Cayuse Sale

A Champagne Native Turned Walla Walla Whisperer

Stock Up & Save On:

Cayuse

If you find yourself in Eastern Oregon, you might be surprised to find one of the hottest cult winemakers of Walla Walla: Christophe Baron. This Champagnois-turned-Oregonian is the man behind some of Walla Walla Valley’s finest wines that are nearly impossible to source.

Though mostly associated with Washington state, a quirk in geography means the bottom smidge of this Valley is in Oregon. That smidge contains a subregion of the Valley: The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater. And Baron more or less put it on the map.

His Walla Walla portfolio now includes Grenache, Syrah, Tempranillo, and more sourced from Oregon and Washington (don’t worry, we’re placing all his wines on sale). Representing the pinnacle of the region’s reds, we’re never surprised when they rake in top notch scores.

Cayuse Vineyards Camaspelo, Walla Walla Valley 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $129, that’s $122.55 at 5% off and $116.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 94 points
“A cabernet sauvignon–based blend with some merlot and just a dash of tempranillo, this offers an attractive dark-fruited nose with hints of crushed walnuts, bay leaves, blackcurrant bush and wet stones. The palate is framed and tight yet finely textured, showing a juicy flow of fruit underneath a firm and chewy tannin structure. Long and tightly wound. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try in 2028.”

Cayuse Vineyards Impulsivo Tempranillo, Walla Walla Valley 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $138, that’s $131.10 at 5% off and $124.20 at 10% off, 23 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 95 points
“Enticing aromas of black cherries, blackberries, licorice, cloves, green chilis and dark chocolate. It’s full-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Beautifully deep, fleshy and inky, with excellent freshness, too. Spicy and attention-grabbing. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”
Jeb Dunnuck 94+ points “Tight and closed, with notions of bloody blue fruits, iodine, rose petals, and cedarwood, the 2020 Impulsivo hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a nicely balanced, layered mouthfeel, and ripe tannins that emerge on the finish. I like its concentration, and its tannins are polished and beautifully integrated, but this is in need of a solid 4-5 years of bottle age to show its full potential. It should have 20-25 years of overall longevity when all is said and done.”

Cayuse Vineyards Impulsivo Tempranillo, Walla Walla Valley 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $159, that’s $151.05 at 5% off and $143.10 at 10% off, 8 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points
“Another expressive red from this estate, the 2021 Impulsivo (100% Tempranillo) has a great nose of both red and black fruits as well as iron, sandalwood, and violets. A rich, medium to full-bodied, structured wine on the palate, it has building tannins, a nicely balanced, layered mouthfeel, and plenty of meaty, gamey, umami character on the finish. It will benefit from just a few years in the cellar and will evolve for at least two decades.”

Cayuse Vineyards Impulsivo Tempranillo, Walla Walla Valley 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $149, that’s $141.55 at 5% off and $134.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 95 points
“Very expressive and savory, this offers wild berries, plum skins, crushed coffee beans, wet forest floor and hints of raw mushrooms. It’s full-bodied, meaty and structured yet layered with delicious fruit, the mineral freshness adding vibrancy and energy. Firm and tightly packed in the finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try from 2029.”

Cayuse Vineyards Armada Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $149, that’s $141.55 at 5% off and $134.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 97+ points
“One of the bigger, richer wines in the lineup, the 2021 Syrah Armada Vineyard comes from a high-density vineyard located just beside the cellar and was brought up all in demi-muids. This deeper ruby/plum-hued Syrah boasts a big, masculine bouquet of smoked red and black fruits, sauteed mushrooms, cured meats, iron, and cold fireplace nuances (it almost has a Graves-like character) that flows to a medium to full-bodied, rich, concentrated Syrah with terrific overall balance, ripe tannins, and a great finish. As with the other 2021s here, it needs lots of air to show at its best and will ideally be given 4-5 years in the cellar. It’s going to hit its 20th birthday in fine form.”

Cayuse Vineyards Cailloux Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $129, that’s $122.55 at 5% off and $116.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 96 points
“Complex and tightly wound, this syrah, co-fermented with just a dash of viognier, offers a broad spectrum of aromas. Smoked meat, black olives, crushed violets and thyme are layered with blackberries and a hint of iodine. The palate is deep and structured, balancing juicy acidity with fine but broad and dusty tannins. The savory finish lingers, showing cracked pepper and turned earth. Very tight and compact, this needs some time in bottle. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try from 2028.”

Cayuse Vineyards En Cerise Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $135, that’s $128.25 at 5% off and $121.50 at 10% off, 2 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 96 points
“This meaty and savory red shows aromas and flavors of black plums, sage, licorice, bacon fat, iodine and capers. It’s full-bodied, open and deliciously salty, with ripe, supple tannins. Increasingly salty and it persists for a very long time. Around 70% whole-cluster fermentation. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable already, but better from 2027.”

Cayuse Vineyards En Chamberlin Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $135, that’s $128.25 at 5% off and $121.50 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 96 points
“This has an earthy, savory profile with aromas of smoked bacon, plum skins, charcoal, black peppercorns and stones. Full-bodied and wide on the palate with massive, compact tannins. It’s refined and textured yet finishes tight and firm, lingering with notes of iodine and seashells. From biodynamically grown grapes. Better from 2028.”

Horsepower Vineyards Fiddleneck Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $179, that’s $170.05 at 5% off and $161.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Owen Bargreen 100 points
“‘Fiddleneck Vineyard’ Grenache shows very different flavor and aromatic profiles — yet is clearly equal in overall quality. This Grenache was sourced from this stony site first planted back in 2015. Exuding class, this delivers a Chateau Rayas quality to this wine in terms of its purity of red fruits. The nose takes on hauntingly good range, offering pomegranate seed, kelp and blood orange zest tones alongside wet rock and hints of beef drippings. The aromatic range is mind-bending. The palate is liquid silk in its red fruit purity, showing dizzying underlying finesse and a generous mouthfeel. A total stunner, enjoy this beautiful wine now and over the next eight years to come.”

Horsepower Vineyards High Contrast Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $169, that’s $160.55 at 5% off and $152.10 at 10% off, 2 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 96 points
“The 2020 Syrah High Contrast Vineyard is youthfully restrained, with blackberry and clove offset by wet stone and sage. This is soft and enveloping, with silken textures and ripe black fruits, all energized by brilliant acidity. This finishes with a salty flourish, gripping the palate with youthful tension. Spiced citrus mingles with silty tannins as savory hints of rosemary fade. This is so giving today, yet also beautifully balanced for the cellar.”

Horsepower Vineyards High Contrast Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $179, that’s $170.05 at 5% off and $161.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Owen Bargreen 98 points
“The 2022 Horsepower Vineyards ‘High Contrast Vineyard’ Syrah is sourced from vines set on a combination of ancient cobblestones and silty loam soils. Stored for 15 months in all neutral oak barrels, this opens with suggestions of black tea, Mandarin orange zest and exotic spices alongside beef brisket, Kalamata olive, charcuterie and smoldering stones. The palate is plush and soft with a pillowy texture and beautiful underlying acidity. Salty and savory, enjoy this beauty now and over the next eight years.”

Horsepower Vineyards Sur Echalas Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $179, that’s $170.05 at 5% off and $161.10 at 10% off, only 1 bottle in stock now
James Suckling 97 points
“What a wild syrah, with such intensity on the nose. Bacon fat, ashtray, black pepper, black olives, celeriac and cumin. So smoky and delicious, it packs a punch while remaining fresh and poised, with a medium to full body. Long and attention-grabbing. Almost 80% whole clusters. From biodynamically grown grapes. Fantastic to try now, but best from 2027.”

Horsepower Vineyards The Tribe Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $169, that’s $160.55 at 5% off and $152.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 97+ points
“The 2016 Syrah The Tribe is largely in the same mold with a gamy, meaty, backward profile. Smoked meats, earthy dark fruits, ground pepper, and wood smoke are all present in this medium to full-bodied, concentrated Syrah that’s going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and cruise for 15-20 years.”

Horsepower Vineyards The Tribe Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $169, that’s $160.55 at 5% off and $152.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points
“Beautiful notes of red and black raspberries, tobacco, plum sauce, loamy earth, and loads of floral notes emerge from the 2017 Syrah The Tribe Vineyard, another tight, closed wine that’s going to benefit from bottle age. Medium to full-bodied, with notable freshness as well as plenty of underlying structure, it reminds me of Côte Rôtie from the Cote Blonde lieu-dit with its incredible floral character as well as its seamless texture. Beautifully done and one of the standouts in the lineup in 2017, give bottles a healthy decant if drinking any time soon, and my money is on it benefiting from 2-3 years of bottle age and evolving for 15-20 years or more.”

Horsepower Vineyards The Tribe Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $179, that’s $170.05 at 5% off and $161.10 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Anthony Mueller-Wine Advocate 97 points
“The 2019 Syrah The Tribe Vineyard starts with a stemmy, fresh and savory nose with a delightful meaty aroma and dusty florals before wafting with a succulent raspberry skin essence. Medium to full-bodied, the Syrah displays a vibrant mineral tension and spicy mouthfeel before subtle flavors of dried herbs sway with a firm tannic structure. The wine continues to evolve and unpack over the long, lingering finish with a pleasing smoky nuance and persistent peppery note. Give it a few more years in the bottle before opening. Bravo!”

Owen Bargreen 98 points
“An amazing edition of this wine, the 2022 Horsepower Vineyards ‘The Tribe Vineyard’ Syrah comes from this stony location outside of the town of Milton-Freewater. Hoisin sauce and BBQ beef rib aromatics parade with shades of lavender, bay leaf and rich boysenberry fruits on the nose. The palate is polished and soft with a seamless texture and excellent sense of weight despite the coolness of the vintage. Concentrated and intense, enjoy this heady version of ‘The Tribe’ now and over the next eight to ten years.”

Wine Enthusiast 98 points
“This fantastic Grenache could reunite America if served everywhere with beef stew and crusty bread. Garrigue-like aromas of rosemary and thyme unite with the salinity of a Mediterranean sea breeze and a dollop of black cherries. Boysenberry, barbecued pork and white-button mushroom flavors join with a clean mouthfeel and crisp acidity.”

No Girls La Placiencia Vineyard Tempranillo, Walla Walla Valley 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $128, that’s $121.60 at 5% off and $115.20 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Owen Bargreen 96 points
“An outstanding Tempranillo wine, the 2021 No Girls ‘La Paciencia Vineyard’ Tempranillo shows off a velvety texture with dark currants that mingle well with black cherry compote, kumquat zest, oyster sauce, wet stone and violets. Full-bodied and filled with freshness, and gorgeous flavor range, this. Tempranillo has a long life ahead of it.”
