Hermitage

Journey with us to Hermitage: one of the most prestigious hills in all of France. Here, one finds the noble Syrah grape at its finest – offering rich and robust reds that can age for decades.

Hermitage is a granite hill with shallow soils of limestone or sandy gravel. Vines are grown along the southern slope facing the Rhone River where they can soak up the sun during the long summer days. At the top of the slope is a chapel, which gives its name to Jaboulet’s top vineyard, La Chapelle. The vineyard of Les Bessards lies on the western side of the hill, the source of one of Delas Freres’ top bottlings.

On offer, we have cellared whites from Chapoutier, a rare find indeed, and a selection of reds including those from Chapoutier, Delas Freres, and Jaboulet. These are three of the top producers on the hill with outstanding reputations. Though these wines don’t begin to approach the prices of First Growth Bordeaux, they can hold their own in the cellar and your glass. So, browse our holdings below and stock up while our three-day sale is on.

Robert Parker-Wine Advocate 99 points
“The awesome 1999 Ermitage Cuvee de l’Oree flirts with perfection. It is full-bodied, with an incredible bouquet of liquid minerals, licorice, honeysuckle, citrus, and a hint of tropical fruits. One-hundred percent new oak aging has been completely absorbed by the wine’s fruit and glycerin. This is a winemaking tour de force, made from exceedingly low yields of 12-15 hectoliters per hectare (less than one ton of fruit per acre). However, readers should understand that these are often unusual wines to drink because they tend to show exceptionally well for 4-5 years after bottling, then close up until about age 12. They can last for 4-5 decades. Anticipated maturity: now-2006; 2012-2050. Along with Gerard and Jean-Louis Chave, Chapoutier is producing the finest expressions of white Hermitage. His single vineyard cuvees are to die for if you like these eccentric, idiosyncratic, mammoth dry whites.”

M. Chapoutier Ermitage l’Ermite Rouge 2013 750ml Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off and $224.10 at 10% off, 8 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 97 points
“Sleek, with mouthwatering flavors of red currant, raspberry and cherry preserves forming the core, while a dusting of cocoa, a snap of red licorice and a long, lingering iron spine complete the picture. Very pure and focused. The minerality wins out in the end. Best from 2019 through 2032. 29 cases imported. — JM”

Delas Freres Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points
“Ripe, fresh, bright and pure, with a racy-edged mix of plum sauce, cherry preserves and blackberry paste flavors underscored with mouthwatering anise, apple wood and sweet tobacco notes. The long finish flows nicely, and this flirts with approachable already, but there’s no rush. Drink now through 2034. 2,083 cases made, 175 cases imported. — JM”

Josh Raynolds-Vinous 94-96 points
“Inky ruby. Smoke- and mineral-accented black and blue fruits, violet, licorice and an olive nuance on the deeply perfumed nose. Stains the palate with intense cherry, blueberry and fruitcake flavors that are sharpened by a spicy touch of cracked pepper. Youthfully chewy tannins frame an impressively long, penetrating finish that leaves candied dark berry and floral pastille notes behind. These are still young days for this wine but, as usual, it already screams ‘Hermitage.’”

Jeb Dunnuck 99 points
“My favorite release from this estate is consistently their Les Bessards Hermitage, and their 2019 is no exception. Coming from the western part and pure broken granite soils on the west side of this magical hill, it sports a dense purple hue to go with a brilliant perfume of cassis, graphite, scorched earth, burning embers, spring flowers, and peppery herbs. Incredibly complex, layered, and nuanced, with classic Hermitage characteristics, it still stays firmly planted in the ripe, sunny, sexy vintage. Full-bodied, concentrated, and structured on the palate, it has a wealth of tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. This is pure Hermitage magic that needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years and will evolve for 20-30 years in cold cellars. Hats off to the team at Delas for another incredible wine.”

Josh Raynolds-Vinous 97-98 points
“Inky violet. Displays assertive aromas of blackcurrant, cherry-cola and violet, along with olive, smoked meat and vanilla nuances that gain strength with aeration. Vibrant, focused and appealingly sweet, offering intense, mineral driven black and blue fruit, floral pastille and smoky bacon flavors that become deeper and spicier as the wine opens up. The floral note comes back strong on the impressively long, penetrating finish, which features youthfully chewy.”

Delas Freres Hermitage Les Grandes Vignes ‘Ligne de Crete’ 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $299, that’s $284.05 at 5% off and $269.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now

Josh Raynolds-Vinous 96-98 points
“Powerful, highly perfumed aromas of black/blue fruit liqueur, licorice, olive and potpourri are complemented by an exotic suggestion of incense. Stains the palate with intense boysenberry, cherry, cassis and spicecake flavors that deepen steadily through the midpalate. Shows a suave blend of power and delicacy and betrays no rough edges. Youthfully chewy tannins add shape to an extremely long, mineral-driven finish that delivers outstanding clarity and floral thrust.”

Domaine de la Chapelle Hermitage La Chapelle 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $189, that’s $179.55 at 5% off and $170.10 at 10% off, 21 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 98 points
“The 2017 Hermitage La Chapelle comes from the firm’s vineyards on the western half of the Hermitage slope, primarily Le Méal, but with substantial contributions from Les Rocoules and Les Bessards. Classic notes of cassis, black olives, mocha and roasted meat are joined by hints of baking spices in a wine that’s full-bodied, deep, dense and rich, with a velvety texture and a lingering finish. It’s lower in alcohol than the 2018, less voluptuous and maybe just a step behind that monumental wine, but it’s still a serious collectible with three decades of evolution ahead of it.”

Domaine de la Chapelle Hermitage La Chapelle 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 36 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 98-100 points
“Might this be the next vintage of La Chapelle to crack triple digits? Knockout aromas of crushed stone, violets, blueberries, and cassis mark the nose of the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle, while the full-bodied palate is undeniably more intense and powerful than the more elegant 2018. Rich and velvety, it coats the mouth with dark fruit and creamy-textured espresso, yet retains remarkable length and licorice-derived peppery freshness on the finish. Wow!”

Domaine Dujac Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2021 750ml Was $899, Now $749, 1 bottle in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 94-95 points
“The 2021 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is brilliant, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, summer fruit compote, sweet spices, licorice, peony and coniferous forest floor. Full-bodied, ample and layered, it’s fleshy and textural, its satiny attack segueing into a deep, seamless mid-palate and a perfumed, penetrating finish.”

Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2019 1.5L Was $1,449, Now $1,199, 1 magnum in stock now
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 95-97 points
“The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an airy and generous bouquet with lifted black fruit, hoisin and light roasted chestnut aromas, all well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a beautiful line of acidity, svelte and harmonious with a slightly grainy-textured finish. I adore the discrete crescendo in this Grand Cru and the unimposing but long aftertaste. “It’s been growing in stature over the last 10 to 15 years,” remarked Alex Seysses. Proof of that is evident by tasting this superb Charmes-Chambertin.”

Cayuse and More: The Wines of Christoph Baron

“While the ship has long since sailed with regards to getting on the mailing list, these are singular wines well worth the effort to track down on the secondary market… As I’ve said numerous times, Christophe Baron and assistant winemaker Elizabeth Bourcier produce some of the most singular and impressive wines out there.” -Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate

“The Cayuse wines continue to set the benchmark for Rhône varieties in Washington State…” –Eric Guido, Vinous

Cayuse Vineyards Bionic Frog Syrah, Walla Walla Valley, USA 2022 750ml $219 special, 3 bottles available
(not reviewed yet, 2021 reviews provided  for reference)
Anthony Mueller-Wine Advocate 98+ Points “The 2021 Syrah Bionic Frog has a medium magenta core and offers a fresh, floral and spicy bouquet accompanied by elegant, savory notes. Ripe notions of plum skin and dark cherries burst from the nose, overflowing with aromatic profile. Medium to full-bodied, the palate presents an elegant and refined mouthfeel with food-friendly tannins and nuances of umami, culminating in a long, complex finish that highlights the distinctiveness and embodies the “wow factor” of the Walla Walla Valley. The Syrah rested for 18 months in approximately 20% new and neutral French oak demi-muids, foudre and barrels. A total of 6,288 bottles were produced.”
Jeb Dunnuck 98 Points “The 2021 Syrah Bionic Frog is slightly more elegant and streamlined than past vintages, but it’s an insanely complex, layered, elegant Syrah that has so much to offer. Ripe black raspberries, redcurrants, shiitake mushrooms, cold fireplace, and rose petal/spring flower notes all make for a compelling, singular bouquet, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and an umami, mineral-laced, iron-like character on the finish that’s something to behold. This beauty needs 4-5 years of bottle age (I followed this bottle for multiple days, and it only improved with air) and will evolve like a great Hermitage over the following two decades.”

Cayuse Vineyards Camaspelo, Walla Walla Valley, USA 2022 750ml $149 special, 6 bottles available
(not reviewed yet, 2021 review provided for reference)
Jeb Dunnuck 94 Points “Leading off the Bordeaux variety releases, the 2021 Camaspelo is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, and I believe it’s raised in larger barrels. It always reminds me of a Margaux with its more spicy, complex, perfumed style, and it has lots of savory red and black fruits as well as notes of dried tobacco, underbrush, chocolate, and lead pencil. Medium to full-bodied, supple, layered, and elegant, it has an already irresistible profile yet should evolve for 15 years or more.”

Cayuse Vineyards Flying Pig, Walla Walla Valley, USA 2022 750ml $149 special, 3 bottles available
(not reviewed yet, 2021 review provided for reference)
Jeb Dunnuck 95 Points “A Cabernet Franc-dominated blend that includes 31% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Flying Pig is medium ruby/purple-hued, with Bordeaux-like notes of black cherries, new leather, smoked herbs, lead pencil, and just a kiss of that Rocks umami character in the background. Medium to full-bodied, pure, balanced, and elegant on the palate, it has silky tannins and no hard edges. It too has an up-front, approachable style.”

Cayuse Vineyards God Only Knows Armada Vineyard Grenache, Walla Walla Valley, USA 2021 750ml $149 special, 6 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 95 Points “Rocking raspberries, strawberries, rose petals, ground pepper, sappy garrigue, and a hint of iron all emerge from the 2021 Grenache God Only Knows, another pretty, medium-bodied, elegant, finesse-driven Grenache from this team that’s just about overflowing with character. With ripe, polished tannins, beautiful balance, and a great finish, it has the class to evolve gracefully for 10-12 years.”

Cayuse Grenache Walla Walla 6042 NV 1.5L $279 special, 1 magnum available
Jeb Dunnuck 97 Points “The NV Grenache 6042 is a blend of 56% 2013, 24% 2014, and 20% 2015 (with the vintages adding up to 6,042). Its translucent ruby hue is followed by a brilliant, floral perfume of red and black cherries, fresh rose petals, spice, and dried herbes de Provence. With medium to full body, a supple, layered, elegant mouthfeel, and no hard edges, this beautifully layered, incredibly impressive Grenache is going to continue drinking brilliantly for another 10-15 years.”

Cayuse Vineyards Armada Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley, USA 2021 750ml $159 special, 10 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 97+ Points “One of the bigger, richer wines in the lineup, the 2021 Syrah Armada Vineyard comes from a high-density vineyard located just beside the cellar and was brought up all in demi-muids. This deeper ruby/plum-hued Syrah boasts a big, masculine bouquet of smoked red and black fruits, sauteed mushrooms, cured meats, iron, and cold fireplace nuances (it almost has a Graves-like character) that flows to a medium to full-bodied, rich, concentrated Syrah with terrific overall balance, ripe tannins, and a great finish. As with the other 2021s here, it needs lots of air to show at its best and will ideally be given 4-5 years in the cellar. It’s going to hit its 20th birthday in fine form.”

Cayuse Vineyards Cailloux Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley, USA 2022 750ml $135 special, 6 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 98 Points “Meatier red and black fruits, smoke, ground pepper, and savory herb notes all define the 2021 Syrah Cailloux Vineyard, a concentrated, medium to full-bodied Syrah with a classic Northern Rhône-like style in its aromas as well as structure. Fermented with a splash of Viognier, it picks up violet and floral notes with time in the glass, and this darker, more gamey expression of this vineyard is a dead ringer for a great Côte Rôtie. I love it today (with a decant), but it’s going to benefit from 2-4 years in the cellar and evolve for 15 years or more.”

Cayuse Vineyards En Cerise Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley, USA 2022 750ml $135 special, 9 bottles available
(not reviewed yet, 2021 review provided for reference)
Jeb Dunnuck 97 Points “Ripe black cherries, darker raspberries, sappy flowers, shiitake mushrooms, and a kiss of black pepper all define the 2021 Syrah En Cerise Vineyard, an incredibly pure, seamless, elegant Syrah from this estate. It’s always a perfumed, exotic wine, yet the 2021 shines for its incredible purity, precision, and length. It benefits from air and will drink beautifully over the coming 15 years or more.”

Cayuse Syrah Wallah Wallah #15, Walla Walla Valley, USA 2021 1.5L $279 special, 1 magnum available
Jeb Dunnuck 99 Points “The Wallah Wallah Special releases are always a blend of vineyards, although Christophe never tells which ones. Nevertheless, these tend to have a more Northern Rhône-inspired profile. The 2021 Syrah Wallah Wallah Special #15 is another gorgeous effort from this talented vigneron, and it offers a deep ruby hue to go with incredible aromatics of red, blue, and black fruits interwoven with notions of cold fireplace, shiitake mushrooms, rose petals, bloody meat, and ground pepper, just to name of few of its nuances. These carry to a medium to full-bodied Syrah with a deep, layered mouthfeel, beautifully polished, elegant tannins, rock star mid-palate depth, and a great, great finish. It’s one of the bigger, richer 2021s in the lineup, and this absolutely gorgeous Syrah will have 20-25 years of overall longevity. Bravo.”

Winery Note: In 2011, Hors Catégorie was the first vineyard planted on the steep slope along the North Fork of the Walla Walla River. Hidden in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, Hors Catégorie Vineyard is located where the North Fork converges with the Walla Walla River. The Syrah vines cling to the hillside beneath ragged cliffs and surrounded by rocky outcroppings. Their roots struggle for nourishment in the fractured basalt.
Hors Categorie, Walla Walla Valley, USA 2020 750ml $379 special, 2 bottles available
International Wine Review 100 Points *Highly recommended, Editor’s Choice* “Aged for 18 months in 100% neutral French oak, this Syrah is a masterclass of making Syrah in Washington state. The 2020 Hors Catégorie Syrah is otherworldly and is one of the few 100-point wines that I have scored. Layered complexity gives you hit after hit on the nose – starting with floral notes of lilac and orange blossom, then it gifts meaty notes of smoked brisket and bacon fat, then it presents blackberry and blue plum skin flavors, and finally, it finishes with deep umami, mushroom, iodine, and dusty earth aspects. It’s perfectly balanced on the tongue with absolutely no rough edges to speak of. I don’t think I’ve had a wine quite like it before, and it’s stunning in every way. Just 291 cases were crafted of this impeccable wine.”
Wine Enthusiast 99 Points *Editors’ Choice* “This Syrah flirts with perfection in rarefied air. Black-and-blueberry aromas waltz gracefully with notes of thyme, a fresh-mowed hay field and bacon just hitting the griddle. This is a perfectly balanced wine with medium weight, lemony acidity and flavors like ripe blackberries, aged balsamic and black tea. “

Sine Qua Non

Sourcing fruit from a wide variety of growers from year to year, and increasingly from their own vineyards has caused the winery to never make exactly the same wine twice, of which winemaker  Manfred Krankl has said, “People buy Sine Qua Non. They don’t seem to give a toot where it’s from.” Krankl is unique among European winemakers turned American winery owners as he did not start in the wine industry until after relocating to America. A man of assuredness and many talents, Manfred is famous for not only his wines but the original artwork that adorns each new bottling he produces.

Sine Qua Non ‘Next of Kyn’ Cumulus Vineyard #15 Proprietary Red, Central Coast, USA 2021 750ml $445 special, 3 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 99 Points “The 2021 No. 15 Cumulus Vineyard is a total stunner. It’s also a pretty radical departure from most years in that Grenache drives the blend. That comes through in the wine’s captivating aromatics and gorgeous, layered fruit. Crushed rose petal, red cherry, plum, mint, mocha and dried herbs infuse the palate with notable depth. The 2021 is flat-out stunning—that’s all there is to it. The blend is 40% Grenache, 34% Syrah, 22% Petite Sirah and 4% Petit Manseng. There’s a touch of stem inclusion (7%), but not much.”

Sine Qua Non Next of Kyn Numero Sete Touriga Nacional, California, USA 2021 750ml $445 special, 1 bottle available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98+ Points “The 2021 Touriga Nacional – Número Siete is terrific, but it is also a very young wine that will need time in bottle to blossom. All of the pedigree of this great vintage comes through loud and clear. Readers should plan on cellaring this for at least a few years. Dried herbs, lavender, licorice and cool, blue-toned fruit are all beautifully delineated throughout. Dollops of Syrah and Petit Manseng round out the blend, with an added kick of floral nuance from the 11% stems.”

A. Margaine Special Club Blanc de Blancs Brut, Champagne, France 2016 750ml $108 special, 4 bottles available
not reviewed yet, 2015 review provided for reference
Jeb Dunnuck (2015 review) “With this year’s release, the 2015 Champagne Special Club Blanc De Blancs Brut packs in a balance of power and electricity. Raised predominantly in stainless steel tank with 27% in barrel for 60 months, its pale yellow hue leads to classic aromas of pure green apple, candied lime, flinty crushed stones, and fresh honeysuckle. Lively and herbaceous on the palate, it offers a spritely mousse with loads of ripe grapefruit-noted citrus and a long, persistent core of acidity, well-balanced with ripe fruit and a stony mineral texture. This fantastic and age-worthy example from the 2015 vintage has the structure to cruise across the coming 15 or more years. Disgorged in January 2023, it has the addition of 8 grams per liter dosage.”

Constantine Trisilice Premier Cru, Champagne, USA 2017 750ml $59 special, 12 bottles available
Vinopolnote “From the Villedommange Village in Montagne de Reims.”
Winery Notes “Light golden colour with chalky reflects. The soft effervescence highlight the brightness of this wine. The nose is creamy and full. We smell a beautiful balance between the unctuosity of the red grapes and the citrus aromas from the Chardonnay, giving its finesse to the wine. Subtle notes of pastries such as apricot pie are also perceived.  The attack is direct with a beautiful acidic freshness, ending with  orange confit notes. A beautiful pairing between mouthwatering roundness and a sharp freshness during the whole tasting. A slight bitterness in the final taste accentuate the complexity of this champagne.”

Domaine Jerome Chezeaux

Domaine Chézeaux, a historic estate in Côte de Nuits, has been producing high-quality wines since 1930. Under Jérome Chézeaux, the domaine has shifted its focus to bottling more of its own wines, including those from prestigious vineyards like Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Today the winery is helmed by father and daughter team Jerome and Lys, with cellar practices such as de-stemming, malolactic fermentation, and new French Oak providing a classy and classic profile.

“The Chezeaux house style is difficult to pin down, and in fact even to call it a “style” suggests a certain presence of ego that is not there. Always fully ripe, the wines nonetheless never display a wisp of flab even in the warmest of vintages; they offer the distinct impression that the grapes were harvested at the most perfect possible moment. They are graceful yet not exactly polite; always thoroughly extracted but never pushed.” -Rosenthal Wine Merchant, Importer

Jerome Chezeaux NSG Aux Saint Juliens 2021 750ml $64.50 special, 10 bottles available

Jerome Chezeaux NSG ‘Les Charbonnieres’ 2021 750ml $66.50 special, 4 bottles available
Winery Note “This Nuits villages cuvée from Chezeaux is selected from the oldest vines of Les Charbonnières—planted in 1920, 1930 and 1935—The vineyard is situated just below the premier cru Aux Corvées on the slope in the appellation’s southern sector and typically sees millerandage (shot berries) with very low yields. Boasting true old-vines power, this is always thicker-fruited and exuberantly spicy, with great length. Its lusciousness, however, does nothing to mask the underlying complexity that sets this cuvée apart.”

Jerome Chezeaux NSG Les Pruliers 2021 750ml $128 special, 3 bottles available
Winery Note “The smallest-production premier cru in Chezeaux’s cellar, Les Pruliers lies near the border of Nuits-Saint-Georges and Premeaux-Prissey in the southern part of the appellation. Jerome works a mere tenth of a hectare here: a parcel of extremely old vines that produce a wine of warmth and generosity. More full-bodied than the Rue de Chaux above, its fruit is pitched toward the black, and, while not heavy-handed in the slightest, it emphasizes robustness over sleekness.”

Jerome Chezeaux NSG Les Vaucrains 2021 750ml $138 special, 3 bottles available
Winery Note “Nuits-Saint-Georges famously possesses no grand cru vineyards, but Les Vaucrains is widely considered one in all but name. Always the most complete of Chezeaux’s premier crus, Vaucrains rumbles with tension—an authoritative wine that exudes an impression of depth and solidity. Here, the fruit, mineral, and savory elements bind together more tightly, more seamlessly. Jérôme owns just over a quarter-hectare of east-facing vines in Vaucrains, and his conservative oak regimen—never more than one-third of the barrels are new—highlights the power of the terroir itself.”

Jerome Chezeaux Nuits Saint Georges 2021 750ml $61.90 special, 4 bottles available
Winery Note “Chezeaux’s holdings of villages-level Nuits-Saint-Georges encompass 3.3 hectares spread throughout the appellation, with a significant proportion from the vineyards of Aux Saint Jacques and Chaliots. In keeping with the spirit of the underlying terroir, this is wilder in character than his Vosne-Romanée, marked by notes of iron, and with a rambunctious bent to its tannins. Never deficient in fruit, it offers plenty of earth and sous-bois elements as well, all in a driving fashion.”

Jerome Chezeaux Vosne-Romanee Les Chaumes 2021 750ml $125 special, 3 bottles available
Winery Note “Les Chaumes lies at the southern edge of Vosne-Romanée, immediately below the hallowed premier crus Aux Malconsorts and La Tache on a vein of limestone and marl. Chezeaux owns four-tenths of a hectare here, producing a wine that marries the exotic spice and succulent fruit of Vosne-Romanée with the mineral force of Nuits-Saint-Georges in ravishing fashion.”

Jerome Chezeaux Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots 2021 750ml $185 special, 3 bottles available
Winery Note “With grand crus Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Richebourg right next door, premier cru Les Suchots lies in one of the most elite neighborhoods in the Cote d’Or. Chezeaux owns a third of a hectare here, and this is often the greatest wine in his cellar. A whirlwind of intoxicating Vosne spice ushers in fruit both broad and precise, yet somehow everything remains focused; it’s a tour de force, vintage after vintage.”

Dessert Wines

Disznoko Aszu 5 Puttonyos, Tokaj, Hungary 2013 500ml $49 special, 18 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 96 Points “This Tokaji is dark amber in color, with aromas of honeysuckle, peach and acacia flower. In the mouth there are flavors of clover honey, pear and baked sweet apples. Acidity is well balanced to the amount of sweetness.”

Kopke Colheita Port, Portugal 2013 750ml $39 special, 12 bottles available
Importer Notes “Red hue with brownish tones. Rich and intense nose where the aromas of ripe fruit combine with notes of nuts and spice. In the mouth it is intense and full of flavours, where the sweetest flavours combine with notes of nuts and some white pepper. Fresh and intense aftertaste.”

“The Maresh farm was originally planted to plums, cherries and hazelnuts. In 1970, at the suggestion of Dick Erath, the family decided to plant grapevines. The own-rooted vines (mostly Pommard and Wadenswil clones) are planted at a spacious 600 vines per acre (six by 12 feet) on a south-facing slope between 500 and 700 feet in elevation. The property sits on 12 feet of volcanic clay-loam that provides drainage and facilitates dry farming. Maresh vineyard was the fifth vineyard to be established in the state of Oregon, and it’s still the oldest vineyard on Worden Hill Road, now the home of some of the most revered vineyard sites in the Dundee Hills appellation.” –Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, “Oregon, Willamette Valley: Arterberry Maresh – Maresh Vineyard Retrospective 2005-2022”

Vintage Notes ” ‘2018 was another warm vintage in the Willamette Valley and produced a bigger crop—around 2,200 cases of the Maresh Vineyard Pinot Noir were made. ‘I crafted something with quite a bit of elegance out of a warm year,’ Jim Maresh says with pride. ‘It’s what I should have done in 2014.’ ” -Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate
NEW PRICE  Arterberry Maresh ‘Maresh Vineyard’ Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills, USA 2018 750ml WAS $64.50 NOW $59 special, 36+ bottles available
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 95+ Points “The 2018 Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard has a medium ruby color and is bursting with layers of raspberry, cranberry, pipe tobacco, dried sage and lavender. The medium-bodied palate is silky and supple with concentrated (though still youthfully coiled) flavors and a long, powerful finish. After a couple of hours in the glass, it begins to reveal a deeper, more nuanced perfume, suggesting the 2018 will be best enjoyed after sufficient time in the cellar.”

Vintage Notes “2022 was ‘a freaky growing season,’ Jim Maresh recalls. ‘The growing season was almost identical to 2008—the greatest season of all time. But in 2022, we had large cluster formation rather than a bunch of shatter like in 2008, so it was bigger clusters that hung super late. The cool vintage with bigger clusters combined to give really low sugars. This is around 12.7% alcohol—I picked it the day before Halloween.’ While the 2021s are super concentrated and highly coiled, ‘the 2022s aren’t built like the 2021s,’ he explains. ‘The 2022s are earlier drinking, rounder, more open.’ “-Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate
NEW PRICE  Arterberry Maresh ‘Maresh Vineyard’ Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills, USA 2022 750ml WAS $69 NOW $64.50 special, 36 bottles available
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 95 Points ‘Pale ruby-purple in color, the 2022 Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard features soaring floral perfume on the nose complemented by layers of raspberry, cranberry, orange bitters, gravel dust and woodsmoke. The medium-bodied palate is bursting with succulent, floral fruit. Supple and refreshing, it offers a long, flavorful finish and is delicious straight from the bottle.’

…Newly arrived from Arterberry Maresh:

HOT DEAL  Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills, USA 2023 750ml $29 special, 36+ bottles available
Not reviewed yet, 2022 reviews provided for reference
Clive Pursehouse-Decanter 96 points “Pommard, Wadenswil (50%) and a bit of Dijon, the youngest vines on the Maresh estate, are from 1997, as well as plantings from 1991, 83, and 70, all of it own-rooted. Earth and rose petals announce gorgeous aromatics. Winemaker Jim Maresh destems 100%. It sees 18-24 months in barrel. At $33.50, this may be the best deal in American wine. Earthen aromatics, pine bough, and blood orange spritz. The palate is fresh with blue and red bramble fruits, spicy clove and savoury herbaceousness.”

…And newly re-arrived from Jimmy Maresh’s all Chardonnay side project Tan Fruit:

Tan Fruit Maresh Vineyard Chardonnay, Dundee Hills, USA 2022 750ml WAS $59 NOW $54.50 special, 36+ bottles available
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 95 Points “The 2022 Chardonnay Maresh Vineyard comes from a block of Dijon clone vines planted in 1991 in the Dundee Hills on a steep, south-facing slope at 675 feet of elevation. Barrel fermented and matured for 10 months in 15% new French oak, plus four months in stainless steel, it’s reminiscent of Chablis and boasts exceptionally pure aromas. It opens with flint and petrichor before blossoming to apricot, elderflower liqueur, lime peel and hazelnuts. The palate is vibrant and silky with understated layers of creamy, peachy fruit, and its linear acidity and flinty tones come together for a shimmery finish. For several days after it’s opened, the Maresh Vineyard becomes more and more expressive, pointing to a long life in the cellar.”

Tan Fruit White Walnut Vineyard Chardonnay, Dundee Hills, USA 2022 750ml WAS $59 NOW $54.50 special, 36+ bottles available
James Suckling 97 Points “Perfumed nose expressing notes of baked pears, almond powder, cream, baked lemons, chamomile and some white flowers. Medium-bodied with bright acidity and character. Vertical with so much tension. Vibrant and intense but remains in control. Plenty of verve and brightness. There is a purity to it. Textural and well-composed. A brilliant white with a long, mineral finish. Drink or hold.”
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 96 Points “Last year’s debut of Tan Fruit’s 2021 White Walnut Chardonnay was extraordinarily singular and expressive, and this 2022 Chardonnay White Walnut Vineyard is just as arresting. Matured for 12 months in barrel, plus six months in stainless steel, it explodes from the glass with a kaleidoscopic perfume of lychee and peach preserves streaked with accents of honey, hazelnut and green herbs. The medium-bodied palate is satiny and mouth coating and echoes the exoticism of the nose as it unfolds layer after layer of honeyed, spicy, floral fruit. Its focused spine of acidity expertly balances its natural opulence, and it has a hauntingly long finish.”

Prinz: A Johannes Selbach Selection

Johannes Selbach, winemaker-owner of Selbach-Oster and tastemaker extraordinaire of German wines (he helped Terry Theise launch his portfolio and connect with producers), was kind enough to recommend this winery to our shop. With Johannes’ guidance, we have selected a range of well-priced examples to share with you.

Fred Prinz originally started Weingut Prinz as a “garagiste” or hobbiest winemaker operation in 1991. The critics quickly became enamored, and an invitation to join the legendary VDP consortium followed in 2005. Their estate vineyards are farmed organically, with a house style that aims for “minerality, elegance, finesse and ageing ability” that expresses terroir. With high-elevation holdings in the Rheingau, the winery produces a full range of Riesling’s including the ultra-rare Eiswein.

Prinz wines are beloved and admired in Germany, yet are relatively unknown in the USA. Explore these near-exclusive and budget-friendly releases on our three-day sale now!

Weingut Prinz Hallgartener Wurzgarten Riesling Eiswein, Rheingau 2016 375ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 21 half-bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 93 points
“AP: 63 17. The 2016er Riesling Eiswein was made from fruit harvested at approx. 120° Oechsle in Bernkastel, Erden and Ürzig on both November 29 and November 30, and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar (143 g/l). It develops a beautifully zesty and fresh nose of candied grapefruit, orange jelly, and spices, joined by riper notes of quince, pear puree, and almond cream after some airing. The wine is superbly balanced and refined on the palate, and leaves a rather pure and smooth feel in the very long and light finish. The sweetness still dominates the acid core in the after-taste at this stage, but this should change after a few years of cellaring. 2024-2036. (Oct 2019)”

Rocca di Montegrossi ‘Ridolfo’ Toscana IGT 2015 1.5L Was $179, Now $159, 15 magnums in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98+ points
“The 2015 Ridolfo is a new Cabernet Sauvignon/Pugnitello blend from Marco Ricasoli bottled only in magnum. Vibrant and finely sculpted, the 2015 impresses right out of the gate. A whole range of savory aromatics, lavender, spice, licorice and mocha open with time in the glass. Sweet rose petal and cinnamon appear later, adding brightness and lift. Cabernet Sauvignon and Pugnitello are not obvious varieties to blend, as they are, on paper, more similar than complementary. Even so, the combination works so well. I can’t wait to see how this ages. The 2015 is a total knock-out!”
Wine & Spirits 96 points “Marco Ricasoli’s inaugural release of Ridolfo marries the elegance of cabernet sauvignon with pugnitello’s bright and spicy notes in a unique interpretation of Tuscan terroir. Its penetrating flavors of blackberry and cherry are crunchy and vibrant even in the warm 2015 vintage, those fruit tones underlined by notes of graphite that create a cool mineral sensation. The wine almost crackles with energy, its schistous tannins firm and flavorful. An exciting new addition to the realm of Tuscan red blends, this will be fascinating to follow as it develops over the next decade. Available only in magnum—a nod toward its expected aging potential.”

Rocca di Montegrossi Vin Santo del Chianti Classico 2009 375ml Was $89, Now $79, 22 half-bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The 2009 Vin Santo is a rich, exotic wine, as it always is. Readers will find one of the richest most intense Vin Santos being made today. Plush, tropical and ample in feel, Rocca di Montegrossi’s Vin Santo is bold and racy to the core. The 350 grams of residual sugar leave the wine with tremendous textural plushness.”

Hundred Suns Wine

“When we met over 19 years ago, we agreed on a fundamental idea: we wanted to build a life together that felt like an adventure.” –Renee Saint-Amour and husband Grant Coulter, co-owners of Hundred Suns.

Renee Saint-Amour and Grant Coulter had talent to burn. After the two young professionals were bit by the wine bug and relocated from California to Oregon to begin their Oenological journey. First Grant cut his teeth working as a wine maker for Beaux Freres, one of the Willamette’s top wineries, while Renee worked full-time as a high school teacher. Finally in 2015 they made an all-or-nothing moonshot purchase, acquiring a property in the Willamette Valley that would quickly become their vineyard and winery: Hundred Suns. Their dedication goes beyond passion. From winemaking, to label design, website building, and even wax dipping individual bottles by hand, every aspect of this process has their fingerprints on it.

In this short time, they have built a loyal following among serious wine drinkers, collected high scores from some of the industry’s top critics, and built one of the most eye-catching brands in the Valley. Lovers of Oregon wines, and Beaux Freres in particular, should stock up now on Hundred Suns wines before they become hard to find.

Winery Note “This is our 7th rendition from this historic vineyard planted in a secluded valley of the Tualatin Hills AVA. A cold and wet spring started the season and slowed maturity. Summer warmed up, and the growing season finished with a glorious fall allowing for extended hang time in the vineyard.
Hundred Suns ‘Bednarik Vineyard’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, USA 2022 750ml $59 special, 24 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 96 Points “Always made from the last fruit picked by the estate, the jeweled red colored 2022 Pinot Noir Bednarik Vineyard is lifted with a beautiful floral and expressive perfume with a Burgundian aesthetic. Its notes of wildflowers, raspberries, crushed stones, and pretty orange peel are followed by a medium-bodied, linear red with ultra-fine, polished tannins, and a delicate, nuanced note of sanguine iron earth on the palate that is well-woven into the fabric. It is going to flesh out with time, but this is just a gorgeous wine already.”

Winery Note “The Carson Phillips Vineyard is planted in the north western part of the Dundee Hills.  It’s a southeast exposure but is blocked a little to the east so somewhat cooler.  Classic Jory soils and planted in 2000 so it’s got some years on it.   Deep red fruits, raspberries and strawberries.  Very delicious.”
Hundred Suns ‘Carson Phillips Vineyard’ Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills, USA 2022 750ml $59 special, 24 bottles available
Jeremy Young-International Wine Report 97 Points “With a glimmering ruby-blue core with a light pink rim, the tantalizing 2022 Carson Phillips Vineyard Pinot Noir from Hundred Suns rested in French oak barrels for 11 months. Broad and expansive across the palate, it boasts notes of Bing cherries, crushed ripe red raspberries, white tea, freshly cut roses, and subtle spice notes of grated cardamon pods. I kept coming back to this wine over the course of an hour, and it kept getting better and better with time. Tannins are a bit grippy but with a few years of bottle age, it’s going to be perfect. A small production of 154 cases was crafted. Highly recommended and editor’s choice.”

Winery Notes “This tasty elixir was grown in the high hills of the Chehalem Mountain.  Rocky basalt soils helped keep the acid intact while these grapes hung out until September 23rd.”
Hundred Suns ‘Tualatin Estate’ Gamay Noir, Willamette Valley, USA 2023 750ml $33 special, 24 bottles available
Patrick Comiskey-The New Wine Review “From a high-elevation site in the Chehalem Mountains, made with 100 percent cluster inclusion and carbonic maceration, finished in amphora and neutral barrels. It’s reserved at first, then earthy and limned with cinnamon spice. It’s fine boned and light on its feet, with a sneaky acidity on the back end.”

The Old Eight Cut refers to a diamond cut dating back to the 1400s using simple tools and few cuts to enhance the natural brilliance of the stone without disguising its true nature.–Winemaker note
Hundred Suns ‘Old Eight Cut’ Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, USA 2023 750ml $31.90 special, 24 bottles available
Winery Notes “This 2023 bottling is comprised of three dry-farmed vineyards planted in volcanic soils and hand-harvested on Sept. 9th, 10th & 17th. The clusters were gently pressed and the juice sent tank to begin their wild yeast fermentation. Once initiated, the wines were moved to French and Austrian oak to finish primary and malolactic fermentation. Bottled without filtration after 11 months.”

Fun fact: Hundred Suns was named for the number of days between flowering and harvest, and their Pinots drink like a love letter to the Willamette Valley.
Hundred Suns ‘Le Mani Vineyard’ Syrah, The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater, USA 2022 750ml $41.90 special, 24 bottles available
Winery Note “This Syrah hails from the Le Mani vineyard formerly known as River Rock. For those of you who have experienced first-hand the incredible terroir of the The Rocks District of Milton Freewater, you will understand why this wine is so unique.  Deep layers of volcanic cobblestones held together by silt and sand make up this bizarre landscape.  Warm days among the sun baked rocks imbue our Syrah with earthy minerality and layers of dark cherry, espresso bean, and black licorice. In a nod to the old world we fermented 100% whole bunch with minimal crushing and manipulation. The dark elixir spends 20 months in a combination of oak cask and terracotta amphora before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.”

Arterberry Maresh

As the third-generation in his family to make wine, Jim Maresh knows a thing or two about crafting Grand Cru-level Willamette Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. From the Arterberry Maresh’s prized position in the Dundee Hills, he releases what critics praise as “are some of the most impressive wines I’ve tried anywhere—not just in the US”, per Erin Brooks of the Wine Advocate.

…Re-Arriving from Arterberry Maresh:

Arterberry Maresh Rose of Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills, USA 2023 750ml $14 special, 24 bottles available
Winery Note “About half Pinot and half Chardonnay picked early for Rose. Fermented bone dry and aged in 100% stainless steel. Made to drink cold in the sun.”

Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills, USA 2022 750ml $64.50 special, 36 bottles available
Clive Pursehouse-Decanter 97 Points “The Maresh is a combination of 1970 and 1974 planted vines. Mouthfuls of complexity and elegance. High-toned red fruits and forest-driven umami character, pine bough, blood orange and spice. Long hang times for 2022, the low alcohol is evocative of Old World Pinot Noir. There is a darkness and complexity of the wine, with an intensity of flavour, only 5% new oak, 20 months in barrel. Spiced cinnamon, fresh red strawberries, savoury clove and smoked sea salt, bring an intensity, and a crushed stone minerality finishes this beautiful wine. Silken elegance and intensity combine in a gorgeous wine.”

Arterberry Maresh Weber Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills, USA 2021 750ml $64.50 special, 36+ bottles available
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 97+ Points “Out of curiosity, winemaker Jim Maresh and I re-tasted the 2019 Pinot Noir Weber Vineyard to compare to the recently bottled 2021s. (Weber Vineyard was previously owned by Jim’s grandfather and part of the Maresh Vineyard.) It’s beginning to curl inward, taking plenty of time to blossom from touches of iodine and flint to wild blackberries, tea leaves, lavender, salted licorice and candied orange peel. The medium-bodied palate is powerful and refreshing, with youthfully latent fruit and a long, spicy finish. Purchasers can look forward to an exciting evolution as this matures over the next 10-15 years.”

Arterberry Maresh Weber Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills, USA 2022 750ml $64.50 special, 38 bottles available
Eric Guido-Vinous 94 Points “The 2022 Pinot Noir Weber Vineyard bursts from the glass without even a swirl, displaying an exuberant bouquet of black cherry sauce, rum cake, autumnal spice and hints of balsam herbs. This is a beast, succulent and fleshy in feel yet elegant to the core, with depths of ripe red berry fruits that drench the palate in primary concentration. Minty herbs mix with steeped plums through the dramatically long finale, leaving a subtle collection of grippy tannins to linger on. There’s so much depth and power under the hood here. Although the 2022 has a more immediate feel, it also has a deep complexity that keeps me coming back.”

Peter William Vineyard

With a viticultural history dating back to the 1870’s, the Rogue Valley is older than the Willamette Valley and severely undervalued. Little by little though, consumers are rediscovering this overlooked region. For fans of Rhône and Rioja varietals, the Rogue Valley is an absolute treasure trove of Syrah, Grenache, and Tempranillo.

Full-time physician Dr. Peter Adesman and his wife, Dr. Robin Miller, planted the Peter William estate vineyard in 2013 after decades of work collecting, consuming, and educating on wine. They grow Roussanne, Grenache, Syrah, Tempranillo, and Malbec at the estate and purchase from other Rogue Valley vineyards. The resulting wines are enjoyable and approachable, both in terms of drinkability and cost.

Peter William PWV ‘Extravagance’ Reserve Red, Rogue Valley, USA 2018 750ml $39 special, 12 bottles available
Norm Roby Wine Review Online 94 Points “It may be going on elsewhere, but Southern Oregon sure seems to be a hotbed of creative winemaking energy leading to fascinating blends and unusual wines.  One that caught my attention is rarely seen outside of Australia and Spain: a 50-50 blend of Tempranillo and Syrah.  The latter was grown in the estate vineyard and the Tempranillo sourced from Coventina Vineyard on the western edge of the Valley.  Aged for 21 months in French oak, the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.  The 2018 growing season was long, and late season warmth yielded wines that are ripe and rich.  This intriguing blend turns out to be delicious red wine with both depth and charm.  It comes across as ripe, plush Syrah built on a Tempranillo framework, meaning it has Syrah’s black fruit and hint of leather and pepper but is held in check with good structure and balance.  Slight oak toast adds to the finish.”

Peter William Grenache, Rogue Valley, USA 2020 750ml $26 special, 19 bottles available
Michael Alberty-Wine Enthusiast 90 Points “After 10 months in neutral French oak, this Grenache is eager to make friends. Its dark chocolate and meaty aromas will make you crave pork mole. The flavors are a tangy combination of boysenberry and orange zest, with bits of tobacco and ginger. Boisterous acidity intersects with firm tannins.”

Peter William ‘Lot W’ Syrah, Rogue Valley, USA 2018 750ml $19 special, 36+ bottles available
Norm Roby-Wine Review Online 94 Points “This small batch Syrah is made from estate grown grapes which are vinified by winemaker Eric Weisinger, who is the “W” referenced on the label. The end result is a compact, powerful expression of Syrah that may be one of the best values around these days. It is pure, ripe Syrah beginning with its dark color and earthy, leathery, black pepper aromatics. It evolves in the glass and is full of black fruits and spices delivered in a compact, medium full bodied style. It was aged in American oak (30% new) and the light toasty flavor adds a little intrigue to the ripe berry and slightly floral notes in the aftertaste. Although it should be wonderfully complex in 3 to 4 years, it is nevertheless outstanding now.”

Peter William ‘Lot W’ Tempranillo, Rogue Valley, USA 2018 750ml $24 special, 24 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast “A distinctly earthy nose features interesting notes of crushed black-walnut shells, smoked cherries and a touch of mint. The flavors of ripe black cherries, leather and almond extract are encircled by a wall of grippy tannins. Decanting is recommended.”

Peter William Malbec, Rogue Valley, USA 750ml $29 special, 18 bottles available
Norm Roby-Wine Review Online 92 Points “Unable to decide which vintage should be released first, the winery decided to offer both its 2018 and 2019 Malbec at the same time and price.  Both are from the same vineyard block made by the same winemaker.  Both were aged 18 months in 30% new oak barrels.  The major difference is the oak; in 2018 it was American, whereas the oak in 2019 is French.  The differences were subtle, but with time in the glass the 2019 displayed more finesse and complexity.  It comes across as a pretty, elegant Malbec with spiced dark plum fruit and baking spice flavors, refined, smooth tannin and light oak.  Overall, the 2019 has more polish and a potential to develop with short term cellaring.”

Peter William Daisy Creek Vineyard Viognier, Rogue Valley, USA 2022 750ml $24 special, 17 bottles available
Michael Alberty-Wine Enthusiast 93 Points “The Daisy Creek Viognier is consistently one of the best white wine values in Oregon. This year’s model starts off with pear, butterscotch and talc aromas. Blazing acidity shines through as flavors like grilled pineapple, Thai basil and blood orange sorbet sashay across the palate.”

Wine Advocate 96 Points ” …the 2012 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Louis Salmon evokes aromas of lemon oil, pastry, baked bread, walnuts and chalk. Medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, it’s vinous, almost creamy, with a layered, delicate structure that leads to a delicately citrusy, long and delicate finish. This Champagne is built to age, thanks to the power of the 2012 vintage and the house’s signature tension. Disgorged in the second quarter of 2023 with 3.9 grams per liter dosage, it was matured 75% in stainless steel and 25% in barrels.”

Fun Fact: In order for a grower Champagne to be labelled “Special Club,” it must pass a strict series of blind tastings and receive unanimous approval from everyone already in the Club, an official body known as the “Club de Trésors.” Of the founding 12 member of the Trésors,Gaston Chiquet is one of only 3 that still remains in production today.
Gaston Chiquet Special Club Grand Cru Brut Millesime, Champagne, France 2015 750ml $89 special, 11 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points “The 2015 Champagne Special Club Brut is a seductive offering from the Chiquet house. Pouring a silver-straw hue and composed of 68% Chardonnay and the rest Pinot Noir, this year’s release is lush and expressive on opening, with a decadent perfume of red apple, sweet brioche, honeyed Meyer lemon, and wet stone. Approachable on the palate, it opens with a rounded and pillowy mousse, a supple texture, and modest acidity, although at this stage, it remains fresh and inviting, with a touch of green almond notes on the finish. Although I don’t see 2015 as the longest-lived of vintages, this wine will have an open drinking window that may prove to surprise me over the coming decade or more. Disgorged January 2015.”

RH Coutier Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut, Champagne, France NV 750ml $49 special, 18 bottles available
Beaune Imports-Importer’s Note “This fine Champagne produced from 100% Chardonnay grapes from the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay is definitely a rarity as this village is known almost exclusively for its Pinot Noir based wines. The golden color with feint hints of green belie the high-toned nature of this fine wine. The nose shows classic apples and white stone fruit blossoms tinged with citrus. A creamy texture with fresh mineral tones and floral notes round out the racy acidity that follow. Very classy stuff…”

A. Margaine ‘Le Brut’ Premier Cru Brut, Champagne, France NV 750ml $54.50 special, 24 bottles available
Wine Spectator “Fresh and floral, with the fine, lacy mousse supporting well-meshed notes of blanched almond and ripe Gala apple and nectarine fruit, plus hints of fleur de sel and oyster shell. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Disgorged January 2023. Drink now.”

HOT DEAL  Dry Creek Vineyard Dry Chenin Blanc, Clarksburg, USA 2022 750ml $16 special, 36+ bottles available
Winery Note “We are proud to have produced Dry Chenin Blanc each and every year since our family winery was founded in 1972. Extremely versatile and food friendly, it is the perfect aperitif and one of our most beloved wines. Fermented in 100% stainless steel barrels, this beautiful wine is wonderfully bright and consistent vintage after vintage. At first swirl, aromatics of honeydew, watermelon and pineapple spring forward from the glass with floral notes of jasmine and honeysuckle. On the palate, the wine has refreshing flavors of cucumber, lime and nectarine with hints of geranium, sweet basil and ripe orange. The mouthfeel is soft but inviting, with a lively acidity. This classic, Loire Valley-style wine is excellent when paired with fresh oysters, seafood, or just about anything!”

La Rioja Alta S.A. Vina Ardanza Reserva, Rioja DOCa, Spain 2016 750ml $44.50 special, 12 bottles available
James Suckling 95 Points “Savory and complex with dried orange peel, cedar and plenty of sweet spices, walnuts, caramel, dried mushrooms and pine needles. Shows maturity here, with a medium body and superb freshness. Incredibly long finish with lots of truffle and walnut. Lasts over a minute. Very complete now, but you can still hold it.”
Tim Atkin 94 Points “Ardanza is a traditional pan-regional Rioja that marries Tempranillo from Cenicero and Rodezno with 20% Garnacha from Tudelilla. Aged in lightly toasted American barrels, it’s sweet, spicy and complex, with leather, wild strawberry and red pepper notes, fine, scented oak and the freshness of the vintage.”

Raphael et Vincent Bereche

“It’s been nearly two decades since growers began to dominate the headlines in Champagne. Yet, over that period, surprisingly few growers have managed to separate themselves from the pack—by virtue of their genius or their gift for making Champagne of unique expressiveness. Two that have are the brothers, Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche.” –Rare Wine Company, Importer

This very special wine, Bereche’s “Côte” Millesime represents a combination of brothers Raphael & Vincent’s incredibly precise and technical winemaking prowess in service to the best regions in Champagne, like Oger, that they would never have access to in their Estate bottlings. This wine is a phenomenal tightrope act: a Champagne that is both opulent and refreshing. Plush and rounded, with a bolt of acidity ripping right through it.

Only 5,300 bottles of this wine were produced and we are selling this super rare bottle at the lowest price in the United States!

Gismondi on Wine 94 Points (2005 vintage) ” …This chardonnay is from mid-slope Grand Cru Avize, and the 2005 vintage. It went into bottle in 2006 and remained there until its disgorging in December 2016 (!!), dosed with 4 g/l. Exceptional finesse and complexity, with layers of wet and dry chalk, lemon peel, green apple, fresh filberts, crispy meringue on a finely textured palate. A wave of savoury salts kissed with brown butter rides throughout, providing an alluring interest. There’s a natural restraint, yet palpable intensity in this graceful, characterful wine, one that stood out amongst the rest.”

Contrade di Taurasi / Cantine Lonardo

“… you only have to taste the wines of Contrade di Taurasi/Lonardo, Guastaferro, and Mastroberardino, for example, to realize that world-class wines could be made with the Aglianico grape” – Ian D’Agata, Vinous

Sandro Lonardo makes some of the best values in powerful, Italian red wine. Based in Taurasi, he works primarily with the local Aglianico grape to produce wines that combine power and intensity with site-specific nuance that rival the best wines in Barolo and Brunello, yet without the high price.

To Italian insiders, this isn’t news. After all, Campania, the area around Naples, has been famous for its wines since the Greeks settled it. There are numerous references to the quality of the wines in Roman writings. If more of the wines were at the level of Cantine Lonardo, the region would be as famous as Barolo, Barbaresco, or Brunello.

Sandro Lonardo is a schoolteacher who also makes wines, both from vineyards he farms and from grapes he buys from local farmers. His commits to traditional practices in the vineyard and winery. Lonardo’s Taurasi wines are made from ancient Aglianico vines planted at 1300 feet above sea level, grown organically in a tall pergola in ancient volcanic ash with a base of limestone and clay. The very best lots are kept separate and released as single vineyard bottlings.

In the winery, he limits the use of barrique and new wood, yet the wines aren’t rustic monsters. There is a unique freshness and approachability, especially given the reputation of the grape and the warm climate it calls home.

We’re offering rare library stock for his two single vineyards, Coste and Vigne d’Alto, and special reserve bottlings. The 2011s—a warm year that produced exceptionally powerful reds—have just entered their drinking windows, but will comfortably age for another decade. The 2012s on offer are full of energy. Snag at least two bottles, one for short term consumption and the other for longer aging. These prices will look laughably low in a few years.

Ian D’Agata-Vinous 94+ points
“Deep ruby with a purple tinge. Reticent nose at first, only hinting at dark cherry, sassafras and sandalwood. Then very concentrated and dense, displaying almost opulent, sweet nuances of oaky torrefaction to the coffee, cocoa and dark cherry flavors. This outstanding Taurasi finishes extremely long, rich and seamless. It’s virtually impossible to pick between Lonardo’s two crus in 2011, and both will have many admirers.”

Kerin O’Keefe-Wine Enthusiast 95 points
“Perfumed and loaded with finesse, this single-vineyard wine opens with enticing scents of violet, ripe black-skinned fruit, new leather and baking spice. Made with 60- to 100-year-old plants, the smooth, delicious palate delivers succulent Marasca cherry, plum, licorice and nutmeg framed in velvety tannins, making it one of the more elegant expressions of Taurasi out there. A mineral note energizes the lingering finish. Drink through 2032.”

Eric Guido-Vinous 96 points
“The 2011 Taurasi Riserva pulls you close and holds your attention firm with its deeply alluring bouquet of crushed black cherries, plum sauce, autumnal spices, woodland herbs and hints of animal musk. This fills the palate with rich, pliant textures and ripe red and blue berries, as nervous acidity maintains wonderful freshness, and sweet notes of cinnamon, clove and tobacco form toward the close. There’s plenty of tannic grip here, yet it’s balanced by the 2011’s mix of opulent, concentrated fruit and contrasting sour citrus tones that resonate for what feels like a full minute. Even as you contemplate the experience, minerals, hints of iodine and rosy inner florals can still be sensed upon the palate. Make no mistake, this is a full-throttle expression of Taurasi, but it will win the hearts of collectors who enjoy a bigger and old-school style.”

De Venoge

De Venoge was established in Champagne in the first part of the 19th century by Swiss born Henri-Marc de Venoge and his son Joseph.  Today the House has a strong following in Europe for good reason—they source from some of the best vineyards in Champagne and produce prestige cuvées of immense quality, built on long lees aging. The Louis XV, for instance, is sourced exclusively from Grand Cru villages such as Verzenay, Bouzy, Avize, and Le Mesnil. The resulting wines capture the essence of classical Champagne and are in high demand in Europe’s top restaurants.

Relatively unknown in the United States, their finest and rarest wines continue to be undervalued relative to their peers. This is no better exemplified than their prestige cuvee, the LXV bottling. Named after Louis the 15th, who first authorized the bottling of Champagne, it sees extensive aging on its lees and is a true monument of vintage Champagne. It offers a rich, creamy texture from the extended lees aging married to surprisingly fresh, mineral personalities.

There’s a reason this House has such a following overseas: they produce stunning aged wines that are ready to go, so consumers can enjoy the magic on release. Now’s your chance to try them for yourself! These are perfect “occasion” wines that make for memorable birth year and anniversary gifts.

De Venoge Louis XV Brut Millésimé, Champagne 2006 750ml Was $189, Displayed Price: $169, that’s $160.55 at 5% off and $152.10 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The assemblage of the 2006 Louis XV Brut Millésimé is about the same as the 1995 and 1996—composed of 50/50 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, all from grand cru villages. The only difference is that the Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger (10% of the assemblage) spent 12 months in oak barrels. Disgorged in January 2017 (dosage: six grams per liter), the 2006 has a golden color and opens with a deep, ripe, elegant and vinous bouquet with toasty and chalky lemon and fresh white fruit flavors. On the palate, this is an intense, round, fresh and complex Louis XV with great purity and finesse. The wine opens on the palate like a soufflé, coating the whole palate without any pressure or weight—gorgeous! This is a delicate and fresh yet well-structured and persistent Louis XV whose intense and long but weightless finish reveals lovely, almost juicy fruit concentration with perfectly integrated freshness and lasting minerality that seems to give additional structure. The 2006 shows a lot of Chardonnay features right now and drinks perfectly today; however, it can be kept under perfect conditions for decades.”
