Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot – Cult White Burgundy
New Arrival Featurette:
Ovum
More or less synonymous with the low intervention winemaking movement in the Willamette Valley, Ksenija and John House founded Ovum in 2011 and have specialized in white and other non-red styles of wine ever since. We adore the wines for their fun and easy-drinking style that pair perfectly with a day at the beach or late nights around a campfire.
Newly Arrived from Ovum:
Ovum ‘Big Salt’ Orange, Elkton 2024 750ml $19 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “2024 Big Salt “Orange Rose” has a hazy, rose gold/amber hue. The nose is an earthy dance between the ginger, turmeric notes of skinzy Pinot Gris, and the tropical island vibes of skin contact Gewurz and Muscat. It’s like stirring a mandarin creamsicle into a glass of hibiscus ginger tea. The palate is soft but retains the tannic grip ramato Pinot gris is known for.”
This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!
Ovum ‘Big Salt’ White, Elkton 2024 750ml $18 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “2024 Big Salt is dry, aromatic and zippy. Salty lemon, ginger and aloe vera leap out of the glass. A short skin contact gives the palate textural complexity, even at a low 12.0% abv. In it’s youth, Big Salt continues to be Muscat forward, but we find as it ages into summer that Gewurz comes to the forefront, while oceanic citrusy Riesling shines after a year in the bottle. Not that anyone is aging Big Salt, but you’ll be rewarded if you do! 46% Riesling, 28% Gewurz, 18% Early Muscat, 6% Pinot Blanc, 1% Pinot Gris, 1% others.”
This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!
Ovum ‘Old Love’ White Blend, Oregon 2023 750ml $19 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “OLD LOVE is produced the same way as Big Salt – with a focus on developing a silky texture. The aromas are more layered and complex, and the texture is richer while remaining crisp at the same time. OLD LOVE is a dry, white blend that dreams of capturing the summer sun in a bottle of wine. Aromas of fresh cut blood orange, salty lemon and aloe vera typify this racy, texturally rich white wine. Guided by mother nature, we combine the Big Salt process, with a proprietary aging process to elevate the terroir that each of our five vineyards bring us (citrus, salinity, bright acidity, florality, ripe apricot).”

New Week – New Arrivals
France – Burgundy
This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
Domaine Marc Colin et Fils Bourgogne Aligote, Burgundy 2023 750ml $31.90 special, 36 bottles in stock now
VinopolNote: Founded in 1970 in St. Aubin, Domaine Marc Colin produces mostly white wines sourced from holdings in Chassagne, Puligny, and Santenay, and St. Aubin. As an exclusively family-run operation, production has remained miniscule in spite of their increasing international fame. Vines are worked sustainably, and some parcels age over 100 years.
Domaine Marc Colin et Fils Santenay Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy 2023 750ml $49 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Neal Martin-Vinous 89-91 points “The 2023 Santenay Vieilles Vignes, from vines 80 years old and above, had a slight reduction on the nose. This has darker fruit than the Chassagne Rouge, plummy with a touch of iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well-judged acidity, hints of Morello cherries mixed with strawberry and raspberry and a gentle grip on the finish. It is well-crafted and pure. (Drink between 2026-2034).”
France – Other
Billecart-Salmon ‘Le Clos Saint Hilaire’ Blanc de Noirs Brut, Champagne 2009 750ml $589 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98 points “The 2009 Extra Brut Le Clos Saint-Hilaire is stellar. I can’t remember a young Clos Saint-Hilaire with this much sheer immediacy. Then again, we are talking about 2009. Blood orange, spice, gingerbread and new leather play off a core of vibrant, red-toned Pinot fruit. Blocking the malolactic fermentation further emphasizes energy. The 2009 finishes with mind-blowing purity and exceptional finesse. This is the first vintage with some of the production bottled in magnum. The essence of Pinot. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. Disgorged: January 2024. Drink: 2027-2044.”

Domaine Pierre Luneau-Papin Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine Sur Lie Le Verger, Loire 2022 750ml $24 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Importer Note “100% Melon de Bourgogne, from Les Bernardières in Chapelle-Heulin. Vines planted in 1998, soil is schist bedrock. Pressed with whole clusters, ambient yeast fermentation, aged for 5-6 months in underground glass-lined tank, no racking during aging, no fining or filtration, SO2 added at bottling.”
Italy – Piedmont
Nervi Conterno ‘Il Rosato’, Piedmont 2024 750ml $29 special, 21 bottles in stock now
Importer Note “Sourced from the Molsino, Valferana, Garavoglie, and Casacce vineyards. Hand-harvested. Aged for five to six months on the lees.”

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Albesani’, Barbaresco DOCG 2021 750ml $57.50 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 96 points “Bright with cherry, raspberry, rose, white pepper and mineral flavors, this is both elegant and intense, with vibrant acidity and refined tannins driving it to a lengthy finish. Shows terrific balance and poise, combining elegance and power with purity. Best from 2029 through 2048.”
This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Faset’, Barbaresco DOCG 2021 750ml $54.50 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 95 points “Exuding finesse, with expressive aromas and flavors of cherry, strawberry, currant, rose and mint, this red is complex, structured and long. Its dense foundation of tannins and lively acidity define the long, mineral-infused aftertaste. Best from 2028 through 2045. 250 cases made, 60 cases imported.”

Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Basarin’, Barbaresco DOCG 2021 750ml $54.50 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 95 points “There’s plenty of depth to this red in the form of cherry, strawberry, pomegranate, hibiscus, mineral and tobacco aromas and flavors. Harmonious and silky yet solidly built, with ripe, refined tannins enveloping the long finish. Best from 2028 through 2043. 250 cases made, 60 cases imported.”
Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Sori Paitin’, Barbaresco DOCG 2021 750ml $66 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 97 points “A mix of plum, cherry, juniper, eucalyptus and earth flavors highlights this dense red, which borders on powerful, yet with a supple texture and vibrant acidity keeping everything well-defined and driving the extensive finish. Beautifully balanced and complex. Best from 2028 through 2046. 917 cases made, 220 cases imported.”
Paitin di Pasquero-Elia ‘Serraboella’, Barbaresco DOCG 2021 750ml $49 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 93 points “A streak of wet earth underlines the cherry, plum and menthol flavors in this dense red. Fluid and well-balanced, with firm yet refined tannins lining the finish. An appealing mix of fruity and savory. Best from 2028 through 2045. 1,167 cases made, 300 cases imported.”
Vietti Rocche di Castiglione, Barolo DOCG 2021 750ml $269 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 98+ points “This is a serious beauty that reminds us of the brilliant work underway at this leading estate. Yes, ownership has changed over recent years, but this wine remains “Rocche-solid.” From an epic vintage, the Vietti 2021 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a classic with those elegant mineral notes of glacial till and flake salt followed by carefully ripened fruit, blackcurrant and a finely tuned floral note of fragrant tea leaf that hits the high notes. The effect is ethereal but also precise. Fruit comes from two parcels, one planted in 1958 and the other in 1969, and the blend is half of each fermented together. Fruit was picked on October 1st, and the wine saw 24 days on the skins. The first year this wine was produced is 1961. The Rocche di Castiglione site has 35% sand with marl soils that continue to evolve, kicking out more new sand. Only 3,728 bottles exist, and that’s the bad news.”
Vietti Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2021 750ml $269 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 98+ points “You could argue that this is the wine with the fasting growing quality trajectory because this vineyard site is one of those rare places in the appellation that appears to improve despite (or more likely because of) a changing climate. Ravera enjoys an open panorama (at 400 to 440 meters in elevation) that extends to the snow-capped Alps and benefits from cooler air currents, coupled with an amazing quality of light that you notice with the naked eye. The 2021 Barolo Ravera saw its fruit harvested later than the other wines, on October 11th, and continued with a classic Vietti-style fermentation with 20-plus days of skin contact. Simply put, what Ravera offers is complexity (and strength) with hints of bergamot, citrus, herbs, mineral and salt over a tightly concentrated mouthfeel. The quality of the tannins and the freshness of this 2021 are impressive, and that citrusy note continues with tangerine skin and kumquat. Production is 8,700 bottles.”

Dominio IV The Imagination Series ‘Ocean Meets Forest’ Estate Pinot Noir 2020 750ml Was $29, Now $19 special, 11 bottles in stock now
Patrick Reuter, Owner/Winemaker Note “During the summer the Pacific Ocean and the Willamette Valley engage in a daily conversation regarding the weather. Pinot Noir records the dialog in its berries. In the morning, the clouds of the sea creeps into the valley’s forests and vineyards engaging in light chit-chat. The mid-day Sun usually dominates the conversation. By the evening, casual banter has changed to the wind’s whipping whorl of discussion that thickens the skin of the fruit and leaves behind the freshness of acid. Clouds, sun, and wind have a distinct and wonderful influence on the wines of the Willamette Valley, enjoy your own conversation over a glass of “Ocean Meets Forest”.”

Wine Enthusiast 92 points “This biodynamic fruit has been fermented and aged in a mix of concrete egg and oak barrels, 10% new. Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2021 Chardonnay Sophie’s Vineyard comes from an isolated vineyard near the town of Yoncalla in the Umpqua Valley, planted in the late 1970s with Draper and Wente selections. Matured in oak and finished with four months in stainless steel, it has fresh scents of green pear, quince and citrus blossom with undertones of almonds, flint and honey. The light-bodied palate is creamy and plush with gently nutty fruits and a long, refreshing finish.”

White Walnut Estate ‘North Blocks’ Chardonnay, Dundee Hills 2021 750ml Was $49, Now $39 special, 17 bottles in stock now
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 95+ points “The 2021 Chardonnay Estate North Blocks is dynamic, energetic and built for the cellar. It unwinds slowly from initial matchstick aromas to yellow peaches, ginger, meringue, jasmine and fresh green herbs. The medium-bodied palate features continually unfolding flavors that range from nuts and honey to ripe citrus. Its linear acidity and flinty character give it a shimmery feel, and it has a very long, kaleidoscopic finish. It will be long lived in the cellar.”
Despite intense demand and top-tier quality, Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot wines are still reasonably affordable for Burgundy. The wines are very classically made, with intense minerality framed by gentle fruit. Oak use is tasteful and the wines always show the personalities of their terroirs in spades. Collectors know these reward handsomely with time in the cellar, and stock up accordingly.
Pillot’s family has farmed grapes in Chassagne for four generations, and he studied under his father before taking over the domaine in 1991. He has constructed a new cave for cellaring, expanded vineyards and has made thoughtful modifications to the domaine’s winemaking and vineyard practices. Tending of the 25- to 100-year-old vines is low impact, with no herbicides used, simple pruning and vine training methods employed and manual harvest. In the winery, the wines are fermented and aged in barrel (the whites see around 10 – 30% new oak). The wines are aged on the fine lees for 12 months, racked and aged for an additional six months.
What results are incredible deals, if scarce and slowly climbing in price. That makes now the best opportunity to lock in great pricing.

Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Rully ‘La Chaume’ Blanc 2023 750ml $44.50 pre-arrival special, 18 bottles available
Importer Note “Jean-Marc has been able to access fruit in this terrific appellation in the northern part of the Côte Chalonnaise from parcels owned by an old friend with whom he served in the military. La Chaume–from a large 41-hectare lieu-dit–is straightforward in its personality and thickly fruited but nonetheless offers attractive minerality and ample acid. This is given a proper 18-month élevage just like Jean-Marc’s pricier wines in the Côte de Beaune, and its modest 20% new oak is already well-integrated.”

Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Rully ‘Les Gaudoirs’ Blanc 2023 750ml $59 pre-arrival special, 18 bottles available
Importer Note “Les Gaudoirs is situated on a limestone plateau, and this cuvée comes from a parcel of 30-year-old Chardonnay planted in extremely stony, pebbly soils. It wears its 20% new oak very well (Jean-Marc is particularly deft in his balancing of wood and wine), and offers electric acidity and a salty, palate-staining minerality. It’s a crystalline and stylish wine very much in line with his Chassagne-Montrachet crus, and it offers tremendous value.”

Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot ‘Les Raclots’ Blanc, Rully Premier Cru 2022 750ml $49 pre-arrival special, 4 bottles available
Importer Note “Jean-Marc’s friend’s parcel in Les Raclots is 60 years old, planted in the appellation’s classic clay-limestone terrain. This cuvée offers a saline impression with good power and depth of fruit, and a sense of underlying richness that stops short of viscosity. Les Raclots more than holds its own against some of Jean-Marc’s more gras-oriented Chassagne-Montrachet 1er crus, and it will age terrifically.”

This cuvée offers a saline impression with good power and depth of fruit, and a sense of underlying richness that stops short of viscosity. Importer Note “This wine is produced from the sole holdings of the Pillot family in the neighboring village of Puligny. Les Noyers Bret vineyard lies just downslope of Le Montrachet and its assorted hyphenations, and Jean-Marc owns a small parcel of vines between 50 and 100 years old here. Often among the most elegant of his wines (as befits the appellation), this is classical and precise, with truly outstanding length and a palate-coating intensity which swells toward the finish.”

Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet Les Masures 2023 750ml $94.50 pre-arrival special, 12 bottles available
Importer Note “Pillot owns half a hectare of Chardonnay in this well-positioned lieu-dit, which sits just below premier cru Champs-Gains on the slope. One third of his vines here were planted in 1950, one-third in 1990, and one-third in 2010. This is a classically rendered Chassagne-Montrachet, one which deftly balances rich, mouth-filling fruit with a powerful mineral thrust, and it carries a bright acidity in the finish which gives it length and breed.”
Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Les Chenevottes, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru 2023 750ml $128 pre-arrival special, 2 bottles available
Importer Note “This cuvée is from the northernmost holdings of the domaine in Chassagne as it fronts onto the border with Saint-Aubin and Puligny. It is here that Pillot reveals the more elegant side of Chassagne. A small holding (0.29 hectares, vines planted in 1950) that yields a wine that is generous and silky with more citrus notes than the cuvées from the southern edge of Chassagne. A barrel, or 300 bottles, is allocated for our use in the USA.”
Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Morgeot Les Fairendes, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru 2023 750ml $145 pre-arrival special, 2 bottles available
Importer Note “Among the crus, Morgeot is known for its broad-shouldered wines, often the most rich and unctuous of Chassagne. In this case, Jean-Marc’s vines are located within the most renowned sector of Morgeot known as Les Fairendes, a–vineyard within a vineyard.” Poorer topsoil here facilitates a more profound mineral expression than is found in its surrounding area. Pillot owns a quarter-hectare of vines planted in 1970, and he has purposefully begun harvesting it a bit earlier the past few vintages to counterbalance the intense richness this site tends to engender. Les Fairendes delivers an appealing combination of textural generosity and firm acidity that characterizes the overall house style here–richness with finesse that elevates it above its more rustic colleagues.”
Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Les Macherelles, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru 2023 750ml $128 pre-arrival special, 2 bottles available
Importer Note “Les Macherelles sits just to the south of the premier cru Les Chenevottes in the northern sector of Chassagne-Montrachet, immediately north of the village itself. Pillot’s 0.28 hectares of vines here were planted in the early 1950s, with a portion replanted in 1988, and this cuvée presents a remarkably stony nose, with focused, lean, strikingly refined flavors of lime zest and sea salt.”
Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Les Vergers, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru 2023 750ml $145 pre-arrival special, 2 bottles available
Importer Note “Jean-Marc farms half a hectare of vines planted in the late 1940s in this premier cru, which sits immediately above Les Chenevottes and Les Macherelles on the slope, flanking them both. Always a standout in the lineup, it offers a nose of lemon-lime and quinine, and its minerality–while nonetheless formidable–melds sublimely into the fruit, contributing to an overall impression of seamless power.”

Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet Mes Vieilles Vignes Rouge 2020 750ml $41.90 pre-arrival special, 17 bottles available
Importer Note “Jean-Marc produces a remarkable red Chassagne-Montrachet from just over a hectare of Pinot Noir vines planted in 1960, and this old-vine cuvée is noteworthy in its complexity—particularly for a villages-level wine. Exceptionally structured, it nonetheless offers a purity of fruit, plus a gently earthy, brambly edge which speaks clearly of its Chassagne origin … a village that should be more recognized for the high quality of its red wines, this being a prime example. 100% whole-cluster.”

“Here too there is plenty of petrol character suffusing the ripe and equally fresh aromas of rosemary oil, essence of pear and lemon rind. Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2022 750ml $499 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Importer Note “Jean-Marc Pillot typically makes two barrels a year from fruit purchased from his friend Blair Pethel of Domaine Dublère; Blair spent a year working alongside Jean-Marc and has generously allowed him access to a small part of his vineyard (a parcel formerly farmed by the Rollin family, our vignerons in Pernand-Vergelesses). Aromatically complex, honeyed, with wild herbs, mint and chamomile, the Corton-Charlemagne is massively scaled–both intensely mineral and nearly unctuous in its sappiness of fruit–and its 50% new oak is all but swallowed by the wine’s sheer concentration. We are fortunate to receive 5 cases of this a year for the US.”
Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Bourgogne Rouge Les Grandes Terres 2021 750ml $39 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Importer Note “Jean-Marc owns a parcel Pinot Noir in the village of Remigny, just south of Chassagne-Montrachet, and produces an exemplary Bourgogne Rouge from his 65-year-old vines there. Given a proper 12-month élévage in used barrels, this Bourgogne is succulent and exuberant, with wild berry fruit, energetic tannins and an overall impression of vibrant silkiness.”
