From Comando G

“These are among the most inspiring wines produced in Spain today.” –Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate

Comando G ‘La Bruja de Rozas’ Sierra de Gredos 2020 750ml $29 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Case-12 Comando G ‘La Bruja de Rozas’ Sierra de Gredos 2020 750ml $313 special (that’s only $/bottle!)
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The first red to be bottled and sold is the 2020 La Bruja de Rozas, which feels a little more reductive this year. The grapes were picked before the torrential rains, so the wine shows a little riper than the wines that were picked after (the single vineyards). It’s flinty and with a note of struck match, with good ripeness at 14.5% alcohol. This is always aromatic and floral, pale and surprisingly ethereal and expressive, a very pleasant and surprising wine that tends to please most people. This is the wine that I buy in volume, as it’s a superb introduction to the Comando G portfolio and style at a very good price. Even though the nose is never short of spectacular, to me the signature here is the super fine grainy tannins from the decomposed granite soils. This goes back to the freshness of 2016 and 2018, perhaps a little rounder and less herbal, somewhere in between the two vintages. 43,175 bottles were filled in late August and early September 2021.”

#3 Top 100 Wine Spectator 2022
HDV Hyde de Villaine Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay, Carneros 2019 750ml $89 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 96 points
“HdV—for Hyde de Villaine—was founded in 2000, a high-profile partnership between two accomplished winemaking families: the Hydes of Napa and the de Villaines of Burgundy. The Hyde Vineyard, located on the eastern edge of Carneros, is among the most celebrated in California—its grapes go into stunning single-vineyard bottlings by Aubert, Kistler, Ramey and others. The age of the vines ranges from 28 to 40 years, with old Wente and Calera clones. Winemaker Guillaume Boudet ages the wine for 15 months in French oak barrels, 20 percent new, and then lets it settle for three months in stainless steel before bottling unfined and unfiltered.”
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 96 points “The 2019 Chardonnay comes from vines in the Hyde Vineyard that are 25-40 years old and planted to Wente (60%) and Calera (40%) selections. Aged in about 15% new French oak, the nose is perfumed and pure, with scents of quince, apricot, beeswax, river stone and citrus blossoms. The palate offers a compelling dynamic of satiny, expansive fruits and fresh, focused acidity, and it has a long, nuanced finish. It will continue to unwind in bottle over the next 2-3 years and gain savory complexity over the next decade.”

Louis Roederer Cristal Millesime Brut, Champagne 2014 750ml $349 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 98 points
“This vivid Champagne shows up-front and linear definition, thanks to rapierlike acidity, with finely meshed flavors of ripe black cherry and mandarin orange fruit, raw almond, anise and cardamom spice as well as a touch of honeycomb, which all unfurl and expand on the fine, creamy palate. Sleek acidity continues through to the finish, with additional racy character provided by a streak of minerally saline and chalk, which gains momentum through the midpalate and rings out on the well-cut, lasting finish. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Drink now through 2040”
Antonio Galloni 98 points

Domaine Sylvain Pataille Bourgogne Blanc Les Mechalots 2019 750ml $36 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Neal Martin-Vinous 88-90 points
“The 2019 Bourgogne Blanc Méchalots has a higher proportion of Pinot Blanc this year as they had to replace vines on 161-49 rootstock Chardonnay. It has a lovely pineapple and passion fruit scented bouquet with light floral aromas. This is very well defined. The palate is well balanced with a touch of bitter lemon on the entry, good weight and an edgy orange rind finish. Delicious and complex.”

Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Rose ‘Fleur de Pinot’, Cote de Nuits 2019 750ml $75 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Decanter 92 points
“A surprisingly substantial wine, with moderate colour and bright, forward aromas of pure cherry fruit, with a scent of violets and a supple, moreish texture. An engaging wine that is a blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Beurrot (Pinot Gris) from several old-vine parcels. It is half directly pressed, half macerated, and fermented on native yeasts, before ageing for 24 months in large casks (one-third new).”

Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Rouge, Cote de Nuits 2019 1.5L $89 special, 4 magnums in stock now
Decanter 96 points
“Blended from the 90-year-old vines in the Clos du Roy with other old vines. The grapes are entirely fermented as whole clusters, with a gentle extraction and 24 months ageing in cask, half new. The result is a wine of impressive concentration, with pronounced aromas of ripe plum and cassis, a floral edge, plus a distinct minerality. The texture is velvety and dense, with an abundance of fine-grained tannins and a superb, balanced persistence on the finish.”

Agusti Torello Mata Kripta Gran Reserva Cava, Catalonia 2013 750ml $79 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“1978 is the first vintage with which AGUSTI TORELLO MATA makes his dream come true: to make an exceptional cava. With 20 years of professional experience, he makes his first KRIPTA bottles in his private winery in Can Rossell with a blend from three unique plots in the Penedès. Macabeo, Xare·lo and Parellada begin a long aging with cork stopper, obtaining a unique bouquet that consolidates it as one of the great wines of the world. The amphorae shape bottle, which was designed and patented, is a tribute to Ancient Rome. The label was designed by Rafael Bartolozzi and evokes the Mediterranean Sea of Cadaqués, the vine and the olive tree: a trilogy of the classics. KRIPTA has been the most awarded cava since its first gold medal in Bratislava in 1984. Every vintage is an award that reinforces excellence.”

“The Moro family has been farming the same vineyards in the Ribera del Duero since 1932, the birth year of Emilio Moro (the patriarch) as well as the year in which the Finca Resalso vineyard was planted. For two generations, the grapes were sold on the bulk market. In 1988, current proprietor José Moro Espinosa invested the family’s entire savings into winery equipment and Bodegas Emilio Moro was born. The bodega joined the D.O. Ribera del Duero in 1989 and quickly established itself as one of the region’s leading producers of top quality wines. The winery is located at the top of a bend in the Duero River in the town of Pesquera del Duero, just to the Northwest of Peñafiel.” –Skurnik Wines

New Reviews for the Pierres (Gimonnet and Peters)

From Audrey Frick of Jeb Dunnuck dot com

Didier Gimonnet’s wines are pure, classical Blanc de Blancs Champagne.  Gimonnet’s devotion to cool, minerally Champagne made from Chardonnay borders on monastic. At their best, Gimonnet seems to have a quiet resonance, like a beautiful bell struck in a quiet stone hallway. The wines draw you in, not with bombast or noise, but with a clear directness and purity of tone, a personality just as much reflected in the man himself. That pursuit of beauty and elegance, from the entry-level to the top of the line, makes Gimonnet a perpetually top grower in Champagne.

Arriving in November:

Pierre Gimonnet et Fils Blanc de Blancs Cuis Premier Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $54.50 pre-arrival special
Pierre Gimonnet et Fils Blanc de Blancs Cuis Premier Cru Brut, Champagne NV 375ml $33 pre-arrival special
Pierre Gimonnet et Fils Blanc de Blancs Cuis Premier Cru Brut, Champagne NV 1.5L $138 pre-arrival special
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 92 points
“This NV Champagne 1er Cru Blanc de Blancs Cuis Brut is expressive, with more classic appeal, though it takes on a light reductive tinge, with flint and wet asphalt aromatics. It has more direct concentration, with fresh green apple underneath, lemon zest, and white blossoms. The palate is more focused and concentrated, with a long finish and a pronounced chalky texture. The palate is long and persistent, with fresh acidity. I think this will mature nicely and take on classic blanc de blancs custard in the future. Drink 2025-2045.”

Pierre Gimonnet et Fils Blanc de Blancs Gastronome, Champagne 2018 750ml $69 pre-arrival special
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 93 points
“The 2018 Champagne Cuvée Gastronome Brut has a bit sunnier feel, with primary fruit aromas of Williams pear, lime blossoms, candy, and green apple. The palate is full and rounded, with a coarser mineral texture throughout compared to the other cuvée. It has wonderful salinity and takes on a more savory expression that I find quite attractive. This feel slike it has the structure to carry on for 2-3 decades to come.”

Pierre Gimonnet et Fils Cuvee Special Club Brut Millesime, Champagne 2015 750ml $105 pre-arrival special, only 12 bottles available
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 93 points
“A hint of smokiness in the 2015 Champagne Special Club Brut is followed by pithy citrus of grapefruit, white flowers, and bread dough. It has linear and energetic tension, with a long driving finish. Drink 2022-2032.”

Pierre Gimonnet et Fils Chouilly Grand Cru Special Club, Champagne 2015 750ml $148 pre-arrival special, only 6 bottles available
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 94 points
“The 2015 Champagne Grand Cru Special Club Chouilly Brut is savory in its attack, with tarragon and fresh herbs, lime zest, and saline earth. With its ripeness and rounded feel, it is approachable now. Drink 2022-2034.”

Pierre Gimonnet et Fils Cramant Grand Cru Special Club, Champagne 2015 750ml $159 pre-arrival special, only 6 bottles available
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 94 points
“Expressive and sunny, the 2015 Champagne Cramant Grand Cru Special Club Brut is ripe with orchard fruits, lemon bars, and white flowers. The palate has more depth for the range and is also broad, though it does have tension and a stony finish. With notes of salted lime, ripe white peach, and green pear, this is a more warming wine that can stand up throughout a meal. Of the 2015s, I think this one will stand up nicely over time. Drink 2024-2042.”

Pierre Gimonnet et Fils Rose de Blancs Premier Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $72 pre-arrival special, only 12 bottles available
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 92 points
“The NV Champagne Rosé de Blancs pours a pale salmon hue and offers fresh aromas of delicate flowers and raspberry as well as notes of fresh peach and almond. This is a pretty style with approachability and an ease about it now. Drink 2022-2032.”

The Pierre Peters Champagne bottlings are regularly rated by critics as “outstanding” and Rodolphe Peters is universally considered one of the top growers in Champagne. The top wine of Pierre Peters is the “Les Chetillons” (or Cuvée Spéciale) considered to be one of the best single-vineyard champagnes of the Côte des Blancs, alongside Salon and Krug’s Clos du Mesnil (though it is not a rival in price). It comes from three small parcels in the vineyard of Les Chetillons that were acquired by the family in 1930. One of the most highly-regarded sites within Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, these vines in the oldest plot of 80 acres are 68 years old, with the rest of the vines averaging 50 years old. Each parcel is vinified separately and blended to produce a single vineyard vintage. Chétillons offers a chance to witness one of Champagne’s best growers working in one of the greatest sites for Chardonnay. The results are gorgeous, as noted wine writer Peter Liem states, “there’s no denying this wines’ quality.”

Pierre Peters Cuvee de Reserve Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $61.90 pre-arrival special
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 90 points
“The NV Champagne Cuvée de Reserve Brut is vibrant with soft lime candy, wet rock, and candied green apple. There is consistency to the palate, with more candied lime, green apple, and a delicate salinity, with the dosage rounding things out nicely, This is a fantastic aperitif with an energetic mousse that is versatile and fresh to drink now or over the coming 10 years.”

Pierre Peters ‘Reserve Oubliee’ Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $125 pre-arrival special, only 6 bottles available
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 93 points
“The NV Champagne Reserve Oubilée Brut takes on more depth and lightly smoky aromas, with fresh bread dough and a hint of savory application as well as a bit of graham cracker or lemon bar. The palate also offers more depth and complexity, with saline and spice. Drink over the next 2 decades.”

Pierre Peters Cuvee Speciale ‘Les Chetillons’ Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut, Champagne 2015 750ml $289 pre-arrival special, only 10 bottles available
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 97 points
“The 2015 Champagne Les Chetillons Brut is delicate but expressive, with white flowers and a hint of confectionary sponge cake aromas. It is a pale straw with a shimmering green hue. Coming off the heels of the 2014 vintage, this is comparatively much more generous and open and is a pleasure to drink now. It has its hallmark stamp of Chetillon despite the warmth of the vintage and is not overblown. Drink 2023-2043.”

Pierre Peters Cuvee Rose for Albane Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $99 pre-arrival special, only 12 bottles available
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 94 points
“The NV Champagne Rosé For Albane Brut pours a medium pink hue and is expressive with soft floral notes of rose petal, raspberry, and apricot. The palate is juicy and fresh, with a chalky texture and structure as well as more orchard fruit of ripe peach. An incredibly charming wine that is hard to resist, this can carry on its own or throughout a meal. The finish is well-balanced and offers a light saline touch. Drink 2023-2033.”

On the subject of Champagne…

Arriving Late November

Louis Roederer Collection 243 Brut, Champagne NV 750ml $59 pre-arrival special
Louis Roederer Collection 243 Brut, Champagne NV 375ml $31.90 pre-arrival special
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 93 points
“The NV Champagne Collection 243 Brut is the third release and is based on the 2018 vintage, with the addition of 30% of the perpetual reserve started in 2012 and 10% reserve wine that has been aged in oak. It is ripe and balanced, with yellow flowers, honeycomb, and plum, and it has elegant concentration and underlying tension, precise mousse, and rich salinity, with lingering notes of croissant and delicate smoke. This will be an exciting wine in the range to follow. Drink 2022-2037.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92 points “Based on the 2018 vintage and complemented by reserve wines from a solera established in 2012, as well as younger foudre-aged reserve wines, Roederer’s newly released NV Brut Collection 243 is a pillowy, enveloping Champagne evocative of crisp stone fruits, honeycomb, white flowers and buttery pastry. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and generous, with an ample core of fruit, bright acids and a saline finish, it will offer demonstrative drinking on release.”
Wine Spectator 92 points “A vibrant Champagne that’s fine and creamy on the palate, almost plush, but bright and well-balanced throughout. Reveals a chalky base note that underscores layers of ripe pear and nectarine fruit, mandarin orange peel, oyster shell and chamomile. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. Drink now. 40,000 cases imported.”

Ar. Pe. Pe.

The Italian Alps are home to some of the most ethereal and mineral driven expressions of wine in the world. Naturally insulated from the rest of the country due to the topography, the villagers practice winemaking exactly as they have for centuries. The area was formed during the shift of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates millions of years ago, creating an incredibly diverse mix of soils.

Here are grown alpine expressions of the vaulted Nebbiolo grape, which harken back to Barolo and Barbareso styles of years past. Near the Italian-Swiss border, Ar. Pe. Pe. produces Chiavennasca (the local name for Nebbiolo) from terraced vineyards that have been in their family for generations. Ar. Pe. Pe. is the benchmark producer for the region. Considering the advancement of climate change these wines are well on their way to becoming the next hotbed for Nebbiolo in Italy, as freshness and elegance become more elusive further south.

Decanter 93 points
“Il Pettirosso, or ‘robin redbreast’, is a dedication to Ar Pe Pe’s founder, Arturo who first created this bottling in 1997. A selection of casks ready to be bottled after relatively minimal ageing, it brings together parcels in the subzones of Sassella and Grumello. Piercing pure rose, cherry blossom and tobacco lead the way to a nucleus of sweet raspberry, red cherry and subtle flintiness. It’s fine-boned in frame and zesty in acidity, with silky-smooth tannins that glide effortlessly across the palate. The epitome of elegance. Drinking Window 2021 – 2028.”

“The 2013 Valtellina Superiore Grumello Riserva Sant’Antonio is a bold, pungent wine. Dark red and purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice race across the palate. A deep, vertical Riserva, the 2013 is very young today, but it is so impressive. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s striking inner perfume, sweetness and sheer pedigree.”

Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“$59. From Sassella, one of the most celebrated villages in the greater Valtellina appellation on the northern bank of the Adda River, this is the quintessential mountain Nebbiolo. Named for the “star of the Rhaetian Alps,” the Ar. Pe. Pe. 2015 Valtellina Superiore Nebbiolo Sassella Stella Retica opens slowly to reveal wild berry, cassis, smoke, tar and crushed granite. The wine is gentle and polished, wrapping smoothly over the senses. It has has ample time to soften in the bottle and is drinking beautifully right now with some Alpine cheese wedges. Some 42,000 bottles were made.”
Kerin O’Keefe-Wine Enthusiast 93 points “Woodland berry, camphor, wild rose and wet stone aromas shape the nose. The chiseled palate delivers red cherry, cranberry, Alpine herb and star anise set against taut, ultrafine tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2022–2030.”

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points
“The 2009 Valtellina Superiore Sassella Ultimi Raggi is beguiling, rich, dense and powerful. Cinnamon, dried dark cherry, leather, smoke and licorice come together in a full-bodied, somewhat rustic wine with no shortage of character. The Ultimi Raggi is made from the last fruit on the vine to ripen, and is therefore sweeter and richer through the mid-palate, with more palate weight and overall density than is found in most of these wines. I loved it.”

Red purplish fruit, dried herbs, orange peel, spices, rose petals and cinnamon are layered in this exotic, beguiling Valtellina Superiore. Readers will find a wine of terrific energy, with bright acids that run through a tight finish. It’s hard to say for a wine that is nearly ten years old, but the 2013 might still need time!”

“One of two late-release wines from Ar. Pe. Pe., the 2013 Valtellina Superiore Grumello Riserva Buon Consiglio is a beautifully light and delicate expression of Nebbiolo with a lean, ruby-tinged appearance. The wine ages to silkiness and extreme suppleness, and I cannot help but notice the unique aromas of toasted hazelnut, mountain flower and balsam herb that rise so delicately from the bouquet. These results are exquisite and ultra delicate, giving the wine a lithe or ethereal personality. What a beauty. Only 6,000 bottles were released.”
Wine Spectator 94 points “A perfumed red, exuding aromas and flavors of crushed raspberry and pureed strawberry, exotic spice and graphite, dried marjoram and thyme. “Loaded with finesse and energy and still youthfully austere, this linear, structured red offers tart cranberry, blood orange and star anise sensations. A vein of salty mineral provides the backdrop while fine-grained tannins provide elegant structure and support. Racy acidity keeps it balanced. Give it time to fully develop and blossom into even more of a beauty. Drink 2025–2035. -Kerin O’Keefe”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points “A release of about 6,000 bottles, the Ar. Pe. Pe. 2013 Valtellina Superiore Riserva Sassella Nuova Regina draws its fruit from terraced vineyards delineated by rocky drywalls. The vines are at least 50 years old and planted in friable metamorphic rock or gneiss shaped by glaciers. This wine is made in a highly traditional manner with extended skin maceration in oak casks, and all the harvest work is done by hand. This is a true beauty with enormous finesse and a deep well of aromatic nuances that center around wild berries, blue flowers and iron ore. The wine is carefully aged with fine and silky tannins. It tastes great, so if you have a bottle you can drink it now or wait longer if that is your pleasure.”

Domaine la Remejeanne

What do some of the hardest to find cult Champagne producers (Prevost, Bereche, Dehu & Cedric Bouchard), top names in Loire (Boudignon, Collier & Gerard Boulay), and super-scorer Vincent Paris of Cornas have in common? These are producers brokered by Thomas Calder. If you’ve tried any of the aforementioned estates (and we hope you have), you owe it to yourself to explore the estate he represents in the Southern Rhone: Domaine la Remejeanne. The domaine’s wines represent an absolute bargain (topping out at under $30/bottle) and capture all the elegance and complexity you’d expect from a Calder selection.

Run by a father-son team Remy and Oliver Klein in the high elevation village of Sabran, they farm a visually stunning estate of 86 acres directly facing Mount Ventoux and entirely organic to boot. This proximity to the mountain puts the domaine right in the path of the Mistral wind, which cools the air and creates grapes of greater intensity while retaining freshness and acidity. While they fly under the radar of American reviewers, they are well loved in their home country. We adore this estate and know you will, too.

“This estate always punches well above its simple Côtes-du-Rhône appellation and are worth seeking out.” –Matt Walls, contributor for Decanter Magazine

Domaine la Remejeanne Les Chevrefeuilles Blanc, Cotes du Rhône 2021 750ml $18 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“[Translated and edited for clarity] This wine shows a clear and limpid color. It presents a fresh and lemony nose. Delicate aromas of white fruits (pear, etc) emerge. On the palate, it opens with a saline note from the Clairette, which brings great vivacity to the Roussanne and Granache Blanc.”
Importer Note “Certified organic. Chèvrefeuille [pronounced: shev-ruh-foy] is French for honeysuckle, the perfume of which you cannot escape during springtime in the southern Rhône. The Klein family is widely respected for their supple and aromatic Côtes du Rhône rouges, and under the tutelage of Olivier Klein the Domaine’s white wines are now reaching the same heights. The prevalence of limestone in the Sabran vineyards certainly helps in this regard, preserving freshness.”

Korrell

Korrell is a rising star Nahe producer.  The Weingut goes back to 1832, but it’s only with young Martin taking over the cellar that the family has attained their current standing.  Their name has been ringing in insider circles for several years now, but their “Von Den Grossen Lagen” just won at the Riesling Cup and they’re officially blowing up now.

The best vineyard that Korrell owns (and the backbone for all their Rieslings) is a monopole site called, appropriately, “Paradis.”  Paradis is a limestone-heavy site (a rarity, much like Keller’s Kirschspiel GG), with shallow soils and privileged exposition—in short, everything you could ask of a Riesling vineyard, especially to produce dry wines.  The revitalization of the site, combined with Martin’s work in the cellar, has vaulted Korrell into the top tier of producers both in the Nahe and across Germany.

“Very clean and fresh, but behind the effusive, fruit-salad character that makes this so seductive, there is a lot of structure and the finish keeps pumping out the fruit and chalky minerality. Drink or hold.”
Grapelive 94 points “The radiant and graceful Korrell Paradies Trocken leads with expressive pure apple tones. [It] impresses for its elegance and subtle character. It’s a wine of great poise and delicacy, especially admirable for such a young Riesling. The monopole estate vineyard, Paradies, is the oldest single site Korrell has and is the flagship wine from winemaker Martin Korrell. It comes from his family’s vines that are set on limestone and clay soils in Bad Kreuznach area of the Nahe region. The Paradies Riesling Trocken is a gorgeous white of depth and precise winemaking that takes advantage of this unique site in the Nahe. This wine is the heart and soul of Korrell and it is product of its unique climat,or terroir. It sees more sunshine and the limestone allows for serious concentration, while retaining acidity, though there is always great attention paid to pick dates to finely tune this signature bottling to place and vintage. Korrell mixes some traditional stainless fermentations with some native yeast and barrel ferments to craft his wines. The Paradies shows a beautiful leesy finesse that reminds me a bit of the Von Winning GG’s, with a long time on the lees adding a beautiful glycerin density to this gorgeous dry Riesling. Coming off Korrel’s incredible Riesling Cup win for his Von den Grossen Lagen (Grand Crus) Riesling Trocken, I was absolutely thrilled to be able to try this wine, and found this particular wine just as intriguing. Martin focuses on preserving heightened aromatics and crisp mineral tones, while allowing the mouth feel and depth to shine through. It is an amazing accomplishment to get it all right, and Korrell deserves his time in the limelight. This is complex and glorious stuff. Layers of green apple, peach, mixed fresh citrus and melon fruits are lifted by liquid rock, steely mineral and faint perfume of white flowers along with a silkiness of mouth feel. While still delightfully crisp, [this delivers] an exciting energy filled performance. This is a winery that about to break out and join some elite company, in fact they are riding high after winning, as mentioned, the famous Riesling Cup award with their unique multi (Grand) cru Von den Grossen Lagen Trocken Riesling. This wine is just extra proof there is real quality here! The lightly golden hued and generously textured Paradies will age well. It’s full of charm, class and potential. Best to let this one have another 3 to 5 years, though it certainly is delicious right now.”

Weingut Korrell Johanneshof Kreuznacher Paradies Riesling Eiswein, Nahe 2016 375ml $79 special, 17 half-bottles in stock now
Grapelive 94 points
“Korrell is one of the Nahe’s latest break out stars and every wine I’ve tried from Martin Korrell has been absolutely stunning, including this Eiswein. Crafted from old vines at their estate monopole Paradies Vineyard in Bad Kreuznach, from those grapes that hang out until the first freeze and were individual berry picked off the vine. Concentrated in sugars, but still bristling with natural acidity the gorgeous and opulent 2016 Korrell Eiswein Paradies goes on and on in mouth. Even with the residual sugar levels off the carts, this wine stays incredibly balanced and doesn’t drink as sweet as you’d imagine, making for a heavenly experience from its perfumed nose to its lingering tropical fruits. This is entrancing stuff with layers of lychee, candied pineapple, apricot jelly, honeycomb, lime blossom, white roses, chamomile, a hint of spearmint, mineral spice and cool wet stone. A rare and exotic, this Korrell Eiswein is treat beyond words, and, while the Mosel is better known for sweet wines, I have found the Nahe in some vintages are more than equal. In fact I still think a contender for the greatest wine I ever tasted was one of Donnhoff’s version of Eiiswein from just up the river! While Tokaji and Sauternes grab sweet wine headlines, I honestly believe the Germans have them beat with TBA’s and Eiswein, because of the racy acidity that still remains in these Riesling beauties. Korrell used specially selected yeasts as there is no chance to do Sponti on the ultra concentrated Paradies Eiswein, it needs extra special attention to detail, Korrell adds. It is pressed in a special small press for sweet wines with low quantity, read tiny production, but not wooden because they don’t want too much air contact [so as] to keep and preserve the exotic fruit aromas as much as possible as well as fresh details. Tasted from 375ml, half bottle, the 2016 Korrell Paradies Eiswein is an amazing product, and sadly isn’t listed in the United States as of yet, though their Trocken(s) should be available later this spring or early summer, so remember this one for if and when you get to Germany.”

Korrell “Von Den Grossen Lagen” Riesling Trocken, Nahe 2017 750ml $33 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott-JamesSuckling 94 points
“What a beautiful nose of leaves and white flowers, dripping after rain. With aeration, peach, nectarine and mandarin-orange notes emerge. Concentrated, racy and very polished, this is a stunning dry riesling with a long, mineral finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”
Wine Spectator 92 points “This fruity yet dry Riesling is filled with flavors of currant and gooseberry, while juicy, orangelike acidity cuts through, carrying freshness and providing balance. The complex finish is long and inviting. This nicely sculpted white is ready to drink now, but will only get better with age. Drink now through 2027. 1,500 cases made.”
