Domaine des Comtes Lafon

Dominique Lafon took over the family estate in 1984 from his father, Rene.  The estate was originally founded in the 19th century by Jule Lafon partly from his wife’s inheritance, but mostly through his own vineyard purchases in Cru vineyard sites such as Le Montrachet and Les Charmes.  His wife’s family built the house and cellar in which the estate still operates its winery.  Dominique’s father rescued the estate from being sold off and took over management in 1956.  By 1961, he had replanted much of the vineyards that had been mismanaged and began bottling much of the estate’s production.  When Dominique took over from his father, he terminated the remaining sharecropping agreements to take complete control over the management of the vineyards.

Domaine William Fevre
Chablis is the northernmost sub-region in Burgundy located about 60 miles northwest of the Cote de Nuits.  Chablis is famous for its Kimmeridgian limestone soil.  This soil type is composed of chalky marl, limestone and clay with fossilized oyster shells dating to the Late Jurassic Period, over 150 million years ago.  The soil influences the vines not only through the minerals available to the roots but also by enabling sunlight to reflect off the ground and back to the leaves.  Wines produced from Kimmeridgian soil tend to have a flinty or steely characteristic.

Germany
“When 2013 works it gives wines of great relief and contrast; these are vivid wines. They’re almost never creamy, but they are sometimes quite silky. They can seem deliciously savage at times, like a raspy-voiced singer; it isn’t a “pretty” voice but still you love it. 2013s are high in acidity and stunningly high in extract; this is tactile and discernible, not a metaphor. That said, bottling will often subdue this component, not insofar as it exists but insofar as it can be tasted.

Stephen Tanzer 90 (+?) points “Saturated ruby-red.  Pure aromas of black fruits, violet, graphite and herbs, plus a sexy note of sweet vanillin oak.  Large-scaled and thick, with mouthcoating tannins and palate-staining black fruit and herbal flavors.  The finish is long and pure and features great verve for such a big wine, but I would have liked a little more sweet fruit.”
