Descendientes de J. Palacios ‘Petalos’, Bierzo 2014 750ML ($24.95) $18 re-arrival special
Case-12 Descendientes de J. Palacios ‘Petalos’, Bierzo 02014 750ML ($269.95) $199 pre-arrival special (that’s only $16.58/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2014 Pétalos del Bierzo was already up for tasting as they sell the wine quite quickly even if the volumes are not small, but the wine had only been in bottle for one week and it might have been a little closed, especially when compared with the aromatic 2013. However, the aromas, if subtle, are phenomenal, very complete and balanced, with an extra degree of complexity when compared with the 2013. The harvest was a little healthier without being easy (or dry). There is great volume in the palate, fleshy, juicy and rich without being heavy, medium-bodied, somehow similar to the 2012 even if it still needs to develop further complexity. There’s always a subdued minerality, a texture and mouthfeel difficult to find in wines of this price level. This is approachable now, but it will be better in one year and should develop nicely in bottle. Drink: 2016-2022.”
James Suckling 92 points “A pure mencía with wild strawberries, black pepper and underbrush. Balanced and pretty red showing subtle berry character throughout. Silky tannins. The entry-level red of the famous Bierzo estate. Drink now.”

Hot New Releases & Cellar Selections

Spottswoode Family Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon, St. Helena 2014 750ML ($219.95) $179 pre-arrival special
Robert Parker 96+ points “This first-growth estate in St. Helena has produced a 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon that is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. It is certainly one of the wines of the vintage. Gorgeously opaque purple, it offers up notes of spring flowers, blueberries, blackcurrants, some baking spice and graphite. It is full-bodied, concentrated and rich, with layers of fruit. The wine builds and builds on the palate, with a great finish of 45+ seconds. This is a sensational 2014 to drink over the next 20+ years.”
Antonio Galloni 96 points “Spottswoode 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is striking. Black cherry, plum, graphite, spice and menthol are some of the signatures. Intensely mineral and savory, the 2014 comes across as a slightly restrained version of the 2013. The flavor and tannin profiles are both quite similar, but the 2014 is a bit smaller-scaled in all of its dimensions. That is not a bad thing, as the 2014 will be ready to drink sooner. This is an impressive showing.”
James Suckling 96 points “Amazing burnt-orange and currant aromas with tar and lead pencil. Blackberries, too. Changes all the time. Mesmerizing. Full-bodied and powerful with super-polished tannins and a long and intense finish. The polished and fine tannins coat your mouth. Glorious. Needs three to four years to soften.”

Beringer Vineyards Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2009 750ML ($149.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is a beautifully balanced wine. Firm yet well-integrated tannins frame a core of dark red berries, flowers, mint, spices and licorice. The Reserve shows lovely inner perfume and mid-palate juiciness. It should drink well with a minimum of cellaring. The main vineyards in the 2009 are Home (37%), Lampyridae (23%), Vogt (14%), Chabot (11%) and Rancho del Oso (9%). Each lot was aged separately for about two years before the final blend was assembled.”

Beringer Vineyards Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($149.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Robert Parker 96 points “Revealing the great blending skills of Beringer’s winemaking team, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is a winner. Having purchased Private Reserves for many years, I can attest that they age incredibly well. The 1991, one of the great successes of that vintage, is still aging beautifully at nearly 25 years of age. The sensational 2012 (10,000 cases) boasts an opaque purple color along with abundant aromas of charcoal, burning embers, cr?me de cassis, chocolate, blackberries and licorice. The long, complex, compelling, full-bodied texture along with terrific purity and a savory, rich mouthfeel result in a classic, quintessential Napa Cabernet Sauvignon to drink now and over the next 20-25 years.”

BV Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Robert Parker 94 points “The deep ruby/purple-colored 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour is BV’s flagship wine. It boasts sweet notes of charcoal, burning embers, vanillin, tar and copious quantities of blackcurrant fruit. In keeping with this generously endowed vintage, the wine is supple, full-bodied, multidimensional and opulent. It will drink beautifully young and last for 20-25 years.”

BV Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Case-6 BV Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($619.95) $559 pre-arrival special (that’s only $93.17/bottle!)
Robert Parker 95+ points “One of the two flagship cuvées, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour is a fabulous wine. Obviously, this is the one wine that received the most meticulous attention from their outside consultant Michel Rolland. A great effort in 2013, as one might expect in this vintage, this wine needs 5-6 years and seems capable of lasting 30-40 or more, given the history of the great BV Private Reserves. Inky purple to the rim, with an extraordinary nose of créme de cassis and kirsch, licorice, cedarwood, and a touch of underbrush, the wine hits the palate with a full-bodied, powerful, concentrated, dense style, has great acidity, moderately sweet tannin, and a long, long finish. This wine is young and still slightly unformed, but loaded with potential and upside. Forget it for 5-6 years and drink it over the following half-century.”

Bonus 96 Point Cab!

Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet – Shiraz, South Australia 2014 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 96 points “This has some real poise and depth in the glass; it’s inky dark and deeply colored. The fruits are in the boysenberry, blackberry, plum and blueberry spectrum, and there’s plenty of black tea as well as hints of bergamot. It’s wine with a wealth of oak-derived spices and a coal, smoky, savory edge. The palate’s plush and ripe, opening out over fleshy dark-fruit flavors in a soft and charming mode. It then charges up with plenty of rich, ripe tannin and remains long and saturated through the finish. Balanced and rich, it’s really satisfying, holding succulent and on point. Best from 2020 and for more than a decade after that. This is a great 389. A 53%/47% split in 2014: sourced from Barossa Valley, Wrattonbully, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra.”

Two Classic Vintages

One Classic Producer

In 1979, Elio Grasso left his lucrative banking job to produce wine from his family’s old farm. Under Aldo Conterno’s guidance, he converted the farm into a winery and went on to become one of the highest regarded winemakers in the region. His style straddles the traditionalist and modernist camps. His son, Gianluca, followed in his father’s footsteps shortly after to become winemaker. From the Gavarini vineyard, Gianluca has produced the Runcot since 1995. We’re pleased to announce two new offers of Runcot from two of Piedmont’s finest not-too-recent vintages!

Here Tomorrow

Elio Grasso Runcot, Barolo Riserva DOCG 2006 750ML ($159.95) $119 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 96+ points “The 2006 Barolo Riserva Runcot is a huge, structured wine bursting at the seams with fruit. The French oak (100% new) is beautifully integrated. Today the wine is understandably quite reticent but its pedigree is hard to miss. Flowers, licorice and minerals linger on the finish. The 2006 Runcot needs time, most likely lots of it. Let me just say I can’t wait to taste this powerhouse once it has had more time in bottle. It is a dazzling effort.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!

Elio Grasso Runcot, Barolo Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($169.95) $119 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 97 points “The 2008 Barolo Riserva Rüncot is an exceptional wine that is only made in the best years. It was produced in 2008, 2010 and 2013. The wine undergoes a 40-day maceration time with four years in oak and one more year of bottle aging. The results are sublime and generous. Riserva Rüncot opens to a beautifully tempered and expressive bouquet that exhibits elements of wild berry, forest floor, candied fruit, licorice, cola and dried ginger. The balsamic signature is particularly beautiful and elegant. Smooth and silky tannins denote the mouthfeel and carry the wine forward over the palate. This is one of the top releases from Piedmont this year.”
Antonio Galloni 95+ points “The 2008 Barolo Riserva Runcot is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. Smoke, tar, licorice, menthol, plums and spices form a tapestry of undeniable class. The sweet, perfumed fruit typical of the 2008s here is evident in the glass. A rich, sumptuous wine, the 2008 Runcot is fabulous. The 2008 spent 45 months in new French oak, all of which it has handled with superb grace. Even though the Runcot is one of the few Barolos that handles new French oak this well, once again I wonder what it might taste like if aged like the rest of the Grasso Barolos. Dark red/black fruit, spices, new leather and smoke add the last nuances of complexity.”

Antonio Galloni 93 points “A deep, powerful wine, the 2013 Chianti Classico Riserva has quite a bit of depth for a cool, late-ripening vintage. Sage, tobacco, menthol, smoke and dark cherry hit the palate in a deep, beautifully layered Chianti Classico endowed with real personality and class. This is another terrific wine from Fèlsina. Hints of leather, smoke and licorice reappear on the deeply expressive, virile finish.”

Arriving Late October

New Ramey Releases

After working through various positions in wineries as diverse as Lindeman’s in Australian and Chateau Petrus in Bordeaux, David Ramey decided to found his own winery where his education began: in the heart of California’s winemaking areas of Napa and Sonoma.  He contracted with grapegrowers in the Larry Hyde vineyard and produced a scant 260 cases a year for his first two harvests.  His reputation for high quality wine spread and so did the contracts: he added two blocks of old vine Wente Clone Chardonnay from the Rudd’s vineyards in Oakville.

Today the winery is known for producing high quality Chardonnays, Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux styles blends and Syrahs.  For David, this begins with using some of the finest vineyard land in California, near the winery in Healdsburg.  In the winery, he employs several methods to create balanced, rich wines with depth and complexity.  The wines undergo full malolactic fermentation, fine lees stirring and aging, minimal to no filtration and a balanced approach to oak aging: wines see new oak aging depending upon the wine and vintage.  He uses natural yeast fermentation and partial destemming.

New Releases Arriving Late October:

Ramey Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay Carneros 2014 750ML ($69.95) $51.90 pre-arrival special
Wine Enthusiast 94 points “This bold, beautiful wine has toasted, oaky undertones that support concentrated layers of apple skin, caramelized crème brûlée and a texture of gritty minerality. Papaya, mango and baked pineapple tug at the palate amidst a strong streak of stone.”
Wine Advocate 93 points “A little closed at this youthful stage, the 2014 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard offers subtle honeyed peach, pineapple and passion fruit notes with touches of baking bread and cashews. The palate delivers the goods, packed with rich tropical fruit characters and a toasty/cedary undercurrent, framed by lively acidity and finishing long, with some spices coming through.”
Stephen Tanzer—Vinous 93 points “(14.6% alcohol; aged in 31% new oak but almost no once-used barrels): Bright, light yellow. Brisk, racy aromas of lemon curd, anise and minerals. Still tightly wound and a bit oaky but already shows a lovely combination of lemony lift, glyceral texture and butterscotch richness. Perhaps a bit less powerful than the 2013 and 2012 bottlings.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
The average price is $59

Ramey Woolsey Road Vineyard Chardonnay Russian River Valley 2014 750ML ($69.95) $56 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2014 Chardonnay Woolsey Road Vineyard is a powerful, intense wine with real phenolic intensity. This is an especially rich, deep and layered wine with exquisite finesse and pedigree. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2014 for at least a few years. This is a special Chardonnay in the making.
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2014 Chardonnay Woolsey Road Vineyard has exotic jasmine, pineapple and guava notes with hints of crème brulee and croissant. Medium-bodied with plenty of finesse in the mouth, it gives a nice balance between the fruit and savory flavors, with a silken texture and finishing long and toasty.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!

Ramey Platt Vineyard Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2014 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2014 Chardonnay Platt Vineyard has expressive pink grapefruit, warm peaches and brioche notes with hints of praline and ginger. Medium-bodied with great richness and depth in the mouth, it has a lovely creamy texture offset by a wicked backbone of freshness, finishing long with mineral and savory/yeasty layers.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!

Ramey Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay Russian River Valley 2014 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2014 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard is the most exuberant and layered of David Ramey’s Chardonnays. It is also stylistically the wine that is closest in style to past. Rich, sumptuous and layered, the Ritchie expresses intensity in all of its dimensions. Even with all of its richness, the 2014 confers aromatic intensity and freshness. This, too, is very nicely done.”
Wine Advocate 95 points “Youthfully mute at this primary stage, the 2014 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard offers suggestions of lemon curd, white peaches and white grapefruit with underlying notes of honeyed toast and butterscotch. The palate is full-on seduction with an appealingly oily texture and tons of peaches and cream flavors, finishing long with a lively lift.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!

Ramey Annum Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2014 750ML ($99.95) $79 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 91-94 points “The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Annum is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Rich, unctuous and powerful, as it was last year, the 2014 is endowed with layers of dark, silky fruit, striking inner sweetness and gorgeous aromatics, all qualities that are typical of the eastern portion of Oakville.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Ramey Pedregal Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 2014 750ML ($219.95) $169 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 92-95 points “The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal Vineyard is another hugely promising wine from David Ramey. Exotic in its aromatic profile, with tons of depth, the 2014 is exceptionally beautiful, layered and nuanced. This is a gorgeous and highly nuanced wine with a bright future.”

Ramey Pedregal Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville 2013 750ML ($199.95) $159 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal Vineyard has turned out beautifully. It is also much more accessible young than I expected, despite its considerable size. Bright red stone fruit and pomegranate notes are pushed forward. There is plenty of tannin, but it is nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. There is plenty of stuffing and potential here.”

Wine Spectator 93 points “Vibrant and lacy, with a seamless weave of poached quince, blanched almond, pink grapefruit pith and jasmine notes. This minerally Champagne is finely knit and graceful, offering a firm, focused finish. Drink now through 2029.”
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2006 Côte Grand Cru – Terroir du Mesnil sur Oger offers a striking combination of aromatic nuance, freshness and the natural flavor comlexity of Champagne with some age. Candied lemon peel, hazelnut, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes are front and center in this super-expressive Champagne. The 2006 finishes with notable power and substance. Although not especially deep, the 2006 is absolutely delicious, not to mention a real joy to taste.” (7/2017)

Cadence

Arriving October 31st

[No costumes required]

Cadence is an urban winery based in an industrial warehouse in southern Seattle. Proprietors Ben Smith and Gaye McNutt are former aviation/tech workers whose love for wine inspired them to create their beautiful Bordeaux-style blends. Cadence sources fruit from Red Mountain AVA vineyards such as Ciel du Cheval, Tapteil, and their estate vineyard, Cara Mia. Their envoy includes blends and single-vineyard bottlings; their wines have achieved huge acclaim and earned Cadence a top spot in Washington’s wine scene.

Jeb Dunnuck on the vintage: “these are ripe, sexy wines that still show purity and freshness… this was another “hottest vintage to date,” surpassing even the scorching 2013 vintage. However, the winemakers and growers managed the heat better in 2014 and the wines possess more mid-palate depth, concentration and sweetness to their tannin. This is a terrific vintage for the region—only slightly behind 2012 and 2010, yet a step up over 2013 and 2011.” [Emphasis in original!]

Mulled currants, baking spice, dried earth and dried flower notes all emerge from this full-bodied, gorgeously pure and seamless red that has building tannin and a great, great finish. Give bottles 2-3 years of cellaring and enjoy over the following two decades.”

Cadence Winery Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Red, Columbia Valley 2014 750ML ($47.95) $39 pre-arrival special

It’s medium to full-bodied, elegant and complex on the palate, with sweet tannin and a beautiful finish.”
