the wines are rarely reviewed, most recent notes can be found from Stephan Reinhardt of the Wine Advocate in 2018. Reinhardt wrote up the 2006 releases and their accompanying NVs. Much of his prose is dedicated to descriptions of the mineral character of the wine, with repeated use of terms such as saline, chalky, iodine, flinty, or crystalline. While rich in mineral notes, these wines are not austere. Instead, they deliver generous layers of fruit and leesy character balanced by refreshing elegance.

These are grower Champagnes in the truest sense of the term, strikingly beautiful, extremely limited, and on sale now.

“The wines of Pascal Doquet burst with energy and verve and deliver mineral-laden, multi-layered expressions of his terroirs.  These are wines for people looking to experience the scintillating flavors of the Côte-des-Blancs ‘sans maquillage’ (without makeup).” -Schatzi Wines

Pascal Doquet ‘Arpege’ Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Brut NV (2015) 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 1 bottle in stock now

“Arpège is now the basic, non-vintage wine at the estate, with the “Horizon” bottling now being firmly established in other markets. “Horizon” hails from the Côte du Pertois, south-east of Chalons and east of the Côte de Sézanne. It is a parcel that Pascal’s father planted in 1971. “Arpège” is in a different league; it’s finer in tone and more complex. The chardonnay comes from Vertus, Villeneuve and Mont Aimé—the grapes that are not in the Coeur de Terroir series. The assemblage is 50% 2011, 50% reserve wine. It was bottled in May, 2013 and disgorged March, 2016 with 3.5 grams dosage MCR. There is substantial reserve wine in the blend, preserved in enamel tanks to maintain freshness. Aromas of spice, black tea and pear dominate the flinty-silex soils from the Mont Aimé and lend smokiness and depth to the structure.”

Pascal Doquet ‘Arpege’ Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Brut NV (2017) 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 18 bottles in stock now
Blend: 100% Chardonnay – 61% wines of the year 2017 and 39% wines from a reseve perpetuelle started in 2012, aged in oak barrels, intergrating each year around half of wines from the last harvest.

Pascal Doquet ‘Champs Libres’ Blanc de Blancs Brut NV (2018-base) 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 20 bottles in stock now

Pascal Doquet Grand Cru Le Mesnil-Sur-Oger Blanc de Blancs Brut 2009 750ml Displayed Price: $149, that’s $141.55 at 5% off and $134.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Pascal is fortunate to have some very old parcels in the mid-slope of this renowned Grand Cru village. His grandfather consolidated nearly a hectare of vines in Champ d’Alouettes, of which Pascal owns 60% of the original holdings. He also has very old vines in Les Migraines planted in 1929, as well as Chétillons, Coullemets and Finciarts. From these sites, Doquet selects the best lots and vinifies them for the Coeur de Terroir range. Aged for 12 years sur latte, this wine was disgorged with a mere 2 grams MCR. It’s Pascal’s most complex wine, showing ginger, anise and blueberry.”

Pascal Doquet Champ d’Alouettes Grand Cru Extra Brut 2004 750ml Displayed Price: $179, that’s $170.05 at 5% off and $161.10 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now

Importer note
“The Mont Aimé lieu-dit is east of Vertus and faces due south. Even so, it is a cooler microclimate than Pascal’s parcels in Le Mesnil and Vertus and ripening here can happen a week later. Previous vintages were fermented in tank to support the racy, linear style of the wine, but as things evolve, Pascal now ferments roughly half in neutral barrel and half in enamel lined stainless steel tanks, which brings out a cool blueberry and smoky characteristic common to flinty, silex soils.”

April Fool’s Close-Out Sale 4-1-24

Our Best-Ever Sale On Our Already Discounted Close-Out Wines

(No Joke!)

You thought today would be a day of cleaning up pastel-colored plastic grass, settling down sugar-amped kids, and suffering through toothpaste-frosted cupcakes. Not on our watch. It’s time for a little celebration for the adults, and we’re not kidding around, folks.

Today may be April Fool’s but our sale on our Close-Out wines is no joke: in fact, it’s our best yet. We’ve dug deeper than ever to give you the best pricing on some of the hottest wines available.

Wait a minute, what exactly are our Close-Out wines? Why, it’s over two hundred twenty different bottlings from dozens of producers that we have slashed the prices on. These aren’t your average end-of-bin closeouts: these include some of the hottest producers we stock and some of the most sought-after cult wines we offer. That includes names like Cayuse and Cameron, 98-point wines like 2004 Benjamin Romeo’s 2004 La Vina de Andres Romeo and Bruno Giacosa’ 2019 Barbaresco Asili, and some of our most popular (and budget-friendly) wines like Caruso e Minini’s Perricone and Ameztoi’s Rubentis. And those are just from page one!

Why would we cut prices on these gems in the first place? Well, we’re just as sick as you are of seeing prices climb ever higher. Inflation sucks. While we might not have much sway over monetary policy, we can help you fit a few more joyful luxuries into your budget and cellar.

While the bad jokes and mean tricks of April 1st will (fortunately) just last the day, our April Fool’s Close-Out Sale will last for three. But, don’t foolishly miss out on this sale.

With 223 options to choose from, it’ll be easy to hit the max discount. So, leave the candy for the kids while you fill your basket with wine.

Ulysses Vineyard, Oakville, Napa Valley 2018 750ml Was $169, Displayed Price: $145, that’s $137.75 at 5% off and $130.50 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 99 points
“Just about pure perfection and the finest wine I’ve tasted from this address, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon yet includes smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all from a site just north of Dominus. This deep, inky hued beauty offers up a beautiful, full-bodied, richly textured, and incredibly concentrated style that carries ample black and blue fruit as well as notes of crushed stone, scorched earth, graphite, and lead pencil. It has the focused, structured style of the 2018 vintage and is going to benefit from 4-6 years (if not a decade) of bottle age and will be a 30+ year wine.”
James Suckling 98 points “Aromas of terra cotta, chocolate and hazelnut with iron and ink. Dusty. Full-bodied and round. Layered. Flamboyant and juicy. Rather soft and gorgeous. Some walnut and chocolate at the end. Persistent. Always there. Drinkable now, but will age wonderfully.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points “The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is the best wine off Christian Moueix’s Oakville ranch so far. Deep, creamy and generous, the 2018 captures the unqiue blend of fruit in a savoriness that is typical of the southern sector of Oakville where cooling winds from the south lend palpable freshness and vivacity to the vines. Black fruit, chocolate, spice, lavender and new leather are some of the many notes that build into the sumptuous finish.”

Duclaux Cote Rotie Maison Rouge 2018 750ml Was $79, Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 19 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 96 points
“From arguably the most famous lieu-dit in the southern portion of the appellation, the Duclaux brothers’ 2018 Cote Rotie Maison Rouge is a showstopper. Scents of violets, stone fruit, anise-like spice and mixed berries combine to create a complex nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is concentrated yet supremely silky, smooth and charming, ending long and elegant. It’s a superb example of the generally softer, more elegant style found around Tupin et Semons.”
Jeb Dunnuck 96 points “The flagship is the 2018 Côte Rôtie Maison Rouge, which comes from the southern end of the appellation, where the soils are finer and lighter in color. This cuvée is all Syrah and was brought up in 40% new oak. The 2018 is a rich, powerful wine by this cuvée’s standards and has a deeper ruby hue as well as a ripe, powerful nose of darker red and black fruits, bouquet garni, dried flowers, graphite, and lots of obvious minerality. Beautifully balanced, medium to full-bodied, and as seamless as they come, this is a classy, serious Côte Rôtie that needs 2-4 years of bottle age and will evolve gracefully for 20 years or more.”

Domaine Matrot La Piece Sous Le Bois, Blagny Premier Cru, Cote de Beaune 2018 750ml Was $79, Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Wine & Spirits 93 points
“This pinot noir grows in the same block as the chardonnay vines for Matrot’s Meursault-Blagny 1er Cru, high up the hill, at the border with Puligny. The thin soils leave the vines in close contact with limestone, providing a wine with buzzing energy and a delicate frame. This is a beautiful, old-fashioned Burgundy, its scent parallel to equally old-fashioned roses, its sleek raspberry and black-cherry flavors lasting with textural grace. The silken weave draws you into a wine that fells completely integrated, lovely to drink now and over the next five years.”

Anna Lee C. Ijima-Wine Enthusiast 94 points
“While the nose is subtle, the palate of this powerful Pinot Noir is lavish, with sun-kissed blackberry and black-plum flavors. Generous and weighty in mouthfeel, it’s structured by firm, bristling tannins and a vibrant lift of acidity. The forward fruit is charming young but the wine should gain complexity and finesse through 2035 and hold further.”

Remoissenet Pere & Fils Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits 2011 750ml Was $249, Displayed Price: $219, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93+ points
“The 2011 Chapelle-Chambertin is not lacking in personality, that much is obvious. A savory, almost wild Burgundy, the 2011 Chapelle is laced with dried herbs, tobacco, black cherries and cured meats are some of the notes that blossom in the glass. It will be interesting to see where the 2011 goes; will it always remain a bit gamy, or will it find a bit more finesse in bottle?”

Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Crau, Rhone 2018 1.5L Was $199, Displayed Price: $179, that’s $170.05 at 5% off and $161.10 at 10% off, 12 magnums in stock now
James Suckling 96 points
“Traditionally dominated by clairette (45%) and grenache blanc (30%), then roussanne and bourboulenc. The vines average 50+ years and there’s a very restrained nose with dialed-back white-pear and chalk aromas with dried flowers, too. The palate has a super fresh, zippy feel and a long, juicy and attractive core of fresh, salty minerals. The balance is innate and very fluid. Drink or hold.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “A nice throwback style, with a range of dried lavender and rosemary notes peeking out from a cedar-framed core of mulled cherry, blood orange and plum fruit. Features warm stone, licorice root and tobacco leaf accents that fill in through the energetic finish. A wine that’s very confident in its terroir. Best from 2024 through 2038. 2,495 cases imported. — JM”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 94-96 points “The final blend of the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape La Crau will include 60% to 65% Grenache, 15% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, with the remainder Cinsault. Boasting complex scents of roses, black tea, raspberries and cherries on the nose, it follows that up with a full-bodied palate that’s silky and airy in texture yet flavorful and tremendously long on the finish. It fits perfectly with the Brunier’s stated goal of pursuing elegance.”

Castello di Meleto ‘Trebbio’, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, Tuscany DOCG 2018 750ml Was $51.90, Displayed Price: $44.50, that’s $42.28 at 5% off and $40.05 at 10% off, 19 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Here’s a new submission from the stunning Castello di Meleto, which has stone walls and towers in Gaiole in Chianti. The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Trebbio is a terrific discovery. Made with all Sangiovese from a single vineyard, this wine offers fruit brightness, balance and evident mineral definition. These results are linear and sharp, and the fruit is slightly more vibrant here compared to the Poggiarso. Only 3,300 bottles were produced.”

Paolo Scavino Ravera, Barolo DOCG, Piedmont 2018 750ml Was $69, Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 93 points
“Moving over to Novello, the Paolo Scavino 2018 Barolo Ravera is slightly more simplistic in this vintage with a tart cherry element that opens loud over the bouquet. You might also notice crushed white pepper, salty limestone and crushed earth. The wine remains subtle in texture with silky tannins and medium weight. Some 6,500 bottles were made.”
James Suckling 93 points “Compact and really focused, with red berries, dried porcini and brighter floral notes. Medium-bodied with a relatively light but firm tannin framework. The flavors remain enticing and fresh. The lighter overall structure reflects the vintage, but there’s room for expansion here, given time. Try from 2024.”

Rocca di Montegrossi Vin Santo del Chianti Classico, Tuscany 2009 375ml Was $89, Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 22 half-bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The 2009 Vin Santo is a rich, exotic wine, as it always is. Readers will find one of the richest most intense Vin Santos being made today. Plush, tropical and ample in feel, Rocca di Montegrossi’s Vin Santo is bold and racy to the core. The 350 grams of residual sugar leave the wine with tremendous textural plushness.”

Salvioni Cerbaiola Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2017 750ml Was $199, Displayed Price: $169, that’s $160.55 at 5% off and $152.10 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino La Cerbaiola grows in intensity in the glass, with delicate aromas that are especially floral and light in character. Instead of blackberry or blackcurrant, this elegant wine delivers cassis and cranberry. Instead of overt spice, you get licorice, balsam herb and camphor ash. The Salvioni house style is ethereal and light, and although that extra vintage ripeness and concentration does register on the palate, farming and winemaking at this estate puts an emphasis on acidity over power or structure. These choices were particularly important in 2017.”

Tenuta San Leonardo Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT, Trentino-Alto Adige 2015 750ml Was $69, Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97+ points
“The 2015 San Leonardo pours forth with a beautiful velvety appearance and sultry dark garnet color. This wine shows a lot of life and dark fruit purity with black plum, blackberry, cassis and tarry prune. There is a delightful note of black pepper that is specific to this warm and sunny vintage. The fruit shows softer and richer concentration compared to past vintages and more pulpy density that gives this edition a bigger profile in terms of mouthfeel. Production is 75,000 bottles. San Leonardo is a wine made for long aging, but the nice thing about this vintage is that the bouquet remains quite accessible at this young age. Nevertheless, I’d still suggest keeping this bottle in your cellar so that it can calmly finish its evolution.”
Decanter 96 points “San Leonardo is the iconic wine of the estate, and one of the most celebrated Bordeaux blends of Italy with its cool climate profile. The warm 2015 vintage doesn’t differ from the leaner style of the wine (compared to other Bordeaux blends), which is a good benchmark to understand the sense of elegance here. The nose sees purity of fruit (cassis) typical of Trentino Alto Adige, finely melted with leather and green pepper aromas. If you dislike wines with a slightly herbal aroma is understandable but here this touch adds another layer and the wine on the palate shines with silky, super elegant tannins. Refreshing and amazingly savoury, it plays well even with brasato or other powerful dishes of red meat. Drinking Window 2020 – 2040.”
Eric Guido-Vinous 95 points “The 2015 San Leonardo is a classic in the making. The bouquet is wonderfully perfumed with peppery florals, mixing tart cherry and blueberry with white smoke, hints of graphite and shaved cedar. Silky textures race across a core of juicy acids and minerals, making for a ripe yet cool-toned and pleasurably tactile expression. Youthful tannins slowly make themselves known toward the close. Long, structured and spicy, the 2015 finishes with a crescendo of tart blue and black fruits, tapering off to notes of subtly sweet spice. As good as this is today, it will only get better over time. That said, it doesn’t appear that this is going to shut down anytime in the immediate future, so it’s certainly worth checking on a bottle or two before forgetting the rest in your cellar.”

Tua Rita Redigaffi Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2010 750ml Was $299, Displayed Price: $269, that’s $255.55 at 5% off and $242.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97 points
“The 2010 Redigaffi is even more impressive with seamless integration of ripe fruit and oak spice that meet each other perfectly in the middle. It soars to new heights of elegance and power, imparting beautiful tones of black fruit, polished river stone, bacon fat and black pepper as it makes its steady ascent. The mouthfeel is fleshy and generous and there is plenty of backbone here to carry the wine forward throughout the years. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2038. Stefano Frascolla and Tua Rita have almost single-handedly put Suvereto on Italys winemaking map. His latest releases are nothing short of spectacular.’
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “I am struck by how light on its feet the 2010 Redigaffi is for such a big wine. Dark red cherries, tobacco, licorice, smoke and anise all flesh out as this layered wine opens up in the glass. Over time, the wine’s intense salinity emerges, adding energy, drive and polish. Hints of dark cherry, plum and smoke reappear on the vibrant finish. Readers will find much to admire in the superb 2010. To be sure, the 2010 is less outwardly opulent than is often the case with Redigaffi, but there is no denying the wine’s absolute beauty.”

Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Kabinett, Mosel 2019 750ml Was $29, Displayed Price: $22.50, that’s $21.38 at 5% off and $20.25 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93 points
“The 2019 Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Kabinett is pure and flinty on the pure, elegant, terroir-driven nose. Piquant and crystalline on the palate, this is a crunchy and crispy, well-concentrated and nicely phenolic Schlossberg with juicy fruit but a crystalline and refined finish. Very long and stimulatingly salty. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.”
John Gilman 92 points “The 2019 Schlossberg Kabinett from Selbach-Oster is really a very pretty example of the vintage, but this is more Spätlese in terms of weight and breadth of shoulder than classical Kabinett. However, this takes away nothing from the charm here on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet delivering a lovely blend of white cherry, white peach, a touch of wild yeasts, a refined base of slate, bee pollen and a topnote of apple blossoms. On the palate the wine is medium-full, complex and nicely filigreed, with good acids, fine focus and grip and a long, complex and very nicely balanced finish. Think of this as a hybrid between Kabinett and Spätlese, but with personality to burn! 2020-2040+.”

James Suckling 93 points
“A dense, compact malbec with intense, blackberry and wet-earth character. Full body. Creamy texture. Tangy and delicious on the finish. Ends with green tobacco and tar. Excellent. Drink now.”
Brazos Wines importer note “This is 100% hand harvested Malbec is from a single vineyard in Agrelo, Lujan de Cuyo. The wine is dark with notes of dark fruits like plum, raisin and blackberry pie. The supple tannins and hint of oak lead to a round, smooth finish wrapped in caramel and walnuts.”

Not all of us can afford Raveneau. Hell, not many of us can even find it if we wanted to! But that doesn’t mean we have to compromise, because savvy drinkers like us are well informed on the delicacy of Defaix’s Chablis. Daniel-Etienne Defaix has vineyard holdings in some of the top premier cru sites across the region and his wines are utterly unique in the fact that he ages them in bottle until they’ve reached total perfection. Aged chablis is like nothing else you’ve tasted before and Defaix’s are the purest expression of Chardonnay without the masking influence of oak. We’ve got multiple bottlings available today that are worth gobbling up!

Producer Background

The Defaix line is one of the oldest wine-producing families in Chablis, possessing thirty hectares of vineyards, predominantly situated in premier and grand cru locations. However, Danny, the proprietor, selects only the finest parcels each year to designate as cru-level, opting to classify the remaining ones as villages. He ages these cru-level wines in tanks for eight to ten years, allowing for a slow natural settling process that obviates the need for filtration.

Defaix’s unique approach goes beyond lengthy aging. He exclusively relies on indigenous yeasts in his fermentations—a rare approach which results in fermentations lasting between three and six weeks, in contrast to the four-to-six days typically required with commercial varieties. Malolactic fermentation, occurring in a very cold cellar, occasionally extends over two years. Defaix favors prolonged contact with lees, primarily through gentle stirring during the initial two years and sporadically thereafter. Moreover, Defaix prioritizes patience over common practices like fining or filtration, allowing ample time for the lees to settle naturally. The result is a chardonnay expression that offers richness from lees contact rather oak, pronounced minerality and complexity from native yeast and long elevage, and precise expression of the oyster shell terroir of Chablis.

Available Defaix Wines:

Domaine Daniel-Etienne Defaix Les Lys, Chablis Premier Cru 2010 750ml $59 special, 11 bottles available
Producer Notes: “Les Lys is a tiny five-hectare cru of which Defaix owns three and a half hectares, all in a southeast-facing section called Clos du Roi—effectively a monopole of the domaine. Its poor soils of pure Kimmeridgian limestone produce perhaps the most complete and distinctive wine in Defaix’s cellar. Combining some of the power of the “Vaillon” with the chalky intensity of the “Côte de Lechet,” it ratchets up the aromatic complexity of the previous two, yet comes across as pure and harmonious. The palate offers ample richness, yet a sense of tension keeps it from feeling opulent, and the chiseled finish offers a strong sensation of dry extract.”

Domaine Daniel-Etienne Defaix Lechet, Chablis Premier Cru 2010 750ml $59 special, 12 bottles available
Importer Notes: In fascinating contrast to “Vaillon”, Defaix’s “Côte de Lechet” is a master class in mineral precision. This remarkably steep site (a 45% gradient) with very poor soil produces a wine that Danny describes as embodying “the real, true mineral expression of Chablis.” Freshly blasted chalk dominates the nose, with notes of lemon, honey, and fresh herbs lurking underneath; still, this is a wine of minerality first and foremost. The family owns a 3.5-hectare parcel of 45-year-old vines in this distinctive cru, most of which are planted within a parcel known as the Clos des Moines.

Domaine Daniel-Etienne Defaix Vaillon, Chablis Premier Cru 2010 750ml $59 special, 8 bottles available
Producer Notes: “Grapes are planted in a steeply sloped (28 degrees) hill in the original parcel of Vaillon with a southeast exposure. The soil here is particularly influenced by iron deposits which yields a wine of fruit and spice and great density. The Vaillons is influenced by notes of soubois and, although lacking the elegance of its two companion 1er Crus, it is often the most generous wine of the domaine. The average age of the vines is 45 years.”

Domaine Daniel-Etienne Defaix Vielles Vignes Chablis 2020 750ml $39 special, 30 bottles available
Winemaker Notes: “This cuvée is sourced from vines the age of which is between 45 and 70 years. A wine of exceptional concentration for a village level appellation, this wine is always a true expression of the kimmeridgian soils that make Chablis so distinctive. Aged for thirty months before release, Defaix’s old vines Chablis is richly dense with a classic pierre a fusil bouquet and long mineral-infused finish.”

Per usual, until 9AM PST on Wednesday we’ll have these wines on discount for you and I’d recommend placing an order early before they get gobbled up.

JJ Prum: Reference Point Mosel Wines 3-30-24

On Sale Now!

“Few estates in the world can claim to have maintained the highest quality standards uninterrupted for half a century and more. Joh Jos Prüm… is one estate that can.” –Stuart Pigott, The Wine Atlas of Germany

Manfred and Katarina Prüm make some of the finest and most sought-after wines of the middle-Mosel. These reference-point Mosel Rieslings are some of the most profound and age-worthy white wines in the world. No other producer in the middle Mosel is as respected or collectible. These are always some of the finest and longest-lived wines in Germany. These white wines have near-unparalleled consistency in aging worldwide.

The Prüm wines are high-wire acts of tension between fruit and intense minerality and display their terroir in the most expressive way. By some subtle alchemy, the wines spring forth from the parcels of mostly old, ungrafted vines through spontaneous fermentation and a dash of magic in the cellar.

Though Johann Josef Prüm founded the estate in 1911, the family has made wine in Wehlen for centuries. Their largest holdings are in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. These wines are their most sought-after, but their holdings in Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Badstube, and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr are no less masterful.

Not familiar with the vineyards? Let’s explore below!

Wehlener Sonnenuhr’s soil is the famous Devonian blue slate, which imparts intense minerality to the resulting wines. The vineyard, as with JJ Prüm’s sites, overlooks the Mosel River. Vines grow along precipitously steep banks across the river from the village of Wehlen. These produce wines with layers of minerality, fruit, and structure. The wines represent some of the finest in Prüm’s illustrious portfolio.

Zeltinger Sonnenuhr shares a border (and the sundial) with Wehlenher Sonnenuhr. Though the best-known wines from this vineyard are produced by Selbach-Oster, JJ Prüm has a small holding here of 60- to 70-year-old vines. The soils is shallower than in Wehlen, so the vines struggle to find water. The result are complex, racy, and powerful wines.

Graacher Himmelreich is the largest of vineyard in the village of Graach. The soils here are blue slate and weathered clay, and the vines produce astounding wines particularly in warm vintages. Just like Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the wines are notable for their intense minerality and long life in the cellar. The wines are stony with citrus-inflections and crisp acidity.

Further down the Mosel at a sharp bend is the village of Bernkastel, where we find Bernkasteler Badstube and Bernkasteler Lay. The name “Badstube” is in reference to the hot springs near the village that became famous during the Middle Ages. Despite the following naming conventions for a single-vineyard wine, Bernkasteler Badstube actually refers to the collection of six vineyards. Wines with this designation can come from any mix of the sites, though it would be an oversight to think of Bernkasteler Badstube as a mere village wine. Even the VDP designates it as a Grosse Lage, or Great Growth. The six vineyards include some of the most famous vineyards in the world of wine. The wines tend to be racy and floral with lively acidity and a long aging potential.

The tiny Bernkasteler Lay (pronounced “lie”) vineyard is a long strip of a vineyard that extends from a sharp bend in the river. The soils in Lay are blue slate, imparting rich texture and minerality to the wines. It rivals Doktor for the most prestigious vineyard in Bernkastel.

As you can expect with one of the most famous producers in Germany, if not the world, quantities are highly allocated. So stock up on these elite wines now during our three-day sale!

Highlights from Bernkastel:

Joh. Jos. Prüm Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $41.90, that’s $39.81 at 5% off and $37.71 at 10% off, 14 bottles in stock now
Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 94 points
“The nose of the 2021 Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Kabinett still has a touch of reduction, but underneath, an immense, bright, fruity juiciness reminiscent of Cox Orange Pippin apple and green Conference pear appears. More air brings almost a hint of elderflower. The palate is beautifully light with exquisite, dancing, light-footed balance. A textbook Kabinett – tender and playful with immense elegance and delicacy, luminous with vivid lemon acidity, tinged with traces of lime.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spätlese 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 95 points
“This reminds me so much of English hedgerows in summer with their diversity of flowers, berries and herbs. Cool and elegant in spite of the impressive ripeness on the medium-bodied palate. Very polished through the impeccably balanced, subtle finish. Hard to believe that analytically this must have a significant amount of grape sweetness, because it’s almost invisible. Drink or hold.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Auslese Long Gold Capsule (LGK) 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $189, that’s $179.55 at 5% off and $170.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Joh. Jos. Prüm Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Auslese Long Gold Capsule (LGK) 2017 375ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 8 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97 points
“The 2017 Bernkasteler Lay Auslese (Long Gold Capsule), AP 18 18, is very clear, intense and generous but precise on the nose, with lots of mango, ripe peach, mirabelle and honey aromas. On the palate, this is a generously rich but refined, finessed and lush Auslese with a salty-piquant finish that is intense, complex and long. Honey-sweet but still crystalline, transparent and really kicking, this is another gorgeous 2017 Auslese from the Prüm family. Tasted in March 2019.”
Mosel Fine Wines 94 points “The 2017er Bernkasteler Lay Auslese lange GK delivers an almost exuberant nose (at least f or Joh. Jos. Prüm standards) of mango, ripe pineapple, acacia honey, caraway, gingerbread, star anise and pear puree all pepped up by a fleeting touch of volatile acidity. The wine proves lusciously generous and slightly oily on the palate driven by flavors of almond paste, candied exotic fruits and honey. This small BA in the making is quite impressive. 2027-2057.”

Highlights from Graach:

Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 18 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 95 points
“This very concentrated and super-elegant riesling Auslese is still tightly-wound. However, it already has a very wide spectrum of subtle yellow fruit and wild flower aromas. Terrific structure behind the rich, but still medium-bodied palate. Incredibly long, slatey finish with staggering freshness that pulls you back for more of this Mosel masterpiece. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $49.90, that’s $47.41 at 5% off and $44.91 at 10% off, 15 bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 92+ points
“The 2020er Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese offers a quite rich and even slightly ripe nose of almond cream and bakery products as well as honeyed yellow peach, William’s pear, apricot, and anise, all wrapped into smoky and refined elements. The wine coats the palate with ample and sweet fruits, which give a smoother and ampler structure to the wine. The finish has however more presence and intensity, but still needs to integrate its tale of initial sweetness. This clearly has some upside potential as it gains finesse and elegance over time. 2028-2045.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $56, that’s $53.20 at 5% off and $50.40 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 96 points
“Striking nose of garden herbs with just a hint wet earth underlining the delicate white tree fruit aromas. Stunning concentration and energy on the super-straight medium-bodied palate. Very long, almost perfectly balanced finish that is surprising for this category at this early stage in the wine’s development. Great slate expression. Drink or hold.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese 2020 375ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 20 half-bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points
“This feels like it’s holding back a little on the floral, apricot, lime and slate flavors. Light-bodied and graceful, this is well-structured and focused on the lingering finish. Reveals just a touch of earthiness that should disappear with aeration (as this did) or age. Best from 2024 through 2045. —B.S.”
Mosel Fine Wines 93+ points “The 2020er Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese offers a beautifully pure and ripe nose of smoke, grapefruit, lime, vineyard peach, minty herbs, and bacon-driven aromatics from residual from its spontaneous fermentation. The wine coats the palate with gorgeously ripe and juicy notes of fruits and leaves a superbly pure, smooth, and almost soft and suave feel in the hugely long finish. The aftertaste is still loaded with sweetness in need of integration, which will need quite some time to integrate. There is upside potential as the wine gains finesse with age. 2035-2050+.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 97 points
“This very concentrated and super-elegant riesling Auslese is still tightly-wound. However, it already has a very wide spectrum of subtle yellow fruit and wild flower aromas. Terrific structure behind the rich, but still medium-bodied palate. Incredibly long, slatey finish with staggering freshness that pulls you back for more of this Mosel masterpiece. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule (GK) 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97 points
“What a fantastic bouquet! The 2016 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Gold Capsule is super deep, intense and precise on the nose where flinty/stony notes and very fine (and slightly spicy) raisin and grapefruit aromas are displayed. Rich, lush and super sexy on the palate, with highly delicate but intense and persistent fruit and very fine salinity, this is a gorgeous Auslese from the winner of the 2016 vintage chez Prüm: Graacher Himmelreich. This gold-capsuled Auslese (AP 10 17) is rich, finessed and almost weightless in its intensity. The salty and piquant acidity is alive and kicking. You can hardly produce a better Auslese in this delicate and filigreed style. 8% alcohol.”
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 96 points “A stunning Auslese with a delicate floral-honey character and a slew of yellow fruits. This is very seductive. The finish is very long and creamy. Drink or hold.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule (GK) 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $125, that’s $118.75 at 5% off and $112.50 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 95 points
“A pretty white, this exudes elderflower, peach, lime, cumin and slate aromas and flavors. Creamy and elegant, with lively acidity providing structure and definition. Very consistent from beginning to end. Drink now through 2045. —B.S.”
Mosel Fine Wines 94+ points “The 2020er Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese GK was made from shriveled rather than botrytized fruit and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a superbly elegant and refined nose of wet stone, mango, herbs, apricot flower, almond cream, honeyed peach, candied grapefruit, and guava. The wine proves deliciously smooth and creamy on the palate and leaves a great feel of candied citrusy fruits and sweet exotic flavors in the well-delineated and precise finish packed with fruity notes of pear and peach. This gorgeous noble-sweet wine will need more than a decade to fully integrate its sweetness and has even some upside as it gains finesse and complexity. 2035-2060.”

Highlights from Wehlen:

Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 19 bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 92 points
“The 2020er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett greets one with a superbly aromatic and refined floral nose of tangerine, candied grapefruit, minty herbs, some floral nuances, and yellow peach. The wine is very delicate and rather smooth on the spicy and suave palate. The finish proves tight and lean as some fine zesty elements come through and add a very playful and truly Kabinett footprint. The wine combines a feeling of light ripeness and cool freshness and proves a very successful Kabinett. 2028-2040.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $56, that’s $53.20 at 5% off and $50.40 at 10% off, 18 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 96 points
“Here is a great Mosel Kabinett that needs a bit more time to show what it is really made of. Still very young with a pronounced yeasty character that slowly recedes with aeration, but the white peach and honeysuckle aromas that emerge are stunning. Extremely vibrant and precise, the slatey acidity making this fabulously graceful. As pure as an Alpine stream running with glacier water. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 95 points
“Smoke, lime zest, the ripest Mirabelle, and a highlight of chervil play on the nose of the 2021 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese. More air brings wonderfully ripe notions of lemon zest, not quite candied but delightfully ripe. The palate is rounded, concentrated, profound and full of golden yet citrus-edged fruit. Slightly richer than the other Spätlesen but beautifully long with alluring ripe lemon and lime freshness. Weightless substance. Wonderful.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2021 375ml Displayed Price: $46, that’s $43.70 at 5% off and $41.40 at 10% off, 36+ half-bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 96 points
“The 2021er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese offers a superbly complex and pure fresh nose of candied grapefruit, vineyard peach, verbena, almond cream, smoke, and a hint of cassis. The wine proves superbly honeyed and creamy on the palate, where riper elements of pineapple, honeyed peach, and apricot are wrapped in candied citrusy fruits. The wine is intense and still quite broad but the finish is already pure and hugely long. This is a splendid refined Auslese, which just needs time to develop all its facets.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $75, that’s $71.25 at 5% off and $67.50 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now

Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 97 points
“Still very youthful on the nose, this is crammed with ripe peach, plus more delicate notes of pineapple and mangosteen. It’s a minor miracle that this kind of concentration can be packed into such a sleek, medium-bodied palate. What an amazing mouthfeel this has thanks to the seamless integration of slatey acidity and ripeness. Very long finish with spot-on balance. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule (GK) 2016 375ml Displayed Price: $66, that’s $62.70 at 5% off and $59.40 at 10% off, 13 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2016 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (Gold Capsule) is clear, fine and subtle yet concentrated, with vegetal and ripe fruit aromas. Rich, round and piquant, this is an intense and densely woven Auslese (AP 14 17) with a long, tensioned and refreshing mineral finish that lifts the sweet fruit. Gorgeous but made for another decade.”
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 96 points “Super elegant and filigree with a delicacy that you don’t find in many other high-end white wines regardless of grape variety and region of origin. A very long and clean finish. Drink or hold.”

Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule (GK) 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $129, that’s $122.55 at 5% off and $116.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 99 points
“Staggering aromatic complexity with everything from mandarin orange through fresh mint to passion fruit and mangosteen. Super-succulent yet super-refined and precise, this must be tasted to be believed. Just keeps pumping out the fruit aromas at the super-long finish, where the passion fruit freshness is totally breathtaking. Drinkable now, but best from 2023”
Mosel Fine Wines 95 points “The 2020er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese GK was made from shriveled rather than botrytized fruit and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a most gorgeous, superbly complex, and rather subtle nose of minty herbs, candied grapefruit, fine honeyed peach, anise, smoke, and herbs. The wine proves much richer and riper on the palate, where plenty of exotic and ripe fruits join the party. This fruity, smooth, and juicy side is nicely wrapped into zest and tension in the very long finish. Expect more than a decade of patience to get the full impact of this stunning wine. But you will not regret. 2035-2060.”

Mosel Fine Wines 93 points
“The 2020er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese still proves flinty, quite smoky, and reductive at first before it almost reluctantly reveals its super nose made of stone fruits, vineyard peach, Conference pear, anise, and herbs. The wine is carried by a beautifully ripe and zesty acidity running through the palate which lifts up the ripe flavors of apricot, almond cream, and pineapple. The finish is light-weighted, very precise, and focused. This is a beautiful Spätlese. 2028-2045.”

Brick House.

One of the earliest adopters of biodynamic farming in the Willamette Valley, Brick House is one of the most consistently excellent wineries in the region. Founded by Doug Tunnell and Melissa Mills (then working as broadcast journalists) in 1990, the winery has always followed nature first, letting climate and terroir be their guide and sustainability their goal.

Brick House Vineyards ‘Les Dijonnais’ Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge, USA 2022 750ml $59 special, 30 bottles available
(Not reviewed yet, previous review provided for reference)
Audrey Frick- JebDunnuck.com 95 Points (2021 vintage) “From two blocks next to the winery, with three different clones planted in 1995, the ripe red-hued 2021 Pinot Noir Les Dijonnais is lush with notes of wild raspberry, wild herbs, and baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, it is approachable up front but has great underlying structure. It’s drinking well now but has lots of life ahead over the next 8-10 years if stored properly.”

Evesham Wood.

Evesham Wood La Grive Bleue Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, USA 2022 750ml $39 special, 36+ bottles available
Winery Note “While more savory than the Eola-Amity Hills Cuvee, this wine offers fresh flowers (running from violets and jasmine to roses) atop cosmic crisp apples and blueberry compote. The very discrete fruits are balanced by fine tannins nicely punctuated with acid.”

Delas Frères has been making wine in the Rhone for generations and its portfolio includes bottlings from sub-appellations all across the North. With over 75 hectares of vineyard at its disposal (including more than 20 on Hermitage Hill itself), Delas is able to craft world class wines from top quality fruit year-in and year-out. The new winery facility unveiled in 2015 is the most advanced in all of the North and enables ultra-precise execution of the wines while still preserving the classic character of Syrah from the Northern Rhone. Winemaking follows a consistent regime across the bottlings, with fruit being destemmed, cold soaked, and temperature controlled fermentation usually lasting about 20 days. The wines are aged on the fine lees in French barrique of new and 1-year use in varying degrees (higher new oak exposure for the top wines) to soften the wild character of Syrah and bring additional ageability and richness.

Delas Cornas Chante Perdrix 2020 750ml $69 special, 36 bottles available
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 94-95 Points “Inky ruby. Assertive, smoke-accented aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, candied flowers, olive and exotic spices show excellent clarity and mineral lift. Sweet, pliant and lush on the palate, offering concentrated blackberry, cherry liqueur, smoky bacon and violet pastille flavors that show a peppery note on the back half. The impressively long, youthfully tannic finish shows fine detail and leaves behind repeating smoke and floral notes.”

Delas Cote Rotie Seigneur de Maugiron 2020 750ml $99 special, 35 bottles available
Vinous 94-95 Points “Saturated ruby-red. Deeply pitched dark berry, cherry liqueur, licorice and woodsmoke scents show fine clarity and acquire oak spice and floral pastille qualities with air. Juicy and expansive on the palate, offering intense blackberry, cherry-vanilla, fruitcake and salty olive flavors that are sharpened by a jolt of spicy cracked pepper. Shows excellent depth and power; finishes smoky and very long, with youthfully gripping tannins sneaking in late.”

Delas Hermitage Les Bessards 2020 750ml $249 special, 36 bottles available
Vinous 97-98 Points “Inky violet. Displays assertive aromas of blackcurrant, cherry-cola and violet, along with olive, smoked meat and vanilla nuances that gain strength with aeration. Vibrant, focused and appealingly sweet, offering intense, mineral driven black and blue fruit, floral pastille and smoky bacon flavors that become deeper and spicier as the wine opens up. The floral note comes back strong on the impressively long, penetrating finish, which features youthfully chewy.”

Delas Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes 2020 750ml $99 special, 36 bottles available
Vinous 94-96 Points “Inky ruby. Smoke- and mineral-accented black and blue fruits, violet, licorice and an olive nuance on the deeply perfumed nose. Stains the palate with intense cherry, blueberry and fruitcake flavors that are sharpened by a spicy touch of cracked pepper. Youthfully chewy tannins frame an impressively long, penetrating finish that leaves candied dark berry and floral pastille notes behind. These are still young days for this wine but, as usual, it already screams “Hermitage.”

“Who better to highlight during Women’s History month than one of Oregon’s most interesting and multi-faceted enologists?

“If you don’t know about Kelley Fox yet, I cannot recommend her wines enough. After learning from some of the greats (David Lett of The Eyrie Vineyards), and making wines for 10+ years at Scott Paul Wines, Kelley started producing her own wines from prominent vineyard sites all throughout the Willamette Valley.  As one of the first winemakers in Oregon to start practicing biodynamics, Kelley Fox’s wines are expressive, nuanced, and carry an air of intentional precision in the vineyard and during the fermentation process.”

Kelley Fox Albarino, Willamette Valley, USA 2023 750ml $24 special, 32 bottles available
“This Albarino is made from the Willamette Valley in OR, and to be quite honest, is my preference over most Albarinos I have had tried. On the nose and palate, there is tons of restrained but bright green apple, peaches, white flowers, and just a touch of honey. There is high acidity that is beautifully complimented by a round and slightly full body and weight. The finish is long, but refreshing and dry. This makes a great aperitif and would pair well with a shrimp risotto.”

Kelley Fox Wines Gruner Veltliner, Willamette Valley, USA 2023 750ml $33 special, 22 bottles available
“This Gruner Veltliner hits all the marks. It has an effervescent and easy nose with citrus fruit and sea salt coming through. On the palate, juicy melon fruit, honey, and grapefruit peel burst in the mouth. The mouthfeel has light zippiness, a full and oily viscosity, and a slight toast on the finish. This wine is complex, resolved, and would pair well with carbonara.”

 …also recommended from Kelley Fox:

“This wine was produced from the storied Freedom Hill Vineyard in Dallas (bordering the Eola-Hills A.V.A.) and was planted, owned, and farmed by the Dusschee family. The soil here is Bellpine, a marine sedimentary silt clay loam that is well-drained. The Pinot blanc was whole cluster-pressed after picking. It settled in tank for a couple of days before racking and this year, after primary, it was racked into a stainless tank for élevage until bottling. This wine is dry and ML-complete.”–Kelley Fox

Not reviewed yet, previous vintage review provided for reference.
Audrey Frick-JebDunnuck.com 93 Points (2021 vintage) “The 2021 Pinot Blanc Barbie is floral with jasmine, a more high-tone energy of lemon verbena, and fresh peach. The palate is dry and medium-bodied, with more tension, revealing notes of pear, yellow flowers, pithy grapefruit, and wet stone. Drink 2023-2030.”

TOP PICKS

Light and bright with earthy notes, Pinot Noir is a great wine for the Easter dinner table. We can never get enough Evesham Wood anyway, but the Le Puits Sec is one of the most enticing bottles they’ve produced in recent years. A touch of smoke around the edges really helps this wine pair nicely with ham.
Evesham Wood Le Puits Sec Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills, USA 2021 750ml $49 special, 36+ bottles available
Vinous 94 Points “What a beauty! The 2021 Pinot Noir Le Puits Sec blossoms in the glass with a gorgeous mix of dusty violets and roses complemented by autumnal spice, giving way to citrus-tinged wild berries. This sweeps across the palate with finesse, lifted and ethereal, with shades of blue and purple inner florals accentuating dark red fruits. It finishes long and hauntingly floral with a tactile mineral crunch and coating of gently grippy tannins. For lovers of old-school Oregon Pinot, the 2021 is dreamy.”
Winery Note “2021 is another vintage that began with a warmer than average Summer (it hit 118f in June!) but ended on  a cooler than average harvest. It resulted in a vintage with the richness of ‘18 but with ‘19’s pretty side — it’s built on poise rather than broad shoulders. What a gorgeous wine. The nose jumps out of the glass with concentrated aromas of plum, violet and berries. That lift and concentration carries through as the mixed berries become even more concentrated, while beautifully balanced bright acidity leads to moderate tannins on the finish. This is why Erin came to Le Puits Sec in 2007 and never left.”

Ham is smoky, but it’s also sweet… this Viognier, with its ripe fruit and lush mouthfeel, is a perfect choice for the white wine drinkers in your life.
Garon Les Grandes Parcelles Viognier 2022 750ml $26 special, 30 bottles available
Producer Notes “High altitude plots, on sandy granite terroirs. Supple and elegant wine with lots of freshness.”

Weingut Donnhoff ‘Felsenturmchen’ Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe, Germany 2022 750ml $79 special, 32 bottles available
Stuart Pigott (JamesSuckling.com) 95 Points “Ripe and concentrated, but also quite austere with stacks of spice and grapefruit character; everything from the juice to the pith and zest! A seriously dry riesling, but with moderate acidity. Long crushed rock finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Domaine Huet Vouvray ‘Clos du Bourg’ Demi-Sec, Loire, France 2020 750ml $44 special, 36+ bottles available
Rebecca Gibb MW-Vinous 97 Points “Drinking the 2020 Clos du Bourg Demi-Sec is like taking your shoes off at the end of a long day of walking and soaking them in warm water: there’s just satisfaction and relaxation. The 2020 has a sense of volume but not weight, filling the mouth with depths of pure fruit before the acid pours forth like a canal lock being opened. You can expect a hint of spice and crème caramel alongside apple and florals. I am utterly seduced.”

A. Margaine Cuvee Traditionelle Premier Cru Demi-Sec, Champagne, France NV 750ml $49 special, 8 bottles available
A. Margaine Cuvee Traditionelle Premier Cru Demi-Sec, Champagne, France NV 375ml $28 special, 11 bottles available
Vinous 91 Points “The NV Cuvée Le Demi-Sec is a very pretty, attractive Champagne. Even with 32 grams of residual sugar, the Demi-Sec is not an especially obvious wine. If anything, I am surprised – positively – by its restraint. Readers will find a Demi-Sec that is all class and understatement. The higher dosage of 32 grams per liter brings out lovely toasted and spice character to the white orchard fruit flavors. This release is 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir, mostly 2017 and 2016, plus reserve wines. Disgorged: November, 2019.”

Poderi Aldo Conterno Colonnello, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2017 750ml $149 special, 6 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94+ Points “The Poderi Aldo Conterno 2017 Barolo Bussia Colonnello shows good focus, structure and a sharper character that is often the distinguishing factor in this wine. The bouquet is redolent of dark fruit and plum, but it also shows a solid framing of iron ore and dark stony mineral. These give the wine greater lift and contoured edges. This is not the first time that Colonnello is my favorite wine in this lineup, and I suspect it won’t be the last.”

Falletto di Bruno Giacosa Asili, Barbaresco DOCG, Italy 2019 750ml $219 special, 6 bottles available
James Suckling 98 Points “Sweet and succulent aromas of tangerines, freshly cut ripe strawberries, cherries and flowers follow through to a full-bodied palate with sleek and dense tannins that run the length of the wine and then fan out into a dense, vivid finish of fruit. It’s chewy and seriously structured with finesse and energy. Silky texture. This needs at least four or five years to come together and open. Try after 2027.”

Caladan Cabernet Franc, Napa Valley, USA 2017 750ml $199 special, 12 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 96 Points “A top bottling of the variety, this small-production wine is structured and strong, opening reductively, with elements of tobacco leaf, oak and sage. The savory character persists in the form of leather and black pepper, allowing just a touch of sharp red fruit to enter and complement. This wine has further secrets to be revealed…”

Molitor Urziger Wurzgarten  Auslese**  Trocken, Mosel Germany 2017 750ml $49 special, 35 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96+ Points “Bottled with moderate 11% alcohol, the 2017 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Auslese ** (White Capsule) is crystalline and super precise on the clear and flinty nose that exhibits crunchy, iron-rich stone and lime zest aromas. It is lean and fresh but dense and intense on the palate, with ripe, round and concentrated Riesling fruit, some sweetness and refined acidity. This is an elegant, highly finessed and stimulating Würzgarten with a lingering, salty-piquant finish. This wine pairs its moderate alcohol level with great complexity and mineral tension. It’s a fabulous yet still very young Würzgarten of extraordinary class and style.”

San Giusto a Rentennano ‘Percarlo’ Sangiovese Toscana IGT, Tuscany, Italy 2016 750ml $179 special, 16 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 99 Points “The 2016 Percarlo captures all of the beauty it has always shown in the cellar. Pliant, silky and exceptionally polished, the 2016 simply has it all. Freshly cut flowers, rose petal, mint, spice and blood orange add striking aromatic nuance to a core of brilliant Sangiovese fruit. Powerful and ample, with superb aromatic lift, the 2016 Percarlo is exceptionally beautiful and moving from the very first taste. A whole range of floral and mineral notes extend the finish effortless. The tannins need time to soften, so readers should plan on at least a few years of cellaring. In a word: compelling.”

Ulysses Vineyard, Oakville, USA 2018 750ml $145 special, 5 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 99 Points “Just about pure perfection and the finest wine I’ve tasted from this address, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon yet includes smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all from a site just north of Dominus.

Way back in 1638, Nicolau Kopke, a representative of German trade and commerce, began exporting wines from Portugal to the rest of Europe. These fortified Ports were an ideal export and became increasingly popular, becoming one of England’s most consumed wines. To this day, sitting back with a nice glass of Kopke Port and chocolate or blue cheese remains one of life’s great luxuries.

These wines represent the finest releases from Kopke and the Porto region in general. Rarely does such minimalism ensure such opulence.

Kopke 30 Year Old Tawny Port, Portugal 750ml $119 special, 7 bottles available
Wine Spectator 94 Points “A very inviting, open style, with butterscotch and caramel notes framing the core of glazed pear, caramelized peach, golden raisin and warm fig flavors. The lush finish lets crème brûlée and ginger cream details hang, showing a flash of honeysuckle for lift. Drink now. 200 cases imported.”

Kopke 40 Years Old Tawny Port, Portugal 750ml $199 special, 4 bottles available
Wine Spectator 95 Points “This offers a dreamy mix of caramelized pear, fig and peach flavors at the core, while caramel, sesame oil and date notes fill in through the expansive finish. At first glance this is quite lush, but the finish lingers with cut and drive. Drink now. 200 cases imported.”

Kopke Colheita Port, Portugal 1966 750ml $249 special, 2 bottles available
Wine Advocate 96 Points ” …this shows what you get with increasing age: the superb concentration of flavor, the long, intense finishes and the complex medley of flavors that old Tawnies deliver effortlessly. That, to me, is what makes them worth the extra bucks. If some of the youngsters lean more to caramel, this adds more molasses with a touch of Brandy in the background. The concentrated flavors linger more or less endlessly, driven into the palate by the wine’s power and acidity… “

Kopke Colheita Port, Portugal 1957 750ml $489 special, 2 bottles available
Harriet Kininmonth-IWSC 98 Points “Still showing elegance and incredible complexity when considering the age. Soft and mellow, loaded with ripe soft stone fruit. Harmonious yet still has austere delights to savour. Still has development to come.”
