Castello di Argiano Sesti Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2010 750ML ($99.95) Was $79, Now $75, pre-arrival special
Case-6 Castello di Argiano Sesti Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2010 750ML ($479.95) $419 pre-arrival special (that’s only $69.83/bottle!)
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “This pure expression of Sangiovese opens with aromas of rose petal, leather, game, Mediterranean herb and wild berry. The vibrant, full-bodied palate delivers layers of crushed Morello cherry, raspberry, cinnamon and grilled herb alongside firm, polished tannins and bright acidity. It boasts character and depth. Drink 2017–2030.”
Antonio Galloni – Vinous 94 points “Sesti’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a wine of real class and personality. In fact, the 2010 is one of the best wines I have tasted from this estate in Sant’Angelo in Colle. Iron, sweet red cherries, wild flowers and earthiness are some of the many notes that inform a juicy, plump Brunello that already drinks well. The 2010 is quite forward and fruit-driven, but there is good underlying complexity as well as enough acidity to ensure a decade-plus of fine drinking. My only quibble is that the aromatics could be a little more focused, but that is a relatively small critique for a wine that delivers this much pleasure.”
James Suckling 94 points “Wonderful aromas of dried flowers and fruit. Hints of mushrooms and earth. Full body, ripe and juicy fruit and a berry, spice and cherry aftertaste. Delicious now. Why wait?”

Case-12 Castello di Ama ‘Ama’, Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2010 750ML ($259.95) $219 special
Wine Enthusiast 93 points “This exquisite wine offers classic Sangiovese aromas of violet, wild cherry and tobacco leaf. The palate delivers bright red cherry, mint and cinnamon notes along with vibrant acidity and bracing but supple tannins. It’s extremely elegant and should develop complexity over the next few years.” WE
Wine Spectator 90 points “Cherry, licorice, spice and mineral flavors give this dimension, while the lively acidity lends focus. Balanced and long, with berry fruit and spice details gracing the finish. Drink now through 2020.” WS

GERMANY
Donnhoff Estate Riesling, Nahe 2013 750ML ($24.95) $18.80 special
Case-12 Donnhoff Estate Riesling, Nahe 2013 750ML ($279.95) $199 special (that’s only $16.58/bottle!)
The Wine Advocate “The 2013 Riesling is quite coolish and mineral on the nose, very clear with white stone fruit aromas. Light-bodied, salty and piquant, this is a sexy Riesling, a dying sort of Riesling, a Oberhausen Kabinett off-dry, a delicious, stimulatingly piquant wine which is almost completely exported. An extremely quaffable wine.”
Terry Theise notes “I think these wines show a paradox analogous to the thread-count in linens: the more there are, the smoother it feels. Each of these wines has so much sheer material the result is they feel not soft but caressing. That said though, this ’13 has greener flavors than usual, in keeping with the vintage character. It remains the world’s greatest wine value, and it seems that some of you have also made this discovery, as we have very few cases unspoken for as I write.”

Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg “Tonschiefer” Riesling Trocken, Nahe 2013 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
Case-12 Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg “Tonschiefer” Riesling Trocken, Nahe 2013 750ML ($319.95) $249 special (that’s only $20.75/bottle!)
The Wine Advocate “The 2013 Riesling Trocken Tonschiefer is more sophisticated than the Gutsriesling, displaying pure, flinty slate aromas along with bright fruit aromas. Quite round and intense on the palate, this is medium-bodied, slightly piquant Riesling with a certain power, juice and length. A mouthful of wine with Spätlese level.”
Terry Theise notes “The estate wine from (mostly) Leistenberg which grows on a sandy slate called Tholeyer Schiefer. This is as limpid as spring-water, until it rears up with radicchio and with a slatey char. It’s for connoisseurs of the art of bitterness, in a jacket of cool freshness and the gleam of sunlight on the surface of the water.”

Turley Wine Cellars
Arriving August 25th

*Not available through our website. To order, please call or email.

Turley Wine Cellars Duarte Vineyard Zinfandel, Contra Costa County 2013 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 90 points “Dusty rose petal and raspberry aromas lead to fresh and supple flavors of cherry pie, toasted sage and fresh pepper. A pleasure to drink. Drink now through 2020.” WS
Antonio Galloni 89-91 points “The 2013 Zinfandel Duarte Vineyard is bright, lifted and aromatic throughout. This is one of the more vibrant, saline wines in the range, yet there is lovely sweetness and depth to the fruit. Dollops of Carignane and Mataro round out the blend in this intriguing Contra Costa Zinfandel-based red.” AG

Turley Wine Cellars Pesenti Vineyard Zinfandel, Paso Robles 2012 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2012 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard is wonderfully lifted and precise, especially within the context of Paso Robles. Hints of licorice, anise and orange peel add gorgeous aromatic presence to a core of sweet red stone fruits. Already open and highly expressive, the Pesenti is another fabulous wine that will reward readers with a long and wide drinking window.” AG

Turley Wine Cellars Mead Ranch Zinfandel, Atlas Peak 2013 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Robert Parker 96 points “From a high-elevation vineyard in Atlas Peak, the 2013 Zinfandel Mead Ranch (16.1% alcohol) has its origins at a site planted in 1880, although Larry Turley’s block dates only from 1970. The vines are head-pruned and the soils purely volcanic. One the profound Zinfandels from Turley in 2013, this wine is locked-and-loaded, so to speak – powerful, packed, rich, and full-bodied, with blackberry, blueberry, black raspberry and cherry fruit in abundance. It is obviously full-bodied, thick, even unctuously textured, while it seems to have slightly less acidity than some of the other cuvées – or at least, that’s how it presents itself. This is a stunner to drink over the next 10-12+ years. It is a great Zinfandel and one of the most sumptuous and exotic in the portfolio.” RP

Arriving Mid-September
Domaine Servin Butteaux, Chablis Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($34.95) $26 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 89-90 points “The 2013 Chablis Butteaux is all about subtlety. Here the citrus flavors take on an attractive sense of oiliness and pure texture, with white flowers, white pepper and mint overtones that add brightness. Today the Butteaux is a bit compact, especially on the finish, but that is a relatively small quibble within the context of the year. Saline notes add complexity to the chalky finish.” AG

Domaine Servin Vaillons, Chablis Premier Cru 2013 750ML ($34.95) $26 pre-arrival special

Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 90-93 points “(from particularly healthy, high-quality fruit in 2014, noted Marc Cameron): Pale yellow with green reflections. Subtly complex aromas of lime leaf, minerals and peppermint. Then rich, round and generous in the mouth, offering salty flavors of lime, white flowers and crushed stone. This seriously broad dry wine is strong in dusty extract. A step up in length from the foregoing premier crus, finishing dry and classic, with no austerity.” ST

Germany – By the Vineyard
Erderner Treppchen & Erdener Prälat

The small German village of Erden (population 379!) lies along the meandering bank of the Mosel. Three vineyards lie within its borders: Erderner Treppchen, the largest vineyard, and Erdener Prälat, alongside it, are both situated on terraced slate across the river from the village. Erdener Busslay, the third, lies alongside tiny bed and breakfasts and the tiny village’s center. Though small – Erden itself occupies a mere 1.5 square miles – these vineyards account for some of the most beautiful wines of all the Middle Mosel.

Erdener Treppchen slops southward, allowing long stretches of exposure. The soil comprises of deep layers of iron-infused slate, steeply terraced from the river’s banks up to the rough and rocky summit of nearby hills. The vineyard’s terrain inspired the name, based off of ‘treppe’, or ‘staircase’, in German.

The nearby Erderner Prälat occupies a mere 2.2 hectares. Entirely south-facing, the vineyard is surrounded by cliffs which insulate the vines – as a result, Prälat is one of the warmest plots in the region. Over time, it has also become one of the most sought-after vineyards. Given the limited space, only a few winemakers have access to the vineyard.

One of the finest producers working in these vineyards is Weingut Meulenhof. Within their Prälat and Treppchen holdings, vines have been trained to posts – mostly ungrafted. Fruit is harvested by hand, and scraps from pruning are made into compost for the vines. Vinification is done separately parcel-by-parcel, with native yeasts used for fermentation.

Also working in the area is the Christoffel family, who has been making wine since the 17th Century. The four hectares they work are mostly split between Treppchen and a plot at the very top of Prälat, where winemaking has been recorded since the 7th century.

At Christoffel, many plantings are over 100 years old, coming from their original rootstocks. Similar to Meulenhof, Christoffel vinifies each parcel separately, designated by a star system. Wines are pressed whole-cluster, cool-fermented in large wooden casks, and allowed to rest on the fine lees for a brief time before early bottling.

These wines are marked by brilliant clarity, structure, and balance. Vines benefit greatly from the iron-rich soils, with resultant wines brimming with minerality and well-aligned acidity. Great aging potential lies here, though there’s nothing wrong with popping a cork anytime soon…

Erdener Treppchen and Erdener Pralat Wines Available Here Now

Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett, Mosel 2013 ($29.95) $24 special, 17 bottles available
Joel B. Payne–Vinous 92 points “Karl-Joseph Christoffel’s 2013 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett is the Mosel at its finest: pure, finely chiseled and unbelievable elegant! It is a tribute to how Riesling blossoms on slate soils. Delicately off-dry, it is my top value pick for Germany in 2013.” JP

Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spatlese, Mosel 2012 ($39.95) $29 special, 18 bottles available
Wine Spectator 90 points “A supple and seductive sweetie, with peach cobbler, cream and glazed apricot flavors. Red currant and ripe melon notes appear midpalate, leading to a spicy finish. Drink now through 2030.” WS
Terry Theise notes: “Now this is explosively expressive. If I say “apple and slate” yet again, it’s boring but true. It’s the combo of hi-def clarity and torque, firmness and brilliance yet many-layered density, and this goose-flesh tingle threaded through it all—that makes it uncanny.”

Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spatlese, Mosel 2013 ($39.95) $29 special, 22 bottles available
Wine Spectator 90 points “Shows a raciness to the pure-tasting flavors of fresh-cut green apple and white currant, with grapefruit accents. Hints of mustard greens show on the richly spiced finish. Drink now through 2034. 35 cases imported.” WS

Meulenhof Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spatlese 2010 750ML ($28.95) $23 special, 1 bottle available
Wine Spectator 91 points “Subtle bouquet of white peach, apple blossom and mint. Quite soft and gentle, with sweet apricot fruit nicely balanced by ripe but understated acidity. Well-balanced sp atlese with spices and mineral salts on the finish.”

Meulenhof Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spatlese #11 2011 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 10 bottles available

Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese ** “Herzlay” 2012 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 12 bottles available
Terry Theise note “That suffix “Lay” is local dialect for slate. This is from an old ungrafted parcel among the cliffs, and the wine has its usual swollen mass, firm richness and length. I’m glad of the relatively moderate sweetness; it thins the hugeness of fruit and makes it tinkle down the palate in snaky rivulets of salty terroir and tart apple. Also a sponti.”

Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese ** “Herzlay” 2013 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 11 bottles available
Wine Spectator 90 points “Offers lots of pastry puff notes to the airy peach and melon flavors. Spicy and lush, with a pillowy finish that lingers with dried ginger accents. A delicate style. Drink now through 2038. 5 cases imported.” WS

Weingut Jos. Christoffel Jr. Christoffel-Prum Erdener Pralat Riesling Auslese *** 2004 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 5 bottles available
Mosel Fine Wines 90+ points “This is a nicely made wine with great balance and freshness. The remarkable thing is that a very subtle touch of botrytis smoke kicks in on the mid-palate and finish. This should develop remarkable well even if the wine may remain somewhat on the austere and structured side. 2012-2024.”

Rich, candied papaya fruit shows a velvety texture, with an element of minty acidity keeping the palate fresh. Dense yet light on its feet, with the mineral salts providing spice on the long, elegant finish. Gorgeous!” ST

Rodney Strong

In 1959, celebrated American dancer Rod Strong followed his second passion and founded a winery in Sonoma County. It was only the 13th winery bonded in this new region. He pioneered planting varietals that would later put California on the winemaking map: Chardonnay in what would become Chalk Hill and Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley. In 1974, he released the first single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon of Sonoma County: Alexander’s Crown.

Today, the Klein family continues Rod’s tradition of innovation and excellence: they expanded and modernized the winery, adding temperature-controlled cellaring, new fermentation tanks, and even built solar panels to improve their sustainability efforts. They added Symmetry, a Bordeaux-style red blend, to the illustrious lineup. The Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from winemaker-selected lots from vineyards in the Alexander Valley. Each lot is hand-harvested, fermented separately and age in French oak barrels. Before being included in the final cuvee, each lot is tasted and graded before a final determination is made.

It boasts gorgeous depth and a rich, sumptuous personality. Higher-toned floral notes add lift and brightness on the finish. The style is decidedly on the opulent side, yet all of the elements are nicely balanced. The 2009 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 23 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. Portugal’s Caves São João

Caves São João was founded in 1920 by the brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa as a wine cellaring company dedicated to Douro region wines and liqueurs. After the government prohibited production of Port from outside O’Porto limits in the 1930s, the company shifted its focus toward Bairrada table wines and naturally sparkling wines, with the assistance of renowned French oenologist Gaston Mainousson.

In the 1950s, the brothers launched Frei João, an elite label of the Bairrada region, and Porta Dos Cavaleiro, of the Dão region. In the 1970s, they acquired the Quinta do Poco do Lobo estate where they grow their own grapes. According to Hugh Johnson, the company is a “small, traditional firm [known] for very good old-fashion wines. Reds can age for decades.”

After the Portuguese colonies gained independence in the 1950s, the market for their wines shrunk. The previous generation mostly held the wines, so the collection grew and aged. Recently, older wines have become fashionable in Portugal, and the company has jumped at the chance to do business. Caves São João is recognized for its quality winemaking with a traditional bent and excellent ageability.

São João have a number of library releases and have been known to hold onto wines for a long time. Though quite limited in quantities, these releases are a testament to the quality and age-worthiness of their wines. Newest to the shop is their Tinto Reserva from 1990, a blend sourced from both Bairrada and Doa; the wine is a deeply-nuanced expression of both time and terroir, and an excellent starting (or finishing!) point in exploring the domain.

Jacopo Biondi-Santi Castello di Montepo ‘Sassoalloro’ Toscana IGT 2009 750ML ($39.95) $26.60 special, 9 bottles available
Wine Advocate 91 points “A landmark wine in the landscape of Italian enology, the 2009 Sassoalloro is a pure expression of the special Sangiovese Grosso clone BBS11 that the Biondi Santi family has safeguarded in the Tuscan territories of Montalcino and Scansano respectively. The 2009 vintage still needs time to flesh out and find its footing. Red rose, dried blackberry, moist clay and button mushroom all make subtle appearances on the feminine bouquet. Firm structure is present to carry this wine forward over the years. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2022. ” WA

Case-12 Brovia Sori del Drago Barbera d’Alba 2013 750ML ($349.95) $289 special, 2 cases available (that’s only $24.08/bottle!)
Brovia Sori del Drago Barbera d’Alba 2013 750ML ($31.95) $28 special, 12 bottles available
Importer note “Perennially, this is my favorite Barbera I represent. These 70 year old vines are from the famed “Garblet Sué” parcel (more commonly referred to as “Bricco del Fiasc”) in Castiglione Falletto. Any other estate would have long since cashed in by planting Nebbiolo. This vineyard is planted at almost 1,000 feet elevation which is about as high as Falletto gets. As always, juice is fermented at a relatively brisk temp and then racked into stainless steel for 18mos. Simple, perfect Barbera.”

Case-12 Brovia Barolo DOCG 2011 750ML ($619.95) $519 special, 1 cases available (that’s only $43.25/bottle!)
Brovia Barolo DOCG 2011 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 8 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 90-92 points “The 2011 Barolo is sumptuous and expressive, with all of the immediacy that is so typical of the year. Dark red cherry, plums, hard candy, spice and tobacco are all woven into a layered finish graced with soft contours and fabulous overall balance for a straight Barolo. As Brovia fans know, the straight Barolo is 70% young-vine fruit from Brea (above 20 years of age), plus the wine that is left over when the single-vineyard Barolos go into cask.” AG
