Arterberry Maresh & Tan Fruit

As the third-generation in his family to make wine, Jim crafts Grand Cru-level Willamette Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Arterberry Maresh’s prized position in the Dundee Hills. His releases are praised by critics praise as “are some of the most impressive wines I’ve tried anywhere—not just in the US”, per Erin Brooks of the Wine Advocate. These are benchmark wines for the region that somehow capture Jim’s easy-going yet seriously-nerdy-under-the-skin personality.

That dualistic charm is doubled in in experimental side project, Tan Fruit. Now, you could assume that the wines are throwaway gags not meant to see the light of day, but leave it to Jim to make his side project a points-sweeping EVENT. Wine Advocate gushed over the first releases from 2019, granting the wines top marks for Oregon whites in the vintage, and subsequent releases have been equally praised.

Tan Fruit expertly explores different vineyard sources, winemaking techniques, and picking dates, while mixing barrel and steel, malo- and non-, from the Columbia Valley to Umpqua. It’s like he followed every possible path of a flowchart and made each result delicious.

Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The Dupee Chardonnay was barrel fermented and matured for 10 months in 25% new French oak. It opens with youthful flinty character that gives way to alluring scents of white peach, brioche and meringue. The light-bodied palate features dynamic flavors of ripe citrus and saline, honey and nuts. Its satiny texture is structured by tense, linear acidity, and it has a long, mineral-driven finish. It will be long lived in the cellar.”

Tan Fruit Eyrie Vineyard Chardonnay, Dundee Hills 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 98 points
“Tight and reserved, showcasing the depth of 55-year-old chardonnay vines from Eyrie Vineyard, one of the oldest existing plantings in Willamette, dating back to 1968. A mineral-driven, umami-rich profile with wet leaves, subtle quince, sesame seeds and hints of tangerines. Structured and compact, with a phenolic tension and a savory, earthy, clay-like character. There’s a lot going on in this wine. It is pure, full and very long. Needs time to fully unfold. Whole-cluster pressed. Better from 2027.”

Tan Fruit Maresh Vineyard Chardonnay, Dundee Hills 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $54.50, that’s $51.78 at 5% off and $49.05 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2022 Chardonnay Maresh Vineyard comes from a block of Dijon clone vines planted in 1991 in the Dundee Hills on a steep, south-facing slope at 675 feet of elevation. Barrel fermented and matured for 10 months in 15% new French oak, plus four months in stainless steel, it’s reminiscent of Chablis and boasts exceptionally pure aromas. It opens with flint and petrichor before blossoming to apricot, elderflower liqueur, lime peel and hazelnuts. The palate is vibrant and silky with understated layers of creamy, peachy fruit, and its linear acidity and flinty tones come together for a shimmery finish. For several days after it’s opened, the Maresh Vineyard becomes more and more expressive, pointing to a long life in the cellar.”

James Suckling 97 points
“Perfumed nose expressing notes of baked pears, almond powder, cream, baked lemons, chamomile and some white flowers. Medium-bodied with bright acidity and character. Vertical with so much tension. Vibrant and intense but remains in control. Plenty of verve and brightness. There is a purity to it. Textural and well-composed. A brilliant white with a long, mineral finish. Drink or hold.”

Tan Fruit Maresh Vineyard ‘Extra Tan’ Chardonnay, Dundee Hills 2023 750ml !79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 21 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 97 points
“This bone-dry chardonnay is crafted from cluster selection at Maresh Vineyard, with 50% of the grapes affected by botrytis, yet the influence remains subtle and clean. A broad spectrum of aromatics, with pink nectarines, white cherries and white pepper lifting from the glass. Big yet weightless, with a cloudy, almost ethereal presence. Structured, with subtle tannins and a solid mineral backbone. Long and massive, yet never heavy, with extra layers of depth. From old-vine Wente clone planted in 1983. Drink or hold.”

Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $30.90, that’s $29.36 at 5% off and $27.81 at 10% off, 14 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 93 points
“Dynamic yet sleek, with brisk acidity framed by vibrant cherry, cranberry, green tea and dusky spice flavors that zip along the snappy finish. Drink now through 2023.”

Arterberry Maresh Old Vines Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $54.50, that’s $51.78 at 5% off and $49.05 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 94 points
“The 2022 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills Old Vines is remarkably pretty, cascading up from the glass with a vibrant blend of minty herbs and crushed cherries complemented by hints of cola and spice. This has energy to spare, silken in feel with ripe red berry fruits that envelop the senses. It takes on a darker shade toward the close as tactile minerals saturate. A bump of juicy acidity enlivens the finish as sweet tannins tug at the senses and notes of blood orange slowly fade. The 2022 is like a well-muscled dancer. It’s already so likable that many collectors may not have the patience to watch it fully mature. The Dundee Hills Old Vines is sourced from vines that average 41 years old, all Pommard clones, sourced from 75% Maresh and 25% Weber Vineyard.”

Arterberry Maresh Weber Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $64.50, that’s $61.28 at 5% off and $58.05 at 10% off, 29 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 94 points
“The 2022 Pinot Noir Weber Vineyard bursts from the glass without even a swirl, displaying an exuberant bouquet of black cherry sauce, rum cake, autumnal spice and hints of balsam herbs. This is a beast, succulent and fleshy in feel yet elegant to the core, with depths of ripe red berry fruits that drench the palate in primary concentration. Minty herbs mix with steeped plums through the dramatically long finale, leaving a subtle collection of grippy tannins to linger on. There’s so much depth and power under the hood here. Although the 2022 has a more immediate feel, it also has a deep complexity that keeps me coming back.”

Jérôme Chezeaux

Jérôme Chezeaux makes wines that epitomize our favorite sort of Burgundy. Age-worthy, full of character, and built on a core of minerality, but priced a tier below what the wines deliver.

Make no mistake about it—Chézeaux makes wines that can be poured with the finest producers in Nuits, but cost 25% less. In warmer vintages he really shines, as the heat buttresses his mineral style with broader shoulders and more generous fruit.

Jérôme Chezeaux Nuits-Saint-Georges 2017 750ml $59 special, 8 bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“Chezeaux’s holdings of villages-level Nuits-Saint-Georges encompass 3.3 hectares spread throughout the appellation, with a significant proportion from the vineyards of Aux Saint Julien and Chaliots. In keeping with the spirit of the underlying terroir, this is wilder in character than the Vosne-Romanée, marked by notes of iron, and with a rambunctious bent to its tannins. Never deficient in fruit, it offers plenty of earth and sous-bois elements as well, all in a driving fashion.”

Jérôme Chezeaux Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Saints-Juliens 2021 750ml $64.50 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“For the first time, Jerome and Lyse in 2020 separately vinified and bottled their parcel in Aux Saint-Juliens, a lieu-dit nestled against the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges itself along its northern edge. These 1987-planted vines produce a wine, as with the Charbonnieres, more thickly fruited than the basic Nuits-Saint-Georges bottling, but an underlying sense of salinity here, along with starker and less buffered tannins, gives it a more linear and penetrating personality.”

Jérôme Chezeaux Les Vaucrains, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2021 750ml $138 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“Nuits-Saint-Georges famously possesses no grand cru vineyards, but Les Vaucrains is widely considered one in all but name. Always the most complete of Chezeaux’s premier crus, Vaucrains rumbles with tension—an authoritative wine that exudes an impression of depth and solidity. Here, the fruit, mineral, and savory elements bind together more tightly, more seamlessly. Jérôme owns just over a quarter-hectare of east-facing vines in Vaucrains, and his conservative oak regimen—never more than one-third of the barrels are new—highlights the power of the terroir itself.”

Jérôme Chezeaux Les Suchots, Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru 2021 750ml $185 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“With grand crus Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg right next door, premier cru Les Suchots lies in one of the most elite neighborhoods in the Cote d’Or. Chezeaux owns a third of a hectare here, and this is often the greatest wine in his cellar. A whirlwind of intoxicating Vosne spice ushers in fruit both broad and precise, yet somehow everything remains focused; it’s a tour de force, vintage after vintage.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!
Jérôme Chezeaux Rue de Chaux, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2017 750ml $75 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“Located almost dead-center in the appellation, Rue de Chaux is perhaps the most quintessentially “Nuits-Saint-Georges” among Chezeaux’s premier crus. Jerome owns a mere 0.29 hectares in this steep, topsoil-deficient vineyard, and his ever-elegant touch yields a wine of both grace and power. Darkly fruited, dense, and slightly brooding, it also offers an enchanting savory-spicy perfume.”
