Landonne Landed
6 bottles Here Now
C’est Magnifique

E. Guigal Cote Rotie La Landonne, Rhone 2009 750ML ($599.95) $499 special (was $533)
Robert Parker 100 points “The 2009 Cote Rotie La Landonne is a killer wine. An extravagant bouquet of black truffles, roasted meats, licorice, ground pepper, blackberries, scorched earth and camphor soars from this muscular, dense, over-the-top, serious, masculine La Landonne. Built like Arnold Schwarzenegger was two decades ago, this enormously concentrated bodybuilder of a wine should hit its prime in a decade, and last 40-50 years. This is no trivial boast as the debut vintage of La Landonne, the 1978, is just reaching full maturity at age 34.” RP

Also newly arrived, two best-priced Chateauneufs from Janasse:

Domaine de La Janasse Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Chaupin 2011 750ML ($89.95) $51.90 special, 18 bottles available
Wine Advocate 95 points “Coming from a cooler, sandy terroir in the northeastern part of the appellation, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin (which comes 80% from the Chaupoin lieu-dit and 20% from the La Janasse lieu-dit, hence the subtle name change) is 100% Grenache, from vines planted in 1912, that’s aged two-thirds in foudre and one-third in demi-muid. Gorgeous all around, with plenty of similarities to the traditional cuvee, yet slightly richer and fuller, it delivers beautiful mulled red and black fruits, licorice, spice and tinges of stony minerality on the nose. Full-bodied, supple, seamless and elegant, with fine tannin, it makes the most of a difficult vintage and is certainly one of the top 10-12 wines. Drink now-2023.”

The average price is $77

Domaine de La Janasse Cuvee Vieilles Vignes, Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2011 750ML ($119.95) $63.60 special, 30 bottles available
Wine Advocate 96 points “And a candidate for the wine of the vintage, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is always a rough blend of 85% Grenache and the balance Syrah, Mourvedre, Clairette and other permitted varieties, that has the Grenache aged all in foudre and the Syrah and Mourvedre aged in one-third new barrels (that’s less than 6% of the blend in new barrels). Exhibiting gorgeous black fruits, spice-box, toast, licorice and roasted meat-like qualities on the nose, it is full-bodied, concentrated and layered on the palate, with loads of texture, yet delivers no weight, heat, or ever puts a foot wrong. Shockingly good in the vintage, it should not be missed. Hats off to Christophe and Isabelle. Drink now-2027.”

Pick any mix of 12+ Beaujolais wines and receive a 10% discount

We offer 30 different Beaujolais wines in stock here now.  Including these 6 already highly discounted wines:

Philippe Pacalet Moulin A Vent 2014 750ML ($59.95) $49 special (that’s $46.55 with 5% off or $44.10 with 10% off!), 31 bottles available
Philippe Pacalet Moulin A Vent 2014 1.5L ($119.95) $99 special (that’s $95.04 with 5% off or $89.10 with 10% off!), 1 magnum available
Staff Pick: “Never patient when it comes to Beaujolais, I drank Pacalet’s intrepid Moulin-a-Vent the very night it arrived at our shop. A simple salmon dish served as accompaniment, and I poured some out into a decanter in order to contrast normal and accelerated evolution of the wine as it aerated. Cherry aromas soared out of the glass, with an immediate flavor profile of goji berries, plum, Bing cherries, and a touch of leather. The fruit bears this intriguing crunchiness, with the acid mingling but never overarching beyond the wine’s overall feel. There is a playful energy this Beaujolais, which went lovely with the salmon and danced between being a little showy and a bit mellow over the course of four hours. I had fun drinking it, trying not to take it or myself too serious in the process. This cuvee, Pacalet’s first effort within Moulin-a-Vent, will evolve quite nicely; I’m eager to revisit in a few months’ time. As goes with many of my recommendations, though, don’t feel bad if you drink sooner rather than later.” – Tyler

Coudert Pere ‘Clos de la Roilette’ Fleurie Griffe du Marquis 2013 750ML ($37.95) $31.90 special (that’s $30.31 with 5% off or $28.71 with 10% off!), 17 bottles available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 93 points “Deep ruby. A heady blackberry liqueur- and potpourri-scented bouquet is complemented by suggestions of smoky Indian spices and candied flowers. Finely etched dark fruit and floral pastille flavors show excellent depth, with a spicy note of white pepper emerging with air and adding bite. Emphatically fruity and concentrated Fleurie with firm structure and mineral cut on the long, sappy, youthfully tannic finish. I was reminded more than a little of the northern Rhône by this compelling wine. This particular plot was planted in 1930, Alain Coudert told me.” JR

Jean-Paul Thevenet Morgon Vieilles Vignes 2014 750ML ($34.95) $28 special (that’s $26.60 with 5% off or $25.20 with 10% off!), 36 bottles available

Pierre-Marie Chermette Domaine du Vissoux Cuvee Traditionnelle Vieilles Vignes 2014 750ML ($17.95) $17 special (that’s $16.15 with 5% off or $15.30 with 10% off!), 29 bottles available
Wine Advocate 88 points “The estate’s young vine cuvee and all from 20 to 40-year-old Gamay vines, the 2014 Beaujolais Pierre Chermette offers lots of smoked earth and dried underbrush notes to go with a darker slanted black cherry and earthy, blackberry fruit profile. Medium-bodied on the palate with lively acidity, yet also good ripeness, it’s a forward, delicious red meant for near term consumption.” JD

Georges Duboeuf Jean Claude Debeaune Morgon Belles Grives, Beaujolais 2014 750ML ($17.95) Was $14, Now $11.90 (that’s $11.31 with 5% off or $10.71 with 10% off!), 36+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2014 Morgon Belles Grives has a more taciturn nose compared to Duboeuf’s other 2014 Morgons, so be patient with it, since it reveals traces of blackcurrant and kirsch with time, all nicely defined but constantly demanding coaxing from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well-balanced and focused, with cracked black pepper enlivening the structured finish. Don’t be afraid to give this a little decanting before pouring.” NM

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Georges Duboeuf Domaine des Rosiers Moulin-a-Vent, Beaujolais 2014 750ML ($21.95) Was $18, Now $14 (that’s $13.30 with 5% off or $12.60 with 10% off!), 36+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 89-91 points “The 2014 Moulin-à-Vent Domaine des Rosiers, which sees a judicious 15% oak barrel aging, has a precocious and lively bouquet of maraschino cherry, cola and mineral scents that are nicely defined and feminine. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fine acidity and harmony with a mineral-driven finish that leaves the mouth tingling. This is just lovely.” NM

All That Glitters… Could be Rhinestones

What do Gramercy Tavern in NYC, Le Pigeon in PDX. and Frances in SF have in common? Well, great food, a long waiting list for reservations, and, RHINESTONES- poured by the glass. Yes, Bow & Arrow Rhinestones, a wine that has impressed us from the outset, but never more so than with the currently available 2014 vintage. Rhinestones- scintillating and cheap; no wine is more aptly named…….

Bow & Arrow Rhinestone Red, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special
Vinopolnote: A clean, bright, and beautifully perfumed blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay sourced from the valley and vinified right here in Portland!

Bedrock Wine Co. ‘The Bedrock Heritage’ Wine, Sonoma Valley 2013 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 special
Antonio Galloni 94+ points “The 2013 Bedrock Heritage Wine is one of the most intriguing wines in the range. Smoke, cedar, tobacco and a host of savory notes meld together in a powerful yet nuanced wines built on delineation and energy. Even with all of its intensity, the 2013 remains lifted, floral and light on its feet for such a big wine. This is by far the most polished and refined wine I have tasted from the Bedrock Vineyard, where the wines have often been much riper and bigger.” AG

Joseph Carr Wines

Praised by New York Times wine writer Eric Asimov as producing “wines of balance and restraint,” Joseph Carr Wines provide exceptional value.  Joseph Carr founded his wine company in 2005 after 10 years of experience as a sommelier and 10 years as a wine industry executive.  He strove to create wines of balance, sophistication and approachability, with a distinctive Californian character.  He sourced grapes from some of the state’s top AVAs: Rutherford, Oakville and Stags Leap District.  In 2010, Aaron Pott became the winemaker at Joseph Carr Wines.  Pott has worked at such prestigious estates as Newton Vineyard (under John Kongsgaard), Chateau Troplong-Mondot and Chateau La Tour Figeac and was recognized as a Winemaker of the Year by Food & Wine magazine.  Pott believes in producing wines of balance with minimal intervention.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa County is sourced from hillside vineyards with thin, poor soils that produce smaller berries with more intense flavors. The yields are kept low.  Wines produced from these mountainside vineyards tend to be characterized by deep inky colors and strong berry aromas.  The Cabernet also shows savory, peppery and smoky notes.

Joseph Carr Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($21.95) $18 special, 36+ bottles available
Case-12 Joseph Carr Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($249.95) $179 special, 4 cases available (that’s only $14.92/bottle)
Wine Enthusiast “This full-bodied, concentrated wine is dry, quite firm and tannic in texture. It smells rich and a bit earthy, and tastes like blackberries, cranberries and beef. The style will accompany rich, meaty food very well.”
Winery note: “Toffee, cherry, mint, fig, violets and chocolate in the nose, medium bodied attack with raspberry, cherry and roasted meats finishes with great length with roasted meats, chocolate and candied violets.”

Chianti Focus:
Castello di Ama and Castell’in Villa

Castello di Ama:
Ama is a modern estate comprising 500 acres of land, 200 of which are vineyards. These vineyards are divided into five important parcels; San Lorenzo, Bellavista, La Casuccia, Bertinga and Montebuoni. In the 1970s, four families formed a partnership and purchased the property with the goal of producing world-class wines. Castello Di Ama is unique, employing its best Sangiovese to produce Chianti Classico, unlike many Tuscan producers who have chosen to blend their best Sangiovese into Vini da Tavola or Super Tuscans. The San Lorenzo is one of three Gran Selezione Chianti Classico wines from Castello di Ama.  Gran Selezione is a new classification for Chianti Classico, representing the very pinnacle of wine production from the region.

Castello di Ama ‘San Lorenzo’, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2011 750ML ($57.95) $41.90 special, 28 bottles available
Case-12 Castello di Ama ‘San Lorenzo’, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2011 750ML ($549.95) $432 special, 12 cases available (that’s only $36/bottle!)
Case-6 Castello di Ama ‘San Lorenzo’, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2011 750ML ($259.95) $233 special, 3 six-packs available (that’s only $38.83/bottle!)
James Suckling 96 points “This has a dusty character on the nose with soil, dried fruit and blueberry. Flowers too. Full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Tight and structured. Shows wonderful depth of fruit and beauty. Chewy. Better in 2016.” JS

Castello di Ama Haiku Toscana IGT 2010 750ML ($69.95) $49 special, 14 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 93 points “Beautifully vivid and nuanced in the glass, the 2010 Haiku impresses for its purity and clarity. Sweet tobacco, licorice, mint, cedar and dark red stone fruits are all woven together in a fabric of sensual elegance and total finesse. The 2010 is gorgeous today, but my sense is it also has enough pedigree to develop nicely in bottle. The style is built on grace and finesse.” AG

Castell’in Villa:
Nestled on the Castelnuovo Barardenga hill in the southern-most part of the Chianti Classico zone is the estate of Castell’in Villa, a historic hamlet dating to the 13th century. Princess Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessa and her husband purchased the estate in 1968. Less than a decade later, she found herself the sole owner when her husband passed away, and she dedicated herself to renovating the estate and expanded the vineyard plantings. The wines are produced from handpicked estate grapes from vines planted among the olive groves and forest. They are aged in French oak barrels and held back for two additional years to ensure greater maturity upon release.  Using clonal selections from estate’s vineyards, she planted the Poggio delle Rose vineyard, the estate’s top site. The soil is composed of the alluvial sand and pebbly soil seen throughout the estate with the addition of clay and limestone.  The wines show elegance and balance with a classic nose of dried fruits, minerals and flowers.

New Arrival from Castell’in Villa:
Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico DOCG 2011 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special
Winery note “The Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico is composed of 100% Sangiovese grapes. It is a complex and serious blend of our different vineyards. The wine is aged in traditional Chianti Classico casks for about 12 months. The Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico captures the fruit of the Sangiovese grapes and the earthy, spicy and slightly wild traces of the soil in a beautiful blend. It is an unusually concentrated Chianti Classico, that will invariably benefit from age.”

Also Available Here Now:
Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico DOCG 2010 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special, final 2 bottles available
Ian D’Agata–Vinous 91 points “Bright red. Flinty red cherry and smoky underbrush on the refined nose. Classically dry and firm, this midweight Chianti delivers plenty of pure sangiovese flavor (licorice, flint, red cherry) and seems slightly more accessible to me than past versions of this wine, which usually started out life tough as nails but evolved beautifully and showed rare ageworthiness. Chianti Classico does not get any better or any more traditional than this.” ID

Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2006 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 17 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva hits all the high notes. Ripe and structured, yet also wonderfully contained, the 2006 boasts stunning depth, power and richness. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2006 is also likely to require a considerable amount of time to come around. All the elements are in the right place for the 2006 Riserva to develop into a splendid wine. The mid-weight, firm style is classic Castell’in Villa.” AG

Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 11 bottles available
Ian D’Agata—Vinous 92+ points “Good bright red. Nose began closed and brooding, but showed vibrant notes of redcurrant, mint and dried flowers with aeration, complicated by a strong mineral quality. Sweet and nicely lush in the mouth, with suave flavors of redcurrant, herbs and tobacco joined on the back end by a very strong element of gunflint. The long finish features a firm acid spine and youthfully chewy but noble tannins.” ID

Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2009 750ML ($59.95) $39 special (was $47), 18 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 92 points “Rich, enveloping and beautifully layered, the 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva is a rare Riserva that will drink nicely with minimal cellaring. Sweet tobacco, licorice, leather, cedar and underbrush meld together as this radiant, supple Riserva opens up in the glass. More classic elements of structure emerge on the finish.” AG

Castell’in Villa ‘Poggio delle Rose’, Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2009 750ML ($79.95) $59 special (was $69), 24 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 93+ points “Castell’in Villa’s 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva Poggio delle Rose captures the generosity of the vintage while retaining a gorgeous sense of freshness and energy. Red stone fruit, tobacco, menthol, sage and leather nuances are bright and nicely focused, but with the additional breadth provided by the warm vintage. A long, silky finish rounds things out in style.” AG

Peter Lauer, Donnhoff and Wine Advocate

Quick!  Name a 94 point German wine for under $20….

Final Few Cases….

Peter Lauer ‘Barrel X’ Saar Riesling, Mosel 2014 750ML ($21.95) $18 special
Stephan Reinhardt – Wine Advocate 94 points “Made not exclusively from their own vineyards the 9% alcohol (plus 20 or 22 grams residual sugar) 2014 Alt Scheidt Riesling (or Barrel X in the US) is an untamed flavored Saar Riesling with a lovely slate aroma and a very sappy and piquant taste. It is lovely juicy and sweet, but also very elegant, and a nothing but lovely type of Kabinett, although Floran Lauer does not want to name it like this because predicates are used only for sweet wines.”

Can’t get enough of German Riesling?  Neither can we.
Check out these new reviews for Donnhoff courtesy of Stephan Reinhardt of the Wine Advocate.

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel, Nahe 2014 750ML ($119.95) $79 special, 1 bottle available
Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel, Nahe 2014 375ML ($59.95) $49 special, 6 half-bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt – Wine Advocate 94+ points “The 2014 Riesling Auslese Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle GK has been selected from all over the Hermannshöhle vineyard and offers a very fine, subtle botrytis bouquet intermixed with pure and flinty stone aromas. This gold-capsuled Auslese is sweet and fruity, highly elegant and with great finesse; it has a piquant acidity and ripe pineapples aromas, but also reduced botrytis flavors. This is a very delicate and elegant Riesling with a lovely, clear and lean, mineral character. Great finesse and delicacy here.”

The 750ML is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Weingut Donnhoff Norheimer Dellchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2014 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 22 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt – Wine Advocate 95 points “Coolish, very clear, subtle but multi-layered on the highly elegant, finesse-full and flinty nose starts the 2014 Riesling Dellchen GG. This is a full-bodied, pure, very elegant, highly complex and frisky Riesling of great finesse and lots of salt. The wine is bone dry, but so intense, pure and mineral… so fine and so intense. This is probably the finest Dellchen I have tasted. Extraordinary! “We have picked the Dellchen earlier than we used to do in former years, when we tended to wait and to wait…” says Helmut Dönnhoff. “In 2014, botrytis forced us to pick earlier and now we are very happy with the result because we aim for clarity and precision.”

Weingut Donnhoff ‘Felsenturmchen’ Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2014 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 21 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt – Wine Advocate 94 points “Deep, very clear and stony/smoky on the coolish and aristocratic nose opens the 2014 Riesling Felsenberg GG ‘Felsentürmchen’. Medium to full-bodied, very mineral and highly elegant on the palate, with ripe and well balanced fruit, and a long and salty finish, this is a great and quite flowing Felsenberg from the volcanic Felsentürmchen plot straight under the restored tower.”

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2014 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 22 bottles available
Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Nahe 2014 1.5L ($179.95) $149 special, 1 magnum available
Stephan Reinhardt – Wine Advocate 96 points “Dönnhoff’s iconic 2014 Riesling Hermannshöhle GG opens with a beautifully clear, coolish and smoky/fumy bouquet of great purity, precision and aromatic complexity. Think of intermingling lemon and slate aromas. The attack on the palate is racy and clear, and the wine starts straightly dancing over the palate. This is concentrated, perfectly ripe Riesling on the knife’s edge; it’s nicely piquant, highly mineral and endlessly salty. There are notes of melting stones and mineral, with great tension. “The vines are older in the Hermannshöhle, one plot is as old as I am,” says Dönnhoff, who was born in 1949.”

Donnhoff Grosses Gewachs 6-Pack 2014 750ML ($419.95) $379 special, 3 six-packs available
Includes two bottles each of the Grosses Gewachs bottlings from 2014: Dellchen (Wine Advocate 95 points), Felsenberg (Wine Advocate 94 points), and Hermannshohle (Wine Advocate 96 points)

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett, Nahe 2014 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 36+ bottles available
Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett, Nahe 2014 1.5L ($79.95) $69 special, 2 magnums available
Stephan Reinhardt – Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2014 Riesling Kabinett Oberhäuser Leistenberg is cool, fresh and just ripe on the pure and elegant nose. Gentle and smooth, but also piquant and salty on the palate, this is a light and fruity, well balanced Kabinett with ripe acidity and a pure and salty, very stimulating finish. In a few words: round and juicy, but extremely stimulating and light. As father Hermann Dönnhoff once said, “The Leistenberg is not the wine with the highest must weight, but it’s always our finest wine.”

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spatlese, Nahe 2014 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 23 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt – Wine Advocate 95 points “In 2014 the Dönnhoffs bottled two different Spätlese Rieslings from their family cru Hermannshöhle. The regular 2014 Riesling Spätlese Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle shows a clear and aristocratic bouquet of great finesse. On the palate, this wine is so deliciously ripe, piquant, fine and elegant that it is almost mind-blowing. This is great and extremely cool, precise, finesse-full, frisky, filigreed and light-hearted, though still a serious Spätlese with a stimulatingly piquant finish. A great Spätlese — one of the finest I had in 2015.”

Weingut Donnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spatlese, Nahe 2014 750ML ($44.95) $33 special, 12 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt – Wine Advocate 91 points “The 2014 Riesling Spätlese Norheimer Kirschheck is pure and salty on the nose, which displays sweet cherry and very fine botrytis aromas. It’s just a perfect combination of slate and fine Riesling flavors. Dönnhoff estimates the botrytis part around 30%. Round and sweet on the plate, very juicy and sensual, but with a piquant and salty finish, this is a lovely, stimulating Spätlese with some super ripe banana flavors. The finish is fine, salty and really stimulating.

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese, Nahe 2014 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 17 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt – Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2014 Riesling Spätlese Oberhäuser Brücke–from Dönnhoff’s famous Eiswein, Auslese and Spätlese vineyard–opens very fine, pure and coolish on the slate-like/flinty nose. Piquant, sweet and juicy on the palate, this is a highly elegant and minerally structured Spätlese with a perfectly ripe acidity. It’s always the latest vineyard that has been picked. If there is a vineyard in Dönnhoff’s portfolio that is similar to the Saar, it is the Brücke, and especially the 2014 vintage. It’s just great.”

Weingut Donnhoff Roxheimer Hollenpfad Riesling Trocken, Nahe 2014 750ML ($47.95) $36 special, 12 bottles available
Weingut Donnhoff Roxheimer Hollenpfad Riesling Trocken, Nahe 2014 1.5L ($119.95) $89 special, 2 magnums available
Stephan Reinhardt – Wine Advocate 91 points “From red sandstone soils, the 2014 Riesling trocken Höllenpfad offers a lovely, clear and refined aromatic bouquet that intermingles Riesling and lemon flavors with the purity and flintiness of the sandstone terroir that delivers only small-sized, botrytis-free berries. Silky and round on the palate, this medium to full-bodied and crystalline Riesling reveals a stunning depth, elegance, power and intensity in the finish, which must be the result of 45-year-old vines.”

Explore Italy: Foradori

Elisabetta Foradori’s vines neatly line the base of the Dolemite Mountains, imposing and beautiful in equal parts. She took particular interest in the Teroldego grape which is native to her home region of Trentino. Elisabetta’s handling of Teroldego results in a more delicate, layered wine whose impressiveness lies more in subtleties than brawn.  Across the board, the wines are marked by great cohesion, terroir, and complexity.

Take the ‘Morei’ bottling, for example. The vineyard from which she sources these grapes is composed of sandy soils from a former riverbed, often pink-tinged from high concentrations of iron. This Teroldego macerates for eight months in amphorae, oblong clay vessels who allow for less aggressive élevage – an ideal choice for a low-intervention winemaker such as Foradori. It then ages for three months in oak casks before being bottled. The resulting wine is seductively aromatic and wild; savory notes intersect with minerals, herbs, and spice. The finish continues onward, fills the mouth, and lingers.

These reds present a unique taste of northeastern Italy – of wines made with great consideration, deserving to be shared with anyone who has an open mind.

Newly Released Foradori wines arriving late March:

Foradori Granato Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT, Trentino-Alto Adige 2011 750ML ($59.95) $51.90 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “Pomegranate, wild cherries, flowers, mint, leather and sweet spices abound in the 2011 Granato. Sexy and radiant to the core, the Granato is especially seamless in this vintage, with voluptuous fruit, silky tannins and exceptional overall balance. I imagine the 2011 will provide consumers with a wide window of drinking pleasure. Today, the fruit is naturally quite primary, so readers who prefer more shades of nuance will want to cellar the 2011 for at least a few years.”AG

Foradori wines available here now:

Foradori Morei Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT, Trentino-Alto Adige 2011 1.5L ($119.95) $99 special, 1 magnum available
Antonio Galloni 94 points “It’s fascinating to taste the 2011 Teroldego Morei next to the Sgarzon. Here the flavors are more intensely savory and mineral-driven. This parcel is planted on an old river bed rich in rocks and sand, a terroir that gives the wine much of its distinct personality. The Morei shows a bit less opulence than the Sgarzon, but also more length and tension. Pomegranate, plum, sage, smoke, violets and graphite add nuance on the brilliant finish.”AG

Foradori Morei Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT, Trentino-Alto Adige 2012 1.5L ($119.95) $99 special, 2 magnums available
Antonio Galloni 94 points “Foradori’s Teroldego Morei is once again compelling in 2012. A host of intensely savory/mineral notes meld into a core of dense dark red and black stone fruits. Grilled herbs, lavender and smoke follow, adding considerable aromatic intrigue. Big tannins support the huge, explosive finish in a wine endowed with magnificent complexity and pedigree. The dark, brooding finish is particularly of note. Today, the 2012 stands out for its superb complexity and undeniable pedigree. The Morei was vinified and aged in upright terra cotta amphorae.”AG

Foradori Vigneto Sgarzon Teroldego Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT, Trentino-Alto Adige 2012 1.5L ($119.95) $89 special, 1 magnum available
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2012 Teroldego Sgarzon wraps around the palate with the essence of dark raspberries, smoke, licorice, iron, mint, rose petals and sweet spices. A wine of pure polish and voluptuousness, the 2012 will drink beautifully pretty much right out of the gate. Radiant, supple and forward in its expression of fruit, yet with plenty of underlying structure, the Sgarzon stands out from the more virile, imposing Morei. Both wines are striking, though. The Sgarzon was vinified and aged in upright terra cotta amphorae.”AG

Explore Italy: Terre Nere

The wines made on Mount Edna are unlike those made on Sicily, in Italy, or anywhere else in the world. Native varietals Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio make for an extraordinary blend: high acidities, lots of spice, immensely layered and complex, surprisingly not too full-bodied… Though the two grapes’ roots can be traced back partially to Sangiovese, they are truly unique.

Marco de Grazia came to the volcano’s northern slopes in 2002 and conceived Terre Nere, a domain which has grown to become one of Etna’s most beloved wineries.  Fiercely dedicated to the terroir of Etna and preserving old rootstocks – some dating back 130+ years! – de Grazia owns vines across ten parcels spread across thirty hectares. 80% of the estate’s vines are 50-100 years, along with the aforementioned pre-phylloxera vines.  The wines of Terre Nere are an astonishing value considering their quality.  We’re proud to offer a wide array of their bottlings – including some new releases – all viewable below.

Terre Nere Wines – Just Arrived Yesterday:

Tenuta delle Terre Nere ‘Le Vigne Niche’ Bianco Etna, Sicily 2013 750ML ($39.95) $33 special
Wine Advocate 92 points “I was delighted by the 2013 Etna Bianco Cuvèe delle Vigne Niche because it shows a broader style that I did not expect. This is a pure expression of Carricante from vines that are up to 60 years old in age. It sees brief oak contact. You get a pure sense of mineral dryness at first, but that layer lifts gracefully to expose orange peel, dried jasmine and exotic fruit at the back. This Etna white delivers a firm style with muscle and density. It should evolve nicely over the next five years.”
Ian D’agata–Vinous 91 points “Deep straw-gold. Yellow flowers, minerals, fennel and a smoky note on the nose. Densely packed, bright and juicy, offering rich orchard fruit and botanical herb flavors. Finishes vibrant, complex and long. This was fermented in oak and aged for about nine months in 20-hectoliter barrels.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Rosso Etna, Sicily 2014 750ML ($24.95) $19 special
Wine Spectator 90 points “A perfumed, light- to medium-bodied red, with crushed raspberry, mineral and spice flavors. Light tannins show on the supple finish. Elegant and very drinkable. Drink now through 2021.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Guardiola Rosso Etna, Sicily 2013 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Ian D’agata–Vinous 93 points “Bright red. Captivating nose combines red cherry, faded red rose, violet and tar; I know everyone speaks of Etna in terms of Burgundy, but this reminds me a lot more of a great Nebbiolo! Then pure and penetrating on the palate, with rich red cherry and raspberry flavors complicated by minerals and tar. Complex and long on the fine-grained finish. This outstanding wine possesses a measure of depth and complexity that the other crus in 2013, as wonderful as they are, don’t have.”
Wine Advocate 93-95 points “My mind wanders to the immense beauty of this stunning vineyard site when I taste the 2013 Etna Rosso Guardiola. Throughout my many years covering Italian wine, this is one of the most beautiful sites I have ever had the honor to visit. That otherworldly beauty – with volcanic stone walls, knotted pre-phelloxera vines, cherry trees and wild flowers with little shrines to the Madonna peeping through the vines – is forever etched in my memory. Guardiola is among my favorite Etna Contrade. This is a shapely and sophisticated expression with dark fruit tones of cassis and blackcurrant backed by crushed mineral and dried flowers. The tannins are firm and drying. This vintage far exceeds my expectations.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Prephylloxera La Vigna di Don Peppino Rosso Etna, Sicily 2013 750ML ($99.95) $79 special
Ian D’agata–Vinous 93 points “Vibrant red. Very Nebbiolo aromas of red cherry and red rose are complicated by Pinot-Noir like flint and darker fruits. Dense and large-scaled but juicy too, offering bright, pure flavors of red berries and cherry supported by silky tannins. The finishes is pure, suave and very long, with mineral and floral reminders. I find this to combine the best traits of the Guardiola and Calderara wines, which is not that surprising as the grapes used to make it come from the Calderara Sottana and Santo Spirito vineyards (the latter is located right beneath Guardiola, so I wasn’t too far off the mark). Great stuff.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Calderara Sottana Rosso Etna, Sicily 2013 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Case-6 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Calderara Sottana Rosso Etna, Sicily 2013 750ML ($249.95) $219 special (that’s only $36.50/bottle!)
Ian D’agata–Vinous 92 points “Dark red. Strong stony minerality currently overshadows aromas of red cherry and raspberry. Penetrating and vibrant on the palate, with red berry and mineral flavors displaying noteworthy purity and complexity. Lingers long on the youthfully chewy finish, which features a bright mineral overlay and a violet topnote. This cru is located at roughly the same altitude as Feudo di Mezzo but the soil is extremely gravelly. It’s almost always the most Burgundian of Terre Nere’s many crus and it’s no different this year. Only about 800 meter walk away from the Feudo di Mezzo Quadro delle Rose vineyard, but the wines are a world apart.”
Wine Advocate 91-93 points “The 2013 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana shows a different personality compared to Tenuta delle Terre Nere’s other single-vineyard expressions. Calderara Sottana offers more balsamic definition with wild fennel, rosemary spring, dark fruit and scorched earth. To my palate, it is the most ethereal of the bunch and the hardest to pin down given that the aromas are in constant evolution and flux. Pretty fruit and berry tones fill in the back. Despite the enormous definition presented on the bouquet, the wine is more immediate and direct in the mouth. Bright berry is followed by ash, smoke and dusty tannins. This vintage feels less complex overall but it should age nicely. ”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere ‘Feudo di Mezzo’ Etna Rosso, Sicily 2013 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Case-6 Tenuta delle Terre Nere ‘Feudo di Mezzo’ Etna Rosso, Sicily 2013 750ML ($249.95) $219 special (that’s only $36.50/bottle!)
Ian D’agata–Vinous 91 points “Vivid red. Earth tones and licorice on the nose. Then fruitier and large-scaled in the mouth, offering ripe red fruit and botanical herb flavors that carry through a long, vibrant, chewy finish. The polished tannins provide lovely backbone to the rich red fruit flavors. This is always the first cru to be harvested, roughly two weeks ahead of Guardiola, which is located about 350 meters higher.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Santo Spirito Rosso Etna, Sicily 2013 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Wine Advocate 92-94 points “The 2013 Etna Rosso Santo Spirito is an abundant and enriched expression from the darkened volcanic slopes of Mt. Etna Santo Spirito runs through parts of Passopisciaro at the heart of Etna’s best production zones. This gorgeous wine opens to a dark garnet appearance with inkier colors of crimson and ruby. Crisp and crunchy tones of wild berry, cranberry, red rose and dark mineral characterize the mouthfeel. This was a difficult vintage that saw slow and uneven ripening for many producers. Marco De Grazia has evidently mastered when to harvest his fruit at optimal ripeness.”

Terre Nere Wines Also Available Here Now:

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Calderara Sottana Rosso Etna, Sicily 2011 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 2 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer & Wine Spectator 90 points “(14.5% alcohol):  Bright red.  Pungent red berry, flint and floral aromas on the perfumed nose.  Then much sweeter and richer on the palate, with smooth red cherry and spice (cardamom, cinnamon, white pepper) flavors.  Full and long, with a strong mineral quality.” ST

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Calderara Sottana Rosso Etna, Sicily 2012 750ML ($47.95) $39 special, 4 bottles available
Importer note “The ‘Calderara Sottana,’ made from the indigenous Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, is unbelievably fresh and complex, with a wonderfully pronounced nose.  Robert Parker calls it “a terrific, elegant, savory, fresh, perfumed wine offering notes of sweet smoked herbs intermingled with cherries, earth and a hint of truffles.”  It is delightfully balanced and layered, and is without a doubt ready to drink.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere ‘Feudo di Mezzo’ Etna Rosso, Sicily 2006 750ML ($79.95) $66 special, 1 bottle available
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2006 Feudo di Mezzo is incredibly elegant and silky as it caresses the palate in stunning style. Nothing in particular stands out in this dense, full-bodied red, yet the wine’s overall poise and harmony is breathtaking. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere ‘Feudo di Mezzo’ Etna Rosso, Sicily 2012 750ML ($47.95) $41.90 special, 13 bottles available
James Suckling 94 points “I love the dried-strawberry, chocolate, nut and plum character to this. Full body, dusty tannins and a juicy, fresh finish. Excellent acidity, too. Better in 2016.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Guardiola Rosso Etna, Sicily 2012 750ML ($47.95) $39 special, 4 bottles available
Wine Spectator 91 points “A firm and chewy version, offering sappy cherry and berry fruit that shows stylish accents of cocoa powder and oak spice, with a subtle vein of smoky mineral. Fresh and mouthwatering, with a grippy, spicy finish. Best from 2016 through 2024.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Santo Spirito Rosso Etna, Sicily 2012 750ML ($47.95) $39 special, 17 bottles available
Wine Spectator 90 points “Though medium-bodied and elegant overall, there’s a density to this spicy red. Sinewy tannins wrap around a juicy core of crushed black raspberry and rich loamy earth flavors, accented by hints of bergamot and mocha. Drink now through 2022”

New Reviews from Grapelive

Arianna Occhipinti, Il Frappato, IGT Terre Siciliane 2013 750ML ($41.95) $34.50 special
Grapelive 94 points “The beautiful and charming Occhipinti 2013 Frappato is everything you’d expect of this natural wine superstar with its earthy/fruity interchange and subtle complexity. Arianna’s sincerely reflect her passion of place, these are serious and focused real terroir wines, in 2013 and 2014 vintages she has really crafted some compelling wines from the area of Vittoria in south Sicily. The latest Frappato shows a slightly darker profile with an almost ruby/garnet hue in the glass and the palate feels a bit more gripping, though it is still alive and vibrant with bright flavors and with its usual tangy sweet and savory balance, this is a vivid and transparent medium bodied offering with a rustic authentic character. The main thrust is wild tart strawberry along with interesting red peach, bing cherry and fresh vine picked raspberry along with lingonberry and truffle notes. The soft tannin and citrusy acidity give structure and bitter herbs, exotic spice, cedar, saline and dusty stones add contrast to the more fruity elements making for a delicate and entertaining wine that really impresses on the second or third sip and is magic with cuisine. The alcohol is about 13% which is perfectly ripe for Frappato and Arianna uses native yeasts to ferment, this wine has almost no sulfur, similar in style to Morgon’s Lapierre and the wines of La Stoppa in Emilia, Occhipinti’s wines are unique, a bit racy and wonderfully pure. This is an iconic wine, it could be from no other winemaker and from no other place, while others make lovely Frappato, including her uncle Giusto Occhipinti at COS, this wine is the standard bearer. Drink Arianna’s 2013 Frappato from 2016 to 2024, it’s a glorious example of varietal, showing finesse and elegance, but with a raw organic streak that shines through that makes it addictive even now.”

Azienda Agricola Arianna Occhipinti SP68 Sicilia Rosso IGT, Sicily 2014 750ML ($27.95) $24 special, 13 bottles available
Grapelive 93 points “It’s well known now that Arianna Occhipinti is a superstar and one of the leading lights of the “Natural Wine” movement, but it is worth mentioning that her wines are getting better and more complex with each vintage, and she has really turned out some special stuff in the 2014 vintage, especially this SP68 Rosso in particular, it is a full flavored joyful bottle of wine. The 2014 SP68 Rosso IGT Terre Siciliane is a blend of Nero d’ Avola and Frappato, similar to Cerasuolo di Vittoria, it is a darker version that in the past with a garnet/blue hue and packed rich transparent layers of vibrant fruit, as also with Arianna’s wines there is great detail, silky tannins, a sense of place and vivid acidity, this is impressive and easy to love. Arianna’s latest SP68 starts with a bouquet of red rose petals, sweet herbs, mineral spice and a mix of black, blue and red berries with black cherry leading the way on the palate with plum, cranberry, strawberry and juicy red peach adding depth of character along with slate/stones, fennel, blood orange, dried currant, red pepper and hints of earth, cedar and bramble. At first things are light and playful, but with air things get rather more serious and deep and the finish is very clear and lengthy with blackberry and mission fig lingering on, this is Arianna at her best and the alluring and enduring charm of her creations. The SP68 red is flexible and can be enjoyed young and with many cuisine options, I think it will be superb with Thanksgiving and or Christmas meals, it can be slightly chilled, Beaujolais style, spicy dishes, even some sea foods and it holds up to meat well too, drink from 2015 to 2020, at 13% it seems larger in scale to prior releases, but still showing her delicacy and it has a very Pinot Noir mouth feel, some of the best yet from Occhipinti, don’t miss.”

Chapouter – The Good News Just Got Better

There is no argument that Chapoutier produces distinctive red wines from the Northern Rhone.  Whether that distinctiveness is a good thing, we’ll just leave that up for debate.  The whites, on the other hand, are universally lauded for their complexity and approachability throughout their long, long lives.  Drunk young, these Marsanne- and Rousanne-based wines offer exotic white floral and fresh fruit notes, which morphs into honey notes with time.

Wine Advocate 94 points “A wine reviewed last year, the 2012 Hermitage Chante Alouette comes from three separate parcels on Hermitage Hill; Meal, Les Murets and Chante Alouette. I rated it identically this go around, but it’s such a fabulous wine I decided to include it again. White peach, white flowers, honeysuckle, brioche and tropical notes all emerge from this stunning white, and while it’s not cheap, it represents a smoking value. Don’t miss it. ”

The full clusters are pressed directly and the different musts are blended and then put to ferment in well-seasoned oak vats where it matures in contact with the lees for some four months. It’s a pale, salmon-colored wine with a clean, focused nose and a light palate, that is pleasant, fresh and easy to drink. Bring out those lamb chops!” WA
