The Sparkling Cure for Tariffs: De Venoge 4-6-25

The wine world is reeling from some unsavory news. Many of the wines we know and love from the world’s most classic regions are going to get more expensive after landing on American soil. The situation is uncertain but the power is certainly out of our hands.

I don’t know about you but I need an antidote…something that can reset my palate after one of the toughest disappointments we’ve had to swallow in the business. There can be only one medicine: Champagne. And frankly it better be some of the best Champagne that I can uncork before those tariffs hit.

Vinopolis in this case as in so many is the doctor’s office. With one of the largest and most well stocked Champagne inventories on the West Coast, there are extravagent examples waiting to be opened at pre-tariff pricing. With so many options it can be hard to choose, but take my advice and take a hard look at De Venoge.

De Venoge was established in Champagne in the first part of the 19th century by Swiss born Henri-Marc de Venoge and his son Joseph. Most of the clientele for these wines are Europeans that have followed Champagnes markets closely and hoard the good stuff for private consumption. And truly this is the good stuff. De Venoge sources grapes from some of the top vineyard areas in the region. The Louis XV bottling is sourced exclusively from Grand Cru villages such as Verzenay, Bouzy, Avize, and Le Mesnil. The wines are given extended lees aging to enhance those intoxicating aromas of toasted nuts, brioche, and brûléed lemon. The resulting texture on these bottlings is unfathomably rich with a finish that lingers longer than the amount of time you’ll be able to wait between sips.

Relatively unknown in the United States, these wines are a gateway into the European way of fine living. The bottles themselves are practically sculptures that command a place of significance on the dining table. We don’t know how long these tariffs are going to last, but a case of De Venoge Champagne in your cellar might just enable you to forget the problem entirely. And heck, we’re even putting them on sale for you.

“The assemblage of the 2006 Louis XV Brut Millésimé is about the same as the 1995 and 1996—composed of 50/50 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, all from grand cru villages. The only difference is that the Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger (10% of the assemblage) spent 12 months in oak barrels. Disgorged in January 2017 (dosage: six grams per liter), the 2006 has a golden color and opens with a deep, ripe, elegant and vinous bouquet with toasty and chalky lemon and fresh white fruit flavors. On the palate, this is an intense, round, fresh and complex Louis XV with great purity and finesse. The wine opens on the palate like a soufflé, coating the whole palate without any pressure or weight—gorgeous! This is a delicate and fresh yet well-structured and persistent Louis XV whose intense and long but weightless finish reveals lovely, almost juicy fruit concentration with perfectly integrated freshness and lasting minerality that seems to give additional structure. The 2006 shows a lot of Chardonnay features right now and drinks perfectly today; however, it can be kept under perfect conditions for decades.”

“This is really punchy and broad-shouldered with muscular structure and citrusy undertones. Full body. Lightly tannic and a fresh and vivid finish. This is the first vintage without malolactic fermentation ever. One for the cellar. Better in 2022.”
