The Wines of Antichi Vigneti Cantalupo:

Started in 1969, Antichi Vigneti Cantalupo has only expanded on the wine-making tradtions of their lands dating back thousands of years, including innovations like the use of Oak Barrels over the foudre used since the days of the Roman Empire.

Located southeast of Gattinara and just under a hundred miles north of Barolo, the Ghemme commune of the alto-Piemonte region, tucked up into the foothills of the alps is a long neglected producer of refined nebbiolos. With sandy granite soils and a colder climate than Barolo or Barbaresco, the wine of this region have a character all their own.

Antichi Vigneti Cantalupo Ghemme Anno Primo 2015 750ml $39 special, 12 bottle available
Vinous 91 points
“The 2015 Ghemme Anno Primo is a powerful, bold wine Muscular tannins wrap around a core of red cherry, spice, mint, new leather, licorice, blood orange, dried flowers and earthy notes. There is quite a bit of depth here, but also some elements of rusticity that are likely to remain.”

Antichi Vigneti Cantalupo Ghemme Collis Carellae 2015 750ml $59 special, 12 bottles available

Antichi Vigneti Cantalupo Ghemme Collis Breclemae 2013 750ml  $59 special, 12 bottles available
Vinous 96 points
“The 2013 Ghemme Collis Breclemae is fabulous. Deep, dark and also translucent, the 2013 possesses magnificent clarity as well as structure. Black cherry, lavender, truffle, mint, spice and new leather all develop in an ample, resonant Ghemme that hits all the right notes. A rich, substantial finish rounds things out in style. The 2013 can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring, but it also has the pedigree to develop in the cellar for many years to come. Each time I come back to the 2013 it is more impressive.”

Pre-Arrivals

Arriving 3/24

Pol Roger Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill Brut 2013 750ml $319 special, 12 bottles arriving
Wine Enthusiast 98
“Although ready to drink, this very fine Champagne has plenty of aging to go. With its rich Pinot Noir and ripe fruits, it is generous while also fully textured. Complex and balanced, mature fruit and toast working together, this is a great wine.”
Vinous 97 “Rich and remarkably pure, the 2013 is super-expressive right out of the gate. Bright saline notes cut through a core of lemon confit, dried flowers, apricot, tangerine peel, mint and sage… there is a feeling of transparency here that is so alluring. The 2013 is a terrific example of power with no excess weight in Champagne. I loved it.”

Arriving in June

Casa Castillo Las Gravas Jumilla 2020 750ml $69 special, 36 bottles arriving

Wine Advocate 98 points ” The wine is super perfumed and floral, really showy, elegant, nuanced and refined, with the notes of pine needles and wet soil much subtler than in the 2019. There is an ethereal character to the 2020s that I haven’t found in any previous vintage here, but at the same time, the wines are very mineral and have lots of energy and light. There is precision, cleanliness, definition and elegance like I hadn’t seen before and refined tannins with a pungent mineral sensation in the textured finish. This is an incredible wine for the price asked…”

Château Beychevelle St Julian Rouge 2015 750ml $149 special, 12 bottles arriving
Jeb Dunnick 95 Points
“The 2015 Beychevelle comes across as much more powerful and plush in bottle than it did as a barrel sample. The black cherry, smoke, leather, tobacco, spice and incense notes are all endowed with notable textural depth. Voluptuous but also quite tannic, the 2015 is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. Readers should expect a powerful, brooding Saint-Julien.”

Château Beychevelle St Julian Rouge 2016 750ml $149 special, 2 bottles arriving
Wine Advocate 95 Points “… a stunning bouquet of vibrant, shimmering blackberry and wild strawberry fruit laced with crushed stone and rose petals. The well-balanced palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a slightly savory/dried blood finish that lingers in the mouth… [t]his will surely be a benchmark for this Saint Julien estate.”

Muga Seleccion Especial Rioja 2018 750 ml $41.90 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 points
“2018 was a cooler vintage, with a fairly long maturation, which made the wines somewhat fresher and less alcoholic, … a classical blend of the four red varieties from Rioja, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano with contained ripeness … It’s medium to full- bodied, with very fine, chalky tannins, combining power and elegance. Amazing!

Vouvray Moelleux Clos Bourg 1er Trie 2016 750ml $59 special, 94 bottles available
Wine Spectator 96 points
“This is ripe and broad, taking a slightly more power-driven approach, with a mix of tropical mango and papaya fruit, backed by orchard fruit accents of yellow apple and peach. The long, heather honey–accented finish has light piecrust and crystalized ginger hints. Best from 2020 through 2035.”
Wine Advocate 94 points “Huet’s bright golden colored 2016 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux Première Trie is clear, fresh and intensely fruity on the remarkably precise nose. Medium-bodied yet concentrated, elegant and sweet on the palate, this is a salty, piquant, mineral Chenin Blanc with intense, elegant and well-structured fruit. The wine reveals a chalky finesse and long tensioned finish.”

Ameztoi Txokalina Rubentis Rosado 2021 750ml $21.90 special 36+ bottles available
Vinous 91 points
“Pale orange. Finely etched red berry, citrus zest and floral aromas, along with building herb and mineral flourishes. Taut and nervy in the mouth, offering sappy strawberry, cherry and tangerine flavors that show fine delineation and spicy lift. Closes firm and right, with persistent red fruit notes and a refreshingly bitter edge.”

This is our deepest discount of the year!

Felsina Chianti Riserva 2016 1.5L $89.95 special, 8 bottle available
Wine Advocate 94 points
“Streamlined and elegant, this mid-weight red trots out notes of grilled herb and dark fruit nuances that segue to spice, tilled earth and savory tobacco, with great complexity. This 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardenga is still a bit closed and tight, but this beautiful wine boasts all the best qualities of this vintage. It shows elegance and power, two contrasting characteristics that only work well together in the world’s most achieved expressions. The most satisfying aspect of this Riserva is the crisp acidity on the close that keeps the palate refreshed and ready for the next sip.”

Felsina Chianti 2018 1.5L $115 special, 10 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 97 Points “The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is an absolutely stunning wine. The archetype of Rancia in the past has been of a big, potent Chianti Classico but in 2018, Rancia is a wine of mind-blowing elegance and finesse. Silky, perfumed and indescribably finessed, the 2018 dazzles from start to finish. It’s a magical wine in every way.”

Felsina Fontalorro 2018 1.5L $128 special, 11 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 95 Points “The 2018 Fontalloro is bright, floral and full of energy. In most vintages, Fontalloro is quite open, but the 2018 is especially nervy and taut. That won’t be an issue in time, of course, but readers should plan on being patient. Sangiovese is so expressive here.”

Isole e Olena Cepparello 2015 1.5L $149 special, 5 bottles available
James Suckling 96 Points
“Shows lots of black cherries, cranberry tea, caramelized orange peel, roasted herbs and citrus peel. Full-bodied with ripe and quite round tannins that frame layers of cherries. Bright and fresh, yet rich and long at the same time. The sangiovese character really springs out of the glass.”

Isole e Olena Cepparello 2017 1.5L $169 special, 22 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 97 Points “The 2017 Cepparello is another in a series of stunningly beautiful Cepparellos from Paolo de Marchi. Bright and beautifully focused in the glass, with tremendous depth, the 2017 is positively stellar from the very first taste. Succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, spice, menthol and coffee all open up with a bit of air. Here, too, Paolo De Marchi has done a tremendous job in preserving freshness in the wine. Readers who can muster the patience will be rewarded with a spectacular wine.”

High-End and High-Volume Burgundies

As we come to the end of our Month long sale on Magnum sized wines, it’s a good time to focus on some of our High-end Burgundies, also available in these large formats.

Dujac Puligny 1er Cru Folatieres 2020 1.5L $599 special, 1 bottle available
Vinous 90-92 Points
“The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a nicely detailed bouquet with fine delineation, orange pith and light linen scents developing with time. The palate is well balanced with tangy orange zest on the entry, quite linear and strict with a fresh finish, though it does not quite possess the mineralité of the Combettes.”
Wine Advocate 90-92 Points “Notes of pear, waxy yellow orchard fruit, nutmeg and freshly baked bread introduce the 2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières, a delicate, medium-bodied white that’s bright, fine-boned and saline in this warm vintage.”

Montville Vosne-Romanee 1er Malconsorts 2017 1.5L $949 special, 1 bottle available
Decanter 95 points
“The de Montille Malconsorts has lightened up in 2017, which may be a vintage thing. This is less oaky and chewy than some of its predecessors. The 100% whole bunches are very well done, adding some savoury, sappy notes to the layered red and black fruits, with floral top-notes wafting above the surface. Sensitive winemaking from Brian Sieve.”
Vinous 92-94 Points “The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru is entirely whole cluster fruit matured in 50% new oak. It has a backward and reticent bouquet, yet one can tell there are coiled up black fruit here, mixed with raspberry coulis and mulberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, slightly chewy tannin at first, grippy and assertive in style. Yet it manages to retain admirable balance with an engaging, quite saline, lightly spiced finish that fans out with style. Excellent.”
Wine Advocate 93+ points “The 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Malconsorts is also showing beautifully, soaring from the glass with aromas of cassis, peonies, orange rind and dark berry fruit, with little hint of the tertiary complexity to come. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy, but it has real depth and concentration at the core too, despite the charm of the vintage. The finish is long and penetrating.”

Hubert Lignier Clos De La Roche 2018 1.5L $1049 special, 1 bottle available
Decanter 96 Points
“Laurent Lignier uses 0.8ha of his two holdings in the climats of Les Fremières and Monts Luisants to produce this refined expression of Clos de la Roche. Savoury and sweet, with 30% whole clusters adding aromatic spices and extra structure in 2018, this is graceful, subtle and concentrated with palate-caressing summer berry fruit and refreshing palate length. Drinking Window 2026 – 2036.”
Wine Advocate 95+Points “Revisited in bottle, Lignier’s 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru lives up to its fine performance in barrel, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries and orange rind mingled with truffle, espresso roast, loamy soil and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, concentrated and seamless, it’s layered and vibrant, with a deep core of pure fruit that largely conceals impressive reserves of fine, powdery tannins. Concluding with a long and saline finish, it will merit and reward at least a dozen years’ patience, likely hitting its stride around age 20.”
Vinous 94-96 Points “The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru comprises one-third whole bunch and 30% new oak. The nose is uncharacteristically backward, though with coaxing it offers enticing dark cherries, blackberry, sous-bois and pine aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit and a fine bead of acidity. Taut and linear, leading to a very precise, persistent finish that is a pure joy. Divine.”
