Case-12 Chateau Grand Corbin, Saint-Emilion 2016 750ML ($599.95) $449 pre-arrival special (that’s only $37.42/bottle!)
James Suckling 93 points
“Attractive dark-stone aromas with graphite and ripe dark berries sit fresh on the nose. The palate has a riper feel with very rich, dense fruit presence and a heavier, tannin line weight. Full body. Try from 2022.”
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2016 Grand Corbin has grown into a powerful, dense Saint-Émilion. This is a fairly rich, bombastic style, and yet all the elements fall into place. I would give the 2016 a few years in bottle to allow the tannins to soften, but there is good depth and plenty of potential. A rush of chocolate, leather, licorice, smoke and black cherry meld into the potent finish. Tasted three times with consistent notes.”

New Week – New Arrivals

Oregon

Goodfellow Family Cellars Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($26.95) $22.75 special
Winery note
“Modest yields combined with a cool growing season led to a very ideal set of Chardonnays in 2019. These are light to medium bodied wines, with great depth, structure, and acidity.  Alcohols are between 11.8-12.8%, giving them a weightlessness, balanced by textural richness from extended elevage on the lees. Flavors are a seamless transition from attack to the finish, and they are more sinewy than soft. While it may seem overly dramatic, as I tasted through the line up, I kept thinking of looking at an exhibit of Samurai swords that came through Portland several years ago. While they will be fine to consume young, these wines scream for a few years in the cellar and I believe will be absolutely outstanding in 5-15 years.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Pinot Noir Heritage No. 11 Durant Vineyard, Dundee Hills 2018 750ML ($69.95) $61.90 special
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2018 Pinot Noir Heritage No. 11 Durant has a haunting beauty, calling you back to the glass again and again. It has lovely scents of red and black berries laced with floral perfume plus accents of tea leaves, aniseed and tobacco. The medium-bodied palate is grainy and very fresh with loads of spices and a very long, detailed finish.”
Josh Raynolds – Vinous 95 points “Limpid garnet. An impressively complex bouquet evokes vibrant, spice-accented red berries and pungent flowers that show fine definition and lift. Stains the palate with sweet, energetic cherry, raspberry, rose pastille and spicecake flavors that deepen and take a darker turn on the back half. Shows outstanding definition and power on the impressively long, penetrating finish, which is framed by talc-y, slowly mounting tannins. 100% whole clusters.  Drinking window 2024-2033. “
Winery Note “Deeply garnet, beautiful color. Expressive but restrained, begins with red cherries and layers of brown spices. With air, becomes beautifully filigreed, dense yet weightless, loamy earth, thyme, smoke, tobacco, deep red fruits and florals, red satin quality to the nose. Quintessential Dundee Hills. Middle weight, juicy, full fruit, layers of spice yet little sweetness, and very fine savory  tannins. Vinous, youthfully exuberant now, but with obvious upside. Tremendous on day two. So good. Drink 2025-2038.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Pinot Noir Heritage No. 12 Whistling Ridge Vineyard, Ribbon Ridge 2018 750ML ($69.95) $61.90 special
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Pale ruby, the 2018 Pinot Noir Heritage No. 12 Whistling Ridge is scented of red and black berries with loads of floral perfume and forest floor-like nuances. The palate is delicate but intense, its layered, spicy flavors wrapped in a silky texture, with a long, juicy finish.”
Josh Raynolds – Vinous 94 points “Deep, bright-hued scarlet. Powerful red and dark berry, cherry pit, exotic spice and licorice scents take on a suave floral topnote with air. Stains the palate with appealingly sweet, spice-tinged cherry, black raspberry and boysenberry flavors that steadily firm up through the midpalate. Conveys a suave blend of depth and finesse and finishes extremely long and precise, with polished tannins coming in late.   Drinking window 2022-2030.”
Winery Note “Deeply fragrant. Dense, tranquil, ripe dark red cherry and strawberry, strawberry leaf, summer garden.  Lilacs, lavender, and brown spices. Succulent juicy ripe fruits, excellent energy, weightless but juicy and full, finishing with bright acidity and firm tannins. Opens to cherry blossoms, strawberry pie, bright red currant and apple, wonderful balance between fruit and savory finish. This is the first year that this wine has been crafted from the best of three blocks: House, Long and Beloved. Longevity will not be a problem for this wine, but it has plenty of fruit for some early looks.  Lovely now over a few days, I think that with air this really shows well and should continue to integrate over the next year. Then drink from 2023-2030”

Ansel Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2018 750ML ($21.95) $19 special
Michael Alberty, The Oregonian/OregonLive
“This wine has a secret. I can tell you it is made by Graham Markel of Buona Notte Wines and experienced wine hand Jeremy Byrd. I can tell you they purchased barrels of pinot noir from a handful of well-known Willamette Valley wineries to make the Ansel. I can’t, however, tell you which wineries as Markel and Byrd are sworn to secrecy… It smells like cherries and carnations, with a whiff of a grape popsicle in the background. Flavors of bittersweet dark chocolate and wild strawberries positively glide over taste buds like Yuzuru Hanyu on open ice. The Ansel makes it way too easy to pour a second glass. If you do, make sure something from The Bar-Kays is on the turntable.”

Suzanne:
Luscious tart cherry and cream. A vibrant rosé with plenty of stuffing. Drink now with light spring & summer fare.
Winery note “With an eye toward Provence, we set out to make our first “Intentional” Rosé of Pinot Noir. Picked early from young Pinot Noir vines then lightly pressed, our rosé was aged half in stainless steel and half in neutral barrels. Beckoning the warmer days ahead, floral and sea breeze aromas join with a zingy palate of yuzu, white pear and watermelon. Balanced with a hint of sweetness, this wine intends to bring the flavors of summer to your glass. Our intention: to quench, beguile & delight!”

California

Stonestreet Estate Vineyards Chardonnay, Alexander Valley 2017 750ML ($34.95) $24 special
Wine & Spirits 94 points
“Lisa Valtenbergs blends this wine from parcels on the Jackson family’s Alexander Mountain Estate, a 5,500-acre property on the western slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains. This is a classic California chardonnay in the best sense: A fresh, oak-guided beauty in shades of green-gold and white. Oak contributes a hint of butterscotch sweetness to an otherwise savory wine, layering scents of white roses, apples and wildflower honey through a lasting finish. The wine feels gracious, perplexing, intense and pure. —J.G.”
Jeb Dunnuck 92 points “Moving to the Chardonnays, the 2017 Chardonnay Estate was fermented and aged 11 months in 33% new French oak. It’s a clean and crisp, with terrific notes of stone fruits, brioche, and white flowers. Possessing medium to full body, ample pure fruit, and a balanced style, drink it over the coming 4-5 years.”

France – Champagne

Bollinger R.D., Champagne 2004 1.5L ($699.95) $499 special, only 2 magnums available!
Wine Enthusiast #53 WOTY 2019 – Cellar Selections
Wine Enthusiast 98 points
“The wine’s name stands for recently disgorged and this vintage Champagne was taken off its lees in 2018. That gave many years for it to develop its depth of flavor, richness and beautifully memorable toasty flavors. Drink through 2028. -Roger Voss.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97 points “Fermented in oak barrels and aged under natural corks for almost 13 years, Bollinger’s 2004 R. D. Extra Brut blends 66% Pinot Noir with 34% Chardonnay from 16 crus, 88% of which are classified as Grand Cru. The wine opens with a very clear, deep, rich and aromatic but also pure and mineral-fresh nose of crushed rocks, cherries, brioche, pain aux raisin, white nougat, chalk and ripe, yellow-fleshed fruits. Highly elegant and complex on the weightless yet persistent and salty palate, this is an intense, densely woven, firmly structured yet elegant, beautifully refined and refreshing “recent disgorgement” (February 2018) that reveals just a kiss of oxidative flavors that adds even more complexity. A great Champagne on its way to improve over many years in the bottle. Tasted June 2018.”
Antonio Galloni 96 points “Bollinger’s 2004 R.D., tasted from magnum, is all class. Silky and understated, the R.D is super-expressive and inviting today. In 2004, the R.D. is decidedly light on its feet and more perfumed than tends to be the norm at Bollinger. Candied lemon peel, mint, apricot, pastry and yellow fruits are all laced together in a Champagne that delivers the goods. The 2004 is 66% Pinot Noir and 34% Chardonnay picked between September 25 and October 8. Disgorged: November 21, 2017.”
Wine Spectator 96 points “The lovely nose of acacia blossom, toast and graphite leads to flavors of poached quince, fleur de sel, white cherry, lemon pith and almond skin in this dry and harmonious Champagne. Almost airy and ethereal in texture, yet the finely woven flavor range goes on and on, echoing on the finish. Disgorged June 2017. Drink now through 2034. 301 cases imported. — AN”

Pommery Cuvee Louise Brut Millesime, Champagne 2004 1.5L ($299.95) $279 special
James Suckling 95 points
“A very fine-textured Champagne with lovely density and finesse. The bubbles roll off the palate. Full body. Extremely creamy and flavorful. Shows wonderful finesse and a lovely, chalky, lemon-curd and brioche aftertaste. Drink now.”
Wine Enthusiast 94 points “Pommery’s prestige Champagne is named after one of the great Champagne widows of the 19th century who took over when her husband, Alexandre Pommery, died. It is a rich, mature wine, with toast and almond flavors as much as fruit. Full of mineral Chardonnay (60% of the blend), this ripe wine is very ready to drink.”
Wine Spectator 93 points “Bright and minerally, featuring smoke and pastry dough notes layered with lemon curd and pureed black currant details, riding the lively bead. Offers a creamy finish, with a lightly floral overtone. Drink now through 2024. 16,666 cases made.”

De Venoge ‘Princes’ Tour Eiffel 130 Anniversary Edition, Champagne NV 750ML ($99.95) $79 special
Envie de Champagne
“The Maison De Venoge was founded in 1837 by Henri-Marc De Venoge. Innovation in the production and marketing of champagnes were the founding values of this of champagne house, which won the Excellence Price in Philadelphia in 1876. A few years later, in 1889, during the World Fair in Paris, the house became the partner of the event. This exhibition celebrated the centenary of the French Revolution and it is on this occasion that the Tower designed by Gustave Eiffel has been inaugurated. This monument, with a height of 312 meters during its construction can now 337 meters in 2019 following the installation of antennas. In addition to its cultural and tourist use, the Eiffel Tower is used as a transmitter for TV and radio programs. The Eiffel Tower, object of discord at the time of its creation has become today the most visited paying monument of France. It has about 7 million visitors a year. It is also inseparable from the history of the French capital. For the 130 years of this first collaboration, De Venoge signs a beautiful partnership with the company in charge of the exploitation of the iron lady (surname of the Eiffel Tower). This collaboration is obvious because of the common history of both parties but also because of the characteristic shape of the bottles of the Princes cuvée. This limited edition vintage is named “Cuvée Princes Tour Eiffel”. Only 10,000 bottles have been marketed for this partnership.”

Pommery Grand Cru Brut Millesime, Champagne 2008 750ML ($79.95) $69 special
Winery note
“It was a must for Pommery not to miss out on one of the greatest vintages of champagne. One single term to characterise 2008: unexpected! After a difficult summer, nature succeeded in aligning its stars and allowed us to have an exceptional harvest. 2008 has already conquered aficionados from all over the world, but it is a special vision of 2008 in the pure style of our Maison that we propose to you. Only originating from grands crus, with an exceptional ageing potential, slowly brought to maturity in the freshness of our 18 kilometres of galleries, it is necessary to wait to taste a Pommery vintage at its zenith: the precise moment when all the components are in harmony and when maturity, freshness and complexity come together. This moment has come for our 2008 vintage. The nose presents the patina of the Pommery vintages: elegance, minerality, freshness. First of all intense floral notes reach us: the peony floats around the hawthorn. Maturity is expressed by fruity notes of pear and fresh apricot. The great Pinot Noir present themselves with notes of crushed fresh strawberries. On the palate, the tasting is floating, with a great uprightness. A mineral structure fills the palate from the attack to the finish like a spine. Notes of acacia honey and Mirabelle underline the central element of the tasting. The finish is punctuated by a nice sweetness, marked by flavours of blood orange.”

Lilbert-Fils Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($69.95) $49 special
Wine Spectator 93 points
“This graceful Champagne is like the finely tailored suit that somehow never goes out of style, with a lovely overtone of minerally chalk and brine enticing you into the glass, where flavors of apricot and Marcona almond, and hints of passionfruit coulis and pickled ginger, ride the fine, satinlike mousse. Disgorged autumn 2018. Drink now through 2028.”

Charles Heidsieck Brut Millesime, Champagne 2008 750ML ($119.95) $99 special
Wine Enthusiast 97 points
“Editor’s Choice. Aged for 10 years on its lees before disgorgement, this impressive vintage Champagne is perfectly mature. The touches of maturity have moved the wine into richness, the fruit and acidity filling out and deepening. This is a great Champagne from a great vintage, ready to drink. -Roger Voss”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2008 Brut Millésimé from Charles Hedsieck continues to perform superbly, opening in the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of pear, yellow apple, citrus oil, honeycomb, dried white flowers and warm biscuits. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, deep and incisive, with a racy spine of acidity, a pinpoint mousse, excellent concentration and a long, elegantly chalky finish. This 2008 is still several years from showing all its cards, but it is a brilliant Champagne in the making.”

Italy – Tuscany

Tenuta Argentiera ‘Argentiera’ Bolgheri Superiore, Tuscany 2016 750ML ($99.95) $79 special
Case-6 Tenuta Argentiera ‘Argentiera’ Bolgheri Superiore, Tuscany 2016 750ML ($599.95) $449 special (that’s only $74.83/bottle!)
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97 points
“The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Argentiera is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, and the Cabernet Sauvignon logically feels and tastes most prominent. This is a dark and penetrating Tuscan red that is beautifully elevated, thanks to the extremely elegant and buoyant quality of the aromas. They lift gracefully from the glass with light-footed, almost fleeting character. However, don’t underestimate the power and the concentration of the wine, because this vintage delivers both with abundance. I’ve had my eye on this estate since the vineyards were first planted some 20 years ago, and there is no doubt that this vintage brings Tenuta Argentiera into a new era as a Bolgheri protagonist. Some 80,000 bottles were made.”

Tenuta Fanti ‘Vallocchio’, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015 750ML ($69.95) $49 special
James Suckling 97 points
“What a nose of dried meat, tar, tobacco, dried boysenberries, red licorice and baking spices. Hearty tannins surround the full-bodied palate from every side, wringing bursting acidity from a full-throttle core of ripe, chewy fruit. The power and intensity are undeniable, but as you seep in the rich dried spices and dried meat on the finish, you catch a glimpse of crystalline acidity through the looking glass. Drink in 2025.”

France – Bordeaux

Esprit de Pavie, Bordeaux 2015 750ML ($27.95) $24 special
Case-6 Esprit de Pavie, Bordeaux 2015 750ML ($169.95) $136 special (that’s only $22.67/bottle!)
James Suckling 93 points
“A juicy and rich red with blackberry and black-truffle aromas and flavors. Layered and beautifully toned. Full-bodied, round and juicy. Beautiful wine. Really well done. Drink or hold.”
Wine Advocate 90 points “This vintage is a blend of 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged for 15 months in one-year-old barrels. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Esprit de Pavie (a blend of vines in Côtes do Castillon and young vines from Pavie and Monbousquet) opens with expressive red and black plums notes plus touches of baking spices, vanilla pod, dark chocolate and dried Provence herbs. Medium to full-bodied, the bright fruit fills the mouth with plenty of spicy red and black fruits, supported by chewy tannins and finishing with a refreshing lift.”

Angelique de Monbousquet, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2016 750ML ($39.95) $30.90 special
James Suckling 93 points
“Unique aromas of cherries, ash and grilled meat. Full body with juicy tannins and round texture. Delicious finish. Very soft and approachable. Hard not to drink now. Better in 2024.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2016 Angelique de Monbousquet is deep garnet-purple colored and features bold scents of crushed blackberries, warm plums and raspberry pie with hints of dried herbs, underbrush and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals loads of minerally sparks interspersed with the vibrant red and black fruit layers, finishing pleasantly chewy.”
Jeb Dunnuck 90 points “From the stellar team at Château Pavie, the 2016 Angélique de Monbousquet is a sexy, medium to full-bodied, incredibly delicious Saint-Emilion that boasts a huge nose of blackcurrants, chocolate, tobacco leaf, and graphite. It has outstanding purity, ripe tannins, and is one seriously good mouthful of wine. Drink it over the coming decade.”

Italy – Piedmont

E. Pira & Figli Chiara Boschis Mosconi, Barolo DOCG 2015 750ML ($99.95) $79 special
James Suckling 97 points
“Aromatic depth here, drawing you in with cascading layers of flowers and leaves, fresh-tilled earth laced with woody spices, white pepper and fresh red fruit. The palate carries a very sturdy frame of fine, dense tannins. This is placed in the top league of 2015 Barolo wines. Long and succulent build through the finish. Try from 2024.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points “All of the wines from Chiara Boschis are more vinous this year, more natural. They feel authentic, genuine and traditional. They show an extra degree of richness or texture, and the 2015 Barolo Mosconi is no exception. Its dark and spicy notes are very polished and graceful in this vintage but with considerable tightness to the tannins that will soften with time. This wine offers ample volume and girth, but it carries its weight with elegance. Once the bottle has reached maturity, it would be a great pairing match to rabbit.”
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2015 Barolo Mosconi is striking in this vintage. The natural richness of the year seems especially well suited to this Monforte site, where the wines tend to be born with a natural sense of textural breadth and volume. Black cherry, chocolate, spice, new leather and menthol grow in the glass in a full-bodied, virile Barolo that speaks to power above all else.”
Decanter 93 points “The personable Chiara Boschis is based in the town of Barolo, but this wine comes from 1ha in Monforte. It’s a fairly new addition to her range, and a very successful one albeit in a far from traditional style. The colour is deep and the nose voluptuous and smoky, with cherry-pie aromas. The palate is full-bodied, plump and suave, infused with dark fruits. Fortunately there is balancing acidity to cut through the richness. Harmonious, with a long, piquant finish.”

One of the greatest vintages ever for the Produttori Barbaresco normale
Produttori del Barbaresco ‘Barbaresco DOCG’, Piedmont 2016 750ML ($59.95) $44.50 special
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2016 Barbaresco is a tight and beautiful wine that will require more time to unwind and soften. This beautifully balanced vintage is characterized by a tight inner core of fruit that underlines the graceful aging capacity of these wines. The 2016 is shaping up to be one destined for long cellar aging. Now in its youth, the wine offers wild berry, rose and licorice aromas.”
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “Cellar Selection. Enticing aromas of violet, woodland berry, loose vineyard soil, wild mint and a hint of spearmint shape the intensely fragrant nose. The tense, young palate is still nervous but already boasts finesse, showing wild raspberry, crunchy red cherry, white pepper and star anise. Firm, refined tannins and racy acidity give it a linear, almost austere elegance, while bright acidity keeps it focused and balanced. Drink 2026-2036.”
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2016 Barbaresco is a stunning wine with tremendous richness for this bottling. Ample, deep and powerful, the 2016 exudes pedigree and class from start to finish. I can’t remember a straight Barbaresco here with this much fruit density and unctuous richness, and yet there is more than enough tannin and overall structure to give the wine its classically leaning feel. A blast of sweet red cherry fruit, tobacco, menthol licorice and smoke hits the potent finish. What a wine!”

Bodegas Pedro Martinez Alesanco Crianza, Rioja DOCa 2017 750ML ($19.95) $16 special
Winery note
“Our most admired wine and the one which has received the most awards, made from Tempranillo and Garnacha, reminding of red and black berries with hints of vanilla, chocolate and licorice that blend with fine, smoky final notes. 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha from our own vineyards in Badarán. The wine stays in American oak barrels with a toasty background for 12 months and rests for another 12 months in the bottle before being released to the market. Appearance: Bright cherry red with maroon hues. Clean, with upper-middle robe. Aroma: Aromas of red and black berries with aging notes, vanilla, balsamic chocolate and a varietal background. R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia ‘Vina Cubillo’ Crianza, Rioja DOCa 2012 750ML ($39.95) $28 special
James Suckling 95 points
“Wonderful aromas of mushrooms, bark, cigar tobacco and plums with just a hint of citrus. Full-bodied with incredible softness and complexity. Subtle chocolate, fruit and walnut in the aftertaste. Goes on for minutes. Fantastic wine. Classic, textbook Rioja. A joy. Incredible value! Drink or hold.”
Luiz Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 93 points “I was quite impressed by the 2012 Viña Cubillo Tinto Crianza, a classical Rioja that is nicely crafted, with less aging in barrel than the rest of reds and therefore with more fruit character and less López de Heredia signature. This was born as a red for tapas, a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho and 5% each Graciano and Mazuelo with 13.5% alcohol. It matured in well-seasoned American oak barrels for three years. It has ripe fruit (black rather than red) without excess and a pinch of spices and a twist of oak. 94,500 bottles produced. There are seven lots of this. I tasted a bottled that was filled in May 2018.”

Peter Lauer ‘Barrel X’ Saar Riesling, Mosel 2020 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special
Vom Boden note
“The most important category of Lauer wines we’ll call the “terroir” wines. These are the Rieslings that have made Lauer so famous. These wines eschew the whole Prädikat system (Kabinett, Spätlese, etc) completely. They ferment spontaneously with natural yeasts and thus they find their own balance. In most cases they have a bit more residual sugar than a purely dry wine, yet not nearly enough sugar to be considered sweet. Let’s call them dry-tasting to off dry. First, there is the appellation-level Barrel X. This is Lauer’s Platonic ideal of what a Saar Riesling should be. If we were in Burgundy this would be the equivalent of a Bourgogne Blanc. As an appellation-level wine, it is sourced from multiple vineyards in three different villages of the Saar. This is always a thrilling off-dry and a silly value.”

Cuvelier Los Andes Grand Vin, Vista Flores 2015 750ML ($39.95) $31.90 special
Stephen Tanzer – Vinous 93 points
“Bright medium ruby. Inviting aromas of blackcurrant, dark raspberry, bitter chocolate, licorice and cedary French oak. Plush, velvety and sweet, with its shapely flavors of black fruits and chocolatey oak carrying through to a harmonious, unflagging finish featuring noble tannins that saturate the front teeth. Generous, sweet, broad wine with lovely mineral support contributing to an impression of balance and thrust. Seems clearly riper than the 2016 version, not to mention easier to taste today. My sample became more exotic with 48 hours in the recorked bottle without losing its grip.”

Hot Wine Alert!

G Borgogno’s Timorasso

Borgogno is one of the most distinguished names in Piedmont. The wines are made in a traditional fashion, but with more attention to detail, care, and better farming. What has resulted from all of this hard work is some of the region’s most incredible and age-worthy wines.  Timorasso is a native white variety that has the potential to become one of the world’s classic cellar-worthy whites. Don’t fret if you’ve never heard of Timorasso, it nearly went extinct during the 20th century. But it has since been revived and is developing a cult-like following in Piedmont and beyond.

Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Derthona Timorasso Colli Tortonesi, Piedmont 2018 750ML ($69.95) $54.50 special
Grapelive 94 point
“A few years ago, Walter Massa of Vigneti Massa almost single handedly brought the rare Timorasso grape back from extinction and now it is one of the hottest white wines made in the Piedmonte region. We are seeing many great producers jumping on the bandwagon, including the famed Vietti and this beautiful expression by the legendary Barolo maker Borgogno. Tasted at Slow Wine earlier this year, the 2018 Borgogno Derthona DOC should be arriving to the United States soon, though you’ll have to really work hard to get your hands on it as it is extremely limited, but you’ll be greatly rewarded for your hard work and search if you get your hands on it. Borgogno’s Timorasso from organic vines is lightly floral, medium bodied with a lovely texture and fine minerality. It delivers a polished and lively performance highlighting the grape’s best qualities with layers of peach, citrus and quince fruits, leesy notes, white flowers and an array of herb and spices along with a nice saline and wet stone element. Derthona is the ancient name for Tortona, the town in southeast Piemonte, hence the appellation Colli Tortonesi (Tortona Hills) name. The Timorasso is widely believed to be one of the longest-aging white varieties in Italy, with many of the producers saying it takes a few years to get itself together in the bottle, adding a depth of flavor and making more of a palate impact with honeyed notes. It deserves serious attention, going well with a variety of foods including poultry, pork and fatty fish and decedent shellfish, even lobster or crab dishes. The Borgogno Timorasso doesn’t come cheap compared to other examples, like the Massa, which I also recommend trying, but it is a gorgeous white wine that is joyous rarity, that will be great addition to the cellar or a special occasion. The Borgogno Dertona DOC comes from the Monleale, [an area of] mostly hillsides around Tortona set on classic clay and limestone soils with good ripening coming from the great southeast and southwest exposures. [The terroir makes] for a more full bodied version, in some ways like the dry rich Alsatian Rieslings, but with a bit more softness and opulence, like Burgundy, especially when allowed to age. This 2018… is very refined and has remarkable clarity with a delicate light pale color and subtle acidity, which is very rounded. Borgogno, also known as “Giacomo Borgogno & Figli” which was founded back in 1761 by Bartolomeo Borgogno, was one of the very first elite Barolo producers and has an amazing track record for great wines, with their Nebbiolo bottlings being some of the most desirable wines in Italy. The Farinetti family acquired this historic winery in 2008, but is firmly committed to quality and the estate’s traditions… The 2015 marked the first vintage of their Timorasso white after the purchase of vineyard sites and the conversion to all organic practices. Borgogno also brought back the use of concrete for fermentations to give an extra element of classic and soulful expression to the wines throughout the range…”

Nine Hats originally began as the second label of the Long Shadows project—its name referring to the personalities who crafted the wines of that famed project. These days, it’s been expanded into one of the best value plays in Washington, with stunning quality for under-$30 (or under $13 by the case here).

“Another strong wine by Nine Hats, the 2014 Merlot is an excellent pairing for a juicy ribeye steak and drinks deliciously straight out of the bottle. This deep hued Merlot smells of sweet red cherries, red raspberry, blackberry pie and suggestions of roasted dates. The palate yields rich flavors of black cherry, mocha, black raspberry cordial, with baking spices and dill accents. Plush and wonderfully balanced, enjoy this over the next decade. (Best 2016-2025) – December, 2016 (OB).”

A VinopolPick Staff Favorite! Ridiculously tasty, with pungent basil-y/herbal-y notes from the Anise Hyssop used to flavor this vermouth-style cider. From one of the finest domestic cideries.
Eden Specialty Ciders Orleans Herbal Cider, Vermont NV 750ML ($29.95) $14 special
Cidery note
“Perfect over ice by itself, or split 50/50 with your favorite sparkling white wine with a squeeze of lime, this bright and perfumed aperitif is defined by the apples and herbs that make it. Basil is a classic culinary herb from the family of Lamiceae, or mint, and originally from the tropical regions of central Africa to Southeast Asia. Sometimes, the leaves so pungent with essential oils, are reminiscent of the sweet smell of anise. In folk medicine, basil is thought to be useful for digestive health and to ease headaches and anxiety. Agastache foeniculum, commonly called Anise Hyssop is also in the mint family. The plant is native to much of north-central and northern America. It is tolerant of deer and drought, and also is a beacon to hummingbirds, butterflies, bumblebees, honeybees, and night flying moths. Anise Hyssop is in the same family as Hyssop, but not closely related. Hyssop hails from the Mediterranean. Anise Hyssop was used medicinally by American Indian tribes for coughs, fever and wounds, as well as digestion. The leaves can be used as a tea or in salad. The purple flower is attractive to honeybees who make a fragrant honey from the nectar. Winner: 2017 GLINTCAP First in Class + Gold.”

“We met fellow ex-pat and wine geek, Brendan Stater-West, where magic happens – in Romain Guiberteau’s cellar in Saint-Just-sur-Dive. Since 2011, Brendan has been working behind the scenes as Romain’s right-hand-man. And in 2015, he completed the first harvest of wine to be bottled under his own label, from the wonderfully unique site of Les Chapaudaises! Brendan’s single hectare of vines comes from the lieu-dit, Les Chapaudaises.  A half-kilometer from the now famous butte of Brézé, on slightly elevated slope, the vineyard soil is completely composed of tuffeau limestone with calcium-rich clay and sand with a plentiful supply of seashell fossils.”

While most reasonably priced Bordeaux is commercial and unremarkable, La Bastienne bucks the trend.  Hands on farming and winemaking make this a wine of place and personality.  It’s no wonder why it remains beloved in France.  The only outstanding question is how long this open secret across the pond will remain under the radar in the United States.

“Very rich blackberry and vibrant fruit aromas in the mulberry and dark-plum spectrum with a concentrated palate that offers a very fleshy and attractive set of supple fruit, framed in ripe, sturdy tannins. Try from 2022.”
Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2016 La Bastienne is medium to deep garnet-purple colored and features fragrant roses, oolong tea and baking spices scents with touches of warm plums, black cherries and raspberry pie. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with expressive red berry and floral layers with a fine-grained frame and long, lively finish.”

The best value in the Palacios lineup. A big step up from the Camins del Priorat and not too far off some of the higher end wines, especially in a great vintage like 2017.
Alvaro Palacios ‘Les Terrasses’ Velles Vinyes, Priorat DOCa 2017 750ML ($44.95) $36 special, 17 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 93 points
“I’ve always had a special interest in this Garnacha and Cariñena blend from Álvaro Palacios, and the current vintage is now the 2017 Les Terrasses Velles Vinyes. It’s produced with grapes from 80 different vineyards in eight villages and therefore is a regional wine. 2017 was a warm and ripe year that produced powerful wines. This 2017 is 55% Garnacha with 44% Cariñena and a 1% pinch of white grapes that fermented in concrete and oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in barrique and oak vat for 11 months. This is the earthiest of the bottlings, and it has some rustic touches from the Cariñena, which gives it its personality. 2017 was their earliest harvest ever (the first time they ever started harvesting in August!). They used a little more new oak, yet the wine is not oaky or excessively ripe. There is no room for sweetness here, and the wine is clean, reflecting very healthy grapes and very elegant tannins, quite transparent, not dry, but rather juicy. Great Terrasses, a triumph over the conditions of the vintage. 126,000 bottles produced.”

Hundred Suns Bednarik Vineyard Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Winery note
“2019 marked a return to the cool temperate conditions that make Oregon ideal for Pinot Noir. Harvested October 1st with modest sugars and intense flavor. The Pommard and Wadensvil were split into 5 unique lots. One amphora and one tank were filled and sealed to rest untouched for twelve days. The remaining fruit was destemmed into small open-top fermenters. With these cooler conditions, red loganberry and Rainier cherry take front stage, accompanied by delicate tannins and bright acid that will carry this wine for years to come. Planted deep in the cool hills near Cherry Grove, this six acre, own-rooted vineyard was planted in 1988 by William Bednarik to Pommard and Wadensvil clones. Our block is situated at 350 feet on a south/southwest exposure, overlying marine sedimentary soil. Native yeast fermentation. Destemmed. Elevage: 10 months in neutral, 5 year, air-dried 228L barrels. Farming practices: dry farmed / Organic.”

Hundred Suns Sequitur Vineyard Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2019 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Winery note
“A cool winter led into a warm spring. Consistent temperatures with low heat spikes and rapid cooling, coupled with plenty of showers in autumn, created the perfect combination for this warm site. Low yields and meticulous farming delivered perfectly ripe fruit bursting with flavor. One fermenter each of destemmed fruit, 50% whole cluster, and a small carbonic lot were blended together this year to yield the classic plum and floral characters that make this vineyard so distinctive. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. This selection came from Mike Etzel’s home vineyard, Sequitur, located at 425 feet elevation on a southeast slope of the Ribbon Ridge AVA. Marine Sedimentary (Willakenzie Series) soils. Clones: Chalone, 943, Pommard. Native yeast fermentation. Elevage: 10 months in neutral, 5 year, air-drived 228L barrels. Farming practices: dry farmed, Organic, Biodynamic.”

Vinopolnote
“This is the final vintage of Shea from Hundred Suns – only 60 cases produced.”
Winery note “Winemaking & Tasting: 2019 was a return to familiar Oregon vintages as we dodged rainstorms to pick in late September. By keeping yields low, full ripeness was achieved. Fruit was divided into two native yeast fermentations: one destemmed and one 33% whole cluster. Floral aromatics mix with pops of refreshing cherry and raspberry, carried by undertones of spice. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Vineyard: In the late 1980s, Dick and Deirdre Shea planted what is now one of Willamette Valley’s most esteemed and iconic vineyards. Our 1 acre block of Dijon Clone 777 sits at 450 feet on a south/southwest exposure. This warm site in Yamhill-Carlton AVA is planted on Marine Sedimentary soil. 40% whole clust. Elevage: 10 months in neutral wood. Farming practices: dry farmed.”

Hundred Suns ‘Old Eight Cut’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($31.95) $29 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Winery note
“The 2019 vintage was a return to a classic, cool Willamette Valley growing season. Dodging rain showers, we harvested our collection of vineyards starting in late September and into mid-October. Tasting Notes: By design, this wine evolves and changes in glass through a broad spectrum of nuanced characteristics. Opening notes of ripe cranberry and cherry give way to complexities of black licorice, black currant, dried sage, and freshly-tilled earth. The succulent fruit wraps around a framework of delicate tannins and mouth-watering acidity. Old Eight Cut: A diamond cut dating back to the 1400s using simple tools and few cuts to enhance the natural brilliance of the stone without disguising its true nature. This cellar selection stitches together pieces from unique sites across the Willamette Valley. Lots are fermented with native yeast & a variety of traditional & experimental techniques to create a layered wine of great complexity, but that is, first and foremost, totally delicious. Winemaking was kept to a bare minimum; fermented with native yeast and 25% whole cluster; aged on the lees for 11 months; gently racked to tank and bottled unfined and unfiltered.”
