Durand: A Northern Rhone Secret

We just received the new 2016’s from the Durands and are very, very impressed.  They’re definitely a producer on the rise and the last two vintages (’15 and ’16) are the best wines they’ve ever produced.  It’s become harder and harder to find this sort of value in the Northern Rhone as the markets locates inefficiencies quicker than ever.  Nevertheless, here we are—these are fantastic bottles at prices far below what comparable St.

Mazzei: Tuscan Overachievers

Mazzei is one of the new leading lights in Tuscany.  Based in the hamlet of Fonterutoli, in Chianti, the ambitious estate has added property in Maremma (on the Tuscan coast) and also even a small property in Sicily.  The one thing that unites all of them is a relentless drive for quality—they want to be known as one of the best in Italy and have made a strong case over recent releases.

Bodegas Hidalgo

Bodegas Hidalgo is a legendary name in sherry, best known for their Manzanilla “La Gitana.” Hidalgo’s cellar is located right on the water in Sanlúcar de Barrameda where the humidty and breeze from the ocean preserves the flor to a much greater extent than in other parts of Sherry country.  The resulting wines have a freshness that defines the house style—everything here is based off of the lightness and elegance of Manzanilla and it shows.

The Remarkable Value Freemark Chard

94 point Chardonnay is a hard thing to do for a reasonable price—especially from Napa.  The 2017 Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Chardonnay is twice as impressive, then, when you taste it and think about the price you paid—less than $22 by the case!  Freemark has been on a roll recently, producing high scoring Napa wines at incredibly fair prices.  They’ve become one of our go-to sources for top quality that won’t break the bank.

Freemark Abbey’s modern era dates back to 1967, when the winery was purchased quickly transformed into one of the most recognized and prestigious wineries in the 70’s and 80’s.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The Best Values in Bordeaux
Come from Tuscany
Top quality Bordeaux keeps going up in price.  It’s a sad, if inevitable truth in the wine world—which led us to wonder “who’s making the best values in truly top-class Bordeaux out there?”  Now, the initial question was directed within Bordeaux, but as we kept throwing out names of Chateaus, the obvious retort would come “well, so-and-so in Tuscany is making better wine, in the same style and it costs $N less.”
