CALIFORNIA
Terlato Family Vineyards Pinot Grigio, Russian River Valley 2011 750ML ($21.95) Was $10.90, Now $9, 36+ bottles available
Case-12 Terlato Family Vineyards Pinot Grigio, Russian River Valley 2011 750ML ($219.95) Was $99, Now $89, 3 cases available (that’s only $8.25/bottle and the lowest listed price in the USA today!)
“Ripe and forward with Meyer lemon, lime, green apple and honeysuckle flavors. The finish is off dry and zesty in acidity. What an easy wine to drink with Asian, Ethiopian, Indian or Mexican fare, or by itself as a cocktail sipper.”–Wine Enthusiast

Hall Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($59.95) Was $39, Now $33, 36+ bottles available
Antonio Galloni 88-90 points “Hall’s 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is laced with attractive plum, mocha, licorice, spices and menthol notes. This juicy, highly expressive Cabernet Sauvignon is shaping up beautifully. It should drink well pretty much upon release.” AG

The average price is $49

Araujo Estate Altagracia Red, Napa Valley 2011 750ML ($149.95) Was $119, Now $99, 16 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2011 Altagracia is round, sexy, supple and beautiful, especially within the context of the year. Sweet red berries, mint, tobacco, savory herbs and anise meld together in a distinctive wine long on personality. With time in the glass the wine fleshes out nicely, as the flavors become darker, richer and layered. Altagracia is a blend of mostly Eisele fruit, plus a bit of Vine Hill Ranch, a well-draining site in Oakville that is among Napa Valley’s very best. The blend is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec.” WA

FRANCE-BURGUNDY
Louis Jadot Montrachet Grand Cru 2011 750ML ($419.95) Was $399, Now $349, 3 bottles available
Burghound 94-97 points “Here the nose is notably more reserved with aromas of citrus zest, spice, wood toast, fennel and spice hints. This is also a very imposingly-scaled wine with its big, muscular and wonderfully complex flavors that culminate in a long, focused and explosive finish of breathtaking length and intensity. This overtly powerful effort should reward at least a decade in the cellar and drink well for another. A ‘wow’ wine.” BH

Louis Jadot Clos Saint-Jacques, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2011 750ML ($169.95) Was $129, Now $99, 13 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 92-94 points “Good medium red. Red berries, coffee and mocha on the nose, with a note of blood orange emerging with air. Began large-scaled and spicy but rather inexpressive, but aeration brought greater sweetness of fruit and elegance, with a whiff of blood orange providing lift. Ultimately more expansive than the Estournelles but this wine will need at least a few years in the cellar following its release.” ST

Louis Jadot Clos Saint-Jacques, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2012 750ML ($219.95) Was $179, Now $149, 13 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92-94 points “The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has a fragrant bouquet: floral at first with touches of violet, later revealing a stony scents, hints of chalk dust and flint surfacing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and impressive focus. It feels composed in the mouth with good matiere, yet it remains sophisticated and tense right to the finish. There is nothing flash here, just pure quality.” WA

Domaine Faiveley Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru 2011 750ML ($349.95) Was $279, Now $239, 30 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 94 (+?) points “Medium red. Highly nuanced yet quite primary on the nose, offering scents of raspberry, underbrush, dried rose, ginger and smoky oak. Juicy, saline and quite dry, with dark berry and strawberry flavors complicated by an earthy perfume. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and excellent length. With 24 hours in the recorked bottle, this beauty showed a silkier texture and chewy, deep flavors of raspberry and spices that saturate the palate without leaving any impression of weight. A great effort for the vintage.” ST

ARGENTINA
Achaval Ferrer Finca Mirador Malbec, Maipu 2011 750ML ($119.95) Was $99, Now $79, 36+ bottles available
Wine Spectator 96 points “This pure, racy red exhibits a dark side, with layers of spice, graphite and maduro tobacco to the crushed raspberry, blackberry and concentrated cassis fruit. Needs time in the cellar. Best from 2015 through 2022.” WS

New Weekend New Arrivals

WASHINGTON
Result of a Crush Red Table Wine, Walla Walla Valley 2012 750ML ($31.95) $26 special
Wine Spectator 92 points “Supple, lithe and expressive, this taut version plays plum and currant fruit against peppery, tangy notes as the finish lingers enticingly. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier. Drink now through 2020. 850 cases made.” WS

CALIFORNIA
Joseph Phelps Vineyards Insignia, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($249.95) $189 special
Robert Parker 96-100 points “Joseph Phelps’ flagship wines include the incredibly ageworthy Insignia. The 2012 Insignia Proprietary Red is composed of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 10% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc, all aged 24 months in 100% new French oak. The vintage was of such high quality and quantity that 17,500 cases were produced. A magnificent Insignia that will be bottled in several months, it boasts an opaque purple color as well as fabulous notes of graphite, blackberries, blackcurrant liqueur, camphor, barbecue smoke and spice box. Rich, full-bodied and opulent with plenty of tannin and structure lurking beneath the extravagant generosity of fruit, this stunning 2012 should drink well for 25-30+ years.” RP

Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico DOCG 2010 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special
Case-12 Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico DOCG 2010 750ML ($249.95) $219 special (that’s only $18.25/bottle and the lowest listed price in the USA today!)
Ian D’Agata–Vinous 91 points “Bright red. Flinty red cherry and smoky underbrush on the refined nose. Classically dry and firm, this midweight Chianti delivers plenty of pure sangiovese flavor (licorice, flint, red cherry) and seems slightly more accessible to me than past versions of this wine, which usually started out life tough as nails but evolved beautifully and showed rare ageworthiness. Chianti Classico does not get any better or any more traditional than this.” ID

CVNE Compania Vinicola del Norte de Espana ‘Imperial’ Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2008 750ML ($47.95) $29 special
Case- 12 CVNE Compania Vinicola del Norte de Espana ‘Imperial’ Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2008 750ML ($499.95) $299 special (that’s only $24.92/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2008 Imperial Reserva is my favorite of the three Imperial Reservas that I tasted together as it has the perfect balance between ripeness, acidity and tannins, in a wine that is eminently elegant, but will require some time in bottle to gain complexity. The fruit leans more towards the red varieties (raspberries and strawberries), it is very spicy but the wood is almost fully integrated. Very balanced palate, with high-toned flavors that make it vibrant. Drink 2015-2021.” WA

Consider (Beyond) The Oyster:
Maritime Vibes of Muscadet

Before you – yes, you! – turn your nose at Muscadet, know that Melon de Bourgogne had its start in Burgundy. Had a few intuitive producers not chosen to move production to the western coast, Chardonnay would’ve had another bedfellow in Burgundy. It was discovered in western Loire Valley, the cool climate, favorable drainage, mineral-rich soils, and diverse soil types all served as ideal characteristics for Melon de Bourgogne – and thus, Muscadet was born.

All in the same, overproduction nearly killed the grape’s reputation outside of France. Thanks to a small band of determined winemakers within the western Loire, however, Muscadet has since enjoyed a resurgent popularity as more and more drinkers come to appreciate the purity, diversity, and age-worthiness of the wines.

The sea winds and wet climate surely help the wines to develop their characteristically salty-savory, fresh n’ bright quality. No other factor, however, is more influential than that of lees aging. Within the region, it is customary to allow residual yeasts and other sedimentary matter following secondary fermentation to rest along with the wine – this imbues a nutty-yeasty-toasty flavor, not to mention a whole lot of character in the wine.

Geographically, Melon de Bourgogne holds jurisdiction in the river banks mostly south of Nantes – from where the Loire River meets the Atlantic Ocean, and all along those nutrient-rich clay and schist and sandy soils. The glory of these wines is the bewilderingly wide range of styles and flavor profiles which can emerge: lemon verbena, sea salt, fresh flowers, garden herbs, wild mushrooms… These are some of the most charismatic wines in the universe, perhaps beyond. If Martians fermented grapes, these Muscadet would give them a run for their money.

Our Muscadet selection is small but mighty, including some of the region’s best producers. These – in both 750ml and larger format- can be found below.

Bonnet-Huteau Chateau La Tarciere Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine Sur Lie La Levraudiere 2013 750ML ($14.95) $11.90 special, 11 bottles available

Guy Bossard Domaine de l’Ecu Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine Sur Lie Granite 2013 750ML ($24.95) $19.90 special, 10 bottles available

Domaine Pierre Luneau-Papin Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine Sur Lie ‘Le L d’Or’ 1999 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 9 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 92 points “The granite soil of the vineyard is dominant in this textured, mineral wine with its kerosene aroma and its taut, almost austere acidity. While the primary fruit has gone, this is still nowhere near mature, a wine that shows considerable freshness, life, potential.” WE

Domaine Pierre Luneau-Papin Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine Sur Lie Terre de Pierre 2012 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 36+ bottles available
John Gilman 94 points “This is a great site, with a unique geological composition of red igneous rock and the 2012 is a truly brilliant bottle of Muscadet, offering up a vibrant and magically complex bouquet of tart orange, lemon, ocean breeze, kaleidoscopic minerality, gentle leesiness, citrus zest and a nice touch of lemongrass in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, pure, full-bodied and very complex, with great cut and focus, a rock solid core and outstanding length and grip on the laser-like finish. The 2010 la Butte de la Roche was probably the finest young Muscadet I have ever tasted, and the 2012 is an awfully strong follow-up. 2014-2030+.”

Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine Cuvee 4 Quatre 2010 750ML ($27.95) $24 special, 7 bottles available
Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine Cuvee 4 Quatre 2010 1.5L ($69.95) $59 special, 3 magnums available
Wine Enthusiast 91 points “The light-gold color of this wine shows its maturity. It’s a rich wine that is rounded, full and with a touch of honey. With its toasty character and full-bodied character, this is an impressive wine for drinking now.-(6/1/2015)” WE

Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine Clisson 2012 1.5L ($59.95) $49 special, 5 magnums available
Wine Enthusiast 93 points “Made for aging, this wine is structured and firm. It has a dense texture surrounded by ripe white and yellow fruits. With a touch of spice and a pepper character, it is rich, impressive and full-bodied. Drink from 2017. — R.V. (6/1/2015).”

Grange des Peres

“Élevage” is shorthand for the development and maturation of wine, akin to an upbringing. Just as wine goes through these processes – from vine to bottle – the winemaker goes through similar steps in their development. With that in mind, Laurent Vaillé is one winemaker with a very fine “élevage.”

Vaillé learned the trade from a bit of a who’s-who in French wine: his resume includes working terms at Coche-Dury, Chave, and Domaine Trévallon. He purchased his own land in 1989 in Saint-Hillaire, within the Languedoc-Roussillon. Taking dynamite to the hard limestone of his new land, Vaillé cleared out a nice little patch for his to begin his story. Sourcing vine cuttings from his former teachers – Gérard Chave gave him syrah, Marsanne, and Rousanne, while Domaine Trévallon provided Cabernet Sauvignon.

The resulting wines are bottled as “Vin de Pays de l’Herault Rouge and Vin de Pays de l’Herault Blanc,” a rather humble nomenclature for such iconic wines. The red, a blend of 40% Syrah, 40% Mourvedre, 10% Cabernet, and 10% Counoise, is a hugely textured, layered and intense wine which nods towards the great wines of the southern Rhone while remaining decidedly its own thing. Each varietal is harvested and vinified seperately before spending two years in barrel. The white of the domaine, 80% Roussane, 10% Marsanne, and 10% Chardonnay, is a refined effort of co-fermentation, barreled for malolactic fermentation, and then aged in oak.

Typically scooped up soon after hitting the market, these wines are a most perfect accompaniment to that southern French recipe you’ve been dying to whip up. Pour generously.

Domaine de la Grange des Peres Blanc, IGP Pays de l’Herault 2011 1.5L ($259.95) $219 special, 3 magnums available
VinopolNote: 80% Roussanne 10% Marsanne 10% Chardonnay. Vines are 15-20 years old. Vineyard is glacial scree and limestone.

Catch Some Trapet
Arriving Late September

Domaine Trapet Père et Fils Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 750ML ($259.95) $225 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni – Vinous 94-96 points “The 2012 Latricières-Chambertin possesses a super-classic sense of cut and energy. Black fruit, smoke, autumn leaves and new leather form the backdrop as this intense, saline-infused Burgundy shows off its vibrant, layered personality. Here, too, readers need to be prepared to be patient. The Latricières is a wine for the cellar. Trapet used 65% whole clusters. This is a great Burgundy in the making. (AG) (1/2014).”

Burghound 95 points “A somber yet elegant nose presents aromas of various dark berries, floral tones and wet stone nuances that are trimmed in subtle wood nuances. This is markedly mineral-driven with superb delineation and terrific tension on middle weight plus flavors that deliver outstanding length on the driving, youthfully austere and beautifully well-balanced finale. This is a strikingly persistent and entirely classic Latricières that is built on its minerality though note well that plenty of patience will be required. (1/2015)”AM

Wine Advocate 93-95 points “The 2012 Latricieres-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from a single 0.75-hectare parcel whose oldest members were planted in 1938. It has another very crisp and focused bouquet with fine delineation and tension – quite similar to the Chapelle-Chambertin in style but with slightly blacker fruit. The palate is tannic and structure, here with a subtle marine influence, leading to a masculine, swarthy finish. This has great persistency in the mouth. Superb. (NM) (12/2013)”

Stephen Tanzer – Vinous 94 points “Good medium red. Slightly sauvage nose and palate combine black cherry, underbrush and espresso elements, with complicating notes of pepper and truffle. Lush, seamless and filled in, offering lovely balance from the outset. Less floral and fruity than the Chapelle but even denser. Most impressive right now on the building, unflagging finish, which features noble, broad tannins and the structure to support a long and graceful evolution in bottle. (3/2015)”

Domaine Trapet Père et Fils Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 750ML ($379.95) $325 pre-arrival special
Burghound 96 points “This is ultra-cool and restrained aromatically with its airy and even elegant aromas of intensely floral, spicy and stony wild dark berry scents that are also trimmed in just enough wood to warrant commenting on. There is a gorgeous texture to the equally mineral-inflected and muscular broad-shouldered and impressively concentrated flavors that possess a Zen-like harmony on the impeccably well-balanced, moderately austere and hugely long finish. This should be genuinely wonderful if given at least a decade’s snooze in a cool cellar. I should also note that by the standards of this wine the 2012 version is not super-powerful but I very much like the sense of harmony. (1/2015)”AM

Wine Advocate 94-96 points “The 2012 Chambertin Grand Cru comes from three parcels that total a sizeable 1.9-hectares scattered on different soils and this blend includes 90% whole cluster fruit. It has an intense bouquet: blackcurrant, raspberry leaf, forest floor, minerals and orange rind that is very delineated and focused. The palate is animated and tense on the entry. This Chambertin can barely contain its energy and it just shimmers in the mouth, gradually building to a precocious red cherry and citrus peel finish, the mineralite defining the aftertaste. This is a sophisticated, cerebral Chambertin for the studious, rather than the hedonists. (NM) (12/2013).”

Stephen Tanzer – Vinous 96 points “Good medium red, a bit less dark than the Latricières. Musky aromas of redcurrant, flint, red licorice and rocky minerality lifted by a floral topnote. Enters the mouth with great breadth, then tightens up dramatically in the middle, conveying an almost 2010-like tautness to its raspberry and crushed stone flavors. Actually comes across today as less thick and sweet than the Latricières, and utterly weightless. Builds inexorably to a crescendo on the explosive, gripping back end, which leaves the palate vibrating with licorice and peppery herbs. I love the stem influence here. Should make a classic, monumental Chambertin.”

Cristom

Paul and Eileen Gerrie purchased an abandoned vineyard and a failing winery in 1992 with dreams of revitalizing the estate. Paul fell in love in Pinot fresh out of college (with a 1980 Echezeaux) and they fell in love with Oregon after attending the International Pinot Noir Celebration held in McMinnville. With advice from Mike Etzel of Beaux Freres, the Gerries found the land to fulfill their dreams.

They hired Steve Doerner as winemaker. He had worked for Calera (a distinguished California Pinot Noir producer) for 14 years and was looking for a change – Paul brought him on after convincing him of the potential in Oregon for Pinot Noir. They restored the original vineyard, which is now the Marjorie vineyard. Between 1993 and 1996, they added new plantings which are now the Louise, Jessie and Eileen vineyards. The vineyards are composed of iron-rich volcanic soils.

In the winery, Doerner uses a sparing hand in intervention: there is no chapitalization and minimal additions of acid and yeast when necessary. The wine undergoes a long and cool fermentation with minimal racking during its slow oak maturation.

Cristom Wines Available Here Now

Cristom Mt. Jefferson Cuvee Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2012 750ML ($31.95) $24 special, 12 bottles available
“Firm in texture, with fine tannins around a lean core of dark berry and roasted tomato flavors, persisting on the grainy finish. Best from 2017 through 2020.”–Wine Spectator

Cristom Sommers Reserve Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2012 750ML ($54.95) $49 special, 12 bottles available
Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Sommers Reserve will be released near the end of 2015. It offer lively red berry fruit with redcurrant and wild raspberry scents, fine delineation with cheeky hints of marmalade and orange rind. The palate is medium-bodied and almost feral on the entry, as it seems to shoot off in a different direction. Then the acidity begins to bind it all together to form a cohesive, sorbet-fresh, bay-leaf finish that is long in the mouth. It needs to develop a little more persistence on the balsamic-tinged aftertaste, but otherwise this has good potential.” NM

Cristom Wines Arriving September 11th

Cristom Eileen Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2013 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Winery note “Eileen Vineyard tends to produce a wine that is the most precocious of our four estate vineyards and it’s often the first wine we release into the market. It is always the wine we show first in a line-up of Cristom Pinot Noir. We often find them softer, meaning rounder on the palate with less minerality. Typically, Eileen is textured, layered and creamy on the palate and often recognizable by its bouquet of sweet spices.”

Cristom Jessie Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2013 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Winery note “Jessie Vineyard tends to produce Pinot Noirs that we recognize by a savory aroma that often calls to mind rare-beef. It also tends to have a very fresh and appealing scent of minerality, along with some higher tone lavender—purple flower notes. On the palate, Jessie tends towards a full mouth-feel and a deeper—darker—rounder impression. We find a certain ‘nervosity’ in this wine that describes some part of the tension between the ripe fruit and the structure of the wine.”

Cristom Louise Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2013 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Winery note “The wine is more heavily textured, dark-fruited and more concentrated in flavor than any of our other estate Pinot Noir. We often find creamy-mocha latte notes on the bouquet co-mingling with dark red fruits that are reminiscent of fresh mulberries, very ripe blackberries, plums and black cherries along with hints of chocolate. We recognize Louise by a delightful velvet texture and a full and persistent finish.”

Cristom Marjorie Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2013 750ML ($79.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Winery note “Elegant, fine-lined, and highly detailed are words that often describe Marjorie. This wine typically leads with a delightful and perfumed nose that is reminiscent of fresh-cut flowers, red fruits and sweet spices. These very ‘pretty’ aromas follow through on the palate and are supported by a firmer, yet supple, tannic structure. The oak elements can be evident in a kiss of cocoa powder on the nose or a hint of creamy vanilla on the palate but are never overt or out of balance.”

Weingut Emmerich Knoll

Located in the town of Unterloiben in the Wachau of Austria, Weingut Knoll occupies some of Austria’s most celebrated vineyards. Across 15 hectares, a stunning array of (predominantly) Riesling and Gruner Veltiner is cultivated by third-generation members of the Knoll family: Emmerich III oversees the cellar, and August is head of vineyard work.

The estate produces over 25 cuvees each year, with over half of them Rieslings – relatively many for the Gruner-thirsty Austrian. The Rieslings are planted mostly on granite bedrock, while the Gruner plantings live higher up the banks of the Danube on a rich, mixed topsoil of granite and loess.

The wines of Knoll are marked with beautifully textural, layered, aromatic qualities. We’re excited to soon have them in the shop.

Wine Advocate 94 points “Always made with botrytis grapes, the 2013 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Loibner Vinothekfullung offers a very clear and intense, though noble and fresh, aroma of honeydew melon, pineapples and hints of lychee. Very rich in extract and highly concentrated on the palate, this opulent yet still well-balanced wine is one to be enjoyed in small sips rather than in bottles (at least when it’s so young). This is an impressively rich and velvety textured wine, indeed, though it lacks the tension and freshness of the Schütt at the moment.” WA

Pure, rich and elegant on the palate this enervating mineral, vibrant and complex Riesling reveals a great elegance and lingering salty finish. Purity and terroir in the Wachau? It really exists! This Kellerberg Riesling is long!” WA

Weingut Emmerich Knoll Ried Schutt Riesling Smaragd, Wachau 2013 750ML ($79.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 95+ points “Purity, density and minerality – this trilogy seems to be the leitmotif of the 2013 Dürnsteiner Riesling Smaragd Ried Schütt, which reveals a clear and deep bouquet of ripe fruit aromas and some vegetal notes. Pure and elegant on the palate, the Schütt Riesling combines complexity and intensity with elegance and persistence for a great and expressive Riesling monument of the Wachau. It is even finer than the Kellerberg Riesling Smaragd.” WA

The Prisoner Wine Co. ‘The Prisoner’, Napa Valley2013 750ML ($44.95) $36 special, 19 bottles available
Robert Parker 92 points “The 2013 Proprietary Red Blend The Prisoner is a creative blend of 44% Zinfandel, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Petite Sirah, as well as Syrah, Grenache and Charbono. This dense, full-bodied, opulent red reveals gutsy, rich, peppery, meaty, blackberry, blackcurrant and licorice notes. A savory, lusty, heady red, it begs for a grilled steak or a big, juicy hamburger. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.” RP

Case-12 Trentadue La Storia Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley 2012 750ML ($239.95) $199 special, 5 cases available (that’s only $16.58/bottle!)
Trentadue La Storia Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley 2012 750ML ($21.95) $18 special, 23 bottles available
Winery note “Our 2012 La Storia Cabernet is a wine worthy of aging, showing abundant varietal aromas and flavors of blueberry, blackberry and black licorice, with a hint of herbs and ripe olives. The predominately French oak aging contributes aromas of cinnamon, vanilla, cocoa dust and slight smokiness. The mouth feel is fresh and juicy with balanced acidity and very soft tannins for a young wine. Due to the relatively lower sugar at harvest the alcohol content is modest and the acidity is relatively high and that will extend the longevity of this wine. Age 4 – 7 years.”

Josh Raynolds-Vinous 88 points “Light, bright pink. Spice-accented red berries and orange on the incisive nose and in the mouth. Starts off taut and linear, then fleshes out quickly, picking up a subtle touch of anise with air. The spicy note repeats on the finish, which is firmed by a jolt of tangy acidity.” JR

Castello di Argiano Sesti Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2010 750ML ($99.95) $75 special, 36 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “This pure expression of Sangiovese opens with aromas of rose petal, leather, game, Mediterranean herb and wild berry. The vibrant, full-bodied palate delivers layers of crushed Morello cherry, raspberry, cinnamon and grilled herb alongside firm, polished tannins and bright acidity. It boasts character and depth. Drink 2017–2030.” WE
Antonio Galloni 94 points “Sesti’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a wine of real class and personality. In fact, the 2010 is one of the best wines I have tasted from this estate in Sant’Angelo in Colle. Iron, sweet red cherries, wild flowers and earthiness are some of the many notes that inform a juicy, plump Brunello that already drinks well. The 2010 is quite forward and fruit-driven, but there is good underlying complexity as well as enough acidity to ensure a decade-plus of fine drinking. My only quibble is that the aromatics could be a little more focused, but that is a relatively small critique for a wine that delivers this much pleasure.” AG
