Domaine Huet Vouvray Petillant Brut, Loire 2017 750ml $33 special, 12 bottles in stock
Vinous 90 points
“The 2017 Brut Vouvray Ptillant is a lightly sparkling demi-sec style. This is a round and lightly biscuity expression with very fine delicate bubbles but not fully sparkling – the second fermentation uses some residual natural sugar that is retained from the first fermentation. Left on lees for around three years, it develops a light pastry character alongside floral notes and a salty sensation. The mouth-watering acidity combines with an attractive, textural roundness and weight.”

Francois Villard Saint-Joseph Mairlant Rouge, Rhône 2018 750ml $41.90 special, 12 bottles in stock
No reviews for current vintage. Reviews for 2017 vintage provided for reference
Wine Enthusiast 93 points
“Zesty blackberry and cherry flavors are pristine in this medium-bodied Syrah fermented with 55% whole clusters. Aged 18 months in oak, it’s a deeply black-fruited sip accented by fresh acidity and shades of green herb, pepper and olive. Persistent but fine-grained tannins are welcoming while young, but this should drink well through 2030.”

Plouzeau Clos de Maulevrier Touraine ‘Ante Phylloxera’ Franc de Pied, Loire 2016 750ml $119 special, 6 bottles in stock
Importer Note
“This rare cuvée comes from a small vineyard of only 40 ares, populated by vines planted in 1860 and having survived phylloxera. Free of vines, without rootstock, these Cabernet Francs allow a real journey through time. They have been cultivated without chemicals for many years, with great care, all the work in the vineyard being done manually. In the cellar, the berries harvested by hand are transported to vats by gravity, then ferment using only indigenous yeasts. Marc Plouzeau practices delicate extractions, then after pressing, the wine is aged for several months in barrels. These very old vines offer a complex and harmonious cuvée, scented with red fruits enhanced by fine spices and a touch of undergrowth. The palate, greedy and fresh, displays a delicate and slightly suave substance. A great Loire wine, produced at only 1000 bottles per vintage.”

Caladan Cabernet Franc, Napa Valley 2017 750ml $215 special, 12 bottles in stock
Wine Enthusiast 96 points
“A top bottling of the variety, this small-production wine is structured and strong, opening reductively, with elements of tobacco leaf, oak and sage. The savory character persists in the form of leather and black pepper, allowing just a touch of sharp red fruit to enter and complement. This wine has further secrets to be revealed; enjoy best from 2027–2032.”

Bucklin Old Hill Ranch Bambino Zinfandel, Sonoma Valley 2019 750ml $28 special, 24 bottles in stock
Wine Spectator 93 points
“Opens with a fruit-bomb of wild berry briar patch before transitions into an appealingly rustic and structured zest fest, revealing heaps of licorice, roasted sage and forest floor accents that build toward medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2030.”

Bucklin Old Hill Ranch Ancient Field Blend, Sonoma Valley 2020 750ml $39 special, 12 bottles in stock
VinopolNote:
“Looking for a chance to see how epic the 2020 vintage could have been across California? Will Bucklin was spared smoke taint on this wine (confirmed by laboratory tests). 15.3% ABV”
Winery note “12 Acres, 35 grape varieties, 1 wine. Our “Ancient Field Blend” comes from the original vines that were planted on Old Hill Ranch in the 1880’s.  Approximately 65% Zinfandel with the remaining varieties co harvested and fermented together.  Includes Grenache, Alicante Bouschet, Petite Sirah, Grand Noir, Syrah, Carignan, and Mourvedre to name a few.”

Bucklin Old Hill Ranch Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County 2019 750ml $49 special, 12 bottles in stock
Vinopol Note:
Old Hill Ranch planted a block of Cabernet in 1983 on a rootstock known as “AXR”. Fast forward 20 years and the block was infected by phylloxera due to an undiagnosed susceptibility in AXR. This means that the block is in the process of dying, with the resulting wine being every bit of a “Swan song” you’d expect.

The 2015 Luigi Tecce Poliphemo is a gorgeous wine from the ancient winemaking region of Taurasi in the South of Italy. This wine is a well-structured expression Aglianico, a native grape to Taurasi. If you haven’t tasted Aglianico or any wines from the Taurasi region, get ready to expand your palate! This is a great introduction.

Luigi Tecce Poliphemo, Taurasi DOCG 2015 750ml $95 special, 11 bottles in stock
Vinous 95 points
“A spicy mix of crushed black cherries, cloves, mint leaf and smoke form a seductive display as the 2015 Taurasi Riserva Poliphemo Vecchie Vigne slowly blossoms in the glass. It’s silky and pliant upon entry, quickly gaining a more tactile feel, as tart berries laced with sour citrus and minerals saturate the senses. The sheer mass and concentration here is something behold, yet more impressive is how harmonious it remains, as vibrant acidity battles fine tannins for supremacy. The end result is a finale that’s structured yet leaves the mouth watering for more, as violet florals, cocoa and an inner animal muskiness slowly fades. In my opinion, the 2015 vintage has firmly placed Luigi Tecce on the map in Taurasi.”

Californian Zinfandel

Rich, structured, and age worthy! These wines are bold and sure to impress your palate. Here are four Zinfandels from California to be aware of.

Marietta Cellars Angeli Cuvee, Alexander Valley 2019 750ml $34.50 special, 9 bottles in stock
Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2019 Angeli Zinfandel has a medium ruby color and elegant perfume of white peaches, white pepper, tea leaves, licorice and wild berries. The palate balances intense, ultra-perfumed fruit with loads of lift, and it finishes long and full of flavor. This is notable for its stellar price-to-quality ratio.”
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2019 Zinfandel Angeli is an absolutely gorgeous wine. It offers all the aromatic intensity and punchy fruit of Zinfandel in a style that is especially gracious and finessed. Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berry fruit, cedar and mint build effortlessly. The 2019 is such a classy wine.”

Prima Materia Zinfandel, Kelsey Bench NV 750ml $24 special, 6 bottles in stock
Distributor note
“Pietro Buttitta is high up in Lake County at around 1500 feet elevation.  Hovering over the Kelsey Bench AVA he is tending his family’s plot of vines and is doing the work of a true vigneron.  The entire production, around 1500 cases a year, comes entirely from the estate. This is becoming increasingly rare with American wines and allows Pietro to farm in a fastidiously organic fashion and moreover grow exactly what he would like.  And what he grows is why this story is so compelling. (Friulano, Vermantino, Nebbiolo, Sagrantino, Aglianico, Refosco for starters!).”

Ridge Vineyards East Bench Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley 2020 750ml $39 special, 12 bottles in stock
Wine Spectator 88 points
“A sturdy red that’s prickly around the edges, offering notes of blackberry, pepper and licorice that finish with a tannic bite. Tasted twice with similar results. Best after 2022. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.”

Ridge Vineyards Geyserville, Alexander Valley 2020 750ml $49 special, 1 bottle in stock
Wine Spectator 92 points
“Deeply structured and briary, with a mix of red and black fruit accented by licorice, dill and savory underbrush flavors. Finishes with medium-grained tannins. Zinfandel, Carignan, Petite Syrah, Alicante Bouschet and Mataro. Drink now through 2030. 8,900 cases made.
Antonio Galloni 91 points “The 2020 Geyserville is quite soft in this vintage. Bright red-fleshed fruit, crushed flowers, cedar, spice and sweet pipe tobacco all grace this mid-weight edition of Geyserville. All things considered, the 2020 is nicely done.”

Case-12 Les Vignerons de Tautavel Cotes du Roussillon Villages Tautavel Silex 2017 750ml $259 special (that’s only $21.58 special)
Jeb Dunnuck 93-95 points
“The 2017 Cotes Du Roussillon Villages Tautavel Silex might end up matching (or even surpassing) the 2016. The same 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% Carignan brought up in tank, it offers a ripe, medium to full-bodied, straight-up sexy style to go with complex notes of kirsch, black olives, black licorice, and dried garrigue. It’s a powerful yet elegant red that has tons of potential.”
Wine Advocate 93 points “A blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Carignan from old vines, the 2017 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Tautavel Silex is partly aged in barrel and part in tank. It delivers just enough cedar on the nose to let you know there’s barrel influence, without overwhelming the terroir-derived hints of crushed stone or the varietal notes of dark berries. Full-bodied, concentrated and supple, it’s a terrific bottle of Roussillon wine, with a long, elegant finish.”

Proprieta Sperino ‘L Franc Bandit Vino da Tavola, Piedmont 2010 750ml $99 special, 1 bottle in stock
Wine Advocate 96 points
“A Vino da Tavola, the 2010 ‘L Franc is a pure expression of Cabernet Franc made from the acidic, sandy soils of Alto Piemonte. Only 1,000 bottles were produced. This is a stunning red wine with profound depth and vast horizons. The wine’s appearance is incredibly dense and dark but the bouquet is refined and elegant—almost lightweight or ethereal. You get back fruit, exotic spice, powdered mocha, licorice and cured tobacco. The wine carries an evidently important level of dry extract, but it does so with the utmost grace and transparency.”

Vietti Rocche di Castiglione, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml $169 special, 1 bottle in stock
Antonio Galloni 96 points
“The 2017 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione shows all the signatures of this site, all turned up to the maximum. I am not sure I have ever tasted a Vietti Castiglione with this much heft. Super-ripe dark red fruit, rose petal, mocha, dried herbs and menthol all build in an ample, resonant Barolo. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2017 for the next handful of years, perhaps longer. A whole range of floral and savory notes punctuates the explosive finish.”
Jeb Dunnuck 96 points “Aged for 30 months in large oak casks, the 2017 Barolo Rocche Di Castiglione is sourced from old vines planted in 1940, 1950, and 1968 with southeastern exposure. It has a soft perfume of kirsch, fresh rose petal, and fragrant rosemary. The palate is fresh and inviting with fine tannins and noted by anise, pomegranate, and dusty earth. It is pleasurable now or hold 3-5 years and drink 2023-2036.”

Biondi Santi Tenuta Greppo Annata, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2007 750ml $249 special, 1 bottle in stock
James Suckling 95 points
“The nose is full of flowers and berries with dark cherries and ripe strawberries. Hints of flowers too. It’s full-bodied, with wonderful structure with bright acidity. Super clean and beautiful. Very pure and firm. Needs to age for a long time. Classic wine. Try in 2015.”
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous. The estate’s preference for picking on the early side is one of the factors that help balance some of the fleshiness of the vintage. This is an especially silky, supple Brunello from Biondi-Santi. The overt personality of the year comes through, but not at the expense of the house’s style. Floral notes reappear to frame the elegant, expressive finish. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2037.”

France

La Chapelle d’Ausone, Saint-Emilion 2009 750ml $249 special, 1 bottle in stock
James Suckling 96 points
“This is always made with the young vines. Full-bodied, with super velvety tannins and gorgeous mineral, dark berry and spice character. Lovely velvet texture. Amazing quality for a second wine. Best in 2017.”

Louis-Benjamin – Didier Dagueneau Buisson-Renard, Loire 2019 750ml $149 special, 1 bottle in stock
Vinous 92 points
“The Buisson Renard tends to be a more supple, more aromatically restrained cuvée in the Dagueneau stable, and the 2019 is no different. It’s probably the richer clay soils on this section of the domaine. There’s a delicate savory, herbal and oak-derived nutty character. It is fine and fresh with a supple texture that holds the mouth like a gentle embrace.”

Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Les Santenots, Volnay Premier Cru 2015 750ml $89 special, 1 bottle in stock
Vinous 93 points
“The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru shows a lot of reduction on the nose that makes the fruit and terroir difficult to read at the moment. The palate probably indicates the potential more than the aromatics, offering brambly red and black fruit, a sprinkle of white pepper and hints of dried orange peel toward the refined, persistent finish. This certainly requires time in bottle but the potential is here. Patience, please. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.”

Domaine Henri Gouges Les Chaignots, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2018 750ml $95 special, 1 bottle in stock
Vinous 91 points
“The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru is de-stemmed this year. It has a pretty, fragrant bouquet of raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, plus touches of rose petal and iris flower. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins and a fine line of acidity, the 20% new oak nearly integrated. It does feel a little conservative on the finish, but there is certainly elegance here.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-Saint-Denis Tres Girard, Cote de Nuits 2017 750ml $89 special, 1 bottle in stock
Vinous 89-91 points
“The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Très Girard has a refined bouquet of ample red berry fruit, nicely defined and revealing hints of orange blossom. The palate is well balanced with supple tannin, nice focus and a caressing texture toward the finish. Lovely.”

Vilmart & Cie ‘Cuvee Rubis’ Brut Rose, Champagne NV $86.50 special, 1 bottle in stock
Wine Spectator 94 points
“A carnelian-hued rosé that’s rich and expressive, with a well-spiced range of ripe raspberry, yellow peach, elderflower, red licorice and blood orange sorbet set on a fine, chalky mousse. Showing good concentration without weight, this is a vibrant, well-tailored example. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.”

Terroir Al Limit Soc. Lda. Les Manyes, Priorat DOCa 2014 750ml $219 special, 1 bottle in stock
Wine Advocate 98 points
“The 2014 Les Manyes was bottled a little earlier, in June 2016. In many wineries in Priorat, 2013 is clearly better than 2014, but it’s not that clear in the case here, and you have to take it wine by wine. In the case of this Les Manyes, I think 2014 was the big surprise, with a combination of depth, perfume, subtleness and power difficult to achieve. The clay and chalky soils provide for an extraordinary texture of tannins, a lot less coarse than those from slate soils. It distills all the Mediterranean herbs and flowers, the essence of ripe red cherries and wild strawberries with some chalky minerality in a nose and palate that is close to perfection. This is a tour de force Garnacha from… chalky soils in Priorat! There are 1,008 bottles produced.”
Wine & Spirits 97 points “Dominik Huber farms this wine in an unusual place by Priorat standards: It comes from a vineyard at 2,600 feet in altitude-one of the highest in the region-on red clay soil rather than the more celebrated slate. The result is a wine as taut as a high-tension cable, with an acidity so firm and strong that it seems to electrify the wine. Made entirely of garnacha, held in a single 1,200-liter barrel for two years before bottling, it’s rich in red fruit, spice and mineral notes, but above all it is rich in structure. A wine to drink in a decade.”

Mas Martinet ‘Clos Martinet’ Tinto, Priorat DOCa 2017 750ml $89 special, 1 bottle in stock
Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2017s feel relaxed, something unusual in Priorat. The 2017 Clos Martinet has seen a change, as they stopped using the sorting table and stopped using the pied de cuve, because the harvest was very easy. They harvested in August—the earliest ever until 2018—and they didn’t have time to do anything; so, they put the grapes in the vats and let them ferment, and that’s what they have been doing ever since. They feel that there is less manipulation of the grapes now, and that could have helped to make wines more relaxed. This is truly harmonious and expressive, elegant and powerful, not showing any heat—in fact, it’s showing very much freshness.”
Vinous 95 points “Deep, shimmering ruby. Expansive cherry and blue fruit aromas are complemented by suggestions of smoky minerals, incense and candied lavender. Well concentrated and alluringly sweet, offering black raspberry, cherry cola and boysenberry flavors that are sharpened and supported by a spine of juicy acidity. Finishes smoky, seamless and impressively long, with polished tannins adding shape and gentle grip.”

“Light, brilliant orange-pink. Highly perfumed, mineral-accented red berry and pit fruit aromas are complemented by a floral note that builds in the glass. Juicy and sharply focused in the mouth, offering vibrant strawberry, blood orange and white peach flavors and a suave touch of honeysuckle. There is a refreshing touch of greenness on the palate which gives this fresh, lively wine its truly thirst-quenching character.”

Peyrassol Cotes de Provence ‘Chateau Peyrassol’ Rose 2021 750ml $38 special, 36+ bottles in stock
Vinous 92 points
“Translucent orange. White peach, strawberry, mango and a touch of honey on the highly fragrant nose. Offers fleshy red berry and pith fruit flavors, along with hints of lavender, fennel and orange zest. Closes long, smooth and gently spicy, with the peach and floral notes repeating.”
Importer note “50% Cinsault, 25% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 8% Mourvèdre, 4% Tibouren, 3% Rolle and Ugni Blanc. Very pale, lychee pink in color. The nose is fine and elegant. Complex, releasing white fleshed fruit and citrus fruits aromas, along with white floral notes. The palate is straightforward and clean. Fine and silky, it is soft, delicate and lively. The freshness of the finish is balanced with a subtle hint of saltiness.”

Peyrassol Cotes de Provence ‘Le Clos Peyrassol’ Rose 2021 750ml $69 special, 4 bottles in stock
Vinous 94 points
“Vivid onion skin color. A highly perfumed and complex bouquet evokes fresh citrus and pit fruits, strawberry and pungent flowers, along with building mineral and succulent herb elements. Shows excellent clarity and depth to its juicy red fruit, nectarine and mango flavors, which are sweetened by a background of vanilla note. Finishes impressively long and silky, with the mineral and floral note resonating. “
Wine & Spirits 93 points “In 2021, Petrassol credits the micro climate at their estate for the late budbreak that evaded late-April frosts, also escaping a fire (merci, le mistral), a hailstorm in nearby Pignan *blocked by hills) and flooding. More than a vintage survivor, this wine is chewy and immediately pleasurable; it captured our panel’s attention in the sweetness of its fruit. Its substantial weight would work well with a range of dishes, or stand as a meal on its own, letting it saturate your mouth, cherry-blossom accents peeking out around the edges of the finish. Its complexity is subtle but present, like a carefully-measured craft cocktail.”

Large Format Peyrassol

Peyrassol Cotes de Provence ‘Le Clos Peyrassol’ Rose 2019 1.5L $129 special, 9 bottles in stock
Wine Advocate 93 points
“Predominantly Tibouren, with the balance of the blend being Grenache and Rolle, Peyrassol’s super pale 2019 Cotes de Provence Rose Le Clos Peyrassol offers up scents of crushed stone, garrigue, white peach and lime, all tinged with tart red berries. It’s medium-bodied on the palate, with a silky-wet stone feel and a lingering finish that seems to build in red fruit intensity while remaining citrusy and refreshing at the same time. One of the best wines in this year’s tasting, this is a limited-production cuvée from a walled vineyard located on the estate.”

Peyrassol Cotes de Provence ‘Chateau Peyrassol’ Rose 2019 1.5L $79 special, 4 bottles in stock
Wine Advocate 91 points
“A blend of Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, Ugni Blanc and Rolle from estate fruit, Peyrassol’s 2019 Cotes de Provence Rose is a strident, intense rosé that demands attention. It hints at passion fruit at first, then broadens out to include notes of pink grapefruit, red currant and even a touch of peach, but it always retains a sinewy structure and bright acidity. It’s medium-bodied, with a silky texture in the mouth and a long, mouthwatering finish. Yum!”

Peyrassol Cotes de Provence ‘Chateau Peyrassol’ Rose 2018 1.5L $69 special, 7 bottles in stock
Importer note
“This is the elite cuvée of the estate relying as it does on grapes harvested from the oldest vines of the domaine (35 years and older). Principally composed of Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah, the “Chateau” bottling also sees the addition, from time-to-time of Tibouren, the ancient and regal Provencale grape. This Rosé is produced via the “direct press” method and has a long cuvaison designed to produce a wine of character and concentration. Vinified in stainless steel and bottled in late winter – early spring, production is quite limited.”

Peyrassol Cotes de Provence ‘Chateau Peyrassol’ Rose 2017 3L $159 special, 6 bottles in stock
Importer note
“Made entirely from estate fruit in 2017, “Chateau” is primarily Cinsault, with increasingly smaller amounts of Grenache, Mourvedre, Tibouren, and Syrah. This is a higher-toned, more floral, more filigree wine than its brother above, with subtle herbal notes framing clean, lifted fruit on the nose. Though equally as dense—and perhaps more penetrating due to its more overt mineral character—it is no richer than the “Commanderie,” and it expresses the vintage’s firm tension with elegance.”

Screaming Eagle ‘The Flight – Second Flight’, Napa Valley 2019 750ml $1099 special, 5 bottles in stock
James Suckling 99 points
“Extremely floral and aromatic with violets and lavender throughout. Black olives, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, very fine-grained tannins that run the length of the wine. Goes on for minutes. A greenish undertone comes out at the end with some spearmint, green tea and green olive. About two-thirds merlot. Best after 2028, but already stunning.”
Antonio Galloni 97 points “The 2019 The Flight, the estate’s Merlot-based wine, is dark, powerful and brooding in demeanor, almost shockingly so. The natural concentration of a year with low yields and small berries is very much in evidence. A rush of black cherry, plum, graphite, lavender and blue/purplish fruit builds as this virile, explosive wine shows off its arresting beauty. In a word: impressive.”

Harlan Estate, Napa Valley 2017 750ml $1099 special, 3 bottles in stock
Wine Advocate 97+ points
“Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Harlan Estate needs a little coaxing to reveal captivating iron ore, red currant jelly, cloves and crushed rocks scents with a core of warm cassis, Black Forest cake and boysenberries plus a waft of pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm, grainy texture with a lively backbone and loads of earthy layers, long and mineral laced. This should be one of the longer-lived wines coming out of the 2017 vintage.”
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points “The Grand Vin is the 2017 Harlan Estate, and this beauty just about jumps from the glass with its pure cassis and blackcurrant fruits as well as notes of tobacco, graphite, crushed stone, and spice. With a full-bodied, expansive mouthfeel, building, velvety tannins, and a layered, seamless style that offers way more pleasure than just about every other wine in the vintage, bottles can be enjoyed any time over the coming 20-25 years.”

Harlan Estate, Napa Valley 2014 750ml $899 special, 4 bottles in stock
Robert Parker 98 points
“The deep garnet-purple colored 2014 Harlan Estate offers up subtle cassis, black cherries and crushed blackberries notes with tons of savory and earthy layers: forest floor, black soil, charcoal and dried herbs, plus wafts of violets and rare beef. Full-bodied and built like a brick house in the mouth, it has loads of tense, muscular fruit with many layers of earth, savory and spice nuances emerging, finishing with epic length. Around 2,100 cases were bottled.”

Harlan Estate, Napa Valley 2009 1.5L $2099 special, 1 bottle in stock
Antonio Galloni
“The 2009 Harlan Estate is just as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel. Cloves, dark plums, cherries, smoke and graphite add richness and resonance to this powerful, incisive wine. Juicy and exuberant, the 2009 has always had a certain raciness that is impossible to resist. Layers of fruit continue to build to the enveloping, sensual finish.
