Cadence Winery Tapteil Vineyard Red, Columbia Valley 2011 750ML ($49.95) $36 special
Wine Advocate 94 points “More ripe, layered and textured, the 2011 Tapteil Vineyard is knockout stuff. Cadence Winery Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Red, Columbia Valley 2011 750ML ($49.95) $36 special
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 93 points “(a blend of 35% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% each petit verdot and Cabernet Franc): Good deep red. Musky aromas of blackberry, redcurrant, mint and nutty oak. Juicy, suave and energetic, offering enticing, bright flavors of blackberry, red cherry and bitter chocolate and a captivating restrained sweetness. This very intense, tightly coiled wine really screams out Ciel du Cheval. Finishes with terrific grip and length. I got an early look at this wine a year ago, and it’s evolving at a snail’s pace.” ST

Cadence Winery Bel Canto Cara Mia Vineyard Red, Columbia Valley 2011 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 94 points “(84% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 8% petit verdot; this and the Camerata were aged in 50% new French oak): Bright ruby-red. Exhilarating floral lift to the aromas of redcurrant and nutty oak; very Cabernet Franc. Perfectly integrated acidity energizes this somewhat muscular yet ultimately very suave wine, with the redcurrant and cherry flavors complicated by flowers, dusty dried herbs and minerals. Great subtle density here. Finishes with outstanding length and lift, harmonious smooth tannins, and a building sweetness to its floral perfume. This remarkably classy cab franc-based wine should evolve gracefully over the next 10 to 15 years.” ST

Cadence Winery Camerata Cara Mia Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Mountain 2011 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2011 Camerata is the Cabernet Sauvignon dominated blend that’s all from the estate Cara Mia Vineyard. Incorporating 7% each of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot and spending 23 months in roughly 50% new French oak, it’s a thrilling 2011 that makes the most of the vintage. Loaded with red and black currants, black cherry, dried spices, toast and graphite, this medium to full-bodied effort has a stacked mid-palate, masses of ripe tannin, and a savory, chewy finish. It will be better in another couple of years and be long lived.” WA

Lanson Brut Black Label NV 750ML ($49.95) $33 special
Case-12 Lanson Brut Black Label NV 750ML ($479.95) $359 special (that’s only $29.92/bottle!)
John Gilman 91+ points “The current release of Lanson’s Black Label is a lovely bottle of non-vintage Brut has now been in the market for a year and is really starting to blossom beautifully. I last tasted this bottling about a year ago, where it was still pretty tightly-knit, but an additional year of bottle age has allowed this wine to really start to sing, as it offers up a deep and very classy bouquet of apple, lovely and complex minerality, a touch of tangerine, brioche, white flowers and a topnote of lemon zest. On the palate the wine is pure, focused and full-bodied, with a lovey core, frothy mousse, crisp, well-integrated acids and excellent length and grip on the perfectly balanced and dancing finish. As is always the case with Lanson, time has worked its magic here and the wine has really opened up on both the nose and palate and it is quite clear that I underrated this a bit last year. 2014-2030. (Sep/Oct 2014)” JG

Lanson Rose Label Brut Rose NV 750ML ($69.95) $44 special
John Gilman 91+ points “The current release of Lanson’s non-vintage Brut (Rose) is really a fine bottle, wafting from the glass in a mélange of tangerine, fraises du bois, wheat toast, excellent minerality and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and complex, with a fine core, excellent balance, elegant mousse and lovely length and grip on the zesty and refined finish. This is drinking very well in its youth, particularly for a non-malolactic wine, and this has to be one of the great sleepers in the market for high class and ageworthy non-vintage Brut Rosé. 2014-2025+. (Sep/Oct 2014)” JG
Wine Spectator 91 points “A steely rosé, backed by racy acidity and well-knit with a chalky undertow and flavors of crushed raspberry and apricot, fresh ginger, biscotti and ground spice. Drink now through 2018.” WS

Wine Advocate 88-90 points “The 2013 Cotes du Rhone Les Deux Albions is 50-60% Syrah and the rest Grenache and other permitted varieties. It exhibits classic Syrah character with its sweet dark fruits, pepper, wood smoke and crushed rock-like minerality. Medium to full-bodied, it bucks the vintage stereotype and has a rounded, supple texture, good concentration and plenty of length. Possibly outstanding, it should have a decade of longevity.” WA

Perrin & Fils Chateau de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel 2007 750ML ($49.95) $39 special

Perrin & Fils Chateau de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel 2010 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 92 points “Deep ruby. Pungent raspberry and cherry aromas, along with Asian spice and floral qualities. Fleshy red fruit and lavender pastille flavors pack a serious punch, with zesty minerality and a hint of allspice. providing brightness. The impressively long, sweet finish echoes the floral element and clings with excellent tenacity.” JR

Elio Perrone Sourgal, Moscato d’Asti DOCG 2014 750ML ($17.95) $14 special
Winery note “[Translated] “Sourgal” is the name of a wine, but first of all of a vineyard, a beautiful plot about two hectares occupying the entire top of a high hill facing west. The particular exposure to the sun and high altitude, allowing a strong temperature between day and night, endow this wine an unmistakable fragrance, powered and supported by a fresh acidity that enhances the fruity aromas, typical of Muscat grapes and that moderates the fullness of the flavor sweet and honeyed. In the glass it is a beautiful yellow-green, with sparkling evanescence that releases intense aromas, with scents of fresh fruit, grapes and peaches. The flavor is sweet, round, challenging, never cloying.”

Avignonesi Rosso di Montepulciano 2013 750ML ($21.95) $18 special

Weingut Karthauserhof Eitelsbacher Karthauserhofberg Schieferkristall Riesling Kabinett Feinherb, Mosel 2012 750ML ($37.95) $29 special
Mosel Fine Wines 91 points “Schieferkristall refers to the Kabinett-styled wines at the Estate (the reference to Kabinett is pushed to the back label). A whiff of wild yeasts gives quickly way to a very attractive and floral bouquet of rose-water, grapefruit and mint. The round and fruity feel from the residual sugar (20 g/l) is nicely balanced by some zesty acidity and a pure and spicy feel in the long finish. This is a deliciously fresh and lively off-dry Riesling made with a small 9.5% of alchohol. 2014-2020”

Time for More Tempier
Re-Arriving Tomorrow

Domaine Tempier Bandol Rose 2014 750ML ($44.95) $39 RE-arrival special
Wine Spectator 92 points “Bright and high-pitched, this features a talc note that gives way to rosemary and white cherry hints, while the finish races along with sea salt and blood orange details. Long, chiseled and pure. A delicious rosé that should unwind further with some cellaring. Drink now through 2016.” WS
Wine Advocate 92 points “Domaine Tempier’s 2014 Bandol Rose continue to show why it’s considered one of the best rosés in the world. Made with a hefty chunky of Mourvedre, it offers beautifully crisp and precise notes of orange blossom, crushed rock, mineral water and white flower that flow seamlessly to a medium-bodied, balanced, lively and fresh style on the palate. While this doesn’t have the heft of sheer fruit of a top Tavel, it has more tension and focus, and I suspect it will put on weight with another 3-4 months in bottle. In short, it’s a beautiful Bandol rosé that delivers everything you could want from a rosé. It has the juiciness and freshness to drink nicely on its own or at the start of a meal, as well as the complexity and depth to handle any number of richer foods.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars and Matello Wines

Matello winery was founded by Marcus Goodfellow back in 2002, starting with a mere 2.9 tons of Pinot Noir sourced from three different vineyards. Matello has now grown (thankfully) to over 3,000 cases a year, and now includes Goodfellow wines, which focuses on single vineyard bottlings from some of the best vineyards in Northern Willamette Valley. After some solid apprenticeships at highly regarded wineries such as Westrey and Evesham Wood, Marcus Goodfellow took all of his combined knowledge and skills over the years, and uses his philosophy to make wines that “tell an honest story.”

Matello, which means “little fool” in Italian was the name chosen because, as Goodfellow explains, “I’ve always had an affinity for jesters and fools, and it seems to be a bit of a totem. Whether it suits the winery or we suit the fool is beyond me, perhaps a bit of both.” Goodfellow is serious about working with strictly dry farmed vineyards, which include Whistling Ridge, Durant vineyard, Winter’s Hill, Deux Vert and Bishop’s Creek. In 2010, he joined the Deep Roots Coalition, an organization of wineries who source fruit from non-irrigated vineyards, in order to preserve the nature of the fruit, allowing each vineyard to organically show their individual characteristics. Other members of the organization include Cameron Winery, Crowley Wines, Beaux Frères, and Belle Pente.

These primarily older and family owned vineyards are cared for in the most meticulous manner, choosing to use practices such as: non-grafting, high density planting, usage of cover crops, and are LIVE (Low Input Viticulture and Enology), Salmon safe, Sustainable, Organic or Biodynamic certified. Goodfellow explains, “That there is a voice to each special place that Pinot Noir is grown and that irrigation is not a part of that voice.”

Goodfellow chooses to be very hands off with his winemaking approach, choosing not to manipulate the wines by heavy amounts of oak and the usage of cultured yeasts. He approaches the wines traditionally, using wild yeasts, whole cluster fermentations, long elevage, and when using oak he uses it minimally and strictly for the purpose of texture, rather than flavor and opulence.

These wines are what reviewers have called ‘insider wine’ and are a secret to most, being a relatively smaller production, and Goodfellow carrying himself in a very self-deprecating manner. Since Matello’s inception in 2002, the winery has earned a position as one of Oregon’s most respected independent producers, and rightly so. These wines are delicate, refined and are truly terroir driven, showing beautiful texture and mineral components, with each one expressing their own personality. A true testament to the individuality of soils and the fruit that is sourced from these small, specific vineyards throughout Northern Willamette Valley. Cheers!

Leonetti Cellar Reserve, Walla Walla Valley 2006 750ML ($199.95) $179 special, 2 bottles available
Wine Advocate 97 points “The flagship 2006 Reserve was raised in new French oak for 22 months. It is made up of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, 11% Malbec, and 2% Merlot. Opaque purple/black in color, it exhibits aromas of rose petal, dried fruits, spice box, incense, black currant, and blackberry. Suave, velvety, elegant and powerful, all it needs is another 6-8 years in the cellar to reveal its full potential.” WA

Leonetti Cellar Reserve, Walla Walla Valley 2010 750ML ($219.95) $189 special, 2 bottles available
Wine Advocate 100 points “Even better than the straight Cabernet Sauvignon, with additional richness and texture, yet without any added weight or heaviness, the perfect 2010 Reserve is comprised of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 9% Malbec that spent 22 months in new and used French oak. Inky purple in color and gorgeously rich and pure, it slowly gives up notions of smoked black currants, espresso, liquid flower, licorice and graphite that flow to a full-bodied, concentrated, plush and seamless 2010 that is perfectly balanced, has no hard edges and an incredible finish. It’s a monumental bottle of wine that will drink well at an early age, yet age effortlessly for two decades or more. Drink now-2030.” JD

Penfolds Grange 1999 750ML ($399.95) $359 special, 1 bottle available
Wine Spectator 94 points “Not quite as broad and generous as riper vintages, but tremendously classy, offering smoky, earthy blackberry, plum and currant fruit that compete effectively against cedary oak on the long finish. The flavors gain with each sip, fanning out impressively. It’s tight now, but it could age beautifully. Best after 2009.” WS

Fonseca Guimaerens Vintage Port 1995 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 1 bottle available
Wine Spectator 92 points “A gorgeous young thing–even better than I remember from barrel. This is an extremely fresh, floral and fruity young Port, full to medium in body and of medium sweetness, with a ripe and plummy aftertaste of good length.” WS

Paul Avril Clos des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2005 750ML ($179.95) $149 special, 2 bottles available
Wine Spectator 98 points “Really tight now, but packed with dark fig, currant, espresso, licorice and chocolate notes. Superfleshy but seriously structured, there’s layer after layer of sweet spice, fruit and minerality pumping through the finish, with lots of latent depth and power. Far more backward than the 2003 or 2004 on release, but since this red typically puts on weight as it ages, it should be a monster–à la the 1990–when it reaches its peak. Best from 2009 through 2030.” WS

Perrin & Fils Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2006 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 1 bottle available
Wine Spectator 95 points “Powerful, with a round, almost creamy core of blackberry and raspberry fruit all layered with cocoa, sweet toast, mesquite and fig paste. Long and rich through the finish. Still quite primal, with lots in reserve. Best from 2010 through 2030.” WS

Perrin & Fils Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2007 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 2 bottles available
Robert Parker 96 points “Beaucastel’s 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape has turned out even better out of bottle than I predicted. An inky/ruby/purple color is followed by a glorious nose of blue and black fruits, truffles, pen ink, licorice, and meat juices as well as glorious levels of acidity and sweet tannin, buttressing the fruit’s fabulous freshness and vibrancy. This full-bodied effort still displays considerable tannin, no doubt because of the relatively high Mourvedre content. It should resolve its tannins in 2-4 years, and last for 25 or more.” RP

Perrin & Fils Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2010 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 3 bottles available
Wine Spectator 96 points –#8 Top 100 2013–“Dark, dense and very closed now, this has a tremendous core of crushed plum, linzer torte and blackberry confiture waiting in reserve. Ample singed cedar and mesquite, warm paving stone and black tea notes lurk in the background and glide through the finish. Features serious grip, but wonderful integration. Should cruise in the cellar. Best from 2016 through 2035.” WS
Robert Parker 95 points “Interestingly enough, even though many of the 2010 Perrin et Fils selections from the southern Rhone were scheduled to be bottled right after my visit, the 2010 Beaucastel had already been put in bottle. This is a gorgeous wine, a classic blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise and the balance the other permitted varietals in the appellation. Deep purple, with loads of bouquet garni, beef blood, blackberry, kirsch, smoke and truffle, this wine is full-bodied, rich and showing even better than it did last year. I still think it needs 3-5 years of cellaring, and it should last for 25-30 years, as most of the top vintages of Beaucastel do.” RP

Vignobles Brunier Domaine Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Crau 2007 750ML ($89.95) $79 special, 3 bottles available
Robert Parker 96+ points “The 2007 Vieux Telegraphe may be the greatest wine made at this property since the 2005 and 1998. Dense ruby/purple-tinged with an exquisite nose of salty sea breezes, licorice, ground pepper, jammy black cherries, black currants, figs, and plums, this is a full-bodied, rich, Provencal-styled offering with lots of sweet, ripe tannin. It is surprisingly accessible for a Vieux Telegraphe (this wine normally shuts down several years after bottling), but it should have great longevity (25+ years) given its power, full-bodied mouthfeel, and enormous length and richness. This is a brilliant effort from brothers Frederic and Daniel Brunier.” RP

Clos Saint-Jean Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2007 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 1 bottle available
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is blockbuster stuff that has overflowing kirsch, blackberry, incense, lavender and Asian spices flowing to a sexy, full-bodied, multidimensional wine that has impeccable balance and knockout length. While I’ve a slight preference for the 2010, the 2007 has fabulous mid-palate density and an incredibly polished mouthfeel that’s hard to resist. It too is drinking well now, but will have 15 to 20 years of overall longevity when all is said and done.” WA

Clos Saint-Jean Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2010 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 1 bottle available
Robert Parker 95 points “The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is apparently only available in the United States. A blend of 85% tank-aged Grenache and the rest Mourvedre and Syrah, this massive, sexy Chateauneuf offers tremendous notes of balsam wood, tobacco leaf, kirsch liqueur, bouquet garni and a beef blood-like component. Rich and full-bodied with sweet tannin, and huge fruit, glycerin and density, this wine will also benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and keep for 20-25 years. “RP

Domaine Charvin Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2007 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 1 bottle available
Robert Parker 97 points “I believe the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape is the finest wine ever made at Charvin. Their wines never achieve a lot of color, but this is one of the most saturated ones they have produced. The blend from the 45- to 50-year-old vines is 85% Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah, Mourvedre, and Vaccarese, all aged in cement tanks prior to being bottled unfiltered. A terrific nose of kirsch, lavender, licorice, forest floor, and spice box soars from the glass of this full-bodied effort. With fabulous density, a multidimensional mouthfeel, and a 45+-second finish this brilliant, elegant, feminine-styled wine is loaded with concentration and intensity. Like many 2007 Chateauneuf du Papes, the extraordinary fruit level makes it hard to resist. However, it will be even better in 3-5 years, and should last for 15-20.” RP

Made in a good structural style with plenty of barrique in the background as well as lots of blackcurrant, licorice, new saddle leather and spice characteristics, this tastes like a Cabernet Sauvignon made by someone of Italian origin. I say that because of its tannic structure and spice. This serious, full-bodied, concentrated 2012 will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and should drink well for two decades.” RP

Tensley Colson Canyon Vineyard Syrah, Santa Barbara County 2013 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 22 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94-97 points “The largest-scaled Colson Canyon to date, the 2013 Syrah Colson Canyon is classic cassis, black raspberry, graphite and toasty notes to go with a full-bodied, concentrated and layered profile on the palate. This got a big “Wow” in the notes, and while it doesn’t pull any punches with regards to fruit or texture, it stays lively and elegant. It will have 10-15 years of longevity” WA

Producer notes “A dry and fruity wine, easy to drink. Its colour is pale gold with greenish hues. Very fresh aromas reminiscent of citrus (lemon or grapefruit); small pleasant touches of fern or coriander are found as well. On the palate, dry and fruity, with mineral notes. Pleasant and long aftertaste.”

Montepeloso A Quo Toscana IGT 2011 750ML ($24.95) $18 special, 24 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 90 points “Once again, Montepeloso’s entry-level A Quo is fabulous. I expected to find a rich, powerful wine given the year, instead the 2011 A Quo is fresh, vibrant and beautifully delineated. Hints of raspberry jam, rose petals and sweet spices literally jump from the glass. The 2011 is best enjoyed over the next few years, while the fruit remains vibrant. This is a terrific showing from proprietor Fabio Chiarellotto.” AG

Franco Pacenti Canalicchio Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2010 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “Violet, rose, pressed powder, perfumed berry and forest floor are some of the aromas offered by this stunning wine. The palate is still tightly wound, but delivers juicy black cherry, white pepper and licorice alongside youthfully assertive but fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. Drink 2018–2030.” WE
Wine Advocate 93+ points ” Initially subdued, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino reveals itself very slowly thanks to budding aromas of rose, cherry, licorice, tar and menthol herb. The Canalicchio vineyard sites (Sopra and Sotto) show fantastic results in this classic vintage. This wine opts for a less aggressive interpretation of the vintage with soft fruit, polished tannins and mild intensity. It is Brunello at 70% horsepower. That slower approach gives you more time to appreciate the delicate tones of brimstone and balsam herb that carefully rise from the bouquet. It would be interesting to see where this wine goes five years from now. My guess it that it will grow in intensity.” ML

Wine Advocate 93 points “Very clear, discreet and refined on the nose – where the 2013 Eitelsbacher Karthauserhofberg Riesling GG displays fine stone and fruit aromas of lemons and green apples. Lean and vital but also intense, rich and juicy on the palate, this is a lovely pure, straightforward, piquant and very salty expression of the Karthäuserhofberg terroir and the 2013 vintage. This long-distance runner has more fruit intensity than the Edition and reveals a very fine raciness and a complex finish with lingering lemon aromas.” WA

Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points “Nisia Old Vines Rueda Light yellow-gold. Musky, mineral-laced orchard and citrus fruit aromas are complicated by hints of jasmine, green tea and quinine. Sappy and precise on the palate, offering bitter pear skin and Meyer lemon flavors that put on weight with air. Closes fleshy and long, with supple pear and melon qualities and very good clarity.” JR

For the money, this really delivers, a point not missed by the numerous restaurants that are pouring this fruit bomb by the glass. ” ST

Stephen Tanzer 91 points “Vivid purple. Ripe boysenberry and blueberry aromas and an undercurrent of mocha on the nose, with candied licorice and vanilla qualities coming up with air. Lush, weighty and round, showing good thrust to its dark berry liqueur and cocoa flavors. Finishes creamy, round and long, with soft tannins and building notes of plum and dark chocolate.”
