It’s no secret that we’ve long adored the wines from Christophe Baron.
This Champenois-turned-Oregonian more or less put The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater on the map. Biodynamic farming. Ancient, rocky river bed. Horse-drawn plough. Tiny production. All result inwines that stop you in your tracks…
If you can actually get your hands on them.
His Walla Walla portfolio now includes Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet, and red blends sourced from Oregon and Washington. Representing the pinnacle of the region’s reds, we’re never surprised when top notch scores are released, just pleased as punch that we continue to be able to offer you these mailing list-mostly gems.
Though mostly associated with Washington state, a quirk in geography means the bottom smidge of this Valley is in Oregon. That smidge contains a subregion of the Valley: The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater. And Baron more or less put it on the map. His Walla Walla portfolio now includes Grenache, Syrah, Tempranillo, and more sourced from Oregon and Washington (don’t worry, we’re placing all his wines on sale). Representing the pinnacle of the region’s reds, we’re never surprised when they rake in top notch scores.
As if the ancient river beds and old-school energy of Cayuse wines wasn’t revelation enough, Christophe has pursued, under the banner of Horsepower Wines, an even more archaic and labor intensive approach. Vines are planted “Sur echalas,” on upright posts, instead of wire trained tractor rows, and all of the vineyard work is managed by hand, and horse drawn equipment. The results are impressive; energetic, deeply layered, and supremely cellar-worthy wines.

94 POINTS JAMES SUCKLING “A cabernet sauvignon-based blend with some merlot and just a dash of tempranillo, this offers an attractive dark-fruited nose with hints of crushed walnuts, bay leaves, blackcurrant bush and wet stones. The palate is framed and tight yet finely textured, showing a juicy flow of fruit underneath a firm and chewy tannin structure. Long and tightly wound.”

Regular Retail: $159.95
Vinopolis Price: $139.00
10-in stock (additional vintages available)
99 POINTS OWEN BARGREEN “The world-class 2022 ‘Armada Vineyard’ Syrah come from this tight-spacing site that was planted at 1800 vines per acre. This location in the stones is now over 20 years of age. Green peppercorns and allspice dusted pork shoulder notes combine on the nose alongside Satsuma orange rind, soy sauce and shades of wild blackberry combine on this ultra-complex nose. The palate is refined and luxurious in terms of tension, depth and tension. Very rocky and mineral-laden.”
HORSEPOWER “FIDDLENECK” GRENACHE 2022 750ML
Regular Retail: $199.95
Vinopolis Price: $179.00
6-in stock (additional vintages available)
100 POINTS OWEN BARGREEN “‘Fiddleneck Vineyard’ Grenache shows very different flavor and aromatic profiles — yet is clearly equal in overall quality. This Grenache was sourced from this stony site first planted back in 2015. Exuding class, this delivers a Chateau Rayas quality to this wine in terms of its purity of red fruits. The nose takes on hauntingly good range, offering pomegranate seed, kelp and blood orange zest tones alongside wet rock and hints of beef drippings.”
HORSEPOWER “HIGH CONTRAST” SYRAH 2022 750ML
Regular Retail: $199.95
Vinopolis Price: $179.00
3-in stock (very limited-additional vintages available)
98 POINTS OWEN BARGREEN “The 2022 Horsepower Vineyards ‘High Contrast Vineyard’ Syrah is sourced from vines set on a combination of ancient cobblestones and silty loam soils. Stored for 15 months in all neutral oak barrels, this opens with suggestions of black tea, Mandarin orange zest and exotic spices alongside beef brisket, Kalamata olive, charcuterie and smoldering stones. The palate is plush and soft with a pillowy texture and beautiful underlying acidity. Salty and savory”
HORSEPOWER “TRIBE” SYRAH 2022 750ML
Regular Retail: $199.95
Vinopolis Price: $169.00
6-in stock (additional vintages available)
98 POINTS OWEN BARGREEN “An amazing edition of this wine, the 2022 Horsepower Vineyards ‘The Tribe Vineyard’ Syrah comes from this stony location outside of the town of Milton-Freewater. Hoisin sauce and BBQ beef rib aromatics parade with shades of lavender, bay leaf and rich boysenberry fruits on the nose. The palate is polished and soft with a seamless texture and excellent sense of weight despite the coolness of the vintage. Concentrated and intense.”
