New Arrivals from Mosel Superstar
Markus Molitor

There may be no more ambitious winemaker in the world than Markus Molitor. His determination and drive to make the best possible wines has made him a towering figure in the Mosel, with an impressive, modern winery and holdings in almost every important vineyard in the region. This drive also means there are a lot of different bottlings—Molitor believes that every single sub-parcel and selective pick should be vinified to its utmost potential.

Most winemakers would pick a vineyard once or twice and vinify the lots together—it’s easier and the wines are good. Molitor, though, asks what each parcel and pick would be like on its own—treated as if it were a wine of distinction rather than a blending component. This is a lot of extra work and requires time and space that most winemakers would rather not spend, but the result is a dizzying number of bottlings that all strive toward perfection.

The critical praise backs this up— Markus Molitor’s wines are some of the most celebrated in the world. Whether white capsule (dry), green capsule (off-dry), or gold capsule (fruity to nobly sweet), he manages to produce wines that captivate and astound. We’ve just received the first of our 2017s, as well as more from 2018, and they’re unsurprisingly epic. Both vintages were excellent in the Mosel, with 2018 offering more immediate pleasure and 2017 more aging potential.

But as is always the case with Molitor’s wines, you can’t really go wrong with any of the numerous bottlings. So pick your favorite style and discover for yourself why we insist on carrying so many of these brilliant wines.

New Arrivals, in Stock Now:

White Capsule – Dry

Markus Molitor Alte Reben Riesling Trocken, Mosel 2018 750ML ($34.95) $29 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 92 points
“The 2018 Riesling Alte Reben is perfectly ripe and pure on the intense yet elegant and refined, crystalline nose. Round and juicy on the palate, this is a rich and creamy-textured, finely tannic and phenolic Riesling with grip, but this old-vines Riesling cannot disguise its 2018 origin. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.”
Stuart Pigott-jamessuckling 92 points “The lovely sliced-pear, white-peach and blood-orange nose eases you into this well-proportioned dry Mosel. The crisp acidity nicely balances the generous body and the touch of tannins. Good length and some nice herbal notes and complexity at the finish. Drink or hold.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Alte Reben Riesling Trocken, Saar 2018 750ML ($39.95) $29 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 92+ points
“The 2018 Riesling Alte Reben Saar offers a clear, pure and spicy, quite deep and intense bouquet with slatey pastry notes. Round and juicy on the palate, this is a complex, elegant and long yet still slightly astringent Riesling with enormous power and richness. The wine has a positive astringency that is crystalline and phenolic and asks for patience. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Auslese Trocken***, Mosel 2017 750ML ($129.95) $119 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98 points
“The 2017 Riesling Ockfener Bockstein Auslese *** (White Capsule) is bright, deep and elegant on the nose, with perfectly ripe white-fleshed stone fruit and pineapple scents intertwined with very fine toast aromas. Concentrated, intense and juicy on the palate, with lots of flesh and the crystalline precision of broken slate, this is a generous but pure, close-meshed, highly elegant and finessed Auslese with pink grapefruit and raisin flavors on the persistently salty finish. This concentrated and densely textured Bockstein reveals great energy and finesse with filigreed mineral tension and lingering, mouthwatering salinity. The finish is intense and delicate at the same time. A fabulous, not really dry but dry-styled Riesling of great complexity. Tasted several times in March and April 2019.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Auslese Trocken**, Mosel 2017 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 15 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96+ points
“Bottled with moderate 11% alcohol, the 2017 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Auslese ** (White Capsule) is crystalline and super precise on the clear and flinty nose that exhibits crunchy, iron-rich stone and lime zest aromas. It is lean and fresh but dense and intense on the palate, with ripe, round and concentrated Riesling fruit, some sweetness and refined acidity. This is an elegant, highly finessed and stimulating Würzgarten with a lingering, salty-piquant finish. This wine pairs its moderate alcohol level with great complexity and mineral tension. It’s a fabulous yet still very young Würzgarten of extraordinary class and style. Tasted in March and April 2019.”
Note from Mosel Fine Wines “The 2017er Ürziger Würzgarten Auslese ** (White Capsule) comes from the Estate’s parcel in the prime Kranklay sector.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Trocken**, Mosel 2017 750ML ($89.95) $66 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97 points
“From 80- to 120-year-old vines, the intensely citrus-yellow colored 2017 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese ** (White Capsule) offers an absurdly deep, highly intense, complex and concentrated bouquet with lime confit, perfectly ripe white stone fruits and flinty notes of crushed stones and lemon zest. On the palate, this is a dense, rich and powerful yet highly elegant and seamlessly textured Sonnenuhr with very fine tannins and a tightly woven structure that channels the immense power of this dry Riesling. “Physical drinking starts here,” Markus Molitor says with a smile, and indeed, this is a spectacularly strong and concentrated Riesling. Despite its power, density and tension, the 2017 is super elegant and silky and reveals perfectly ripe, interwoven acidity and spicy piquancy. This is a fascinating Riesling with outstanding finesse and a very long, promising finish. This is one of the finest two-starred Auslesen I have tasted from Markus Molitor, and it kisses the three-star level. I can only recommend buying some cases and enjoying this beauty over the next 20 to 30 years. Tasted in March and April 2019.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett Trocken, Mosel 2018 750ML ($34.95) $26 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 90 points
“The 2018 Riesling Graacher Domprobst Kabinett (White Capsule) is deep and flinty on the terroir-driven, dark and smoky nose. Full, round and juicy on the palate, this is a rich yet pure and slatey Domprobst with crunchy grip and fruity intensity. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.”
Decanter 90 points “South-southwest-facing steepness defines the Domprobst, as does some water-holding clay in the Devonian slate. An exquisitely aromatic nose combines ripe Amalfi lemon and Granny Smith with a floral notion of white summer blossom. The nose alone delivers refreshment. The palate bursts with the same fresh, pristine but notably ripe fruit. This is a mellow Kabinett with bright but tame acidity, not typical maybe, but nonetheless compelling. The finish is dry and beautifully stony.”
Mosel Fine Wines 90 points “The 2018er Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett (White Capsule) offers a delicate nose of vineyard peach, tangerine, smoke, almond cream, and spices. The wine is nicely dynamic and fresh on the creamy and juicy palate and leaves a superbly light and elegant feel in the fully dry finish. 2022-2033”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spatlese Trocken, Mosel 2018 750ML ($37.95) $31.90 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Decanter 94 points
“Here, the first notion is not of fruit but of slate. That lovely, reduced, stony precision that could not hail from anywhere else in the world. Bit by bit apple starts shining through and takes over with bright, apple-scented, citrus-edged luminosity. This sits at a most lovely junction of ripeness where fully ripe fruit was captured at just the right moment, so it brings vivid but ripe freshness that strikes a natural, unforced beautiful balance. Texture, concentration and that tangy slateyness combine to make this irresistible. Long citrus finish.”
Stephen Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2018 Riesling Graacher Domprobst Spätlese (White Capsule) offers a concentrated, very intense and flinty bouquet. Crystalline and round on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense and juicy, intense yet not really dry Spätlese with elegance and a nervy mineral acidity. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Green Capsule – Off-Dry

Markus Molitor Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spatlese Feinherb, Mosel 2018 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94+ points
“The 2018 Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Spätlese (Green Capsule) is very clear and intensely aromatic on the pure, elegant, flinty and only initially slightly reductive nose that displays very fine stone fruit and delicate slate aromas. Pure, round and piquant on the palate, this is a crystalline and nervy yet perfectly juicy, intense and elegant Badstube Spätlese with a persistently long and salty-piquant finish. The 2018 has stimulating grip and will age terrifically well over 30+ years. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.”
Mosel Fine Wines 93 points “The 2018er Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spätlese (Green Capsule) offers a gorgeous nose made grapefruit zest, melon, herbs, and fine spices. The wine develops a great zesty side underpinned by a touch of saffron on the palate, and leaves a nicely sharp and focused feel in the engaging and almost dry-tasting finish. The after-taste is long and nicely refined. This is a hugely engaging as well as complex expression of off-dry Riesling. 2023-2033”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese Feinherb, Mosel 2018 750ML ($44.95) $33 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-jamessuckling 95 points
“The stunning aromas of cassis, fresh garden herbs and Amalfi lemons make this a very expressive, mid-weight wine that’s barely off-dry and extremely food-friendly. Great interplay of tannins, minerals and live-wire acidity at the very long finish. Drink or hold.”
Stephen Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2018 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese (Green Capsule) is crystalline on the coolish, pure and refreshing nose with its white fruit and crunchy slate aromas. Crystalline and piquant on the palate, this is an intense and round yet finessed and elegant Himmelreich with perfectly ripe and juicy fruit, delicate slate grip and tension on the finish. This is a classic with juicy-refined Riesling fruit. Bottled with AP number 13 19. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Gold Capsule – Sweet

Markus Molitor Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Auslese***, Mosel 2017 375ML ($69.95) $59 special, 21 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98 points
“Molitor’s 2017 Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) offers a deep, pure, precise, smoky, highly concentrated yet refined and coolish nose of stewed stone fruits, candied lemons and grapefruits that intermingle with crushed stone and some leathery aromas. Lush and round on the generous but precise and highly finessed palate, this is an almost weightless Auslese with a honey-sweet yet piquant and salty finish. This is another laser-sharp but also sensual highlight of the vintage, not only at Markus Molitor. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

This is the only half-bottle listing in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese***, Mosel 2017 750ML ($139.95) $128 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98+ points
“The 2017 Riesling Erdener Treppchen Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is bright and even floral (hyacinths) on the clear, slatey, highly refined but aromatic nose with its precise stone fruit and delicate flinty aromas. Silky, sweet and round, with great finesse, elegance and seamless, perfectly balanced texture, this is a lean but lush, incredibly fine and filigreed Auslese with a long, fresh, piquant and salty finish. A divine Riesling whose acidity is perfectly intermingled with the fruit and texture. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Erdener Treppchen Riesling Beerenauslese, Mosel 2017 375ML ($99.95) $89 special, 18 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 99 points
“The 2017 Riesling Erdener Treppchen Beerenauslese shows a beautiful nose of white and juicy peaches intermixed with a delicate and crunchy slate aroma. What precision, finesse and purity here! The palate is correspondingly lush, highly refined and endlessly salty, with tickling crystalline acidity. A fabulous, precise and weightless Beerenauslese of great class and style. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”
Mosel Fine Wines 97 points “The 2017er Erdener Treppchen Beerenauslese (Golden Capsule) offers a gorgeous nose of strawberry, coconut cream, almond paste and earthy elements. The wine is comparatively slender on the delicately oily palate but leaves a stunning feel of almond, grapefruit and ripe pear in the precise and pure finish. The whole thing finishes on the powerful side but everything is focused and superbly precise. This is a stunning BA in the making. 2027-2057.”

This is the only half-bottle listing in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Kinheimer Hubertuslay Riesling Auslese***, Mosel 2017 750ML ($179.95) $149 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 99 points
“The 2017 Riesling Kinheimer Hubertuslay Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is clear and concentrated, on the deep and complex nose with stewed peach aromas intertwined with spicy notes of a fleeting kiss of oak and nougat. It has a highly elegant, refined and salty-piquant palate with fine grip and mineral tension. This Hubertuslay is rich, lush and sweet, with remarkable concentration but also weightless finesse and a lean, salty-piquant finish that tickles the palate. Lemon chutney flavors intertwined with the crystalline salinity characterize the long finish of this beauty. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese**, Mosel 2017 750ML ($89.95) $79 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98 points
“The 2017 Riesling Saarburger Rausch Auslese ** (Golden Capsule) is intense and concentrated on the fresh and piquant nose that indicates fine botrytis with lemon confit and pumpernickel notes. Lush and smooth as well as refined and piquant on the palate, this is an incredibly fruity and mouth-filling Auslese with great finesse and a lightweight but intense and aromatic body. The finish is intense but delicate, full of layers and finesse. A gorgeous Auslese from the Rausch in Saarburg. Tasted in April 2019.

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese***, Mosel 2017 750ML ($179.95) $149 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 99 points
“Like the Bockstein, the 2017 Riesling Saarburger Rausch Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is also enormously concentrated on the nose, where fine botrytis aromas intermingle with dried apricots, peaches, notes of quince, lime and lemon chutney and even fig mustard. Concentrated and velvety on the viscous palate, this is a pretty sweet but highly refined and salty-piquant Auslese with an enormously long and concentrated finish. This is a wine to be served in 20 or 30 years, unless you like this bigger but balanced style at this early age. The wine seems to be less racy because the acidity is already integrated and provides structure for the sweet, stewed fruit, but it comes back on the finish and reveals the piquancy and precision of an Eiswein with botrytis. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Auslese***, Mosel 2017 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, 7 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98+ points
“The 2017 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is a very intense and concentrated yet pure and fruity Auslese provided with refreshing crunchy, herbal and iron-rich, clayey slate aromas. This displays perfect botrytis on a bright, pure, fresh and delicate bouquet full of ripe stone and citrus fruits as well as notes of crushed stones. It is fascinatingly fresh and salty-piquant on the palate, with pronounced acidity; this is a sweet but weightless Auslese with acidity that cuts through fruit and slate and tickles the tongue. This is a highly stimulating and crystalline Auslese that is impossible to spit out. Simply amazing! Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese, Mosel 2017 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 14 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2017 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Spätlese (Golden Capsule) is complex and mineral on the densely woven yet fresh and crunchy-herbal nose. It’s a dense, concentrated, piquant and structured Spätlese with lush and ripe fruit whose sweetness is nearly completely absorbed by the Würzgarten raciness and iron-rich terroir character. This is a fabulous Spätlese! Tasted in April 2019.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese***, Mosel 2017 750ML ($149.95) $128 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 99 points
“The 2017 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is subtle and discreet yet concentrated and deep on the delicate nose, with clear (white) peach, spicy lemon chutney and crystalline slate notes. Lush, piquant and silky, with very clear, elegant fruit and great finesse, this is a rich but lean and precise Wehlener Sonnenuhr whose acidity is terribly fine but defined and merciless as a laser beam. This is a gorgeous and already stimulating Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese of great class and style. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese**, Mosel 2017 1.5L ($149.95) $119 special, 4 magnums in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98+ points
“The 2017 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese ** (Golden Capsule) displays a concentrated yet highly refined bouquet of orange, lemon and grapefruit aromas intermixed with delicate and refreshing slate notes. Lush, piquant and salty on the elegant, pure, even weightless palate, this is a crystalline Auslese with great finesse, grip, tension and highly stimulating salinity. This is a finessed, gorgeous beauty, and it almost makes me fear the other Auslesen listed here. 7.5% alcohol. Tasted at the domain two times in April 2019.”

This is the lowest listed magnum price in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese***, Mosel 2017 750ML ($399.95) $299 special, 7 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 100 points
“As always, Molitor’s 2017 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is one of the ripest and most concentrated Auslesen of the vintage. Incredibly clear and intense notes of ripe peaches and mangoes on the nonetheless delicate and fresh nose intertwine with noble slate, fine oak and nougat aromas. The wine is round and elegant on the palate, with stunning vivacious, filigreed acidity that gives it lightness, great finesse, lots of salt and tension and stimulating grip. This is still a baby, but in terms of complexity and finesse, it’s one of the finest wines Markus Molitor has produced in 2017. I cannot remember having tasted a three-starred Auslese from the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr that was so fresh, lean and filigreed. This 2017 Sonnenuhr is precise as a Swiss watch. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese*, Mosel 2018 375ML ($149.95) $119 special, 10 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 100 points
“The 2018 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Beerenauslese * is precise, clear and highly refined on the subtle, aromatic and flinty nose that represents perfect, early botrytis. Sweet and piquant on the crystalline and salty palate, this is a pristine, perfectly round and balanced BA with great finesse and elegance. Absolutely fabulous and complete. If you like it sweet, you can already enjoy this BA, due to its finesse and balance, but I’d cellar it for 15-20 years before I’d even think of drinking it. Sold in 375-milliliter bottles. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.”

“A juicy and rich red with blackberry and black-truffle aromas and flavors. Layered and beautifully toned. Full-bodied, round and juicy. Beautiful wine. Really well done. Drink or hold.”
Wine Advocate 90 points “This vintage is a blend of 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged for 15 months in one-year-old barrels. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Esprit de Pavie (a blend of vines in Côtes do Castillon and young vines from Pavie and Monbousquet) opens with expressive red and black plums notes plus touches of baking spices, vanilla pod, dark chocolate and dried Provence herbs. Medium to full-bodied, the bright fruit fills the mouth with plenty of spicy red and black fruits, supported by chewy tannins and finishing with a refreshing lift.”

Angélique de Monbousquet

Monbousquet’s second wine is a first choice in a great vintage like 2016. But don’t buy just one; you’re going to want a couple bottles of this beauty in 2031.

New Arrival, in Stock Now:

Angélique de Monbousquet, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2016 750ML ($39.95) $30.90 special, 28 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 93 points
“Unique aromas of cherries, ash and grilled meat. Full body with juicy tannins and round texture. Delicious finish. Very soft and approachable. Hard not to drink now. Better in 2024.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2016 Angélique de Monbousquet is deep garnet-purple colored and features bold scents of crushed blackberries, warm plums and raspberry pie with hints of dried herbs, underbrush and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals loads of minerally sparks interspersed with the vibrant red and black fruit layers, finishing pleasantly chewy.”
Jeb Dunnuck 90 points “From the stellar team at Château Pavie, the 2016 Angélique de Monbousquet is a sexy, medium to full-bodied, incredibly delicious Saint-Émilion that boasts a huge nose of blackcurrants, chocolate, tobacco leaf, and graphite. It has outstanding purity, ripe tannins, and is one seriously good mouthful of wine. Drink it over the coming decade.”

Pre-Arrivals ETA June 2021:

James Suckling’s #7 Wine of 2019
Château Larcis Ducasse, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2016 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 99 points
“The aromas here are so spellbinding with shitake mushrooms, wet earth and moss, as well as tree bark and, finally, dark fruit. The palate is incredible as it builds and grows with full body, but always tight and reserved. It shows so much depth and complexity. Please try not to touch this until 2025”.- James Suckling
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points “The 2016 Larcis Ducasse is absolutely gorgeous. Fresh, vibrant and alluring, with tremendous vibrancy, the 2016 has so much to offer. Expressive savory and blood orange notes add brightness to the red cherry and plum fruit, with beams of firm yet well-integrated tannins that give the wine its shape and energy. In 2016, Larcis brings together undeniable raciness and power in a complete package that is irresistibly beautiful. Give it a few years in bottle for the tannins to soften”.
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points “From one of my favorite estates in Bordeaux, the deeply colored 2016 Château Larcis Ducasse is comprised of 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc that was brought up in 50% new French oak. It offers a huge bouquet of black, black fruits, smoked herbs, forest floor, graphite, and underbrush that builds beautifully with time in the glass. Deep, rich, opulent and expansive on the palate, with building tannins, it’s a rich, layered Saint-Émilion as well as another incredible wine from this estate. Give it a few years if you can. It’s capable of keeping for three decades or more.”

Château Pavie Macquin, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2016 750ML ($149.95) $119 pre-arrival special
Jeb Dunnuck 98+ points
“Possibly the finest vintage of this cuvée to date, the 2016 Château Pavie Macquin comes from a cooler, later terroir on the upper plateau and checks in as 82% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 50% new oak. This deep, inky-colored effort boasts a rock star bouquet of blackcurrants, black cherries, white truffle, graphite, and spice. Deep, rich, and powerful on the palate, yet also balanced, elegant, and seamless, with ultra-fine tannins, this seamless beauty needs a decade of cellaring and will keep for 4-5 decades.”
Antonio Galloni 98 points “The 2016 Pavie Macquin is a total stunner. Rich, lush and inviting, the 2016 is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. Sweet red cherry, plum, rose petal, lavender and mint are all given an extra kick of allure by silky tannins that caress the palate from start to finish. There is a level of precision and nuance here that is simply breathtaking. The purity of the fruit is just mind-boggling.”

Cayuse’s Horsepower

Restock Lands Friday

Christophe Baron is not only a great friend of the shop; he also makes some of the most in-demand wines in North America. His Horsepower wines all come from estate vineyards which are farmed biodynamically using, you guessed it, horses. Planted at extremely high density, some are even grown on stakes rather than wires, as a throwback to the original farming techniques of the Rhone. Like the “Hors Catagorie” wine that Christophe makes on his own—no expenses are spared in making these wines and the yields from the dramatic vineyards are extremely low.

The wines are always special, widely considered to be amongst the nation’s best, but the 2017 vintage was a true standout. These are outstanding wines that will be talked about, and enjoyed, for decades.

Arriving Friday, April 16th:

Horsepower Vineyards ‘Sur Echalas Vineyard’ Grenache, Walla Walla Valley 2017 750ML ($199.95) $179 pre-arrival special

Wine Advocate 97 points “Power and elegance. The 2017 Grenache Sur Echalas Vineyard bangs with bright red fruit character with fantastic clarity and a pure sense of underlying terroir at its core. Intoxicating floral aromas of Sakura, crushed rose petals and hints of lavender flood the senses first, followed by layers of wild strawberries, bright cherry skin and crushed raspberries in the glass. It is medium-bodied on the palate, with delicate savory and spice tones that fade in and out between the seductive red fruit and floral notes, giving way to an impeccably balanced structure with energetic acidity and a robust shine and gleam to the fruit. An instant success, the palate is full of flavor and mouth-watering juiciness without being overripe. Immensely pleasureful, the wine delivers an elongated yet compact finish that continues to evolve and unpack in the mouth with persistence. Hands-down, it’s a winner! 301 cases produced.”
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points “Starting with the 2017 Grenache Sur Echalas Vineyard, this beauty is the spitting image of a great vintage of Rayas and offers a complex bouquet of black raspberries, white pepper, spring flowers, and sappy herbs. These all carry to a medium to full-bodied, ethereal Grenache that has a light, graceful texture, silky tannins, and a great finish. It shows the more elegant, almost Pinot Noir-like style of Grenache on the palate and is flawlessly balanced. Just a singular, remarkable wine, drink it any time over the coming 15 years or more.”

Horsepower Vineyards ‘High Contrast Vineyard’ Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2017 750ML ($219.95) $179 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 96 points
“Showing with a deep ruby core that fades to a purple edge, the 2017 Syrah High Contrast Vineyard explodes from the glass with pronounced smoky aromas that waft with delicate notes of dark chocolate-covered blackberries, then show hints of roasted coffee bean, notions of petrichor, baked earth and dried herbs. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is elegantly powerful, showcasing a balanced chassis of youthful tannins that evolve with the complex nature of the wine. There is a velvety firmness to the mid-palate before moving onto an elongated finish that grows in complexity and amplitude as the expression resonates harmoniously, confirming yet another blockbuster Syrah from the ever-so-talented Christophe Baron. Only 386 cases made.”
Wine Enthsuast 96 points “#69 Top 100 Cellar Selections 2020. The aromas explode from the glass, with notes of fire pit, potpourri, black olive, wet stone, dried porcini and stone. The palate is sumptuous, layered, elegant and intensely flavorful, showing abundant savory notes. A lingering black olive and earthy finish caps it off. Best after 2025.”

New Arrivals from France & Italy

France – Burgundy

New Arrivals, in Stock Now:

Henri Boillot Bourgogne Chardonnay, Burgundy 2018 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 34 bottles in stock now
William Kelley, Wine Advocate
“(no review for the 2018 Bourgogne blanc) Guillaume Boillot began his harvest in Volnay on August 27, finishing up two weeks later, around September 10, in the Côte de Nuits. This is once again an exemplary portfolio of wines, all of which come warmly recommended, but there have been a couple of changes that merit notice. In 2018, Boillot told me that he continued his practice of fermenting his red wines in barrel but that he shortened the time of maceration to avoid picking up too much oak-derived sucrosity. And certainly, this year’s collection of red wines shows a more completely integrated framing of new oak than last year’s. Indeed, the reds are so good that it’s appropriate to remember that, until Boillot’s father reoriented the estate toward white wine, this was a domaine best known for its reds. Mention of white wine is the cue to mention another development—that Boillot used a vertical press for all his whites in 2018. He’s very happy with the result, and I agree that these 2018 whites possess impressive chalky structuring extract that sets them apart in a vintage that can be somewhat facile. Boillot added that in 2018 he used a touch less new wood and fewer barrels from François Frères, which—reviewing my notes—does seem to have made for a range of white wines less marked by the toasty, nutty signatures that were once quite prominent at this address.”

Domaine Henri Boillot Les Charmes, Meursault Premier Cru 2018 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, 4 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92 points
“Offering up aromas of buttered citrus fruit, Anjour pear, dried white flowers and fresh pastry, Boillot’s 2018 Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes is medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, with an ample core of exuberant fruit, lively acids and an expansive finish. This is a fleshy, fruit-driven Charmes that will offer a broad drinking window.”

France – Rhône

“This truly rare vintage [2016] is a new benchmark. The growing season was warm during the day but cool at night, with an unusually large diurnal swing that led to slow, even ripening across all varieties while maintaining acidity. Reds are laden with fruit, yet extremely racy and fresh in feel; whites are pure, brimming with energy.” – Wine Spectator

New Arrivals, in Stock Now:

Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve, Rhône 2016 750ML ($59.95) $44 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 95 points
“Full-bodied and velvety, Sabon’s 2016 Châteauneuf du Pape Reserve is a step up from the les Olivets bottling and probably represents the best value in the 2016 lineup. Tasted blind, it showcases ripe dark plum and cola but also super ripe Grenache notes of apricot and delicate hints of garrigue, then it turns rich and chewy on the long finish. It’s 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah, matured in a mix of foudres and oak vats.”
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “Editor’s Choice. Musky notes of fur, earth and violet lend seductive perfume to ripe but pristine blackberry in this stately wine. A powerful blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, it’s unctuously fruity but also firmly anchored by fresh mineral tones and chewy, gripping tannins. The finish lingers on hints of coffee grinds and violet candy.”

Clos Saint-Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône 2016 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 19 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 93 points
“Moving to the reds and 85% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Mourvèdre, the base 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a beauty and boasts appealing notes of spiced red and black fruits, cedar, and garrigue. Full-bodied, ripe and undeniably sexy, it’s going to benefit from a year or three in the cellar and drink nicely for over a decade.”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 92 points “The lush, fruit-forward 2016 Châteauneuf du Pape is a good introduction to the domaine’s Grenache-dominated style, boasting copious amounts of cherry and apricot fruit. It’s full-bodied and velvety in texture, with attractive hints of licorice emerging on the long finish. With its slightly more prominent acidity, it should drink well for longer than the 2015 or 2017 versions.”

Château Sixtine Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône 2016 1.5L ($99.95) $89 special, 11 magnums in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points
“The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Château Sixtine is the finest vintage of this cuvée ever made, surpassing the 2003, 2007, and 2010. Deep purple/ruby-colored, with a full-bodied, deep, powerful bouquet of blackcurrants, ground pepper, crushed violets, and spice, it’s full-bodied, has a voluptuous, powerful texture, sweet tannin, and a great, great finish, all while staying light and graceful. A blend of 50% Grenache and 25% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, it’s going to keep for two decades.”
James Molesworth – Wine Spectator 95 points “Sappy and intense, with a terrific beam of dark plum, boysenberry and blackberry fruit. The long finish shows a gorgeous graphite underpinning while flashes of Turkish coffee, licorice snap and roasted apple wood fill in. Great energy. Best from 2020 through 2040. 2,500 cases made, 500 cases imported.”
Wine Enthusiast 94 points “Editor’s Choice. This is a forward, fleshy wine full of sun-drenched blackberry and plum flavors edged by violet and lavender perfume. While rich and concentrated, it has an invigorating crush of minerals that lends freshness to the midpalate. Ripe, seamlessly integrated tannins make it immediately appealing but it should also reward cellaring through 2036.”

Domaine Saint Damien Gigondas ‘Les Souteyrades Vieilles Vignes’, Rhône 2017 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 95 points
“A blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre, the 2017 Gigondas les Souteyrades—from a clay-based, north-facing site—is rich and earthy, with cinnamon and cola notes accenting dark plums and black cherries. It’s full-bodied and velvety, adding hints of chocolate on the long finish.-JC”
Jeb Dunnuck 93 points “Black cherries, garrigue, leather, and a kiss of spice emerge from the 2017 Gigondas Les Souteyrades, which is Grenache and Mourvèdre brought up in foudre. It’s medium to full-bodied, has light tannins, beautiful balance, and a charming, elegant style. As with the other releases here in 2017, it’s a seamless, layered, complex wine that relies more on elegance and complexity than overt power and richness.”
Josh Raynolds – Vinous 93 points “Deep magenta. Deeply pitched aromas of red and blue fruit preserves, candied flowers and allspice show excellent clarity and mineral lift. Seamless and alluringly sweet, offering palate-staining cherry, blueberry and spicecake flavors that show noteworthy depth and back-end thrust. Finishes very long and smooth, with fine-grained tannins and resonating cherry and floral character.”

M. Chapoutier Ermitage l’Ermite, Rhône 2013 750ML ($299.95) $249 special, 11 bottles in stock now
James Molesworth – Wine Spectator 97 points
“Sleek, with mouthwatering flavors of red currant, raspberry and cherry preserves forming the core, while a dusting of cocoa, a snap of red licorice and a long, lingering iron spine complete the picture. Very pure and focused. The minerality wins out in the end. Best from 2019 through 2032. 29 cases imported.”
Josh Raynolds – Vinous 95 points “Bright purple. An impressively complex, expressive nose displays intense aromas of fresh dark berries, cherry cola, incense, allspice and smoky minerals. Spicy, deeply concentrated black and blue fruit flavors show superb focus and energy, and a suave floral pastille quality emerges as the wine opens up. Shows a compelling blend of richness and vivacity, finishing with superb lift, harmonious tannins and outstanding persistence.”
Jeb Dunnuck – Wine Advocate 96+ points “More backwards, tight and structured than either the Méal or the Pavillon, the 2013 Ermitage l’Ermite was similarly completely destemmed and raised in a scant 30% new French oak. Inky purple/blue colored, it reluctantly yields incredibly mineral-laced notes of charcoal, liquid rock, cassis, black currants and graphite. While it’s less approachable than either of the two other Hermitages, it has fabulous density and depth, ripe tannin and incredible persistence on the finish. Hide these in the cellar for a decade, and enjoy over the following three to four decades.”

“What a nose of dried meat, tar, tobacco, dried boysenberries, red licorice and baking spices. Hearty tannins surround the full-bodied palate from every side, wringing bursting acidity from a full-throttle core of ripe, chewy fruit. The power and intensity are undeniable, but as you seep in the rich dried spices and dried meat on the finish, you catch a glimpse of crystalline acidity through the looking glass. Drink in 2025.”

“Cellar Sellection. Under the same management as Château Léoville-Poyferré in Saint-Julien, this estate belongs to the Cuvelier family. With its structured Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is made to age. Big tannins and concentrated fruits are full and dense.”
James Suckling 93 points “The purity of the cabernet sauvignon is very evident here with currant and floral character. Full-bodied, firm and very polished with lovely, strong tannins. Muscular and polished. Give it three or four years to come together.”
James Molesworth – Wine Spectator 92 points “Well-built, featuring dark plum and blackberry coulis flavors that impart a dark yet racy feel, while light charcoal, chalk and wet pebble notes keep the finish grounded in terroir. An echo of tobacco rings throughout.”

Chateau Malescot-St-Exupery, Margaux 2014 750ML ($99.95) $59 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 96 points
“Dark currants and berries with walnuts on the nose. Follows through to a full body, integrated tannins and a gorgeous finish. Exciting. Wow.”
Jeb Dunnuck 93 points “I put the 2014 Malescot Saint Exupery up with the crème de la crème of this vintage and it offers a wonderfully complete, balanced, concentrated style offers loads of class and personality. With loads of blackcurrant and black cherry fruits intermixed with notions of graphite/lead pencil, spring flowers, and damp earth, it’s medium to full-bodied, beautifully pure, layered, and ripe, with sweet tannin and rock-solid underlying acidity. This is a straight up gorgeous, classy, elegant Margaux that’s going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and shine for 15-20 years.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points “The 2014 Malescot Saint Exupéry is powerful, rich and explosive. One of the more exuberant, flamboyant Margaux that readers will come across, the Malescot exudes serious depth and intensity. Black cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and dark spice meld into the deep, succulent finish. The 2014 needs time in bottle, but it is impressive and also highly promising.”
James Molesworth – Wine Spectator 93 points “Alluring, with lapsang souchong notes that weave around the core of gently steeped red and black currant and plum fruit flavors. A strong graphite edge marks the finish, giving this excellent cut and drive. Very suave.”

The average listed price nationally is $100

Château Gloria, Saint-Julien 2016 750ML ($79.95) $59 pre-arrival special
James Molesworth – Wine Spectator 94 points
“This has a slightly chunky feel now, with bramble and tar notes jutting out a bit, but the core is saturated with cassis and blackberry fruit flavors and there’s fun energy throughout. Offers a lovely tug of sweet tobacco detail on the finish too. Just let this settle in the cellar. Best from 2024 through 2038.”

Château d’Issan, Margaux 2016 750ML ($119.95) $89 pre-arrival special
Jane Anson – Decanter 97 points
“Tight and closed but clearly going to power out of the gate in five or six years. Shows depth and persistency, with precision and balance to the fruit flavours, feels like every base is covered, laced through with liquorice, cinnamon and black chocolate, and although there is power it has a light touch. A delicious wine, long life ahead, note it down for the future. Drinking Window 2026 – 2045.”
James Suckling 96 points “The brightness and precision already comes through on the nose with floral, blackcurrant character. Full-bodied and very tight and creamy with polished tannins that last for minutes. Warm and intense. Needs four to five years to show all it has, yet already a beauty.”

Winery Note
” 90% Sangiovese grosso from Lamole, 10% Canaiolo old vineyards cultivated at 550 mts. Ruby red with light purple reflections. Villa Cafaggio Basilica del Cortaccio Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2015 750ML ($49.95) $27 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 93 points
“From a special 4.2-hectare plot of Cabernet Sauvignon in Panzano in Chianti, the 2015 Basilica del Cortaccio is very true to this French grape. The wine’s appearance is darkly saturated and rich, with little light breaking through. The bouquet offers full-force black fruit with shadings of spice and cedar. The wine’s Tuscan side is also very apparent thanks to those Mediterranean aromas of summer cherry and Italian rosemary and dried oregano. The tannins are soft and well-integrated into the thick fiber of this medium to full-bodied Tuscan red. Open it alongside a tomato and basil tortellini. Some 25,000 bottles were made. Cafaggio farms 30 hectares of vines in Panzano positioned at an ideal 350 to 420 meters above sea level. The estate completed its conversion to organic farming in 2017.”

Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 2016 750ML ($34.95) $28 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 94 points
“Streamlined and elegant, this mid-weight red trots out notes of grilled herb and dark fruit nuances that segue to spice, tilled earth and savory tobacco, with great complexity. This 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardenga is still a bit closed and tight, but this beautiful wine boasts all the best qualities of this vintage. It shows elegance and power, two contrasting characteristics that only work well together in the world’s most achieved expressions. The most satisfying aspect of this Riserva is the crisp acidity on the close that keeps the palate refreshed and ready for the next sip.”
Bruce Sanderson – Wine Spectator 93 points “This red offers density and focus, creating an ideal frame for the cherry, strawberry, almond, leather and earth flavors. A firm backbone of tannins lends structure and the finish persists, leaving an accent of bitter almond. Best from 2022 through 2040.”

Lodovico Antinori Campo di Sasso Insoglio del Cinghiale Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2017 750ML ($44.95) $28 special, 19 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 92 points
“The 2017 Insoglio Del Cinghiale is fabulous. That’s pretty much all there is to it. Rich, boisterous and super-expressive, the 2017 captures all of the natural radiance of this warm, dry year in its soft curves and voluptuous personality. Succulent red cherry, raspberry jam, mocha, spice and leather all build as the 2017 shows off its alluring personality. Although perhaps not the last word on complexity, the 2017 is flat-out delicious and so easy to drink. Another few years in bottle will favor the development of more nuance, but the 2017 is virtually impossible to resist now.”
James Suckling 92 points “Gorgeous brambleberries, roasted herbs and soaked blueberries show on the nose and follow through to a full body with ripe tannins and a fruity finish. Spicy, too. A blend of syrah, cabernet franc, merlot and petit verdot. Drink now.”

Piaggia – Vannucci Il Sasso, Carmignano DOCG 2016 750ML ($37.95) $29 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 93 points
“Dedicated to the estate’s paternal figure Mauro Vannucci, the 2016 Carmignano Il Sasso (with 40,000 bottles produced) is a compelling blend of 70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. This vintage delivers ample power, yet the wine remains smooth and elegant from a tactile point of view. Sangiovese’s identity emerges with aromas of wild berry, tilled earth and rose hip. The two international grapes serve to shape the firmness and structure of the mouthfeel. This wine is fermented in oak and later aged in medium-toast neutral barrique for 12 months.”
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2016 Carmignano Il Sasso is a veritable explosion of aromas, flavors and textures. A rush of dark red and purplish berry fruit makes a strong opening statement. The interplay of rich fruit, expressive aromatics and brightness makes for a wonderfully complete, vibrant Carmignano that will be impossible to resist upon release. The 2016 is a wine of pure and total pleasure.”

“Plum, fragrant blue flower, leather and ripe berry are just some of the aromas you’ll find on this fragrant, delicious wine. It’s chewy and enveloping but also boasts a weightless elegance, delivering juicy Marasca cherry, cranberry compote, licorice and tobacco while velvety fine-grained tannins offer polished support. Drink through 2023.”
James Suckling 93 points “The nose of this Chianti Classico is unique, with abundant fresh rose petals, orange zest and lemon peel. Medium-bodied and very lithe yet firm on the palate. Elegant and very taut and tangy on the finish. So well done in a challenging vintage. Drink now.”

Azienda Agricola La Torre Rosso di Montalcino, Tuscany 2016 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 11 bottles in stock now
Grapelive 95 points
“The 2016 is going to be legendary in Tuscany. We are seeing the top wines already getting unbelievably good press, but there are also some killer deals on lesser known wines, especially wines like this gorgeous deep fruited and elegant La Torre Rosso di Montalcino. [Such wines] are incredible and offer a wonderful value for much less than their Brunello version. Lighter on its feet than the Brunello(s) the Rosso [shows] style and grace, it shows a complex array of flavors and a sense of never-ending length with a beautiful rose petal perfume and exotic spices. This La Torre has, what it is cliche to say, Burgundy class in the glass with ripe tannins and a gorgeous garnet/ruby hue that seduces the senses with layers of black cherry, raspberry, strawberry and plum fruits to begin on its open and generous palate with gains structure with air as well as highlighting the background elements, mineral notes and light earthiness. Additionally there is classic anise, fine cigar tobacco wrapper, sandalwood and lingering dried flowers and cranberry/currant, making for a lovely Sangiovese wine that gets even better with food, bringing out more depth and fruit intensity. There is almost nothing to fault here and the detailing and mouth feel is exceptional in this remarkable Rosso di Montalcino. This is a wine that needs to be taken out of the “Baby Brunello” box; it is really next level stuff on its own. The La Torre winery was founded not all that long ago by Italian standards back in 1976 by Giuseppe Ananìa, who purchased the La Torre estate from the famous Ciacci family of Montalcino. Now Luigi Anania, Giuseppe’s son, is the present owner and producer of the wines of La Torre. The estate is located in the commune of La Sesta, approximately 8 kilometers south of Montalcino, which is in the highest altitude section of the Brunello appellation. La Torre make four main wines, all from organic vines: Brunello di Montalcino (with a Riserva in the best years as well), Rosso di Montalcino, with the Brunello and Rosso being exclusively Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello Clone) by law, as well as a Rosso di Toscano and a Rosso di Toscano “Ampelio” which have touches of Ciliegiolo and Alicante added to a mainline of Sangiovese. The wines are all made from all grapes that are de-stemmed prior to fermentations and only indigenous yeasts are used before an extended 20 maceration on the skins. Ferments are done in a combination of steel and oak with an 18 month elevage being in large oak casks of French origin, with only about 10% of the ultimate cuvée being aged in small French barrels. Made for more early drinking pleasure and a sublime vintage really show here and I absolute love this stuff. Judging it purely on its intent and delivery it is fantastic, drink this brilliantly crafted beauty over the next 3 to 5 years.”

Siro Pacenti PS Rosso di Montalcino, Tuscany 2018 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 14 bottles in stock now
Ian D’agata-Vinous 92 points
“Pale red; this wine’s very pretty color strikes me as being one of the less dark Rossos made by Pacenti in years. Inviting floral notes (rose, violet) complement strawberry, red cherry and delicate flint and herb aromas. Then very fresh and juicy, with a steely quality to the red fruit and herb flavors that are really perked up by a strong peppery component on the long, lively youthfully chewy finish. Made from 15 years old Sangiovese vines, this is a really lovely fruit-forward and also surprisingly spicy Rosso di Montalcino. 25% new oak for 12 -3 months.”

Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 2017 750ML ($41.95) $33 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Case-12 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 2017 750ML ($499.95) $385 special (that’s only $32.08/bottle)
Antonio Galloni 93 points
“The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Castello di Volpaia is an immensely rewarding, inviting wine. Juicy and racy, with no hard edges, the Riserva captures the allure of this warm, dry year. There is plenty to like in the 2017, starting with its depth and volume, I won’t be surprised if the Riserva turns out to be even better than this note suggests. Sweet red fruit, cedar and blood orange give the 2017 striking aromatic intensity and lift.”
Importer Note “The Chianti Classico Riserva has a ruby-red hue with a trace of garnet. The nose is elegant, displaying hints of spice and fruit. This a well-structured wine with smooth tannins and a long finish. Barrel Aging: 24 months in oak casks (combination of Slovenian and French) and minimum 3 months in bottle. Varietal Composition: 100% Sangiovese. A record year for heat and drought throughout the growing season. This condition presented extremes which began early bud break in the vineyard, followed by a spring frost over late April. The frost affected the lower portions of the Volpaia estate. Spring and summer months were dry with higher than average temperatures. Rainfall in mid-September helped the grapes achieve complete ripeness of tannins and other phenolic compounds despite low yields.”

Tenuta Fanti Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2015 750ML ($49.95) $33 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
James Suckling 95 points
“There’s a beautiful interplay between bright, primary florals, such as rose petals and tulips and dust, hay bale and dried raspberries. The palate suggests a ripe, powerful persona with chewy, juicy tannins and a fine line of pretty acidity. Best ever. Drink in 2022.”

Podere Le Boncie Cinque – 5 Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2018 750ML ($49.95) $33 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Rosenthal note
“Giovanna calls her second wine “Cinque,” a dual reference to the five grape varieties planted at Le Boncie and to the Italian grading system, in which a 5 (out of 10) constitutes not quite passing (Giovanna is atypically and charmingly self-effacing for a Tuscan). Part comes from the non-gobelet-trained vines of her original three-hectare farm, and another part from a recently acquired 1.3-hectare parcel called “Chiesa Monte,” three kilometers from Le Boncie and just outside the limit of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Giovanna ferments “Cinque” in a combination of cement and steel, with a slightly briefer maceration than “Le Trame,” and ages it in large botti for roughly one year less than the flagship wine. The result is slightly less structured and gentler, but still deeply expressive of both the warm generosity of Castelnuovo Berardenga and of Giovanna’s caressingly pure style. 2018 was a rainy and relatively tough growing season, but one would never know if from this wine, which is lithe, supple, and open for business even at this youthful stage.”

I Fabbri Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 2015 750ML ($39.95) $34.50 special, 30 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“100% Lamole Sangiovese grosso.  Intense ruby red color; ample scent of good intensity and persistence with typical notes of red fruits combined with floral hints of violets. The taste is harmonious, of great structure; red fruit and oak combined in a pleasant and persistent finish. Aging is in 500-liter barrels of French oak from the central massif for 12 months.”
