For over thirty years, the Dal Forno family has been crafting deeply concentrated expressions of Valpolicella and Amarone. Their name practically defines the style of wines from this northeastern portion of the Veneto.
 
Established in 1983 by Romano Dal Forno, the estate vaulted to the heights of perfection in the Venato. The family employs traditional winemaking techniques, such as extended drying of the grapes before pressing, to craft their serious and seriously concentrated wines.
 
Vines hail from the foothills at around 1,000 feet above sea level. Here, the family’s 65 acres are planted to indigenous varieties such as Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella, grown and pruned according to ancient traditions.

James Suckling 100 points “This is black as pitch in the glass and, yes, there’s a light, tarry edge to the super-concentrated prune, date and currant fruit. But even more interesting are the complex notes of bitter-orange liqueur, aged balsamic, fresh roasting herbs, cinnamon, roasted chestnuts, black tea and licorice. The more you decant in advance, the more nuances will emerge. It’s full-boded with huge concentration and lots of chewy tannin that is managing to hold the fruit back for now. This needs plenty of time to develop in the bottle. Just superb. One of the greatest Dal Forno’s ever.”

James Suckling 98 points “The current release. A tour de force, despite the sheer morass of palate-staining fruit. The malty oak is evident, yet operates as a welcome adjunct to corral and compress the swashbuckle of coffee grinds, beef bouillon, mint, leather varnish and saturated dark cherry liqueur, into a sheath of tension as much as sheer power. Grapes are dried for 70-80 days. This may seem obvious initially, but as one works it out in the glass and across the inner gums, the multitudinous layers become evident. A wine that shape-shifts and beguiles, as much it wrestles with the senses. Excellent. Drink or hold.”

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points “A dark, super-ripe wine, the 2008 Valpolicella Superiore is fabulous in this vintage. Smoke, tar, incense, licorice and blackberry jam hit the palate in a massive, intense Valpolicella loaded with class and personality. Even with all of the concentration, the 2008 is quite a bit less tannic than some recent vintages have been, which makes it accessible even today, especially if given a little air. There is a lot to admire in this drop-dead gorgeous Valpolicella from Romano Dal Forno.”

This wine shows so beautifully, especially in a warm but balanced vintage like 2009. The fruit is expressive and articulate with deep layers of blackberry preserves, dried cherry, dark chocolate, espresso bean, mesquite smoke and soy sauce. The mouthfeel is super rich and concentrated as the Dal Forno signature style would dictate. The tannic bite is still strong and this wine needs a few more years to stretch out its muscular build. I’d suggest drinking it after 2018.”

An array of medicinal cherries plum sauce ginger cookies cloves cinnamon and dried roses captivate. There’s tremendous depth here but it maintains fantastic freshness. This is wildly spicy and intense yet deep with brilliant acidity adding energy seldom found in Valpolicella which enlivens the crunchy red fruits and pretty inner florals within. The 2017 finishes dramatically long and perfumed resonating on sour blackberries currants and a bitter hint of cocoa. This goes far beyond the expectation of Valpolicella with the power and aromatics of an Amarone but with a liveliness that will allow it to excel at the dinner table.”

Bérêche’s “Côte”
 
Raphael et Vincent Bérêche’s “Côte” bottling is an ode to this Champagne’s home village of Oger. Oger is a tiny, Grand Cru village in the Côte des Blancs region of Champagne. It is often mistaken for Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, given the similarity in name. In Peter Liem’s book, “Champagne” Rodolphe Péters of Pierre Péters describes it as producing wines with “delicate with aromas of red fruit and tangerine.” Liem goes on to describe the village as producing riper and more fragrant wines than Mesnil due to the east-facing bowl that captures sunlight. Wine from the village is also used as the basis for Charles Heidsieck’s Grand Cru Côte des Blancs blends, and results in a stunning Champagne in the hands of the Bérêche brothers.

Of all the major old world giants, Spain has perhaps the fewest number of wines with a rarified cult status. While prices continue to rise for top Rioja, Priorat, Ribeira Sacra, and Ribera del Duero, those wines are still widely available and produced in quantities that limit the fear of missing a new release. Dominio de Pingus is one of few expections to this rule.

Along with Vega Sicilia, Pingus is a Ribera del Duero producer that shakes global palates when reaches shelves, wine lists, and investment markets. The irony is that this winery is one of the newer faces on the Spanish wine scene, only being founded in 1995 by Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck. One of the first vintages of the old vines that became the top Pingus bottling was famously called “One of the greatest young red wines” Robert Parker had ever tasted, and bestowed a score of 96-100 points. This caused immediate stir in the fine wine community and Sisseck has only further expanded the immense quality of the estate.

Biodynamic winemaking practices have culminated in a deep connection between vineyard and wine for all bottlings from Pingus. Vigor is controlled through strict pruning and the resulting grapes are intensely concentrated with the character of each new vintage. Peter has slowly decreased the usage of new oak in the wines, allowing the intense fruit flavors of the old vines to shine in as elegant a manner as possible.

Over the years Sisseck has expanded production to include 2 additional wines in his annual releases: Flor de Pingus and PSI. Flor is produced from a combination of old and young vines (though increasingly only old vines) and can be viewed as a more linear and adolescent version of the top Pingus wine. The complexity of flavor makes this one of Spain’s top quality to price wines considering the pedigree of fruit and handling to bring this from vineyard to bottle. The PSI bottling is a more entry-level offering that is meant to be enjoyed earlier than the two other labels. The project is one of passion for Sisseck as he has pursued dynamic and under-appreciated vineyard plots from local growers to form a wine that reflects the “soul of Ribera del Duero”. Given the price point this wine is certainly a labor of love and a steal for the depth of flavor it privides.

Wine Advocate 93-95 points “The 2022 PSI is clean, expressive and open, much more approachable than the more reductive 2021 that I tasted next to it. It’s primary, fruit-driven and precise. “The fruit selection was better in 2022,” explained Sisseck. It has contained ripeness and a polished texture and is sleek and elegant, with fine tannins. It feels like a step up from 2021. This was also the final blend waiting to be bottled-clarified, sulfur added and everything, so pretty much the wine that is going to be bottled.”

Wine Advocate 94+ points “There is around 20% new oak in the 2020 Flor de Pingus, and because it has a little younger vines (there was a land-consolidation project in La Horra in 2006!), there’ll be some Garnacha starting in 2021 and maybe some oak vats for aging too. All this shows the direction, where he found structure and volume in the palate, with textured tannins. It’s harmonious and elegant, aromatic and floral, perfumed and showy, with contained ripeness and around 14% alcohol. The palate is quite powerful, with abundant but fine tannins. 110,000 bottles were filled in July 2022.”

Wine Advocate 99 points “The bottled 2020 Pingus has settled, and the strong Mediterranean accent that was quite strong early on seems to have calmed down. The wine shows more of the serious Pingus character and is harmonious, balanced and elegant, perhaps because of the time it spent in oak vat (starting this year, it is not only in barrique). It feels very complete and intense but without weight or heaviness, and the fruit shows very clean and focused. Peter Sisseck compared it with the 2000, a wine that for him transcends the vintage; it showcases the balance (wines like 1996, 2000, 2012, 2016 and 2018). The quality of the tannins is stunning, which make the wine very elegant and balanced, and it has good freshness (even some red fruit!)…”

“Proprietor Erin Nuccio and his wife purchased Evesham Wood from founders Russ and Mary Raney in 1986. The estate is centred on the vineyard called Le Puits Sec, which is just under 5ha. The site is located on the eastern ridge of Eola-Amity Hills, and Nuccio produces wine from the estate vineyard and from purchased fruit from top sources in the Willamette Valley. The Pinot Noir is normally punched down twice daily, and there is usually an inclusion of whole clusters that varies according to the vintage and the vineyard. William Kelley- Wine Advocate 96 Points “Disgorged after 60 months on the lees, and incorporating 20% reserve wines, the NV Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Enfers (2017) 60 months is based on the 2017 vintage. After the volume and breadth of the 2014 and 2015 iterations, and after the structure of 2016, the 2017 remains impressively vinous and intensely flavored, but it’s more charming and immediate in style. Offering up aromas of mango, pear, spices, beeswax, dried white flowers and fresh bread, it’s full-bodied, layered and giving, with a deep core of fruit and a resonant, saline finish. Often, it’s Les Roises that’s the more exotic of Collin’s two Congy cuvées, thanks to its virused vines and more southerly exposition, but in 2017, that dynamic seems to have been reversed.”

Peach, apricot, crushed rocks, chamomile, hazelnut and a touch of reduction race across the palate. This is an especially dense, heady vintage for the Pierrières. This only needs a few more months to recover from its relatively recent disgorgement. Time in the glass brings out notable crystalline purity. This is so impressive. Dosage is 1-2 grams per liter. The 2021 marries power and finesse in the way only Rancia can. Black cherry, leather, game, spice, licorice, tobacco and grilled herbs are all nely knit in a brooding yet elegant Gran Selezione that delivers the goods. Superb.”

So says one of Spain’s biggest Terroir Champions. The man who rewrote the rules of Rioja… Telmo. Earlier this week we explored his Galician winery, Ladeira Do Xil, but he is a very busy man, with numerous wine projects across Spain, but Remelluri was the beginning of it all.
 
Telmo and his sister Amaia have continued their father’s tradition in Remelluri over from their father, bringing unrivaled finesse and terroir, offering some of the most profound expressions in all of Rioja:
 
Importer’s note “The concept of Remelluri Blanco remains the obliteration of grape variety by using a number of co-planted vines and utilizing a gentle, low-impact élevage. Thus, Telmo ensures that Remelluri Blanco speaks only of the terruño of the place, rather than of any particular grape or process. With Remelluri Blanco, he has achieved something truly unique and singular, with each vintage coveted by the same collectors who search out Chave’s Hermitage Blanc and Montrachet by Domaine Leflaive.”

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 97 Points “The 2021 Blanco is a blend of varieties and places and is the first wine that expresses the special character of the Remelluri property … it comes from vines planted between 1989 and 2012 and is worked organically and biodynamically, with cover crops and horses. It has ripeness, notes of pollen and yellow fruit and a touch of smoke and spice, with a very balanced palate and great purity. It follows the path of elegance and freshness of the 2020, but it was a cooler and healthier vintage (in 2020, they had hail twice), and the wine shows more precision and finishes very clean.”
 
Importer’s note: Telmo selects specific parcels of the oldest vines at some of the highest altitudes on the property for Granja Remelluri Gran Reserva. The blend includes a larger proportion of centennial garnacha from a vineyard planted more than a hundred years ago at 750 meters in the foothills of the mountain. Granja Remelluri has a marked Atlantic character and goes through extended aging in large format foudre barrels, with further time in bottle until they feel the Granja is ready to be released.

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 95 Points “A blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano, the 2012 Granja Remelluri Gran Reserva represents what they are aiming for with this wine, a classical expression of the place, the quintessence of the vineyards. The select their oldest vineyards and age the wine for a long time, coming back to those early years of a modern Rioja that has now turned into a classic. It has some dusty tannins, with good grip and length. It was bottled in 24,238 bottles after an élevage of 26 months. It has been in bottle since May 2015.”
 
The Lindes de Remelluri wines feature distinct terroirs of the broader region: Labastida, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Ábalos, Peciña, Rivas de Tereso, and Salinillas de Buradón. Remelluri has therefore become a unique window into the complexion and taste of Rioja, offering consumers unparalleled access to understand the region intimately in the glass.

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93+ points “The serious and austere new 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Ábalos was produced with grapes on marl and limestone from the Marqués de Legarda, who is mentioned on the label. It’s a blend of 73% Tempranillo, 17% Graciano, 6% Garnacha and 4% other varieties, presented in a straight Bordeaux bottle. It reflects more the character of Haro than the Rioja Alavesa, wines with more Graciano. It’s medium to full-bodied with 14.17% alcohol and has fine-grained, chalky tannins. 13,205 bottles were filled in May 2022.”

Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points “The perfumed and floral 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Peciña is the smallest cuvée from a narrow amphitheater in the parish of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. It’s a blend of Tempranillo with 25% Garnacha and therefore presented in a Burgundian bottle, reflecting the high percentage of Garnacha. It has notes of Mediterranean herbs, some coolness from the high altitude of the vineyards and some austerity in the tannins. 7,149 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022.”

Remelluri Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Rivas de Tereso 2020 750ml $36 special, 16 bottles available
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93+ points “Rivas de Tereso are parishes of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, but the difference with the 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Rivas de Tereso is that the vineyards are at higher altitude and the percentage of Garnacha is much higher here (38%), so there’s more mountain character and more herbal notes in the wine. It has 57% Tempranillo and some 5% other varieties. Despite a moderate 13.95% alcohol, the nose shows good ripeness, and there is some wilderness here, perhaps a little more rusticity too. The soils are very stony and rich in limestone, and the altitude gives the wine an austere twist.”
 
Remelluri Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Salinillas de Buradón 2020 750ml $39 special, 21 bottles available
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Salinillas de Buradón, a parish of Labastida, was produced with a blend of 91% Tempranillo, 4% Garnacha and 5% other varieties from south-facing vineyards behind the Sierra de la Cantabria, the last vineyards that they recovered on quartz salt, gypsum and red clay soils. These are the last grapes to be picked, and the wine has 14.22% alcohol but doesn’t show any heat. It comes through as serious, shy and austere, a little closed at first. The tannins are a little rustic, but the wine has a strong mineral streak that made it my favorite from the lot. 20,114 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022.”

Telmo Rodriguez’s winery, Pegaso, began as all wineries in Sierra de Gredos seem to: with a long hike. Decades ago, he and his father were crossing the iconic mountain range and young Telmo was so enamored by the peaceful and simple beauty of the land that he vowed to make wine there some day. In 1999, he did just that, purchasing vineyard land in Cebreros, an old village outside of Avila. Finally a chance to make something all his own.
 
Pegaso releases wines based on the two soil types in his vineyards: Pizarra (brown slate) and Granito (granite). Zeta, his newest wine, is a blend from both slate and granite soils and an excellent introduction to Telmo’s style. Featuring 60 year old vines then spontaneously fermented and aged in a combo of neutral oak, stainless steel, and amphorae, then fined with egg whites, this is a complex and vivacious wine with a unique sense of place.

Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 96 Points “The 2018 Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra was produced with Garnacha from 80+-year-old vines on slopes rich in schist. It fermented in oak and stainless steel vats and amphorae with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500- and 600-liter French oak barrels for 24 months. Against all odds, because the wines from schist tend to be more closed than the ones from granite, the wine is super expressive and open, aromatic, floral and perfumed. It’s powerful and elegant, with structure and freshness, with balance and all the ingredients for a great development in bottle. This has to be the finest vintage of this wine since the initial 1999.”

René Rostaing founded his estate in the 1970s, working with family parcels in the Côte Blonde and La Landonne regions of the Northern Rhone appellation of the Côte Rôtie. The estate has since expanded, now including the Côte Bonnette parcel in Condrieu, old vines in Lézardes (just outside Côte Rôtie and bottled under the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes), as well as an estate in the Coteaux du Languedoc, where the estate’s Puech Noble wines originate.
 
For fans of the Northern Rhone, these are iconic, classic wines like no other. Eschewing 100% new oak and other modern stylings, the estate is not afraid of using modern technology as long as it aids in performing traditional practices, such as using rotary fermenters for the traditional long and gentle macerations.
 
Since 2015, René’s son Pierre has managed the estate, guided by tradition and aided by his retired father. The wines undergo seven- to twenty-day-long macerations with the stems, which Pierre believes adds to “Côte Rôtie’s ineffable perfume.” The results are some of the most sought-after wines in the entire Rhone.

Heymann-Loewenstein is the signature producer of Germany’s Lower Mosel region, where the steepness of the slope requires terraces just to be able to grow grapes. It’s a daunting place to work—everything is so steep that no mechanized work is possible and so every single vine must be tended by hand.
 
Reinhard Loewenstein is a perfectionist who will do anything and everything to make his wines as profound as possible. His yields and selection in the vineyards are made solely with quality in mind, and he holds his wines back longer before release than most German producers—cash flow be damned!
 
In terms of style, the word that comes to mind when tasting these wines is ‘mineral’. Not minerality paired with fruitiness, like with many Mosel Rieslings, but sheer rockiness in liquid form. The wines are lean, racy and benefit from air or a few years in bottle. If allowed to open up they are incredibly rewarding in the way that only the great wines of the world can be.
