Bordeaux’ Christian Moueix in Napa

Dominus & Ulysses

Christian Moueix is an iconic winemaker best known for his legendary Bordeaux wines from Château Petrus in Pomerol. Moueix brought his expertise and French winemaking skills to Napa Valley, founding Dominus in Napa Valley and quickly began racking up 100-point reviews.

His vision has shaped Dominus into the force it is today. Despite its French heritage, the wine is defiantly California in tone and style, combining waves of rich fruit and beautiful aromatics with enough tannin to ground the wine. Practicing both dry and organic farming, Christian Moueix’s Dominus produces one of the most terroir expressive wines in the United States.

The sister estate, Ulysses, is no slouch either. This single vineyard, purchased by Christian Moueix in 2008, is located in Oakville at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountain Range. Just like Dominus, the Ulysses vineyard is organically farmed with no irrigation, no small feat given climate change.

The resulting wines are iconic: avidly collected by enthusiasts who give the bottles pride of place in their cellars. Don’t miss a great opportunity to pick up your new statement bottle, or to back-fill your collection! These illustrious gems won’t disappoint, whether on display in your cellar or open on your table.

“Dry farming, gentle extractions and minimal use of new French oak are some of the cornerstones of the approach employed by proprietor Christian Moueix and winemaker Tod Mostero in crafting these exquisitely beautiful Cabernets.” -Antonio Galloni, Vinous

“Situated on an alluvial fan coming down out of the Mayacamas and formerly part of the historic Charles Hopper Ranch, [Ulysses] covers 40 acres of the Oakville AVA, planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon (90%), with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Dry-farmed and newly certified organic (2021), one of the goals is to express the terroir differences between this site and the Napanook (Dominus) vineyard. The Ulysses Cabernet Sauvignon is made and matured—in approximately 40% new French oak—at Dominus.” -Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate

“The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (90%) with the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Incredible aromatics of red and black currants, spring flowers, graphite, camphor, and cedar define the aromatics, and it’s incredibly polished and elegant on the palate, with medium to full body, gorgeous tannins, and a great finish. This is another awesome 2019 that matches ample richness and depth with a terrific sense of finesse. Drink bottles over the coming two decades.”

Dominus Estate Christian Moueix, Napa Valley 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $359, that’s $341.05 at 5% off and $323.10 at 10% off, 1 bottle in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 100 points
“One of the legendary Dominus, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is unquestionably in the same league as the 2018, 2016, 2015, 2013, 2010, and 1991, and to my mind, wine simply doesn’t get any better. Sporting a dense purple hue as well as an incredible perfume of blackcurrants, crushed stone, cedar pencil, smoke tobacco, and baking spices, it’s rich, full-bodied, and voluptuously textured, with ripe yet building tannins. It reminds me slightly of the 2010 (maybe the 2013), and I suspect it will have a similar evolution. Hide bottles for 7-8 years, and it will evolve gracefully for 30+ years. Hats off to the team of Christian Moueix and director Tod Mostero.”

Dominus Estate Christian Moueix, Napa Valley 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $349, that’s $331.55 at 5% off and $314.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 98 points
“Aromas of blackcurrants, black cherries, hints of graphite, wet earth, and lavender. Sandalwood. Full-bodied with an impressive and refined structure that runs deep and vertical in the wine. Chewy. Hints of chocolate and hazelnut at the end. Needs five or six years to soften.”

Dominus Estate Christian Moueix, Napa Valley 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $319, that’s $303.05 at 5% off and $287.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent 100 points
“Composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Dominus was harvested from September 29 to October 10. It was aged in 40% new oak. Deep garnet-purple colored, the nose slowly unfurls to unveil beguiling floral notes of candied violets and rose oil over a core of crème de cassis, blackberry pie, and plum preserves, giving way to notions of licorice, Indian spices, iron ore, and crushed rocks. Full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with taut, muscular black fruit layers, intertwined with gorgeous floral and exotic spice accents, and framed by firm, finely grained tannins with seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral-laced. Tightly coiled with so much latent energy waiting to explode, this is a spectacular expression of the vintage and Napanook vineyard. Still tightly coiled, give it a good 6-7 years in the cellar before broaching, and allow it a few hours in a decanter if consumed before 2032.”

Dominus Estate Christian Moueix, Napa Valley 2018 375ml Displayed Price: $219, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 16 half-bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator #1 Wine of the Year in 2021!
Jeb Dunnuck 100 points
“The flagship 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon checks in as 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot brought up in 40% new French oak. With an essence of Cabernet-like character in its darker currants, green tobacco, cedar, graphite, and floral aromas and flavors, this gorgeous wine is full-bodied and has bright yet integrated acidity, polished tannins, and a great, great finish. It’s just gorgeously put together and a magical, flawless wine. It’s going to take a decade to hit maturity but will evolve for 40-50 years in cold cellars. It is as good as it gets in classic, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon!”

Dominus Estate Christian Moueix, Napa Valley 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $299, that’s $284.05 at 5% off and $269.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98+ points
“The 2017 Dominus is one of the truly epic, grand wines of the vintage. Rich, dense and explosive, with tremendous concentration and sheer power, the 2017 Dominus captures all the personality of this site along with the natural opulence of the year. Inky dark fruit, lavender, menthol, licorice, plum, gravel and a host of dark spice notes infuse the 2017 with seemingly endless layers of nuance. Over the last two years I have tasted several hundred Napa Valley Cabernets, both from barrel and bottle. There is no question that Dominus belongs among the elite in 2017; it is simply a breathtaking wine. Certainly readers looking for a Napa Valley Cabernet to cellar should put Dominus at the top of their lists.”

“Pale orange. Finely etched red berry, citrus zest and floral aromas, along with building herb and mineral flourishes. Taut and nervy in the mouth, offering sappy strawberry, cherry and tangerine flavors that show fine delineation and spicy lift. Closes firm and right, with persistent red fruit notes and a refreshingly bitter edge.”

Gramona ‘Mart’ Xarel-lo Vermell Rosat, Penedes, Spain 2020 750ml Was $28, Now $19, 4 bottles in stock now
Eric Solomon Imports Note
“Xarel-lo, Vermell Certified organic CCPAE and biodynamic DEMETER. The pale color of this rosé comes from a 48-hour maceration before pressing. With this additional skin contact, combined with the already high levels of antioxidants present in the juice of this variety, Mart cannot only be enjoyed in its youth (peaches and strawberries) but it has the capacity to develop for several years in the bottle as more pink peppercorn nuances emerge.”

Weingut Karlsmuhle Kaseler Nies’chen Kabinett Riesling, Mosel 2019 750ml Was $19, Now $16, 19 bottles in stock now
No reviews available for the 2019 vintage. 2018 review provided for reference.
David Schildknecht-Vinous 90 points “Pear, apple, quince, white currant and lime signal on the nose that this wine originated with crunchier and higher-acid Riesling berries than did the corresponding Kabinett feinherb. That is confirmed by a bright, tangy palate impression, though buoyancy is accompanied by quite pronounced sweetness, which generates a bit of edgy tension with the wine’s tart and tangy aspects. A lovely thread of honeysuckle perfume runs through this whole performance. And the aforementioned tension proves reasonably productive, inasmuch as the lightly sweet-sour finish is invigoratingly nippy in its evocations of apple skin and currant seeds. It’s also lusciously fruity and admirably clear. You could certainly mount a convincing case that this wine is Spätlese-typical, but then, that’s true about a great many vintage 2018 Rieslings that are labeled “Kabinett,” including some truly delicious ones. (Drink between 2020-2030).”

“The 2018 Riesling Bürgergarten “VDP. Erste Lage” needed three bottles to convince me until it opened clear, pure and intense, with crushed stones and fresh ginger aromas on the nose. Pure, fresh and bright on the palate, this is a lithe, lush and salty dry Riesling with refreshing mineral grip and tension on the finish. Tasted in Haardt, December 2019.”

Muller-Catoir Haardter Herrenletten Riesling Trocken, Pfalz 2018 750ml Was $36.50, Now $28, 33 bottles in stock now

“This shows a little bit of oomph, with powerful acidity cutting through the creamy notes of apricot, roasted pineapple and grapefruit. Ginger and tarragon details emerge midpalate and linger on the persistent, well-rounded finish. Almost there, but better to wait a few more years. Best from 2022 through 2032. 115 cases imported.”

Muller-Catoir Mandelgarten Riesling Trocken, Pfalz 2018 750ml Was $33, Now $28, 36+ bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 91+ points
“The 2018 Riesling (Gimmeldinger) Mandelgarten “VDP. Erste Lage” is pure, fresh and fine but also ripe and aromatic on the nose. The palate is pure, fresh and straight, less juicy now than the 2017 but nuanced and stimulating due to an earlier harvest. Stimulatingly salty and piquant on the finish. Tasted in Haardt, December 2019.”

“Very ripe but coolingly mint-infused and muskily peony-tinged peach and fig inform the nose and the overtly sweet, glossy palate. The inner-mouth perfume and herbal essences lend the long finish an almost ethereal cast that complements its sense of alcoholic levity. (Drink between 2021-2030)”

“Crushed dill and coriander meet with bright citrus, loquats and pears. Only off-dry and very balanced with a well-judged component of acidity doing wonders for the mineral, expressive finish. Dialed-in and beautiful to drink now, but better to cellar for a decade. Drink now.”
