Rowland Piollot is a 5th generation grower in Polisot, Cotes des Bar. A zealot in respect to organic practices, and literally married to Champagne- his wife is Dominique Moreau, she of Marie-Courtin acclaim. This wine is nicely balanced in all respects; the light touch on dosage (extra-brut) adds a verve to the richness inherent in a 50% Pinot Noir blend from the relatively warm Cotes des Bar, in the southern reaches of the Champagne Appellation.

PommardThe best of Burgundy is two distinct wine regions: the Cote de Beaune and the Cote de Nuit. These  are known collectively as the Cote d’Or. The Cote de Beaune is the southern-most of the two.  In the center of the Cote de Beaune, between the Volnay and Beaune, is the commune of Pommard, named for the Roman goddess of fruit trees, Pomona.  This commune is home to the Pommard AOC.  Here, only red Pinot Noir wines qualify for the AOC.Pommard AOC wines are generally noted for a masculine style, particularly in contrast to the lighter, more feminine style from the neighboring Volnay AOC.  The wines produced in Pommard are typically fuller in body, richer in tannins, have concentrated flavors, and are noted for their dark fruit and ironish minerality.

“Its hard to believe that Ghislaine Barthod and Louis Boillot are 50. Apart from the fact that they don’t look it, it only seems the other day – rather than 20 years ago or more – that I called in to taste their wines…Louis was born in 1957 (Pierre (brother) in 1960, and there are three sisters) and finished his viticultural studies in 1978 – about the time his father’s estate was reaching respectable dimensions and beginning to domaine bottle seriously. He met Ghislaine at the Roi Chambertin (an annual village party that lasts for a long weekend) in 1983. In 1987 they jointly bought the rather grand, if somewhat dilapidated house they live in now.

The Palacios Story
from Rioja to Priorat to Bierzo

Alvaro Palacios is not exactly a new face in the wine scene – Along with Peter Sisseck of Pingus, Alvaro is considered today to be one of the most important winemakers of Spain’s modern era. He has had a key role in revolutionizing the Spanish wine industry; by making rich, complex World Class wines from Priorat, and in bringing the forgotten regions and grape varieties of Priorat and Bierzo to new heights.

From a Rioja winemaking family operating as Bodegas Palacios Remondo, Alvaro Palacios was one of nine children set to inherit the struggling family estate that had been established in 1945. Though he had already begun working at the estate with two of his siblings, Alvaro got restless with tradition and chose to study in other regions.
