Tucked in the upper Mosel, north of the more famous Mittelmosel, is the village of Thörnich. Wines here have a more Saar-like profile with structured, tense wines. Here, the Ludes family have crafted wines in the same style since Hermann founded in the estate in the 1950s. In the Grand Cru vineyard, Ritsch, the family crafts wines uninfluenced by modern preferences for ripe and plush wines. Instead, the wines are, as importer Stephen Bitterolf of Vom Boden puts it, “rustic, transparent, bracing – even a touch brutal” that speak in a “faceted, crystalline and largely mineral-and-earth driven language.”
 
They bottle by parcel and most of their holdings are old, ungrafted parcels.

Staff Favorite Rosé from Torre dei Beati
 
Torre dei Beati’s ‘Rosa-ae’ is made in the cerasuolo style of rosé from Montepulciano d’Abruzzo grapes that’s traditional to the region. A staff favorite every year, we love it for its bold, easy-drinking style with surprising layers of complexity. Its name is derived from the Italian word for cherry and certainly lives up to that in both color and primary flavors. There’s an entire spectrum of red fruit, tropical fruit, and spices on display with a savory acid structure knitting everything together beautifully on the finish.  2024 is one of the finest vintages to date, offering a perfect pairing with richer summer foods, such as grilled meats and veggies, or spicy dishes like Thai and Chinese.

GD Vajra: Barolo Born of Family 7-6-25

The Vajra family embodies the beauty of the Langhe and the inseperable human history of its wines and culture. Founded in 1972 by Aldo Vajra, this estate was born out of a young man’s desire to reconnect with his family’s roots. At a time when many were leaving the countryside, Aldo went the other direction—back to his grandparents’ farm in Vergne, near Barolo village, to embrace a life of viticulture and stewardship. Today, with his wife Milena and their children Giuseppe, Isidoro, and Francesca fully involved, GD Vajra has become one of Piedmont’s most respected family-run estates.

GD Vajra’s Barolos are known for their purity, aromatics, and classical structure. The wines walk a line between tradition and clarity, blending long macerations and aging in large Slavonian oak with a modern sensibility toward freshness and finesse.
