Special Feature: Künstler Wines: August 2023

Two Regions, Two Künstlers

“What’s in a name?” Shakespeare asks in his most famous work of Romeo & Juliet. The idea being that it isn’t so much the way we identify something that distinguishes it, but rather its quality. The same can be said for wine! Although…..certain names and consistent excellence do have a remarkable way of repeating themselves throughout the classic regions of wine. Whether it’s the Reverdys of Sancerre, the Prüms of the Mosel, or the Conternos of Barolo, it’s not uncommon to find a pattern of brilliance across the disparate families that make up a region, coincidental examples included.

The Künstler name is one such coincidental example; as we at Vinopolis have long adored both the wines of Weiser-Künstler and Weingut Künstler for their beautiful expressions of riesling from two different regions.

Vinous 91 Points “The 2020 Chardonnay Wolff Vineyard is fabulous, something that is all the more remarkable considering the freakish year. Orange confit, pineapple, butter, apricot, tangerine and spice are all dialed up in this decidedly exotic, lush Chardonnay from Mount Eden.

K Vintners Syrah The Deal Sundance Vineyard Syrah 2020 750ml $33 special, 36 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 95 Points “As with almost all of the Syrahs here, the 2020 Syrah The Deal was not destemmed, saw an extended maceration, and spent 18 months in 40% new French puncheons. Deep ruby/purple-hued, it has an incredibly floral perfume of black and blue fruits, pepper, iron, and crushed stone. With medium to full-bodied richness, a focused, precision, elegant texture, and a great finish, it’s a gem of a Syrah as well as an insane value.”

K Vintners Syrah Motor City Kitty MCK 2020 750ml $39 special, 36 bottles available

Vietti Barbaresco Masseria Roncaglie 2019 750ml $128 special, 6 bottles available
Vinous 98 Points “The 2019 Barbaresco Masseria Roncaglie is the best Barbaresco I have ever tasted from Vietti. Bright, translucent and full of energy, the 2019 is stunning from the very first taste, and it was poured after all the Barolos in the range. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, cinnamon, mint and orange peel all grace this exquisite, mind-blowing Barbaresco. The 2019 is pure and total finesse. For many years, the Barbaresco has been the hidden gem in this lineup.
