Racines VineyardWhen one of the preeminent names in Burgundy, Étienne de Montille of Domaine de Montille, sought out land on the West Coast of America to craft Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a Burgundian sensibility, it was only natural that he focused on the Santa Rita Hills in Santa Barbara County. (It’s a region that seems to pull at French hearts, as it did with the late Philippe Cambie and his joint project with Adam Lee of Siduri, named Beau Marchais.)
 
And draw more French folk, it did. Étienne shared the news with his friend Rodolphe Péters of Champagne’s top-class grower estate, Pierre Péters, who quickly signed on and became the sparkling wine consultant for the project.

The name has been passed from mother to daughter for generations in Brooke Delmas Roberts’ family. A project intended to mine the possibilities of Rhône varietals in Walla Walla, Brooke is the Cal-Poly educated and Napa experienced viticulturist responsible for sustainably guiding this family-owned estate from one generation to the next. Alongside Steve Robertson, Brooke’s father and Delmas’ chief vintner, the focus is on direct management of the vineyards, a “boots-in-the-rows” approach that has paid off with rave reviews from critics like Eric Guido and Steven Tanzer of Vinous Media.

This project from Bill Harlan (yes THE Bill Harlan) is about as far humanity can currently reach into producing ultra high-end cabernet sauvignon with our current knowledge of viticulture and winemaking. Harlan employs 55 full-time vineyard workers to nurture and ultimately hand-select only the most pristine grape clusters for the finished single-vineyard wines. The vineyard sites themselves were curated after more than a decade of research and quality testing to uncover which plots produced wine of the utmost pedigree.
