Brunello di Montalcino
Sauternes from Chāteau Coutet

New Arrival Featurette:

Yohan Lardy

“Yohan Lardy’s modestly sized domaine comprises seven organically farmed hectares of vines, many of them very old, in some of the best parts of Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie and Chénas…Lardy has been producing outstanding, finely detailed and energetic wines since his first vintage, 2012. It’s a mystery to me that, at least in the US, they are still relatively unknown…” –Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 98 points
“It’s hard to wrap your head around this extraordinary Moulin-a-Vent, but give it time, and it will wrap itself around–and into–your head. The ripe forest-berry aromas have incredible depth, giving way to a mouth-filling, full-bodied palate that’s highly structured. Then comes a gigantic wave of mineral freshness, almost perfectly underlined by fine tannins. Lastly, it glides off into the distance, pulling you with it. Billy Norris-Vinous 92 points
“The 2024 Rosé Château de Selle is the brightest and most mineral-driven of the three estate Rosés from Ott. Vibrant and utterly refreshing, the 2024 smells like the sea, levitating from the glass with a briny, herbaceous, maritime-influenced bouquet highlighted by spikes of fresh jasmine and orange peel. The 2024 splashes across the palate with soft curves and palpable grip. Balance? You bet. This is a match made in heaven for freshly shucked oysters.”

France – Champagne

We have just received the first wine from Raphael Bereche’s wife, Pauline!
This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
Pauline Collin Bereche Vieilles Vignes Ludes Premier Cru, Champagne 2019 750ml $99 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points “The 2019 Extra Brut Ludes Viellies Vignes from Pauline Collin Bérêche emerges from two hectares of vineyards in Ludes. The blend is 65% Pinot Noir 30% Chardonnay and 5% Petit Meslier with the Pinot driving the wine’s texture and overall presence. This really blossoms with time in the glass. Readers will find a Champagne built on textural resonance and vinous intensity. Aromatic high tones from a very small touch of volatile acidity from vinification and aging in oak and the Petit Meslier in the blend add an attractive upper register. The 2019 was finished with no dosage although there is some residual sugar. This is a formidable debut.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today for the magnum!
Billecart-Salmon ‘Cuvee Nicolas-Francois Billecart’ Millesime, Champagne 2012 1.5L $459 special, 3 magnums in stock now
James Suckling 97 points
“This complex Champagne has delicious aromas of waffle cones, vanilla beans, apricots and pastry with touches of white chocolate and salted caramel. It’s electric on the palate, which is creamy yet structured and focused, with a fine bead of bubbles and a zesty, tangy backbone of acidity. Long and tense finish. 60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay (all premier and grand cru), 10% of wines are vinified in oak casks. 10 years on lees. 3.8 g/L dosage. Disgorged in the second half of 2024. Drink or hold.”

France – Bordeaux

Winemaker Note
“This white Bordeaux is fine yet complex, with rich aromas of grape-fruit, pear and pineapple yielding to subtle mineral notes. The first sip reveals a richness and harmony; the bright acidity rounds it out nicely to give the fullest expression of Bordeaux Sauvignon Blanc.”

Chateau Gromel Bel Air Cuvee Eva Blanc 2023 750ml $14 special, 11 bottles in stock now
Decanter-World Wine Awards 94 points
“Complex wine, with lime blossom, grapefruit, lemon and fresh herbs, and some light toasty notes. Packs a big punch for the price.”

France – Bandol

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today for the magnum!
Domaine Tempier Bandol Rouge Cuvee La Tourtine, Provence 2022 1.5L $179 special, 6 magnums in stock now
La Revue du Vin de France 96 points
“With its mineral delicacy and perfect concentration, La Tourtine is surprisingly appealing for its age: let’s bet it will close down again. Less powerful, more elegant than usual, it testifies to a vinification that took into account the warmth of the vintage to get the best out of a perfectly ripe Mourvèdre, extracted with finesse.”

Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG 2019 750ml $899 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Decanter 100 points
“Demonstrating the meticulous precision for which the estate is known, the 2019 Monfortino is a thoroughbred. I was able to taste it on a couple of occasions during its maturation, after the blend of Francia and Arione was made. Since bottling last spring, it has retreated into itself and now just hints at black tea, truffle and dark wet earth. The tannins are still rigid and stubborn, though very sophisticated and inextricable from the fruit, while the acidity is simply salivating. Glimpses of baked earth, granite and graphite appear, but truly, this will take years to unfold. For now, it’s all iron fist. The yet-to-be-bottled 2020 which I tasted alongside will likely be approachable long before this.”

Espectacle del Montsant, Montsant 2022 750ml $136 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 98 points
“The 2022 Espectacle del Montsant was produced exclusively with Garnacha from an ancient plot in the village of La Figuera in Montsant at more than 600 meters above sea level on limestone and clay soils. The clusters were stored at cool temperature for 24 hours, put through a sorting table and destemmed. The grapes fermented in a new 4,000-liter French oak vat, where it had numerous pump-overs and punch-downs and a four-to-five-week maceration. After pressing, it matured in that same oak vat for 14 to 16 months. This is always a ripe and powerful wine, and in the warm and dry 2022, it’s no exception; it hits 15% alcohol and has a pH of 3.68. Despite everything, the wine has a pale, bright ruby color and the spectacular nose of flowers, wild berries and aromatic herbs. It’s hedonistic, showy and decadent, incredibly fine-boned and elegant, with a fragile characteristic, energetic and profound. You don’t notice the ripeness or alcohol at all. Always explosive and showy, this is a wine that makes heads turn. 5,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024. Since 2023, this vineyard has been cultivated by Christian Barbier, once the grower that used to cultivate it, Joan Anguera, retired.”

Weingut Keller RR Riesling, Rheinhessen 2024 750ml $75 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“Keller’s ‘RR’ is one of those insider’s bottles. Normally, the wine is sourced from a rare red-soil parcel within the Kirchspiel. This cask rarely ferments totally dry and the Kellers have always enjoyed the natural balance of the wine. It’s what we’d call a ‘feinherb’ –the wine is just a bit off-dry. Normally, you’ll see the bottle labeled as ‘Kirchspiel RR,’ the ‘RR’ denoting ‘Riesling’ from the ‘Red’ soil.”

Weingut Keller ‘Von der Fels Riesling’ Trocken, Rheinhessen 2024 750ml $49 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“‘Von der Fels’ is the young-vine fruit from the Grand Cru vineyards and, year after year, is simply one of the great values of not only German wine, but of white wine at large. A Riesling of pronounced limestone character.”

Austria

Lenzmark ‘New Chapter’ Gruener Veltliner 2022 750ml $19 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-James Suckling 93 points
“This excellent Austrian dry white combines freshness, depth and character in a very 21st century way. The abundant citrus, yellow apple, garden herb and floral aromas are wrapped around a very solid core in which the acidity and minerality neatly interlock. Crisp finish with so much positive energy! Drink or hold.”

Biondi Santi Tenuta Greppo Riserva, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016 750ml Was $699, Now $619 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 99 points
“Wow, here is a vintage I’ve been anxiously waiting to try. The 2016 growing season was one of the best in recent memory in Montalcino, and if we look back in time, this vintage marks the year Biondi-Santi was sold to a French group. The prestigious 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva proves a mighty collector’s bottle that will undoubtedly gain in complexity and depth with careful bottle age. The wine offers wild nuances of forest berry and tart cherry, and there are herbal side notes as well as floral tones of dried violet and lilac. The tannins are soft, powdery and feel like they melt away on the palate.”

Casanova di Neri ‘Giovanni Neri’, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018 750ml $269 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 points
“Here’s an exciting and important new addition to the Casanova di Neri portfolio. The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Giovanni Neri is shapely and enriched in an extremely pleasing manner. The Neri family has perfected its approach to concentration and fruit weight over the many years they have been making excellent wines. This wine gives the appearance of being full-bodied, but ultimately, it reveals a very elegant side. Ripe cherry and blackberry cede to oak spice, toast and crushed white stone. The tannins are softly pliable and sweet. Compared to the estate’s other wines, Tenuta Nuova and Cerretalto, Giovanni Neri is finer and more delicate, even fragile in personality. Some 5,400 bottles were made in this inaugural release.”

Cerbaia Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016 750ml $49 special, 25 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 93+ points
“The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is a dark and rich expression with a generous delivery of dark fruit—prune, plum and black cherry. The vines are planted in galestro soils with clay and shale in a 3.5-hectare plot, resulting in a 14,000-bottle production. Winemaking is simple, with fermentation in steel and aging in botte grande for three years. There is some extra density or heaviness to the fruit that feels reinforced by the oak notes and ultimately by the wine’s tannins. This wine will be released in April 2021, and that sounds about right because it needs more time.”

Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018 750ml $99 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Wine & Spirits Magazine 92 points
“This is the most high-toned of Gaja’s three 2018 Brunellos, a portion of the fruit coming from the Torrenieri vineyard in Montalcino’s cooler northeastern corner. Hints of oregano and citrus peel accent the tangy red cherry flavors, with lingering hints of smoke and spice on the finish.”

La Gerla Riserva gli Angeli, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018 750ml $99 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points
“This red is rich and generous for the vintage, offering cherry, plum and rose flavors that show light accents of earth and dusty herbs. Light tannins and lively acidity lend support, and this fades gracefully on the finish. Best from 2026 through 2040.”

Salvioni Cerbaiola Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2017 750ml Was $199, Now $169 special, 8 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino La Cerbaiola grows in intensity in the glass, with delicate aromas that are especially floral and light in character. Instead of blackberry or blackcurrant, this elegant wine delivers cassis and cranberry. Instead of overt spice, you get licorice, balsam herb and camphor ash. The Salvioni house style is ethereal and light, and although that extra vintage ripeness and concentration does register on the palate, farming and winemaking at this estate puts an emphasis on acidity over power or structure. These choices were particularly important in 2017.”

Talenti Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2017 750ml $49 special, 14 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 93 points
“The bouquet on the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is to die for, offering cloves and balsamic spices that give way to crushed cherries, sage and fresh mint. It’s elegant yet lifted in feel, with silky textures carrying the ripe wild berry fruits effortlessly across the palate. Saline-minerals combine with grippy tannins toward the close, slowing the 2017’s momentum ever so slightly, yet still permitting the most beautiful display of hard red candies and violet florals to linger incredibly long. What a gorgeous 2017, and with short-term cellaring potential as well. Of note is that Talenti’s production was down by 25% due to the conditions of the vintage, and there will not be a Riserva, as all of the juice went to the Brunello.”

Jeb Dunnuck 96 points
“A heavenly dessert wine, the 2015 Château Coutet boasts a huge nose of caramelized citrus, crème brûlée, tangerine, and honeysuckle. With huge richness and sweetness, moderate acidity, a thick, fat mouthfeel and a blockbuster finish, it’s borderline over the top yet holds it together. It will be interesting to see how this evolves, but it’s undeniably gorgeous today.”

“One of the top sweet wines in this report is the 2016 Chāteau Coutet, which has the vintage’s plush, opulent style as well as thrilling purity and good acids.
