Petrolo
German Vintage Guide: 2017
Grape of the Week: Barbera

Wine As Art:

Petrolo

In 2011, Italy approved one of Tuscany’s newest appellations: the Val d’Arno di Sopra (also written as Valdarno di Sopra). The quality of the region has been known for centuries: in 1715, a Medici duke decreed it one of only four regions notable for its high-quality wine grapes.

Petrolo is the most notable producer of these wines, drawing inspiration from ancient traditions of their regions and their belief that great wine is “nature as dreamed by man.” Petrolo’s wines provide a wonderful introduction to this undervalued corner of Tuscany due to both their quality, but also thanks to their forward-thinking. Their impressive single-vineyard wine, Bòggina, the wine and the name of the vineyard planted in 1952, is 100% Sangiovese.

Carl Loewen

While the Mosel is best known for its sweet Rieslings, some of the finest producers craft dry and barely off-dry bottlings. If you’re looking for powerful expressions from old vines, look no further than Carl Loewen.

Loewen’s holdings include some of the oldest vines in the entire Mosel. His aim is to preserve these cherished parcels, returning them to their historic esteem and often elevating them to new heights. The wines are textural, rich and complex, often from ancient, ungrafted parcels. But the real magic behind these staff-favorite Rieslings are their low prices, reminding us that there is still value to be found in one of Europe’s most hallowed vineyard lands.

Top Notch Wines from the Top of Burgundy

Marsannay

At the very north of Burgundy is the village of Marsannay. Once overlooked in favor of its more famous neighbors, such as Nuits-St-Georges or Gevrey-Chambertin, interest in Marsannay has grown as its neighbors’ prices climb and climate change brings much-needed warmth to Marsannay. These wines are achieving more weight and impact, making Marsannay great source for value without sacrificing complexity.

Though Pinot Noir is by far the most common variety, Chardonnay is also produced. Historically, Gamay and Aligoté were the most common varieties and rosé the dominate style. Because of this, no Grand Cru or Premier Cru vineyards were designated, though Clos du Roy and Les Longeroies are under consideration for Premier Cru status.

Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2022 Pinot Noir is kaleidoscopic on the nose, mixed berry jam and rosewater giving way to accents of tangerine peel, cola, woodsmoke and aniseed. The medium-bodied palate is bursting with spicy flavors, and a streak of iron-like character adds to its complexity. It’s structured by silky tannins and refreshing acidity and has a long, layered finish.”
