Featured New Arrival

Jacques Lassaigne Millesime Brut Nature 2006 750ML ($119.95) $99 special
Wine Advocate 93 points “Sourced from Le Cotet, La Grande Cote and Les Paluets – which last-named is southeast-facing and arguably the top site in Montgueux, opines Lassaigne – his 2006 Brut Nature is intriguingly and alluringly scented with fresh lemon and apricot, peony and narcissus, rowan and pistachio, along with sea breeze intimations and a pungency of struck flint. Startlingly silken and creamy, yet focused and vibrantly juicy this adds a sort of shimmering, crystalline sense of stoniness to an almost kaleidoscopically interactive finish. It ought to merit following for 6-8 years. Incidentally, Lassaigne believes that a purer expression of vintage character will always be achieved by maturing this cuvee in tank.” DS

Jacques Lassaigne ‘La Colline Inspiree’ Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut NV 1.5L ($179.95) $149 special

The next best price is $175.99

Jacques Lassaigne ‘Le Cotet’ Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut NV 1.5L ($179.95) $149 special
Wine Advocate 92 points “The Lassaigne NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Le Cotet L100713 – from an especially thinly soiled lower-slope parcel – incorporates 10% of older reserve wines from barrel with its 2009 base, 10% of which was also aged in barrel. Apple and grapefruit offer aromatic pungency and exuberant juiciness on the palate, but this cuvee is dominated by stony, saline, chalky and otherwise mineral elements. Toasted nuts, incisive cress and a twist of lemon rind lend invigoration; musky notes intrigue; and maritime salinity milks the salivary glands in a long, mouth-coating finish. The Montgueux-typical sense of overt density manages not to weigh down the wine or sap its formidable sense of energy and vivacity. This should prove enormously versatile at table over the next 3-5 years.” DS

Chateau de Cabriac
New Releases Newly Arrived

Corbieres is an AOC within the Southern French region of the Languedoc-Roussillon: mostly known for its rich and herbal red wines. The Corbieres region produces only small amounts of white and rose wines. The northern portion, known as Alaric, has plains to the north and south-facing slopes along the Montagne d’Alaric. This is an excellent area for Mourvedre as well as other Southern French varietals such as Grenache and Carignan. In the center of the AOC is the Corbieres-Boutenac AOC, created in 2005. Corbieres-Boutenac is recognized for producing high quality wines from the ten communes that surround a limestone ridge covered in garrigue (a term for the scrubland herbs such as rosemary and lavender that is often used to describe aromas found in the wines).

We are excited for the second release of this estate’s wines chosen by the former owner and winemaker of Evesham Wood, Russ Raney. Russ has been a long-time part-time resident in this remarkable region. The domaine is composed of 70 hectares, with 25 hectares in the Corbieres AOC and 45 hectares considered Vin de Pays. The family was one of the first to introduce Syrah and Mourvedre into the AOC. The micro-climate allows for a slower maturation of the grapes, resulting in balance and in intense flavors without over-ripeness.

Russ Raney Reports: “Chateau de Cabriac is located in the northwestern section of the rather large Corbières AOC – just downhill from the imposing Mount D’Alaric and facing the foothills of the Cavennes. The micro-climate here is still very much Mediterranean – surrounded by the typical garrigue landscape. They are a medium-sized family owned estate which produces both red & white wines under the Corbières appellation as well as ‘Pays d’Oc’ wines. The congenial proprietors are Jean and his wife, Michèle Cibeins. Jean is a native of the region as a result, understands well what is required to produce typical wines from this terroir (primarily limestone and sandstone). The predominant grape varieties used in their blends are: Carignan, Grenache and Syrah for red and Vermentino (Rolle) for whites. I was very much impressed by the ‘restraint’ and authenticity of their wines, which tend to not be so viscous and alcoholic as some from this warm region. Considering Cabriac’s long tenure, they have kept their pricing very reasonable.”

Domaine Dujac

Jacques Seysses, a former apprentice at Domain de la Pousse d’Or, purchased the land which would become Domaine Dujac in 1967. The land, previously owned by Marcel Graillet, were 4.5 hectares within Morey-Saint-Denis. Seysses went on to purchase plots along some of the finest sites: Echezeaux, Romanee St. Vivant, Bonnes Mares Chambertin among them. He also holds some old-vine parcels within Clos de la Roche and Clos Saint-Denis.

Jacques tended to vinify whole-clusters and 100% new oak; when his sons took over in 1999, the style changed rather drastically to include partial destemming and an increased dependence on used oak. Domaine Dujac began to employ organic farming on some of their vineyards in 2001. Pleased by this
preliminary experiment, they converted to fully organic, with certification, in 2008.
The estate aims for elegant wines with great complexity and, as Jacque’s son Jeremy phrases it, “charm.” Macerations tend to be shorter, hovering around 12 days, as the brothers Dujac have prioritized finesse ahead of alcohol and tannin. The wines are marked by much of the charm Jeremy Dujac speaks of, winning great critical acclaim and bearing a great deal of energy and vibrancy. We’re excited for a new round of arrivals from the domain, listed below.

Domaine and Maison Dujac Arriving Tuesday, October 13th

Maison Dujac Fils & Pere Morey-Saint-Denis 2013 ($99.95) $79 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 90-92 points “The most complete of the village wines in the range, the 2013 Morey St. Denis is super-appealing. Precise and lifted, the 2013 impresses with terrific overall balance and class. The long, silky finish gives the 2013 considerable appeal, even at this early stage. Savory herbs, mint and a dash of licorice add the final notes of complexity.” AG

Domaine Dujac Chambolle-Musigny 2013 750ML ($119.95) $89 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 89-91 “Dujac’s 2013 Chambolle-Musigny bristles with energy, tension and nuance. Bright red cherries, plums, flowers and mint flesh out in a village-level Burgundy of true distinction. The 2013 is a blend of fruit from Drazeys and Fremières.” AG

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
The average price is $93

Domaine Dujac Les Beaumonts, Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru 2013 ($319.95) $279 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 92-94 points “The 2013 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts is a powerful, deep wine endowed with superb textural richness. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, licorice and new leather all find support in beams of underlying minerality that give the wine its energy and pulsating salinity. The Beaux Monts is shaping up to be a jewel.” AG

Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2013 750ML ($499.95) $399 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 94-97 points “Another superb, multidimensional wine, the 2013 Clos de La Roche boasts remarkable complexity, starting with exquisite aromatics, finely-sculpted fruit and firm yet polished tannins. Layers of flavor flesh out in all directions in a resonant, expansive Burgundy endowed with pure pedigree. There is a lot going on in the glass, although it is the wine’s totally sublime sense of harmony that is most captivating at this early stage. I can’t wait to taste the 2013 from bottle.” AG
Domaine and Maison Dujac Available Here Now

Maison Dujac Fils & Pere Chambolle-Musigny 2011 ($119.95) $79 special, 1 bottle available
Stephen Tanzer 88 points “Good bright red. More perfumed on the nose than the village Morey, offering cherry and floral aromas. Juicy, fruity and energetic, with red fruit flavors accented but not dominated by pepper and herbs. Finishes with firm, slightly dry-edged tannins and good lift.” ST

Domaine Dujac Aux Combottes, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2011 ($249.95) $199 special, 3 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 91+ points “Captivating aromas of pristine red fruits, minerals and underbrush, plus a whiff of porcini. Juicy and penetrating on the palate, with terrific high-pitched precision to the red raspberry and cherry flavors. Lovely cut here, as well as a tannic spine that calls for four or five years of aging. Jeremy Seysses noted that with the estate’s clonal material, their grapes are riper. “We start pulling leaves on the north side of the vines not long after the flowering, and we get thicker skins,” he told me, adding that the estate’s 2011s are tannic wines.” ST

Paolo Bea

Paolo Bea Pagliaro Secco, Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG 2008 750ML ($89.95) $79 special, 36 bottles available
Distributor note “When the Rosenthal team visited Bea in March of this year, they were treated to the best tasting of any visits to the estate up to this point. Giampiero Bea had lined up for them all 14 of the red wines he produced in 2008, 2009 and 2010 (as well as some of his whites), he tasted them through the wines, and then they spent probably another hour afterwards going back and forth, re-tasting, discussing the wines, and making additional notes.

I am quite confident in saying the Pagliaro is the clear standout of Bea’s four 2008s (his other three 08s, San Valentino, Rosso de Veo and Pipparello, have already come and gone). The Importer’s hand-scrawled tasting note included “The best 08. More stable, fresher. Spicy. Finer. Impressive. Quite nice. Savory.”

Willi Haag

The Haag estate has remained in the same family for four centuries; the original winery, built in the 15th century, still stands on the property. Most of their terroirs are gray slate sites within Brauneberger-Juffer and Juffer-Sonnenuhr.

J Christoffel Jr

The Christoffel family hold five acres across the Saar, split mostly between four vineyards: Ürziger Würzgarten, Erdener Prälat, Erdener Treppchen, and Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Karl Josef Christoffel oversees the estate, which boasts a large library of back vintages and aged wines. Wines are fermented from native yeasts in traditional 1000 liter barrels. Each of their vineyards are distinguished by differing soils and microclimates and, as a result, unique wines.

Erdener Treppchen slops southward, allowing long stretches of exposure. The soil comprises of deep layers of iron-infused slate, steeply terraced from the river’s banks up to the rough and rocky summit of nearby hills. The vineyard’s terrain inspired the name, based off of ‘treppe’, or ‘staircase’, in German.

The nearby Erderner Prälat occupies a mere 2.2 hectares. Entirely south-facing, the vineyard is surrounded by cliffs which insulate the vines – as a result, Prälat is one of the warmest plots in the region. Over time, it has also become one of the most sought-after vineyards. Given the limited space, only a few winemakers have access to the vineyard.

The Ürziger Würzgarten, or ‘spice garden’ is an intensely steep, iron-rich red slate vineyard. Though it’s located right next to the Erdener vineyards, the Ürziger wines are vastly different: the volcanic soils and favorable drainage lead to an earthy, spice-laden, tropical fruit-tinged wine.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr is also step and quite rocky; the soil is mostly blue slate which imbues high doses of minerality in the high-acid, bright wines the vineyard is known for.

Wine Advocate 89 points “Bottled just before harvest, the 2012 Bourgogne Blanc has a very refined, nicely poised bouquet with lemon peel and dried apricot scents. The palate is rounded on the entry with a delicate touch of shaved ginger and it builds nicely in the mouth as if it were a decent village cru. This is punches above its weight. Drink now-2016.” WA

Gerard Boulay Sancerre Chavignol 2012 375ML ($17.95) $14 special, 16 half-bottles available
John Gilman 91 points “Geìrard Boulay is clearly one of the finest vignerons in all of Sancerre these days, and I have the feeling that his also hailing from the village of Chavignol, which is already home to the Cotat cousins and the Vatan estate tends to steal a bit of his thunder. But, year in and year out, his lineup of stellar Sancerre bottlings are amongst the highlights of all the wines I taste for this annual report. His 2012 ‘regular’ bottling is excellent, offering up a pure and complex bouquet of gooseberry, tart orange, a bit of white pepper, a nice base of crystalline minerality, gentle notes of petrol and a very understated grassiness. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely structured, with a fine core of fruit, superb soil signature, a youthful personality and excellent cut and grip on the long, complex and classy finish. This is a superb young bottle of Sancerre. 2013- 2019.”

Ian D’Agata–Vinous 91 points “Bright red. Flinty red cherry and smoky underbrush on the refined nose. Classically dry and firm, this midweight Chianti delivers plenty of pure sangiovese flavor (licorice, flint, red cherry) and seems slightly more accessible to me than past versions of this wine, which usually started out life tough as nails but evolved beautifully and showed rare ageworthiness. Chianti Classico does not get any better or any more traditional than this.” ID
