Markus Molitor Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese *** Gold Capsule, Mosel 2017 750ML ($139.95) Was $128, Now $99, 14 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98+ points
“The 2017 Riesling Erdener Treppchen Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is bright and even floral (hyacinths) on the clear, slatey, highly refined but aromatic nose with its precise stone fruit and delicate flinty aromas. Silky, sweet and round, with great finesse, elegance and seamless, perfectly balanced texture, this is a lean but lush, incredibly fine and filigreed Auslese with a long, fresh, piquant and salty finish. A divine Riesling whose acidity is perfectly intermingled with the fruit and texture. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

This was the lowest listed price in the USA today,
Now it’s even lower!

Markus Molitor Kinheimer Hubertuslay Riesling Auslese *** Gold Capsule, Mosel 2017 750ML ($179.95) Was $119, Now $99, 15 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 99 points
“The 2017 Riesling Kinheimer Hubertuslay Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is clear and concentrated, on the deep and complex nose with stewed peach aromas intertwined with spicy notes of a fleeting kiss of oak and nougat. It has a highly elegant, refined and salty-piquant palate with fine grip and mineral tension. This Hubertuslay is rich, lush and sweet, with remarkable concentration but also weightless finesse and a lean, salty-piquant finish that tickles the palate. Lemon chutney flavors intertwined with the crystalline salinity characterize the long finish of this beauty. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Markus Molitor Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese *** Gold Capsule, Mosel 2017 750ML ($169.95) Was $119, Now $99, 18 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 99 points
“Like the Bockstein, the 2017 Riesling Saarburger Rausch Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is also enormously concentrated on the nose, where fine botrytis aromas intermingle with dried apricots, peaches, notes of quince, lime and lemon chutney and even fig mustard. Concentrated and velvety on the viscous palate, this is a pretty sweet but highly refined and salty-piquant Auslese with an enormously long and concentrated finish. This is a wine to be served in 20 or 30 years, unless you like this bigger but balanced style at this early age. The wine seems to be less racy because the acidity is already integrated and provides structure for the sweet, stewed fruit, but it comes back on the finish and reveals the piquancy and precision of an Eiswein with botrytis. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

2017 Produttori del Barbaresco Crus

Arriving in June

Produttori del Barbaresco is revered for producing classically-styled Barbaresco and Riservas of uncompromising quality and transparency. It’s a miracle that these wines are still affordable and available, especially when compared to the skyrocketing prices of Barolo. You’d be hard-pressed to find such consistent quality and complexity out of such an extensive range of single-vineyard Nebbiolos anywhere else.

“Aldo Vacca and his team at the Produttori del Barbaresco cooperative continue to turn out gorgeous wines that deliver a remarkable combination of quality and value…” –Antonio Galloni, Vinous

“[Produttori del Barbaresco is] one of the most important and quality-minded co-operatives in the world…” –Jeb Dunnuck

“I’ve written this many times before, but it bears repeating: Produttori del Barbaresco is one of Italy’s ultimate values for your money.” –Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Arriving in June from Produttori del Barbaresco:

Produttori del Barbaresco Asili, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2017 750ML ($99.95) $89 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 95 points
“The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is a real stand out. It captures all the sensuality of the year while retaining the translucence and freshness of Nebbiolo. Rose petal, crushed red berry fruit, cinnamon and spice develop with a bit of coaxing. This is another gorgeous wine from the Produttori. Asili is widely regarded as one of the best vineyards in Barbaresco, maybe the best. This wine shows why.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

Produttori del Barbaresco Montefico, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2017 750ML ($99.95) $89 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 95 points
“The 2017 Barbaresco Montefico is one of the stand-outs in this range. It shows the piercing tannins typical of this site, and yet has more than enough fruit to balance those tannins, certainly moreso than wines like the Rabajà. This exposed site benefits from cooling winds from the north, clearly a benefit in 2017. Even in the early going, the balance here is terrific. In 2017, the Montefico is one of the clear stand outs in the range.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

Produttori del Barbaresco Montestefano, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2017 750ML ($89.95) $75 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 93+ points
“The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is a potent, savory wine. Today, the fruit is very much in the background. A brooding, backward Barbaresco, the Montestefano clearly needs time, it is a somber, imposing Barbaresco. Dark plum, earthiness, cloves, menthol and licorice infuse the finish with notable gravitas. There’s plenty of Montestefano breadth and resonance.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

Produttori del Barbaresco Muncagota, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2017 750ML ($89.95) $71.90 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 92 points
“The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is one of the lighter wines in this range. Floral and medium in body, the 2017 gives the impression of a wine that will open earlier than some of the others. It, too, has pretty imposing tannins though, so a few years in bottle are advisable. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherry, mint and white pepper linger.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2017 750ML ($99.95) $85 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 94 points
“The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a heady, explosive wine. I don’t think I have ever tasted an Ovello from the Produttori with this much heft. The strong mineral and saline accents typical of this site are present, but they are matched pound for pound by notable mid-palate richness and intensity in its fruit. The 2017 is a brooding powerhouse that needs time to unwind.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

Produttori del Barbaresco Pora, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2017 750ML ($89.95) $75 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 93 points
“The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is rich, creamy and layered, with a bit more generosity than is typically the case. Sweet red cherry, red plum, spice and rose petal are amplified in a radiant, open-knit Barbaresco that will start drinking well in a few years’ time.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

Produttori del Barbaresco Rabajà, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2017 750ML ($99.95) $85 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 94 points
“The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is a potent, searingly tannic wine that will need a few years to come together. Brooding and backward, even for young Rabajà, the 2017 is painfully young today. It will be interesting to see what time brings. Today, the 2017 is a real powerhouse. Black fruit, menthol, licorice, melted road tar, game and menthol develop in the glass, but only with great reluctance.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

Produttori del Barbaresco Rio Sordo, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2017 750ML ($89.95) $75 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 93 points
“The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo shows the natural intensity of the year, and yet retains a good bit of the aromatic lift that is so typical of Nebbiolo at its best. Silky, perfumed and poised, the Rio Sordo is impressive in this tasting. Spice and floral notes lift a core of red-toned fruit in this mid-weight yet packed Barbaresco from the Produttori. This has very fine potential.”

Decanter 96 points
“Aromatic notes of dried sage and rosemary combined with juicy, ripe red cherries, tar and red roses. Silky, ripe, approachable, with a great fine-grained tannic structure. Nominated by Justin Knock MW. Wines of the Year 2021: the top Classic wines. Drinking Window 2022 – 2040.”
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2017 Barbaresco shows just how appealing this vintage can be. In 2017, the warm, dry growing season gave the Barbaresco an extra kick of richness that fills out its frame and adds so much immediacy. Sweet red berry fruit, cinnamon, rose petal and mint are open in the glass, but it is the wine’s seductive radiance that wins the day. Pora, Ovello, Montestefano, Muncagota and Rio Sordo are the main vineyards used for the straight Barbaresco. The 2017 is such an inviting and expressive wine. Don’t miss it!”
Wine & Spirits 94 points “The Produttori del Barbaresco lost about 20 percent of their crop in the 2017 growing season due to frost and hail in the spring and a long drought in the summer, but what remained gave a fresh and exuberant wine packed with flavors of vibrant red cherry and zesty notes of orange peel. The Produttori typically offer one of the best quality-price ratios for Barbaresco, and the exciting 2017 version is no exception.”

Goodfellow Pinot Gris Whistling Ridge Vineyard, Ribbon Ridge 2020 750ML ($21.95) $19 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Winery note
“Whistling Ridge Vineyard sits ridge-top in the western edge of the Ribbon Ridge AVA. -The vines catch the daily winds that blow in, slowing ripening, evaporating moisture, and cooling fruit. Shallow soils are eroded from uplifted marine sedimentary rock, 40 to 50 million years old, and dry out quickly in the growing season. No-till farming forces the non-irrigated vines to grow roots deep in search of water. Richard Alvord and Patricia Gustafson planted, and have farmed the vineyard for the past two and a half decades.”

Kelley Fox Wines Freedom Hill Vineyard Pinot Blanc, Willamette Valley 2021 750ML ($39.95) $31.90 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“This wine was produced from the storied Freedom Hill Vineyard in Dallas (bordering the Eola-Hills A.V.A.) and was planted, owned and farmed by the Dusschee family. The soil here is Bellpine, a marine sedimentary silt clay loam that is well-drained. The Pinot blanc was whole cluster-pressed after picking. It settled in tank for a couple of days before racking and this year, after primary, it was racked to neutral Burgundy oak barrels (228L). No new wood. This wine is dry and ML-complete. The colour is a highly transparent, brilliant pale, and youthful lemon-yellow. The nose is full of delicate citrus, peach, and floral tones with hints of sea-fresh salinity and powdery minerals, and to date, extends quite a bit beyond the glass. The texture is light on its feet but has lovely heft like fine silver does. The mouth is much like the nose and has wonderful acidity. This Pinot blanc is very clean on the palate, and long. There is a balance and serenity to this wine that I love.”

California

Arnot-Roberts Vare Vineyard Ribolla Gialla, Napa Valley 2020 750ML ($59.95) $47 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 93 points
“The 2020 Ribolla Gialla Vare Vineyard is super-elegant, savory and nuanced. In 2020, the Ribolla has a bit more edginess than in most years, probably a combination of the natural character of Ribolla, early bottling and the early personality of the year. I like the aromatics quite a bit, though. This needs time in bottle. There is plenty of energy.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

Arnot-Roberts Montecillo Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Valley 2019 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 98 points
“The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard is a headspinning wine. Rich, dense and explosive, the 2019 captures all the pedigree of this great site. Readers will find a towering, statuesque Cabernet of the highest level. Graphite, leather, dried herbs, menthol and licorice play off a core of intense, dark fruit. Potent, muscular tannins need time to soften, but, wow, what a wine. Best of all, the Montecillo is one of the most insane values readers will find in elite California Cabernet Sauvignon. I would be thrilled to own it.”

France – Champagne

Jérôme Prévost La Closerie Fac-Simile Extra Brut Rosé, Champagne NV 750ML ($749.95) $699 special, 1 bottle in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 97+ points
“The NV Extra Brut Rosé Fac-similie (LC19) has tightened up a little in the last six months—no surprise, given this vintage’s prodigious concentration. Unwinding in the glass with notes of red berries, rose petals, musky peach and orange oil, it’s full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with a deep core of fruit, tangy acids and a rich but tightly wound profile. This is a fabulous rendition of Fac-similie that is built for the long haul.”

France – Rhône

Pierre Gonon Saint-Joseph Rouge, Rhône 2019 750ML ($219.95) $179 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 96 points
“Moving to the flagship, the 2019 Saint Joseph got a big “wow” in my notes, and this is the finest wine I’ve tasted from these hard-working brothers. Awesome red and black fruits, ground pepper, and hints of game and meatiness all emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied on the palate, with perfect balance, silky tannins, and one heck of a finish. This brilliant Saint Joseph is one of the top wines in the appellation and can be enjoyed any time over the coming 15 years.”
Decanter 95 points “Deeply aromatic with violets and Kalamata olives, it’s wildly resinous with a touch of black cherry. Medium- to full-bodied, it’s more concentrated and fresher than most Saint-Josephs this year. It has the classic depth and texture of Gonon’s Saint-Joseph, thick and alive, like a jungle. Very long finish with a floral lift. A big vintage here – increasingly the norm. Better freshness and lower alcohol heat than most in 2019. Drinking Window 2023 – 2030.”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 94+ points “Gonon’s 2019 Saint Joseph retains the typical floral signature on the nose, but it is more dark-fruited than usual, with notes of black cherries, blackberries and even black olives. It’s medium to full-bodied, the first vintage recorded over 14% alcohol, according to Jean Gonon (14.2%). Concentrated, rich and velvety in feel, it boasts a long, gently chewy finish and should age well.”

Saint Cosme Côte Rôtie, Rhône 2019 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 95-97 points
“Not destemmed and just pure, old school Côte Rôtie, the 2019 Côte Rôtie offers a monster bouquet of ground pepper, blackberries, smoked earth, graphite, and assorted darker, meaty red and black fruits. Gorgeous on the palate as well, it’s medium to full-bodied and flawlessly balanced, with ripe, present tannins and a killer finish. It has a little Jamet-like wild, classic character and is going to benefit from 7-8 years of bottle age.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “A racy, high-pitched, mineral-driven style, with raspberry and damson plum coulis notes pierced with savory and sanguine accents. The long, tight-grained, iron-edged finish resonates. Best from 2022 through 2034.”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 95 points “Big florals and raspberries mark the nose of Saint Cosme’s 2019 Cote Rotie. Hints of stems show through, and this wine clearly would benefit from a few years in the cellar, but it is far from being unapproachable. Normally a blend of several lieux-dits, it sees about 30% new oak in its élevage, but the wood is scarcely noticeable. Medium to full-bodied, creamy and supple on the palate, with a long, fruit-infused finish, this should age gracefully for a decade or more.”

Saint Cosme Crozes-Hermitage, Rhône 2019 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 33 bottles in stock now
Grapelive 94 points
“I am a huge fan of Louis Barroul’s negociant line of Northern Rhone bottlings, which seem, as I say almost every year, to get better with each new release. I especially love this Crozes-Hermitage bottling. The latest Saint Cosme Crozes-Hermitage, with its seductive purple/ruby hue, opens up with crushed violets and dark berries on the nose, leading to a full bodied palate of boysenberry, damson plum, blueberry fruits, along with light earthy notes, anise, cedar and olive tapenade. There is a purity flavors in this 2019, along with good acidity and well-judged tannic structure that hold things in taut detail, making for a beautifully crafted wine. The year provided good ripeness for a graceful mouth feel that is impressive for this appellation. This wine is a stunning value, delivering all the best that this grape has to offer. Barruol sources his Crozes-Hermitage from the granite hillsides of Gervans and Erôme, just behind Hermitage hill, noting himself that the wines are often quite similar to those of Hermitage, which explains why I can’t get enough of it. Going on, he adds that where these Syrah grapes are grown, it could almost be a unique appellation in its own right, because there is a huge difference within the terroirs of Crozes-Hermitage and this area is very different from the flatter sections. Saint Cosme, located in Gigondas, is famous for their estate and single terroir bottlings of Gigondas, which are maybe some of the greatest Grenache based wines on the planet. The property which dates back to 1416 was acquired Barruol’s ancestors back in 1570, and at the end of the sixteenth century they built a splendid residence over those ancient cellars. Château de Saint Cosme, which is on the 14th generation, is an exceptional and historical winery, with its Gallo-Roman fermentation vats perfectly preserved it lives and breathes with that connection to the past… I find the harmony in this wine almost perfect… The energy and roundness gives this wine a luxurious feel, but doesn’t take away Syrah’s natural funk and savory tones. This impresses me every time I take a sip and makes this a crowd pleasing wine. Again, I love these Northern Rhone negociant offerings from Saint Cosme almost as much their legendary Gigondas, especially this Crozes, which is a stunning value. If you’ve not had these wines now is a great time to explore them!”

France – Loire

Very few estates can count winemaking generations in the double digits. Like Louis Barruol of Saint Cosme, siblings Emmanuel and Laurie Caslot are the 14th generation to helm their family’s ancient estate (their sister, Stéphanie Caslot, passed away in 2021). They craft profound examples of Cabernet Franc that are intimately tied to the land they farm biodynamically.

Domaine de la Chevalerie Bourgueil Bretêche, Loire 2015 750ML ($37.95) $31.90 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“An explosion of fruity deliciousness with very pure aromas of cherries, red currants and black currants. Of energy and great pleasure. A chalky and crunchy mouth effectively supported by lovely bitter and smoky notes. A wine that loudly proclaims where it comes from given a few hours in the carafe. “
Importer note “Bretêche is an old word referring to a window or entrance to a fortified building, often above a gate to enable defenders to rain arrows or what have you upon attackers. It can also refer to entrances and exits in general, and this particular vineyard grows on the edge of the Restigné commune, where a road comes in. Pierre Caslot planted his parcel between 1988 and 1992 after his wife inherited the rights to rent it from her family. They farm just over 13 acres here. The soils are young limestone and a little clay, and this makes for a long, more linear wine than Galichets or Chevalerie, one with evident stony aromatics, lift and focus given by the limestone.”

Domaine de la Chevalerie Bourgueil Galichets, Loire 2015 750ML ($34.95) $29 special, 36 bottles in stock now
John Gilman 93+ points
“The 2015, which is the current release, offers up a superb, precise bouquet of red and black cherries, cigar wrapper, a touch of tree bark, a beautiful base of gravelly soil tones, a hint of juniper berry and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is pure, complex and full-bodied, with a rock solid core of fruit, excellent mineral drive, ripe, buried tannins and a long, vibrant and complex finish. I love the “cool fruit” profile of this wine, which even in the hot summer of 2015 comes in at a svelte thirteen percent octane. This is simply an outstanding young Bourgueil!”
Importer note “A 25-acre vineyard heading down the terrace toward the river that is planted on stony, sandy clay soils (the limestone bedrock is at least three feet below the surface and typically more). The oldest vines in Galichets date from 1934. A part of that plantation was replanted in the 1970s and 80s, with yet another small section replanted in the 1990s. The siblings are beginning to replant some of the oldest vines now, bringing the average age of this vineyard to 35-40 years of age. Galichets tends to make the domain’s spiciest and fruitiest wine, underpinned by a dark sappiness.”

The “bistro” wine of the bunch, easy-drinking with crushed berry notes. Serve lightly chilled with just about any food you can think of. Like all of the estate’s wines, this is farmed biodynamically.
Domaine de la Chevalerie Bourgueil ‘Diptyque’, Loire 2018 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Winery note
“From alluvial terraces, a supple and sweet wine, giving soft tannins. A wine to share, a wine of friendship, ‘A sporty wine’, to be tasted anytime, anywhere. Quite simply a wine to give pleasure.”
Importer note “This is the domain’s vin de soif, made from vines growing in gravelly, sandy, and clay-sandy soils. The élevage is a short four to six months in concrete vats with, sometimes, a small proportion done in older barrels. Light maceration—the intent is to have an easy, supple wine. Diptyque is ancient Greece referring to two panels linked together. In painting, this is two panels linked; in music, an oeuvre in two parts. Here, with wine, it is a cuvée made with sun and soil.”

Italy – Tuscany

Cerbaia Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 93+ points
“The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is a dark and rich expression with a generous delivery of dark fruit—prune, plum and black cherry. The vines are planted in galestro soils with clay and shale in a 3.5-hectare plot, resulting in a 14,000-bottle production. Winemaking is simple, with fermentation in steel and aging in botte grande for three years. There is some extra density or heaviness to the fruit that feels reinforced by the oak notes and ultimately by the wine’s tannins. This wine will be released in April 2021, and that sounds about right because it needs more time.”
Jeb Dunnuck 93 points “The 2016 Cerbaia is lifted with notes of raspberry, sour cherry, thyme, and dusty earth. The palate is brisk with fresh red fruits and tea leaf, while structured with lingering tannin and driving acidity. It needs time to loosen its grip and will be welcome over several years to come. It was aged for three years in large Slavonian oak and is sourced from Cerbaia’s largest vineyard, planted in 1989. Drink 2025-2036.”
Eric Guido-Vinous 92 points “Red licorice, dried roses, a dusting of cedar and black cherry form up to create the deeply alluring bouquet of the 2016 Cerbaia Brunello di Montalcino. It’s silky in testure with a sweet-and-sour expression of red berry fruits and minerals, all guided by zesty acids, as grippy tannins form toward the close. Hints of mocha, brown spice and purple inner florals linger over a coating of youthful structure.”

Rainy Day Reds

Forecast calls for cool weather and rain around Portland this week, which means we’ll be popping reds for the foreseeable future. Explore some drink-now options that are in stock now!

This vineyard was recently sold to famed Burgundy producer Meo-Camuzet. While they’re making fine examples under the Nicolas-Jay label, don’t miss your last chance to try Marcus Goodfellow’s rendition from this ungrafted, dry-farmed site. In many respects, this may be some of Marcus Goodfellow’s finest work (with a vineyard he’s been making wine from since 2008).  Due to the generosity of the 2014 vintage, this wine is pretty approachable now (though it loves a decant) but it should age effortlessly for 15-20 years.

Goodfellow Family Cellars Bishop Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton 2014 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, only 24 bottles available
Josh Raynolds 91 points
“Vivid red. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes fresh red berries, cherry, candied flowers and musky earth, backed by a touch of smokiness. Lively black raspberry and floral pastille flavors pick up hints of bitter chocolate and licorice with aeration. The clinging, focused finish features fine-grained, slow-mounting tannins and repeating floral character. Give this one a little air time.”
Grapelive 91 points “Delicately layered and spicy, the 2014 Bishop Creek is a pretty effort, especially for a richer vintage in Oregon. Made by Marcus Goodfellow, the ex-Evesham Wood and Westrey man, [he] is coming into his own as a talent, inspired by Doerner of Cristom and John Paul of Cameron. You can see the style showing through here. Bishop Creek, planted to Pommard and Wadenswil (old Swiss clone), [is] now owned by Nicolas Meo of the famed Burgundy Domaine Meo-Camuzet. [The vineyard] ([which is] not far from Shea Vineyards) formed this wine with its distinct strawberry and racy red cherry core along with the mixed spice, mineral tones and light wood influence. Its southern exposure and Willakenzie soils (dark rocky marine sediment) give warmth and grace. Planted in 1988, the vines ripen without flamboyant extraction, allowing more finesse to show through. At 13.9% this medium weight wine offers fine detail, opulence and restrained, almost earthy, soulfulness. Hints of bitter herb, cedar and candied citrus rind add a tangy note to the whole and the finish echoes the red fruits in subtle fashion with a touch of wilted roses lingering on. It shines right now, though best to enjoy it with cuisine to match as it is a tad shier than other 2014 Oregon Pinots (I’ve tried) and needs time and coaxing to reach its beautiful peak. Best from 2018 to 2022.”
Winery note “Twenty five year old un-grafted Wadensville vines, dry farmed in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA are handpicked for this wine. From 3 acres, each clone is fermented separately with native yeasts in small lots, typically with 50-60% whole-clusters. The wine is aged in 0%-40% new French oak barrels for 18-21 months and bottled unfined and unfiltered. There is intensity at Bishop Creek, with deep, dark toned fruit, a spicy floral edge and savory tones with acidity and length.”

Charles Smith is best known for his K Vintners Syrahs. But this Cab Sauv is no slouch and its medium to full-body makes it a fab choice at table. It won’t overwhelm food, and it sure won’t underwhelm you.

Substance ‘Cs’ Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley 2019 750ML ($19.95) $14.50 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Case-12 Substance ‘Cs’ Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley 2019 750ML ($239.95) $156 special (that’s only $13/bottle!)
Jeb Dunnuck 92 points
“Juicy blue fruits, leafy tobacco, violets, and orange blossom notes all emerge from the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Cs and it’s medium to full-bodied, has a beautifully balanced, fruit-forward style, no hard edges, and a great finish. It’s no simple fruit bomb and has notable structure, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It reminds me of a top Cru Bourgeois from Bordeaux and represents a stunning value. Drink it over the coming 7-8 years.”

The combination of rich soil, high elevation and generous Tuscan weather creates a level of ripeness that is almost Napa Valley-esque but with the quintessential Italian rusticity and character. The Tuscan character especially manifests after extensive bottle age, with the house intentionally withholding a portion of every vintage for later release as a library wine.

Monica Larner – Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2008 Arcanum is a monumental achievement and my favorite wine in an already impossibly impressive collection. The blend sees Cabernet Franc (77%), Merlot and a very small part of Cabernet Sauvignon. Like many Tuscany growers, Tenuta di Arceno is betting on Cabernet Franc’s performance in the warmer corners of Tuscany. The integration here is absolutely beautiful and the wine glides smoothly over the palate with the perfect balance of extraction, glycerin, residual sugar and acidity. The aromas span the spectrum, from bright cherry to dark chocolate. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030.”

A 100% Syrah blockbuster, this gives Chapoutier’s own Hermitage wines a run for the money.

Wine Advocate 98 points
“As always, the 100% Syrah 2015 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Lesquerde Rectificando Invenies (Ri) shows more minerality than the VIT release and offers blockbuster styled aromas and flavors of blackcurrants, crushed rocks, toasted bread and chocolate. Made in a voluptuous, pedal-to-the-metal style, with huge fruit and texture, it has building tannin and an uber sexy, incredibly layered and decadent palate. Drink it anytime over the coming decade. This Cuvée was completely destemmed and aged 18 months in demi-muids.”

Sette Ponti makes some of the finest Super Tuscans out there. While they’re best known for Oreno, their top-end bottling, the wine of note in most years is their value-priced Crognolo. Made with every bit the same care as the flashier Oreno, Crognolo’s Sangiovese dominant blend provides a beautiful drink-now option at less than half the price of the flagship wine.

“Sweet berries, flowers and cedar on the nose. Some leather, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with lightly chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Shows tension and brightness. Excellent structure. Drinkable now, but better in 2023.”

“Chateau de Chantegrive was created in 1966 by Henri and Françoise Lévêque thanks to the sale of their [apparently very precious] stamp collection.  Vineyards were cobbled together by purchasing several parcels in the beautiful and picturesque southern Graves, primarily near the village of Podensac.  Aside from its truly beautiful setting, the perfectly-situated south-facing vines are surrounded by a low stone wall and soak up sun on warm summer days.  Terroir is a mix of gravel, sand, limestone, and there are small, quartz stones in the soil – former river stones ranging in color from pink to beige throughout the vineyard’s fine sandy soil.  In true Graves fashion, Chantegrive’s vineyards are exceptionally suited – and planted to – reds and whites.  While red vines are planted to an even split of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, for the white, vines are planted to interestingly enough, an even split again 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Semillon.  This exceptional blend from 30+ year average vines offers immense pleasure and complexity.

“While relatively young (by Bordeaux standards), this estate has developed an undeniably strong reputation for reliable quality; wines are expertly blended, elegant, refined, and impressively complex.  Especially when properly aged a few years…” –Importer note

Aged Riesling Perspective with Mosel Fine Wines

2012 – Ten Years On

“The 2012 wines proved bright, refreshing, and open for business. The not overly hot vintage led to wines with typical Mosel Riesling flavors including grapefruit, peach, freshly cut apple, and smoke. The bright acidity made the wines hugely appealing young. Many growers compared the vintage with such classics as 2004, 2002, 1993, or 1975 … and for good reasons: at the top, everything screamed “classic” in 2012. Their classic brightness made for quite some immediate appeal with the public. Unsurprisingly, the appeal and classic nature of 2012 proved an instant hit with wine lovers who were looking forward to such a vintage since almost a decade (2008 being the exception). The low yields added to the public’s early buying into the vintage.” –Mosel Fine Wines, May 2022

Weingut Eugen Muller Forster Kirchenstuck Riesling Auslese, Pfalz 2012 500ML ($34.95) $24 special, 36+ 500ml-bottles in stock now
Terry Theise
“Every year for the last fifteen or more, this wine has been a masterpiece, and I can think of few if any parallels in the wine world- or in my wine world- of such sustained stellar performance year after year. 2011 is and remains a masterpiece of the exotic flowery style, ‘a city made of cherry blossom’ as I wrote last year. Bearing in mind that these wines are never very sweet, this one is more typical for the ‘Auslese’ idiom. The 2012, though, is a swollen subterranean wave of mineral. You start at OMG and end with WTF, because even in the context of so many great years this is singular and amazing. Fantastically salty and cherry-blossomy, with obdurate length and deeply embedded mineral.”

Weingut Jos. Christoffel Jr. Erdener Pralat Riesling Auslese *** Goldkapsel, Mosel 2012 750ML ($89.95) $79 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 96 points
“[Reviewed May 2022] The 2012er Erdener Prälat Riesling Auslese *** (with a golden capsule) offers a hugely captivating and ripe nose of candy floss, butter cream, lemon curd, Victoria sweet pineapple, honeyed yellow peach, minty herbs, candied grapefruit, passion fruit, and elderflower. The wine proves amply rich and creamy on the aromatic and exotic palate. Candy floss, fresh apricot, candied citrusy fruits, and honey lead to great focus and precision on the mid-palate and in the hugely long and layered finish. Despite all the smoothness at play, the wine is airy and even light. There is a sort of magic balance between ripeness and finesse here. What a great Prälat Auslese! Now-2062.”

“Rich golden yellow. Rich aromas of strawberry, pear nectar and nut oils, with a very subtle splash of brown spice botrytis. Tropical fruit essences and wet stone salts melt together on the creamy palate. More concentrated than the two other ausleses, showing a distinct honey-spiced personality. Incredibly rich and long on the finish, this is my call for the finest auslese of the vintage.” ST

“More reductive on the nose than the Himmelreich Auslese Gold Capsule, the 2012 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule (AP #19 13) combines its deeper mineral character with a perfect expression of highly noble botrytis. The finish is piquant and firm and also more grippy and stringent due to the reductive style. The wine lacks the finesse and elegance of the Himmelreich at the moment, but is provided with the density and complexity for a long flight over the years.”

Wine Enthusiast 94 points
“Top 100 Cellar Selection in 2015. Pristine apple, pear and peach are marked with hints of nuts and crushed stones in this sprightly yet deeply complex auslese. It’s lacy and sheer on the palate, yet lime and lemon tones are bracing. Hold till 2020 to allow the subtleties to intensify. -Anna Lee C. Iijima”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93+ points “The 2012 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese (AP #10 13) opens with delicate peach, ripe apricot and orange flavors on the nose. Quite sweet, lush and fruit intense, though still pure and delicate on the palate, this peachy flavored wine finishes with a piquant and racy acidity. Aromatically less complex at the moment compared to the Sonnenuhr from Wehlen or the Himmelreich from Graach, but this fine and pure wine just needs some years.”

“($54) Pale golden yellow. Rich bouquet of candied apricot, ginger and nut oil. Succulently juicy pineapple and crisp slate animate the supple, creamy texture. The seductive finish is only slightly sweet. Boasts excellent balance and considerable promise.”

Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Vinothek Riesling, Wachau 2002 750ML ($219.95) $179 special, 12 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 98 points
“At first deep, dark and mysterious. Just like the Nikolaihof cellar, where this dry riesling spent 16 years in barrel. Then, a minty freshness develops that leaps out of the glass at you. By some miracle, it manages to taste ancient and lively at once. The finish is very long with great herbal complexity. From biodynamically grown grapes. Demeter certified. Drink or hold.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94+? points “From the Weingebirge and bottled in July 2018 after 16 years in oak, the 2002 Riesling Vinothek is deep and complex on the elegant and spicy nose that doesn’t reveal any classic Riesling aromas but rather the coolish vintage (“flood vintage”) and the long elevage in a traditional 60-hectoliter foudre. Crystalline and refined on the palate, this is an elegant, highly complex and vital yet still firm and initially even tannic and astringent wine that needs lots of patience. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.”

Weingut Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Beerenauslese, Nahe 2011 375ML ($199.95) $149 special, 5 half-bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 96 points
“Intriguingly musky and subtly fungal as well as piercing in its evocation of distilled pit fruits and botanicals, the nose of Donnhoff’s 2011 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Beerenauslese – which was picked alongside its Auslese counterpart – promises an intense palate experience that the wine very much delivers. Distilled extracts of wormwood, woodruff and anisette; maraschino and serviceberry seem to lace the amalgam of quince jelly with pear and white peach nectars in a lusciously multi-layered yet animated palate performance. A spicy and tropical suggestion of mango chutney compounds the vibrantly penetrating effect of pungent herbal and pit fruit essences in a tonsil-gripping, mouth-shaking finish.”
