Arnot-Roberts

“Arnot-Roberts is one of the most exciting young wineries in California, or anywhere for that matter. Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts have put together a compelling set of wines that highlight the personalities of some of the cooler-climate sites in Northern California.” –Antonio Galloni

Small producers such as Arnot-Roberts are the pioneers of the “New California” movement. Started by childhood friends Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts in 2001, they’ve quickly established themselves as some of the best producers of restrained and elegant small-parcel wines. In 2013 the San Francisco Chronicle named them “Winemakers of the Year” in recognition of the quality and consistency of the wines they’re producing, and they’ve racked up professional accolades ever since.

So, what is the “New California” movement? Started around 2000, it rejects industrialized wines with no sense of place. Instead, the emphasis is on wines with verve and backbone, nothing soft and oaky. The acidity and tannin evoke the great wines of France over their saccharine peers. These are serious wines that are built to age—which is how they’ve developed such a following.

In the cellar, these blossom into wines that rival the best in the world. We get small allocations every year, only a couple of barrels are made of each wine, but wanted to share the love. Hop on over to our webstore to select your allocation.

We offer twelve in-stock Arnot-Roberts options on sale now, including:

Arnot-Roberts Randle Hill Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Yorkville Highlands 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $36, that’s $34.20 at 5% off and $32.40 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“The gnarled old Sauvignon Blanc vines at the Randle Hill Vineyard were planted in 1982 in the Yorkville Highlands of Mendocino County. This rugged and remote site is farmed organically on a steep hillside of eroding shale, situated at 1,100’ elevation, where it enjoys warm days and cool nights. We love the mineral driven Sauvignon Blancs of France’s Loire Valley and have long hoped we would find a site here in California that could grow Sauvignon Blanc that leaned in that direction. We knew that vine age, clone, elevation, soil, and farming all had to be right for us to achieve that expression and this vineyard met all the criteria. The resulting wine exhibits mineral and saline flavors balanced with a hint of herbaceous and floral aromatics.”

Arnot-Roberts Watson Ranch Chardonnay, Napa Valley 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $44.50, that’s $42.28 at 5% off and $40.05 at 10% off, 20 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points
“The 2022 Chardonnay Watson Ranch shows lovely textural depth and resonance. Dried pear, spice, menthol, dried flowers and herbs fill out the layers nicely. The balance here is sublime. This is an especially savory, earthy Chardonnay, with fruit pushed into the background. The 2022 is all class.”

Arnot-Roberts Rosé, California 2024 750ml Displayed Price: $26, that’s $24.70 at 5% off and $23.40 at 10% off, 24 bottles in stock now
Winemaker’s Note
“We began making Rosé from Touriga Nacional in 2010. We were compelled by the grape’s deep color, brilliant acidity and aromatic complexity even at low sugar content. Touriga is a late-ripening Portuguese variety that needs some heat to mature, and we have sought out vineyards suited to this hearty variety.”

Arnot-Roberts Clajeux Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Chalk Hill 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $128, that’s $121.60 at 5% off and $115.20 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Decanter 94 points
“Arnot-Roberts’ longest-standing vineyard partner since 2003, Clajeux, is a hillside site in Chalk Hill, just above the Russian River Valley. The 2022 Cabernet is basket pressed to neutral French oak barrels for 22 months. It showcases a powerful blend of sweet and tart blue and blackberries, complemented by a hint of tangy marmalade. On the nose, it offers aromas of violets, dried spices, and a bouquet garni. The well-drained, rocky volcanic soils in the vineyard impart a chalky minerality that supports the young tannins in the wine. With an inviting 12% ABV, this well-rounded Cabernet has a bright future if you allow it a few years in the bottle. Only four barrels were produced.”

Arnot-Roberts Fellom Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon, Santa Cruz Mountains 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $128, that’s $121.60 at 5% off and $115.20 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Fellom Ranch is the most complete of the three Arnot-Roberts Cabernets. It shows the ripeness of the year in its extroverted personality. Black fruit, leather, licorice, chocolate, bay leaf and spice saturate the palate. There is an exotic quality here that is palpable. Savory notes are buried, but in exchange, this will drink well with minimal cellaring.”

Arnot-Roberts Gamay Noir, El Dorado 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $28, that’s $26.60 at 5% off and $25.20 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Winery Not
e “We first began working with Gamay in 2011 as a collaborative effort with our friend Rajat Parr under the RPM label, until the final vintage for the RPM project in 2015. The original sources were Barsotti and Witters vineyards grown in the granitic soils of the Sierra Foothills, situated at around 3000’ elevation. In 2022 we were fortunate to begin working with Gamay from the Ascona Vineyard high up in the Santa Cruz Mountains at 2,500′ elevation. We employ the carbonic maceration technique where the uncrushed grapes are sealed up for several days, allowing the berries to begin fermentation from the inside out. This method is used by many of our favorite Beaujolais producers and adds a spicy fruitiness that infuses freshness and energy in the resulting wines.”

Arnot-Roberts Kirschenmann Vineyard Zinfandel, Mokelumne River 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“In the spring of 2012, our friends Tegan and Olivia Passalacqua purchased an incredible old vineyard east of Lodi in the tiny town of Victor, California named Kirschenmann. The site is located on an oxbow of the Mokelumne River, which over centuries has deposited loads of fine, sandy, granitic loam from erosion of the Sierra Nevada mountains to the East. The vineyard was planted in 1915 on its own roots and is primarily Zinfandel, with a little Carignane, Cinsault and Mondeuse Noir spread throughout the block. The old, twisted, dry-farmed vines are thriving under the watchful eye of Tegan, one of the foremost experts on old vines in California. Tegan also produces his own wine under the Sandlands label and is the current winemaker for Turley Vineyards in Napa. We are lucky to be offered one ton of this fruit per year allowing us to vinify just 2-3 barrels annually.”

Arnot-Roberts Red, California 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points
“The 2022 Red Wine California is a very pleasant, fruity wine, especially in this vintage. About 50% of the wine was aged in cement. That, along with early bottling, preserves forward fruit and a good bit of freshness. Sweet floral and spice notes lift the mid-palate and finish.”

Chateau Coutet, Sauternes – Barsac 2015 750ml $59 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 96 points
“A heavenly dessert wine, the 2015 Château Coutet boasts a huge nose of caramelized citrus, crème brûlée, tangerine, and honeysuckle. With huge richness and sweetness, moderate acidity, a thick, fat mouthfeel and a blockbuster finish, it’s borderline over the top yet holds it together. It will be interesting to see how this evolves, but it’s undeniably gorgeous today.”

Chateau Coutet, Sauternes – Barsac 2020 750ml $49 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The 2020 Coutet is much more refined and light on its feet than it was from barrel. Tangerine peel, mint, passionfruit, white flowers and a hint of marzipan all grace this airy, wonderfully refined Barsac.”
