Bordeaux

Echo de Lynch Bages Chateau Haut-Bages Averous, Pauillac 2010 750ML ($79.95) $59 special
James Suckling 92 points “A juicy wine with strawberry and blueberry character. It’s full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a fresh finish. Lots of ripe fruit. Excellent second wine of Lynch-Bages. Better in 2015.” JS

Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse, Pauillac 2009 750ML ($89.95) $69 special
James Suckling 93 points “A solid red, with raspberry and currant aromas and flavors. Full body, with solid tannins. Polished texture. Well crafted. Try after 2018.” JS

Chateau Quinault L’Enclos, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2009 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
James Suckling 93 points “A soft and fruity wine, with orange peel and berries and plums. Full body, with super fine tannins and a fruity finish. Refined and very pretty. Structured in the end. Fresh. Succulent. A style away from the over extracted one a few years ago. Try after 2018.” JS
Wine Spectator 92 points “This is very distinctive, with live-wire acidity running through the core of damson plum, linzer torte and blackberry fruit that’s framed by a mouthwatering roasted apple wood note. The long and driven finish has a piercing iron edge and a smoldering tobacco note that adds to the dramatic profile. Best from 2015 through 2025.” WA

Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Reserve de la Comtesse, Pauillac 2005 750ML ($89.95) $69 special
Wine Spectator 89 points “Floral, blackberry and mineral on the nose. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a pretty finish of mineral and fruit. Very reserved and refined for a second wine. Best after 2012” WS

Chateau Sociando-Mallet, Haut-Medoc 2010 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 92 points “(55% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot and 5% cabernet franc): Good bright red-ruby. Pungent, expressive nose offers black raspberry, blueberry, bitter chocolate, leather and flowers. Densely packed, juicy and sweet, with excellent inner-mouth energy to the black raspberry and mineral flavors complicated by sexy smoky oak. Lovely ripeness and vinosity here. Finishes with substantial firm tannins that will support a couple decades of graceful evolution in bottle. Like some past outstanding vintages of Sociando-Mallet, this will make a great ringer in future tastings with classified growers from the northern Medoc.” ST

New Weekend New Arrivals

OREGON
Crowley Pinot Blanc, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($17.95) $14 special

Crowley Four Winds Vineyard Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2011 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Winery note “This is our second release of the Four Winds Chardonnay. This 20-year-old, high-elevation vineyard is ideal for the Chardonnay that we aspire to make: fresh, acid-driven and austere. 2011 harvest was late and cool, and the resulting wine displays bright acidity, low alcohol and full flavor development. The Four Winds selection is 100 percent Wente clone, which for us demonstrates with precision and clarity the essentials of the site. Four Winds is not an overly fruit-driven site, and Wente (vs. Dijon) is not an overly fruit-driven clone, so the match is perfect for creating an expression of pure terroir.”

Crowley La Colina Vineyard Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2010 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
Wine Advocate 90 points “A Crowley 2010 Pinot Noir La Colina – from the eponymous site at 700 foot elevation near the southwestern edge of the Dundee Hills, planted with Pommard and Wadenswil selections – offers tart-edged fresh elderberry accented with nutmeg and blond tobacco on a lean but polished, bright, and downright succulent palate. A sweet, saline mineral suffusion akin to shrimp shell reduction conveys satisfying saliva-inducement to a lingering finish in this deliciously fascinating, in some respects rather white wine-like Pinot Noir that should prove intriguing as well as versatile over at least the next half dozen years.”DS
FRANCE-CHAMPAGNE
Bereche et Fils Les Beaux Regards Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature NV (2011) 750ML ($79.95) $69 special
Antonio Galloni 90 points “Bérêche’s NV (2011) Les Beaux Regards shows lovely energy and class in a mid-weight, slightly restrained style. Today, the Beaux Regards comes across as a bit compact, most likely because of its recent disgorgement. White flowers, pears, mint and green apples are laced into the expressive finish. Disgorged January 2015. Dosage is 3 grams/liter.” AG

Bereche et Fils Vallee de la Marne Rive Gauche Extra Brut NV (2011) 750ML ($79.95) $69 special
Antonio Galloni 89 points “The NV (2011) Rive Gauche is about as good as it gets for 2011 Champagnes. Warm, nutty overtones meld into savory herbs, caramel, smoke, anise and dried apricots. The flavors are already a bit forward, while there is nearly enough depth to cover the vegetal notes that are typical of the vintage. Readers should plan on drinking the 2011 over the next few years. Disgorged December 2014. Dosage is 3 grams/liter.” AG
FRANCE-OTHER
Domaine Demeure-Pinet Jacquere, Vin des Allobroges IGP 2014 750ML ($14.95) $11.90 special
Importer note “Being just outside of the strict limits of the Savoie AOC, the Domaine Demeure-Pinet Jacquere is labelled with the name of the varietal (Jacquere) as well as the IGP, Vin des Allobroges. The term “Allobroges” refers to the Gaulois people who populated the region from the Rhone Valley and eastward into Alps — later known as Savoie — in the centuries before the Roman era. The Jacquere grapes are gently pressed in a pneumatic press and the must is quickly cleared. Fermentation occurs at low temperature in stainless steel tanks. The wine rests on its lees in tank over the winter and is bottled in the early spring.”
ITALY-TUSCANY
Felsina Berardenga Vino Spumante Di Qualita Brut NV 750ML ($27.95) $24 special
James Suckling 93 points “This is an excellent new sparkling wine with lots of dough and apple character, plus hints of lime. Full to medium body, lovely texture and a long, beautiful finish. Made in conjunction with Cesare Ferrari and it shows. 24 months on yeast in bottle. A blend of sangiovese, chardonnay and pinot noir. About 4,000 bottles made. Drink now.” JS

Small red berries, sweet tobacco, mint, spices and orange rind are all laced together in a pretty, delicate Barolo that will offer considerable pleasure upon release. A weightless, super-refined finish rounds things out. There is so much to like here. Readers who want to dip their toes into the wines of Burlotto should start here. There is so much to like. 2008 Produttori del Barbaresco Wines

Antonio Galloni on Produttori del Barbaresco’s 2008 Vintage Wines:
“Produttori del Barbaresco, one of the world’s top cooperatives, has been making terrific wines for five decades. As good as the wines were in the past, my feeling was that at times the full potential of these sites – widely considered among the very best in Barbaresco – wasn’t being fully captured. The Produttori must have thought the same thing. Beginning in 2001, the Produttori began incentivizing their member growers to cultivate higher quality grapes. At the same time, the winery began a gradual process of rotating out their large 100-hectoliter casks and replacing them with smaller 50 and 75-hectoliter casks. The 2008 Riservas are the culmination of all of that work. I have been anxiously waiting to taste the Produttori’s 2008 Riservas since the end of that year’s harvest, when Managing Director Aldo Vacca told me the Riservas would almost certainly be bottled. Two recent tastings of the entire lineup were more than worth the wait. Simply put, these are the very best young Riservas I have ever tasted from the Produttori. The wines will require considerable patience, but they are stacked and packed with tremendous concentration of fruit allied to structure. It is a vintage Piedmont drinkers love to love, where the individual signatures of each terroir are clearly delineated. Best of all, the Riservas remain exceedingly fairly priced considering the quality of what is in the bottle. Congratulations to Aldo Vacca, longtime oenologist Gianni Testa and the entire team at Produttori del Barbaresco for this magnificent collection of 2008 Barbareschi.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Wines Arriving Mid-August

Produttori del Barbaresco, Barbaresco DOCG 2008 750ML ($39.95) $31.50 pre-arrival special
Produttori del Barbaresco, Barbaresco DOCG 2008 1.5L ($99.95) $66 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 91+ points “The Produttori’s 2008 Barbaresco is simply fabulous. A sweet bouquet melds into expressive fruit in a Barbaresco that is exceptionally polished and refined. The 2008 boasts striking sweetness and inner perfume to match its understated, elegant personality. Quite frankly, the 2008 is very hard to resist today, as the tannins are quite polished. Unusually sweet, silky and refined, the 2008 will take the better part of a decade to show the full breadth of its pedigree. At $37, it is one of the very finest values in ageworthy wine from anywhere in the world. This is a magnificent showing from the Produttori and a great introduction to the 2008 harvest at this historic house. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038.”WA

Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($719.95) $649 pre-arrival special (that’s only $54.08/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 95+ points “The Produttori’s 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a reference point wine for the village, even if, in truth, Ovello is a fairly diverse zone with many exposures. Firm, steely tannins support a core of expressive fruit in this vibrant, energetic Barbaresco. The 2008 is going to require considerable patience, but it is striking, even today. Sweet floral notes reappear on the vivid, utterly breathtaking finish, adding lift, precision and vibrancy. This is a stunning wine from the Produttori. The style is built on tension, energy and focus; in other words, all the qualities Ovello is known for. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.” WA

Produttori del Barbaresco Paje, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($59.95) $47 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Paje wraps around the palate with layers of dark fruit, spices and menthol. Today, the Paje is one of the more open of the 2008 Riservas, but there is plenty going on in the glass. Sweet floral and spiced notes add lift on the finish. As good as the Paje is, it also tends to shut down quickly in the glass. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.” WA

2008 Produttori del Barbaresco Wines Available Here Now

Produttori del Barbaresco Asili, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($99.95) $79 special, 4 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 96 points “One of the absolute highlights in this portfolio of utterly amazing wines, the 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Asili possesses marvelous depth and richness, but also little of the early approachability and sexiness of Asili. With time in the glass, the wine’s inner perfume gradually emerges, but ultimately this is a Barbaresco to bury in the deepest corner of the cellar. Once again, the Produttori have done a fabulous job with the Asili. The 2008 has nerves of steel and a huge, never-ending finish. It is by far the most imposing and structured Asili I have ever tasted from the Produttori. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.” AG

Produttori del Barbaresco Montefico, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 36+ bottles available
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico hits the palate with a blast of fruit intermingled with copious acidity and pure structure. Montefico shares a boundary with Ovello, and shows many of the structural elements typically associated with that side, but with more depth in its fruit, probably because of the southern exposure. The high altitude of these parcels ensures there is plenty of freshness and vibrancy. The Montefico is dazzling, but it will require considerable patience. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2048” AG

Produttori del Barbaresco Montestefano, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 22 bottles available
Produttori del Barbaresco Montestefano, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 1.5L ($139.95) $119 special, 9 magnums available
Antonio Galloni 95+ points “The 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is exquisite and harmonious from start to finish. Among the more structured 2008s, the Montestefano is the wine that most hides its tannin, as the fruit is intensely perfumed, rich and totally seductive. Today the Montestefano provides the illusion of being relatively accessible, but it is virtually certain to shut down in bottle. The 2008 boasts striking aromatics, seemingly endless layers of fruit and power to burn. Readers can think of the Montestefano as a synthesis of Montefico, Ovello and Rabaja. Not bad, to say the least. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.” AG

Produttori del Barbaresco Muncagota, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($59.95) $41.90 special, 16 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is arguably the most open and expressive of the 2008 Riservas. It presents a gorgeous soft core of fruit to match an open personality. Although I wouldn’t suggest opening any of the 2008 Riservas for pleasure anytime soon, readers who want to get an early look at the wines should start with the Muncagota. Sweet rose petals add nuance to the vibrant fruit on the structured finish. This is a great showing from the Muncagota. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038.” WA

Produttori del Barbaresco Pora, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 36+ bottles available
Antonio Galloni 95 points “Playing true to type, the 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is another of the more open wines in this vintage. But that is only in relative terms. Layers of expressive red fruit, crushed flowers and spices flesh out in this radiant Barbaresco. In most vintages the Pora is one of the more accessible of the Riservas when young. The close proximity of the vineyard to the Tanaro River results in a warm microclimate that ripens the fruit earlier than elsewhere. In 2008, though, the Pora packs a serious punch. The coolness of the late harvest comes through in a finish laced with considerable tension and minerality. This is easily one of the very best Poras I have ever tasted from the Produttori. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.” AG

Produttori del Barbaresco Rabaja, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 5 bottles available
Produttori del Barbaresco Rabaja, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 1.5L ($219.95) $199 special, 9 magnums available
Wine Advocate 96+ points “The 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Rabaja is utterly magnificent in this vintage. Usually a powerhouse, the 2008 is incredibly refined to the point it seems to literally hover on the palate. It is a wine of exquisite grace and beauty. All the elements are in place. I could describe the aromas and flavors, but that would be doing this majestic Barbaresco a huge disservice. Ultimately, the 2008 Rabaja, is all about textural finesse and pure elegance. This is another breathtaking wine from the Produttori. A king among kings. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.” WA

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo

New Arrivals

Ghemme is a sub-region of Piedmont’s north-west, in the Colli Novaresi area. The first grape growers in the region were a Celtic tribe called the Agamicans Zuruck. Ghemme was granted DOC status in 1969 and DOCG status in 1997. Today, it is composed of 85 hectares of vineyards along hillsides in the Province of Novara. The climate is continental.

The Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo is owned by the Arlunno family. The family has owned vineyards in the area for several centuries, though only recently formed the winery in 1977. The estate has over 100 hectares of vineyard land on morainic, alluvial hills formed as the Monte Rosa glacier receded. The vineyards are between 250 and 300 meters above sea level facing south, south-east. The soils are rich in minerals from the decaying rocks left by the glacier. The family grows mostly Nebbiolo (known locally as Spanna) but also grows Arneis, Chardonnay and the native varieties of Vespolina, Uva Rara and Greco. Vineyard maintenance is done by hand, and grapes are hand-harvested based on ripeness of each plot.

The wines are aged for a minimum of 20 months in traditional Slavonian oak barrels and small French oak casks and 9 months in bottle. This takes place in the terraced wine cellar cut into the hillsides.

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo Agamium Colline Novaresi, Piedmont 2008 750ML ($21.95) $18 special, 36 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 89 points “The 2008 Agamium is a wonderful introduction to the wines of Cantalupo. Dark red cherry, plum, mint, spice and tobacco notes all jump from the glass in a pretty exuberant wine for the appellation. What a beautiful wine this is. ” AG

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo ‘Cantalupo Anno Primo’ Colline Novaresi, Piedmont 2008 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 12 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 90 points “The 2008 Cantalupo Anno Primo is built on a serious spine of tannin and energy, both of which give it considerable power. Dark red cherry, tobacco, smoke, herbs and leather are all expressed with quite a bit of intensity. The 2008 offers solid balance in a virile style that is probably best enjoyed at the dinner table.” AG

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo Collis Breclemae, Ghemme DOCG 2007 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 12 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 92+ points “The 2007 Ghemme Collis Breclamae shows the deeper, slightly wilder side of Ghemme. Game, smoke, licorice, cedar and tobacco are expressed with elements of burliness and rusticity. There is more than enough depth to fill out the wine’s broad shoulders. Still, what comes through most is the wine’s virile, imposing personality.” AG

Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo Collis Carellae, Ghemme DOCG 2008 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 10 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 96 points “The 2008 Ghemme Collis Carellae is a real stunner. Rose petal, mint, violets, sweet red cherries and licorice are some of the many notes that blossom in a firm, classically built wine that will make lovers of traditionally made Nebbiolos weak at the knees. Vibrant, translucent and deeply expressive, the 2008 is simply magnificent from the very first taste. I imagine the 2008 will reward readers with another 15-20 years of exceptional drinking. What a pleasure it is to taste the 2008 today.” AG

Saint Cosme

“Without a doubt, the leading estate in Gigondas is Louis Barruol’s Chateau Saint-Cosme. Located just outside the village, he releases an assortment of world class Gigondas, as well as a number of value priced, negotiate-styled Cotes du Rhone efforts that always deliver high-quality (these are normally released under his Saint-Cosme label and do not say Chateau Saint-Cosme).” – Jebb Dunnuck in the Wine Advocate

The Saint Cosme estate is located in the heart of Gigondas in the Southern Rhone. The Chateau at the center of estate was built in the 16th century over the remains of a Gallo-Roman era villa and wine cellar. The family retained much of the original stonework, including the winemaking vats carved into the stone cellar that date from the 2nd century. The Chateau is surrounded by 37 acres of old-vine vineyard land. It is no surprise that the vines average an impressive 60 years in age, coming from an estate that was founded in 1490 and saw 14 successive generations of the Barruol family manage it. The estate is in the middle of two geological faults, resulting in a wide variety of soil types. The microclimate is quite cool for the region; grapes are usually harvested later than other estates in the area.

In 1995, Louis Barruol took over from his father, Henri. He expanded the business to include a negociant label for Rhone Valley wines. He takes a very active role in managing the vineyards, personally overseeing pruning, ripening and harvests. He oversaw the expansion of the wine cellar in 2007 into ancient Roman tunnels. Instead of destroying them to make room for a modern cellar, he saw the value in their longevity and ability to maintain the ideal humitidy and temperature for aging wine.

From the family-owned vineyards that line the foothills of the Dentelles-de-Montmirail mountains, Barruol produces several Gigondas wines. These wines are powerful and rich with a striking elegance. The Le Poste vineyard surrounds the estate’s chapel and was replanted by Louis’ father Henri in 1963. It is composed of several parcels of Grenache and one of Clairette. The vineyard was one the first purchased by the family in 1490 along with the estate. The soil is limestone yellow mall with many fossils. The winemaker writes that this vineyard makes the most feminine and elegant wine of the estate. Le Claux and the Hominis Fides vineyards were first recognized in 1902. Le Claux, planted in 1870, was scheduled to be ripped out in 1914 because the vines no longer produced large yields. The War and several deaths in the family prevented its destruction. The soil is yellow limestone clay and gravel. Now Le Claux is celebrated for its old vines that produce tiny, concentrated yields. It produces the most Burgundian character, with finesse and complexity. The Hominis Fides vineyard is composed of the oldest vines in the estate. It is made of sandy limestone soil that the winemaker believes help contribute to the fine tannins in the Grenache. It is their “most deep and enigmatic wine.” Don’t miss their Les Deux Albion bottling, which is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and other varieties from estate vineyards near Gigondas, mostly in the Plan de Dieu and the village of Cairanne.

Wine Advocate 88-90 points “The 2013 Cotes du Rhone Les Deux Albions is 50-60% Syrah and the rest Grenache and other permitted varieties. It exhibits classic Syrah character with its sweet dark fruits, pepper, wood smoke and crushed rock-like minerality. Medium to full-bodied, it bucks the vintage stereotype and has a rounded, supple texture, good concentration and plenty of length. Possibly outstanding, it should have a decade of longevity.” WA
