Rare Wine Co. “Berri, is the westernmost MGA in the entire Barolo appellation, and the soils are younger than those in La Morra’s better-known eastern crus. Here, the limestone bedrock is punctuated by outcroppings of sandstone, and the resulting soils have lots of pebbles mixed into the heavy clay. The trio replanted their 5ha parcel in 2007 and began vinifying its grapes with the 2010 vintage.”

Importer’s Note “In the Tuscan dialect Citto means “young boy.” As from the land in comes from Citto is the young boy of Volpaia. As in the French tradition of the great Bordeaux Chateaux Chateau Mouton Rotschild has Mouton Cadet and Chateau Cheval Blanc has Petit Cheval, the same way Castello di Volpaia has his Citto. Citto is made from a selection of the best grapes from vineyards in the Chianti Classico and Maremma areas. Vivid ruby color. Generous and silky wine with fruity aroma and intense berry taste.”

Importer’s Note “The wine starts out aromatically expressing the magic that limestone seems to impart to its wines. Pure and striking fruits, like sweet lime, meyer lemon with lemon curd, exotic spice and flint dart out of the glass and into the nose. If you can manage to keep it in the glass for a couple of hours of slow observation and drinking, the wine will take you on a rollercoaster of highs that seem only to climber higher with every passing minute. Acidity? More than you can imagine but somehow it presents itself gently on the finish after a somewhat overwhelming initial attack from the first sip.”
 
Arnaud Lambert Breze Clos Tue-Loup Saumur Rouge 2021 750ml $34 special, 12 bottles available
With proper aeration this wine will overflow with high-toned, fresh red and black fruits, followed with rich, red flowers and softer notes of black earth, gravel, meat and iodine. It’s raised in old oak barrels to keep the savory earth and pure fruit notes fully intact. During fermentation, it was extracted a mere three times, a strong move to further encourage the purity and precision of the wine. In typical Brézé fashion, the acidity reigns over the tannic structure. Indeed, the tannins are present but they are smoothly polished and serve as a supporting role for the wine’s striking and refined acidity. Clos du Tue-Loup lands squarely in the ethereal department of Cabernet Franc, and while there are many examples of this grape that try to make up for their lack of noble terroir, Arnaud works to let Brézé do most of the speaking for the wine.

The classic old tawny flavors of molasses and caramel wash over the palate. This isn’t big and thick, but some may very well prefer its elegant and brighter feel. In many ways, it is fresher than the 1981 or 1999 reviewed this issue, and it is better balanced than the 1937. It is very pretty.”

Norm Roby-Wine Review Online 92 points “Unable to decide which vintage should be released first, the winery decided to offer both its 2018 and 2019 Malbec at the same time and price. Both are from the same vineyard block made by the same winemaker. Both were aged 18 months in 30% new oak barrels. The major difference is the oak; in 2018 it was American, whereas the oak in 2019 is French. The differences were subtle, but with time in the glass the 2019 displayed more finesse and complexity. It comes across as a pretty, elegant Malbec with spiced dark plum fruit and baking spice flavors, refined, smooth tannin and light oak. Overall, the 2019 has more polish and a potential to develop with short term cellaring.”

But in 2020, production doubled to all of 50 cases. This 100% Tempranillo was aged for 23 months in a combination of French and American oak (27% new). It makes a strong case for unblended Tempranillo. A bouquet of raspberry, cloves and forest floor quickly emerges in the glass. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine shows good concentration and notes of berry, baking spices, and a hint of black olive in the layered flavors. The flavors expand and continue in the finish to reveal some light, well-integrated tannins. It culminates with just a little tannic edge and grip. It has a long life ahead of it.”

To distinguish it from the others, the winery went with the “Candives” name, said to be an alternate name for Syrah used in the tiny village of Chavanay in the Northern Rhone Valley. As fine as the other 2018s are, this is so dark, dense, and dramatic that the special name is certainly merited. Loaded with ripe black fruit, it also has layers of spice, hints of clove and violets, light leather, toast, and pepper that evolve in the glass. Ultra smooth and seamless, it is beautiful now but will also bring rewards with cellaring.”

One of the highest-rated wineries of Germany is not a household name in the United States. It’s perhaps because those awards are European, American reviewers are only just beginning to catch on to the magnificence of Okonomierat Rebholz – one of the leading figures focused on crafting dry Grosses Gewächs wines.
 
The family’s winemaking roots date back to the 16th century. Since long before dry German wine became famous and popular, they’ve crafted dry wines. They’ve scientifically researched the terroir of their vineyard holdings to help select the best grape varieties to grow, how best and when to harvest, and what winemaking techniques will yield the highest quality wines. Louis Jadot’s Beaujolais Estate
 
Louis Jadot purchased their Moulin-à-Vent estate in 1996, becoming one of the first major Burgundy houses with significant holdings in the region. Their vineyards including holdings in some of the most famous Beaujolais crus of Moulin-à-Vent, Morgon, and Fleurie. These vineyards are notable for their pink granite soils, unique to the region, on which Gamay excels. Since taking over the estate, Maison Jadot has added organic and biodynamic practices, less with a mind towards certification than towards the health and character of each parcel.
 
The hand harvested grapes are rigorously sorted and destemmed before undergoing Burgundian winemaking techniques such as long macerations, natural fermentation, and barrel maturation. The resulting wines are silky and bright, with excellent aging potential. We’d say that these are surprisingly complex, but the secret is out about the quality of Beaujolais, especially from illustrious producers such as Jadot.

The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It’s fleshy, but right at the finish, it is a tad sweeter than I would like, lacking a bit of sapidity and tension. Near, yet not quite there! Winery Note “As ‘la Roche’ means, this vineyard is situated under the windmill (Moulin-A-Vent) on the mother rock old of 320 million years Only the Gamay grape is able to prosper on such soils almost without any water reserve throughout the year. Vinification: Picked and sorted by hand, then often de-stemmed, the grapes macerate slowly over the course of three to four weeks. Both pigeage and pumping over takes place during fermentation depending on the vintage. Winemaking and bottling: The wines are aged in our historic cellar for 10 months, a period spent in oak barrels, partly new and partly one, two and three vinages old. The oak used to make the barrels comes from the French forests of Allier, Limousin and Nivernais. Tasting / Food pairing: La Roche is a wine of great tension, with lots of minerality and precision. It is very linear in style, a characteristic that makes it a particularly apt match for complex and refined dishes.”

The Salvioni estate is dedicated to quality by keeping their yields low and their vineyard plantings small enough to allow for focused attention on every vine. Their ten acres of vines lie at over 1,200 feet above sea level. Up here, a near constant breeze reduces disease pressure on the vines and helps grapes retain acidity, ensuring freshness even in hot vintages like 2017. The resulting wines are almost Napa-esque in their combination of jammy ripeness and lifted acidity. In order to maximize the power of their old vines, yields are highly reduced. The wines undergo extended aging, longer than required in vat and bottle.

The Nahe is one of Germany’s most compelling regions despite its small size. Combining the heft of the Rheingau with the elegance and minerality inherent in the Mosel, the region offers something no other can boast: winemakers Helmut and Cornelius Dönnhoff. That’s a lot of faith we place on the shoulders of this family, but anyone who knows the wines knows that it is well deserved.
 
Dönnhoff is one of our favorite German producers, and one we stock by the pallet-load. And we’re not the only ones obsessed. So often, folks tell us that a bottle of the humble yet delicious Estate Trocken or the fiercely mineral and refined Oberhauser Brucke Spätlese was THE Riesling that sparked their passion for German terroir. Despite their extensive lineup, there’s rarely a wine made here that isn’t the finest of its type and terroir each vintage.

Grapelive 94 Points “The Dönnhoff ’23 vintage, especially the dry Riesling collection, like this gorgeous, crisply dry, spicy, delicately aromatic and crystalline Roxheimer Höllenpfad, is simply stunning and while the GGs will get all the major attention there some outstanding values here, as this one also proves. Honestly, it was incredibly difficult to choose a favorite in the samples of these 2023s from Cornelius Dönnhoff, but if I had to pick I would definitely say that the Hermannshöhle GG and the Felsenberg GG were my tippy top wines, while this Roxheimer Höllenpfad Trocken for the money would be one that would stock up on. The pristine and steely medium bodied palate shows of lime blossom, green apple, tart apricot, quince and tangerine, along with quinine, chamomile, almond, herb, flinty mineral spice, wet rock, lemon oil and saline. Zingy and youthfully energetic this Riesling also has the signature purity and elegance you’d expect of a Dönnhoff and it is complex enough to thrill the most jaded of Riesling lovers. There’s more to come with patience I believe and while I might be hard pressed not to enjoy this one right away, there should be extra rewards for those who wait, it should get another few years in bottle to fully express itself.”

Münsterer Kapellenberg – quartz, with some red slate – several sections which are very steep, but similar to Rheinberg where the lower sections have richer soils. Münsterer Dautenpflänzer – loess, subsoil is quartz – Daute means “shoot” and pflänzer means “plant”, an homage to the fact that this was once a nursery. South facing, the older section is steep, and the vineyard is an amphitheater shape.”

Fifty-two percent comes from own-rooted vines in the Weber Vineyard planted in 1983; 28% comes from Stater Vineyard, where vines were planted on rootstock in 1990; 11% comes from own-rooted vines planted in 1974 and 1984 in Durant Vineyard; and 9% comes from own-rooted vines planted from 1970 to 1988 in the Maresh Vineyard. It was fermented with around 15% whole clusters, and the wine was matured for 10 months in used French oak. It has ringing aromas of rhubarb, blackberry, raspberry, lavender and Angostura bitters, offering botanical undertones as it airs in the glass. The light-bodied palate is vibrant and expressive with wonderfully perfumed fruit, chalky tannins and a long, tremendously layered finish.”

It’s an open secret that dry German Riesling is one of the most complex white wines in the world, yet is also one of the most undervalued. There exist today some historic and well-respected producers that can turn heads and hearts without turning your wallet inside-out. One such estate is the innovative Dr. Bürklin-Wolf.
 
The estate of Dr. Bürklin-Wolf is a fixture in the Pfalz. Its quality and prestige have been lauded for centuries. Helmed since 1990 by Bettina Bürklin-von Guradze, she has only improved an already incredible winery. She oversaw the conversion to biodynamics and the shift to exclusively using estate-grown fruit.
 
Today the winery’s “Chef de Culture” Jan Hock manages 86 hectares including over a dozen different top vineyard sites in the region, all biodynamically. All bottlings regardless of premier cru (which the winery refers to as P.C.) or grand cru (G.C.) are crafted exclusively from handpicked, estate grapes. In the cellar, the wines receive detailed attention from Bürklin-von Guradze’s winemaker, Nicola Libelli. Libelli trained under the previous long-term winemaker, Fritz Knorr, who passed away suddenly in 2012. Skurnik describes Libelli as “young but extremely passionate and driven.” In keeping with Knorr’s legacy, Libelli employs natural fermentation and ages the wines in a combination of stainless steel and old oak casks. When selecting the casks for aging each wine, he is careful so as to ensure balance and to retain the character of the wines.
 
The results are wines of nuanced texture, thrilling acidity, and uncompromisingly unique character across different sites. These wines are peers of the Great biodynamic estates of France such as Lafite, Latour, and DRC in nearly every metric except price. Try to name one of their estate wines that runs for under $20. Pichler-Krutzler
 
Elisabeth Pichler-Krutzler, daughter of Franz Xaver (F.X.) Pichler, married the highly-regarded Austrian winemaker Erich Krutzler. In 2007, the pair founded the estate of Pichler-Krutlzer. Their winery is based around the great vineyards of the Wachau and produces some of Austria’s most highly regarded wines.
 
The pair prefer brighter, fresher wines than the style classically produced at F.X. (which itself is increasingly tending towards lower ripeness and higher acidity). These wines tend to have a little less power and a lot more versatility at the table. They’re breathtakingly complex, soulful wines that, like the remarkable wines of Selbach-Oster, are designed to be enjoyed with food.

Pichler-Krutzler Loibenberg Grüner Veltliner 2021 750ml Was $49, Now $39, 16 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2021 Loibner Grüner Veltliner Ried Loibenberg shows an intense yellow color and opens with a pure yet intense and slightly lactic (?) or yeasty bouquet of ripe and lush, yellow fruits intertwined with notes of crushed, crystalline stones and dark flinty notes. Round and mouth-filling on the palate, this an elegant, intense and textured, savory and finely tannic Loibenberg with a sustainable saline and crystalline finish. This is a fine and elegant, finely textured and fruit-intense Veltliner that fermented longer than the other wines (until the end of January), then aged in a 1,200-liter stück barrel and was bottled at the end of August this year with 13.5% stated alcohol. The wine doesn’t have the precision and finesse of the other Veltliners at this early stage, but it will find itself after years on the bottle. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2022.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94 points “Vinified in a new, untoasted 900-liter oak vat, the 2019 Ried Pfaffenberg Alte Reben Grüner Veltliner was only bottled in spring this year. The intensely citrus-colored wine shows a flinty, precise, fine and fresh bouquet with ripe stone fruit aromas and spices of crunchy crystalline stones. Creamy textured, ripe, lush and very elegant, with some attractive oak notes but fine tannins, this is a sensual, well-balanced and perfectly round Pfaffenberg that has to be marketed as Kremstal Reserve because the oak influence was too dominant for the DAC tasters in Krems. There is 14.5% alcohol, which you don’t feel due to the mineral freshness and elegance. Tasted at the domain in June 2021.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2021 Dürnsteiner Riesling Ried Kellerberg is extremely concentrated and deep on the finely flinty and substantial nose. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and savory, finely tannic and grippy Kellerberg with ripe and concentrated fruit but also a firm and saline finish. The acidity is enormous here (9.4 grams per liter), and the piquancy is well interwoven here with the extract. This is a wine to be cellared for at least 3-4 years. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2022.”
