The Astonishing Wines of Marc Colin

Founded in 1970 in St. Aubin, Domaine Marc Colin produces mostly white wines sourced from holdings in Chassagne, Puligny, and Santenay, and – of course – St. Aubin.  Their wines have earned respect and acclaim for their purity and elegance. Now under the direction of Marc’s children, John, Damien, and Caroline (the eldest, Pierre-Yves, left in 2005 to establish his own estate affectionately abbreviated to PYCM), Domaine Marc Colin has reached the upper echelon of Burgundy.

Most of their production is white, the vast majority being Chardonnay. The estate works over 45 acres of vines, including in the Grand Cru vineyards of Montrachet and Batard-Montrachet.

Emrich-Schonleber

Despite the fame and renown of the estate inside Germany, Emrich-Schonleber of the Nahe region is not well known in the USA. The wines are spectacular—every bit the equal of Dönnhoff, their main competition in the Nahe. This is the producer that inspired Stephan Bitterolf to open Vom Boden, the mostly-German wine importer best known for (enthusiastically) importing the superstar producer Keller.

Father and son team Werner and Frank Schönleber work with awe-inspiring sites, the most prominent being Halenberg and Frühlingsplätzchen. Both are unusually steep for the Nahe—they have slopes of up to 70%. Halenberg is as you’d dream for the Nahe—a mixture of blue slate (like in the Mosel) and quartz.

Cascina delle Rose & Ca’ del Baio

We’re featuring two fan-favorite Barbaresco estates on our three-day sale starting now. Cascina delle Rose and Ca’ del Baio are both family-owned estates releasing traditionally-styled, environmentally-minded wines of depth, character, and nuance.

Cascina delle Rose flies under the radar for most, but crafts charming and soulful wines that are easy to love, drink, and enjoy. The wines strive for beauty, achieving soaring aromatics and beguiling textures—and are surprisingly age-worthy for such ethereal bottlings.

The Rizzolio family purchased the estate in the 1940s, but didn’t produce commercial releases until the 1980s when the vines were mature enough to offer consistent and complex crops.
