Burgundy is the most complicated wine region in the entire world and attempting to understand it is a task that knows no end. The main reason for this complexity is the overwhelming number of vineyard sites with entirely unique expressions. The formation of these plots can trace their history back to the early ecclesiastical land holdings of the Catholic Church, and subsequent discovery and parcelization by monks. As these vineyard sites gained renown and increased in value, wealthy French nobles purchased vast swathes of land on which to form prestigious domaines. This was not to last though, as the French Revolution in the 18th century forced the vineyard land from the hands of the wealthy and into the possession of newer and more modest owners.
What you were left with in Burgundy after this period of rapid change was a multitude of new land owners with relatively little winemaking and viticultural expertise. This situation was compounded by the fact that the Napoleonic Code (which followed the Revolution) mandated that land be divided among all the heirs of a family; effectively further subdividing the vineyards at an exponential rate. An individual heir might come into possession of a single row of vines in a prestigious vineyard and have no personal capacity to develop a wine from it. This problem demanded a solution.
Enter: The Negociant. A winemaking operation whose concept revolved around purchasing the grapes of land owners all around Burgundy and vinifying them into distinct wines fit for the market. This relationship came with deep expertise into the villages and wine styles of the entire region, and substantial means through which to make make wine on a large scale.
Enter: Louis Jadot. If there is one negociant you must know from Burgundy, it is absolutely this estate. They’ve been producing top quality wine from the best sites in Burgundy since their founding in 1859. Over the last few hundred years the Jadot family significantly expanded their influence and demonstrated an unmatched ability to express the nuances of pinot noir, chardonnay, and gamay from diverse crus and vineyard locations. In the 20th Century the Jadot family increasingly realized the potential for scaling their personal land ownership and owning the vine to wine process from end to end. Today they have over 260 hectares of vineyard land and the winemaking operation has never been more sophisticated. The wines are honest expressions of the top Crus and offer significant value in comparison to the prices of hard to find cult producers. They have become collectible in their own right for those that love classic Burgundy delivered with amazing consistency vintage to vintage.
The Beaujolais wines are equally exciting. This expansion of Jadot’s focus outside of the Cote will reward wine drinkers that appreciate more awakened fruit flavors and earlier drinking bottles. That isn’t to say that the wines cannot last in the cellar, for on the contrary these Beaujolais examples can evolve and improve over the test of time.

Cru Beaujolais On Sale Now from Louis Jadot:
Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Fleurie, Beaujolais, France 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $31.90, that’s $30.30 at 5% off and $28.71 at 10% off, 14 bottles available
Winery Note “This wine is a blend made from the great parcels owned within the appellation by the Château des Jacques, namely Bel Air, Grille-Midi and Cercillon. They are located at an altitude above 300 m on a winding place. The pink granite varies from one vineyard parcel to another (depth and alteration), lending the wine complexity…With a beautiful deep cherry colour, red fruits flesh and flowers aromas, this Fleurie is rich, delicate and smooth. It is a very lush and voluptuous wine.”
Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Morgon, Beaujolais, France 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $29, that’s $27.55 at 5% off and $26.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles available
Decanter 92 points “The blended ‘village’ Morgon from Château des Jacques is delicious, with a fairly deep colour, dark plummy fruit, and hints of black tea, anise and earth. The texture is tannic, dense and firm, but there is enough freshness to guarantee that this continues to sing on the palate. The grapes are from the granite soils of Courcelette (where this domaine owns 14ha) and the Roches Pourries of the Côte du Py (where there are another 6ha). The combination provides a wine of harmonious elegance that is in no way lacking in power or length. (Drink between 2024-2035).”
Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Morgon Cote du Py, Beaujolais, France 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 11 bottles available
Winery Note “An emblematic terroir composed of bluish rocks derived from an underwater volcano and whose origins are even more ancient than the pink granite of Moulin à Vent…The interesting aspect of Côte du PY originates from the blue rock which is richer than its neighbour planted on granite. It shows rich aromas of white pepper and blackberry together with full body. Its complexity will enhance a wide range of delicate dishes.”
Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin A Vent, Beaujolais, France 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $31.90, that’s $30.30 at 5% off and $28.71 at 10% off, 29 bottles available
Vinous 91 points “The 2022 Moulin-à-Vent has a sapid, marine-tinged bouquet, hints of shucked oyster shell infusing the dark berry fruit. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly furry tannins, spicier than the Morgon, with a little more edginess and pepperiness on the finish. Very fine. (Drink between 2024-2032).”
Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin A Vent Grand Carquelin , Beaujolais, France 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 18 bottles available
Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin A Vent Grand Carquelin , Beaujolais, France 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums available
Winery Note “A few steps away from the windmill itself, and separated from the la Roche vineyard by a small road, the Clos du grand Carquelin faces a little bit more towards the south and offers a different personality. Here the soil is made of granitic sands and is deeper (60m) and more clayish…The Clos du Grand Carquelin is a particularly complex, delicate and elegant wine. It is appealing, lively and opens nicely once in a glass. This cru Beaujolais is a nice companion to delicately flavoured dishes.”
Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin A Vent Clos des Thorins , Beaujolais, France 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 16 bottles available
Decanter 95 points “”Facing south, the 60-year-old vines at Clos des Thorins are located on deep granitic soils. 12 months maturation in oak post-fermentation. A fine Moulin-à-Vent with precision and focus on the palate. Violet notes, not over-sweet or heavy. Plenty of substance with floral character and black olive notes. Complex and beautifully constructed – a terroir driven wine.”
Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin A Vent Clos Rochegres, Beaujolais, France 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 18 bottles available
Louis Jadot Chateau des Jacques Moulin A Vent Clos Rochegres, Beaujolais, France 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $106, that’s $100.70 at 5% off and $95.40 at 10% off, 3 magnums available
Vinous 90 points “The 2022 Moulin-à-Vent Clos de Rochegrès has more complexity on the nose compared to the regular cuvée: more floral, iris flower scents filtering through the dark berry fruit, and hints of iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It’s fleshy, but right at the finish, it is a tad sweeter than I would like, lacking a bit of sapidity and tension. Near, yet not quite there! That said, it remains a decent Moulin-à-Vent that will benefit from a couple of years in bottle. (Drink between 2025-2033).”
Winery Note “This vineyard shows a high point of 361 metres above sea level. (Au Mont is the effective name of this place). Some blocks of “gray rocks” are emerging in the middle of our vine rows. On these steep slopes, facing South-East, the soils, made of shallow pink granite sand, with some quartz, are very draining These conditions, combined with the winds, altitude and optimal orientation offer very concentrated wines, but with always a bit of freshness and elegance… This wine is opulent and generous, but always very fresh. Rochegrès is one of the best Moulin à Vent selections. It is complex and is therefore able to match a large choice of food : meat, cheese, vegetables etc …”
Burgundies On Sale Now from Louis Jadot:
Louis Jadot Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits, France 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $599, that’s $569.05 at 5% off and $539.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles available
Neal Martin-Vinous 94-96 Points “The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has one of the finest aromatics from Jadot this year with a seductive bouquet of wild strawberry, blueberry, sous-bois and hints of Earl Grey and wilted rose petals. Wonderful. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and crisp acidity. It’s taut and fresh with a touch of spice toward the cohesive and persistent finish. This is a superb effort in such a challenging growing season.”
Louis Jadot Clos-St Denis Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits, France 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $499, that’s $474.05 at 5% off and $449.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles available
Decanter 94 points “Lovely ripe cherry fruit with floral and spice notes and a bit of smoke and toast introduce this marvelous wine, one of the signal successes among the Jadot reds in the 2021 vintage. The wine is one of finesse and elegance; on the palate there is vivacious fresh acidity, but enough density to be substantial and long without being imposing. The wine is produced from the 0.17-hectare parcel in the original Clos St-Denis lieu-dit owned by Domaine André Gagey and farmed under a long-term contract by Jadot.”
Wine Advocate 93-95 points “Pure and elegant, the 2021 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru (Domaine Gagey) opens in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, cherries, rose petals, spices and raw cocoa. Full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a long, saline finish, it has turned out beautifully.”
Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits, France 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 27 bottles available
Wine Spectator 97 points “Rose, cherry and spice aromas introduce this light-bodied, saturated version. The flavors add wild strawberry, incense and kirsch notes, while remaining persistent on the kaleidoscopic finish. Feels tense now, yet should develop nicely over time. A mineral element lingers. Best from 2023 through 2045.”
Louis Jadot Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru, Cote de Beaune, France 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off and $224.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 96 points “From vineyards owned by the inheritors of the Louis Jadot estate, this wine has all the power expected from this vineyard. Its density and richness are palpable, even when crispened by a fresh citrus edge. Wood aging adds spice and enhances the aging potential. Drink from 2024.”
Vinous 94+ points “(Jadot bottled 35 barrels, representing a normal yield; the harvest lasted into the beginning of October): Very pale, bright yellow. Knockout nose combines lemon, ginger, botanical herbs, shiso leaf and crushed-rock minerality. Seriously concentrated wine, showing the juicy side of the 2016 vintage and the impeccable balance that was possible when yields were normal. The sharply delineated citrus, spice and mineral flavors are framed and intensified by harmonious acidity (“which was easy to control because we had so many barrels,” according to Barnier). Conveys an impression of outstanding density without weight and finishes with great palate-staining length, herbal lift and salty grip.”
Wine Advocate 93+ points “Aromas of yellow orchard fruit, waxy lemon rind, iodine and smoky new oak introduce the 2016 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot), a full-bodied, satiny and nicely layered wine that’s deep, concentrated and persistent. It’s a youthfully reserved but decidedly impressive Corton-Charlemagne that will reward bottle age.”
Louis Jadot Corton Pougets Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits, France 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $169, that’s $160.55 at 5% off and $152.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles available
Vinous 94-96 points “The 2021 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru has a wonderful bouquet with transparent red cherry, raspberry and floral notes. This wine is classy and seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins. It’s lithe and agile in the mouth with a mineral undertow towards the finish. Often one of Jadot’s classiest offerings, this Pougets is no different and one of their stars in 2021.”
Decanter 93 points “Lovely, ripe plum fruit aromas with notes of earth and smoke feature prominently on the nose of this firm, tannic wine with fresh acidity and abundant extract. The grapes come from a domaine-owned parcel at mid-slope next to Le Charlemagne. Jadot is the last producer to isolate this lieu-dit, which is often used for white wine. The structure and freshness of this wine demonstrate that it makes a very interesting red as well.”
Wine Advocate 91-93 points “Aromas of sweet red berries, plums, peonies and spices introduce the 2021 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot), a medium to full-bodied, rich and ample wine with a deep core of fruit, sweet structuring tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish. This cuvée is always a strong suit chez Jadot, and this year is no exception.”
Giacomo Conterno Arione, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $289, that’s $274.55 at 5% off and $260.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles available
PRE-ARRIVAL ETA MID-JULY
Vinous 97+ points “The 2021 Barolo Arione is a wine of exquisite finesse and elegance. The bouquet alone is immediately arresting. Then again, that is such an Arione signature. Sage, rose petal, mint, orange peel and dried flowers begin to emerge over time. Nearly seamless tannins and exceptional balance add to its total allure, while strong floral and savory accents punctuate the finish.”
Giacomo Conterno Cerretta, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $279, that’s $265.05 at 5% off and $251.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles available
PRE-ARRIVAL ETA MID-JULY
Vinous 95 points “The 2021 Barolo Cerretta is the most approachable of Conterno’s 2021 Barolos. It seems to offer a bit less overall dimension and complexity than the other Barolos and, therefore, more complete balance of its components in the early going that should allow it to start opening with a few years in bottle. There’s plenty of underlying nervy structure, and yet the Cerretta is not quite as imposing as its siblings in this range. Floral and spice overtones gradually open with a bit of aeration.”
Giacomo Conterno Francia, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $299, that’s $284.05 at 5% off and $269.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles available
PRE-ARRIVAL ETA MID-JULY
Vinous 99 points “The 2021 Barolo Francia is a vertical, explosive Barolo endowed with tons of energy. Bright acids and fine beams of tannin provide the framework for this striking young Barolo. All the elements are so well balanced. Time in the glass brings out an interplay of mineral-drenched energy, persistence and textural breadth. There’s a lot of structure, and yet the tannins feel fine-grained and finessed. I especially admire its translucent energy. Magnificent.”
Grab a 100 point legendary vintage of Monfortino!
Giacomo Conterno Monfortino Riserva, Barolo DOCG, Italy 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $899, that’s $854.05 at 5% off and 809.10 at 10% off, 15 bottles available
PRE-ARRIVAL ETA MID-JULY
Decanter 100 points “Demonstrating the meticulous precision for which the estate is known, the 2019 Monfortino is a thoroughbred. I was able to taste it on a couple of occasions during its maturation, after the blend of Francia and Arione was made. Since bottling last spring, it has retreated into itself and now just hints at black tea, truffle and dark wet earth. The tannins are still rigid and stubborn, though very sophisticated and inextricable from the fruit, while the acidity is simply salivating. Glimpses of baked earth, granite and graphite appear, but truly, this will take years to unfold. For now, it’s all iron fist. The yet-to-be-bottled 2020 which I tasted alongside will likely be approachable long before this.”
Jeb Dunnuck 98-100 points “A jeweled ruby color, the 2019 Barolo Riserva Monfortino was tasted from botti and is the final blend. As of March 2024, it was still a few months away from being bottled and was scheduled to spend another year in bottle prior to its release. Having tasted this wine a year ago, it exceeded my expectations at this tasting and is really coming into its own now. Roberto Conterno says the vintage reminds him of 2013, but he thinks the addition of some Arione in the final blend of the 2019 may explains why it seems to have a touch more finesse than the 2013. It is a fantastically structured wine that offers a great deal of pure, compact richness in this vintage, with expressive floral aromas that unfold beautifully in the glass. It continues to build in intensity and focus through the palate, with precise tension and length. I anticipate this to be a wine with tremendous longevity in the coming decades.”
Vinous 99 points “The 2019 Barolo Riserva Monfortino has closed down considerably since I last tasted it. Then again, the 2019 is a very serious Monfortino that includes the entirety of Conterno’s production from both Francia and Arione. Today, the tannins are pretty imposing, but modern Monfortinos have shown an ability to assimilate their tannin with much less time in bottle than was once required. Production for the 2019 is on the higher side because of the blending of sites, so readers should have a relatively easy time sourcing this.”
