Kapcsandy Family Winery

Highly Acclaimed 2013s

Newly Arrived & Very Limited

Lou Kapcsandy is a classic self-made success story; involving a focused vision, perseverance and a lifelong passion for wine. After fleeing his homeland days after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, Kapcscandy came to America and eventually settled in the San Francisco Bay Area. A former Hungarian National Soccer team player, he was drafted to the U.S Army knowing only a few English words, and played a bit of professional football with the AFL San Diego Chargers before beginning his working career in chemical engineering. And now, along with his wife Roberta, Lou is proprietor to a profoundly acclaimed Napa vineyard and winery.

Lou’s vision is rooted in his visit to Bordeaux at the centuries-old estate Leoville Las Cases in St. Julien. From that moment, he and Roberta set off to be vineyard owners themselves, and in 2000 purchased the former Beringer Estate State Lane vineyard property. In 2002, the entire vineyard was replanted to 5 blocks of Merlot, 7 blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1 block each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, utilizing specific rootstocks and varietal clones to optimize the terroir. The vineyard is now 16-acres, planted with 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

In Lou’s own words, “We are trying to resurrect the nobility of the Merlot grape. We conducted comprehensive investigations of soils profile, physical properties, soils chemistry, geological formation and drainage. To our amazement and pleasure, we discovered a unique vineyard with multiple micro-geological conditions.” Denis Malbec , former winemaker of the famous Chateau Latour works as the consulting winemaker, helping Kapcscandy make modern Cabernets with an old world finesse, leading the charge towards producing legendary wines with lower alcohols and a nod to the wines of decades past.

This is a great opportunity to experience a more Old World approach to Napa Valley fruit from a small, family owned and operated winery, produced from 100% estate fruit. These wines are full of harmony and balance, unlike the all too often excessively extracted Cabernet based wines coming from this part of California. An honorable example of passion and care both in the vineyard and cellar, the quality of these wines are a testimony to Lou’s constant and consistent dedication.

Kapcsandy Family Winery State Lane Vineyard Grand-Vin Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($599.95) $499 special, 3 bottles available
Antonio Galloni–Vinous 99 points “The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin opens with the most captivating, exquisite aromatics imaginable. A wine of arresting allure and total sensuality, the 2013 simply has it all. Today, the 2013 is a mere infant, but its personality, pedigree and overall class simply can’t be denied. An exotic mélange of lavender, violet, sage, mint and wild flowers are laced into the finish.”

Robert Parker 98+ points “The magnificent 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin State Lane Vineyard (87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot representing 30% or 600 cases of their total production) completely obscures any of the new oak it’s aged in. The wine displays a bluish purple color and offers up a whiff of chocolate, cedar wood, graphite, blackcurrant and blackberry fruit. It’s full-bodied, has great length, still seems to be playing it close to the vest, and compared to the 2012, is not as ostentatious or dramatic. Nevertheless, it’s impressive and well-endowed. Forget it for 4-5 years and drink it over the following three decades.” RP

Kapcsandy Family Winery State Lane Vineyard Estate Cuvee, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($219.95) $199 special, 6 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 96 points “The 2013 Estate Cuvée is dark, powerful and explosive, but also super-refined. Floral and spice notes appear first, followed by a host of balsamic-inflected overtones. Beams of tannin and acidity give the wine much of its energy, but the Estate Cuvée is, above all else, a wine of exquisite purity and finesse. I will not be surprised to see the 2013 show even better in another few years. With time in the glass, the 2013 fleshes out a touch, but the best is yet to come. The blend is 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.” AG

Kapcsandy Family Winery State Lane Vineyard Roberta’s Reserve, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($599.95) $499 special, 3 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 100 points “A magnificent towering wine, the 2013 Roberta’s Reserve is deep, powerful and massively tannic. Far from an easygoing Merlot, the 2013 Roberta’s Reserve is going to require considerable cellaring to fully blossom. Floral, savory and mineral notes are pushed forward, until a rush of blue and black fruits opens up on the mid palate and through to the finish. Lavender, sage, menthol, licorice and inky fruit add the final shades of nuance in an explosive Merlot to put away in the darkest corner of the cellar.” AG

Kapcsandy Family Winery State Lane Vineyard Grand-Vin Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2009 1.5L ($899.95) $599 special, 1 magnum available
Wine Advocate 98 points “The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin opens with the most beguiling bouquet imaginable. Freshly cut flowers, mint, cinnamon and licorice all make an appearance as this vivid, beautifully delineated wine opens up in the glass. A model of total finesse and elegance, the 2009 wraps around the palate with what feels like endless layers of aromas and flavors. This totally seamless, polished Cabernet Sauvignon is virtually impossible to resist today, but it will be even better in another few years. The 2009 is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2039. Kapcsandy’s 2009s have developed beautifully over the last year.” WA

New Arrival Special Feature
Conterno – G. Conterno – The Conterno

Giacomo Conterno Cerretta Barbera d’Alba 2013 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Antonio Galloni 92-94 points “The 2013 Barbera d’Alba Cerretta is fabulous. Dark and explosive on the palate, the 2013 has more than enough depth to stand up to the brilliant, incisive acidity of the year. Pomegranate, raspberry jam, wild flowers and spices flesh out in an impeccable, explosive Barbera endowed with real pedigree. Today, the Cerretta offer a bit better balance than the Francia.” AG

Giacomo Conterno Cascina Francia Barbera d’Alba 2013 750ML ($59.95) $41.90 special
Case-12 Giacomo Conterno Cascina Francia Barbera d’Alba 2013 750ML ($499.95) $449 special (that’s only $37.42/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 91-93 points “Conterno’s 2013 Barbera d’Alba Francia is dark, piercing and intensely mineral. Graphite, smoke, black cherries and crushed rocks open up in a powerful, intense Barbera that is going to need at least a few years in bottle to settle down. The Francia Barbera is usually quite savory and mineral. In 2013, those qualities are pushed forward, with the vibrancy acidity of the vintage front and center. The 2013 will appeal most to readers who enjoy pulsating, tense Barberas. Hints of violet and lavender add the final nuances of complexity.” AG

Giacomo Conterno Cascina Francia, Barolo DOCG 2011 750ML ($219.95) $181.90 special
James Suckling 98 points “Glorious aromas of roses, whole white truffles, earth and raspberry. Dusty. Subtle rosemary and lemon grass too. Full-bodied, tight and structured. Yet it opens and caresses every inch of your palate. So gorgeous now to drink. No Monfortino in this year; so absolutely amazing because it all went in here. Wow. Drink or hold.”
Antonio Galloni 94-96 points “A model of pure sensuality and grace, the 2011 Barolo Francia is utterly captivating today. An exquisite bouquet laced with crushed flowers and spices melds into a core of silky fruit in a deceptively mid-weight, regal Barolo. A host of chalky, mineral and savory notes – all signatures of Francia – underpin the fruit. The 2011 is polished and graceful to the core. In 2011, there is no Monfortino. Roberto Conterno opted to blend in that cask with his Francia casks. For about as long as I have known him, Conterno has been fervent in his belief that Nebbiolo can often overcome rain, even heavy rain, while excess heat and dryness are more challenging. Given that view, it’s hardly a surprise Conterno did not make a Monfortino in 2003, 2007 or 2009. Next to the Francia Barolos in those vintages, the 2011 is quite a bit more lifted in style.”

Giacomo Conterno ‘Cerretta’, Barolo DOCG 2011 750ML ($219.95) $199 special
Antonio Galloni 94-96 points “The 2011 Barolo Cerretta is fabulous. Next to the more floral/savory Francia, the Barolo Cerretta presents greater density and overall volume today, both qualities are very nicely aligned with the style of the year. The flavors are bold and intense, with plenty of dark red cherry, plum, spice, cedar and new leather. Roberto Conterno told me he would need 2-3 years to get Cerretta in shape when we first walked the vineyard together during the days his acquistion was being finalized. Judjing by the most recent vintages here, it looks like he is right on schedule. This is a fabulous vintage for the Cerretta, especially considering the Francia includes fruit that could have gone into a Monfortino bottling!”

Giacomo Conterno Francia Barolo DOCG 2003 750ML ($149.95) $119 special
Case-6 Giacomo Conterno Francia Barolo DOCG 2003 750ML ($799.95) $689 special (that’s only $114.83/bottle!)
Case-12 Giacomo Conterno Francia Barolo DOCG 2003 750ML ($1,549.95) $1,319 special (that’s only $109.92/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2003 Barolo Cascina Francia is soft, silky and very nicely balanced, especially in its tannins, where the wine really stands out next to so many peers. Readers should open the 2003 at least an hour in advance to allow the aromatics to open up. This is a very sexy and open young Barolo from Conterno with very little signs of the challenging growing season.” (6/2014)

Chateau Fosse-Seche

Twin brothers Guillaume and Adrien Pire work together, along with their wives, to make the Chateau Fosse Seche wines. Raised in Madagascar (but of Belgian descent), the brothers make no secret of their love for nature. And they have found a unique sanctuary; their vineyards within the beautiful commune of Saumur lay surrounded by a national bird sanctuary.

The brothers Pire employ excusively biodynamic farming practices, restrict sulfur use, and limit yields to an average of 30hl/ha. Their iron-rich, silex soils have yielded wine production since the early 13th Century; both the Chenin and Cabernet Franc are beautifully layered wines, today we are proud to currently offer:

Chateau de Fosse-Seche Saumur Blanc Arcane 2012 750ML ($39.95) $33 special
case-12 Chateau de Fosse-Seche Saumur Blanc Arcane 2012 750 ($379.95) $333 special (that’s only $27.75/bottle and the lowest listed price in the USA today!)
Wine Advocate 93 points “Yields of the 2012 Saumur Arcane were remarkable low (10-15 hectoliters per hectare), but finally gave a full-bodied, firmly structured wine with a powerful length. Golden yellow in color. Rich, ripe and deep on the nose, very profound and complex, but also superbly pure and stony in its core showing cooked quinces and honey. This is a very mineral, straightforward and stimulating wine of great purity, a serious expression of the unique terroir of Fosse-Sèche. Drink now and until 2030+.” SR

Chateau de Fosse-Seche Saumur Rouge Eolithe 2011 750ML ($27.95) $24 special
Case-12 Chateau de Fosse-Seche Saumur Rouge Eolithe 2011 750ML ($299.95) $249 special (that’s only $20.75/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 91 points “The beautifully balanced 2011 Saumur Eolithe is dressed in a dark cherry robe and offers a very elegant, fresh and harmonious nose of dark fruit flavors ( blueberries!) enriched with spicy aromas of tobacco, cigar box and graphite. Medium-bodied and fresh, but concentrated in its perfectly ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries and black berries and extremely well-balanced due to its silky tannins and the delicate acidity, this highly elegant and refined Cabernet Franc from the monopole of Fosse-Sèche finishes with a good and stimulating grip. Drink now until 2024.” WA

Chateau des Roques Vacqueyras Hameau des Roques, Rhone 2013 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special
Wine Advocate 89 points “A rock solid wine, the 2013 Vacqueyras Hameau des Roques is a custom blend for importer Peter Weygandt of 55% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre and 20% Syrah that comes from the beginning of the plateau, just to the south of the village (this is near the vineyards of Sang de Cailloux). Raised mostly in tank, but with 30% in demi-muid, this fruit-filled, supple, rounded and beautifully drinkable Vacqueyras offers lots of dark fruits, pepper, Bing cherry and violet aromas and flavors. Surprisingly mouth-filling and ripe in the vintage, it has loads of charm and will drink nicely for 4-5 years, possibly longer.”

Case-12 Domaine Alary Cairanne La Font d’Estevenas, Rhone 2012 750Ml ($279.95) $239 special (that’s only $/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 91 points “The 2012 Cairanne le Font d’Estevenas is an outstanding blend of Grenache and Syrah that saw a traditional élevage in tank. Showing plenty of gamy meatiness, spice and sweet berry and raspberry fruit, it’s medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated and has enough underlying structure to drink nicely for another 5-7 years. While I don’t have the price on this latest release, it normally represents a fantastic value.”JD

Daniel Bouland Chiroubles, Beaujolais 2013 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
John Gilman 92+ points “Daniel Bouland is rightly recognized for the outstanding quality of his Morgon bottlings, but his Chiroubles is one of the finest examples produced from this lovely appellation and the 2013 is stellar. The bouquet is a complex and vibrant red fruity mélange of sappy cherries, quince, violets, a touch bonfire, orange peel and a pure and classy signature of soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and tangy, with a sappy core, just a touch of tannin, bright acids and outstanding focus and grip on the very, very long and very transparent finish. This is great juice! 2014-2030.” JG

Daniel Bouland Morgon Delys, Beaujolais 2013 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 92 points “(made from vines planted in 1926): Lurid violet color. Potent dark berry, licorice and espresso aromas are lifted by a sexy floral nuance. Chewy and broad-shouldered, with weighty blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that stretch out slowly with air. Shows very good energy and lift on the long, mineral-tinged finish, which leaves a smoky, minerally note behind. This youthful wine demands patience.” JR

Remoissenet Pere et Fils

A French Renaissance

In 1877, the Remoissenet estate was founded from within a spectacular building in Beaune dating back to the 14th-century. In the ensuing years, they’ve earned a particularly strong base of followers for their white wines.Acclaim for the reds did not always match that of the whites, particularly towards the end of Roland Remoissenet’s 30-year tenure at the estate. Upon being purchased to foreign developers along with Maison Louis Jadot, the house has enjoyed somewhat of a Renaissance.

Bernard Repolt, once the president of Louis Jadot, is new to the helm of Remoissenet. Aside from overseeing production of roughly 200,00 bottles per annum, Msr. Repolt controls the vast and treasured cellars which also changed hands during the estate’s purchase. The cellar is a bit of a time capsule, as its holdings include brilliant bottlings which span many decades.

The estate’s holdings of Beaune 1er Crus are supplemented with negociant purchases and some holdings from the Lanvin family across the Cote de Nuits. The current offerings offer a glance of Remoissenet at an intersection of history, connecting their old reserves and the family’s past with the future of Burgundy-at-large.

Maison Remoissenet Pere & Fils Beaune Greves Premier Cru 2011 750ML ($79.95) $59 special
Antonio Galloni 91 points “The 2011 Beaune Les Grèves is the most powerful and structured of these Beaune 1er Crus from Remoissenet. Graphite, violets, cloves, menthol and licorice are some of the many notes that emerge from the glass. Savory herbs, smoke and wild flowers add complexity and intrigue as the wine continues to open up. Readers will need to give the 2011 at least a few years in bottle, as today the tannins remain imposing.” AG

Antonio Galloni 88 points “Remoissenet’s 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin is a bit more reticent today than it usually is, as structural elements appear to dominate over the fruit. Crushed flowers, sweet tobacco and menthol add complexity on the slightly compact finish.” AG

Maison Remoissenet Pere & Fils Chambolle-Musigny Les Echanges 2011 750ML ($119.95) $89 pre-arrival special

Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2011 Clos de Vougeot is dense, compact and structured. Firm, chalky tannins support a core of bright red berries, mint, wild flowers and minerals. The 2011 possesses gorgeous clarity and focus, with more than enough underlying minerality to drink well for a number if years.” AG

Maison Remoissenet Pere & Fils Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2011 750ML ($279.95) $199 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 93+ points “The 2011 Chapelle-Chambertin is not lacking in personality, that much is obvious. A savory, almost wild Burgundy, the 2011 Chapelle is laced with dried herbs, tobacco, black cherries and cured meats are some of the notes that blossom in the glass. It will be interesting to see where the 2011 goes; will it always remain a bit gamy, or will it find a bit more finesse in bottle?” AG

Maison Remoissenet Pere & Fils Chambertin Clos-de-Beze 2011 750ML ($349.95) $219 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2011 Chambertin Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru is less flamboyant than the Charmes-Chambertin ‘11 tasted alongside. The fruit here is darker, a touch more tertiary but still very well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, a masculine Clos-de-Beze that will need two or three more years in the cellar. Personally, I prefer the harmony and plushness of the Charmes-Chambertin, although this will repay bottle age thanks to its substance and structure. Drink 2018-2030.” WA
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2011 Chambertin Clos de Bèze isn’t ready to show all its cards just yet. This is a relatively delicate style for Bèze, with expressive floral notes that convey more finesse than power. The 2011 isn’t fully formed yet, but today my impression is that it will remain quite restrained in style.” AG

Maison Remoissenet Pere & Fils Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2011 750ML ($279.95) $219 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2011 Ruchottes-Chambertin presents a classical expression of lifted, fragrant fruit to match its weightless personality. Today, the 2011 is incredibly expressive, with impeccable balance and a total sense of harmony that is hugely appealing.” AG

Pour Some Purato

“Sicilian wine is tinged with a sense of discover – native varietals, unique topographies, and flavor profiles unlike anywhere else. A recent discovery from the country, Feudo di Santa Teras ‘Purato,’ is the perfect postcard from the island. Straight out of the gate aromas of crushed berries and wildflowers emerge. On the palate, the wine is playful yet structured. Marionberry, cardamom and an additional splash of spice make for an easy-to-love bottle which has serious versatility. Medium bodied, with good mineral structure and a clean, lasting finish. This might become our ‘house wine’ for the winter!”

The Northern Rhone

Some of the earliest wine making in France can be traced back to the Northern Rhone. Though the wines are often grouped with the Rhone-at-large or pushed aside for Burgundy or Bordeaux, some of the country’s greatest wines also emerge from the sub region. Compared to the Grenache-focused Southern Rhone, the Syrah-centric north is far cooler in temperatures and experiences a more distinctive seasonality.

The rocky soils of the north are ideal for the vines; many vineyards are terraced along the banks of the Rhone River and benefit from “la bise”, which is local nomenclature for the winds which sweep through the valley. Syrah, Viogner, Marsanne and Rousanne are vinified within the sub region. Of eight total AOC’s, the most famous are Cote-Rotie, Cornas, Hermitage, and Saint-Joseph, with the other four being Condrieu, Crozes-Hermitage, St. Peray, and Chateau-Grillet. Let’s dig a little deeper into each of these incredible terroirs:

+ Cote-Rotie
Roughly translating to ‘roasted slope’, this is the northern-most AOC whose steep topography receives a substantial amount of sunlight. Wines made under the appellation’s stipulations must be made from Syrah and no more than 20% Viogner – if a wine is not 100% Syrah here, the Syrah-Viogner must be cofermented. Viogner adds aromatics to the wines here, lending a floral sensibility to the otherwise meaty, often rustic wines. Vines facing south and southeast dominate fruit production here, resulting in aromatic and elegant wines of great distinction.

+ Hermitage
Perhaps thirty miles southward, Hermitage AOC lies along the river Rhone above the town of Tain. Between this town and the neighboring town of Tournon, many of the stars of the Rhone make their finest wines: among them, JL Chave and the historic houses of Delas Freres, Paul Jaboulet, and Chapoutier. Syrah is the star here, of course, and up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussane may be employed as well. Some of the world’s earliest instances of Syrah are traced back to here!

+ Saint-Joseph
As goes with most other AOC’s here, Syrah takes the main stage. Up to 10% of Marsanne/Roussane may be added to the cepage, however. While some say that Saint-Joseph’s offerings are to be drunk while waiting for Hermitage and Côte Rôtie to mature, the appellation offers distinctive and beautiful wines that offer incredible values.

Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points “Light gold. Pungent, mineral-laced aromas of dried pear, fig, honey and fennel, with a hint of jasmine in the background. Fleshy and dry on the palate, offering incisive orchard and pit fruit flavors and a touch of waxiness. Smoothly combines richness and vivacity, finishing with firm mineral bite and strong floral persistence.” JR

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc 2011 1.5L ($549.95) $419 special, 2 magnums available
Wine Spectator 97 points “Still a bit reserved aromatically, with hints of orange blossom and crème anglaise peeking out, this features a captivating display of racy quinine, honeysuckle and white peach flavors inlaid into a rich core of brioche, Cavaillon melon, white truffle, smoked almond and heather honey. Incredibly long. Hard to resist now, but ideal for when your toddler graduates college. Best from 2019 through 2030.” WS
Wine Advocate 96 points “Just bottled, the 2011 Hermitage Blanc also shows the richer side of Hermitage with its full-bodied, voluptuously textured and up-front profile. Honeysuckle, licorice, toast, citrus oil and liquid mineral-like qualities all emerge from this beauty, and it stays beautifully fresh and focused on the palate. A blend of mostly Marsanne, yet with roughly 20% Roussanne, from the l’Ermite, Les Rocoules, Maison Blanche and Peleat lieux-dits, this substantial white should be consumed over the coming 2-4 years, or forgotten for a decade or more. It will have over two decades of longevity.” WA

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc 2012 1.5L ($699.95) $499 special, 1 magnum available
Wine Spectator 97 points “A stunner from the start, with distinct depth to the creamed mango, white peach and heather flavors, this maintains superior precision and definition as the singed almond, chamomile, salted butter and ginger notes fill in. Glazed pear, elderflower honey and beeswax details chime in on the extremely long finish. Enjoyable now, but needs serious cellaring to show its full potential. Best from 2016 through 2037. 500 cases made.” JM
Wine Advocate 96 points “Much more open, fleshy and sexy, the 2012 Hermitage Blanc was just bottled a month prior to this tasting. Coming from l’Ermite, Les Rocoules, Maison Blanche and Peleat lieux-dits, it’s always a rough blend of 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne that’s aged in barrel. Loaded with notions of honeysuckle, orange marmalade, powered rock, buttered citrus and green almond, it’s full-bodied, rich, upfront and fruit loaded. While I think it will be a relatively accessible early in its life, it has the concentration to hold for two decades.” WA
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 94-96 points “Tasted in single-site components from tanks as the wine awaited blending: #1, from Peleat: Ripe pear and honey aromas, with a suave floral accent and a hint of smoky minerals. At once rich and lively, showing excellent back-end power. #2, from Rocoules: Intense, mineral-accented citrus and orchard fruit aromas, with a sexy floral nuance building with air. Bright, focused and mineral-driven, with a strong Meyer lemon quality lingering on the tangy finish. #3, also from Rocoules: Showing more emphasis on orchard fruit than the first Rocoules tank, with powerful quince and pear flavors and a touch of bitter quinine. Dusty minerals sharpen the long, sappy finish. #4, from l’Ermite: Spicy citrus zest and ginger scents along with a chalky mineral note and a hint of anise. Smoky and penetrating, with superb finishing clarity and lingering spiciness. #5, also from l’Ermite: More floral and masculine than the previous l’Ermite, with strong jasmine and orchard fruit character and a touch of bitter quinine. Bright and nervy on the finish, which doesn’t want to let up.” JR

Northern Rhone Red Wines Available Here Now

Domaine Blachon Saint-Joseph Hommage Roger 2012 750ML ($34.95) $29 special, 2 bottles available
Importer note “Forget what’s trending and all that “wow factor” stuff. What you have here is Saint-Joseph from the very kernel of appellation. Pull the cork and pour this wine to let it seduce you. A garnet purple with tones almost black projects from the glass. In the bouquet find aromas of violet and white pepper; while on the palate it is a smooth and supple wine. Distinct minerality and fruits that recall black raspberry and dark plum lead to a finish that stays with you long after your taste. With very few exceptions, you just can’t get Syrah like this from anywhere else.”

Domaine Chambeyron Cote Rotie La Chavarine 2011 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 34 bottles available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 90 points “Bright ruby. High-pitched aromas of red and dark berries, potpourri and woodsmoke pick up a peppery nuance with air. Sappy, sharply focused black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors expand slowly on the back half, with a gentle floral pastille nuance emerging. Soft tannins shape the finish, which lingers with good sweet persistence.” JR

M. Chapoutier Cote Rotie La Mordoree 2010 750ML ($179.95) $119 special, 19 bottles available
Wine Spectator 97 points “Packed, with layers of charcoal and tar covering the well-endowed core of braised fig, blackberry pâte de fruit and pastis-soaked plum for now. Alder, olive and bay line the finish, with a terrific graphite spine lending support. Best from 2019 through 2030.” WS

M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Meal Rouge 2010 750ML ($319.95) $299 special, 1 bottle available
Robert Parker 99 points “From the warmest site of these three vineyards, the 2010 Ermitage Le Meal has sweet creme de cassis, blackberry, bacon fat and a meaty, bloody steak component to its richness. It has good acidity, but is clearly the most voluptuous and succulent of this quartet of monumental wines from one of the greatest appellations for wine in the world, Hermitage. This wine needs a good decade of cellaring and should continue to evolve for 40-50+ years.”WA

M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 2010 750ML ($499.95) $399 special, 2 bottles available
Robert Parker 100 points “Tasting like the concentrated blood from an aged and grilled strip steak, the 2010 Ermitage Le Pavillon boasts a black/purple color along with creme de cassis, camphor, pen ink, white flower and lead pencil shaving characteristics in its massive, full-bodied personality. It almost defies description because of its ethereal concentration and off-the-charts extract levels. This is not for the faint of heart, or those who lack patience, as it will require 10-15 years of bottle age, and, as previously stated, will keep for 50 or more. There are just over 1,000 cases of the 2010 Le Pavillon, another perfect wine in the constellation of profound wines produced by Michel Chapoutier.” RP

Delas Freres Cote Rotie Seigneur de Maugiron 2010 750ML ($89.95) $69 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Spectator 94 points “Packed with lots of dark ganache, tapenade, tobacco, blackberry compote and freshly sliced plum fruit flavors, this really courses along with noticeable energy, while bramble, singed bay leaf and charcoal stud the finish dramatically. Best from 2015 through 2027.” WS
Robert Parker 91 points “The 2010 Cote Rotie Seigneur de Maugiron has fleshed out since last year offering notes of black olives, garrigue, licorice, forest floor, bacon fat, raspberries and black currants. This medium-bodied Cote Rotie veers more toward a Burgundy-styled wine than its Syrah-based peers in the Northern Rhone. Two extraordinary wines are the offerings Jacques Grange has fashioned from the Delas Freres holdings in the Cote Brune, the 2011 and 2010 Cote Rotie La Landonne.” RP

Delas Freres Cote-Rotie La Landonne 2010 750ML ($269.95) $219 special, 2 bottles available
Robert Parker 98+ points “Flirting with perfection, the 2010 Cote Rotie La Landonne offers up scents of black truffles, incense, smoked game, creosote, spring flowers and black fruits. Full-bodied with mouth-staining tannin as well as mouth-saturating extract and richness, this powerful, strikingly intense 2010 is young and unevolved, but it is filled with potential. Interestingly, Jacques Grange told me this cuvee was made from 100% destemmed fruit. Forget this wine for 4-5 years, and drink it over the following three decades.” R

Delas Freres Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes-Marquise de la Tourette 2009 750ML ($149.95) $99 special, 2 bottles available
Delas Freres Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes-Marquise de la Tourette 2009 1.5L ($279.95) $249 special, 6 magnums available
Robert Parker 98 points “The magnificent 2009 Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes boasts a black/purple color as well as a wonderful nose of creosote, incense, charcoal, blackberry jam, acacia flowers, white chocolate and a hint of espresso roast. Full-bodied and unctuously textured with low acidity and magnificent density, this 2009 can be drunk in 5-6 years or cellared for 30-50 years.”RP

Delas Freres Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes-Marquise de la Tourette 2010 750ML ($119.95) $79 special, 19 bottles available
Robert Parker 96 points “One of the finest Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes I have ever tasted is the 2010, which comes close to rivaling their prodigious 2009. A wine of great intensity, it possesses an inky/purple color, plenty of creme de cassis, licorice, lead pencil shavings, camphor, flint and barbecue smoke characteristics, and a thickness and viscosity that eclipse that of the 2009. Full-bodied and powerful with sweet tannins, a striking floral/mineral component in the mid-palate, and a huge, massive finish, this brilliant Hermitage should be consumed between 2018-2035.” RP

Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 2010 1.5L ($699.95) $599 special, 1 magnum available
Robert Parker 100 points “Eclipsing even the 2009, the 2010 Cornas achieved one of the highest natural alcohol levels (14%) ever recorded at Clape. This complex, inky/purple-colored effort boasts abundant notes of charcoal, licorice, blackberries and blueberries intermixed with a hint of scorched earth (or is it charcoal embers?), a full-bodied mouthfeel, a seamless personality and a crushed rock-like minerality. The tannins are so sweet it will be drinkable in 2-3 years, and should keep for 25 or more. It is a tour de force in what Syrah can achieve in this hallowed appellation. Kudos to the Clape family, especially Pierre-Marie.” RP

Paul Jaboulet Aine Domaine de Roure Crozes-Hermitage 2012 750ML ($59.95) $41.90 special, 26 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 points “Coming from a small three-hectare plot of granite soils in the northern part of the appellation (which is the prime terroir), the blockbuster 2012 Crozes Hermitage Domaine Raymond Roure exhibits incredible minerality in its black raspberry, olive tapenade, spring flower, and subtle chocolate-laced aromatics. Tasting like it was filtered through a bed of rocks, it’s full-bodied, thrillingly concentrated and has superb underlying structure. In short, it’s a smoking Crozes Hermitage to drink anytime over the coming 15+ years. Unfortunately, there’s only 500 cases made.” WA

Paul Jaboulet Aine Saint-Joseph Domaine de la Croix des Vignes 2012 750ML ($69.95) $49 special, 29 bottles available
Wine Advocate 95 points “The only Saint Joseph produced, the 2012 St Joseph Domaine de la Croix des Vignes is another incredible effort from this team. Coming from steep, granite soils and a vineyard located just beside the famed Vignes de Hospice, this beauty knocks it out of the park with its massive minerality, currants, rare beef and tapenade-like aromas and flavors. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured and still lively and elegant, it too will knock your socks off over the coming 15-20 years.” WA

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Rouge 2011 1.5L ($649.95) $499 special, 2 magnums available
Wine Advocate 96-98 points “The 2011 Hermitage (also still in barrel), in comparison, is more focused and straight, with a slightly more serious feel to its tannin profile and overall structure. All of the samples (again, tasted in individual components) were beautifully perfumed, with the Les Bessards (which will make up the bulk of the blend) showing surprising density and concentration in a vintage that generally produced more up-front and supple wines. A serious 2011 that will certainly be one of the stars of the vintage, it should be reasonably approachable on release and have an easy two decades of longevity.” WA
Wine Spectator 96 points “A grippy, mouthwatering style, with solid, briary tannins inlaid with finely beaded acidity, all of which meld into the core of anise, blackberry paste and fig sauce flavors. Shows terrific energy on the singed apple wood-filled finish. Should cruise in the cellar. Best from 2016 through 2030.” JM

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 2012 750ML ($319.95) $228 special, 28 bottles available
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 2012 3L ($1,799.95) $1,249 special, 1 jeroboam available
Wine Advocate 94-97 points “Looking at the 2012 Hermitage, which is still resting in barrels and getting ready to be bottled, it’s a much more classic, easy to read Hermitage that has lots of ripe, sweet fruit in its full-bodied, concentrated, textured profile. It has copious sweet blackberry and cassis fruit, violet and serious granite-like minerality, superb mid-palate depth and a focused, structured finish. It’s a beautiful, classy 2012 that will have 20-25+ years of longevity.” WA
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 95-97 points “Presented as components from four different barrels: #1, from Beaume: Exotic scents of candied licorice, dark berries and smoky Indian spices. Fleshy and broad on entry, then tighter in the middle, displaying superb depth to its bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors. #2, from Peleat: Explosive red fruit and potpourri aromas, with a bright mineral overtone. Silky and sweet, offering vibrant raspberry and cherry compote flavors and a touch of bitter chocolate. The red fruit note echoes strongly on the back half. #3, from Meal: Fleshier and rounder than the first two components, offering plush dark berry and violet flavors that coat the palate. Chewy tannins build on the finish and fold smoothly into the wine’s dense fruit. #4, from Bessards: Emphatic mineral and dark berry aromas pick up a sexy floral note and a hint of cola. Sappy, penetrating and sharply focused, displaying an impressive array of red fruit and floral qualities and strong finishing spiciness. Jean-Louis Chave told me he thinks this wine will be “classic Hermitage with an emphasis on fruit, not structure, but not lacking in structure at all–just compared to, say, 2010 and 2005.” JR

Jean-Louis Chave Selection Saint-Joseph Offerus 2010 750ML ($34.95) $27 special, 2 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 91 points “Deep, vivid ruby. High-pitched, mineral-accented aromas of cherry, black raspberry and fresh flowers. Offers an array of red and dark berry flavors that gain flesh and sweetness with air. Packs a serious punch but comes off as energetic, with no excess weight. Closes with resonating spiciness and sneaky, fine-grained tannins that fold smoothly into the sappy fruit. Jean-Louis noted that there is a bigger dose of Chave domain fruit than usual in this year’s version of Offerus. Incidentally, I was also able to retaste the 2010 Cotes-du-Rhone Mon Coeur, which I reviewed last year, and it has gained definition and energy over the last year. As mentioned before, this is a wine that drinks way above its category and is a highly reliable bottling vintage in and vintage out.” ST

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Saint-Joseph 2012 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 29 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2012 Saint Joseph, which was just bottled, showed beautifully, and I continue to see more and more terrific, world-class wines from this appellation. Exhibiting terrific blackberry, ground pepper, crushed rock and underbrush, it’s medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and has an open, sexy style that’s already hard to resist. Drink it over the coming decade.” WA
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 93 points “Bright violet color. Explosive aromas of black and blue fruits, smoky Indian spices and minerals, with a suave floral quality in the background. Fleshy and expansive on the palate, but with excellent clarity and spicy lift to its blackberry and licorice flavors. The dark fruit element recurs on the long, seamless finish, which is framed by supple tannins that fold smoothly into the wine’s lush fruit.”

M. Chapoutier Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne 2007 750ML ($129.95) $79 special, 16 bottles available
Robert Parker 90-93 points “The 2007 Ermitage La Sizeranne displays a similar deep ruby/purple-tinged color in addition to sweet aromas of raspberries, black currants, smoke, gun flint, and spice. This full-bodied, well-made wine reveals outstanding richness, purity, and overall balance. Consume it over the next 15-20 years.” RP

Maison Nicolas Perrin Crozes-Hermitage 2012 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 3 bottles available
Wine Spectator 92 points “This red offers a broad, fleshy feel, delivering flavors of dark plum, cherry and blackberry embedded with notes of fruitcake, black licorice and sweet spices. The toasty frame is well-integrated, and the sanguine-tinged finish offsets the fruit. Drink now through 2015.” WS

Domaine Rene Rostaing Cote-Rotie Cuvee Classique Ampodium 2012 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 19 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92 points “Starting with Rene’s classic Cote Rotie, the 2012 Cote Rotie Ampodium is a mostly destemmed blend from Rene’s 13 different terroirs. It’s aged in a combination of demi-muid and older barrels, with just 5% being new. It’s smoking base cuvee that does everything right, offering up tons of sweet blackberry, wild herbs, pepper, spice and olive aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, beautifully textured and with impressive concentration, all while stay classic and elegant, it’s a no-brainer purchase and will have 15-20 years of longevity.” WA

Domaine Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie – Cote Blonde 2011 750ML ($199.95) $169 special, 1 bottle available
Wine Advocate 95 points “As in 2012, the 2011 Cote Rotie Cote Blonde has the most depth and class. More reserved than the La Landonne currently, it yields notions of raspberry, crushed flowers, licorice and spice to go with a full-bodied, backward and beautifully concentrated profile on the palate. Perfectly balanced, with integrated acidity and ample, fine tannin, it should be at its best from 2017-2032.” WA

Domaine Rene Rostaing Cote-Rotie La Landonne 2011 750ML ($169.95) $139 special, 12 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 points “More substantial, with a meaty, muscular feel, the 2011 Cote Rotie La Landonne exhibits lots of olive tapenade, underbrush, crushed rock and blackberry-styled fruit on the nose. Full-bodied, nicely concentrated (especially for a 2011) and yet voluptuously textured, with moderate, fine tannin, it will round into form relatively early, yet evolve gracefully for 15-20 years.” WA

Domaine Rene Rostaing Cote-Rotie La Landonne 2012 750ML ($159.95) $133 special, 3 bottles available
Wine Advocate 96 points “Getting a big “Wow” in the notes, the 2012 Cote Rotie la Landonne offers additional richness, concentration and depth, with notes of lots of floral and violet notes intermixed with cassis, cruhsed rock and pepper. Full-bodied, concentrated and with building tannin, it needs 4-5 years in the cellar and will keep for 20-25+.” WA

Saint Cosme Cote Rotie 2012 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 7 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 92-94 points “(made from whole-cluster serine grown in the Cote Brune and aged in a 50/50 combination of new and one-year-old barriques): Brilliant ruby. Smoke-accented cassis and cherry-cola on the nose, with suave floral and Indian spice nuances adding an exotic touch. Sweet dark berry preserve and violet pastille flavors show very good depth, with a peppery, spicy quality emerging with air. In an elegant style, finishing smooth, sweet and very long.” ST
Wine Spectator 93 points “Energetic, with white pepper and alder notes framing a core of racy red currant, blackberry and black cherry fruit. Hints of bay and iron line the back end, where everything streamlines together for a lengthy finish. Approachable now, but could expand with cellaring. Best from 2015 through 2025.”

Saint Cosme Saint Joseph 2013 750ML ($37.95) $28 special, 21 bottles available
Wine Advocate 88-90 points “A step up over the Crozes, the 2013 St Joseph is a pretty, elegant and finesse-driven effort that has lots of purple fruits, violets and spring-flower nuances, medium-bodied richness and terrific purity of fruit. It should drink well on release and have 7-8 years of longevity.” WA

Domaine Vincent Paris Cornas Granit 30 2012 750ML ($59.95) $39 special, 7 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92-95 points “Looking first at the 2012s, the Cornas Granit 30 offers a gorgeous bouquet of spring flowers, liquid rock and assorted black and blue fruits in its stylish, perfumed and elegant style. Full-bodied, rich and still youthfully grapy, this pure, balanced and classically styled Cornas will benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for 15-20 years.” WA

Domaine Vincent Paris Cornas Granit 30 2013 750ML ($41.95) $29 special, 9 bottles available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 90-91 points “(raised in used demi-muids): Bright violet color. Fresh red and dark berries and potpourri on the intensely perfumed nose. Silky and broad in the mouth, with sweet black raspberry and floral pastille flavors buffered by zesty acidity and a hint of white pepper. Closes silky, stony and very long, with hints of spicecake and cola.” JR

Domaine Vincent Paris Cornas Granit 60 VV 2012 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 4 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94-97 points “Similarly styled, yet slightly richer and more tannic, the 2012 Cornas Granit 60 has incredible notes of black raspberry, powdered rock, graphite, licorice and liquid violets. Also full-bodied, with superb concentration and depth, as well as a firm tannic spine, this gorgeous effort should be given 4-5 years of bottle age and consumed over the following 10-15 years.” WA

Domaine Vincent Paris Cornas Granit 60 VV 2013 750ML ($59.95) $39 special, 18 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92-94+ points “The 2013 Cornas Granit 60 Vielles Vignes is serious stuff. Inky colored and loaded with cassis, black raspberry, violets and licorice, it has beautiful acidity in its full-bodied, ripe, polished style. It has rock-solid mid-palate concentrated, and terrific length, so give it a handful of years in the cellar and drink bottles through 2025. Like all of Paris’s Cornas releases, it sees only older barrels.” WA
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91-92 points “(raised in a combination of mostly used demi-muids and older barriques): Dark ruby. Smoky, deeply pitched aromas of blackberry, cherry compote, licorice pastille and violet. Fresh and lively on the palate, offering focused dark fruit and violet pastille flavors lifted by a smoky mineral element. Smoothly blends power with energy, with an array of peppery spice and floral qualities lingering on the long, gently tannic finish.” JR

Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Asili, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($699.95) $619 pre-arrival special (that’s only $51.58/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is one of the most refined wines in this range. Here the fruit shows more distinctly red-toned notes, with plenty of Asili creaminess, silkiness and overall texture, not to mention considerable density. There is plenty of Asili sexiness and radiance, but at the same time, there is also more tannin and overall brightness than I expected. Not that those things are bad. Far from it. I imagine the 2011 will reward readers with many years of exceptional drinking. This is one of the most polished wines in the range of 2011 Riservas. Then again, it’s Asili.” AG
VinopolNote: In Asili, the grapes are from calcium-rich limestone vineyard land. The vineyard produces exceptionally rich and age-worthy wines.

Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is another of the highlights in this range from the Produttori. Imagine the precision of Ovello, but with slightly darker fruit and more density and power through the middle. That’s the Montefico. A regal, towering Barbaresco, the Montefico should provide thrilling drinking for the next several decades. A rush of dark cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and tobacco add nuance on the powerful, structured finish.” AG
VinopolNote: The Montefico vineyard produces intensely mineral wines with spicy fruit and exceptional ageing potential from the calcareous limestone.

Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is one of the least expressive of these wines. Inward, powerful and explosive, the 2011 is not in a mood to show much today, that is pretty clear. Still, there is an obvious energy here that is impossible to miss. A firm spine of tannin gives the wine much of its signature power. Dark red cherry, smoke, pomegranate and scorched earth blossom on the dramatic finish. A wine of real density and gravitas, the 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano stands out for its pure, unbridled energy and overall intensity.” AG
VinopolNote: The Montestefano vineyard produces a dark, ripe and rich wine with thick texture.

Antonio Galloni 90 points “Soft, caressing and voluptuous, the 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is the sweetest and most open of these 2011 Riservas. Hard candy, wild flowers, mint and sweet spices meld together in a sensual, inviting Barbaresco that will drink nicely pretty much upon release. The 2011 strikes an attractive middle ground of raciness, texture and structure. As such, it will be one of the best early drinkers in this range. This is a gorgeous Muncagota.” AG
VinopolNote: Muncagota has a South-Eastern exposure and produces elegant and floral wines with lingering tannins.

Antonio Galloni 94+ points “The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello, from one of the coolest zones in Barbaresco, is superb. Here it is the wine’s precision and energy – both hard to come by in 2011 – that really stand out. Pine, mint, chalk, bright red berries, blood orange and white pepper are some of the signatures in a brilliant, finely-cut Barbaresco that captures the best of both the vintage and this site. Don’t miss it!” AG
VinopolNote: Expect the Ovello wines to be full with rich red fruit.

Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Paje, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2011 750ML ($599.95) $519 pre-arrival special (that’s only $43.25/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 95 points “One of the highlights in this range, the 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is also one of the most classic of these 2011 Riservas. Beams of underlying acidity and minerality give the flavors considerable thrust and brightness. Sweet mentholated notes wrap around a core of plush, red-fleshed plum and pomegranate fruit, leading to a brisk, refreshing finish. What is left to say? The 2011 Pajè is absolutely gorgeous. It’s as simple as that. Pajè is one of the cooler micro-climates the Produttori work with, and that was a help in 2011.” AG
VinopolNote: With its South-Western and Western exposure, the Paje vineyard produces complex wines with bright fruit aromas.

Beautifully layered in the glass, the Pora is absolutely exquisite, with plenty of sweet red cherry, plum, mint and spice notes woven throughout. The Pora is typically the most open of the Produttori’s nine Riservas, as it is once again this year. There is so much to like here.” AG

Antonio Galloni 95+ points “The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is quite backward today, with intense, salivating tannins that cut through the fruit. The trademark Rabajà balsamic flavor profile is there, with notable darkness and plenty of structure that add complexity to a core of crystalline fruit. Energetic and powerful, with searing tannin and exceptional balance, the Rabajà is going to require considerable patience. The only question is how much.” AG
VinopolNote: Wines from the Rabaja vineyard are complex with silky tannins and dark fruit aromas.
