Casanova di Neri & Fontodi

We’re placing two of the most elite producers in Tuscany on sale now: Casanova di Neri in Brunello and Fontodi in Chianti. Not familiar? Let’s explore!

Casanova di Neri

Casanova di Neri is one of Italy’s truly elite modern producers—an icon of Brunello. Their Tenuta Nuova and Cerretalto are profound, highly-sought after wines. The Cerretalto is an event of a wine.  Produced only in the best years, with extra aging before release, it’s one of the true landmark wines of Italy.

Fontodi

As one of Tuscany’s top estates, Fontodi crafts some of the finest wines in the world. The wines effortlessly showcase the high-quality and harmonious base material. Its terroir is unique and a perfect home for its Sangiovese vines. The estate’s vineyards are planted along a high elevation hill of Conca d’Oro (“the golden shell,” named for its shape) and its south-facing amphitheater. Here, the high elevation and shape of the land offer long and warm summer days and a wild diurnal temperature swing. The calcareous clay and schist soils are optimal for producing ripe yet balanced Sangiovese.

Fontodi’s flagship bottling, the Flaccianello della Pieve, is one of Tuscany’s most sought-after Sangiovese wines. Its class seems inevitable when you consider that each year it is made with only the finest vineyard blocks from their exquisite holdings. Built for the long haul, this is an ideal Sangiovese for a long-term cellaring and a rival to Soldera, Biondi-Santi Riserva, Pergole Torte, Valdicava’s Madonna… you name it.

These are gorgeous wines to wow lovers of complex, terroir-driven reds, now on our three-day sale.

James Suckling 98 points
“A vivid and bright red with intense blueberries and raspberries. Floral undertones and tons of citrus, too! Full-bodied, dense and layered. Polished tannins and fantastic fruit. The muscularity of the structure is what gives this wine focus and intensity. So serious for the vintage. Give it time to show its greatness. Drink in 2022.”

Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $115, that’s $109.25 at 5% off and $103.50 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“Here’s a treat from Casanova di Neri. Aged in tonneaux for 30 months, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is fleshed out and rich with pretty layers of dark fruit, dried blackberry, spice and cured tobacco. There is a point of sour cherry in this vintage that folds into crushed flower, balsam herb, licorice and crushed stone. The bouquet is classic, but the Casanova di Neri magic touch comes through thanks to the wine’s balance and pretty intensity. I can’t, however, overlook a powerful 15% alcohol content that leaves its mark. This is a production of 67,740 bottles.”

Casanova di Neri ‘Giovanni Neri’, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $269, that’s $255.55 at 5% off and $242.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 points
“Here’s an exciting and important new addition to the Casanova di Neri portfolio. The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Giovanni Neri is shapely and enriched in an extremely pleasing manner. The Neri family has perfected its approach to concentration and fruit weight over the many years they have been making excellent wines. This wine gives the appearance of being full-bodied, but ultimately, it reveals a very elegant side. Ripe cherry and blackberry cede to oak spice, toast and crushed white stone. The tannins are softly pliable and sweet. Compared to the estate’s other wines, Tenuta Nuova and Cerretalto, Giovanni Neri is finer and more delicate, even fragile in personality. Some 5,400 bottles were made in this inaugural release.”

Casanova di Neri Cerretalto, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012 750ml Displayed Price: $379, that’s $360.05 at 5% off and $341.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 98 points
“Flavors of medicinal herbs, juniper, macerated cherry, plum, tobacco and spice are the hallmarks of this intense red, which is ripe and concentrated, yet sleek and focused. Spice notes chime in on the long, minerally and firmly tannic finish. Best from 2023 through 2040.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 98 points “The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto offers a prolonged, flowing and carefully massaged drinking experience that drapes over the senses with some studied intensity and lots of intriguing complexity. This wine nails that perfect balance between power and elegance (that elusive exchange that so many winemakers hope to achieve) with effortless precision. Bold cherry fruit and spice are tightly woven together. In the mouth, the wine shows texture, depth and succulence. Generally speaking, this is not my favorite vintage in Montalcino, but this wine suddenly made me forget that thought.”

“Among the many excellent estates located in Panzano is Fontodi, one of the finest wine estates in the world…” –Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Fontodi Vigna del Sorbo, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96+ points
“The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is a dense, packed wine. It is also surprisingly, almost shockingly backward. That is probably a good thing for its long-term aging prospects. Readers hoping to get an early glimpse into the 2017 before it shuts down may have a hard time doing that, as today acids and tannin dominate. I expect the 2017 will be stellar in another 4-5 years and drink well to age 25-30 if not longer. Proprietor Giovanni Manetti gave the 2017 18 months in barrique followed by 6 months in cask.”

Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $159, that’s $151.05 at 5% off and $143.10 at 10% off, 32 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points
“The 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve is fabulous. Dark, sensual and enveloping, the 2017 captures the essence of the house style in its textural richness and baritone inflections. Black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, licorice and chocolate infuse the 2017 with tremendous richness. The 2017 spent 18 months in barrique followed by 6 months in cask, the same aging regime as the Vigna del Sorbo, but with a bit more new oak. That approach worked very well, as the Flaccianello stands out for its exceptional textural elegance and finesse. It is a positively stellar wine.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 points “The Fontodi 2017 Flaccianello della Pieve is a standout wine of the dry vintage. This pure Sangiovese opens to a dark garnet color with more visible concentration and density compared to recent past editions. This is a beautiful wine with pliant tannins, dark fruit richness, balanced acidity and a fruit-forward 15% alcohol content. The wine is big and bold when weighed on the Flaccianello scale (and even more so when weighed on the Sangiovese scale) with dark cherry, plum, spice, violet, chalk and campfire ash. Despite that power and inner opulence, this wine adds that zesty Sangiovese character with fresh acidity and an energized approach. This Flaccianello is whole and complete with the natural firmness and structure to hold it steady during the aging process. A small part of amphorae-aged fruit is added to the blend.”

Burghound 91-93 points
“Outstanding! Smoky reduction currently overshadows the underlying fruit though there is fine freshness and verve to the nicely delineated middle weight flavors that are supported by firm acidity on the clean, dry and linear finale. Like the 2018 version, this attractively persistent effort could use better depth, but the underlying material appears to be present for that to occur.”

Domaine Dujac Les Gruenchers, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru 2019 750ml $599, 1 bottle in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92-94 points
“Wafting from the glass with aromas of rose petals, raspberries, blood orange and cherries, the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers is medium to full-bodied, velvety and perfumed, with a rich and ample core of fruit, succulent acids and chalky grip on the finish. Seysses feels that he picked this old-vine parcel a touch late, and it’s certainly a rather ample, dramatic rendition of this cuvée.”

Domaine Dujac Les Gruenchers, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru 2021 750ml $499 special, 1 bottle in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 91-93 points
“Offering up aromas of sweet plums, berries, orange zest, spices and peonies, the 2021 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers is medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless, with impressive mid-palate fat, lively acids and powdery tannins.”
