New Arrival Featurette:

Turley

Few wineries have the name recognition and body of work of Turley. Founded by Larry Turley (co-founder of such classic wineries as Frog’s Leap and Helen’s Brother) with a devotion to single vineyard, old-vine Zinfandel, Turley became one of California’s defining wineries in the 90’s.

Today, their fans are no less rabid. Turley is one of those producers who could make as much wine as they’d like and still have people thirsty for it. The gorgeous wines are hugely expressive and can be aged with ease. Though we never feel like there’s enough, the following just arrived and we are excited to share.

Newly Arrived:

Turley Wine Cellars ‘Buck’ Cobb Vineyard Zinfandel, Amador County 2023 750ml $36 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 90-92 points
“The 2023 Zinfandel Buck Cobb Vineyard is bold, juicy and expressive. Dark cherry, plum, gravel, spice, herbs and lavender are front and center. This shows terrific depth and plenty of character to match its exuberant personality .”

Turley Wine Cellars Del Barba Vineyard Zinfandel, Contra Costa County 2023 750ml $36 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 91-93 points
“The 2023 Zinfandel del Barba is ripe, boisterous and super-expressive. Floral overtones and bright acids run through a core of red/purplish fruit. Sandy soils confer lovely aromatic presence to this pure Zinfandel. This is an especially accessible offering from Turley. “

Turley Wine Cellars Kirschenmann Vineyard Zinfandel, Lodi 2023 750ml $46 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92-94 points
“The 2023 Zinfandel Kirschenmann Vineyard is one of the best wines I have tasted from this site, as it has more textural depth and resonance than is typically the case. As always, the Kirschenmann Zinfandel is aromatic and lifted. In 2023, it is a bit more complex and nuanced than it often is. Bright red-toned fruit and floral overtones linger. This is such a pretty wine.”

Rosé

Le Galantin Bandol Rosé, Provence 2024 750ml $24 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“Around 50% Mourvèdre, 25% Cinsault and 25% Grenache, from vines planted on southwest facing hillsides, with clay/limestone soil. The grapes are hand-harvested, after which the bunches are cooled down to 50C for a two day cold soak in order to extract fruit, color and aromatics. The juice is then racked off and the grapes are pressed to stainless steel tanks. 10% of the wine is saignée, the rest come from grapes treated as for making white wine.”

Ridge Vineyards Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Santa Cruz Mountains 2022 750ml $89 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points
“Blending 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot, and lovingly referred to as Baby Monte Bello, designated as Monte Bello since the 2008 vintage, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Monte Bello Vineyard is known for its weightlessness, made to be approachable in its youth with great intention. Barrel-aged for 17 months in 50-60% new oak to integrate and soften the tannins, it still has another 15-20 years of aging, if not 25.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Monthelie 2022 750ml $76.50 special, 6 bottles in stock now
“The 2022 Monthélie Village comes from two lieux-dits and includes 20% whole bunches. It has a very appealing bouquet with crushed limestone infusing red berry fruit. Vibrant and energetic. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. There is admirable transparency here – very stony and mineral-driven with a sapid finish. This is far superior to the previous vintage and is worth seeking out. (Drink between 2025-2033).” -Neal Martin, Vinous

Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-Saint-Denis Tres Girard 2022 750ml $119 special, 2 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 88-90 points
“Offering up aromas of plums, spices, smoked meats and orange rind, Lignier’s 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Très Girard (négoce) is medium-bodied, round and supple, with a charming, somewhat open-knit personality.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Pommard En Brescul 2022 750ml $128 special, 6 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 88-90 points
“The badger that has frequently ravaged this small parcel was deterred this year by means of a sound cannon, yet he nonetheless produced a small crop of the 2022 Pommard En Brescul, a taut, tightly wound young wine redolent of plums, dark berries and spices. It will reward a bit of patience.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Sur la Velle, Monthelie Premier Cru 2022 750ml $108 special, 6 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 88-90 points
“The 2022 Monthélie 1er Cru Sur la Velle is seamless and charming, offering up notes of plums, sweet berries, smoke and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and charming palate. This will offer expressive drinking on release.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier La Riotte, Morey St Denis Premier Cru 2022 750ml $219 special, 5 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 90-93 points
“Notes of dark berries, cherries, licorice, smoked meats and spices introduce the 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Riotte, a medium to full-bodied, supple and sapid wine with a sweet core of fruit that’s framed by powdery tannins.”

Daniel Bouland Morgon Bellevue ‘Cailloux’ 2022 750ml $41.90 special, 36 bottles in stock now
John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 94 points
“The Bellevue “Cailloux” bottling from Domaine Bouland is made from vines that are over sixty years of age in this climat age and planted on granitic soils. The 2022 Bellevue “Cailloux” is nicely ripe in the style of the vintage, coming in at fourteen percent octane, but vibrant and utterly pure on both the nose and palate. The beautiful bouquet delivers an aromatic constellation of sweet dark berries, black cherries, woodsmoke, spit-roasted pigeon, black tea, fresh thyme and a superb base of granitic minerality. On the palate the wine is bright, focused and full-bodied, with a rock solid core of fruit, great mineral undertow and grip, ripe, firm tannins and excellent balance on the long, nascently complex and very promising finish. This is a classic bottle of young Morgon from a great vintage and will demand plenty of cellaring time before it softens up to drink. It will be very long-lived and a great wine once the tannins start to peel away. 2033-2085.”

Daniel Bouland Morgon Bellevue ‘Sable’ 2022 750ml $41.90 special, 36 bottles in stock now
John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 94 points
“The 2022 “Bellevue Sablé” from Mélanie and Daniel Bouland is a brilliant young Morgon. As I have mentioned in the past, the Bouland family makes this wine from their parcels in the sandier sections of the Bellevue vineyard, which is also their younger vines in Bellevue. The 2022 version is a young wine with a proper underlying Morgon chassis of tannin. The bouquet is deep and sappy, wafting from the glass in a mix of sweet dark berries, black cherries, a nice dollop of fresh herbs, coffee bean, dark soil tones, roasted meats and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and sports outstanding mid-palate depth, with fine soil signature, ripe, buried tannins and excellent length and grip on the complex and impeccably balanced, youthful finish. This is going to be an outstanding and very long-lived example of Morgon. 2031-2080.”

Daniel Bouland Morgon Les Delys Vieilles Vignes 2022 750ml $46.50 special, 36 bottles in stock now
John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 96 points
“The 2022 vintage of Daniel Bouland’s Morgon “Delys 1926″ is a brilliant young Cru Beaujolais. The wine comes in at an even fourteen percent in this vintage and offers up truly stunning depth of fruit on both the nose and palate, as these ancient vines have dug deep into the subterranean water sources to keep maturity progressing flawlessly in this dry growing season. The wine wafts from the glass in a complex and sappy blend of sweet dark berries, black cherries, pomegranate, grilled pigeon, dark soil tones, espresso woodsmoke and a topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is pure, sappy and full-bodied, with a bottomless core of old vine fruit, fine-grained, buried tannins, great focus and grip and a long, seamlessly balanced and very complex finish. This is one of the greatest young bottles of Morgon I have ever had the pleasure to taste and it would be insane not to allow it at least some time in the cellar to unlock its secondary and tertiary layers of complexity. 2029-2085.”

Benedicte & Stephane Tissot Savagnin Amphore, Arbois 2020 750ml $69 special, 4 bottles in stock now
No reviews for the 2020 vintage. 2019 review provided for reference.
Decanter 93 points “With intense aromas of red apples, nectarine and blood orange, followed by macerated herbs and sweet spice, this is a Savagnin (indeed an Arbois) like no other. Fermented and aged on the skins, in amphorae, for five months, the assertive texture adds persistence to the apricot, crushed mint and blood orange flavours. Decant and allow to breathe for two hours. Biodynamic. (Drink between 2023-2033).”

Nicolas Greinacher-Vinous 92-94 points “The flinty 2022 Chardonnay Côtes du Jura Sursis mingles reductive notes with grapefruit and lemon flesh. Forward and expressive, I suspect the medium-bodied 2022 won’t need much time to come around. Discrete bitterness adds to the sapid finale of this barrel sample.”

Pascal Doquet ‘Arpege’ Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $66 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Kristaps Karklins-Wine Advocate 91 points
“Disgorged in December 2023 without dosage, Doquet’s NV Blanc de Blancs Arpège untites the flesh and texture of the clayey sites in Vertus with the mineral profile of Le Mont-Aimé and Villeneuve. With two-thirds of reserve wines dating back to 2012 and the remaining 33% from the 2019 vintage, it soars from the glass with scents of jasmine, grapefruit, nectarine and plums. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied with a compact and taut profile, elegant mousse, incisive acidity and a long, penetrating finish. Vinified in used oak barrels (one-third) and enameled steel. It’s the most chiseled of the three non-vintage blends.”

Arnaud Lambert ‘Les Parcelles’ Chenin, Loire 2023 750ml $20.90 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Becky Wasserman Importer Note
“Size: Between 3.0-5.0 ha (7.41-12.35 ac) depending on the vintage. Variety: Chenin Blanc. Vine Age: Planted in 2017, 2019, and before depending on the vineyard. Terroir: From parcels in Brézé, Montsoreau and Saint-Cyr-En-Bourg, multiple soil types over chalky limestone bedrocks. Viticulture: Organic. Vinification: Pressed with whole clusters, fermented with a cultured yeast from the vineyards, 2-3-week fermentation and aging for 6-7 months in steel tanks, spontaneous and partial malolactic conversion (0-30%), SO2 added after malolactic conversion and before bottling (50-70 ppm total), filtered, stored in bottles for 3 months before release. Denoted as a “Vin de France” because in 2021, due to the frost damage, some organic purchased grapes went into the cuvée. They have maintained this designation to allow for flexibility in case future frost or climatic events affect their own grape production.”

No reviews for the 2022 vintage. 2021 review provided for reference.
Eric Guido-Vinous 91 points “The 2021 Cerasuolo di Vittoria is floral and dusty with a spicy blend of crushed raspberries and clove. This traverses both savory and sweet with a core of tart wild berries under an air of violet inner florals. It tapers off with admirable length and a staining of primary concentration, yet through it, all enlivened by a bump of residual acidity. Very nice.”

“Intense floral nose of red and dark fruit, with a slightly peppery, almost meaty character. There is a lot of stony minerality. Tight-knit structure with fruit and acidity that are crisp and zesty, ripe tannins, a velvety texture and a medium body. Good cherry fruit finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.”

Envinate ‘Palo Blanco’ Las Molinas, Canary Islands 2023 750ml $99 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 99 points
“The second vintage of the 2023 Palo Blanco Las Molinas is quite similar to the regular Palo Blanco from the same year: saline, sharp and with great purity, precision and cleanliness. This matured in a Garbelotto 2,500-liter oak foudre. It has a moderate 11.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.01 and 7.48 grams of acidity. It’s vibrant, full of energy and electricity, with effervescent freshness and volcanic minerality. This is very young but has the elements and the balance to age neatly in bottle. 2,500 bottles were filled in July 2024.”

Envinate Táganan Blanco, Canary Islands 2023 750ml $49 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 95+ points
“The 2023 Táganan Blanco didn’t go through malolactic and matured in larger barrels (they are abandoning the 228-liter oak barrels), and the wine seems to have gained in freshness. It’s also less reductive—volcanic, yes, but less reductive. It has 11.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.02 with 7.24 grams of acidity. It’s vibrant and sharp, clean, light to medium-bodied, with purity and symmetry. This wine is going from strength to strength. 6,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024.” <

Envinate Táganan Tinto, Canary Islands 2023 750ml $49 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2023 Táganan Tinto comes from a very good vintage in the zone of Taganana, a very complete year with enough rain and perfect textbook conditions. They picked the grapes from Taganana later than the ones from La Orotava. It fermented without temperature control with more maceration. It’s a year of concentration, depth, elegance, freshness and finesse. The finest vintage for this bottling to date. I feel a lot less reduction here. 6,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2024.”

Envinate ‘Lousas’ Parcela Seoane, Ribeira Sacra 2023 750ml $95 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 96-98 points
“The 2023 Lousas Parcela Seoane is very primary and undeveloped, with some notes of honey and beeswax, from a year when the wines show their character in a clearer way than in 2022. It’s a cooler, more Atlantic vintage with more rain that takes the wines back to the character from before, cooler vintages like 2014, which are a rarity now. This is the ripest of the 2023 vintage, with some 13.5% alcohol. It was vinified with 100% full clusters and 40 days of maceration, and it is currently aging in oak barrels of different sizes. There will be some 2,000 bottles of this, which should be bottled in November 2024.”

A Chingao Vineyards & Envinate ‘Misturado de Abeleda’, Ribeira Sacra 2023 750ml $49 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93-95 points
“The sample I tasted of the 2023 Misturado was a blend of the two 228-liter barrels where the wine was completing its élevage without added sulfur. It’s a lighter wine, with more white grapes (close to 50% versus the 30% from 2022), and the wine has a lighter color, a very fresh nose of red berries and herbs, very tasty and fine-boned. There will be some 600 bottles, which they expect to fill in November 2024. There is a big jump in quality from 2022 to 2023 in this wine.”

“The spiritual heart of red wine production at Bow & Arrow. The first “Loire” red variety I ever got my hands on so I’m 13 vintages in wrestling with this chameleon grape. Peter William Vineyard Malbec, Rogue Valley 2019 750ml $29 special, 16 bottles in stock now
Norm Roby-Wine Review Online 92 points
“Unable to decide which vintage should be released first, the winery decided to offer both its 2018 and 2019 Malbec at the same time and price. Both are from the same vineyard block made by the same winemaker. Both were aged 18 months in 30% new oak barrels. The major difference is the oak; in 2018 it was American, whereas the oak in 2019 is French. The differences were subtle, but with time in the glass the 2019 displayed more finesse and complexity. It comes across as a pretty, elegant Malbec with spiced dark plum fruit and baking spice flavors, refined, smooth tannin and light oak. Overall, the 2019 has more polish and a potential to develop with short term cellaring.”

The blend of 65% Grenache, 18% Syrah, 15% Cinsaut and 2% Petite Sirah starts with crisp red currant, crumple flower and cracked white pepper aromas. The palate is young, fresh and tense, offering raspberry jam dusted in lavender and delicate baking spices.”
