Opus One Proprietary Red Napa Valley 2014 750ML ($349.95) Displayed price: $319 – Your Price $289
James Suckling 97 points “Mesmerizing aromas of flowers, bark, currants and blackberries. So perfumed. You just want to smell it. Exquisite tension and finesse with an almost Burgundian texture, yet it’s Napa in its soul with ripe fruit, stones, spices and Chinese tea leaf flavors. Savory and delicious. Drinkable but better in 2020.”
Antonio Galloni 95+ points “The 2014 Opus One has turned out to be a gorgeous wine. Savory, tightly wound and intensely aromatic, the 2014 is going to need time to unwind, but it looks like it will develop along the more classic vintages here. The tannins are firm but also impeccably balanced. A sleeper wine for the year, the 2014 is shaping up to be a gorgeous wine that will handsomely repay several decades of cellaring. The 2014 is not an obvious Opus One, like the 2010, 2012 or 2013, but over time, I will not be surprised if it challenges or even surpasses some of those vintages. In short, the 2014 is a wine of tension, power and grace.”

The average price nationally is $301

New Weekend – New Arrivals

Oregon

Cristom Marjorie Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2015 750ML ($79.95) $69 special
Wine Advocate 94 points “Pale to medium ruby-purple, the 2015 Pinot Noir Marjorie Vineyard leaps from the glass with notes of cherry cordial, violets, rose hip tea and chocolate box plus wafts of forest floor and black pepper. Medium-bodied, the palate is tautly structured with firm, grippy tannins and a great backbone of lively acidity, finishing with lingering earthy notes.”

Reynvaan Family Vineyards ‘The Contender’ Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2015 750ML ($99.95) $79 special
Washington Wine Blog 94 points “Reynvaan’s ‘The Contender’ was initially a project blending in Marsanne. When Matt Reynvann was talking to Christophe Baron, they both decided that Marsanne would be a good approach to co-ferment with Syrah. These great minds have crafted another stunner. Standing at only 13.4% alcohol, this wine has 4% Marsanne blended in. This wine has lovely savory aromatics of bacon fat, cigar box, black olive tapenade and blood orange. There is a lovely salinity to this wine. Bacon fat, cigar box, smoked brisket, and blood orange flavors impress. This has fantastic weight and an oily texture, as this wine finishes very long. Drink 2017-2027”

Reynvaan Family Vineyards ‘Foothills in the Sun’ Reserve Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2015 750ML ($79.95) $69 special
Washington Wine Blog 95 points “This stunning wine weighs in at 14.2% alcohol and was aged in 30% French oak prior to bottling. The wine has a deep core, showing off bulls blood, Mandarin orange rind, Asian spices, black olive and black cherry preserves. The texture is absolutely stunning, as the wine glides along the mid-palate. Black tea, black blood orange, olive tapenade, cigar box, black cherry pie as well as wild blackberry pie flavors impress. This has marvelous range and is drinking beautifully at this juncture. This heady and intense Syrah that will pair marvelously with a juicy ribeye steak. Drink 2017-2027”

Reynvaan Family Vineyards In The Hills Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2015 750ML ($79.95) $69 special
Washington Wine Blog 94 points “This gorgeous Syrah weighs in at 14.4% alcohol and has 5% Viognier cofermented in. This has a highly perfumed nose with red cherry, sagebrush, smoked pork shoulder and suggestions of bulls blood with orange rind. The aromatics are downright sexy. This has wonderful minerality considering the heat of the vintage. Umami, black cherry, smoked brisket and suggestions of spice box flavors impress. This has marvelous tension and texture. Drink 2017-2027”

Reynvaan Family Vineyards In The Rocks Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2015 750ML ($99.95) $79 special
Washington Wine Blog 95 points “This compelling wine has 5% Viognier blended in. The wine is sourced from a 22.5 acre vineyard in the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater. The Syrah was aged for 30% new French oak for 18 months prior to bottling. Smoked meats, bulls blood, Satsuma orange, Umami and Chinese black tea as well as black olive tapenade aromatics fill the glass. You have to admire the aromatic range at play. The wine has a wonderful elegance, showcasing Asian spices, black truffle, black tea, bacon fat, ash and blood orange elements. The range here is stunning and the mouthfeel is downright silky. Enjoy this delicious wine over the next decade. Drink 2017-2027”

Elyse Winery Morisoli Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
Wine Advocate 93+ points “Lastly, and probably the flagship wine from Elyse, is their 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Morisoli Vineyard, which hails from Rutherford, just to the west of Highway 29. Backward, youthful and behaving more like a 2013 than a 2012 Napa Cab, the wine exhibits serious concentration and extract, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and beautifully pure blueberry, blackberry and black raspberry fruit. Some floral notes as well as hints of forest floor and earth are also present. With powerful tannins and beautiful extraction, this rich, multi-dimensional wine should drink well for up to two decades.”
Wine Enthusiast 92 points “From a vineyard smack in the middle of the Rutherford Bench, this delights in spicy clove, black plum and blackberry. Buoyant in acidity, the wine lifts its dusty tannins to a softness that tastes velvety. Chocolate and raspberry form an alliance on the lengthy finish.”

Wine Enthusiast 91 points “This is a wine that brings out all the bright fruit of the vintage. It has classic black-currant flavors and crisp acidity. The tannins are a firm supporting act to this wine that will develop well over the medium term.”

Cameron Winery Reserve Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2015 750ML ($39.95) $33 special
Staff note: Suggesting a long life ahead of it, the Reserve opens with aromas of baked cherries, spicy cinnamon and a streak of iron on the nose. The palate is zippy with spice and acidity. Pomegranate juice, red cherries, toast and cinnamon are tightly packed on the palate. A loamy note is layered beneath the red fruits and spice, like brewed black tea leaves. Just lovely.
Winery note: A blend of 5 barrels of Abbey Ridge Pommard clone, two barrels of Arley’s Leap (Abbey Ridge) and two barrels of Clos Electrique estate fruit.

Chateau Puech-Haut Saint-Drezery Prestige Rouge, Languedoc-Roussillon 2013 750ML ($21.95) $18 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Case-12 Chateau Puech-Haut Saint-Drezery Prestige Rouge, Languedoc-Roussillon 2013 750ML ($249.95) $199 special, 8 cases in stock now (that’s only $16.58/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2013 Coteaux du Languedoc Prestige (which was already in bottle at the time of this tasting) is a blend of 55% Grenache and 45% Syrah aged all in concrete tank. Fresh, elegant and thrillingly pure, with first rate aromas of blackberry, fresh plum, licorice and ground herbs, it is decidedly sexy and forward, yet stays perfectly balanced, with juicy acidity and fine tannin on the finish. Easily one of the top estates in the Languedoc (if not southern France), Chateau Puech Haut lies just outside the village of Saint-Drezery and is owned and run by Gerard Bru, with consulting help from Philippe Cambie. They produce a number of cuvees, with their entry level efforts representing superb values, and their top cuvees being able to stand toe to toe with the greatest wines in the world.”

Celler Cecilio Black Slate Gratallops, Priorat DOCa 2015 750ML ($21.95) $18 special
Wine Advocate 90 points “The Black Slate series wines are produced by different producers from different villages of Priorat for US importer Eric Solomon, as is the case of the 2015 Black Slate Gratallops from Celler Cecilio. They want to show the character of the Priorat grapes in the different villages. It’s a blend of Cariñena, Garnacha and Syrah from (guess what?) slate soils that fermented separately with indigenous yeasts and with 20% of the volume being raised in oak barrels for some eight or nine months. I noticed the Syrah here, combined with classical Gratallops sweet Garnacha and a pinch of spices. The palate is medium-bodied, with the fine slate texture, generous, warm and showy, but without excess, with the graphite holding it together. This is a Gratallops Vi de Villa.”

Spanish Value Wine of the Week!

Sierra Cantabria
Founded in 1957, the estate offers value-minded wines that somehow capture the beauty of their origin. The vineyards are tucked between the impressive Sierra Cantabria mountain range (from which the winery takes its name) and the Ebro River. This Crianza is a classic pick for its lush fruit, balancing acidity and hint of oak and smoke. Surprisingly flexible at table, this is sure to please!

Sierra Cantabria Crianza, Rioja DOCa 2012 750ML ($19.95) $14 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 90 points “Saturated ruby. Perfumed aromas of dark berries, cherry-cola, smoky oak and vanilla, lifted by a floral topnote. Smooth, appealingly sweet blackcurrant and cherry flavors show very good depth and energy, with a spicecake note coming up with aeration. The smoke and floral notes carry through on a long, broad finish that features fine-grained tannins and dark fruit character.”

Vigna Paganelli

Brunello For Your Grandchildren
“A phenomenal achievement and a wine that captures not only the spirit of this classic vintage, but the true essence of an age-worthy wine like Brunello” – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

“Magnificent” –Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

“Highly recommended” –Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

Il Poggione is the estate that straddles the line between modernist and traditionalist with grace and ease. It’s an estate that is tough to beat in terms of quality and price.

So what makes the Vigna Paganelli Riserva particularly special? It starts in the vineyard: I Paganelli is the estate’s oldest, planted in 1964 and cherished as the source material for newer plantings. Grapes are hand harvested and strictly selected for only the finest of quality. Then you must consider the vintage: 2010 was praised across the board as a classically styled vintage and one of the best in recent memory. When you add to it that its younger brother from this vintage was Wine Spectator’s #4 Wine of the Year, imagine the potential of this late release Riserva!

Il Poggione Vigna Paganelli, Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2010 750ML ($249.95) $219 special, 6 magnums in stock now
Wine Advocate 98+ points “The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli is a phenomenal achievement and a wine that captures not only the spirit of this classic vintage, but the true essence of an age-worthy wine like Brunello. This single vineyard Riserva is sharp, pristine and immaculate. It starts slow and shy, but then blossoms to beautiful intensity and aromatic brilliance. It delivers a very authentic and genuine read of Sangiovese with wild berry aromas followed by pressed violets, wet earth, tobacco and lightly toasted spice. The bouquet is seamless and very long in persistence. The same holds true for the mouthfeel. The wine delivers a fine and silky texture with a good dose of power and personality at the rear.”
James Suckling 97 points “The aromas to this Brunello riserva are stunning with subtle forest fruits, orange peel and mushrooms. Full body, very fine tannins and a long and persistent finish. The flavors are so complex with earth and dark fruits. Very fine and dusty tannins.”
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli is magnificent. Huge swaths of tannin coat the palate as the 2010 shows off its power, breadth and overall intensity. Plum, black cherry, bittersweet chocolate, smoke, licorice and cloves are some of the many notes that hit the palate. The Riserva is dark, powerful and brooding. It will require at least a handful of years before it becomes approachable. These old vines, planted in 1964, confer weight, power and gravitas, all qualitites that come through loud and clear on the huge, explosive finish.” AG

SuperUco

Exploring Terroir through Malbec

“Their passion and commitment, their spirituality and, for want of a better word, “purity” in terms of doing what they do for the love of it rather than financial reward, brought to mind the Lopez de Heredia sisters in Rioja. If you want cutting edge, meticulously crafted Argentinean wines hot footed from one of the most exciting sub-regions (Gualtallary), then look no further.” – Neal Martin of the Wine Advocate writing about SuperUco

Michelini Bros SuperUco Calcareo ‘Granito de Tupungato’ Malbec, Tupungato 2013 750ML ($49.95) $33 special
James Suckling 96 points “This is so sexy and polished. Full-bodied, yet refined and long. Seamless and ethereal. Drink or hold.”
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2013 Calcáreo Granito de Tupungato starts with lactic notes followed by ripe plum and ripe skin aromas from grapes grown at higher altitude, closer to the sun. It is a bit wild. The palate is tremendously mineral, with a chalky texture and incredible length. The tannins are ultra-fine and the wine is compact, very harmonious. This is the more austere and mineral of the three. Awesome value!”

Michelini Bros SuperUco Calcareo ‘Coluvio de Altamira’ Malbec, San Carlos 2013 750ML ($49.95) $33 special
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2013 Calcáreo Coluvio de Altamira is closed and tight, feeling the most austere and chalk-driven of the three reds I tasted form the Calcáreo line. The grapes are selected from a small part of the vineyard where the calcium carbonate is seen in the surface. It’s a serious, balanced and terribly salty and mineral red with the violets of Malbec intermixed with crushed rocks and even a marine feeling to it. Complex, subtle, elegant… terrific! And very affordable too. 3,000 bottles produced, the content of the amphora.”

Michelini Bros SuperUco Calcareo ‘Rio de los Chacayes’ Malbec, Tunuyan 2013 750ML ($49.95) $29 special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2013 Calcáreo Río de los Chacayes is sourced from the Chacayes zone of Tunuyán on top of Vista Flores towards the mountains. It has a riper, spicier, floral, and aromatic profile with notes of thyme and rosemary. It is the most extroverted of the three, and also feels quite polished. The palate, however, is more serious, with the austerity of the rocks, a very fine thread of subtle acidity and a long, long, long finish with sweeter tannins. It’s a rolling stone covered in chalk and surrounded by thyme. Awesome! 3,000 bottles were produced.”

Arlaux Grande Cuvee Premier Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 92 points “The nose of this wine seduces you straight away with a great balance of autolytic and fruit aromas: toasted hazelnuts, warm apple tart and kaya (coconut and egg) jam. The palate is equally well balanced providing plenty of evolved fruit and toasty / yeasty flavors. Small, fine bubbles, seamless use of dosage and a long nutty finish. This fine if relatively unknown Brut NV takes first place in the derby – a shocker even for me!”
Importer notes: “Arlaux is a small family-run champagne house producing only 5,000 cases a year located in a small village on the Petit Montagne de Reims called Vrigny.  Arlaux has been producing champagne since 1826 but the Arlaux-Marchal family have lived in Vrigny since the 13th century. Antonio Galloni 93 points “Coutier’s 2008 Brut Grand Cru is interesting to taste next to the Grands Vintages. Here the brightness, focus and tension of the 2008 vintage are front and center. Lemon peel, white, flowers, mint and chalky notes infuse this bright, finely sculpted Champagne. The interplay of Ambonnay Pinot with Chardonnay, along with the chiseled style of the year adds up a compelling and absolutely delicious bottle of Champagne. I very much like the sense of energy here.”

Thierry Triolet

Staff Pick Preview:
OK, who is the best buy in Champagne that I want to drink with my holiday dinners? Yes, of course I’m drinking Clouet with my Thanksgiving meal, the myriad folks I’ve recommended it to over the years already know that. But for Christmas parties, I turn to Triolet. Why? Because of its flexibility with food that I’ll be serving from appetizer to dessert. From spicy chips & dip, rich & buttery cheeses, and Swedish meatballs in herby cream sauce to pies and cookies, you really need something that somehow can’t be overpowered and yet isn’t overpowering.

Enter Thierry Triolet’s Champagnes. The grapes are grown in the Cote de Sezanne region of Champagne. The clayey soils and warmer weather help produce grapes that are sought out by the Grande Maisons for their vibrant fruity aromas. In the hands of Thierry and his wife, Frederique, the wines offer the depth and complexity you’d expect from a Grower-Producer who also sells to Krug & BIllecart Salmon.

These are my definition of crowd-pleasing Champagnes: fun, friendly, balanced and highly drinkable. The acidity is never overbearing nor do these need years in your cellar to show well. And I adore the herbal nuances that surround the aromas of fresh picked apples, citrus and flowers.

These offerings are arriving in December, just in time to pop a few bottles into the fridge for your parties, too:

Vibrant, mineral-accented aromas of fresh citrus and orchard fruits, with suave floral and candied ginger notes adding complexity. Fleshy and broad on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, offering juicy green apple and orange zest flavors and a touch of white pepper. Closes silky and smoky, with good clarity and length.”

New Scores for New Dom Perignon Release!

Arriving October 22nd:

“The 2009 Brut was superb quality—unexpectedly vinous in character and more like a grand cru Burgundy (Montrachet or Corton-Charlamagne).” –James Suckling

“a gorgeous, totally seductive Champagne that will drink well right out of the gate” – Antonio Galloni

“This could well be your new favourite tipple” –The Independent

Dom Perignon Brut, Champagne 2009 750ML ($179.95) $159 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 97 points “This is a DP that shows the ripeness of the 2009 vintage yet remains full of energy. Gorgeous aromas of cream, apple, mango, honeysuckle, and chalk follow through to a full body and super fine, tight texture. Dense and agile. Vinous. It’s like a top grand cru white Burgundy. Think Batard-Montrachet. More depth than the 2006. Drink now.”
Decanter 96 points “Unbroken sun through August and early September helped to shape an idyllic harvest, on 12th September. Superb maturity of fruit in flawless health has produced a wine with wafting scents of both fresh and confit of spiced lemon and wild cherry. Despite the heat, the wine has freshness, vitality and length. Still a youngster, this will grow greatly by 2019. A more stylish son of the ’03, and cousin of the slender and charming ’06. Disgorged June 2016.”
Antonio Galloni 94+ points “The 2009 Dom Pérignon is a gorgeous, totally seductive Champagne that will drink well right out of the gate. Medium in body and unusually open-knit at this stage, the 2009 is one of the most accessible young Dom Pérignons I can remember tasting. It is an excellent choice to drink while waiting for the release of the stellar 2008 and some recent vintages that remain very young, including the 2006. Despite the warm, ripe personality of the 2009 Dom Pérignon is quite gracious, but there is plenty of depth underpinning the fruit. With each successive tasting, the 2009 seems to have gained more power and breadth, especially on the finish. Above all else, the 2009 is decidedly restrained for a warm, radiant vintage. It is not as overtly flamboyant as the 2002 nor as phenolically intense as years like 2003 and 2006. Instead, the 2009 is a beautifully balanced Champagne, with all of its elements in the right place. Tasted three times.”

James Suckling 99 points “Intensely scented dried flowers on the nose in the rose to lilac spectrum. Raspberry and blackberry undertones. Rose perfumes. It’s full-bodied, yet everything’s in finesse. Superfine tannins coat your palate and give you incredible length, and it all last for minutes on the palate. Great resonance. Not the power of 2013 but intellect and persistence prevails here. A joy to taste now, but this will improve for decades ahead.”

Forman Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2014 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 95+ points “A weightless, translucent wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon exudes class. Vibrant and finely sculpted, the 2014 possesses striking nuance from start to finish. Scents of lavender, rose petal, mint and sweet spice notes give the 2014 its brightness and sense of energy. Today, the 2014 is a bit compact relative to how it showed from barrel. I expect the wine will put on a bit more weight during its aging. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2014 at least a few years. Even today, though, the 2014 is a very pretty and pure wine.”

Ramey Annum Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2014 750ML ($99.95) $79 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 91-94 points “The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Annum is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Rich, unctuous and powerful, as it was last year, the 2014 is endowed with layers of dark, silky fruit, striking inner sweetness and gorgeous aromatics, all qualities that are typical of the eastern portion of Oakville.”
